Ok, so I have the tools to load some roms, and have tried a couple roms already, schap (sp?) and one other I can't remember the name of.
What I would like some advice on is this.
What is the Rom that speeds this phoe up the most.
Is there a list of cabs, both oem and aftermarket, that I can pick and choose from?
But most of all I want speed.I hate how slow this phone is.
Oh yes, also, my radio version is 1.27.12.11.
Should this be updated, or are different radio versions needed for different roms?
I have att phone......
I'm relatively new too. However, I think you could easily get ten different answers to the "Favorite ROM" question (or even the "fastest ROM"). I've now tried all the major ones and, to be honest, I'm not positive which is the fastest even for my particular uses. I prefer lighter ROMs because I install a fair amount of .cabs and that changes everything as far as performance. Currently using Dutty's V2 (medium). Also like Alex's ultraclean and Q's (will be flashing his latest tonight probably). Test them out and play with them to figure out what works for you and your needs. Do you want all the multimedia capabilities? Do you want a cube? Which standard apps (.pdf reader, task manager, etc.) do you want to use? A good start is the upgrading board and just reading the threads related to the newest ROM versions.
Yes, there may be a recommended radio for each specific ROM.
Great source of .cabs here - http://www.cinetsystems.com/xda/Kaiser Cab Collections/
BTW - someone recently did true performance specs of a bunch of the major ROMs. There is an excel file floating around. But, to be honest, it didn't mean much to me. How the ROM works "out of the box" and how it works once you've added your preferred programs may be different.
If I may make a friendly suggestion - READ, READ, READ. I've spent a lot of free time on here trying to learn and, as a result, have never been flamed. 99.9% of any questions you'll find have already been asked. There are some amazingly knowledgeable people on here that truly want to help. What they don't want is newbies (like me) to expect to be spoonfed when the answer to my question is out there and can be found as the result of a simple search. Use the Google search function in each board. It's your friend.
Good luck. It's an addiction....
Thanks for the help..... I'll just read read read..... forums are nothing new, so I can search search as well.....

Before I try the upgrade I just wanted to get a couple of clarifications. It is simply a "one click" process of running the executable? Of course I assume the phone needs to be connected.
I downloaded a file from the FTP site that I believe is the latest and greatest but I would really rather not fry my phone. <G>
Also, assuming everything goes okay will I loose any of my programs, and contacts?
From the folks that have had trouble, is there any kind of consensus of what cuased their problems? In other words should I avoid doing it if I've seen what with my 8125?
Thanks all,
Dave.......
Make absolutely sure you unlock your CID and sim using Lokiwiz before you upgrade to any ROM.
There's a couple of different ROMs out there as well, so make sure you read their respective threads and see what other people's experiences are with them. Summiter's ROMs are top notch, but make sure you grab the one with the features you are looking for.
In general, AKU2 ROMs are much more stable than your stock 8125's ROM. Most importantly, test all the important functionality (WiFi, Bluetooth, GPRS, etc.) before you start loading apps on your device.
Enjoy!

I'm thinking I might just ought to wait until the "official ROM" comes out. Seeing as how I have no idea what you mean by "unlocking your CID" means. <G>
I'm sure it's here in the threads but all this makes me a little nervous. I'm no stranger to all this tech stuff but should I fry my phone it would be hard to justify to the wife that I need to spend $500.00 on another one.
Absolutely. If you don't feel comfortable with the process, then it's best to wait until an official update is released so that you can go right back to the store and get a replacement if something goes wrong.
I just upgraded my 8125 and I don't know what CID means nor did I unlocc it. Its was very simple, just a few cliccs (I think about 4). It only took about 5mins and wow so many more features and better stability then how I recieve my 8125. I used one of the official Roms myself.
Hey I am about to do the update myself. I was wondering if someone could answer a few questions for me.
1.) I see it says when you do the update all the programs need to be reinstalled. Does that mean even the programs that originally came with the phone? Like the calc, and excel? Or just the programs that you installed on your own.
2.) I am mainly interested in the overclocking, and having push email work, and stereo bluetooth. Which rom should i use? there are so many out there now, it can get a bit confusing, and i dont want to use the wrong one. Is there a place you can go to look at the features of each one?
3.) what is the best push email client to use? i am using express mail now, but i am not liking it at all.
Thanks in advance i am loving this forum, and i hope to get my phone up and running soone
1. No. Everything you started with should be there again. Just updated software.
2. As far as OC and Stereo BT. The are specificied on the installer files. Not sure about the Push Email.
3. Haven't used this feature yet.
I did the AKU2 upgrade ROM for the 8125 and I do not see what all the new features are.
Can someone delineate all of the upgraded features for me?
I do notice the new screen for the Connection Manager, but all of the choices seem to be the same.
Thanks

I saw a new screen when just doing the rom. I have no idea what the Extended Rom thing does. I would like to know aswell

