I just bought an AT&T Kaiser and modified the registry to hide contacts on my SIM card (HKCU\ControlPanel\Phone\ShowSIM changed to a 0 value). It works immediately after change, but if I have to reset the phone (even after a period of several hours) the change reverts. I have made other changes however, and they hold through soft-reset. Any Ideas?

Do follow my articles in the Wiki / in the General forum, I've explained the reason (and cure) for this SEVERAL times, in SEVERAL of them. ALWAYS power down (suspend) the phone before resetting at least once. This will make sure the Registry changes are flushed back to the flash storage.
I apologize...I've been looking for a day or so and must not have put in the right search words. Thanks for your help.

This doesn't work for the Sim Contact's Registry tweak, unless I'm doing it wrong... Did it work for you Benyork?
unfortunately it did not work...actually the registry reverted on power-up, that is even before the soft-reset. Something is odd about this particular key.
Gee, i guess ill help.
suprised no one gave you guys this yet
Thanks. The fix works perfectly. Glad to know I wasn't losing my mind.
Brilliant. Thanks ekw. And thanks for asking the question Benyork. I kept forgeting to...

Hi,
Anyone is having problem with backlight setting reset after reboot (soft-reset)?
I set the backlight under battery to turn off after 5 minutes.
However, after soft-reset it is reset back to 10s ...
This issue is quite famous, but I cant find a definite answer or solution.
Please let me know if you have a workaround, etc.
PS: I checked the HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\ and the LogLevel is set to 0
Thanks.
I'm having the same problem, and I've tried all the suggested reg fixes. I've also tried the Battery Status plugin, but its reputed backlight fix is nowhere to be found.
Since there's no other reply to this thread and I can't find a working solution elsewhere on xda-devs (have searched for 'backlight', 'fix', '10 sec', and combinations of these terms), I guess no-one's got a fix for this yet?
I have a similar problem, only that i need it 10 seconds but it resets to 30 seconds.
My problem's been resolved magically.
Being idiotically stubborn, I kept setting my timeout to 120 and soft-resetting. Finally, for no rhyme or reason, it stuck. Hm.
Incidentally, that last reset that worked was of the stylus-poke sort, not the hold-power-button sort.
I have the same issue with the backlight - but biggest headache is the backlight turning off on the phone after a couple of seconds. This is a real problem...
Last week I realised I'd lost amex card when going to pay at an airport duty free shop. Made the call the call to Amex but didn't have time to input the option number I wanted to get through and talk to someone before the backlight killed the interface.
Gave up trying and swapped out SIM to old Sony Ericsson which did the job in a minute.
Only way I've found to get the backlight back whilst making a call is to toggle the thumb wheel - you get the volume icon but can at least see the keypad.
The idea for killing the screen was supposed to prevent unintended pushes of the keypad when phone in use. But if the keypad is hidden anyway - and you have to select it to get it back I'm struggling with the logic here.
I have also reluctantly removed the PIN security request to get round the start menu locking after using the phone.
Backlight issue again - as previous post entering security code outdoors.
I'd like to try the edit suggested above but I'm new to windows mobile. Can someone tell me how you actually get to a file to edit it - I've tried making a path but that's obviously wrong. Is there a simple command line or navigation protocol withing the file explorer? Dumb I know, I'm not an engineer but like to think I know my way around things .
On the whole I really like the device for email etc but hate it as a phone which is an important aspect of what I need it for!
Any help or workarounds very gratefully received - and thank god I found this site - it has been a huge help so far.

