I have been reading through a bunch of things throughout this forum about this phone.. i plan on buying it later this week... and I was wondering if anyone could point me in good directions right off the start..
like...
what's the first couple things I should do with my phone? i hear of the extra software that slows it down and stuff...
should i update rom.. etc. things to do. Things that make device "BETTER" for you guys.. like faster.. more usable... more effective.
ps: nothing that voids the warranty... at least for first couple months i want to have warranty.
thanks in advance!

humm, lets see new user, first post, ill try to be nice. Its really aggravating reading redundant threads. The questions you are asking have been discussed time and time again.
This device is great, in my opinion, i came from a iphone (and it sucked ass) this phone has every option you want in a winmo device. buy the phone based on what YOU READ. The choice is yours the best way to get a unbiased opinion is to spend a couple of hours reading about the device.
Im not trying to be a prick. but understand were we are comming from, most of us did read ALOT about this device to make up our mind. You need to do the same. Don't ask the question, instead search for the answer, im sure its there.
It's a great device, just like KD8DNS said,
I got mine little over two months ago and some of the stuff I've done include:
+ Simple tweaks such as the IE Explorer Scroll Fix
+ Remap buttons (including the PPT for press and hold)
+ Got WarCraft II, Doom II, a Play Station Emulator and Duke Nukem 3D running stable and above all playable.
+ SNES/NES/GB Emulators
+ Got my favorite organization packages: SBSH PocketBreeze, SBSH Weather, PocketPlus
+ Getting the proper GPS app and maps
+ The A2DP Bluetooth Stereo Audio Push is a dream (got myself a Sony MX BT-2500, so I stream stereo music in my car), the Motorolla S9 Headset works great too!
There is a lot you can do with this device, it is so versatile the possibilities are really endless. Freeware, Shareware, software all over the place.
If you wish to experiment more with it try different cooked roms, I have not done it myself, but I hear it's a hell of a lot fun =)
Enjoy your new phone!

It just amazes me that people are able to get things like Warcraft, Doom or even a Playstation (!!) emulator working on the Kaiser!
Mine should be in the mail tomorrow, and I'm coming from the Sprint Mogul (to T-Mobile and slower network speeds, unfortunately) and I'm really looking forward to the upgrade (in phones, at least )

I'm not sure how you can make it better and faster without voiding the warranty by flashing, but you can alway revert back to the original rom.
"Q: Does flashing affect the warranty of my device?
A: Yes, but, as long as your device can be flashed again, you will find some help at jcespi2005's thread where you can find dumped original ROMs."
To make your phone better your going to need to flash your phone with some good roms and radios. Look at peoples signatures and try to see what people are using. Other than that, the best thing you can do for you and your phone is read the wiki's, read the stickies, and read the search results. There is a 99% chance someone has already asked the question and a solution provided. That's how it is in my case anyway.

by the way , how many fps you got on SNES/NES/GB, Sega ,Neogeo or CPS games on your kaiser? Is it playable but with only less than 10Fps?
Let me start by saying that I enjoy my Tilt very much and play, fiddle, and tinker with it often. When I bought my first Tilt 2 months ago I was very excited because prior to that I only had a $50 Sony/Ericson which didn't do much other than annoy me often. 4.5 days later I received my first Red Light of Death when I left the phone charging overnight on the standard charger. A little bummed out I was able to exchange the phone for a new one.
Setting up my second Tilt was exciting all over again and sense of Deja Vu washed over me. It seems, however, that I wasn't too far off the mark when 4.5 days later I received the Red Light of Death again.
Things seem to be going well with my third Tilt, but the majority of the time I turn the phone completely off while it is charging. I was a little upset to find out about some of its performance issues and lack of drivers for its graphics hardware, but even though I don't really play games with it I do use it to watch videos.
What I have found as far as video is concerned is that for optimal performance the video should first be converted down to mobile size. The DivX converter is nice for that because it has a mobile setting and is simply drag, drop, convert. The only problem I have found is that some of the converted videos are out of sync with the associated audio. The DivX player will only allow you offset the A/V sync issue +/-2.5 seconds. The CoreMedia player has excellent performance, good features, and will allow you to set any offset value.
I could go on, but I won't...for now.

SNES varies a lot depending on the game. For Example I get from 55 to 60/60 fps on Super Mario World, but 45 to 50 /60 on Star Fox and a steady-ish 53 on Megaman X2. (all with sound off, haven't played much with sound options, but regularly "sound on" makes most games unplayable)
NES Games give me full 60/60 on all games with sound on.
I don't know where The Warcraft Port marks fps, but the game is surprisingly smooth.
The Duke Nukem and Doom II give me from high 30s to mid/high 40s fps, which is pretty playable on easy levels with no cheats. These too are surprisingly responsive and smooth even with fxsound on, no music (this is achieved with the proper cache... and the sound lags every now and then, but not a huge deal).
No overclocking of any sort. But no other apps or wireless connections other than the phone were enabled when I got those numbers.
I've noticed the Warcraft and Duke drain the battery pretty quick. I haven't had a chance to fully test it. I will update on this sometime after my last midterms this thursday :S.

WOW awesome, kaiser can run SNES emulator with 50 over FPS , i can't wait to get a kaiser for testing....
by the way , any FPS improve compare to the new rom with old rom? Do u think will the coming new rom improve the FPS of emulator again?
Have u try CPS 2 games such as street fighter Zero 2, Marver VS Street Fighter ,Gigawing, Neogeo games such as Metal Slug and etc..
thanks for everyone's input. I have spent probably like 10 hours reading about this phone in the past 2 weeks.. and I'm liking it.. but only one question comes to mind....
it was released in september/october last year...
i was wondering if ANYONE knew of any new releases of att phones *mainly smartphones/pdas* that are coming out within the next month or so?
because i don't want to buy this phone today... and 2 weeks from now say the "HTC 9125" comes out or something like that.
so do any of you guys know if any new phones are said to be released??? and their dates?
thanks.
The only possible one would be the SonyEricsson Xperia X1, which is basically going to be the HTC TyTn III. But you have several months before that will be out. If you can wait, you might consider it ... it's got everything the Tilt has, plus a Wide VGA (800x480) screen.

