I am not roaming, I am home. arrrggh!!! - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

For some strange reason my phone thinks I am roaming when i'm not and keeps warning me about additional data charges everytime I check my email. I tried to choose my provider from the dropdown list but there are no Canadian providers listed..... and yes I am in Canada. I don't mind the warning so much but it also won't connect automatically and check my email. How can I fix this?
thanks.

Hi Dongetti
Welcome to XDA-Dev
Your question is fine, but it would be better placed in the regular Kaiser forum as it does not related to Upgrading/Development.
I will move it to the Kaiser Forum with an expiring (6hrs) redirect from the Kaiser upgrading Forum. So by tomorrow you will know where to look for it.
Cheers
Mike

Where in canada do you reside? are you close to a border of some kind?

Roam?
I have that same (problem) with my 8525, after I got the Tilt I added a second line and even though the phones have shared minutes and are billed together the Hermes still thinks it's roaming when the Tilt doesn't.
I called the carrier and she told me it was a fix on their end and that I would have to call back to customer service, it's not the phone or ROM.

I'm running Dutty's WM6 on AT&T Tilt, in Toronto on Rogers, works fine.

Thanks for the replies....
By the way, i'm running Sleuth 1.0 on AT&T tilt and no I don't live anywhere near the US border.

I'm having the same damn problem. In the morning there's a stupid triangle up on my today screen. Is that what you are talking about?

No my problem is this:
go to control panel (start -> settings ).
Then go to the connections page.
Then tap connection setup, it will give you a list of Countries to choose from and and then a list of providers below that. The problem is that my provider is not listed and that makes the phone think i'm roaming when I am not. Even though I enter my connection settings manually it won't connect 'automatically' to check my email. Therefore, I have to go in and send/receive manually to see if I got any new mail and it always warns me that i'm roaming(when i'm not) and checking my email may result in data charges.

That's not your problem, you can always manually configure your connection settings to your carrier's.
The problem is that your phone think's it's roaming based on the wireless signals from the tower...

dongetti, probably you're using fido sim?
if that's the case, then it's not fixable. As you know since Robbers acquired Fido, they have integrated the tower. But for some reason, the code for fido was being left in your sim (they don't change it to Robber's code). No other choice than to use Rogers signal, since that's the only one available now anyway.

Are there roaming charges if it is roaming between rogers and fido? even after the merger?

No there wont be any roaming charges.. for more info on this check the fido section in the howard forums website, also you can check with fido's customer service about this issue
i've been with fido for about 3 years now with an unlocked phone right from the start and every phone i've had has the little roaming symbol at the top, but i've never seen any roaming charges on it yet

Kaiser (TyTn II) not working with Fido. Help!

I've had my Kaiser for 2 days now with no probs. Then today, a nightmare. I cannot make any calls longer than 10 secs. For some reason as soon as i make a call it shows the 3g logo then kicks the call, loses the network connection then gets it back. it also shows the E for edge Icon all the time and its this icon that changes to 3g during a call. It also has the triangle icon all the time, which is roaming. i sure as hell hope im not! all other functions in this device work like a charm-texting, gps, wifi- all work great. Im on fido in Vancouver. This is not a supported handset and so i get no help from them( i dont think the 20 year olds that man the tech lines have a clue anyway). I read that it may be due to an old sim card, is this likely? Any help would be appreciated, im at my wits end, and im starting to think of selling. Help!
P.S.
I dont care about data connection other than Wifi, since the data plans are a joke here. So i dont even want these features active.
Try to switch your phone to GSM only (under phone options/band)
Dag Gammit i think this may have done it! -crossing fingers and testing- will play around with this some more and see what happens. thanks for the suggestion.
Yes indeed ID64, has it right. It's not just this phone that tries to seek the strongest band around, but drops the call in the process.
Changing using settings to GSM only works, but you may be in situations where you want the other bands. You can use the same method to switch back, But you might want a nicer/quicker way using Danielherrero's Bandswitch or Commmgrpro application. He's a member here and you can search here or google. The early freeware version is around somewhere.

Fido and the roaming triangle
I wouldn't worry about the roaming thing, since all of the towers report as rogers since the network conversion.
Here in Winnipeg I'm always roaming and it has never been an issue. I'm even calling long distance (Calgary?) for voice mail.
I haven't tried it since have the all you can eat data plan for $50. but I vaguely recall seeing in the wizard forum that apparently you can get a cheap data plan through fido if you claim your phone is a HipTop. Worth a try if you want data.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1135200&postcount=6
hiptop
Umm, just out of curiosity, does the HipTop thing still work? and what is it exactly?
I am about to get a plan and this one sounds intriging..
I'm on Fido with a Tilt too, works flawlessly with my 8 year old sim card. I'm very interested in this Hip-Top data plan. Has anybody tried it yet? someone definatly should and let us know!
any way to get rid of the roaming notifications so we can enable automatic email downloading? feature will not work while roaming and my FIDO phone is always roaming on my home network. can't find a registry hack for the Kaiser for this.
Fido roaming and e-mail
I haven't found a way to turn off the roaming notification. However you can set up e-mail accounts to automatically download even when roaming. Obviously if you do really roam you will be charged mightily so I would use with caution.
for hotmail (windows live) it's option 5 in the options menu item
for other accounts
-Send/Receive Schedule
-- Advanced Settings
--- Use automatic send/receive schedule when roaming
send/recieve schedule when roaming

