On several occasions I find that my att tilt had spontaneously switched to flight mode. This has serious consequences for me since I depend on my phone for my work. I am a physician, only recently I carried a beeper, cell phone, and a PDA, to handle my paging, calling back and the several apps I use daily. It was wonderful to exchange all three for a relatively compact machine. But this issue if not resolved it will certainly cause me to revert to a different system. I am in critical care and time is of essence, it is simply a matter of life or death that I am contacted in a timely manner when needed. It is unacceptableto work under these unreliable conditions. Idealy I would like to comletely disable/remove flight mode as I have no use for it, or stop my phone from going into flight mode at any time.
P.S. I noticed that this may occur when my phone is out of range from a cellular network signal. I work in shielded rooms to prevent xray radiation from escaping and affecteing people outside the room. At the same time this prevents wireless signal from reaching inside, so I may be without a signal several times on some days. When the signal returns, the phone now does not accept text or calls, until I manually turn the phone on in the com manager.
Any ideas?
Ouch.

There doesn't seem to be a definite solution...
I have a TyTN II that I used stock for 3 months then flashed to Sleuth's for now several months. I almost always have the phone set for 3G Off (EDGE only) to save battery. I use 3G only when needing speed, streaming etc..
In all this time the phone has never gone into flight mode. Perhaps try loading a comm manager that allows you to hold off 3G and try that for a while? Check out "Shaps Advanced Config" to add the 3G button to your comm manager screen. With that you can turn off 3G and perhaps stabilize the phone when it looses signal when you are out of range. I work with medical instrumentation and am in hospitals all the time and go out of range as you say, many times per day without incident.
I also have a Tilt that I got as a spare when there was a promo for $149 and that was cheaper than phone insurance. I will be flashing it soon to Sleuth's rom and testing it before I do the same on a friends Tilt... I'll be watching to see if this is a Tilt thing, but that should be unlikely.
I would flash a new rom to your tilt being that the WM6.1 was just released on this forum I would go with that one. Make sure you HardSPL your tilt first before flashing to a different rom. there are plunty of threads and a whole wiki on how to do all of this properly. If that doesn't work then exchange it for a new one. I have a feeling a new rom and radio will work just fine though
Folkes thanks for the suggesstions. I was forced to suspend any upgrading since my 8925 is out of commission while I am waiting for a replacement on my cracked LCD screen. This happened for the second time in so many months (each time costing $70, and near heart attack trying to replace the screen without damaging phone). Is it bad luck or a 8925 design issue? This time LCD cracked while the phone was in a leather case.
I have been fooling with my old cing 8525, managed to install Hard SPL and flashed a couple of roms. I feel like I need to learn some more by trial and error so that if I manage to brick my phone I can spare my 8925. Is there a rom that is out there that does not have flight mode? Can such a rom be built?
P.S. Having searched many forums on other sites, beyond doubt you have the most eager to help experts. People like me who only dabble occasionally, would never be able to scratch the surface without your help. Please keep up the excellent work.
I use the Tilt all the time - I use a PDair leather case and have never had any problem with "cracked" screen. Nothing even close - but - in an emergency environment where things are smacking up against you - well - the laws of physics apply...
Regarding "going into flight mode". I have never had this happen - I got the original AT&T ROM and then upgraded myself to the latest AT&T ROM and my ONLY wish about this phone would be longer battery life.
It never makes it for more than a day without charging - at the moment I can live with that - but I WISH that I did not have to eye it nervously towards the end of the day.

If contacting you in a timely fashion is a matter of life and death, I would not depend on any windows mobile/palm/smartphone device. There's just too much going on that could go wrong to prevent you (as you've discovered) from getting that one call.
I'd rather stick to a simpler device.

I have used suh a device for three to four years without a problem, starting with 8125, 8525, and now 8925. I agree that wwindows devise may freeze up more often but other setups have other issues and are less practical.
I agree with RemE I think it has to do with battery life, somehow shuts down the radio. I plan to upgrade ROM whenever I get the chance. Are the different ROMs better for different carriers, e.g. att? I had Faria on my hermes which worked fine.