Should I?
I just bought the iPhone a couple of days ago, and I am kind of disappointed. It lacks too many things to list. I know that sdk is supposed to be released in February, but I just don't think it can compare to the Tilt.
I will be using the phone to watch movies on, as I work nights, and that will help, so does the Tilt handle movies as well as the iPhone? I am not concerned with the slightly smaller screen size.
Since the Tilt is basically a mini computer, I know the abilities are endless, I am fairly decent in getting around a pc, plus the internet is a great help, but how hard is it to get rid of all the bloated crap at&t slaps on the phone?
I really like the iPhone's looks, and ease of use etc...but it just seems like it could be so much more, and I am stuck with at&t for another 2 years now, so I am just wondering should I switch to the Tilt before it's too late...
Thanks for any input!!
Michael
If you are going to use the tilt to watch movies... you shall be disappointed... read the various threads on video driver issue... it shall answer a lot of questions...
As far as movies go, I'd say it really depends on your standards of what quality a movie should be when viewed on a phone. What I mean is, I have seen many complaints of the video drivers on the Tilt. I think these must be from people who require/expect excellent quality video.
To me, movies look great on the Tilt, if you take into account, that this is a phone, not your 42" hdtv lcd, lol. They are definitely good enough to view, and pass time. Of course, again, standards of these things are so subjective, but this is just my 2 cents.
So, if you are looking to enjoy a good movie, in decent quality, then the Tilt is great, if you are looking for an amazing viewing experience, worthy of a videophile, then the Tilt will disappoint. From what I have heard, the iPhone is much better for video, although I have not verified this.
One of the greatest things about the tilt is the community you get here on xda-developers, meaning if you are ever stuck with something, these guys can (and will) help.
However, just using a tilt to watch movies is, imho, a bit of a waste. You may as well buy a cheap PDA if thats all you want. The tilt is an amazing device, full of features. And not using them would be doing the phone injustice.
Therefore, if you want a device which will: manage your photo/music/video album, navigate you, make video calls, make phone calls, send text's/emails, play games on, browse the net on, allow you to show off , get the tilt. If you want a device that will just let you play music and watch video's, stick with the jesusphone.
Edit: Oh by the way, I agree with cincy, i think movie's look spot on on the tilt.
Well to first clear up the confusion, I don't want it just to watch movies on lol...I just meant is it able to watch movies, because I work nights, and need something to pass the time with, ie watching a movie. That is just the only thing I am concerned with, I am aware of all of the other features the Tilt has to offer, and in my opinion it is in a class of it's own compared to the iPhone. I just wanted to make sure it could also play movies, so that I can combine all the features too. My other main concern is my wife's Pantech Duo, seems to me rather slow and bloated, which is what I am wondering about the Tilt. I am decent with PC's, but there are still many things I don't know, and just wanted to find out how easy it would be to clean it up to make it run more efficient.
Yes this forum is great, Apple has nothing this nice to help lol...Thanks for the replies, I have pretty much made up my mind to take the iPhone back and get the Tilt, so you shall be hearing from me again lol, for lot's of help making it work well
Well...
If you like the GUI there is an app/skin/theme for winDOS Mobile 5/6 that makes the GUI look like that of the iPhones.
http://www.iphonetheme4ppc.com/guide_QVGA/
There you go, and now that ive found it...
Im gonna install it myself!
I am an Apple MacBook pro user and love many of apples products... And i think the compatibility of the iphone and MacBook would be fantastic!
However I still prefer my Kaiser because it offers so much and isn't anywhere near as claustrophobic as the iphone with its "Apple Bluetooth" and requirement for itunes to do anything.
Dont get me wrong the iphone is nice but its a fashionable piece of Eye Candy and the Kaiser is a useful peice of engineering.
MM
PS I watch stuff on my Kaiser and playback is fine as far as i see, but there are many who loath HTC for the video drivers.
i watch movies via tcpmp during plane trips and enjoy it!

I have both. iPhone for my wife, Tilt for me. The video playback is night and day. I have yet to find any settings that work acceptably on the Tilt. If this is an important feature, you should look elsewhere because even if you are not a "videophile", the video is sadly disappointing.

And BTW, the web browsing is also WAY better. Again, there is just no comparison, even with Opera.
To me, the biggests problem with the iPhone is lack of 3G, no A2DP, and poor poor PIM syncing and no GPS. Strengths, video playback, multimedia syncing, speaker playback (the speakers although small, are actually quite passable and stereo), photo viewing and web browsing.
I don't play many games, but I would consider it a strength of the iPhone. Not sure about the Tilt.
As for 3rd party apps, my (very personal) opinion is there are very few "must have" apps and the one's I use on the Tilt (Resco, ImClose, AEBPlus) are all about usability and do not really apply to the iPhone. A BIG factor here is that most of the built in MS Apps basically $uck, like the photo viewer, file manager, media player, web browser, so it is almost a must to have the option to install decent apps to "replace" the built in ones. In this way, I think HTC is really doing well in mitigating the poor usability of the MS Apps. Like being able to navigate a playlist with a hardware button? No can do with Windows Media Player mobile. WTF???
You can see this even with the HTC shipped products. Their stuff is better that MS too, and many people come here to look for the HTC programs, many even cook them into ROMS.
So now I have to have room for two apps that do the same thing and it basically clutters up my device. Sort of like the 4 remotes I have to use just to watch TV at home. To me this is poor implementation.
So I am probably in the monority here, but once the iPhone supports GPS, a decent turn by turn navigation program like Tom Tom/ iGo and A2DP, and better syncing, I will be dumping my Tilt (much the same way as I have dumped MS Windows). I expect most of these features will come by the end of 2008.

