Got to the bottom of Wifi problems... Yep, Definitely - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Guys,
I don't know if this is actually a cure yet, but it seems to have worked on my first attempt.
First the background...
When I first got my Kaiser (UK Orange Tytn II) I was at work, I quickly enabled the wifi and all was well. When I got back home later that day I really struggled to get a connection to my access point at home. I connect to a Cisco aironet in both locations (I know there is a post about cisco extensions but I know that is not my problem as I can and have connected to both APs on at least one occasion with no problem).
After deleting wireless settings and a few soft resets I was able to connect at home. I managed to use that wifi connection all night without a problem. Getting back into the office the next day resulted in the same problems connecting to the office access point.
The AP is visible and is 'Available' but doesn't connect automatically. I tried to establish the connection manually, the phone shows the AP as 'Connecting' but shortly after goes back to 'Available'.
I've tried flashing different roms and radios but to no avail.
Last night I got to thinking that I generally connect to my AP, browse the web, sync mail etc, but I don't switch off the wifi when I am finished. I just let the phone go into standby as that shuts the wifi off anyway. So to try something different last night, I disabled wifi once I had finished.
This morning, when I got into the office, I enabled wifi and for the first time it connected immediately and I'm browsing on it just fine. This leads me to believe that there is a problem when the wifi is enabled and the phone is is standby mode for a considerable length of time and then is woken up in a totally different location.
I'll test again tonight by disabling the wifi before I leave the office and hopefully I'll get an instant connection when I get home.
Any thoughts?

I get the same thing for work and cannt connect even though it says available, and then connected.
Tried your approach but didnt work for me.

Of course that might be due to any number of factors. Have you ever been able to connect at your office?

i've had issues with my orange (uk) tytnII actually wanting to make a GPRS connection whilst connected to WiFi when i try and go online.
I connect at work using a program called Odyssey and eventually got that working yesterday, but had to turn off most other connectivity before it'd actually use the WiFi.
then I was at a pub later on with a free wifi hot spot, but that wouldn't connect despite it being 'available'

YAY!
Well...
I retested my theory. Disabled the wireless before I left the office. Got home, enabled it and I connected with no issues.
So there is a problem with having the wifi on when the phone goes into standby and it then waking up in a totally different location.
I wonder if WM6.1 addresses this. I hope so because although I have a work around, its still a pain in the a$$

I had similar problems on my Wizard... never had anything like that on my Kaiser.

No problems with it.. no missed calls, calls come through fine when I'm on HSDPA.. no wifi problems so far.

Thanks, I might give that a go when I get a chance.

My problem is similiar. If I connect to a certain access point, it will stop working after a minute or so and then not be able connect to that access point or any other one, they are just listed as available. Strange...

Firstly set your wifi power to max.
Secondly, my orange Tytn2 (now dutty v3'd) has never had that problem.
I leave navizon on a lot of the time and thus enter and leave wifi zones frequently with wifi on and my device connects fine to the regular ones I use.

Wi-fi connection
Hi unwired,
I've been surfing this site, but unable to find an answer yet, a newbie that I am. Is there a way to define one network as default? Anytime I want to connect, I have to do it manually, and define settins, rather than just switch it on, connect automatically and fire away. This is how it works on my laptop, or I have to high expectations from the Kaiser?
Thanks in advance.

This is nothing to do with power settings, or at least not for me or several other people I have spoken to. Its generally not a problem when the wifi is on, its after the device has gone into suspend.
I'll bet my bottom dollar that if I set the reg hack so the wifi is always on I wont have this problem but I can't deal with the battery drain.
Just this morning I was connected to my office wifi, went for lunch without switching off the wifi first and when I got back I was longer able to connect to the same access point.
I then deleted the settings for the access point, soft reset and I'm connected again (even if I switch to low power).
To say that this pi$$es me off is an understatement, what kind of wireless device cant handle waking up in a different location to the one it went to sleep in!?

