Sprite backup and hard reset - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I'm not using the original HTC rom.. if I backup with sprite and do a hard reset.. will I be able to restore using the backup I made?
I heard it will cause problems, if I restore. Is this true?

Yes, you can restore as long as it's back to the same ROM. However, if you made a BU just prior to HR, you could introduce the same problems back to your machine that you're trying to correct. If you have a BU when your device was clean, I'd use that instead.

hmm... so are you saying after I hard reset, I should install the ROM I am using now then restore?
I don't have any previous backups

When you hard reset, all you're doing is setting everything back to factory defaults. The ROM you currently have in your device will be the same one after HR. The problem with Sprite BU or any other BU program is,,,it backs up junk too. It's good to make a BU of your device when it's really working well, that way you'll have a known good place to start from. I recently went thru this. After HR, I restored using a BU I created just before HR, the problems I tried to cure with the HR returned after restoring. I ended up rebuilding from scratch.

I just wanted to know if the hard reset will fix the usb problem I have now.. so if it doesn't I'd rather be in the state I have now.. so.. basically I'm just using this as a test.

Yes it will backup everything.

I use Sprite BU when I test out a new ROM. Since I do this frequently and I need my phone for work, I also needed a way to restore my phone to the last good working condition quickly and reliably.
Sprite was my choice because it was already on my first AT&T ROM. Since then I spent the cash and bought the full version. I find it to be snappier when restoring, but that probably has to more to do with the filesystem than anything else.

Yes, it doesn't change anything rom wise.
What I'm wondering is how to backup and restore wifi password and settings / email acct's after updating the rom..this is the biggest thing for me.

Whenever I restore from a BU, it re-establishes my passwords, at least in BBC. I didn't test my wifi connections before I rebuilt my device last.

Hi,
I'm also on the way to flash the ROM, but I've been putting it off for some time now because of data backup. I do not worry about contacts (Outlook sync), but I would REALLY like to be sure I will not have to reinstall TomTom and NavmanST navigation software together with all the settings (user POI I added myself), sms, MMS etc.
If I understand correctly, doing a backup (Spb, Sprite etc.) before flashing will do me no good, so is there really no way to keep (some of) the installed software in some way?
Any help appreciated...

If I were you I would run two backups; one before and one after the update. And use more than just one backup software, if possible.

UPGRADING PDA2K..CAN BACKUP DATA BE RESTORED?

HI,
I HAVE A PRESENT ROM VERSION: 1.22.00WWE FOR MY PDA2K..
AND AM GOING TO UPGRADE THE WHOLE PHONE WITH 1.40WWE...
I HAVE TAKEN A COMPLETE BACK UP ON MY SD CARD(XBACKUP). MY ONLY DOUBT IS ONCE I DO THE UPGRADE..CAN I RESTORE MY BACKED DATA FROM XBACKUP OR NOT? PLS HELP..IF NOT I HAVE A LONG PROCESS TO GO BY BACKING UP EVERYSINGLE BIT SEPERATELY.
REGARDS
FYI, based on what I have experience with the 1.40.00WWE ROM, if using xBackup, the data can be restored completely, HOWEVER, for some strange reason, the camera will not work. I did this upgrade sometime back and and had to re-install every application I had once the flash was complete just to get the camera to work.

Same experience
I had the exact same experience with my PDA2K. Everything restores and works great, except the camera. It gives an error when you start it. Since I never use the camera, I just left it as-is so I have no camera.
Restoring from a backup after a ROM upgrade is possible, however it is highly NOT recommended.
I have recently been successful in using Sprite Backup to perform a complete backup of all applications without any camera issues. This seems like the safest method to go following a hard reset.
Hope this helps.