Hi
i currently own a Vario 2 from Tmobile, had it about 18 months now and more than happy with it.
The question is, is it worth upgrading to a Vario 3. i have read some of this forum and seems to be a lot of negative views on the Vario 3.
So should i upgrade or just sit with my Vario 2?
the only reason would be if you needed integrated GPS...
In any other cases : NO
I dont really need a seperate GPS as i have a full tomtom.
so i guess the vario 3 does not add much more to the choice then.
more ram, more rom, larger storage capabilities.... its not just the gps chip
I would agree on the whole stability issue. My hermes was a nightmare for the whole 18 months i owned it. Soft resets several times a day, occaisonal spontaneous hard resets, crashes for no reason, sleep of death, non-functioning touch screen...the list goes on.
But the tytn 2 (which i do own) is a crippled platform (video drivers) and you may well find that waiting for something like the imate 9502 (if it ever comes) would be better.
I just bought one (but didnt have the II before to compare) and I have to say its far surpassed my hopes and expectations... so far that is... lol... I did and do own an Acer N50 premium pda and that I had to soft reset often and while the screen was a little larger the III is more clear and vibrant... all in all you wouldnt be going wrong getting one.
Yes forgetting the driver issue the Kaiser is better phone. Like Mike said much better feel and more stable. The extra RAM was really why I upgraded from Hermes and I am happy with it over all. I dont want to bring the driver thing to this thread also, but I wish HTC would do something about these issues. These days putting a unfinished product to the market is one thing, but saying we aint going to fix this is another.
I guess it comes down to how much you would have to pay. If you get a good deal and good price from your old phone why not.
I only use the office apps email etc. I dont use the camera, play games, watch video or use even the gps.
My heavyest use could be like: writing a new email, Word and Ecxel open for copying something for the email and i get a call, all in the same time. This is when i dont want my phone to crash and Kaiser is been working great for this type of use.

Is it actually any worse that previous model in this respect though? As in, can it be lived with considering the fact you no longer have to:

Personally I would put up with lag to some degree if it meant I no longer had to soft reset several times a day and risked loosing everything with a random hard reset...do you know how long it takes to re-install and re-configure these blooming things!

5 Minutes to be exact. sprite backup has made restoring a matter of minutes rather than hours. I do alot of testing with my TYTN II being an MS beta tester plus beta testing for a few other companies I have to do hard resets to change configuration. I have about 6 different backups on mine used for different tests but to hard reset its a breeze. sprite backup is well worth using (plug not intended)
I've been using Vario II for quite a long time. I had only issues with TomTom on the stock WM5 ROM. From the first cooked WM6 ROMs I've been quite happy. Nevertheless, I decided to change for Vario III. And I don't regret.
It's slimmer, I do feel that 128MB Ram make a difference.
There are 2 things I don't like. First one, I cannot use it as a torch when goin down the stairs to the loo in the middle of the night and that ****e quality rubber covering the microsd slot. After a few card swaps it looks as if it had been used for a year, not 2 weeks. If it was made from harder plastic, everything would be ok.

