AT&T Tilt using BlackBerry Connect in Canada? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi there,
i was wondering if anyone is currently using a Tilt on a BlackBerry connect plan with any Canadian carrier?
I called Rogers and they say they have stopped that service - in their words, if you want to connect to the BlackBerry, use a BlackBerry; otherwise subscirbe to the Windows Mobile plan.
well, the idea is to NOT carry 2 phones.
Another thing that I'd like some help on -
is there a program or some setting that enables a custom media file to be played when I receive an email/sms?
Thanks A Million for helping!

umm..that is incorrect
Rogers still has and uses BBConnect
If you are an AT&T Customer and you roam you should be fine, it will take a minute to re-register you with the BIS server, but past that there shouldn't be any difference

well that's what the Rogers' BB support said over the phone.
I spent an hour getting tossed from and to various depts.
btw, I need to connect to the BES that's hosted in-house;
so - can I just subscribe to any Blackberry plan,
then get BB connect on my own,
and that will enable me to connect to our own BES?
Cheers and Thanks Cohen.

D: You are on the PDA connect plan or the Media net plan. - I am actually on the 20 dollar media net plan PREPAID haha
And on WAP.CINGULAR I do not use a proxy and get full net access plus 3g. I went prepaid because I had heard ATT/Cingular had overbilled people that used alot of data on their phones while having a media net plan because they figured a "media net phone" couldnt use gigs of data. So people had gotten like 500 dollar bills and I wanted to avoid that so I went the prepaid route.

I am actually using my Kaiser on the iPhone data plan. I originally got an iPhone and used it for a few months until I got frustrated that it didn't support exchange. I put the SIM into my new TyTN II and it works great with no changes to my original iPhone plan. The phone says it is using MediaNET for the connection. Unfortunately we only have edge speed out here in Denver.

I did the same. The only thing is I ran into a few problems with voicemail and MMS so I called and had my plan switched back to mediamax 200 and everything works great.

Thanks... now if those of you who responded could do me another favor.
Please use this link to do a speed test on your device, http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1
If you can, please use 3g and both of the wap.cingular conections, one with the proxy and one without and report your download speeds...
I used to get 550kbs-800kbs in Los Angeles, on ATT's 3g, PDA Unlimited Plan, but now I am getting 250-400. All this started after I gave them my IMEI number and the idiots in Customer Care told me that my phone is unrecognized and that It is not 3g capable... well, 5 hours later, I now have the direct number to ANS and they have created a ticket for me and are actually trying to help...
I am asking you all to give me the speeds, so that I may be able to find out if it is my account only, or if ATT has been corking the 3g conection here in LA..
Thanks
JB
I doubt you'll get much good data, since your throughput can be affected by so many environmental variables. Like the type of browser you're using. PIE report 167Kbps for me (I'm just outside Long Beach, CA), Opera reports between 800Kbps to 1.1Mbps.
But I have an unlocked TyTN II on AT&T and using the default config that the SIM sets up, those are the speeds I'm getting.

Thanks for the reply...
When I use PIE and opera I get the same speeds... Environment and other variables affect me less then the fact that ATT's network speeds when put on a graph look like spike city... It almost looks like the connection can run faster but is corked after 300kbits are sent...
Please continue checking...
JB
in PIE I got 385k, with Opera-Mini I got 1,542kbit/sec 0.44s latency. That was with the max 1MB file size. In Corona Del Mar
iPhone plan using wap.cingular, getting 1510 kb/sec with .32s latency, 5.744 d/l time, max 1mb file, San Diego on Opera.
Same other variables but switched to isp.cingular, getting 2013kb/sec, .343s latency, 5.398s d/l time.
I couldn't test PIE because apparently java needs to be installed. Go figure, since Opera's running fine.
Yes to all.
I have PDA Connect unlimited.
I'm getting 1520kb/s using opera.
FYI: I've seen 2.2 using 2wire.com not sure if it's reliable though

