I currently have an At&t tilt that came with the stock software. I was wondering if I should switch over the the HTC rom? What are the benefits? What are the cons?
Also is it true I can use tomtom with the HTC rom?
yes, there is benifits because it will free up space available, and will open everything smoother and faster. Yes, you can use TOMTOM with HTC Roms, i have.. I am using Tmobile so the ATT crap had to go.. good luck!
Read the descriptions of the different roms and see if they appeal to you. TomTom shold work on all of the roms including the stock tilt rom. I run it on my tilt with no problems at all.
Ok I looked through the wiki and while it shows how to flash the HTC rom on there, it didn't mention a comparison between the two(sorry if I missed it).
Could anyone give me a link comparing the two?
Is it risky to flash my phone? Can it brick easily and can it come out of being bricked?
Anyone that has had both roms and tell me which they prefer?

I haven't seen any cons mentioned yet, and I think there is one.
I have read that there are many benefits to changing to a non ATT ROM, but keep in mind it will voice you warranty. That's why I have never flashed.
In most cases, you could just flash back to ATT ROM, if you needed warranty assistance, but my big fear is what if one encounters the infamous Red Light Of Death and is unable to flash back, or some other situation which makes the phone inoperable?
I'm just too chicken, and too broke to risk it
Original Poster,
I believe I remember seeing a thread in this forum (probably quite deep at this point as it was some time ago) comparing the stock tilt rom vs the HTC OEM rom. I'm betting a search for this thread will get you the answers you are looking for.

thanks. I think ill stay with the att rom until my warranty runs out. The tilt comes with 1 year right?
can I download tomtom from their site or do I need to do something special to get it?

Hi:
Yes, the Tilt has a 1 year warranty. ATT is actually VERY helpful and quick at replacing your phone if you ever need it (as long as it doesn't have physical or liquid damage).
As far as Tom Tom, the Tilt doesn't include it at all. If you want it you will have to buy the full version (which I believe is around $150).ATT did this to try to trick you into using TeleNav (for $10 a month).
If you search around, I believe I have seen the taster version (which came on TyTN II) floating around. I haven't used it, so I'm not sure exactly where I saw it.
is there any free gps software out there? doesnt have to be tomtom.

Google Maps, and Windows Live are both free, although for me they weren't very good. I just don't see the point of Mapping software that doesn't have voice announcements, doesn't seem safe to sit and stare at your phone while driving, lol.
But that's just me, others have said they really like both.
The paid for apps do have voice alerts etc.
I personally use iGo 2006, and really like it. I have also heard very good things about TomTom.
nav4all is free. its very basic, but it gets the job done without costing anything. I would suggest saving up the 100 dollars it costs to buy a copy of iGuidance 4. You get PC, UMPC/Laptop, and PocketPC versions all on the same disk for one price. It also doesnt require a data connection to work, but does require 1.3gb of storage space on your memory card for all the map data. So youll have to figure in another 15-30 dollars for a 2gb card, unless you already have one you can use.

Ok I have been seriously thinking about buying one of these and have already started saving my money to get one but before I take the plunge and spend almost $800.
I guess my first question is a hardware question. I have read a few posts about people having issues with the USB being "crappy" and also the digitizer cutting out due to loose internal connections. I really want to know if these are very common problems or rare instances of hardware failure.
Seccondly, it seems like the firmware is kinda buggy from things that I've read and that the phone's release was rushed and the firmware suffered the consequences. I know there is no cube on the Kaiser, (honestly glad to hear it... its a memory wasting piece of junk IMHO...) I know that TouchFlo is not on the phone and honestly, it's not neccessary to me.
Third and finally, I have T-Mobile as my wireless carrier and if I were to buy a Kaiser, would it be possible to configure it for T-Mobile's GPRS and EDGE settings for their Total Internet package that I have? I am a big user of the internet on my Wizard and would need it if I bought a Kaiser.
I suppose what I'm asking is are there any serious firmware flaws that drive you guys(and gals) crazy and is the hardware commonly unreliable on these phones? I really like what I see on the HTC website and I have done alot of looking around on ebay and love the performance specs I have read but don't want to spend a ton of money if it's not worth the money. You know?
Any and all help on this matter would be GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks in advance, Dan.
Honestly it's not a problem.
My Kaiser (and my Wife's and a work friend) are all fine. There are a few sniggles with the firmware, that I'm sure will be sorted, as lets be honest all first edition firmware's have.
The device DOES have TouchFlo, just no Cube......
The internet etc are all fine... I'm on T-Mobile as well....
Go for it, it's the best QVGA device out there at the moment.
Mine has no problems and is fantastic!.
Matt.