I have had similar problems. I get disco'ed from my AP at home and it won't let me re-connect. Jut keeps asking for the WPA2 key.
I use the same remedy as you. Turn off Wifi Before walking out of range. No amount of Softreset's fix it for me.
Although, some ROM's work better than others. ie Alex's WM6 ROM would not connect at all, the ROM / Radio in my sig are perfect so far.
P.S. This might also be tied to my router, cause a router reset fixes it for me. But i doubt work will let you try that

Yeah I'm really hoping that this is fixed in WM6.1 which, if your experience is anything to go by, might well be the case. I really wanted to wait for the official 6.1, but I feel a flash of Duttys 6.1 coming on real soon.

Problems with WiFi access on Helmi

I SIM unlocked to use T-Mobile with my SX66 to do a comparison with my Wizard to see how this BA performs: I cant figure out if this is an older unit (05 versus 06??) or a newer one (400 MHz rather than 190 and a 2 megaixel camera on the camera units rather than a 1.3???) and installed Helmi, which has lots of features I don't need but which seems to be the only WM6 ROM around for this unit (?).
Installation went fine and without a hitch but now on boot up, I don't get a splash screen of whatever type: I get the initial bootloader screen, which is curious! But seems to be correct. However on that screen on soft reset, it shows the OS correctly but with a R 1.02.10 and a G of 1337.35. What is unusual is that on hard reset it shows both these settings as empty. Only on soft reset does it show the radio etc.
Slightly more worryingly (as I would like to test out VoIP on this unit) this BA wont connect to the Internet. WLAN is off by default and turning it on just flashes up a list of local WiFi LANs: It wont actually connect to any of them. it does take you through the steps and asks all the seemingly obvious questions (Is this the Internet or a work VPN? WHY SHOULD YOU CARE??) and at the end of the process, it just doesn't connect. Even more annoyingly, when it doesnt connect, it turns WLAN off again, so you don't really know when it did this (or, of course, why). It takes you through all the steps and then gives you the Configure Wireless Networks screen which shows all local networks which you KNOW to be available as "unavailable".
Is this a known problem with Helmi or does anyone recognise what I am doing wrong please?
I had the same problem with my BLUEANGEL (MDA III). The Upgrade to WM6 was totally ok. Everything is working, except the WLAN. Did you tried this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=343862
No, it just keeps disconnecting (things getting worse)

The WLAN started trying to connect as I describe but now just doesn't even turn on in Comm Mgr.
Also tried upgrading to xplode but BA loses communication during the upgrade process. (Attempted to ask Xplode himself on that thread and will see if he has any idea)
i donno if this helps but wad i did was i turned on bluetooth. thn i turned on wifi.
it detected my wifi router entered my wep key thn logged on to internet. thn i switched off my bluetooth. i tried surfing and was ok.
i switched off wifi waited awhile thn turn on wifi.. it works flawlessly..for now

Yes, although bluetooth was already working, this seems to do something: I dont know what it is but it appears to be some combination of turning off and turning on again all sorts of things in CommMgr. Now it is working.
I wonder how long it will continue to work? It certainly doesnt let me open VoIP settings while connected. I still get a fatal exception when I try to do so and even though I have inputted all my VoIP settings, VoIP still doesnt work.
Still trying to figure out whether Xplode knows what is causing my failure to communicate WHILE upgrading from Helmi to Xplode.

Often when I try to connect using IE and it says it isn't connected, it IS. I often get the message that I cant connect with the usual reference to completely useless settings pages or an offer to dismiss and give up on the internet connection.
But if I ignore it, I find that I mysteriously AM connected.

WiFi Problem: Defect or just TILT software

Hey guys, yes I've searched and read almost every post about Wifi and was wondering to see how many people are able to get Wifi connected or is my unit just defective. I've tried all tips people were giving and still no luck. Most of the time it'll be able to see what wireless router is available but when I try to connect it'll show unavailable. First I thought it was my router acting all weird, it's a Zoom ADSL by the way, but sometime I'll be out and locate an open unsecured router and it'll show the same thing when I try to connect. After a couple of second it'll show available again and same thing try to connect and becomes unavailable. Once in a blue moon it'll connect but once I turn it off and try the connection again it'll say unavailable. Is there something I'm doing wrong with my setting or is it just a defective Wifi. Like I said in the DOA thread at home I don't get 3G so Wifi would be a much better option but this bug here is really starting to frustrate me. All my other Wifi product works cept for this TILT. I use to have the stock TILT 1.57 - 12.17 rom and radio and now using the DUTTY touchFlo Beta2. Thanx for any help and I know this is probably one of many Wifi thread but I just wanted to get this frustration off my chest.

