I have the telenav maps app on my tilt but want the full gps version with the turn by turn talking directions,how do I get this? Do I simply download or buy the full service for $9.99 a month? it doesn't seem to be giving me an opion to do that later. Thanks for any help guys.

yes $9.99/month unless you know someone at AT$T. that's the only way to get turn by turn talking directions w/ telenav.
hey thanks guys so your saying if i use the "upgrade to gps navgation" option for $9.99 a month ill get the talking turn by turn directions? Also is there anyway to route the audio to my bluetooth headset?
Go to the TeleNav site. They have a free 30 day demo and their site pretty much sums up everything you need to know.
Afaik, TeleNav is about the only GPS mapping program that you can speak your destination into and it will come up with a route. It calls a toll-free number and does it via voice recognition.
Their POI database is much larger than most as well. Map updates are (supposedly) every three months, unlike others which may be years.

I have been using TeleNav for a couple of months past the 30 day trial and have been pleased with it. My rational is that for 10 bucks a month I can go 20-30 months ($200-$300) which is what I would spend on a separate GPS that I would have to replace by that time anyhow. If a real killer deal comes up on a separate GPS I can just cancel this service.
Some of the things I like are:
1. Street announcements for turns. A friend just got a new Tom-Tom so we were using them together in the car. I do prefer the way the TeleNav communicates the route by street names.
2. I have used the call in service while I was driving and it worked well.
3. I like the choices of the way you want your route to be planned. Your choices are:
Fastest
Shortest
Traffic Optimized
Prefer Streets
Prefer highways
Pedestrian
4. Web site ability to set up routes.
5. It seems to "play well" with the other two programs that I usually run with it (Navizon and another favorite GPS Speed - http://tchartdev.com/ )
No bad negatives but:
1. When the screen dims and I touch it to bring the screen up I sometimes move my position a bit but it is recoverable quickly.
2. Of course screen size but that is just the nature of GPS on the Tilt.
3. Volume is better with the new ROM update and KTweak but I still would like it louder - "Huh Wad ya say"
4. I would like an easy way to repeat the last direction due to 3 above.

Sometimes I can't find the closest Wal-Mart when traveling but that is the same problem I had with the Never-Lost that I used to get in the Hertz cars I rented while traveling out of town.
It wasn't until I let the trial time expire and I had to pay for it one month that I really started to play with the features so I will probably keep it for the foreseeable future.
Overall, I would think it is worth spending 10 - 20 bucks for a couple of extra months to see if you really find it useful.

You could also drop TeleNav & load up TomTom. North American/Canada map is about $110 which gives you a 1yr payback time. I'd certainly try the taster edition (comes with free local map of your choice) to get a good comparison between the two. In fact, it would sure be nice if somebody reviewed the two and posted their thoughts
I am not sure about TelNav but TomTom is the BOMB! I truly love it and I did buy the NA/Canada map after using the free one.

I have used them both... telenav works great, and its really cool that you can set up your destinations online and the new version does traffic, and it runs very well on the Kaiser.... HOWEVER what i dont like about telenav is that is has to download while you are on the move... I would hate to travel out of a service area and not be able to navigate... This is the reason i will always be loyal to other ones such as tomtom or iguidance, etc... and tomtom works great on the kaiser, i have no complaints with it whatsoever..

After reading your response above, I went to the TomTom site and from what I could find, they do not support the HTC 8925 - something to do with their relationship with HTC which limits their use on only certain HTC devices.
My specific question for those Tilt owners who are using TomTom is - does it use the built in GPS receiver or is TomTom calculating position by triangulating with cell towers (or something like that)?

Thanks. Yes - I had seen that thread but I wasn't sure after reading it that TomTom actually worked on the Tilt without any hacks.
I'm not too satisfied with Telenav and wouldn't mind installing TomTom to test it. Is there a way to do so with out first signing up - like a trial period? I wouldn't mind issuing a thread about the difference between the two (I also have an in-dash unit so I can compare the functionality of PDA GPS to in-dash units as well).