My rom will not let me enable the automatic send/recieve when roaming without FIRST defining a send/recieve schedule. The schedule is inconveniant becuase i don't want the phone to stay on 3G connected 24hrs/day or my battery goes dead. I have it set to disconect 3G after 45 seconds but this only works if the phone is ON. When the phone is in sleep state it will leave the 3G on all the time so it opens up a whole other can of worms/problems. Does your rom let you enable this send/recieve while roaming option without first enabling a schedule? if so, which rom you using?

Adding home (non-roaming) network

I live in Canada and have a Fido SIM card. When Rogers and Fido merged, the old Fido network ID (302-370) was made defunct so that the only GSM network available is the Rogers one (302-720).
As I am a Fido customer, it means that my Kaiser believes that it is always roaming as 302-370 is my home network and I can't use the roaming-based data rules to manage my data charges when I'm truly roaming.
Is there a way to add 302-720 as a "home network" as far as the Kaiser is concerned? Is this defined in the registry or in the ROM?
I am currently using the stock HTC ROM.
Thanks.
Its defined on the Sim card, just call Rogers and tell them what happened, and Im sure that they'll send you a new card with 302-720 as a home network.
Otherwise, I dont wanna be a Canadian Idiot! (LOL at Wierd Al for his song...)
Eh?
I've been in touch with both the regular customer service people and their "network people". They are either unable or unwilling to make that change for me. It is possible that they use the SIM's home network as a key to decide which back-end database they reference. Although they merged the two GSM networks, they still operate as two separate companies (apart from the price collusion, of course).
Yesterday, I even bought a new latest-generation SIM card to replace my ancient one thinking that it may fix the problem. No luck - it still uses the Fido network id.
So, as the SIM card is stuck the way it is, I need a way to override my Kaiser's opinion that the Rogers network is a roaming one.
I have a really similar problem, plus another one which might be related.
I am in the UK and on the "Three" network, they are mainly a 3G network and i'm not sure but they might not have 'any' 2G transmitters. So when I have 3G coverage there is no roaming icon and everything works fine.
If however I am in a 2G area and using their roaming partner (not sure who yet, possibly Orange) the GPRS will not work unless I go in and tell the phone to search for a network automatically then make a connection straight away. It says there is GPRS signal and connects but I can't actually transfer any data. The GSM standard phone calls and TXT messages work fine without doing that.
If anyone does have an answer on how to add additional home networks I would be gratefull to know too.
I have the same problem with Fido; however, when I put my SIM into a Samsung Jack flashed with Fido ROM, the roaming problem is gone. The Samsung Jack was from Rogers. This leads me to believe that the roaming is somehow set by the ROM.
I don't believe there is anyway you are going to be able to make the Rogers network not think you are a Rogers customer through a registry hack.
Maybe you can find a work around by using those dialing rules?
And the only real fix is to bite the bullet and switch over to a Rogers contract.
Switching over to Rogers will resolve the roaming issue and will finally be rid of the text from 18 for voicemail; however, I don't want to lose my old City Fido plan.
i also face same problem any solution guy's ?

Reward $125 : Trick Diamond into thinking that it is not roaming

I have the Diamond from the Rogers network in Canada. It is SIM unlocked and constantly flashed with a variety of different ROMs. I am on the Fido network in Canada, which was purchased by the Rogers network. Ever since Rogers bought Fido, every phone I put my SIM in shows roaming.
Fido has been no help in solving the roaming problem. I have gone through this and many forums and have not found a solution to this problem.
Many individuals have claimed that this is not possible and that it is defined by the network; however, I think the Windows Mobile OS can be tricked to thinking that it is on the home network, due to the following: I have a Samsung SGH-i616 originally from the Rogers network. I have SIM unlocked it and flashed it with the Fido Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM. This phone does not show that it is roaming. Everything works like it is on the home network for this phone.
I am willing to give US$100 to whoever could make a CAB or something that will trick the phone into thinking that it is not roaming. The fix should not just hide the roaming icon. It should make the phone work as if it was on a home network.
Who is willing to solve this problem and claim the fabulous reward???
Everyone that uses an HTC device with Fido suffers from this problem. I know that people on the Telfort network suffer from this roaming problem too. Surely, I am not the only one that has been severely annoyed by this right?
Dude, have a look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=503131&highlight=roaming see if that helps.
Thanks for the tip. Have looked into the thread before. Does not offer any help in defining a network as a home network.
If it helps in fixing my problem, all the files on my Samsung i616 (RILGSM.Dll files and such) are at their disposal.
try this (just throwing it out there)
hklm\software\microsoft\mds\cebits\roaming and set it to zero
i see some other registry settings but they do not look like they could be applicable.
Didn't have a registry entry there. Created a new dword called Roaming with value of 0. Rebooted my phone. Still the same. Roaming
Have you tried that other app No Data mentioned in that previous post?
Tried the No Data app. Does not trick phone into thinking it is not roaming. It disables data when roaming. Since my phone thinks it is roaming all the time, it successfully turns off data in my home network.

