Ok since no one really explained how the trick of turning off then turn on the device makes the camera faster under low light condition, here is the Instructions.
1. open the camera application
2.Turn off the device by pressing the power button.( do not close camera application)
3.while pointing at a low light object (it have to be low light, what i do is cover the camera with my palm, so no light can be detected by the camera), press the power button to turn on the device, u will notice incredibly more FPS when u shoot in low light condition with no lag at all!!
This is more useful for taking videos under low light condition..(not no light condition)
to make the video brighter, after the trick. set EV to 2.0, contrast to 1. white balance to night mode.
the slow camera can clearly fixed by a software patch...
tried all variations of this theme

now the delay is even worse than before, the seeker image is trailing way too much
my guess is HTC just settled for the lesser of two evils (ie 2 fps kind of, but nowhere near fully, synced or 10-15 fps not synced at all)

Faster fps are possible with this 'fix' because the CCD isn't trying to pull every last pixel from the shadows (which slows down frame rate). The exposure time is therefore less (you get a darker image) and the camera is then able to send information quicker to the graphics adapter which in turn can display a higher fps.
It appears through some bug, the camera thinks it is correctly exposing a scene, while it is actually under exposing.
This adds even more weight to the argument that it isn't the graphics adapter causing low fps rates on the camera, but rather the camera itself.

We'll not exactly. Nightmode is a software related thing where the fps is forced to slow down to allow more light onto the CMOS sensor(not CCD in this case ). Here the software is being fooled no the hardware, if you point the cam to a bright scene yo'd see it begins working as normal, this is because night mode disables. This is for sure a software problem and not dependant on the raphic drivers. SE phones and others offer a Nightmode which is manually activated, but HTC for some reason has made it auto activated.

I am having another annoyance with my Tilt. The camera is damn slow. First the on-screen rate is stop-motion like, then the auto focus button takes 2-3 seconds to focus, and finally the photo takes a few seconds more to capture. B that time, the photo opportunity is gone, or I just have a blurry picture.

I'm sure it's the new autofocus function that is responsible for the speed. It's not something you find in many cell phone cameras, and gives much better photos for many situations. But yes, the slow speed is a shame.

Honestly, after spending a few hours tinkering with this phone, the 8125 --> 8525 was a much larger, more needed upgrade. The 8525 did have some caveats, which I was hoping they would fix, but they seemed to just get worse. For example, screen rotation is simply slower on WM6 than it was on WM5. I want a PDA that has Windows capabilities, but without the hiccups that Mobile exhibits. I was hoping the 8925 would be the solution, but I guess I will have to wait another year for a true converged device. Such a shame that a very well made device has to be crippled by a poor operating system. Not saying it's horrific, but definitely could be a lot better.
i've notice the blurry thing...but once you get use to holding it steady the pics come out amazing.
One thing I have found that helps is to use the Camera button to take pictures - You can press the Camera button half way down and let it focus, then press it the rest of the way down to actually take the picture when you want to snap. Doesn't help the whole 'catch it right then' situation, but it does help some...
Thats one of the bugbears with this new phone is the time it takes to snap a pic I know its more a phone than a digital camera but why put a 3mpix camera in there if its not meant to at least equal old digital cameras (casio, olympus, fuji etc etc). I like the extra features of it but not at the expense of it taking 5-6 seconds for people or things to stand perfectly still in order to get that pic

My 2 megapixel SE K750i from YEARS ago (I had it two years ago as an import phone) had no issues with it's autofocus lens. It also took much better photos.
The camera app is pitifully slow. I've tried shooting a lower res or lower quality and that doesn't change the on-screen display, and yeah the autofocus is crazy slow. I guess we should look to HTC for advice, as it's their camera app.
Yah it's a bummer that it's not that fast, but the phone really is a powerhouse of applications. If this thing was running WM2003 on this processor it would be blindingly fast, but with any power loss, the data would be gone. So far speed is the price we pay to have a device that you can pull the battery out of and not lose any data... When I use my HP hx4700 VGA PPC running 2003, it still blows me away how fast they used to be before this new "persistant storage" feature. I don't know if this would help the camera specifically, but I wonder.
Well, it's damn annoying. I would rather the speed and flashlight than an autofocus lens or 3MP.

Agree completely, I had high hopes, the 3MP autofocus sure looked good on paper, but now I just miss the flashlight
i heard that it's because of the software, i think paul from modacco said that cameraware is much better (and i THINK he said that it was faster to take pictures).