The basic 2.17 ROM is just a simple AKU 2 ROM customized for Cingular users. Think of an AKU as a service pack. Microsoft updated some core OS files, and in the case of AKU 2 also included Direct Push and the remote wipe features. Cingular has been dragging their feet in getting an AKU 2 ROM out, hence the homegrown ROMs available here.
The other 2.17 ROMs are built on the basic version, but have additional features as indicated in the file name.
CF2 is Compact Framework 2 and is essentially some .Net components shrunk for mobile devices. Some applications require CF2. CF1 was already included in WIndows Mobile 5, I added CF2 so folks wouldn't need to install it into the limited program storage space.
Themes and ringers are obvious - I added more of them.
A2DP/AVRCP is stereo over Bluetooth, and remote control over Bluetooth. It's used for wireless stereo headphones.
OmapClock is a CPU overclocking utility that allows for specifying a higher or lower clock speed for the CPU. It can help in situations where an application requires more horespower. I added shortcut links with 3 common clock speeds to make overclocking easier. The shortcuts can be assigned to hardware buttons.
Hope this helps.
Hi, still trying to decide which ROM to flash, but...
Will the programs originally installed on the device eg. mobile office, remain on the device or will they be removed?
It depends on what the new ROM has in it. Most of the ROMS I've seen have mobile office plus a lot of other great apps.
Also, once you flash, you loose all of your personal files, I always keep them on the SD Card.
Before anyone else may tell this to you...
DON'T DARE TO FLASH YOUR DEVICE!!!!
Reading your doubt, it's clear you haven't read any piece of informations written on this forum and it's clear you'll end up bricking your device.
I'm writing this to you cause as you can see from my posts number I'm a newbie too... but reading-reading and reading again I succeed to flash my 2 htc device whitout the need to ask anything... everything is just explained.
But you need to follow word by word what is written and, let me say that, you havent read a lot, dont you???
BTW, to be more usefull, flashing your device will erase everything (OS included) on it and then install newer versions of originally shipped programs and many other goodies (if you are upgrading, of course... and depending on the ROM you choose). (Extended-ROM is a discussion apart ... again: read&read&read!)

Thanks for your concern.
I must say though, that I am reading everything I come across.
I haven't as of yet decided which ROM I will use, but I'm not stupid. I won't flash until I'm confident I have learned enough to do so, and asking questions helps you learn.
get a list of things which you want in your rom, pick the one which meets most of them or the most important ones.
faria, molski and ppctuning seem to have the best roms. some programs are not yet fully working on wm6 (spb time is one example i use a lot), the (now quite old) 2.3 aku are the fastest roms. then wm6. then aku 3+
faria has a lot of apps in the rom so if you use those, you can save a lot of space for installing other stuff (games etc) which are less commonly used by others.
YMMV. this is just what i have found by trying nearly 20 different roms, i don't use my phone for much so most of the stuff in roms i don't use, i just use the fastest rom, which for me is the ppctuning superrom1.1

Thanks, now I know what I'm looking for I can look in the right places.
Dear people, I have been reading the posts about the problems with new installed cooked roms, and its hard to wade through the clutter and confusion.
So here my humble suggestions, in the hope the reports about the roms will be a bit more reliable and readable.
First you must understand, that your new cooked rom makes your phone a totally different machine as the original one.
You should ASSUME, that its NOT compatible with any software you used before. Most software and add-ons are made for the original roms and NOT for your newly installed cooked rom. (Unless stated otherwise by the add-on maker)
New cooked roms ARE DIFFERENT, WORK DIFFERENT.
Although the chefs (people who cook new roms) do their best to provide you with a perfect rom, it most likely will contain bugs and incompatibilties of some sort.
They, and potential users, need to know those bugs (and possible workarounds).
BUT
If you installed 3rd party software (including graphical stuff), or used programs to restore settings and data, you MAY have installed or restored incompatible stuff.
And this may cause an otherwise good working cooked rom to show "bugs", but are in fact incompatibilities.
SO
READ the instructions of the chef carefully.
DON'T install or change anything on your freshly installed cooked rom, and TEST ALL the functionality and programs supplied on the rom, WITHOUT restoring anything, not even your contacts (but add a few manually). Don't take this lightly. This IS THE ONLY WAY to see if your cooked rom works correctly.
If you notice any bugs during this stage, try to find if there are similar bugs reported in the thread about the cooked rom. If not describe as good as you can, what you were doing that led to the bug, and report. You could include your current radio version and original rom version. And tell you didn't install anything. If you find a similar bug in the thread, confirm you have the same (and quote the other report), adding more RELEVANT information if you have.
Then, one by one, do the things you would like to do.
ONE by ONE.
After every action you take that changes the content of your phone, TEST the functionality of the phone. Again, don't take this lightly. Some programs or add-ons may affect the working of the phone in other areas as they would on an other rom.
If you find bugs after "changing the content", and this inlcudes programs contacts etc, see if similar bugs have been reported. If not describe as good as you can, what you were doing that led to the bug, and report. You could include your current radio version and original rom version. And tell you what you installed or changed, also what you already had changed before this current change, so ALL programs you have installed and changes you have made). If you find a similar bug in the thread, confirm you have the same (and quote the other report), adding more RELEVANT information if you have.
IN ALL CASES, report the version of the cooked rom you are using. (The threads start in most cases with version x.xx but are changed during the development to x.yy, so a version number makes it easier for people who are wading through the hundreds of posts)
Maybe chefs could start a new thread for every version the put online? The pages about your previous release under your new one are irrelevant, and where to start reading about the latest? Makes things easier to read and understand!!
Thanks and happy flashing!

