unhappy reply from HTC regarding video issue... - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

So, finally i did get a very short reply from HTC concerning the issues concerning video playback etc. the answer was short, No driver update will be released. So they know the problem but aren't going to solve it...
below my mail and reply:
Problem_Description: Dear sir, madam,
I have a htc TYTN II, bought it as office/multimedia PDA. Now i discovered that movies my old phone can play, can't play smooth on my TYTN II. how can this be since the TYTNII got a qualcomm with ati imageon chipset?
after some research i figured out that there are no drivers on the phone supporting hardware acceleration. So it's not possible to watch smooth video and play games.
Are there coming any software updates for this issue? because i think it's a little bit disapointing on a device of 700 euro.
Also the camera refreshes extremely slow (about 2 fps) in preview mode, wich make it impossible to take pictures in other situations then bright sunlight.
I hope to get a answer to my questions soon.
sincerely yours,
Ren?Molijn

so now i really hope, you guys can save us out here! and besides that I never ever going to buy a HTC phone anymore with this rediculous service on such a expensive device.
I also sent e-mails to Kassa, a dutch program wich help people with troubles like this, so hopefully we can go with a camera crew to the HTC center. Also making a website, wich hopefully will pop-up on top of google when you search for HTC and review. but more on that later.
greetz, and all of you a happy new year!

At this moment, mayb there is hope now

Can somebody pleace explain this?

ok, i've already signed the drivers perition for the kaiser on his forum but there is something that i do not understand. say htc does agre to give us the drivers, wont this be a hardware change or will it be a software on. if hardware thing then how wil they pull back all of the already sold kaisers? if it's a software change, cam' somebody here cook a rom that will get the drivers working? watching vids on the tilt isn't the greatest so can somebody please explain this to me. thanks

Drivers are a set of instructions for the hardware...
In short:
Software
Well to explain it a little bit, the problem on the actual firmware/drivers is, that they aren't optimized enough for the video performance stuff... so they want htc to work on the drivers for that stuff, to use the full capacity of the current internal hardware!
So the hardware it self is good and has the capacity for improvements, but the htc frimware/drivers are not able to use it.
So if HTC works on the driver they can get a lot more power/performance out of the current hardware
Imagine someone selling computer chips without telling anyone how to use them. Chips need to receive a specific set of instructions and provide a specific set of results.
We are not mad that HTC sold us a device that is missing a chip, we are mad that HTC sold us a chip that doesn't fully function. They have sold us an engine without the timing computer and are telling us we should push our cars everywhere.

I'm so over this whole "HTC owes me", and so on... At the end of the day, it plays back videos. Not as well as it could, agreed - But it plays them. This is not the PRIMARY function of the device - please stop comparing it to the cars engine. Keep it in perspective... I'd say this function is more comparable it to say a cars factory stereo system.
HTC didn't sell you a video player, they sold you a phone, that also has HEAPS of other functions, video playback being ONE of them. So many things about the phone are great, but that doesn't seem to matter apparantly.
The Kaiser is a huge improvement in many ways over the Hermes, so I think it's a fantastic product
Sorry, but time for everyone to just get over that "I'm a victim" attitude already... Every second thread there's non stop whining about it.

Well, they can't cook in software drivers that don't exist yet.
Maybe when a product that uses the same chip that also has the proper drivers comes out.
Now I agree with the poster that says it's not a big deal, it is a phone after all. But if we can get it implemented even better. I wouldn't go crazy over it, but there nothing wrong with keeping the manufacturers honest so they give us the best product possible.

Sorry mate, but even when compared with a car stereo the lack of proper drivers is a major issue.
Imagine buying a new BMW E92 as an upgrade from E46, with a Pioneer/Kenwood/Sony/Altec Lansing/Sehnheiser speaker system installed and wired to a... TAPEDECK, which also happens to be out of sync with the cassete and does not have enough power to drive the speakers, at all, and I'm talking about whisper-level volume. Sure, it gets you around and looks bling-y and has a bundled GPS and audio playback is not a primary feature of a car, but for some reason your old E46 and your neighbours Toyota Corolla does a better job at it (not to mention that it runs longer on one gas refill).
You paid a big wad of cash for a device advertised and priced as "ultimate", yet it lacks a feature you got used to having on your previous one and the manufacturer doesnt even have the decency to admit its mistake, dont you think you have every bit of a reason to be mad at them?
Yes Mikeer... HTC the big fascist company that it is has robbed you and many others! Everyone is so hard done by, and it's not fair what they've done!