HELP . I was updating the ROM of my QTEK 9090 and during the procedure the SYSTEM of CLIENT froze and I had to interrupt the updating.
Now I have on the screen of the QTEK a "USB - V2. 07" line and the QTEK doesn't react to any imput.
I tried also the soft reset and the hard reset (soft reset + ON/OFF button ?)
What can I do?
i actually just recently tried to restore my device after doing an EXT ROM upgrade and in brought my EXT ROM back to the original one that i had before.....which if you think about it makes sense since your extended rom is within the windows file system if you restore from a back up it puts back whatever was in that file before....so, thats probably why some things won't work properly....i decided not to do the upgrade agian cuz i don't have the time to reinstall everything at the moment....cheers....
The SMS bug is caused by Sprite Backup. If you use an old version after a hard reset of the PPC, you will loose the SMS function.
Solution:
Get the latest Sprite Backup and backup using that and than hard reset the PCC, upgrade the ROM en restore all data.
But I guess it is too late now...

Tilt keeps freezing on green windows moblile screen

My phone keeps freezing on this green windows mobile screen, and no matter how many times i reset nothing happens. I have to do a hard reset in order to get the phone working again. It happens often whenever i turn the phone off and on or change out the battery. Any idea? I am running the stock ATT rom, without the added junk (after i do i reset and it starts installing the extra apps i soft reset the phone). I installed the stock kaiser htc home plug in and thats about it.
i thinks its time for a new rom.
to keep it simple and basic =

this happened to me just two days ago. phone froze up and wouldnt start. i had to do a hard reset.
hold both softkeys and use the stylus to reset the phone. (hole at the bottom of phone).
this will do a hard reset.
it sucks that you dont have a sprit back up of all your data. i have several checkpoints of my data. i suggest you do the same if you do decide to hard reset.

I do have backups, and it continues to happen. I finally just reinstalled all my apps today without restoring a backup to see if it helps but I doubt it.
Do you have HardSPL or have you changed your radio? Anything like that? Have you previously flashed other roms?
nope stock and stock. I did first notice this when I tried to use the kaiser tweak utility. but i have since never installed it
Did you upgrade from the original 1.57 at&t Rom to the recently released 1.62 at&t Rom?
If so are your restoring a backup from the 1.57 Rom onto the 1.62 Rom. That is a no-no....
Remove your SD card and do a soft reboot. If it still hangs, then it is a ROM issue. If it boots OK then there is a program on your SD card that the device is having problems with, in either linking to or opening.
Copy all the SD card files and programs on your PC. Format the SD card. Start installing the programs one at a time and see which program is the culprit. Remove it and all those that add to the problem.
If you were happy with the original ROM, then do not change to another.

Hey Kyphur.. good to see you here.. What else can you do to avoid keeping remnants of the previous ROM? How can you avoid restoring a back-up?.

That's a loaded question. Personally I have the cab files for all of my programs on my storage card. I've consolidated some useful programs into a single cab and modified most cabs to install into a cleaner start menu structure.
Then I use KaiserTweak to set the few remaining Reg settings that I don't have already set in my cooked Rom.
My today plugins (PocketBreeze, PocketWeather & iLauncher) all have import/export functions so I use that so I don't have to reconfigure them every time.
Finally I have an Exchange Server account for my contacts and e-mails.

question on spirit backup

I have a tilt with the built-in spirit backup. I tried to use it but when I did the restore after updating the rom, alot of the programs wasn't restored properly or registry info was changed back to befault. I thought Spirit was supposed to restore everything after a hardrest or a rom upgrade? Did I do it wrong or something? Because of this, my computers all want to resync all the contacts and everything all over again, which is a pain as it takes hours to resync(thats another issue, but not related to this)
Hard-reset. Yes.
Rom upgrade. No.
And the built-in sprite backup was a trial. Did you buy it? If not you're screwed. Sorry man.
Sprite is retarded in a lot of ways. You should start using PIMBackup and -UC-.
Kraize
I used the one that came with the Tilt. Ok, so what I seen already, I got screwed. What program is good to do a complete backup, where I won't need to resync(where it thinks its a whole new phone) with my activesync after the restore?

The full version of Sprite is by far the best backup utility out there. SPB Back Up would come in a close second.
Sprite (full version) has an option for retoring to an "upgraded" rom. But my opinion is, if I change the rom all together (not just a hard reset) I am manually loading all my programs.
Test both extensively before purchase.
spirit backup says i don't have enough memory on my card but i have almost a gig empty. this just started. please help
by the way, this happens when i try to backup . thanks

ROM update -> Format?