Probably not a good idea to log into a forum and show disrespect to it's other members.
As for your question, to view movies I simply use TCPMP with a few codecs (which I can't remember the names of, sorry) and videos work like a charm.
I also use Kingdia Video Converter to convert my movies to .avi (if they're not .avi already), then use Ashampoo Movie Shrink & Burn to compress the movie to QVGA size. Brilliant Quality, small File size, win win win!
imo, iPhone is a joke.

You clearly have not played with one much. The iPhone is smaller, lighter, thinner, and much more aesthetically appealing than the Tilt. In February, Apple is releasing SDK for third party Apps, and a GPS attachment (here: http://www.iphoneatlas.com/2007/12/17/gps-add-on-for-the-iphone-demonstrated-to-ship-in-february/
is supposed to be in the works as well. And I suppose not unlike the Tilt, I could always Jailbreak my iPhone, and put homebrew on it, but the iPhone was designed to be a lot harder to take care of if something goes wrong, like the battery not taking a charge any more, you would have to send it in to Apple, but you couldn't because of breaking the warranty. At least with the Tilt, you can put back what you have done to at least get repairs lol....

By community I mean the forum in general. It is the method of communication I am speaking to not the individual members. I fully realize many people have contributed lots of work and advice, and I try to do the same when I am able, but by nature of this being an open ended forum, you don't always find answers to your questions. It can be hit or miss. It just depends sometimes if someone happens to see your post and have an answer. How is that disrespectful?
Back on point, I think this forum is helpful in learning about Windows Mobile products and sometimes getting specific questions answered. This is something also available via Apple, in addition to dedicated product support, which both Apple and HTC offer. If I were considering it as a factor in buying a product, I would score one for the Tilt, as I think this forum is better than the Apple forum, but I would score one for Apple as well because I think their dedicated support is better (stateside anyway, plus it helps I have both an official and unofficial store near me and can walk in and talk to a person).
But are you also sure there isn't another "undocumented" forum much like this one for the Apple products, because BTW HTC also has a forum which leaves a lot to be desired.

Well I love PPC, but obviously you must not have owned an iPhone. I switched back to Windows Mobile for technical reasons, but I have to say we're far away from the iPhone UI. PointUI has a long way to go, everything in the iPhone is connected.
I still surf with Safari, when I have free time, and sitting in front of the TV at home.
lol I just came back from the iphone myself.
Like you, I wanted it for video playback. The screen is great and video playback was smooth.
But there were too many basic things that you couldn't do even with jailbreaking the phone that just left me annoyed.
if you don't mind re-encoding your video the tilt is fine. I re-encoded all my videos to slightly smaller res and put it into an mp4 container and played it on coreplayer. Video Playback is smooth, but it could be smoother with better driver support. But I'm not complaining.
To me, the Tilt spins circles around the iphone.

Not sure how far your computer skills go but trust me, the iPhone is more of a computer than the HTC TyTN II.
You seem to miss the point of the iPhone (the ingenius GUI/OS/touch operation), forget about the crappy EDGE and the lousy camera, this is not why people buy the iPhone.
Watching movies/listening to music is more fun with the iPhone due to the fantastic display quality.
Right now, I'm using three phones: the iPhone (hacked, has more than two dozends of third party apps installed and works like a charm), the HTC TyTN II (business stuff) and the Nokia N95 8GB (family vacations, leisure time).
My favourite is still the iPhone but I wish Apple would have offered it with UMTS/HSDPA from the start.

Only when it comes to third party apps and especially data connections.
Otherwise, the iPhone is by far superior. Of course if you don't mind the sluggish GUI operation of the TyTN II, not even mentioning the ridiculous touch screen operation HTC wants to sell us as innovative, the TyTN II really is a great phone. Don't get me wrong: the iPhone lacks a lot of features but using it on a daily basis as my main phone, I like it much more than the TyTN II or the Nokia N95 8GB. I won't even mention the Nokia E90 which sleeps well in an office drawer since I got the iPhone.
The iPhone is no business phone though, no blackberry support, MS Exchange support is half-baked at best and although the mail application is the best I've ever seen on a phone, the PIM capability is somehow limited compared to other "smartphones".
There is however a catch regarding the iPhone: if you're not a regular and enthusiastic iTunes customer, the iPhone may not satisfy you completely.
The ingenius thing about the iPhone is the easy operation and for the first time finally a satisfying touch control operation.