a cooked ROM does not nessasarily make a big difference and 99% of the time it will not be a TOTAL change like you have stated and will generaly be very similar to a previous rom apart from a few tweaks and updated software, tho it does vary. 3rd party programs should work on any rom if its compatible with the device and o/s unless a ROM is deffective. However installing backups can cause problems so should be avoided if possible.
the only time it will vary to a large degree is when going from O/S versions i.e WindowsMobile 6.1 to WindowsMobile 6.5

yes this is a great idea IF your having problems however I would only do this if I was having a problem no one else had yet reported. otherwise if a rom is stable just install away.
im with Gede on this
this is how i work:
install rom, run for a day as is, nothing else added. test as many things as i can including any of my own little tweaks i make after a new rom
then day by day (ie 1 app per day) i add in my 3rd party software, if i come across a problem, i uninstall the last app and see if the problem is still there, invariably it isnt and might just need a fresh install of the latest version to overcome the problem
yes it can take a week or more to go through this process but its the only way to ensure you are able to install all or most of your apps and have a device that functions well
also, i would say that most of the new cooked roms are really quite removed from the tock rom as they are tweaked with all sorts of oem cabs from different rom versions, whether these are just dfferent area roms, different versions of rom or as is the case more and more, oem apps from roms for different devices
i think the main point to remember in all this is that the cooks, cook the roms for themselves, they choose to share with the community... just because it dont work for you or doesnt meet your need... that doesnt mean the rom is buggy nor does it mean the cook owes you any fix or improvement
its really piddling me off to see how many people come to these forums and DEMAND this that and the other from the chefs
i think we are privilidged and should be grateful to have people here that choose to share their work with us for free so that our devices can be better and more useful then they are off the shelf
iphone users dont have the choice
Hi all, new here and very interested in Kaiser customization and modding!
My very basic question is...what is really the BEST WinMo 6.5 ROM for the Kaiser? My model is the ATT Tilt...dont think that matters though.
I have installed a few different ROMs and while some of them are OK most have UI problems (weird side orientation, stretch icons, very unresponsive touch commands, etc...) and just dont seem to work "right" for lack of a better word.
Ive been searching for just the plain jane vanilla WinMo 6.5 ROM as I am looking to get just the basic OS and install the programs I want and need...not what someone else thinks is good. I cant seem to find one though...all the "vanilla" versions of ROMs Ive found seem to still have unnecessary programs (RAM cleaner, various themes, unresponsive programs, etc...) and aren't really "vanilla"...
Also, as a side question...when I was researching about flashing my phone a lot of people said to make sure to note my radio version and what not...except for each ROM Ive tried my radio information and everything else associated with it havent change...is this normal? I must admit that I currently do not use ATT and cant test the phones working status (got the phone via trade) and was wondering if the original radio version still the same, it should work no problem right?
Thanks to everyone that is willing to help a n00b!
Well, as far as BEST is concerned...there really is no best ROM out there...this question has been asked time and time again on more than likely everyone of these forums on XDA, and the answer is always the same. Keep flashing until you find one that YOU like and that suits YOUR everyday needs. I for example like the fully loaded STAXX STYLES WM 6.5.1 ROM...which you may end up hateing because of all the preinstalled stuff. Just flash a bunch of different ones until you find what you like.
And in regards to your radio question...some ROMs include an upgraded or different radio, and some do not. Most of the time the recommended radio ROM will be listed on the ROMs download thread. Different runs of the Kaiser require different radio ROMs in order for WiFi, GPS, GPRS and the camera to function. So basically, flash to a ROM that you wan't to try, and test it with the radio ROM that you already have installed. If everything functions correctly, there is no real reason to change it. If something does NOT function, try flashing to the radio ROM that the ROM cook reccomends...and if none is recommended simply use the latest one.
The best ROM is subjective and a personal opinion..
The best thing you can do is look @ popular threads and see what's peoples opinions, then flash, flash, flash till you find the ROM your happy to use for everyday purpose.
Just as we do with all best ROM threads, thread closed.
There needs to be a dummies guide to this. I can't make sense of it all. I find literally hundreds of ROMs and then find dozens of builds for each one. I can't take it anymore! All I want is something that removes the bloatware, runs faster than the stock Tilt 2 ROM, doesn't lose any capabilities such as keyboards, etc, lets SPB MS 3.5 run faster, and lets me tether.
Why don't the chef's at least provide a simple list of their ROMs and what they do, what works better and what doesn't work with that particular ROM? I've been digging through this site for two weeks now and I'm not even any closer to knowing what to flash now than when I started. I know from other searches that the Mods tend to close requests like this, but I'm really stumped and I really have tried. I'm not an idiot by any means. I do understand that these are being provided for free and that I should be appreciative....and I am. But it seems to me that even the devs themselves would benefit from this so they wouldn't duplicate each others work and would be able to better track what they are doing.
Anyways, any suggestions for the ROM to do what I want?