As mentioned in another post. If you turn off the "shutter sound" it seems to respond faster. I've tested and it seems to work form me.
I have also noticed that when I push the OFF button and then turn it back on the camera is much much better.

I've tried all of the previously suggested options and the pics are still blurry.
I have a Nokia 6300 2MP camera phone and it's pics are sharper and better with no blurriness whatsoever.
Even the old Wizard I have is better
This isn't an issue of me having an unsteady hand either, I've been an amateur photographer for many years and have no probs using my old ancient SLRs or new DSLRs, even when snapping with a camera in each hand.

The lens protector on the battery cover may be scratched or worn (mine is). I get much clearer photos when I take the battery cover off. Other posts describe using certain polishes to restore a clear lens protector.
That's what I get for keeping the phone in my pocket.
I remember reading a post about the fps when taking video. I use the fix when taking regular pictures too, because it appears to speed up the viewfinder as well.
fix:
1. Cover the top half of the phone (where the lens is) with your hand, to decrease the light available.
2. Press the power button to put your device into sleep mode, or whatever it is that they call it.
3. Without moving your hand, press the power button again to wake up the device. This appears to cause the camera software to reinitialize with decreased light settings.
Yeah, it sucks, and yeah, I miss my Tytn camera and led light. Hope this helps!

There's three videos all were taken with my AT&T Tilt (Dutty's v3 ROM). Please note that videos are in reduced "youtube" quality, they are significantly better quality in the original file. If you want the originals, I'll upload them somewhere.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Theve videos WERE NOT posted to show or prove that AT&T doesn't need proper driver. I whole-heartedly believe that IT ABSOLUTELY MUST have drivers and I will fight alongside the community for their release till the end.
THese videos were made to show that with newest Nadavi's camera app Kaiser can take pretty damn good videos and pictures.
I'd also like to ask a question - if Kaiser can take such high-fps videos when there's a bright object in the center - perhaps we need to look further into the issue of how Kaiser's camera is focusing on dim objects. There was a thread somewhere about that.

fps on the screen was the same as the movie's. Not to say that i dont have extremely low fps sometimes. i can make a movie tomorrow with very low fps.... i'm just tring to get a vetter understanding of this

Guys, I didn't do anything. I installed the Nadavi's camera app and changed the settings a little bit. I decreased the brightness to -1.5, reduced sharpness... there's a thread in here somewhere that lists all the good specs for kaiser's camera.
The problem is that I do have the same exact problem you guys are seeing. For example, my office at work is poorly lit - it I point camera at the lamps - i got excellent fps. But when I point down, to say, my table, it reduced to about 2-5 fps. Point at my laptop - again high fps. I will post the video later.
What I'm trying to say is that there's more to this than the drivers, I feel. Why is Kaiser making excellent vids at night with few bright objects, and making horrible video with poorly lit office? As far as I can tell - there's one major difference. In first case we have no-light environment and few bright lights. In second case - whole environment is lit, but pooly, with no objects sticking out. Why is Kaiser trying to compensate in second case, and jsut makes a video in first case?

Thats pretty fast!! I have the app but when I record it drags everything. We should have a benchmark thread on all the big rom releases, and compare them with the app and with out, and on the OEM roms.

I usualy have 3-5FPS in video mode, but when I press the power button to get the device to the stand by mode, and wake ipt up after a few seconds the framerate increases to about 20FPS and my videos looks as good as the videos shown in the first post. Without this "trick" my videos are just crap

Could you please explain this a little more clearly?
Ok here's another video from same configuration. Notice the drastic change in FPS when brightness of the object in center changes. It seems that if u point to something bright then FPS goes up, even if its dark around it.
PS: could u elaborate on how u increase FPS by powering down/up the kaiser?

Wow this trick actually works. To clarify for those that don't understand: When your in Camera or Video Mode click the power button on your phone and let the phone be off(Standby) for a couple seconds; when you turn it back on by pressing the same button the FPS will increase to about 20FPS.
One problem I found out is that it does not adjust the brightness anymore so everything will sometimes look too dark (at least in my room it did)

It IS to do with the fact that HTC opted to have an automatically enabled 'Nightmode' when in low-light conditions. If you enable 'Nightmode' on your normal bog-standard video camera, you will get a low frame rate just the same.
HTC need to give users the option to manually select 'Nightmode' so we can then decide ourselves if we want low-framerate/high-lighting or vise-versa..
maybe in a patch or new ROM???