I see your point and I don't feel HTC owes me anything. HTC should at least, deliver on what they advertise.
My 1st generation Kaiser aka Tmobile MDA played back video without any stutters. I would expect that a successor device developed two hardware cycles later work better than it's little brother.

And thats quite simply just one small disappointing factor in the device.
Myself, instead of petitioning and whatever other nonsense, put it down to an aspect of the device that wasn't as good this time around. Next device release, I'd look at it to see if I wanted to go down that path again... If it bothered me that much, I'd move on to a different brand and be done with it...

Another disappointing factor is the so-and-so quality of the 3 MP camera. About half of the photos I have shot with my TyTN II have turned out worse than what I got from my old i-mate JASJAM. Auto focus seems to be missing often on landscape shots and has difficulties with infinity:
(Click on image for full size photo.)
Compare the above TyTN II photo with the JASJAM photo I posted here.
Plus that the photo quality looks like 2 MP photos interpolated up to 3 MP size. So I usually keep the camera set to 2 MP :-(
(Apologies for side-tracking the topic of this thread.)
Overall I would say though that I am fairly satisfied but I doubt that my next smartphone will be anything produced by HTC.

Cool, like I say... next time you may decide not buy HTC - thats the price a company can pay if you don't like their product. Doesn't mean that they are obligated to do anything for you now... At the end of the day, their product does what they said it would - even if it's not to the standard of some of these users...
what are the chances that we will get these drivers? high or low? will it be a whole new rom? maybe windows6.1 or just 6? If they're thinking of 6.1 then we probably wont get these drivers till mid next year. photon will almost be out by then. any chances we get them before the end of the year or no?

Did you forget about the crappy camera?

Should i Buy TytnII or not?

I'm very much interested in buying this device, but after reading all the threads here and Petition...I'm totally confused.
Can anyone please sum it up ? whats going on? Should i buy it or not? Video playback issue is been solved or not?
I don't have any other device in my mind with the same specifications..
Please help me out.
Yeah im debating whether i should keep mine or not.. Seems like this video driver thing wont ever get resolved by HTC, who knows? .. Maybe when another phone that has the same chipsets releases, a developer from XDA can extract some stuff from there.. but it looks like its not going to be any time soon. Sorry for being pessimistic but I feel like i am being realistic here. HTC has no desire to fix a phone thats been out for some time now when by next year there will be an upgraded version of the phone.
Only question is... What phone should i swap it for? the Iphone? blahhhh....
Definately get it, although there are a few small nags with it, such as the video problem its still a fantastic device and just so much better than anything else out there IMO.
The GPS is fantastic, its very fast and very stable with the Cooked ROM such as Schaps or duttys. I have never had it crash on me yet and ive owned it over 2 months now. Ive only ever had to reset for planned things such as program installs etc.
Overall its a really superb device and i cant recommend it enough!
+1. Best phone I've ever used.
I love my TyTN II/Tilt.
I like my Kaiser but if you dont need GPS then you why not think about a Hermes? i personally like it a whole load better because there is a lot bigger mod scene with the Hermes. Also a slight drawback at the min is lack of sim unlock for the Kaiser so am using it as my second back up phone. My oppinions may change mind once i get it unlocked and use it more. will keep you posted
sean pint- just goto ebay and search for kaiser/tilt unlock. Once you find a seller make sure he has good feedback and buy it. I got mine for 15 dollars. Ive heard of people paying 10. It took about 6 hours for the seller to email me the unlock code. Simple as that. Good luck!!
I searched and researched for 6 months before buying my TyTN II. I love it. Sure the video driver issue is frustrating but you know what? Even with that issue its the best PDA/Phone available.
I have had mine for almost 2 months and have never had a lockup or any other problem that made me reset it.
I love mine and wouldn't trade it for anything.
If you do decide not to get it, I will echo the suggestion made earlier to get a Hermes. There is A LOT available for that device too.... but for me the Kaiser is the kit to get.
PS: The phone in my experience is OUTSTANDING.
Thanks for the Feedback guys....
Can anyone elaborate more? like what kind of issue one can face with video playback? Like does it really lag bad ? or it just bearable? Or video is just lagging in one specific format?
Does this video issue get solved if i change to third party firmware?