When you gave at&t your IMEI#, the Kasier comes up as unknown in the at&t provisioning system. By default it is set to GSM device and not UMTS. This has been discussed in the at&t/Cingular forum.
BillMNJ wrote:
I spent almost an hour on with AT&T's data support and the guy said the reason was the failure of my devices IMEI# to register the devices hardware. There seems to be no hardware profile for the TyTnII ansd therefore it comes up as an "unknown device" in their provisioning system. I confirmed this on my visit to the store this afternoon as the rep there showed me the screen and sure enough, it comes up as unknown, and the setting for this selection is GSM, not UMTS which all of their 3G phones are set to. He said, your device "does not exist" in a valid profile as a UMTS device and therefore will never be able to see a 3G signal even if I was sitting under a 3G tower... He showed me his phone which is 3G capable and id did indeed have UMTS and a valid hardware profile.

Any way to get WAP access via AT&T on the Kaiser?

I just switched to AT&T from T-Mobile (using an MDA) so I could get the Kaiser/Tilt at a great price.
Back with T-Mobile I used to pay for the T-Zones account for $5.99 a month and I would be able to get (albeit slow) internet access using that plan. Since I am usualy in an area with WiFi that worked out fine for me in the few instances when I needed the net while WiFi wasnt available.
AT&T though seems to only have data plans starting at $29.99 and up for the Tilt.
Does AT&T offer a similar WAP plan for another phone that I could put onto my plan and access the net the same way I used to with my MDA on T-Mobile?
with the right sales person, and the right person saying the right things, you can get 3g speeds for 19.99/month.
I think I just saw that plan on their site, the Cellular Connect Unlimited w/ Mail, meant for normal phone's not PDA's.
Guess I'll have to look into that option. Thanks.

AT&T Tilt with BlackBerry Connect - can't use on a BlackBerry plan?

After being told by AT&T that it would work, I purchased a Tilt and asked to be signed up on the International Blackberry plan so that I could use the Blackberry Connect for data worldwide.
I haven't rec'd the Tilt yet, but I did receive my account info, so I called AT&T today to make the change. They informed me that because it is not a Blackberry device, they can't put me on the BlackBerry International plan.
Has anyone used a Blackberry Plan on the AT&T Tilt? I can probably convince them I have an unlocked Blackberry (or just buy a cheap one) and then try using it on the Tilt - does anyone know if that would work? They are telling me that their network would not allow it to work since the Tilt isn't a Blackberry and I would be charged for data use since the Blackberry plan only includes Blackberry data.
I was told last week that it wouldn't be a problem (and even recorded the call!), but now that I have made the purchase, they are saying it won't work.
I really would rather stick with the Tilt, but I need the BB International Plan (unlimited international data and e-mail), so I guess I'll have to return it for a BB unless anyone has experience with this.
Thanks!
i'm using my tilt with the blackberry plan (domestic only). since this is a tilt, they have it activated for both blackberry and media.net
i can't speak to the international plans however.
I would ask to speak to some other rep. The support for blackberry connect is well documented on their web site.

Thanks! I did try a few reps today - of course I couldn't get the same one I had last week who told me it would work!
Did you need to get the media.net plan for data? I thought with the regular blackberry plan you would get both data and e-mail on the Tilt if you were using the blackberry connect software?
Did they give you an actual blackberry plan? They said I had to have a "blackberry connect" plan, and not a regular blackberry plan.
I bought my tilt online and selected the plan that way. I even had a rep call me asking why I had it on there. I told them I am not the account holder and they better not make any changes to the account. They didn't. Sorry if this didn't help you, just for any other people looking to do the same thing.
I wonder if you bought an old Blackberry phone and called them with the IMIE if they would activate that phone then just switch the SIM.
Call back again and tell them you want the PDA Connect for BlackBerry® Connect Unlimited . The code is KRB9
I'm no blackberry expert. My understanding is that blackberry normally uses the blackberry service and browser to access the internet. On the tilt the phone is activated for both media.net and blackberry service. The media.net is used to browse the internet normally. The blackberry connect establishes a permanent connection to the blackberry service. I do know that I told them specifically that i wanted to use it with a BES server at work (Blackberry Enterprise).
I've had the tilt working with Blackberry connect on both ATT and Tmobile.