WU or Paypall !!!
If you are able to solve my problem, I will pay you in any method you prefer. PayPal or Western Union is fine by me. Heck, I'll even put dollar bills in an envelope and post it to you if you prefer
A friend of mine is suffering from the same problem and is willing to give $25 to have the problem solved. So the reward is now $125.
If anyone else is having this problem, please put forward your pledge so that an enterprising developer can fix this issue and claim the large bounty.
I was looking for the EXACT same thing and I guess it means there's no solution?
Like you, I'm a Fido customer using a Rogers smartphone (Touch) and it always shows I'm roaming ... some programs can get around it, others cannot, and I get asked "Do you want to enable data connection when roaming? It may cost you." every time.
I'm also having the same problem. It's quite common in Norway, where a couple of big companies own the networks and the other providers "roam" in their network. Annoying.
Maybe you should contact Rogers to get a SIM card of them? Since Rogers bought Fido, so maybe you should get a Rogers card?
I am also having a roaming issue. I have nation wide coverage but when I get out of the state of Wisconsin, I start roaming. I get warnings about I am roaming and additional charges may apply when I open, send, or receive on email, internet, youtube, facebook ... pretty much anything data. I have an unlimited data plan so this shouldn't be an issue? I have nation wide coverage...
Gah! How to disable these warnings? Some adv. config / tweak program or registry edit?

Can't put a Rogers SIM on the Fido network. Will get a validation error.
Does anybody have any input on how to get this issue fixed. I am very close to canceling my contract with my carrier over this problem
Same Trouble here in Montreal with my Rogers Diamond Phone (unlocked) and SIM fido.
ALWAYS ROAMING Grrrr
And I can't setup e-mail correctly and no home network to!
KaNiMziE
I also have recently activated an HTC Diamond on Fido, and constantly have the roaming icon above. It doesn't really bother me at all, however, I am just concerned about actual roaming charged. Roaming should be defined by the cell towers, correct? So, even though it displays a roaming icon, I am not really roaming at home, and therefore, will not be charged. Could anyone confirm?

Kaiser on Fido (Canada) & roaming

Hello all,
I have searched these forums high and low, but could not find a solution to my problem. I have a Kaiser which I use on the Canadian provider Fido. Since late 2004, Fido is a wholly owned subsidiary of Rogers, another Canadian wireless provider. Fido and Rogers now share one same network: Rogers'. My problem is that my Kaiser, having a Fido SIM in it, seems to always think it is roaming because it is connecting to the Rogers network. This causes me a problem since I cannot tell my phone to only download when on my home network, otherwise I would never be able to download anything (since I am always roaming). If I tell my phone to download even when roaming, I cannot control my usage when I actually am roaming in another country. I know there must be some kind of setting somewhere that I can adjust to make my phone think it is not roaming while connected to Rogers' network, I just don't know what it is. No matter what ROM I try, I can't get rid of that pesky "roaming triangle"! My gf's phone, a Samsung Jack, does not think it is forever roaming, so I know it is possible.
Does anyone have any insight on this?
Thanks in advance!
Dom
Hello there.
I have used my kaiser with Saudi Sim card, Lebanese Sim card, Jordanian Sim card and now FIDO sim card. Ive always had this triangle and has never affected my data plan.