I completely agree. This is a very valid point. Whilst I agree that HTC misrepresented the graphics ability of this device and should be accountable for this, I am noticing an increasing trend to ascrbie most problems with the TyTN2 to the missing graphics drivers.
The danger of doing this is that investigation into other solutions will just tail off and this will go from being a developers forum to a consumers' one.
After all, if the slow IE scrolling had been written off as driver related, there wouldn't be an excellent cab floating out there that could fix it so easily!

this is coming from a photographer. Blurry objects are caused by moving objects in a low light environment. When trying to capture light in a room with poor lightning the camera shutter will stay open longer to capture enough lights for the exposure. This can be corrected by bumping up the ISO or apenture. Since this cannot be done by the camera on the Fuze you can always turn Flash on to compensate for the low light or resting your elbows on a desk for more steady position

I'm coming from devices like the Sanyo M1 (2MP Auto Focus, the best camera phone ever on Sprint), Mogul (2MP decent pictures) and Treo 800 (2MP, really nice pics). All I'm asking is for the blurry pics to be better. I took 20 pics yesterday and 18 of them were blurry. I've tried every resolution setting. Like I mentioned earlier it seems L 640 X 480 pictures seem to be better than the higher settings.
Buy SonyEricsson and you get a camera that can be actually used for something...
Mine takes pretty good pictures, do you hold the capture button to allow the auto focus to do its work and then take teh picture without having much movement. The movement is what i found causes the blurriness. I guess it autofocuses on a spot and then when you move it start refocusing but the picture takes anyway?
BTW my sports and burst mode arent working properly, camera freezes up and have to soft reset. Is the 3mp tweak for these modes to much for the CPU to process
Yes, I hold and press which autofocus then snaps. I understand it something in the picture is moving but every pic? That's not normal. I've been taking pictures with phones for years and never ran into an issue like this. Plus this is suppose to be a really advanced 3.2MP camera. Might have taken a step backwards with this one.
One thing I do is turn the brightness down as far as the camera will let me, this really isn't a brightness control but a shutter speed control, lowering the brightness raises the shutter speed, which allows for faster camera response.
I think the problem is probably mostly that the sensor used in our module has an imaging area of 3.61mm*2.72mm, 4.52mm diagonal.. take a look at the chart here for imaging sensor sizes: http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/Glossary/Camera_System/sensor_sizes_01.htm
Notice how the size of our sensor is below the bottom of the chart.. It's often said that a camera with superior MPixel count will lose to a camera with an inferior MPixel count and a superior sensor.. well, our sensor isn't big enough to be able to take really nice 3.2mpix photos.. without ideal conditions. Then there's that whole thing about using a CMOS sensor rather than a CCD sensor..
One thing I think the camera can do better is that it doesn't seem to be operating in progressive-scan mode.. there's noticable tearing all over the place..

You can remove the back cover of your phone and take a picture... it does make it better.

I think that is somewhat incorrect. For TYNT II and older phones, yes that would work, since it has a plastic cover over the camera. But for the touch pro and the diamond, it should make little to no difference. I've tried it, and I don't see much of a difference, since it's just a hole. Not covered with plastic or anything.
I had the blurry photos problem too. I just tried it and I haven't played with it enough to confirm this fixes the problem (it seems like it reduces the problem but doesn't eliminate it) but try this:
HKLM/Software/HTC/Camera/Captparam/
and set
CaptureTimer = 0 (old=5000)
tell me if you see a difference
Two more things to do - go into the camera advanced settings (in the camera itself) and turn off the click sounds and set the review time to no limit. With those two and the change above I think I have a working camera here...
have you done the "white balance" tweak in your settings? it completely gets rid of that yellow look when you take pics indoors. Also theres rumors saying that turning off the shutter sound increases the camera's quality but I cant prove that

I think what most people are looking for with regards to photos is not 100% 9mp quality from our phones. I mean, why can't a fix similar to the Tilt's be made?* All I want is a higher FPS in low light conditions.
*Where you can increase FPS (in low light) by running the camera, turning the phone off, covering the lens, then turning the phone back on...