I had a similar problem. The "solution" they set up for me is the pda blackberry connect unlimited combined with a 20Mb pda smart international plan. That gives me 20Mb a month of international data in about twenty countries (the list has probably grown) without roaming data rates. This works OK for me because country I cared about (Japan) is on the list. Heck, the only reason I bought the Tilt was because it would work in Japan and BBConnect is available for it. The only problem is the 20Mb limit. That isn't a big problem for me because I'm not there for large stretches of time. YMMV.
If that works for you, great. If not, take it back and wait a couple of weeks for the Blackberry Bold. It will also have 2100MHz UMTS and you can get the BB International plan.
I managed to get them to set it up by getting a BlackBerry Bold and giving them the IMEI. I never actually opened the Bold box - just used the IMEI to convince them to give me the plan.
I put the SIM in the tilt, installed the Blackberry Connect and all seems to be well.
The BlackBerry International plan is the only one with unlimited data, and since I spend most of my time outside of the USA, the other "Connect" plans just won't work for me.
I have a question about the media.net - I assume I won't be charged for data on it since I have the BB International plan that includes unlimited data? Has anyone else used this?

FTP Over UK t-mobile 3G With Kaiser ?

I've tried to FTP into a known working FTP server via a 3G connection supplied by t-mobile UK - FAIL
Tech support at t-mobile say the Vario III isn't capable of FTP which I find difficult to believe.
Anyone else used FTP via laptop using their kaiser as a modem ?
Not one reply ?
No one does FTP with their Vario II III or IV ?
C'mon guys and gals help a guy bust a telco
Is port 21 accessible to you on your device & network ?
If so, t-mobile UK is shining me on by telling me it's the fault of the device rather then them blocking port 21 to prevent skype / portmapping etc.
I'm also on T-Mo UK with the MDA Vario III (Kaiser)...
It's probably an issue with the contract you're on. I originally had plain Web 'n' Walk, and I was told at point of sale that this will enable HSDPA at *full speed*, enable me to use my phone almost as a broadband modem and enable me to use all internet protocols. I tried for ages to get MSN working on my laptop when sharing the Kaiser's internet with no luck at all (long before I discovered this place)... After running a few speed tests using a HSDPA connection on my phone, I discovered I wasn't getting the speed I probably should. Called T-Mo tech support and they advised that no, I actually need web 'n' walk plus to get full speed HSDPA (3.8mbit, IIRC) and access to all data protocols. Now MSN works perfectly!
I've not tested FTP access, but it's worth calling T-Mo or checking which Web 'n' Walk plan you're on (if any at all) - this is the most likely problem.
And you're probably right, it's probably to stop you screwing them out of money by using VoIP rather than the cellular network .

ATT blocking mediamax

Hi guys,
first off i know how to disable proxy on treo 750 and mediamax has always been working.
the problem started happening here in edison, NJ area. A couple days ago where i cant connect to internet using media max. Funny thing is that when i went out the area and tried it in my house mediamax works fine and figured that ATT is having network issue.
But today its still not working again in this area and just want to ask your opinion if ATT is finally laying out the law with the new user agreements and they're using this area as a test site.
Or should i wait and see wut happens.
I also tried my sim on treo 750 and blackjack II and none of them works. I then inserted my sim on a Nlkia 6085 handheld and mediamax works. I'm definitely leaning on ATT making changes on their network.
if it worked in the nokia and not in the other devices than they're probably detecting your device on the network and limiting it.
I just recently got "caught" and had to switch over to PDA personal after 4-5 years of medianet on my winmo devices
true, but whats bothering me is that outside of this area mediamax works fine on treo750 and blackjack II. I just posted it since I want to get an idea if anyone else getting the problem and If ATT is targeting their larger markets first. Were about 30 of new york city.
I found out the problem. ATT 3G network was down thats why i cant connect to internet. And the treo 750 stock rom just always default to 3G. So rest assured guys ATT is not blocking anything.