Me too, I even had my roaming turned off by Fido for some time and the triangle was still there.
Thanks for the input, guys. I know that the roaming icon will not prevent me from accessing 3G data. What it does prevent me from doing, though, is differentiating between "real" roaming (i.e. in another country) and "fake" roaming (i.e. on the Rogers network). As it stands, all settings which can be set to "use 3G data only when not roaming" are ineffective as I would never be able to download anything if they were enabled.
I hope that clears things up. And I hope that someone smarter than I am has a solution for this problem.
Thanks again!
Hello, I have the exact same phone on the exact same fido network and have the roaming triangle as well. It does not affect your data/voice plan at all. (ie. if you are in the Canada, you will not be charged for roaming). This is all explained in the following link:
http://howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=837503
Essentially the gist of it is that you are "roaming" on the rogers network, but since they are the same company, it doesn't matter or affect any of your plans. I have used my 6GB data plan from Fido with no extra charges.
It does effect some programs that do provide options for disabling web traffic when roaming (ie. hotmail push e-mail from windows live) as these programs will always think you are on another network.
What I have done is, predominantly, I use my wifi connection where available and have turned off all the "disabling traffic when roaming" options in various apps. Then in the fido internet (3G;GPRS) settings, I did not include the password. What this does is that when I connect to the internet without wifi it asks me for my password which I then enter to connect. Definitely mildly inconvenient, but prevents me from 'accidentally' connecting to the internet when in the US.
Thanks ibhimani.
I have taken similar measures to prevent roaming fees, but I use MoDaCo's NODATA app, instead. Basically, it allows me to completely turn off all cellular data connections (WiFi remains intact) while I am away.
Still, I don't think this is a real solution; it is a workaround at best. I know there is a way to force the phone to recognize the Rogers network as a "Home" network since my gf's Samsung Jack does not claim to be roaming at all times. I will try to look through the registry on the Jack to see if there is some setting I can tweak to achieve the desired effect. I'll let you all know if I find something.
That would be great. Thanks in advance.
No luck!
Hi all,
After a little research in the registry of my gf's Samsung Jack, I've found that the way the network is handled on it is different than on our HTC. The Samsung uses something called MITSMan.exe (Mobile Intelligent Terminal by Samsung Manager) which can identify the network correctly on her phone, but not on ours. Unfortunately, this is not reusable for us. The search continues. Hopefully, a WinMo HTC device will launch on Fido sometime soon so I can reuse something from it.
If I find anything else, I'll post it here.
I have a Nokia e62 and the Samsung Jack from Fido. Both these phones do not show the roaming icon. Must be some sort of custom firmware brewed for Fido by the manufacturers.
BTW - I am now using a Samsung Omnia II. This shows roaming too.

Hi hameedx,
With a Samsung Omnia II, you may be able to make a change to the registry to make it think you're on the home network, if it works like the Samsung Jack. On your Jack, search through the registry for something called MITSman. There should be a value corresponding to Fido's carrier code (MNC-MCC), which is 302-370 (or 302-720, which is Rogers'). It may actually be easier to search for these values. If the Omnia also uses MITSman, then you might be able to make the registry entries on it look like the ones on the Jack. If you need more detail about the registry entries, I could get them when I have access to a Jack again.
I searched the Jack's registry for anything with 302 720 370 72 37. Couldn't find any meaningful entry. Perhaps it is a DLL that we need to replace?
I believe that the Fido Samsung Jack has roaming indicator disabled completely. I used a Telus SIM in the Jack and does not show roaming. The Telus SIM shows roaming when I put it in other unlocked phones.

Network Operator connection

I own a t-mobile version of the nexus one. I can connect fine to their network with no problem, however i do find myself in a complete t-mobile dead zone sometimes. When im at that location other people with AT&T devices have pretty good service. I noticed that in the Wireless & Network settings -> Mobile Networks -> Network Operators, it does find AT&T on there. However, when trying to connect to it, it gives the following error:
"Your SIM card does not allow a connection to this network"
At that location, i was also with someone who had t-mobile with a Motorola Cliq, who was able to access this AT&T network without a problem (although it was a G connection)
Is there something i can do to access this network with my phone and sim card?
Maybe some sort of sim unlock code i need to get from t-mobile?
same here/..
actually.. im having that problem right now! O.O;
I have full bars yet i can't send txt msgs or call anyone.. and when i try to turn on wifi it says updating wifi then turns off... wtf?
anyone have any ideas?
Are you on a pre-paid account? Sometimes the pre-paid accounts do not support roaming (even though you aren't paying roaming on a contact account).
Also; it depends on the freq of that network. Ummm; if the phone is unlocked or not.
There could be a number of issues. You could try and call T-Mobile and ask them. But it just could be that it's At&t and that specific area might not be roaming enabled.
Just my 2-cents.

Check your logic. I'm sure that roaming would be enable in big NYC. WE are in two different areas also. Plus I am on postpaid. Also the phone is QUAD band, it does not need 3G to roam on AT&T EDGE network...come on now.
I ended up contacting google phone support about this. The tech i spoke to on the line was able to recreate the issue.
When he contacted t-mobile support for us t-mobile said basically if they own the property rights for the area you're in (disregarding your signal strength) you are unable to connect to any other network. If you are outside of a t-mobile coverage area, you are then able to roam.