Expert speaking... *LOL*
I'm very much interested in buying this device, but after reading all the threads here and Petition...I'm totally confused.
Can anyone please sum it up ? whats going on? Should i buy it or not? Video playback issue is been solved or not?
I don't have any other device in my mind with the same specifications..
Please help me out.
Yeah im debating whether i should keep mine or not.. Seems like this video driver thing wont ever get resolved by HTC, who knows? .. Maybe when another phone that has the same chipsets releases, a developer from XDA can extract some stuff from there.. but it looks like its not going to be any time soon. Sorry for being pessimistic but I feel like i am being realistic here. HTC has no desire to fix a phone thats been out for some time now when by next year there will be an upgraded version of the phone.
Only question is... What phone should i swap it for? the Iphone? blahhhh....
Definately get it, although there are a few small nags with it, such as the video problem its still a fantastic device and just so much better than anything else out there IMO.
The GPS is fantastic, its very fast and very stable with the Cooked ROM such as Schaps or duttys. I have never had it crash on me yet and ive owned it over 2 months now. Ive only ever had to reset for planned things such as program installs etc.
Overall its a really superb device and i cant recommend it enough!
+1. Best phone I've ever used.
I love my TyTN II/Tilt.
I like my Kaiser but if you dont need GPS then you why not think about a Hermes? i personally like it a whole load better because there is a lot bigger mod scene with the Hermes. Also a slight drawback at the min is lack of sim unlock for the Kaiser so am using it as my second back up phone. My oppinions may change mind once i get it unlocked and use it more. will keep you posted
sean pint- just goto ebay and search for kaiser/tilt unlock. Once you find a seller make sure he has good feedback and buy it. I got mine for 15 dollars. Ive heard of people paying 10. It took about 6 hours for the seller to email me the unlock code. Simple as that. Good luck!!
I searched and researched for 6 months before buying my TyTN II. I love it. Sure the video driver issue is frustrating but you know what? Even with that issue its the best PDA/Phone available.
I have had mine for almost 2 months and have never had a lockup or any other problem that made me reset it.
I love mine and wouldn't trade it for anything.
If you do decide not to get it, I will echo the suggestion made earlier to get a Hermes. There is A LOT available for that device too.... but for me the Kaiser is the kit to get.
PS: The phone in my experience is OUTSTANDING.
Thanks for the Feedback guys....
Can anyone elaborate more? like what kind of issue one can face with video playback? Like does it really lag bad ? or it just bearable? Or video is just lagging in one specific format?
Does this video issue get solved if i change to third party firmware?

I would not buy this device again. It might look cool but it can give you too many frustrations. My TyTN I is infinitely more reliable.
If you are a very easy-going rich individual or a gadget freak that just has to buy this cool looking device, you should get it. It looks good, the GPS works well, wireless, etc, all good.
Here's what NOT to expect though:
1. Good camera/video recording quality
2. Anything close to acceptable video playback quality
3. 3d acceleration if you play games
4.Smooth browsing with Pocket Internet Explorer
5. Anything close to an acceptable customer service
You might also get other problems. My Kaiser for instance doesn't register fast consecutive keystrokes of the same letter. So I open PIE, I type www.google.com and it comes out as ww.gogle.com (Before anyone tells me to change the Up/Down key delay in the settings, I've already done that and the problem is always there). It's sooo much fun getting the cursor back there to correct it!!!
Browse the forums, you'll get an idea of how many bad surprises the Kaiser might hold for you, thanks to the lack of quality control by HTC. Sorry to disappoint you but if stability is your concern, don't listen to the voices luring you to buy this thing.

I have entered in bold my views on the above posters comments.
Here's what NOT to expect though:
1. Good camera/video recording quality
There is an art to getting very acceptable quality with the camera. So good quality is possible and takes better semi-light pictures than TyTn I - see here: http://www.pocketables.net/2007/12/california-thro.html
2. Anything close to acceptable video playback quality
My problems were solved via the latest Core Player. You just need to get the settings right and most videos are fine.
3. 3d acceleration if you play games
Don't use that much though my Duke Nukem is working just fine!!
4.Smooth browsing with Pocket Internet Explorer
There is a very easy fix in CAB form available for the PIE problem that takes less than 10 minutes to solve.
5. Anything close to an acceptable customer service
Never had any need for it so I cannot comment on this.
Back to me again!!
I use both TyTn I and TyTn II. My TyTn II a non branded vHTC device was smooth, fast and usable straight from the box. Video has been sorted by Core Player (latest). Yes the camera takes practice and you need to understand the auto focus (or else you'll get fuzzy pics - but once you get the hang of it it's better than TyTn I)
I was re-setting my TyTn I every two weeks. I have yet to crash my Kaiser and only soft reset after application installation if necessary. I have NEVER had to hard reset the device in several months of ownership.
I would advise against branded devices with loads of bloatware that can cause all sorts of slow downs on any device.
This is the first device I have been able to accept without endless mods and tweaks just to get in semi acceptable. Of course I have done several tweaks, but that's 'cos I enjoy doing it!!
To be honest, my general view is that folk have fewer issues with the Kaiser than the TyTn I and certainly fewer alignment and screen problems. Hanging and freezing were common on TyTn I, I hardly see that on the Kaiser and when it does it seems that if you leave it for a couple of minutes it sorts itself ou rather than needing a soft reset.
YES, if you read here or any of the Fora, you will see folk talking about nothing but problems. This is a FALSE picture - of course folk post their problems, that's what the forum is for!!
I have been around here since before the TyTn I and on balance I would not hesitate in opting for the Kaiser, though I still like the TyTn I Hermes as a very capable device - but it needs love and a lot of tweaks!!
Mike
Thanks for the input guys.
But seriously if you are buying a device by keeping in mind that it will run each and everything which you throw on it, than i think no one will buy this device...Its not about rich and all...I'll be getting this device as my primary fone and it will be performing everywork, from excel to presentation...Emails/browsing.
But after reading all the reviews and all its totally holding me back to get this device. I was more inclined to "HTC Advantage" but due to its size its holding me back..i just can't carry that brick everywhere with me..where as TytnII was the perfect for me...but its drivers are making major issue here.
I don't want to go with TytnI....i want to stick to the latest phone because in few months or so new WM 7 will be launching soon ..and when WM 7 going to Launch than no one will give a flying**** to tytnI ....
What i'm looking in device is:
Sliding QWERTY keyboard
GPS
Fast Processor above 500Mhz
I never thought to look on ebay actually. Is it the same system to unlock a tilt aswell as a vario III. just thinking because the tilt is american and the Vario III is on T-Mobile in the uk. Anyone recomend a good seller on ebay?
al just thought i would try a virgin sim and that works but when i put my 3 sim in it says its locked. rather strange
I have been absolutely thrilled with my Kaiser II so far. It does everything I could possibly want!. I will list here all the wicked awesome things that I do with my Kaiser. There is so much talk of trading in our phones that I wouldn't mind hearing some other positive view points.
I can listen to podcasts / music
I can watch Movies/TV episodes with superb quality using the lastet video player from core.
The amount of games I have an this thing is mind blowing, I think Im around 20-25 kickass games!
Getting on the internet! Ive never owned a labtop or smartphone before so its a luxury for me to browse the net at school.
Reading the news!! I love being able to read RSS streams with my phone.
Reading books! I can read ebooks easily with this!
Im never bored with my Kaiser around!
Sweet =) I'm happy for you, really am (no sarcasm implied).
I love it too actually... for some reason none of my previous PDAs (casiopeia, ipaq, wizard..) interested me enough to sit all day long with them trying different things. Kaiser is just... so ... I dunno, advanced? complex? with all its little problems and cool features.. you keep exploring it and using it, and trying all the different things and combinations.. seeing what it can do and what it can't.. and how to "teach" it to do it..
It's a fun toy, whatever the case =)
I moved to the Tilt from a Palm Treo 650. It was a big advance from the phone I once made love to (treo).
You might bring some sanity to your (soon to be) new friend "bronx"