If i update to the latest ROM (1.93), will i then lose all my data and settings? I have tweaked the phone a lil with advanced config. And added a few programs, and some are on internal storage and others on the phone itself. Im only going to update if it changes NOTHING but the updated stuff. I want to keep my tweaks, settings, programs, EXACTLY as it is. If thats not possible, then the update system sucks imo. Ill leave it as it is, cuz it took too much time tweaking every setting to suit me in the first place.
Ive recently updated my phone to the 1.93 WWE rom and it will remove all your settings from your device.
Your 4gb internal storage will be untouched (provided you follow the instructions and format your phones memory only and not the internal storage) youll be fine.
I found that programs like the Diamond Tweaker help getting the Diamond back to how I had it, altho I did do a Sprite backup, which restored all my texts and contacts, phew, so thats what was important to me. (There are options in the Sprite Backup software to backup only certain things on your phone so you can pick and choose what you like)
1.93 does have a significant speed improvement and im very happy i did upgrade (just gotta get rid of the email notification on the touchflo3D screen as it didnt back these up correctly as it says i have emails when the account isnt there)
But thats not a major issue and i haven't really looked indepth for a fix for that (im sure there is one, thats the beauty of the Diamond, there's usually a fix...somewhere!)
hehe!
If your not happy with having to restore you phone back to how you have it I dont blame you for leaving it as it is. Good luck with whatever you decide!
use sprite backup and restore using upgrade mode (level 1) all your apps/settings/preferences/pim etc will remain so long as your device doesnt change.

Nice one! Thanks for that. Will remember that for the next time I flash my Diamond.
You do have to watch out if you have the Call History tab add on for Touchflow that I found in the Diamond Forum as there are 2 different versions one for 1.37 roms and another for 1.93. I did try using the Sprite Backup software which restored everything but my clock was going mental.
Hard Reset the phone and then just restored my contacts and everthing's fine now. I will stress thats an add on problem and not a Sprite Backup issue.
Thanks for the heads up darthblane2k
im not sure if its a special version of sprite - but its certainly the one on the HTC e-club website.
A level 1 restore is if you are upgrading the ROM on the same device
A Level 2 restore is if you are upgrading the ROM on another diamond device
A Level 3 restore is if you are changing to another model device and only want basic info, eg PIM and stuff
Thank you all for your help. So what i have to do now is, download sprite backup from e-club? Back everything up, and then update to ROM 1.93 and then restore level 1, right?

Yes, you restore in ROM Upgrade mode. Think you have to change a setting in Sprite restore options to set it to level 1. Also you have the option to restore databases (eg emails contacts, calendar etc)
Thanks, im gonna try that now. But i dont seem to be able to find Sprite Backup anywhere on e-club. Can you tell me where i find the app? Also, where do i get Net framework 3.5 from?
Alright i found the CAB file for NET Framework 3.5 but when i run it on my phone it says it cant install right away. Anyone know why?
Nevermind. I dont feel like relying on Sprite to backup everything. And i dont feel like copying over all my files etc, to internal storage. Too annoying. Thanks anyway. Wish they made it easier.

Sprite Backup software-Good software

Usually I am writing about some PDA problem that I need the experienced users here to bail me out with.
Today I am writing about a positive review. I just loaded Sprite Backup software, that came with my TouchPro. I wasn't sure it would be worthwhile, but it works very well. It does a full backup of EVERYTHING on your PDA either onto your PC or onto the microSD card. Three times in the past three years, my PDAs would suddenly hard reset themselves while I was traveling overseas. So this feature is awesome.
With the option to backup to the microSD, the backup file, which is an .exe file can be run right after a hard reset to bring the PDA back exactly where it was before the hard reset. Wow!
I haven't used the recovery yet, but the backup process is simple, quick and easy. If recovery works as well, it makes this a "must have" app.
I feel SPB Backup much better and stable. Read my backing up pocket pc guide.
Regards,
Carty..
I agree that Spb is the better program. I ran both Sprite (came with Fuze) and Spb. Sbp was much faster and easier to use.
However, Sprite is a no cost extra for those who have the new Touch Pro.
Sprite versus SPB Backup
Carty,
Thanks for the added opinion. SPB does sound pretty good. How much does it cost?
So far Sprite seems to work well and is fairly quick, especially if I do not backup my photos and mp3's. Since these are on my microSD card, that hasn't been necessary anyway.
Have you ever done a restore with Sprite? How did that work out? Was it a seamless/painless restore back to the original state before hard reset?
How does the Sprite restore compare to the SPB restore?
Im planning to Flash a New rom onto my Fuze, and i noticed that it has included the Sprite Backup, that i can use.
I was thinking of using PIM Backup, instead of Sprite.
What are u guys thoughts on PIM Backup? has anyone used it after flashing a new rom?
If i use the Sprite Backup, that is included with my fuze, and i back up everything onto my MicroSD card/Computer...If the Rom that i install does NOT have Sprite Backup installed...can i still use the .exe backup file from the sprite program? Or would u have to install Sprite Backup onto the NEW ROM, for it to be able to restore my backup?

