I know, I know before the torrent of replies happens - "Why didn't you Search", "You should have searched before posting" et etc ...... I did search and the results didn't help
I have two Kaisers with identical software builds (slightly different contents but the base OS is identical). On both of these I have (had..) the backlight issue where if the backlight was off when the device was locked (either via the 'Device Lock' Today item or via Battery Status 'DeviceLock on Wakeup'). To enable the backlight it must be unlocked and in bright sunlight this is very difficult.
Now for some reason this behaviour has changed on one of the Kaisers - the 30-second dimming still happens when locked or unlocked, now however tapping the screen turns the backlight on. This is exactly the behaviour I want I assumed there would be a registry difference between the two however I can't find one. All the values in the keys
Code:
HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\
HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\LockLevel\
HKLM\ControlPanel\BackLight\
are identical. I was hoping to copy the changed registry values and include them in my next ROM re-build but I can't see any differences.
Does anyone know what other registry keys I should look at?
Cheers
Andy
Install this cab and power the phone off and power it back on.
Hey presto brightscreen when you want to unlock the phone!

Thanks for that but that is the behaviour I have at the moment without a startup application. There is obviously something in the registry that is making this work as I want it on my Kaiser. I just want to know what it is?
Andy
I think I have fixed it....
After rechecking the registry settings I found a difference and I don't know how I missed this previously. I have made the change on the Kaiser that wasn't working as I wanted it and now it's working exactly as I would like:
Code:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\BackLight\LockLevel]
"LockLevel"=dword:ffffffff
No more guessing when trying to unlock it in sunlight....
If anyone is interested?
Cheers

TQ very much.
It is working like you said.
No need to use 3rd party app. Just a simple registry tweaking.

dim backlight on device-lock
I recently flashed to a WM6.1 ROM (ATT 3.57.502.2) and I have noticed that now when you enable the device-lock it does NOT dim the screen. I actually preferred it that way as it helped me realize when I had a successful tap to enable the lock. Not to mention battery-life issues when putting phone in a tight pocket, immediately afterwards.
Can somebody enlighten me on how to make it behave as it used to? I tried to edit some of the registry entries mentioned in this thread, and others, but none seem to apply to the device-lock. Again, I'd like to have the screen dim on device-lock as it did with my old ROM.
Thanks in advance everyone.

Thanks, that works... BUT
on my Kaiser only until the next soft reset, then dword is back to 00000000. Anyone else see the same? Solution?

Found out that the cab from post #2 partially solves it. You still have no backlight the first time after a reset, but at least you don't have to go into the registry every time after resetting.
Too bad it sets the level to x0A instead of x0FFFFFFFF.
Key to try for backlight woes
I've had this problem since flashing from 6.0 to 6.1 AND selecting an unlock password at initial startup. Sometimes it would reset backlight time to 10 sec. after soft reset and it was even resetting it without a soft reset for a while. Changing the "Locklevel" key helps as previously posted, but sometimes it would get reset to "0" from my setting of "7" intermittently and then the problems returned. a soft reset always reset this key to "0". I found another key below which I changed from "1" to "0". everything has been totally normal for a week of heavy use. I have not yet reset, but at least it behaves normally even when I use the Today screen Device Lock.
The key is HKLM-Control Panel-Backlight-DimBKLinUnlockScreen
The only remaining issue is sometimes when I power on from suspend the screen comes on and then goes off immediately. Hitting the button again keeps it on.
Good Luck!

Hi all.
I´ve installed the Custom 2.26 ROM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=276700) and it works great except for one tiiny detail. The Dpad doesnt work anymore. Its completely dead. I suspect that this could be related to smartskey. What happend is that after I turned off the phone and turned it on again the Dpad was dead.
I have tried to alter the smartskey.ini file and set the DPAD value to 0 but it didnt do anything. When I run smartskey.exe all I get is an popup asking me if I want to close smartskey. Whats that about? How does it work?
Does anyone have a clue what could be wrong and/or how to solve it?
Thanks