Same here. I used to have an iPAQ hw6515 and it was a very utilitarian device for me. It kept me organized, and with TomTom it kept me from getting lost (most of the time) The memory was lacking on that device so I never tried anything cool like specialized Today screens, (for fear I might slow it down even more) and with only EDGE data on the iPAQ I only got the information I absolutely needed right now on the internet. With the ample memory, and the blazing fast internet on my Tilt I can do so much more, and I do find myself "playing" with it quite often. Hands down the best phone I've ever had, I even rank my satisfaction with the Tilt higher than what I experienced with my Moto StarTac and V60 in their time. I remember I absolutely loved my StarTac, I felt like Captain Kirk with it... Now with my Tilt I have a converged device. My Communicator and my Tricorder have been merged togeather into this fantastic little device.

Hahaha, yeah!! I remember StarTac... man that was a cool phone at the time!! It couldn't do crap, but it was so cool looking haha... I thought how much better can a cell phone get... lol
Me too!!
I've had various phones in the past, not pda's as they've never really excited me. I tried a SE P990 in a desperate attempt to get some more functionality from my phone...yuk, not a good choice.
I haven't had my Kaiser long but I've not stopped playing with it since it arrived. It's replaced my ipod too now that I have a BT stereo headset (and for the record that works perfectly, I believe many have had problems). Just need to sort out video on it and I don't think I'll ever change it.
Even my misses thinks its a cool phone so thats gotta be saying something.
Just wait until you start flashing it, then the fun really begins
I went along the same path, coming off of a CDMA treo 650. When I first got the treo, that is exactly how I felt about the purchase. It did everything I wanted and more. GPS was huge for me, despite requiring an external BT receiver. Once using a smartphone/convergence device there was no turning back for me.
Upgrading to the tilt just made things sweeter - integrated gps, SDHC support, and the big one that the treo lacked - WIFI.

I had the Captain Kirk-esqe way of opening the StarTac with a flick of my wrist. I was never able to get my V60, V551 or V3 to open like that. The flips were too tight on the other models. So what do you think of my vision of a converged communicator and tricorder being the Tilt?

My first Pocket PC was ipaq 3970 and loved it then when I got my HTC Blue Angel it was like falling in love lol
Wasn't too impressed with M3100 after the BlueAngel but once i got my kaiser all i can say is WOW!

PS Hope you enjoyed my tale of Love lol!
PPS Dont tell my Mrs too be!
I'm another Kaiser's lover!
My first pda was the ipaq 6915 (now in the hands of mum ) and i tought it was almost the top...
but when i tryed the Tytn II, during a trip in Oporto...it was love at first sight!
And now i'm proud to be a Tytn II owner
Here are some more fun things I do (and you can do) with your Kaiser:
Work on word, ppt, excel documents.
Listen to music (MP3 player).
Listen to XMRadio (if you are a subscriber).
Watch TV (using a Slingbox at home).
Use it to navigate (Iuse NAV4ALL).
Display satellite imagery at your location while hiking and off-roading.
Tether your laptop and watch Dr. Who episodes (Netflix) while camping.
Listen to Neal Bortz on AM750 WSB even when a thousand miles from home (webcast).
Store and read PDF manuals for all your toys.
Transfer files between work and home computers.
Get push email from both work and home.
Oh yeah, every now and then people actually call me on the thing!
I could go on and on...

what games do you play?