I'm gonna go for it. I figure what do I have to lose? Money? I can always get more... Besides it seems like a well built phone and from what everyone has told me and everything I've read, it seems to be completely compatible with T-mobile which is a plus.
I'm saving guys... Sooner than later I hope, I will be an active member of the Kaiser community but for now, It's Wizard for me.
Unemployed, in the middle of a job search, and my Tilt succumbs to the RLoD. Yay!
Looks like the only solution is to obtain a replacement phone from AT&T. As a flash-aholic (thanks, Dutty ), I'm really wondering about their replacement policy, as some have mentioned that they'll bill your account for the replacement phone in some cases. (I obviously refuse to pay for a replacement phone when mine is dead after only three months... much less pay full price for a refurb!)
It's been determined that this problem is NOT isolated to reflashed phones; since stock ROMs succumb to it as well, my flashing has nothing to do with the problem. Obviously, I can't flash back to the original ROM because the phone is a brick. However, because it's a brick, they won't know I've flashed a custom ROM until they repair it somehow.
So is the charge billed to my account only as long as it takes for me to return the broken phone? Is it only billed if I fail to return the broken phone? Will it show up down the road when they realize I loaded a custom ROM? (Again - unemployed, so can't afford to pay for another phone anyway.)
Finally, and most importantly - has anyone with the RLoD (or any other phone issue) returned a custom ROM-loaded phone to AT&T? If so, what was your experience?
Thanks so much - using my old Sony Ericsson Z500a for the past week has been ridiculous, and I really want to know if I can make the call to AT&T or not...
ok, well first of all pay attention to the warnings... 3 months old or not when you flashed the different spl, or cooked rom you voided the warranty.. yes the phone could be defective, but any manufacturer can refuse repairs or charge you for the repairs since it was flashed with a non htc/att rom..
As far as the return process... its an advanced type rma in 99% of the cases meaning they will ship you a refurbed unit with the materials needed to ship yours back... if they dont recieve your defective phone within so many days they will charge your account for the replacement(this is to prevent fraud, obviously). I have also heard in some rare cases where people were charged for the replacement after the repair facility notified of an unapproved rom/bootloader on the phone. and in some cases people get away with it...
so its 50/50 shot... i would do everything possible to return it to a stock bootloader and rom before sending back (which in your case you might just have to roll the dice..)
ive exchange many phones and i dont flash to stock roms and ive never had a issue
I was in the exact same position as you about a month ago. I got the RLOD about 4 days into using my tilt and it had been running the HTC stock rom for 3 days, I flashed it the day after I got it.
When the RLOD hit, I was really worried. I was in the 30 day return period, so all I had to do was take it to the store and get a new one. I knew they wouldn't be able to tell in the store, as the consumer and retail end is really non-technical. I was afraid that if they revived the phone at ATT tech or HTC that they would find out.
This said, I built a little contraption at work that hooked up to my 12v car battery and wires into the battery prongs on the tilt. I figured the tilt could handle 12v without catching on fire - it did. However, I'm completely sure they any data will be completely unrecoverable, and the only thing that will salvage is the case. I figured they have no way to call you on a total phone fry, because it could be lots of things that cause that. However, you should have heard the noise it made. I almost made a video, but it was too incriminating. 12v is devastating to a phone, it was cool! I cooked a 600 dollar piece of equipment and got a new one!
That was over a month ago, no word from anyone. Also, I saw on the RLOD post that one user said HTC replaced the whole motherboard as that was the issue - if this is the case I'm sure that all of your old data stored on the ROM in the motherboard goes in the trash as well, as they probably don't take the time to machine re-solder used boards.
Your probably fine, as all RLOD's seem non-relivable. If you want to make a 12v fryer, it's easy. I took a lot of time on mine, because it was fun, but the gist of it is to get a wire from positive to positive and negative to negative from your 12v to your phone. If you do this, please be careful, and DONT touch the wires together because it will cause and arc and melt your prongs - no good. I built a full fryer with a switch and everything, but it was overboard.
My 2 cents.
Also, to avoid this I am sticking with the ATT rom from here on out. It's too risky for something so expensive. I have my phone the exach was it was with the stock HTC minus a few small things. doing a hard reset and pulling the battery before customization works miracles. Almost everything else is available in cabs.