i have never heard of this problem with smartskey. however, if you really do believe it's related to smartskey, you can close the program by following the steps:
1. click the smartskey.exe
2. a popup window will ask if you really want to close it. just click "ok".
3. then you must change STARTONREBOOT=0 in the ini file.
4. next, go to windows>startup folder and remove any shortcut refering to smartskey.
5. soft reset your phone. it will start witnout smartskey.
and you can confirm if the problem is really related to smartskey, although I really doubt it.
if the above fail, hard reset. if still fail, reflashing to your last known good rom file. if all fail..... you've got yourself a new dpad hardware.
I think your are right, it´s not smartskey. Reverted back to my old 2.17 Sve ROM and I now have to same problem, it was fine for a while but now I have the problem again. I have installed very few apps; TotalCommander, TCPMP, and some a2dp cabs.
I´m thinking if I could attack this problem from a different angle; to install something that remapps the Dpad and see if that works. I have a hunch that the Dpad is locked for some reason and not broken.
Another approach is to go in the registry and have a look but I really dont know where to look.
3rd option is to take it back to the manufactuer. I suspect they will discover that I messed with it (unlocked it, installed dodgy ROMS and such) and refuse me.
On a sidenote I got my Sony Ericson HBH-DS970 headphones today. Looks really nice. I think that someone said the sound quality improves with AKU so i´m eager to get some new ROM installed. Is it possbile to just install AKU upgrades? or are they always bundled with a ROM ?
Thanks alot for your reply ecchi, I´ve posted about this problem a few time and never got any response.

Hi,
Anyone is having problem with backlight setting reset after reboot (soft-reset)?
I set the backlight under battery to turn off after 5 minutes.
However, after soft-reset it is reset back to 10s ...
This issue is quite famous, but I cant find a definite answer or solution.
Please let me know if you have a workaround, etc.
PS: I checked the HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\ and the LogLevel is set to 0
Thanks.
I'm having the same problem, and I've tried all the suggested reg fixes. I've also tried the Battery Status plugin, but its reputed backlight fix is nowhere to be found.
Since there's no other reply to this thread and I can't find a working solution elsewhere on xda-devs (have searched for 'backlight', 'fix', '10 sec', and combinations of these terms), I guess no-one's got a fix for this yet?
I have a similar problem, only that i need it 10 seconds but it resets to 30 seconds.
My problem's been resolved magically.
Being idiotically stubborn, I kept setting my timeout to 120 and soft-resetting. Finally, for no rhyme or reason, it stuck. Hm.
Incidentally, that last reset that worked was of the stylus-poke sort, not the hold-power-button sort.
I have the same issue with the backlight - but biggest headache is the backlight turning off on the phone after a couple of seconds. This is a real problem...
Last week I realised I'd lost amex card when going to pay at an airport duty free shop. Made the call the call to Amex but didn't have time to input the option number I wanted to get through and talk to someone before the backlight killed the interface.
Gave up trying and swapped out SIM to old Sony Ericsson which did the job in a minute.
Only way I've found to get the backlight back whilst making a call is to toggle the thumb wheel - you get the volume icon but can at least see the keypad.
The idea for killing the screen was supposed to prevent unintended pushes of the keypad when phone in use. But if the keypad is hidden anyway - and you have to select it to get it back I'm struggling with the logic here.
I have also reluctantly removed the PIN security request to get round the start menu locking after using the phone.
Backlight issue again - as previous post entering security code outdoors.
I'd like to try the edit suggested above but I'm new to windows mobile. Can someone tell me how you actually get to a file to edit it - I've tried making a path but that's obviously wrong. Is there a simple command line or navigation protocol withing the file explorer? Dumb I know, I'm not an engineer but like to think I know my way around things .
On the whole I really like the device for email etc but hate it as a phone which is an important aspect of what I need it for!
Any help or workarounds very gratefully received - and thank god I found this site - it has been a huge help so far.

I just bought an AT&T Kaiser and modified the registry to hide contacts on my SIM card (HKCU\ControlPanel\Phone\ShowSIM changed to a 0 value). It works immediately after change, but if I have to reset the phone (even after a period of several hours) the change reverts. I have made other changes however, and they hold through soft-reset. Any Ideas?

Do follow my articles in the Wiki / in the General forum, I've explained the reason (and cure) for this SEVERAL times, in SEVERAL of them. ALWAYS power down (suspend) the phone before resetting at least once. This will make sure the Registry changes are flushed back to the flash storage.
I apologize...I've been looking for a day or so and must not have put in the right search words. Thanks for your help.

This doesn't work for the Sim Contact's Registry tweak, unless I'm doing it wrong... Did it work for you Benyork?
unfortunately it did not work...actually the registry reverted on power-up, that is even before the soft-reset. Something is odd about this particular key.
Gee, i guess ill help.
suprised no one gave you guys this yet
Thanks. The fix works perfectly. Glad to know I wasn't losing my mind.

Resolve. It was the esset avirus program

Did you just install S2U2 1.0x??
Jep! Indeed!
But i have the 'volume control' function off
I've got this problem too! anyone got a solution? thanks
What about setting S2U2's last option "Don't use KeyBoard Hook" to ON ?
I don't have S2U2, any idea why I might be having problems?
I got the same problem..
After uninstalling the latest S2U2 the volume keys started working again.
There must be a bug in the S2U2 code.
same problem for me. It's S2U2 the cause. But after press the volume key, you can increase and decrease volume by touch screen.