Depends which ROM you intend to flash sir?
I would have to agree with Mrvanx that it depends on which rom you started with and which you are flashing to.
Sprite backs up EVERYTHING, so if you do a restore, I think it also restores EVERYTHING. Not certain if this is true or if you can do a selective restore.
However, you might wind up restoring files or settings that may be incompatible with the new rom. Check Sprite's website also as it may answer this.

ohhh, ok well i planning on flashing NATF's ROM,
but if it might cause any trouble, then i think ill just use PIM backup...that would work with any ROM right?
Sprite Back-up gets my vote
While I'm an a die hard proponent of Sprite Mobile. It does comes with it's on limitations. Only this time the limiting factor is you. It does allow restore and back-up of specific of only portions of the ROM or device. It also has a ROM-upgrade restore feature. So without getting supper deep. If you are going to upgrade the ROM and only are interested in PIM information, I would suggest PIM backup. I have not used SPB much not sure that I have used it to restore ever. But Have used sprite since 1996.
i've used sprite countless times for years, and have never had a problem with it. i tend to mess my phones up a lot, so its great to do a hard reset, and then throw on a backup that i know works right. i tend to backup right before i do something that will most likely crash it lol
is there a cab for sprite? I tried using the version i had with my touch pro but get an error when i try installing it to my fuze it tells me to upgrade to the proper rom. and since i am currently on Monx's ROM it doesn't have it installed by default
Hi Guys,
I was using Sprite Backup for a while as it came with the phone, it seemed fine but as I installed more software the more unreliable it got. The main problem was that it would go through the whole backup process and then right at the end (after 2 soft resets) would report that an error had occurred.
This got better when I upgraded to the latest version but then I noticed that when I did need to restore all my speed dials were messed up.
Checking the Sprite website it looks like they have addressed the speed dial issue in the very latest version 6.5.2.
Saying this I've been using SPB Backup and have no problems at all, even after a restore and it also only soft resets once.
Hope this helps,
D.
Help Please
I did a verry dumb thing today. I installed a program, can't remember what it was, a skin probably or some sort of settings program and my Touch PRO crashed. It stopped booting and was not comunicating with the pc. After a sotf reset it started and showed the home screen but without any of the buttons and the start text. it only showed the windows icon in the top left and the calendar and contacts on the bottom of the screen. The dumbest thing i did was to do a hard reset (i think) by pressing the d-pad and the volume down and after that, the reset button on the bottom of the phone and volume up after the message). This obviously reinstalled the os and deleted everything that was on the phone. So far so good, but i had some photos made a cuple of days ago. Is there any way to access the phone memory as a flash via usb of some sort in order to look into the file system with some recovery programs? PLEASE HELP ME. My mail adress is [email protected]. Thank you verry much.
Sprite Backup, cab file, backup errors
yes, I'm using Ruppenthals rom and wantd a way to restore as I now have the device and programs liek I ant them. I found an old version of sprite-5.1.0. Guess it shipped with thte TYTN - found it on wiik. It backeu up but said there were erors. There were 4 files it said could not be included. Does this mean that if I choose to restore the os will be corrupted. They were wierd file names like eT9Rudb and eT9Cdb.cdb . Is there any way to get the version of Sprite that came with this device back? Is there anywhere to get a sopy of SPB backup?