okay, to inquire further, I called Tom Tom and found that:
1. They do not "specifically" support the AT&T tilt (HTC8925). They do show support for the HTC TyTN II surprisingly. I guess I have to assume that if they support the other HTC, their software will function on the AT&T tilt.
2. unfortunately, they do not have a trial period so there is no way of testing their software directly. I guess the only way to do so is to install the Tom Tom File mentioned earlier.
from the previous post I guess it is possible to have both the Telenav software and the TomTom software on the phone without any problem. I guess I will have to check that.
You can load the teaser version (this is their trial version btw) to test w/o issues (there's a link to it on page 1 of my ROM thread: click "kaiser ROM" on my sig to go there). Their trial software doesn't expire; rather it limits the geographical area that the software will function by virtue of the installed maps. In this vein, it will allow you to download a map of your local area and you can play with it. All features such as traffic updates are fully functional. If you like the software, then merely purchase the full America/Canada map.
To obtain fast fixes, be sure to run QuickGPS on a regular basis (fix data is valid for 7 days). When you're within the valid data timeframe, TomTom will acquire a fix in about 30-45 seconds. This is one of the properties of aGPS by the way: obtaining initial position OTA.
ok... let me answer some of this to give you a clearer picture, if not there will be some n00b bashing that will go on and i would like to prevent that...
TomTom will work fine with no hacks on the tilt.
The tilt, tytn II, kaiser, etc are all the same device.
They dont claim support on the tilt because of AT&T exclusive relationship with telenav.
Now this i could be wrong on but you should be able to install the TOMTOM taster file which is located in this forum and on our FTP server and when it goes to load a map will give you the button for voucher, this should let you download 1 free city map.
HOWEVER what i dont like about telenav is that is has to download while you are on the move... I would hate to travel out of a service area and not be able to navigate...
I have traveled out of coverage and it still worked. it just didn't give turn by turn voice but it still tracked via the gps on the maps and showed were i was going. i guess you would have to loos cell service for a long time for it to take effect. I to also like you can go on the web real quick and enter in an address and just go. thats nice when you have multiple places to go that day and you just type them all in make things easy when you are in sales driving everywhere. I hope soon they will have the teletraffic for the kaiser to get the traffic updates.
i don't have Tom Tom but i'm happy with Telenav. you can get a 1yr subscription for $99. another Telenav advantage is that maps are updated regularly. with Tom Tom you have to wait for next software version.

you must live within the city or at least very near to it. Traffic updates really don't mean much to people outside of big cities since nobody is keeping track of the traffic situations on urban roads. I once subscribed to XM traffic and found that it was only useful in and around Philadelphia (I live 35 miles southwest of Philadelphia). I am finding the same thing true with Telenav.

Through conversations with a few folks I've learned that TomTom is apparently contemplating ceasing any further development on any products for PDA's. They are apparently no longer supporting Nav6 nor will they provide any further map/poi updates for Nav6. They had apparently begun development of Nav7/8 but have suspended that project until a go/no decision is made.
This decision is apparently being driven primarily by significant bootlegging of maps (their primary source of income with Nav software).
I have gotten this info second-hand, but believe it is reliable. Has anyone else heard anything along these lines?

I had to call them to help me activate my maps on my fourth replacement tilt. In the course of conversation, I asked about new maps. And the answer was there were new maps but not for navigator 6....they were developing navigator 7 and were in the process of determining "viability." When I asked if that meant they were thinking of discontinuing it, he backpedaled and said they just want to make sure that everything works with such a wide variety of devices to support - palm, symbian, windows mobile.
With what you heard, it sounds like it could be a possibilty. Shame. It's a good program...
I agree, it's an excellent program and I get a lot of good use out of it, I hope they continue to upgrade and improve it. The ONLY thing I don't like about TomTom Navigator 6 is that it doesn't have Text to Speech, it would be nice to hear "turn right on Yuba Street then turn right on California Street" instead of just "Turn right then turn right".

They released new maps this past week for the Nav6 as well as all their other products.
Until you see this on their web site it is just someone's rumor.

Do you know if those truly are new maps? After installing TT on my Kais and downloading the free map for my metro area 5 days ago I've found a large number of outdated things including 1 year old streets not in TT and POI's 1 to 4 years out of date. I'd think that they'd want the map they give you for a trial to get you to purchase from them would be the most up to date.
Can anyone tell what the exact version is of the new maps? From what I can read about them is that they are version 6.75 but they done give the build number. I already have version 6.75.1409. Just wanting to know if they really are newer maps.