Just enable volumecontroll in S2U2. Then it will work. Just did and it works fine now.
I have this problem, I have completely lost the up/down volume controls with the hard buttons, instead it just acts as an up / down in menus etc!! I don't have anything like S2U2 etc installed, But I have updated to the HTC 1.93 ROM
Any advise is much appreciated

I have done plenty of soft resets, no Hard Resets, I haven't been in a position to do a Hard Reset recently and loose all my data been too busy.
Just thought it might be something simple!! A Setting or something.
When I get chance I will perform a Hard Reset and see if that works. I assume afterwards it will automatically install manilla etc. Like on first boot.
Cheers

[FIX][08.04.2011]Patch for "Screen won't come on after device wakes" (RHO_S2_00895)
Problem: Device doesn't come back from suspended mode. Pressing the power button, sliding out the keyboard or taking out the stylus does nothing.
Occurrence: Random.
Quick fix: None known.
Request: Kinda all over the Rhod forums.
Affected ROMs: HTC Stock S2 2.07, all custom roms based on 2.07 drivers. Probably 2.10 drivers are partly affected too.
Patch:
For stock roms (standard HTC patch package, .exe)
For custom roms (download this if you're unsure, works for stock roms too)
For cooks (extract and put into OEMDrivers)
Thanks!
Let's see (in time) if the SOD's are finished for us.

Installed. Didn't work . I think the flex cable is crapping out. Also had the problem where if the screen was fully slid, it'd black out. Now it's been like that every postion.
Although, the power button works to turn the screen off, it won't turn it back on.
It doesn't work for me either
The only thing that I was able to install on my Tilt 2 (latest stock ROM) was this file Jackos RHO_S2_00895.cab
Nothing changed.
The screen goes on but what stays off is the backlight and the only way to get the backlight to stay on in a reboot. Then try to adjust the brightness from the settings menu and moving the slides doesn't do anything. The brightness stays to the max no matter what.
Is it the light sensor? can it be disabled or checked somehow?
Thanks anyway I hope your fix helps others,
G

Does it sometimes don't come back or always?
SoD, Sleep Of Death, so called the hangup issue does happen only after the device is suspended for a long time. It does occur kinda often, but not always if you turn off the screen. If your device never comes back from standby it isn't a problem with SoD for sure.
That would be my [email protected] cable....

The exe file (for stock roms) is intended to work on Europe roms. I have no knowledge of HTC releasing this patch for other regions.
It's no fix for any problem with the phone The patch doesn't even touch the backlight thing.

I do not think it's a flexcable problem. If I can turn the screen off and power on the device with the 'power button', it has to be something software.
I have to check again if the device comes back on, but with really really low backlight.
It's annoying, I have to restart to see a text, missed call, etc.
Thanks for your help so far.
Won't wake up
I tried loading this patch after doing yet another hard reset to try to recover from these outages. It doesn't work. Within an hour of installing it, the problem came back. My specific problem is the system goes to sleep after a minute, and it usually comes back with the power button. But after normal usage for awhile (sometimes hours, sometimes weeks without a problem), it goes to sleep and needs a red-button-reset to turn back on. Then as soon as it goes to sleep again after powering up, it's off forever. The only real recover after reaching this "cycle of death" is a hard reset (full memory erase, back to factory settings). Then it will work normally again for awhile.
I'm not sure if this is exactly the problem the other submitters were seeing, but it is surely related.
I'm off to do yet another factory reset. WM 6.5 is not worth a tinker's damn.

It's a pity that it doesn't work for you. This is a patch for Europe branded devices, I don't even see the fix at any other region-based HTC support site.
Personally I never experienced SoD, so I cannot guarantee that it does work. All I know is that this fix is supposed to help with "constant hang". Whatever it is. It's a official fix and I didn't encounter any problems with running it on my Europe branded Rhod.
Jackos is this in your ROM? I have found several times my TP2 needs a reset as the power button does not bring it life. If I take the stylus out (when this happens) the row of keys light up, but still the display is blank. I assume it's already in your ROM (Jackos S3 1.1.2 SleekBASIC) otherwise I would have installed it.
It's going to be included from version 1.1.3 and up.

So...how do I uninstall it? I am on sprint in the US and have the latest official win 6.5 ROM and downloaded this update on my phone through a tech website and after installing it none of my keys works except for the power button. Apparently being for Europe it has corrupted my phone and none of the talk, end, windows, back or keyboard buttons work now. I need to revert this update, is there a way without doing a hard reset. I don't want to reconfigure all my settings that aren't backed up.