Froyo + WiFi = disabled connections

So ever since I've gotten my Nexus One I've been noticing it drops out of a WiFi way too often. It does it both at home and at work on Wireless routers using the latest firmware. I've set the sleep policy to never go to sleep but most of the times I wake my phone up, I'll find it on 3G instead of the full strength WiFi it should be on. On 2.1 when I'd go into WiFi settings it would show the connection and say something along the lines of "Connection unsuccessful, tap to try again" and on 2.2 it just says "Disabled, Secured by blah blah blah". If I retry, it ALWAYS connects and WiFi will stay active for a short period of time before falling back to 3G.
Is there some way I can tell Android to retry the WiFi connection if it fails instead of just giving up? I've been looking through the WiFi API's on the Android Developer site and I'm this close to writing an application that will attempt to mitigate this issue for me.
If I'm within range of one of my pre configured networks, I want the phone to try it's hardest to stay on WiFi. If it loses connection, retry. It it can't get it after 5 retries, wait five minutes and try it again, don't just give up and mark the connection as disabled.
I've read tons of threads about people with WiFi issues and people always say "it's the router, it's the channel, etc, etc" but my WiFi works perfectly fine as long as there is a human to reconnect it if it drops.
Anyone else in the same boat as me?
ok so apparently I'm the only one with an N1 and a WiFi issue.......
I have the same exact issues.
I have the same issue as well and if it stays on I have to turn wifi off and back on so it will connect properly

same issue here. i had been looking for an app that would force the connectivity, but the market doesn't seem to have it. just a bunch of crappy wifi on/off switcher management apps. i'm surprised that no one has hacked this function or built an app for it.
It's certainly a very annoying problem. Mine will go to known good wifi networks, at work, at home and at other locations where my other devices work flawlessly. I have a coworker with the exact same firmware (we updated using the same file) on a nexus one that has never seen this problem, which I find odd, but I'm fairly new to Android. It looks like a software or driver issue to me, but as I said, I'm new to Android.
My device shows the known networks as "Disabled", but I can connect manually.
Looks like it's worth me coding up an App to fix this then.
what kernel are you using? i used to have that problem but that has gone away with newer kernels. unfortunately a new problem has arisen where after being in standby for a while, wifi shows as connected but doesn't have an outside ip. wondering if its my rogers modem or not.

Personally I wouldn't do any work towards writing an app to fix this since it looks to me to be an OS or driver issue that should be resolved in a future release (hopefully in very short order).
An app would really just be a band-aid, but I'm the lazy type and I can deal with using my cell ular data when I don't feel like reconnecting my wifi.
Full disclosure: I'm a crummy programmer and it takes me forever to write stuff so I'm usually less inclined to do it.

I'd rather take the time to fix it then wait for an update that may never arrive. Always fun digging into the API anyways
That's cool. I still find it a bit troubling, though, that some devices see it and some don't, using the same firmware, on the same wireless networks.
I guess it could be a board rev. difference or an app conflict or something. ::shrugs::
I have a similar problem. I use APNdroid to keep cellular data off and use wifi, but I continually have to reconnect wifi no matter what if I am not actively using it. Defeats the purpose of push email.
I downloaded APNdroid after checking data usage and finding that with wifi on there was still significant 3G leakage. Especially confusing with wifi set to never sleep and plugged in overnight.
On the plus side, APNdroid has netted me a lot more battery life, I can almost get two days and one night. I almost never use my spare battery anymore.
Just as an additional data point, I am having the exact same issue with 2.2 FRF83 (I had been on FRF50).
It looks to me like it is simply scanning all of the time and never associating with a known network. I'm not sure why it flags them as "Disabled", however.
Have you guys tried to set the "wi-fi sleep policy" to "never"
if not, try this:
Wifi settings->menu->advanced->wifi sleep policy->Never