I would not buy this device again. It might look cool but it can give you too many frustrations. My TyTN I is infinitely more reliable.
If you are a very easy-going rich individual or a gadget freak that just has to buy this cool looking device, you should get it. It looks good, the GPS works well, wireless, etc, all good.
Here's what NOT to expect though:
1. Good camera/video recording quality
2. Anything close to acceptable video playback quality
3. 3d acceleration if you play games
4.Smooth browsing with Pocket Internet Explorer
5. Anything close to an acceptable customer service
You might also get other problems. My Kaiser for instance doesn't register fast consecutive keystrokes of the same letter. So I open PIE, I type www.google.com and it comes out as ww.gogle.com (Before anyone tells me to change the Up/Down key delay in the settings, I've already done that and the problem is always there). It's sooo much fun getting the cursor back there to correct it!!!
Browse the forums, you'll get an idea of how many bad surprises the Kaiser might hold for you, thanks to the lack of quality control by HTC. Sorry to disappoint you but if stability is your concern, don't listen to the voices luring you to buy this thing.

I have entered in bold my views on the above posters comments.
Here's what NOT to expect though:
1. Good camera/video recording quality
There is an art to getting very acceptable quality with the camera. So good quality is possible and takes better semi-light pictures than TyTn I - see here: http://www.pocketables.net/2007/12/california-thro.html
2. Anything close to acceptable video playback quality
My problems were solved via the latest Core Player. You just need to get the settings right and most videos are fine.
3. 3d acceleration if you play games
Don't use that much though my Duke Nukem is working just fine!!
4.Smooth browsing with Pocket Internet Explorer
There is a very easy fix in CAB form available for the PIE problem that takes less than 10 minutes to solve.
5. Anything close to an acceptable customer service
Never had any need for it so I cannot comment on this.
Back to me again!!
I use both TyTn I and TyTn II. My TyTn II a non branded vHTC device was smooth, fast and usable straight from the box. Video has been sorted by Core Player (latest). Yes the camera takes practice and you need to understand the auto focus (or else you'll get fuzzy pics - but once you get the hang of it it's better than TyTn I)
I was re-setting my TyTn I every two weeks. I have yet to crash my Kaiser and only soft reset after application installation if necessary. I have NEVER had to hard reset the device in several months of ownership.
I would advise against branded devices with loads of bloatware that can cause all sorts of slow downs on any device.
This is the first device I have been able to accept without endless mods and tweaks just to get in semi acceptable. Of course I have done several tweaks, but that's 'cos I enjoy doing it!!
To be honest, my general view is that folk have fewer issues with the Kaiser than the TyTn I and certainly fewer alignment and screen problems. Hanging and freezing were common on TyTn I, I hardly see that on the Kaiser and when it does it seems that if you leave it for a couple of minutes it sorts itself ou rather than needing a soft reset.
YES, if you read here or any of the Fora, you will see folk talking about nothing but problems. This is a FALSE picture - of course folk post their problems, that's what the forum is for!!
I have been around here since before the TyTn I and on balance I would not hesitate in opting for the Kaiser, though I still like the TyTn I Hermes as a very capable device - but it needs love and a lot of tweaks!!
Mike
Thanks for the input guys.
But seriously if you are buying a device by keeping in mind that it will run each and everything which you throw on it, than i think no one will buy this device...Its not about rich and all...I'll be getting this device as my primary fone and it will be performing everywork, from excel to presentation...Emails/browsing.
But after reading all the reviews and all its totally holding me back to get this device. I was more inclined to "HTC Advantage" but due to its size its holding me back..i just can't carry that brick everywhere with me..where as TytnII was the perfect for me...but its drivers are making major issue here.
I don't want to go with TytnI....i want to stick to the latest phone because in few months or so new WM 7 will be launching soon ..and when WM 7 going to Launch than no one will give a flying**** to tytnI ....
What i'm looking in device is:
Sliding QWERTY keyboard
GPS
Fast Processor above 500Mhz
I never thought to look on ebay actually. Is it the same system to unlock a tilt aswell as a vario III. just thinking because the tilt is american and the Vario III is on T-Mobile in the uk. Anyone recomend a good seller on ebay?
al just thought i would try a virgin sim and that works but when i put my 3 sim in it says its locked. rather strange

