Unbranded Kaiser Tethering - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

If you have an unlimited PDA connect plan, how would AT&T know if you were tethering? Is there a way to prevent them from detecting this? Sorry for the noob question... Thanks!

If they see large amounts of data transfers, like you downloading stuff, they could slam ya for tethering. I've been using my Tilt to tether my laptop when I wanna stream my webcam from where ever I'm at, and so far I haven't been charged extra. They know you're not gonna be downloading loads of stuff to your Tilt, so that could be something that tips them off. Ya know?

Yeah, but if you have a video program that will play mpeg, or if you live on the road, you will have a lot of data going through... Is there no way for them to tell you are tethered when you use an unbranded tilt?

Doesn't matter if it's branded or not, they still see your data usage. If your usage spikes all of a sudden, they're gonna know something's up. But let's also remember it's quite hard to get the same amount of usage from your phone than your computer. Think about all the processes that use the internet on your computer, compared to your phone.

Ok, so other than usage spikes there is no way for them to detect the fact that I am tethering my unbranded Kaiser to my laptop every once in a great while? If so, that is fantastic...

Tilt & GPS and Internet

Within the next 2 or 3 weeks. I'm planing on getting a Tilt. For all of you already having one I need some info. I've never had a GPS device or Cell phone with that capability so please inform me.
I'm really not playing on using the GPS feature maybe just to play around with and see how it works.
Do I need to have a GPS plan on my account to use this feature, I'm not going to need directions, I just want it to show my location on a map?
Am I correct thinking if I don't use Navagation (Get Directions) feature then its only using my Internet connection?
Can I use any GPS software on the phone?
I'm just trying to make sure I wont be charge for something that I really don't need, just want to try out to locating function here and there. I think it would be fun to have.
GPS is free for using...having a program that usings GPS might not be free..such as tomtom garmin etc...there are going to be free programs such as googlemaps (correct me if i'm wrong)...but using the GPS is completely free and has nothing to do with the cellular provider.

You are pretty much correct.
To use "GPS" to connect to satellites to determine your location does not cost anything.
Applications like Google Maps and MS Live Search can determine your location and give you directions at no cost. They use your data connetion to download maps.
Other applications like Telenav (which you will have a link to download it on your Tilt) charge for downloading directions.
And other apps use pre-installed maps and do not require a data connection. These come in handy where reception is bad.
This is my first phone with these kinds of features, options and capabilities too Before this Kaiser..aka Tilt I had a Razor V3
You can disable your DATA connection through Comm Manager so it will never access or try to access your provider ( mines ATT/Media.Net)
I suggest doing that otherwise you'll find the charges on your bill and not even know you were using the service. Also you can block DATA through your provider and plan.
I did the 1 month free trail with telenav..it was ok but had problems and is slow since it's all server based ( data connection!!). Plus it will cost you about $10 per month..unless you sign up for years then it goes down to around $5 per month...that was not " attractive" to me
I now use and have used for 4 months Garmin XT..its pretty cool and I drive alot ( 3k miles per month ).
If you dont have DATA you cant cash in on gas prices either ( as well as all the Online Xtras )..and who doesn't think of those prices these days. Also no data means noTraffic unless you use a seperate FM reciever of some sort..
Garmin's not perfect, none of em are, but it's pretty darn accurate
Now if you wanna get some real cool media..like free cable TV on your phone that works very good when you have a data connection...lets talk about my Slingbox

Garmin's not perfect, none of em are, but it's pretty darn accurate It hasn't let me down yet. It has voice but does not say the street name in directions...I dont find that to be a problem. The map and route are clear and once you get use to it you should be fine without street names
Now if you wanna get some real cool media..like free cable TV on your phone that works very good when you have a data connection...lets talk about my Slingbox
I really don't need the GPS feature but would like to be able to try it out, mess with the trakking on it from a few projects I've seen. I rarely try some place to an area I've never been before so its not like I need the directions thing. The first thing I'll do is proably remove telenav from the phone just to make sure I don't accidently use it.
So aslong as I remove telenav, and I have my unlimited internet on my phone I should be all good.

My Mobile bill explode!!!help?????????

Hi i've got my diamond for a few days an now my mobile bill explode, because i've opened googlemaps application, wich dowloads in 10 min. ca. 5 mb mapsmaterials. So my bill is going huge.....I thought, that my Diamond will aks me, when it use the mobile service to connect to the i-net. But it did'nt, so i need held.
I'm looking for a program, which ask me everytime when my mobilephone will connect to the i-net with the mobileconnection, if i want this or not....or better which way to connect it should use(when WiFi is aviable)???
So does anybody know of a program like this....or could write it...?
looking forward
Carriers always like that because you get billed without knowing it. Use Modaco Nodata to block internet usage. Call the carrier and say you didn't know and they will probably let you go this one time.
Just install diamond tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=409540
There is a setting to turn your mobile internet on and off as you please.
Hey guys
i use this internet page since last week and i know a lot more about my diamond and have found a lot of great applications...this forum is great...
and thank you for your great and fast answers and the great tipps...
i think i love this forum.....
or use spb gprs monitor to monitor your data usage. great application which enables u to get reports on how much you've used every day/week/month, and alerts when you've use more than an amount of data you have specified. You can also enter the rate at which you are being charged per MB (or per month if u have a fixed allowance) and it will tell you the cost of what you've used.
I have used it for the past three years - it does not cost much and it is a great investment.
Ohh okay... ithink i will test it..in time i use diamond tweaks great tool but i would like it if my mobile connection is turned off and if any programm will start the connection, a tool ask me which connection should be used (wifi or mobile) and i have to click okay when only my mobile is aviable...does anybody know of an Programm like this...?
Diamond tweaks have the problem that u have to turn it on and off how you need it, so you have to start the Programm every time.............................not so comfortable
Does your carrier have an unlimited data package? That would solve everything...
or get an unlimited data package from your service provider and then you dont need to worry...
that's sounds nice but i'm student and not millionaire........
I think that it's a murder to buy a device like Diamond without having at least a small dataplan. It's a very web oriented device, so go to look a volume data plan...even small...you will enjoy much more. Find a little job and go for a dataplan
I pay €9,95 a month to get unlimited internet access. It'd take me 100503 months, or 8375 years, to pay a million for unlimited internet. Somehow, I don't think I'm gonna make that...
*cut* dang, double post :S
use monaco nodata software