Apple Newton + Motorola flip + Rand McNally Atlas
Palm Pilots + Nokia phones + Garmin GPS III
HP Windows CE (multiple) + Nokia phones + Garmin GPS III+
Blackberries (multiple) +Garmin GPS V
Palm Treo 700W + Garmin Rino
HTC TyTn + Garmin Rino
HTC Kaiser.....
Only one charger needed for travel and I'm a happy camper. If there's a connection to be had, I can use it. I seldom take my laptop on road trips anymore. The best part is I haven't retyped my phone book in over 20 years! I wish I'd kept all of those old units... It would make a neat display.
I would not over state "the best purchase of my life"
Even though it offers a lot, our hunger for more, better and faster remains.
Yes, despite it's lack of PMM future, I do like this gadget. Do not get me wrong.
I hardly call it a phone, it just does not make coffee yet. it does offer a lot and with all extra applications and games installed, it is truly amazing and versatile.
I have the (bad) habit to "upgrade"each 3 months (at full charge) So, I found out I bought in the last 18 months some 8 phones including iPhone, Samsung I718,Samsung D 900, Motorola Ming, Moto Razr V8, Tytn I, Tytn II, , combined +5000 US...
None could do what the TytnII promissed too.
I bought the Tytn II having a One-fits-all solution and we are near, very near. if the Cam and Vid would have been Ok, I would claimed it was indeed my best purchase (untill now)
does coretcpmcp work with .wmv local video files?
please advise.
tvos
I recently purchased the iPhone after going through 3 tilts since Oct 25(my bday that's why I remember)...I actually like the iPhone UI better...but the programs go to the tilt
well.. i do too.. i love my kaiser =).. my TyTN II overpriced but works great..
games suck.. well.. emulators... (snes, gba,) but for work.. or homework.. or just calling.. its great..
Another Kaiser Lover
Amen, I agree! I believe the Kaisers been the best purchase I've ever done as well, money worth spent! I know people have been complaining about its Video capabilities, and I know they are right, but the kaiser is just so much more than Video!
One quick question though, what do you guys use to convert DVD's into Kaiser friendly formats? And what settings?!
Agree
Yep
I m proud of my kaiser too...
Its do all what i want..except for the camera/video recording...but its works great in outday at daytime...
and its the best my first PPC and the best PPC i ever had...
Hi All,
I currently own an HTC magician. I want a new phone with everything the magician has plus GPS, WIFI, more RAM, and a keyboard. The only phone I found that comes close is the Kaiser, but I've heard such bad things about the video driver problem.
Video is not the biggest issue for me, but should I not buy the phone and support HTC who refuses to cooperate?
Do I have any other options with those specs?
Thanks,
Daniel
I have a Kaiser and I am very happy with it, because I can do so much with it. However if a bit of lag annoys you greatly it may not be for you.
Surur
NO. Wait some time whether the issue get resolved. Its not only the video - the whole phone is slow. You can not browse, rotating you screen. If i make a call with skype, the phone is really very slow and if i slide the keyboard and the screen orientation switches it can take up to minute to be updated - with nothing in background and free mem - only skype running. And until it switches you cant hang up, change the volume...nothing.
To be honest, i regret buying the Kaiser. And if i see how fast a cheap HiPhone can be, omg!
I wonder how HTC can have this on their webpage: More powerful than anything you've seen before, the HTC TyTN II takes communications to the next level.
You have to be blind a live 5years back, for the slogan to be true...
I bought it mainly because of the 3g and wifi and wm6... but there are better solutions then this for 520 euro...
Beware!
wait for kaiser fix
If video is not heavily used, buy it now. I bought it recently and like it very mcuh. But higher performance is still demanded...

get the kaiser...it's no slower then any other wm6 device out there and although yes it would be nice if we could play more games, normal res video runs perfectly fine.

This may all be true if you're still using the stock ROM. There are some really smokin' cooked ROMs out there that really speed things up and make the Kaiser a truly enjoyable device.
One other thing, show me a PC that doesn't slow down once in awhile. That's what defrag is for.

So you equate flashing a cooked ROM with clicking the "Defrag" button? One is a feature built into the operating system, the other can void your warranty and potentially brick your device. They're nowhere near the same thing.
I'm telling everybody I know to avoid HTC like the plague. Not so much directly because of the video issues, but because of their lack of accountability. They deliberately released a crippled device in hopes that nobody would notice, and are now working on some half-assed "fix" only because of the publicity that was generated by the XDA community.
Get one. I was in the same boat hesitating about the drivers. I am glad i made my decision. I upgraded from a 8525. Glad i did i have everything i need in one device. GPS Wifi, processing power. Im not sure what the full potential of this chip is supposed to be but its fast. I actually got mine refurbished from att about a month ago. After using it i ended up buying another one today for my wife and paying full price. Im not disatisfied. Definatly waht i would expect out of a 400 dollar phone.
Like most answers, it lives in the question.
"Because of Video Problems". Do you need or want to view videos not converted to 320x240 resolution? If you do need or want that that from your new expensive mobile device, then pass. ---- NO KAISER FOR YOU!
If you want a snappy interface and quick file browsing experience, then wait for the HTC "fixes". But still forget lag-free video at source resolutions above 320x240. ---------- > Get a Kaiser, and hope you can fix it.
Do you want fancy graphical VGA games or anything 3D? Forget the Kaiser.
Do you want a Windows Mobile 6 device that has real GPS, WiFi, 3G, Edge, 2 cameras (one for video calls, one for decent pics), querty keyboard, and bluetooth? And are able to put up with the device doing NONE of those things particularly well, then ----> Get a Kaiser.
I have a Kaiser. I live through its quirks. Its a fun device depending on your definition of "fun".
Do I regret paying $850+ for my device even knowing I was an early adopter? Yes. The device advertised was not the device delivered.
Would I discourage others from buying it at a $200 USD price point? No.
But then again, its up to you and what you expect from your device.
With Schap's ROM (4.31) and Coreplayer 1.2 i needn't a fix for "video pb"
I don't play 3D game.
Do not listen to most of what the naysayers have to say here. I have an iMate K-Jam and now I have an HTC TyTN II. I have done many comparison tests between the two devices. The TyTN II wins HANDS DOWN!!!
Driver problems? What driver problems? I have yet to find any lag on any video except maybe a bit on the camcorder app, but that's not a big issue. I watch full feature movies on Coreplayer and I have used TCPMP and WM Player with wayyyyyyyy BETTER performance than on my K-Jam!!!
Don't even think about it, go right ahead and buy a TyTN II, you will not regret it. Problem is most people drag these devices through their backsides and then they complain about this and that. They replace roms, install and uninstall all sorts of crap and then they wonder why it's acting up!!!
I have had my TyTN II since the 15th January this year and I have not experienced any of the so-called problems mentioned by some in this forum. OK, the battery does get used up quicker, but then again it has so much packed in and you can get 3000 mAH batteries now!!!