Yeah, it doesn't help, that was one of the first things I tried. Any time I leave and come back, the networks show as "Disabled". It's a frustrating issue in that it isn't consistant. It's 80% fail, 20% work.
I had my g1 for a year now and just now got my n1. I havent rooted it b/c of this bug. At first i couldnt listen online radio b/c as soon the display went out it would buffer the whole time. I played with the wifi router and the n1 wifi settings an managed to fix it somehow, BUT when i wake up in the morning for some od reason it lost connection and never reconnected again. So i can hear online radio with the display out but after some hours w/o online radio and just in standby it loses wifi connection and never connects again
This issue is not new. There is a thread on the google forum many pages long. Nobody hase even a clue where it could come from. Some1 on the forum said if u call support they will tell its ur routers fault.
The n1 completly ignores the sleep policy settings.
I have rooted two g1s with goldcard and still using one w/o a problem.

Well, I know fore a fact it's not my access point. I am a network engineer and worked on wireless systems for years and debugging these types of problems is something I'm a bit obsessive about. This stinks of a software or driver problem to me. It could potentially be a hardware revision issue since we have a N1 that works perfectly in all scanerios.
I've tested this with the following access points:
Apple Airport Extreme
Apple Airport Express
Meru
Cisco 1231
Cisco 350
Belkin pre-n
Linksys WRT54G stock
Linksys WRT54G dd-wrt (I forget the build number)
Soekris Engineering running pfSense
All exhibit the same behavior, while my control devices (Apple iPhone 3g, Apple Macbook Pro and a MyTouch 3g running Cyanogen 2.1).
I wasn't aware that this was related to rooting, I'd be more than happy to move back to a stock ROM if that solved my problem. Maybe I'll try that today if I get some time.
Could you possibly post a link to the google forum you're referencing?
I'm currently digging through the alogcat output to see if there is anything interesting in there.
This issue is worse since I upgraded to 83. I'm actually holding off to try CM6 when it comes out to see if there is any better performance there. I'm not sure if he uses updated drivers or kernel that may give better wifi performance.

Hi there, I have the exact same situation, I tried everything, master resets, downgrades of spls and custom roms, and different radios. All didnt work. I asked the same question and no one replied, may mean there is no known solution. I also scoured the web for a whole week, reading almost everything about this issue and trying whatever was suggested to no avail. Now I am selling my HD7 with "the wifi and bluetooth doesnt work".
thanks for the reply and sorry to hear your phone is in the same boat as mine.
Mine seems to be getting worse, slowly affecting other functions of the phone. ive lost count of the hard resets i've done now. somethimes settings wont open, apps dont always open. got to pull the battery to shut the phone off as the screen dulls down if i leave it but it doesnt time off. and the power button sometimes works and sometimes don't.
think unless someone turns up with a magic nswer soon, i'll need to order new phone too. shame coz i really like the hd7
I am having the same problem. Wifi worked fine since I bought the phone on 11/2010, but stopped working last night. When I went to power the phone off, I had to remove the battery because it was stuck on the "Goodbye" screen (the first time this has happened).
Same problem, what can we do?