The AT&T ROM is by far the most boring and least productive IMO. Couldn't you flash to the HTC ROM and be fine under warranty/returns?

It is boring, but when you get rid of bloatware and install the joys that HTC has available its pretty much the same as the stock HTC rom. You can still get the cube and today screen and everything else in cabs.
I think your voiding by hardSPL, not by having the stock HTC ROM. The egg comes before the chicken.
Just a thought...
Does anybody think that there is a correlation between phones being sent back to AT&T with HardSPL still on the device and the fact that HardSPL has not worked on the latest display driver (1.57.00, 1.81.00 and 1.82.00) equipped Kaiser's?

You are correct - I'll have to roll the dice, as there's no way I can return it to stock condition. It won't start.
Thanks for your comments, everyone. So far, I've got:
someone advising that sending it back is a 50/50 chance
someone who has returned several phones with non-stock ROMs without repercussion from AT&T
someone worried enough that they fried the phone completely (awesome!)
So now I only need to hear from one last person: someone who HAS had to pay for a replacement phone from AT&T. For any reason, but specifically because you had a custom ROM on it...
Thanks again, all!

So made the call yesterday, got the replacement phone today, less than 24 hours from TX to CO. Great customer service, but I couldn't get them to pick up the overnight shipping as some had said I could. $12 ain't bad though.
Hopefully my custom ROM-flashed brick won't do me in for $500, but I'll let y'all know if it does.

Are you bricked too? Or merely curious as to the fate of us cursed few?
In other news, my replacement unit won't stay connected to the cell network. Even when it occasionally shows 4 bars, I can't make or receive calls. OS is sluggish too. Guess I'll flash the radio, maybe the ROM, then maybe send THIS one back too.
Does anyone know if my new IMEI number might affect my phone performance? Meaning, do I have to call AT&T and let them know my new handset's IMEI number?

You and I have had identical issues! After I got my replacement, I couldn't make or receive calls even with service. It's not the ROM or radio, it's ATT. I had to call and get to a higher level tech, because everyone else told me there were zero problems with my account and that I must have bad reception at my house. I knew for a fact I have full service at home. Whenever I tried to call it would beep 3 times (beep (pause) beepbeep)... after about 2 hours he finally got it to work, but I have no idea what he did. I did have to read him my IMEI about a thousand times though, and he was digging pretty deep to find whatever he got to fix it.
Good luck. Since I had so may issues ATT gave me 25 off my next 2 bills, which was cool.
Should I return the TILT???
I was depending on this being an mp3 player/video player/phone/fun/office device. ALL IN ONE being key!!
This device has dissapointed me on the multimedia end for obvious reasons as I can't even drag and drop SD DIVX Shows!!
Is there a device that can do all this that I should get instead since I'm in my 30 days???? What would you do?
Thanks for any advice....