Hey is this a HTC deHey is this a HTC dealer Thread?
The TyTN isn’t a finished device. There are much more bugs and “features” which should be avoid.
1 Video – its really slow. I don’t mind games, I even don’t watch video , because I have other devices for this, but if I wan to scroll the internet page, that’s not the speed I have never seen before! Why takes it so long to switch between portrait and landscape?
And the video from the camera I also pretty slow.
2 Speed – I have used a Fujitsu siemens n560. It was MUCH faster even if it was older and has 64mb ram.
3 The keyboard – this was one of the features why I have chosen tytn. But why they do not think if the do anything. Omg where is the ctrl key? How can you copy and paste? I have always to use the pen for it. No they put rather a key for opening the explorer, which I have used twice so far. And why have I to use the fn key to write a comma? And do you like the style of the keys? Its not even possible to write comfortably the last row of keys if you bent the display? And why are the functions of the keys doubled? Its for disabled people or maybe if you bite off some finger bored from waiting? I would expect that I can configure every key not to have three key for OK two for enter…
And maybe try to write any non-English letter – no we are in the world where no others languages exist.
I tell you, they are not selling what they are telling – What you have been told is not what you get.
What is good – the speed of gps starting, If you use quick gps.
Have a look how fast a under $200 device can be! Put Hiphone in youtube and you will know how fast the screen should react and switch.
Its not only about the damn driver, the parts of the phone are not finished. Not if the producer tells you: It’s the best you can get...

which is why you should try a cooked rom. the internet scrolling thing u mention? its a bug in pie, there;s a fix for that......if you decide to stick to pie, cause lets face it, pie is a pile of **** anyways. try opera mini or mobile. oh and btw......i did get my tilt for under $200
as for the OPs question, there are tons of posts here about the performance of these devices (you might also want to look in the upgrading section to see the performance of cooked roms) and I'm not gonna dd anymore to it. At the end of the day, you are the one who has to make the decision, and you are the one who will be using this device, my advice to you is just choose wisely......i took the jump and got it even after hearing about the video issues, and i never regretted it.
Just get a Kaiser and wait till end of March when the drivers will be released.

If you buy this phone you'll be taking a risk. It may be a small risk depending on what you'll have to pay, but a risk nonetheless of not being satisfied. At least you will have made your choice in good conscience and aware of the situation. Truth is we shouldn't have to compare this device to much older ones and say it's better. It shouldn't warrant a comparison at all but since it does there is obviously a problem. There are those that will tell you their TyTN II is "SUPER ACCEPTABLE!" but that's hardly the point. I didn't buy this thing believing it would have acceptable performance. This device is supposed to kick ass and we believe it would if it used the complete architecture of the chip inside. I got mine for $700 and my plan here on out is to just grin and bear it. There isn't an alternative device available yet and HTC has us over the fence on this thing. The anticipated fix is not going to address our concern of enabling the second core of the chip we paid for. I can confirm for you my experiences with the TyTN II and keep in mind this is before I 'dragged it through my backside' by flashing the ROM. (By the way why in the world would it matter whether it's been flashed or how many times programs have been installed/uninstalled?)
- Video playback is fine if my source is 320 X 240. I have always re-encoded my video anyway in an effort to save space and optimize everything. For this reason I didn't know there was a video playback problem right away.
- The camera is almost unusable. I have turned on the on-screen fps display and in sunlight I get ~18fps, in ambient light make that ~4fps and if it's semi dark forget about it. This effects taking pictures and taking video. The video I shoot ends up looking like a blurry mess and any picture I take better be of a stationary subject or else I will usually miss the shot. Interestingly enough the device takes great photos though.
- Screen rotation is a sore subject. I want the thing to be fluid but instead I have to watch it redraw slowly and in seperate pieces.
- Scrolling - it isn't certain that scrolling problem is a result of the missing drivers. I have to say that scrolling isn't very good but there is a fix on this forum to make it more reasonable.
- GPS works great, I've never had an issue with it although it kills the battery fast. Especially fast when using Google maps or live search because then you have the active GPRS data session combined with the gps.
- Battery life - I have a 1600mAH bat and I have to charge it every day but then again I auto download podcasts and such so I am partially to blame. As I understand it the drivers would increase battery life.
That's about it from me. Sorry this post is so long, let me wrap it up. I don't think anyone can tell you to buy or not to buy. You'll just have to make a decision yourself. At least it will be an informed decision, unlike mine.
word
"Video is not the biggest issue for me, but should I not buy the phone and support HTC who refuses to cooperate?"
With all due respect to all you guys complaining about video drivers.. STFU! already.
No one complained until one geeky ass dude bought it up. I have no problems playing my movies on my device or streaming it via orb.com. I get no lag and for god sakes it's a mobile phone not a computer. It surpasses most devices to date. I have no complaint about this phone. This is like my 40th something phone that I've had being that I work for AT&T and they provide me with devices. When the update comes people will still be *****ing about the video drivers. What exactly are you guys trying to watch? Live video feeds from Mars!?
Seriously get the phone you will not be disappointed. For the record my device does not lag when I slide the screen, etc. I've installed Schaps 4.31 best looking ROM to date. Haven't found another ROM that made me want to change.
even with no video drivers, it's still the best branded phone in the US. theres nothing better. (yet)