I tried those tweaks with no success. Pics aren't as blurry but they are pretty crappy. I'm not saying I want 10MP clearity. I just want this camera to be compariable to the devices I previously owned (Sanyo M1 and Treo 800). Right now it's not. I'm going to exchange this device.
Errrr Sorry I stated the wrong registry key. Actually that one does not matter too much. UPDATED version:
1. Change registry key:
- HKLM\software\htc\camera\captparam\Capkeydelaytime = 10
2. Soft reset to activate the hack.
3. Set the capture key of the camera to hold & press.
To make a photo:
- Aim at subject.
- Hold your finger on the round big enter key and wait until the white "[" "]" go green. This might need a slight "touch".
- Shoot by pressing the round big enter key fully.
The problem you're going to run into is the size of the sensor on cell phones in general. You could have a 10mp cameraphone but if they keep the sensor the same size it is now the pix will continue to be crappy.
I will say that the pictures I've taken with my Fuze have been pretty good, and I have really bad shakes in my hands. The autofocus is a huge step forward imo.
Hey, I just got a short question:
I was playing around with the Front and BackCamera...
The backcamera needs a bright room to make suitable pictures, if it gets to dark it starts to 'lag' like hell. Hope you know what i mean ?!!
The frontcamera doesnt have such problems !! I can take pictures everywhere and the videopreview on the screen is perfectly smooth !
Who can explain me why this happens ? Is it a Softwareproblem or is it on the hardwareside? Maybe the software tries to brighten the previewimage and uses the hole cpupower??!?!

The back camera is a problem due to the aperture and the ammount of light that hits the lens, if you turn camera on then press power button "sleep" for 5 secs turn on it generally works, you may still need to keep the light from hitting the lens on the power button press depends on condition of light.

It's hard to say but could be hardware/driver related but never used a stock rom to comparatiize.

Your power button trick works the same with my stock ROM although after coming back from powersaving mode the screen is noticably darker (as are any photos taken in this state). From this I take it that the whole photo or video taking process (ie the end output) requires a combination of x light intensity over y time for each frame so if one is low, the other needs to be high to compensate. It's just the same with conventional camera shutter speeds.
It won't help eratical to resolve this issue but it's simply down to design. The reason why viewing the front camera vs the back camera results in a snappier display is because the front camera is a much lower resolution raw output and it taxes the cpu/connected hardware less.
Hello guys. I am new with my milestone here and I have an important question if you have some ideas about it. However my previous phone (google G1) had 3.2 mp camera built in, its photos were quite better than my milestone which has 5 MP with flash light! I am very disapointed with its camera performance. Is this something about software and development or something about its camera lens?
Its photos are full of gren and noise in it and deffintly doesnt seem to be a 5 mpx.

Try charge your battery full if using flash.

same here, I came from X10i (best in camera) and really i feel the difference

It has nothing to do with battery because photos are bad even in full daylight! I hope this is something about firmware and can be fixed with some new software , Unless i will sell this phone.
I have also not'ced that camera flash light of this phone is not working proper when battery goes lower than 30-40 and its a shame when its night time your battery has to be higher than 50 if you want to use flash light.. But there is something weird with this because of this flash light brightes and shines so strong even battery goes low when you half press shutter button for the auto focus. then when you press for taking the photo then it wont flashes up like before. REALLY WEIRD.. I am gonna sell this odd phone. Unless those stupid mistakes wont be fixed by 2.2 upgrade. hopefully soon..
Can I ask to poeple who upgraded their droid to 2.2 is there any difference at camera performance on your droid after update ??
To be honest there is not a difference in camera performance. That all varies between the lighting and zoom level of the camera. I have noticed the grain side of the photos, however I have had some great clear photos taken with the phone as well. The video quality IMO is superb for the phone. Even before the 2.2 update I did, the pictures turned out great despite some showing a little bit of grain.
The megapixel number means nothing, and actually for a given physical sensor size (IE the ones that fit in phones) a higher MP number will mean ****tier pictures.
The performance is just how it's going to be.
I use 360 Camera Pro with low ISO Speed (100) and High IS Sensitivity. My photos come out looking like this: http://i.imgur.com/U9PAx.jpg

well I tried to take the same photos with both stock camera program and camera 360 program, and my results were not far different from eachother but 360 photos were a bit better. Camera 360 photos were about 3-4 MB, but droids itself photos were 1 MB. I can say the MB difference didnt reflect the picture quality. they were almost same quality. so no need to use 3 times more space for ordinary photos.
I changed my camera application.
I now use the app: Pro Zoom Camera 5X
And that worked for me.
It takes better pictures.
Dont know all the reasons.
But 1 major reason for me is,
With the original, you half press the camera key to focus, then full press to take the picture.
This creates movement when taking the picture.
With the app i'm using,
you press full ones, it then focuses and takes the picture.
but you can also use the volume button, which is an easier key to press full.
or you can just tap the screen.
For me it made a huge difference.
Though,.. still not as good as we want it to be

I am not sure if the only problem was half shutter vibration on the photo problem. it seems more than that. To me It can be fixed with some software improvments but im not sure how much can it be good with new software.. Does anyone know which brand or what kind of lenses does motorola uses for milestone?