I am also in the same boat. I was expecting more from it when it came to playing movies and just overall performance. Don't know if I should return it to newegg and void the att contract. Or if it would be better to keep the contract, sell the phone on ebay, and use that money to buy a different phone.
return them
I would return them, and buy Iphones.
Iphones have by far the best web browsing available short of having a pc, which is what I was hoping for out of my tilt. Now that i know my web browsing issues are because htc didnt provide drivers, i feel like im missing a huge part of what this phone should have been and it is very disappointing.
Take It Back
return it...
RETURN IT
why? well the more HTC get returned etc the quicker they will pull their finger out and correct things and not allow such stupid mistakes
Just make damn sure that when you return it; you tell them WHY.
Hmm... The new 8gb Nokia N95 has just come out... Looks rather nice too...
All of you whom own a Tilt / Tytn II, T-mobile or other clone distributed by carriers should return this piece of ****ty hardware when not satisfied with the video performance.
Indeed, AT&T certainly would not have counted on such a return (and loss ) and will raise this towards HTC as loss of business.
Just return the ****ty thing and buy something that does what it's supposed to do.
And, for your own good, never buy anything coming from HTC. They're crooks, hypocrites and arrogant bastards who think that their customers are of a low enough IQ to be mocked in their face and still want to feed HTC money (this is exactly what comes out from their official response to the driver issue).

Yup. I bought my tilt last week so I still have two weeks to decide. I would return it today if i could figure out a replacement that does everything the Tilt does but better. I would personally rather have the Tilt than an Iphone even with the problems, and that nokia isn't doing it for me.
If you don't mind losing the internal GPS and the extra ram you could downgrade to the 8525 (Hermes). Nice thing is that there price has dropped considerably since the Tilt came out. For awhile there AT&T was selling them for $99...so you could probably find another site out there somewhere that would give it to you even better than this.
I'll trade someone my 8525 for their Kaiser
ha, I can't believe what im reading here! are u guys really that bitter. I honestly feel that even when (if) htc releases the fix, MOST of us will not notice a big difference in our daily use. I compare it to a bluetooth keyboard I purchased. before I bought it, I was going crazy, thinking I needed one, etc. once I got it, I don't think I've ever used it.
don't get me wrong, I would love the drivers, but other than that I love my phone. great internet, great gps, full keyboard, etc. there is honestly no other phone id rather have.
My Warranty ends tomorrow. I think im just going to keep the damn thing. Sure the video converting sucks. but, I got the Camera to work (thanks to Navadi), and I havnt watched a movie on my mobile in awhile. At least the reception is flawless. I have better reception than most of my friends and family. with the same provider, AT&T.
In my house NO ONE gets reception. and I can have a full conversation inside my house perfectly.
My brother who owns the Iphone. He has to walk outside in order to talk on his phone.
Oh and yeah the full keyboard is much better than the Iphone at Texting.
Oh and dont get me wrong I am disappointed with HTC with the way they are handling this situation. Atleast be helpful, rather than leaving us with a "F**k you, we got your money, you got what you paid for." what they did was false advertise.
The problem is, in the U.S. The phone is still better than majority of all the other phones out there. OBviously not in Europe. but here. Yeah.
I've had both the iPhone (Returned it) and now I have the TILT...i prefer the tilt.
I know the video situation sucks but I think the phone is still good overall
OK, out of strange series of events I ended up buying a tilt and a Tytn II online that should be here soon. I also purchased a 8GB card *drools* that I'm saving for when the lucky phone gets here.
First off I want to say I've had a 8525 (hermes) for a year or so and I wanted to upgrade I am very familar with having this PDA and it's plans but what I'm not used to is flashing (even though I did it once to upgrade my phone from wm5 to wm6) I would like to know which ROM are best at the moment or even if there is one and if it's even worth it to jump into 6.1 right now.
My second question would be 0_0 which phone do I keep?? they are both new and I plan on selling the other one. The tilt isn't unlocked but I don't see how that really matters since I'll be using att anyway. Also Black is my favorite color (which this tilt is). but I do like the extra camera that the tytn has (even though I probably won't be able to use it). So which one should I keep?? Which ROM should I install once I decide which one to keep??
does anyone have an idea??
Read all about the ROM's and then decide which best suits your needs.
The phones are basically the same, especially if you install a ROM.