Exactly the same problem. I've flashed and reflashed, tried all radios from 5.51, 5.52, 5.69 to 5.71.
After a reset the wifi works once or twice then doesn't work anymore :crying:
Must be the module within the phone. I see the middle housing has two connectors for WiFi and GPS, perhaps the WiFi connector doesn't work but it looks like this little thing is only an antenna, not a module.
The part I meen is a "sticker" that's on the same piece of plastic as the kickstand.
Should i replace the entire inner part or would the antenna be enough?
Help: WiFi/Bluetooth Problem
Hi, I suggest you change the title to 'WiFi/Bluetooth Problem' as I also have the same problem. It does not detect either of the two WiFi protocols (WPA2 & WEP) as I tried both with my router (laptops and androids get them both perfect).
Bluetooth on the other hand, does not pair with ANY device. Brings 'Tap to pair' prompt', then the Error 'Not Supported'. I'm running Dynamics v2.0 - Newer WP7.8 custom ROM, but this was the same even with factory ROM.
So are there any developments regarding the problems here? I still got it, no Wi-Fi, no BT...
I have a problem with my WiFi too. everything was ok since I had my HD7 two years ago, and I started to flash many custom roms a year ago with no problems at all. but one month ago my WiFi stopped working without any obvious reason, my phone was connected to wifi and I put it on the table then I picked it up.... no WiFi at all and no internet sharing also. I can turn on or off the green switch of the wifi but only just for fun! and the Wifi icon which usually pops down from the top of my phone will never appear.
I tried to flash new or old roms, many many hard resets with no luck. Also opened my phone to check if there is a hardwear problem but seems not.
Now I'm using cellular for the internet untill I can buy a new phone and break this one.
Ik must be built in or so. Every flash I do, two reboots later, Wi-Fi breaks.
They just want us to get new phones :/
EDIT
I've also installed two different, brand new, SD-card (1 class 2 and 1 class 10) but this gives the same problem.
On a side note, the class 10 is way, way faster
/EDIT
Same here
The WiFi just stopped working out of the blue and nothing i've done has restarted it. It must be something with WP7 because now the wifi icon no longer appears and the Internet sharing option is blank.

Wifi losing connectivity when in Sleep Mode.

It's my only gripe with the HTC One.... When the phone's connected to my router, it flies!!
But... if I put the screen off and put it in my pocket for a while, then get it back out to do something else requiring net access...WiFi's switched off (and yes, it IS set to 'always on' in the WiFi sleep policy btw...) and I have to wait until it re-connects to the router again (which seems to take ages if you're waiting...)
I've been doing some Googling on this and it's quite common with HTC phones apparently....not everyone has it obviously, but I've found no real helpful cure yet if you DO have the problem.
I was thinking of rooting and installing a custom ROM to see if they're any better for me, but the last I knew, if you're rooted, you can't get Sky Go, and it's something I use a LOT, so that's put the blocks on that idea
Any suggestions?
There is two options. One in the power saver and one in the power menu in settings that disable data when the screen is off including wifi. Turn those off.

I hope this helps when I'm at work. I work at a hospital and having my connection to WiFi helps when I walk through areas with no singal I can then switch to WiFi calling. My phone unlike my galaxy s3 always disconnects from the secure guest services. My sgs3 hardly ever did that unless I didn't use it all night. I have to constantly re sign in every time my phone is taken out of my pocket.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
Nope. Unticking BOTH options hasn't made a difference. Still having to wait for the phone to re-establish itself with the router after periods of inactivity....

I am still on 4.1.2 and I'm in the US so we don't have the update yet.
This was one of the first things I noticed after connecting my HTC One (Sprint US) to my home Wi-Fi. It would hold the signal for a bit, maybe a few minutes, and then it would either simply no longer transmit data or the Wi-Fi itself would turn off and back on, with the subsequent connection never establishing a usable data link. Oddly enough, I got my wife an HTC One at the same time (subsidized upgrade for contract renewal), and hers appeared to be working fine, so I was concerned that I had a faulty device. Also, our previous devices (Moto Photons...) worked fine with the Wi-Fi at home as well.
After trying a myriad of settings changes, I found that only one thing worked reliably well: toggling the Wi-Fi off and then back on always resulted in a successful re-establishing of good data throughput to the router and back to the device. I decided to try and see how it performed on other Wi-Fi networks.
I took the device to my place of employment and without fail, the device stayed connected to the Wi-Fi there for the entire 8-10 hours, which only seemed to confirm that there was an issue with my home connectivity with my device only. As annoying as it may be, I am reduced to toggling the Wi-Fi off and back on when I use the phone at home, and I will remain optimistic that this 4.2.2 update fixes my problem, and if not, then I've done enough tinkering with the router at home as well as the phone to be satisfied I tried everything within my power to remedy the situation.