It seemed to fix it for some people
Regards,
Nika.
I know this is my first post here but I've done my best to search the forums and I haven't found anything that looks like it helps me.
I just got my AT&T Tilt yesterday. It came unlocked (I'm using it with T-Mobile) and has an HTC ROM installed as well as various other apps (Ms. Pacman, TomTom 6, SuperDoku, etc.). I had some issues with it locking up yesterday (similar to what I'm experiencing now but to a much, much lesser degree) when I was playing around with it but those issues somehow corrected themselves.
This morning I installed the Tilt keyboard fix that TaurusBullba posted on here back in June to fix some mapping issues. Since I installed and soft reseted, everything has been going kinda haywire. The Wi-Fi turned itself off and I can't turn it back on. When I slide out the keyboard the orientation stays in portrait mode. When I try to shut down the phone using the power button it hangs forever. Now, actually, half the time I press the power button nothing happens at all.
I've tried uninstalling the CAB but that didn't fix anything at all. I'm afraid to try a hard reset because, from my understanding, I'm going to lose everything that came pre-installed on my phone for me. I should probably also add that last night I installed the Google Maps CAB with no problems whatsoever. Is there some simple solution I'm overlooking? Thanks much!
I would advise that if you have tried soft resets to try and resolve the issues and it hasn't worked, then perhaps a hard reset?
It sounds as if the software you have installed as either caused the problems or exacberated them (ie made them worse).
With hard reset it wipes everything back to when you got it. If you are able I would suggest that you plug it into the computer and make sure ActiveSync backups up your contents. You may also want to use this get all the files on the main memory either to the storage card or to you're PC.
As this is yo're first post I don't know how au fait you are with the above that I have mentioned
The preloaded apps will be reloaded again. You won't have an empty ROM if you do a hard reset. It will be as if you just flashed the ROM again.
Thanks for the replies guys. I went ahead and did a hard reset and it looks like the only thing I lost (or at least the only thing I miss) was TomTom. I've already reinstalled that using a link I found on here, and everything seems to be good to go.
I still have no idea what might have caused the problems though, so I'm afraid that they might come back or I might repeat some dumb mistake I made. I guess I'll just have to live with that for now.
clear storage / hard resets no big deal, just expect to do it every other week while you're finding all the cabs that work (or dont work) for you..
I generally clear storaged every week when i first got my tilt until I found all the app's I liked that didn't have side effects
I know, I know before the torrent of replies happens - "Why didn't you Search", "You should have searched before posting" et etc ...... I did search and the results didn't help
I have two Kaisers with identical software builds (slightly different contents but the base OS is identical). On both of these I have (had..) the backlight issue where if the backlight was off when the device was locked (either via the 'Device Lock' Today item or via Battery Status 'DeviceLock on Wakeup'). To enable the backlight it must be unlocked and in bright sunlight this is very difficult.
Now for some reason this behaviour has changed on one of the Kaisers - the 30-second dimming still happens when locked or unlocked, now however tapping the screen turns the backlight on. This is exactly the behaviour I want I assumed there would be a registry difference between the two however I can't find one. All the values in the keys
Code:
HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\
HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\LockLevel\
HKLM\ControlPanel\BackLight\
are identical. I was hoping to copy the changed registry values and include them in my next ROM re-build but I can't see any differences.
Does anyone know what other registry keys I should look at?
Cheers
Andy
Install this cab and power the phone off and power it back on.
Hey presto brightscreen when you want to unlock the phone!

Thanks for that but that is the behaviour I have at the moment without a startup application. There is obviously something in the registry that is making this work as I want it on my Kaiser. I just want to know what it is?
Andy
I think I have fixed it....
After rechecking the registry settings I found a difference and I don't know how I missed this previously. I have made the change on the Kaiser that wasn't working as I wanted it and now it's working exactly as I would like:
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\BackLight\LockLevel]
"LockLevel"=dword:ffffffff
No more guessing when trying to unlock it in sunlight....
If anyone is interested?
Cheers
Andy
TQ very much.
It is working like you said.
No need to use 3rd party app. Just a simple registry tweaking.

dim backlight on device-lock
I recently flashed to a WM6.1 ROM (ATT 3.57.502.2) and I have noticed that now when you enable the device-lock it does NOT dim the screen. I actually preferred it that way as it helped me realize when I had a successful tap to enable the lock. Not to mention battery-life issues when putting phone in a tight pocket, immediately afterwards.
Can somebody enlighten me on how to make it behave as it used to? I tried to edit some of the registry entries mentioned in this thread, and others, but none seem to apply to the device-lock. Again, I'd like to have the screen dim on device-lock as it did with my old ROM.
Thanks in advance everyone.

Thanks, that works... BUT
on my Kaiser only until the next soft reset, then dword is back to 00000000. Anyone else see the same? Solution?

Found out that the cab from post #2 partially solves it. You still have no backlight the first time after a reset, but at least you don't have to go into the registry every time after resetting.
Too bad it sets the level to x0A instead of x0FFFFFFFF.
Key to try for backlight woes
I've had this problem since flashing from 6.0 to 6.1 AND selecting an unlock password at initial startup. Sometimes it would reset backlight time to 10 sec. after soft reset and it was even resetting it without a soft reset for a while. Changing the "Locklevel" key helps as previously posted, but sometimes it would get reset to "0" from my setting of "7" intermittently and then the problems returned. a soft reset always reset this key to "0". I found another key below which I changed from "1" to "0". everything has been totally normal for a week of heavy use. I have not yet reset, but at least it behaves normally even when I use the Today screen Device Lock.
The key is HKLM-Control Panel-Backlight-DimBKLinUnlockScreen
The only remaining issue is sometimes when I power on from suspend the screen comes on and then goes off immediately. Hitting the button again keeps it on.
Good Luck!
Its not letting me receive any calls. Because by the time I press "Accept" it becomes unresponsive for like a couple of mins and the call has already ended.
Its taking forever to load any apps too. It takes forever to open the Programs folder or the Settings folder. Everything takes like a min on the phone now.
I don't know what has caused this. It was working fine yesterday. I haven't installed any new apps either.
I have the HTC stock ROM downloaded from this website. I've had it installed for a few months now without a problem.
Can someone please help me in understanding whats causing this?
I've restarted the phone a few times now. The boot time is around 15 mins for some reason. It stays at the Window Mobile 6 screen for 15 mins before starting up.
Hard reset anyone?
Is that the only solution?
I'm sick of this and slowing turning anti-windows.
Some times things need to be refreshed. Don't be scared, it will be ok.