What you do is flash one and see if you like it. If not, it is quite simple to flash another.
Try the Titanium 2 Jun NRG ROM and see what you think. It has no Sense version at all, which increases the storage memory size.
http://www.fileserve.com/list/X9nQc65
EDIT: I am assuming that you have read the "Flashing for NOOB" and the "Hard SPL" threads, you need both to be able to flash a custom ROM.
I have pretty much tried all of the ROMs but I reallly like only 2 ROMs. The best one for me is Cell Evo V7 (23541) (the link to thread. I have just flashed Josh's ROM. n i havent had any problem yet. I use the Sense 2.1. (its in my sig) I think 2.5 is still very buggy. so that maybe somethin u may wanna try out. I think the evo one is the most stable! but this is all just my own opinion. u may or may not like them!
Thanks for the tips. I have read the pages you mentioned and I understand that flashing in itself is a simple process. But for me, it's not just the flashing. I have to flash, install SPB MS and all of my apps, setup my weather, my exchange server and sync my contacts, configure active-sync, apply all my tweaks and then the phone is ready to use. Then if I don't like a ROM because it is slow or buggy, I'll have to do it all again......
At least that's how I picture it. Now if you are telling me that I don't have to go through all that each time, then I'll be a happy camper, but I suspect I am right on this.
What is a "sense" version that you are referring to?
Also, if you could explain the difference between a light, full and normal build that would be nice.
And what the deal is with finding matching "radios" whatever that is about.
And what is a "manila"?
And the problem with keyboards???? Do most ROMS have trouble using the keyboard? What other issues might I encounter while trying to use the normal functions of the device?
There's a lot of jargon here and I just don't see a single place that explains it all.

Manilla = Sense. "Sense" is the name that HTC uses for their UI. There are two major versions, 2.1 and 2.5 (newest). There is also an older UI called TF3D (TouchFlo 3D).
Matching radios refers to flashing your radio with different firmware. The device has ROM versions, which is what everyone is referring to, and the Radio has a different version. Some people prefer a certain radio, some ROMs recommend a certain radio. I'm using NRG, and have never updated my radio version.
Keyboards. Most ROMS will not automatically map your keyboard (AT&T and T-Mobile have different mappings - the exception is a ROM built for a specific carrier). The reason is simple - the Chef doesn't know what carrier you are using! On the NRG ROMs, there is a tool included to "provision" your device for your carrier; this fixes the keyboard. Or you can do a search and find the right keyboard .cab file for your device.
- Light, medium, and full. I personally don't use these terms, but my definition would be as follows. Light is a ROM that has very little added functionality other than what Microsoft provided with the operating system. Full is a ROM (like NRG) that has lots of custom stuff baked into the ROM - extra utilities and etc., which are useful to you (in the Chef's opinion). A medium would be somewhere in between.
I would include the stock ROM as a "Full" ROM, except that in their case a lot of their software is "bloatware", which means stuff they added because they could, or they had some kind of deal with a particular company, etc. It is called "bloatware" because it seems to serve only the purpose of making the ROM harder to use and cluttering up the menu system with lots of useless stuff - bloated.
Are you a happier camper?

Umm, speaking personally, I'm not sure I want a "sexy" TP2!
Ah. That explains a lot. Thanks for the info. Maybe one day when I'm no longer a dummy I'll write a dummies guide. Until then, thanks for the tips.
Hi,
I had the same problem as you, I just wanted a stock rom without all the extra stuff that htc provides, I wanted to be simple, fast and stable, after flashing a lot of ROM I decided to take the problem in my own hands so I started learning how to cook my own ROM, you have a very good guide about how to do that here.
After reading and understanding this guide you can create your own ROMs just the way you like it.
Maybe just like me you will not succeed for the first time, but in the end you will have a ROM cooked by you and will suite all your needs.
Good luck!