Diamond as Modem with O2

hi guys i just added the unlimited web browsing option with o2 on my diamond as we moved into a new flat and we dont have braodband yet.
o2 said i cant use my phone as a modem though, they dont allow you to connect to the net via your computer. i think she meant if i put the sim card into a usb modem.
But im wondering can anyone confirm whether or not i will be charged extra for syncing my diamond to my laptop and using the phone as my modem??
thanks
anyone?.....................
I don't see how they would know?
Other than the excessive downloading...
hey,
i do this all the time and they never know. do you have unlimited web on phone?
You can indeed connect your phone to your pc and use it as a modem to access the internet. When you connect your phone to your pc you should have the option to choose "internet sharing" mode which allows this. However although i have an XDA Ignito I am running a cooked rom and i'm not sure if "internet sharing" is available as an option on the standard o2 rom. Either way if you do have that option it wont cost you anything as long as you keep within the fair usage policy.
thanks guys, i basically used it yesterday and checked my charges today and no extra charges so all seems ok. i have the unlimited web, run a cooked rom with the internet sharing option on a diamond so works fine and is actually quite fast!
i think you are right if you use it a lot to download films etc they will find out, shame but never mind hopefully sky will hurry up and install our BB soon
Thanks again for the help!

[Q] Still running into costs with NoData onboard. What now?

Hello, my fellow WM and Xperia X1 users! (Yes, cracking hard but still rocking).
I have a question. Recently I discovered extra payments had to be made on my Vodafone bills. It was for data usage, an MB here and there made up for quite a bit of money. Yes, I'm a student so that's the main reason why I'm worrying about it
The second reason... With WM 6.5.3 installed I immediately noticed my phone had the *bad* habit to throw itself onboard the internet train every time I used something with data involved. YouTube, e-mail, etc. I can imagine, the phone explained this with using 3G (sorry, I'm not so into the terminology) to back up my WiFi. I picked this phone with care because it had WiFi and aGPS and I managed to lay my hands on a cheap one. It was a real steal then Now I know better with Crackgate etc but okay, back ontopic...
I took it for granted that the first month I would have extra costs, trying to kill the Data Connection it put up everytime. Immediately went searching for a program or app able to manage or kill internet for me in the case the phone wanted it. The Interwebz came up with NoData, the Holy Grail and solution to everything including HIV! A dream of a piece of software and after installation it was pretty much impossible to reach the internet again without having WiFi on at my home network.
Now the bills suddenly came up with cash drawals for my phone randomly hooking up to the Net in the Netherlands. Strange. I went indepth and looked for clues. The PDF files on My Vodafone revealed the X1 with pretty rhythmic intervals (20 minutes exactly, 15 minutes, 20, 20, 15, etc) went on to connect to the network, using a bit of data and putting me almost into the red digits. I truly didn't want that, when I was awake it managed to do that quite a few times but it continued in the night. Really strange behaviour.
Now I called Vodafone about it, they say it's the phone randomly going on trying to hook up. When I notified em about extra software taking care of that, I was almost nailed to the wall and told in a not-nice way they had no affiliations or 'whatever' (quote) to those pieces of software and that I had to blame the creator for it.
Okay, it was nice for them to come up with the idea of complaining and making a deal out of it with sharing costs when I could prove I hadn't touched my phone (easy with those rhythmic logs) but it's about the bad aftertaste... Wasn't NoData meant to break the interwebz on my phone entirely? I am towards the opinion VFs story is bull**** by the way, I'd like to hear your opinion on this one though!
Edit: I posted this thread in X1 General because of the supposed relevance of the phone itself. It might be an issue over there, not with NoData.

First I would try to get in touch with the creator of NoData app.
Second, if you can shut down your phone, remove the batteries for 24-48 hours. Then call Vodafone and see if you have any charges.
Also can you see where are the connection made (like to what site)?
If you can see where is it trying to connect, it would be easier to narrow down the application and either disable it or remove.

[Q] Ideas for my old tilt

What I have: AT&T Tilt
What I would like to be able to do.
Stream music/video via wifi to the phone. I have this figured out.
Stream camera video over wifi, like a webcam.
Connect to my laptop and use the phones gps for the laptop.
Turn off the phone part all together since it doesnt have a sim card.
Remotely control my pc over wifi.
ssh into linux. I have this figured out also. currently use pocket putty (i think its called)
What i am willing to do is pretty much anything that wont brick the phone, basically I want to use it around my house to do all of these things instead of carrying my main phone with me to listen to music and such.
I had thought about putting android on it but i am reading conflicting stories about the camera not working. Is this still the case?
I just need a point in the right direction at the moment. Also if someone has other ideas for the use of the phone that would be great.
I do apologize if this has been covered before, but ive read most of the tilt/kaiser forums and there is just so much information to sift through, some of it so out of date (the phone is so old now) I dont know whats around anymore.
Anyways thanks in advance for any information you send.
Jason
really noone knows if this is possible and how by now?