I'm just putting this out there, but you know.... since you have a second one, people are looking for a donation tilt/tytn to work on for video drivers
I'd keep the Tilt. The units are basically exactly the same, and you can get more in return for the TYTN II since it has the front camera that you can't use. The only thing you can use the front camera for is a mirror, so unless you are a pretty vain person, I don't think it is worth it. If money isn't an object for you, I think the TYTN II is a little cooler looking, but it doesn't really make sense to spend the extra amount for it over the Tilt.
I'm looking to purchase a cheap Hermes if you are letting that go too.
Well yeah I am planning on selling it. I was planning on trying to sell it for 280 with the 2GB card how does that sound to you??
I currently have a Kaiser (HTC TyTnII on UK Orange) but have only just looked into the HTC Touch Diamond... and wow, does it look nice!
On the Orange website it's saying I can't upgrade my phone until May next year. eBay has the Diamond at around £350.
So, I guess I'm wondering if anyone can advise me. Are Orange likely to cut me a deal if I call them up? I guess I'm bound to a contract with them at present so I can't say I'm leaving them. Will it be easiest just to buy one from eBay?
Is it worth it? Is the Touch Pro out or coming out soon? Should I wait for that?

If you can't upgrade until May then you'll get little joy out of Orange I'm afraid. You have to be in the last three months of your contract before they'll let you upgrade. However, saying that you've got nothing to lose by calling them and you may be able to get a deal if you change your package to a more expensive one.
Cal them first before going the eBay route - as I said you've got nothing to lose.
Is it worth it? Hell, yeah! I was torn between the Diamond and waiting for the Pro, but impatience got the better of me and I plumped for the Diamond.
Even though I've only had it a day I can definitely say that it is fantastic! It's up to you if you want to wait for the Pro. I've come from a TyTN II myself and I sat back and really thought about it before going for the Diamond, and basically asked myself two questions:
1. How often did I use the keypad? Very rarely, maybe three times in the eight months that I owned the phone.
2. How much free space did I have on my 4Gb SD card? 2.5Gb, so for me having 4Gb of non-upgradable storage wasn't an issue.
The final thing that swung it for me was the size of the thing. It's good to have a PDA that's "phone sized", rather than being a huge brick.
Thats a good idea Have a word with Orange and twist there arms, see what you can do. I think my missus is due an Upgrade in August and im sure she will go for the Diamond (but as shes skint, I think shes gonna put it on eBay!!!!!!!)
I love my diamond and have used phones with hardware keyboards and like the post above says, how often do you really use it?
Software professionals and IT gurus would probably miss it as im sure using a hardware keyboard and using the Remote Desktop software is a great combination, but the VGA screen is excellent on the Diamond, its the best phone ive ever owned (and ive had quite a few...see my signature!)
Diamond = Thumbs up. Theres sooo much software and tweaks out at the moment with more software coming out just around the corner!
The futures bright, the futures...errr...Diamond? hehe!

Wow, how did you cope without the keypad? I think I probably use it 10-20 times a day and this is the main reason I'm holding back on upgrading I guess.
It looks a fantastic piece of kit... but I don't think I'd like using an onscreen keyboard
How long have you been with Orange?
If it's over a couple of years remind them how much money they have had off you and if that doesn't work tell them you will consider cancelling the contract. Generally they want to keep customers so will eventually give in.
Also, it's always good to ask to speak to their line manager if they can't help.