Somebody please explain to us that this slowness/unresponsiveness is unique for the TYTN II?! Should I expect the same from a HTC Touch or a Samsung?

Have you, by chance, been experimenting with network folders? I saw something similar with the file explorer, after I had connected to a network drive at home. It was trying to reconnect while I was away from the home network.
You should expect it from any electronic device like this. Maybe not 100% of the time and not 100% of them, but things like this do happen. There are too many things trying to live in harmony and not step on each others feet for there to never be a problem.
Do a hard reset and see what happens. If it doesn't solve your problem then it's time to look into a warranty claim. If you can use the phone, just backup your numbers and then reset. It's really easy and doesn't take much time to get things back to normal.

I didn't touch any of the system folders. In fact, nothing was done to the phone since yesterday except send/receive phone calls and play Solitaire.
If you don't reset it then don't complain.

I've done this (hard reset) before and I have every right to complain. Not trying to be a troll, but sometimes I feel I should've bought an iP***e instead.
Right now I'm trying to take a backup of my files on the Storage card, but Total Commander is unresponsive (trying to copy 5 files for the past 30 mins).
I know I'll eventually hard reset this thing, but I'm just pissed right now.
So you don't think people have to hard reset their iphones? I laugh in your general direction.
If you can't make or receive calls, send or receive text messages, or access email or the web
Check the cell signal indicator in the status bar at the top of the screen. If there are no bars, or if it says "No service," try moving to a different location. If you're indoors, try going outdoors or moving closer to a window.
Check to make sure you’re in an area with network coverage. Go to your carrier's website to see network coverage areas.
Make sure airplane mode isn't on. From the Home screen choose Settings, then turn Airplane Mode off.
If that doesn't work, turn airplane mode on, wait 15 seconds, then turn airplane mode off again.
Make sure to include an area code for every phone number in your contacts list that you use to send or receive text messages.
If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a few seconds until a red slider appears, then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Note: If you enter the SIM PIN incorrectly three times, you may need to contact your carrier for a Personal Unlocking Key (PUK) to enable your SIM card again.
If that doesn't work, there may be an issue with your wireless service. Call your carrier or go to your carrier's website.
If that doesn't work, restore the iPhone software. See this document or see "Updating and Restoring iPhone Software" in the iPhone User's Guide.

Come on now. You know what I meant. I wasn't trying to imply that at all. I was just venting. Sorry if it offended anyone.
is it possible that its just having trouble reading the sd card (if you have one?) maybe the file system is becoming corrupt on the card and its constantly trying to read it?..

I thought about this. I tried using the phone without the SD card. But the behavious was the same. Currently I'm hard resetting it
So how did it go?
Just finished hard resetting it. The phone works now. Fortunately I had an export of my contacts in an XML file (using a .NET utility that I wrote.) Unfortunately, I haven't written the import part of the utility yet
The phone works, but my docs and pics are gone. The SD card works fine. Thanks for your help guys.
Outlook works nice for backing up contacts and there is also a program you run from your phone that does the same thing. I think it's PIM backup
use cleartemp from now on to clear unneeded items on every start up
it is pim back up
its the BEST

More junk to cause this sort of problem.
Hi,
I have tried several ROMs, all of them work just fine until (after a period of time that may range from hours to days) and when I soft-reset my device, it acts like if I hard-reset it; goes through the setup, contacts gone.. etc. Anybody?
I do flash ROMs following the the steps in the related threads.
I've tried to search threads for anything like this, but I couldn't find any. (I hope I didn't miss any post, I know how annoying it would be for more to ask for something that was asked before).
Ah, and this is my first post! I'd like to thank all the devs for their outstanding work.
Thanks.
How do you reset the device from the back of the phone or from the software.
If you do it from the back of the phone, it should only do a saft reset not eraase anything.
If you do it using software on the phone, It maybe written to do a hard reset, I advise to check with the maker of the software or ROM what type of reset it is suppose to do.