Very powerful - search for "KFC" and it will find all the nearest with clickable links to websites, phone numbers, driving directions from current position, from an input address from a contact etc. Everything you could want when you need to top up on Kentucky Fried Chipmunks.....or whatever you need to find.
Of course as it is "live" and downloads maps on the fly you better have an unlimited data plan. But it is cool driving along in Satellite View!
HINT - the CAB is not seperately downloadable. You have to download it direct to your PDA - last time I did it was about 1.5Mb. Though once you have the CAB in memory you can back it up to your PC.

The one big disadvantage of google maps is that it DOES require that live connection. If you are in a poor reception - or no reception area - it is hard to get those directions. For me, i would rather have it sitting on my device and just be dependent on the satellites....instead of BOTH satellite and cell tower.
I don't think the have stoped developing v7 because the new HTC Daimond comes with v7 intergrated in the rom. This can be found in several artical on XDA.
There is much to like about google maps. As you mentioned, they are constantly updated, fairly accurate, have tons of useful info, allow you to click on POI's for info, to call POI, or link to POI website.
Unfortunately it doesn't have turn-by-turn capabilities (at least that I've ever seen) or allow you to keep maps on your device (besides costly when roaming, I seem to always find areas without cell service). It doesn't determine your direction of travel with an arrow, only shows a dot. These are the biggies. Some of the route planning and other things that TT or Garmin have are also useful but missing from Goog. Google's love of learning anything and everything about people for their own profit is also a bit disconcerting. Them knowing where I've been, where I am, and where I'm going is perhaps too much.
Telenav only works in the US, Garmin is coming out with their own phone to avoid the pirated maps/revenue issue...

Google does not offer voice guidance or turn-by-turn maps. However, Google does offer a traffic overlay which is free (TomTom charges) and does not require updates.
Oddly, it seems to take TomTom about 10 minutes or so to get a GPS lock. Google (with GPS turned on) seems to take less than a minute. I have never understood that

I called and the 1409 is the latest version of the map.
Tech support indicates that they have no plans to discontinue the Nav6.

Mine (Kaiser w/ TT) almost always gets GPS lock within about 30 seconds of starting the TT app. This is in US including MN, CA, NY, and GA.

Yep, same here, TomTom has a lock and is showing my location in at most 60s when I turn it on while driving. If I'm sitting still, it's less than that.
The Tilt does not seem to have much luck getting a signal when shielded from the sky, however.. Even sitting in a restaurant near a window I've found it completely unable to get a signal but it locked on in <15s when outside. I always mount my Tilt on my 'grip' mount on my dashboard so it has a reasonable view of the sky.

Do you have aGPS enabled? That will enable you to get a lock even inside of buildings, or anywhere that has little or no view of the sky.
I hope they do move to navigator 7 at some point as I like the idea of things like map share that are avaliable on the go 720 tomtom models.

i get a quick lock on tomtom, but poor refresh updates from the GPS chip, so its laggy as.
TOMTOM also dont support the kaiser, TYTN II, or the OEM Branded ones, so getting support is a pain (even though my bloody phone came with tomtom on a CD!)
My GPS Reception jumps all over the place too. very unreliable.
I have Google and WLS installed on my tilt, and i do like them. However, what options do i have for a GPS software that provides voice directions?
Not wanting to spend a bunch of money here, but if my options are limited, i would still like to hear them.

I have tried TomTom V6 and V7 and also I-Go8.
All 3 are good products and these are my own 'key points':
TT6=Legal,out of date maps and won't get better.
TT7=Legally grey for the app ,but you can buy legal maps-which is what TomTom have always charged for-modern maps (01.08 if V7.20) and is likely to be so for a while yet.
I-Go8=Legal (but you may have to import it as it still is like hens teeth here)
,modern maps (01.08),likely to be supported.
TomTom (both)-basic interface,runs fast on older PDA (WM2003+),good routing.Instruction format=in 100m turn lef,turn left (at exactly the correct time),instructions at roundabouts are concise.
I-Go-'prettier' interface and possibly a little more powerful,3d landscape can be of use but 3d buildings are in my opinion a gimmick,a little slow on less powerful PDA,sound routing,shows the next 2 manoevers,with 3rd party skins easy to modify options.Instuction format=in 100m take the 3rd left,take the 3rd left about 30m from turn (this is the last instruction),display lags by about 1 second so this is logical.Instructions as you approach roundabouts are in my opinion a little verbose
Choices-I keep swapping between the two as they are both strong products and I can't really decide which is 'better'
Do they work-Yes
Are they up to date-tt6,no-tt7 yes,and I-go yes

Nobody can give you a definitive answer on the 'best' software,so pay your money and learn to live with the foibles these programs all have.

okay, i don't have a cd, but i do have North America maps which is what i want. So, that leads me to my question, is there some generic installer that gets the tomtom shell on the tilt phone?
I tried a few on the wiki page, and when i truy to install the exe, i get a message on the phone saying Incorrect Rom. So, i assume i need a cooked ROM on my phone to install the ones on the wiki.
I checked tomtom website, and see nothing.