Awesome! So it is the official AT&T position that we should all install cooked ROMs on our Tilts? Is that what you tell your customers? And it won't void the warranty? That's fantastic news.
Can you please post your store number and employee ID number so your statement can be confirmed with AT&T corporate? Thanks!
Hi!
I'm thinking about buying a Diamond, but I've got some wuestions about it.
1.) Is it possible to change the default TF3d to something more iPhone-like? Maybe with some SPB application?
(I like iPhone's simplicity, that control with short, little finger-moves, but at general iPhone is too dumb for me.)
2.) Is it possible to turn off threaded SMS-viewing?
Thanks for the replies.
1. yes, seen it on Youtube somewhere...if you search the forum you might find the link ~
2. yes possible and extremely easy -> via advanced config. tool
...now, head out and buy your Diamond jewel
TF3D is just another shell like any SPB-application or other cab.
After all, the Diamond is nothing more then a Windows Mobile fone...

I like that, better than iPhone. I have a HTC P3300, and wan tto upgrade to DImaond. My collegue got az iPhone, it's nice, it's comfortable, it has awesome browser, but it has strict rules, and a little dumb for me. I love when i can change almost everything, when something is real configurable.
Well, as for the browser, there's nothing better than Opera in the mobile world right now.
I'm gonna get flamed for this but you should SERIOUSLY consider your purchase mate. There are many hang-ups, battery life and screen issues being huge ones. I love my Diamond, but perhaps that's because it's just an interim phone until the Sony Xperia 1 comes out some time this month. The Omnia is a worthy alernative if you want to buy a phone now however as it's more of an all-rounder.
However, if battery life and the need to tweak lots doesn't bother you, you couldn't ask for a better phone right now.

consider yourself flamed by a very satisfied diamond user.
hang-ups? BS!! never experienced one, not even when i had the original ROM.
screen issues? BS!!!! (best VGA screen).
battery life? BS!! my battery last 24 hours....more than i need. i do charge my diamond during the night...
tweaks a lot? BS!! used once Shaps Advanced Configuration, export the settings and that's all the tweaks i need. always using the same file.
i played with Omnia today. first i look around to be sure nobody sees me (from the distance looks sooooo much like an iPhone!) then i had to get used to the pixels on the screen (lots of them) and then i tried to put it in shirt pocket...and that was all i need...
I meant hang-ups as in disadvantages. The screen is great, but the build quality seems to be inconsistent. 24hrs battery may not be enough for some.
Just trying to give this guy all the info he needs.

i really want to understand. i am not joking, i am not trying to be sarcastic or a smart ass.
who needs more than 24 hours of battery??
who is far from an electrical socket or his car more than 24 hours??
Look at this

Some want the iphon look's like a Diamond
As your questions have been answered already i won't answer them but i would suggest looking at the Sony Xperia (however it's spelt) depending on your preference but if you really want a Diamond then definately get one
True, 24hrs is sufficient.
But for some, they need/want more battery power to browse internet, watch films/listen to music and use gps. I don't think the Diamond would let you do all that in one day. I'd say it would give you 24hrs if you browsed on the internet moderately and used gps sparingly. Films and music really exhaust battery life...
Don't get me wrong, I love my Diamond. But it's not a multimedia/internet powerhouse in terms of battery. I think people will be dissappointed if they think it is, that's all.

Can you name any handheld device, let alone a mobile phone that will give you over 24 hours of use after watching movies, playing music/games or using gps,I cant think of one.
I usually get around 2-3 days out of my diamond, thats with some web browsing, youtube, calls and texts and maybe a short journey using gps.All i have done is updated to duttys 1.8 rom with the new radio and it made a world of difference.

you forgot boiling eggs and making coffee....
ppl, this is a phone with some extras!. this is not a digital camera, not a personal PC, not an MP3 and movies player, not a GPS dedicated device. it does a little of everything, and it does it well enough.
Ok you know what, read-read my posts - i'm not saying the Diamond is a bad phone. The omnia etc does what the diamond does but has more battery life. So all i'm saying is, if you intend to use the above named features a lot, the Diamond may not be for you. Of course, no phone will last you a long time when using such features.
Jeez, what is it with some of you people?

You forgot to say that Samsung omnia is far bulkier and looks rather ugly.
Right?

And reading around some forums, some peoples omnia's have a fast battery drainige issue.
I was actually considering an omnia, great specs, but after having a look at my mates,I think i made the right choice in the diamond. The omnia's screen is to pixelated for me after using the gorgeous vga screen on the diamond.
Most games can be played on it, but you can use the resize app, which comes with Panosha's Rom, but I havent used it really.
Go for the Diamond - 480 x 640 VGA - thats INSANE.
The pic quality is awesome.
Movie play back is great.
Only limitation is the unswappanle 4Gig internal drive.
But for some of us thats enough.
The iphone is just a ipod with phone function as a gimmic, like when phones came out with built in cams.
Whats the use of bluetooth if you cant transfer files over it??????
And for those are going to say how good the ipod sounds and blah blah blah - you shoud try the Cowon music players and others.
The Diamond is a pocket PC ! Enough said
Its a very impressive device , which is packed full of featues.
But be carfull when you buy , some unfortunate people have got a few bad eggs, where the screens have a yellow tint and the back heats up.
Mine however, knock on wood - is working perfectly.
Bought in Sinagapore.
Its such a sic little device.
I thought the back heating up was not a problem?
Some people report excessive heating. Though I think majority of them just overstates! (clearly)
Also I can't confirm whether the "minority" really suffers from that problem.