Official fix coming for HTC's driver, sort of

Check this out:
"When CEO Peter Chou himself declares that there's a fix en route for the video problems plaguing several of his company's devices, that's a pretty good sign -- there are a couple of catches, though. One, we still don't know which devices will be patched, and two, it turns out that the fix to improve video acceleration performance still won't involve an actual driver for the ATI silicon within the Qualcomm chipsets. Our mommies always told us never to look a gift horse in the mouth, so we're going to stay cautiously optimistic here until we get the actual patch out in the wild (in March, if we're lucky) for some testing."

Probably stunted machine currently but actually supported by Google with a lot of regular future upgrades -- drivers too! Can't beat that.

I wonder how it performs as far as smooth video playback is concerned (compared to the Kaiser using Windows Pocket Media Player 10.3). Not because I'm interested in getting a G1 (just like the Touch Pro, I believe it doesn't have the tilting screen of the TyTN II) but because I want to know just what the hardware is capable of in terms of processing power when proper drivers are used.
sold my tytn II also
It never worked as i hoped and expected. . .
my old ipaq 2210 did a better job showing video's and recorded tv shows.
that 's one big reason to sell for me.
the lag when ending a phonecall and screen rotating with sms did the rest.
I like the looks of the new touch HD but that seems also lagging and is not able to play video in its native resolution so it looks like more of the same but then in a higher resolution.
calling it HD and not been able to play native resolution video?
i lost my confidence in HTC for their lack in proper 2D and 3D drivers with my TYTN II, and will not travel the same road with their HD. . . . . .
A standard gsm will do for now, awaiting newer OS and Hardware.
XDA rocks tho!

the Kaiser video Driver issue

hi guys .. what's up ??
I was wondering what happened with the video issue with our TyTNs ..
I mean we are not seeing any drivers lately ..
I beleive that after more than one year of its release the HTC does not even remember the problem ..
So is it impossible mission to come up with some real working drivers ??
I mean we saw some driver from some programmers .. I really thank the programmers for them .. but the truth is that I didn't notice any improvement with their dirivers .. cuz actualy the problem to me is just about the weak video playback capibilities .. and non of the drivers did solve it .. not even a minor improvment in the video playback performance ..
I'm really happy with my kaiser .. and I'm not even thinking in replacing it .. and I might not replace it unless it bricks or breaks or sth cuz I don't see any of the mobiles which came after it better than it ..
so the big question is ..
Will the problem find a sloution in the Future ?? will someone correct the crime which was our kaiser the victim of it ??
Regards
Our phones are "Business" not "Entertainment" It looks like the poor 2d driver support is common with most if not all newer Windows Mobile phones. I looked for a few weeks online and didn't find any with drivers like the iPhone has.

Just think .. why to prevent them from doing their best instead of trying to make them much better ??
Have you tried out the Samsung Omina D3D Drivers? They gave a bit of a improvement over the stock HTC Video Drivers, I don't have the link with me right now but i'm absolutely sure those drivers can be found with search.

Did you remember when you opened the Kaiser box when you received it ? Around the Kaiser, there were symbols showing you that it was a multimedia device ... That's the way HTC sold it ! But they lied, it is very bad (the worst ?) in displaying videos and we all know that now.
Also, on their website, they talked about all the capabilities of the onboard processor (D3D, VGA videos playback, etc...) and they removed this webpage when everyone was complaining about the lack of drivers in the Kaiser ... I saved this webpage on my local PC before they removed it !!!
So NO, this device was not told to be only a business device, and again, HTC lied to us.
Already threads discussing this.....