I have just moved over from the HTC Kaiser (Vario 3) to the G1 and I love everything abotu the G1 the only thing it is missing is decent turn by turn navigation.
I had tomtom on my Kaiser and am looking for something similar for the G1,
I found this link demoing CoPilot 7 but it doesnt look to be avalable to the public as I cannot find anywhere to buy it from. and on the CoPilot website it doesnt list the G1 as a compatible phone.

I found and downloaded AndNav 2 and found that it wasnt very good the display is to small and i cant get used to the interface.
lastly I found TeleNav but ind $10 a month a little bit of a rip off, i would rather something you pay a 1 off fee like you would with a tomtom and then update the maps at a cost.

i move from a htc 3300 (artemis) with tom tom, i gave it away in exchange for the Dream, but im a little regret about this, because im always lost the google maps show me in the map but dont tell where to turn. Wisepilot is expensive and the andnav2 is very very limited. I have a nav4all but dont show the map and is anoying and confusing.
So i need this for navigate in work and i dont have one Turn to Turn GPS like the old Tom Tom in htc Artemis.
Anyone have a solution?

I think i have found the app for me, Its a free download from the market place and its called wisepilot. its a very profesional GUI and looks like it works very well and the instructions seem clear( havent road tested it yet)
The only issue i see is that it says that its a free trial and it shoudl expire after 5 days and then to renew its 99Euro per year which seems expencive considering i can buy a tomtom for around that much and i dont have to subscribe to anything.
The only issue i have with wisepilot is that it downloads the map squares from a server rather than having them on a SD card.
Agghh FFS What is the point of a navigation system that doesnt work outside of GPRS coverage

just a warning about telenav, if you try to cancel they wont do it. you need to call in like 3 or 4 times to confirm they canceled, and they will strait lie to you about calling in and cancelling.

For the longest time I have been TomTom's #1 Supporter it seems... I always reccomend it to anyone who was willing to listen... I live in the Milwaukee area, and there are always construction projects, traffic jams, etc all over the place. TomTom was great because I could get traffic updates for under $30/yr.. It was a price I could justify spending each month onto of what I already paid for the software and phone service.
My annual subscription because due a few weeks ago... and I was shocked that it went from abotu $2/mo to $10/mo... I called a rep and they explained to me that it was because now when you subscribe to traffic, you get the entire "TomTom Live" package which includes things like gas prices, weather, etc... Seeing as I have the weather tab on my phone, and know how to check gad prices outside of TomTom, I explained that I really only wanted the traffic... Unfortunatly he explained there is no way to purchase it by itself anymore.... and I can't justify spending $120/yr for the traffic...
I decided to try out some of the other GPS programs... I tried many out back when I first decided on TomTom a few years ago... and many of them have come a long ways.... the one the suprised me the most was the one built in Bing.... It is 100% free, takes up very little space on my device (where my TomTom Map takes up over 1gb), and offers FREE traffic.. Don;t get me wrong, the interface is not as good as TomTom.. but for what it offers, it is great! I do the hybrid overlap map that is the roads along with the areal view from sat images... It loaded the map on the fly as I was driving, even at highway speeds... Its traffic information was accurate.. and its directions were good as well...
There were a few draw backs though... It always has "North" on the top of the screen.. so when I was physicalyl headign south, the image looked "upside down" compaired to how I was used to TomTom looking... And of course there was no C3PO guiding my turns with his voice.. "Depart Master" ..... But over all, I would give it a 7/10 when I combine that it was accurate, takes up almost no space on my SD card, live traffic and other features, and the photo overlays is a cool feature...
So, if you are like me and can no longer afford/justify paying TomTom their new rates, give Bing a shot... If they can work out the few things here I mentioned, I bet it can become a first rate GPS program.