Its a tough one especially as i have a friend who owns a hermes and never has any problems with it.
Knowing what I know now I would probably not upgrade and wait a bit and see what appears in the next 6 months as well continue to pester orange for a properly functioning handset.
That said the Kaiser is VERY liveable with and does what i ask of it but the slowdowns are noticeable and quite disappointing.
I too have a Vario II from T-Mobile. Worlds worse phone by far. Mine's been back for repair twice. Keeps crashing, buttons lock up. Last time it went back because every time it crashed (twice a day) you had to reboot it. Then the alarm clock would go off for 40 minutes on vibrate and speaker and couldn't be stopped with out taking the battery out.
Totally fed up with this horrible phone. I was so fed up I put the phone in the microwave to trash the system board so T-Mobile had to give me a new one.
Got the phone yesterday and it crashed... pressed reset on the bottom with the stylus. This morning phones locked up again while selecting a ring tone. Argh....... I want my Nokia 9300 communicator back.
I'd love the Nokia E90. HSDPA and it has a good reputation.
I've an iPAQ 2790 with a 624Mhz cpu and 256Mb ram so I really don't need this thing from T-Mobile. Maybe ebaying it is the solution to my problems.
forgot to mention the new vario II back from T-Mobile has windows mobile 6 on it. Just as rubbish on this phone as windows mobile 5.
I personally find the Vario II with WM6 on it very stable. There is no comparison with WM5 - now I reset it more out of habit than any need. There are some issues but nothing that causes me real problems.
Having had both a Kaiser (on loan) and a Hermes for the last 4 months having to pay for an upgrade or going through loads of fuss to get one is not really worth the extras the Kaiser has over the Hermes.
A fresh user I would tell to get the Kaiser ofcourse.
Id also add that the vast majority of users in the Hermes section and from the people I know who use them havent had such extreme issues as soft resets daily and random Hard resets, most of the issues people encounter are due to 3rd party apps conflicting with eachother.
The driver issue with the kaiser is a pretty poor point personally since I tend to use coreplayer quite alot and the playback on the Hermes is flawless.
Id say if you already have a hermes then the added extras on the kaiser aint really enough to justify an upgrade (since knowing HTC a TyTN III or something like is soon around the corner), but for a brand new user its worth getting one.
I had a VarioII for 18 months before upgrading to a VarioIII, and I know exactly this dilemma.
Does the VarioIII have enough to persuade you to ditch the II?
My answer is yes - but with qualifications.
I had the BT GPS/TomTom/powered car kit setup on my VarioII, so the in-built GPS is of value. My TT Navigator software installed with no fuss on the VarioIII, and that is more stable (I had occasional hang ups in TT6 which hitting OK then opening the TT6 dsoftware again alays got past). Its behaved flawlessly in this regard, even though the GPS unit isnt as good as my BT SirfStarIII unit its certainly up to the job.
Like others have said, the extra RAM seems to make a huge difference to performance - very few soft resets and NO hard resets in the month I've had the phone. Also, I had the classic VarioII "screen align drift" issue, and I've not had to recalibrate once with the VarioIII yet.
My biggest issue is with the screen slide going the "wrong" way. It just seems daft. This means putting the stylus away with the screen in landscape is now a left handed function and damn fiddly, and dont get me started on where the scroll wheel is now! It used to be so easy to roll with your thumb in landscape mode - now its a right index finger job, and is behind the open screen. Poor decision, HTC.
I flashed my VarioII to WM6 via the t-mobile website, and that has performed better since, so maybe a VarioIII isnt a necessary purchase. However, I'm enjoying mine, and that is the best acid test of all.
Good luck.
Hi,
[RANT]
I like many of you, love to upgrade my phone. New apps/Roms every other day. But I am having trouble with this process and I was wondering if any of you have experienced the same.
I live in an area with poor Coverage and O2 gives my about 2 bars at home where as my girlfriends network (Orange) has zero coverage.
She often borrows my phone when at home (or when out and about, if hers is on charge / left in the car etc. etc.)
The problem I am having is that every time I add a new app or flash a Rom (recently Dutty V4, PocketCm and S2u2) I get nagged with, "what have you done that for?", "you've changed you phone and now I can't use it".
Any problem with my phone, no matter how little or unrelated to the software it is always my fault for filling the phone full of crap. "Why can I leave it alone?" she asks. - She just doesn't get it.
My current solution is http://www.hackaday.com/2007/10/23/cell-phone-taser/ . Does anyone else suffer from similar problems. If so can you please post you less violent suggestions here...
[/RANT]
P.S. I am not sexist, anyone who complains about what you do to your phone counts.
Oh man, my missus ALWAYS moans when I change even so much as a plugin on my today screen! Really annoys me!
Simple solution. Tell them (spouses and girlfriends) to buy there "own" phone. I kind of like mine all customized, once someone asks if they can make a quick call, they never ask again cause they cant figure out how to use it most of the time.
Must admit I'm just about to part company with the TyTn. I've been impressed with it to a degree as a PDA but I do think the phone element of it is atrocious. What makes it worse now is that there seems to be problem after problem with it, especially after the 6.1 upgrade.
Latest problem is that today it just seems to slow down, lock or even freeze completely. Going to contacts and hitting a contact in the list doesn't open it up any more and problems just seem to start from there. Once this happens I can't close programmes, can't navigate in them, in fact can't do anything, at least until the damn thing seems to catch up with a key press I made 1/2 an hour ago. Restarts and battery removal seem to fix it for 1/2 an hour or so but then it's back to lag and lock. Sick and tired of it now.
It got turned off and on again while connected to PC by USB and not sure if that's caused it but overall I'm getting quite fed up with the device and the WM 6.1 combi.
Contemplating a hard reset or even re-flash (possibly back to WM6.0 but the problems with SPL reversion put me off that) to try to fix what has just become a bug ridden pain to use.
Did you install Hard SPL to upgrade to WM6.1, or are you using your Carriers ROM?
If so what version of Hard SPL are you currently using?
Ta
Dave
Dont forget that its not the phone´s fault but M$ and HTC. They build the crappy roms. I have cooked rom on my kaiser and I am more then satisfied with it.
Absolutely nothing wrong with mine and I've had it since Jan this year.
Whatever problem has occurred has been as a result of my installing some app that conflicts with something, but I have aways been able to rectify matters.

Same here, though i have this device since may this year. I have to say that a flash with a custom rom improves the quality of the kaiser. Carrier roms are slow and full with programs i do not use.
My only remark is that the phone reacts slow on phonecalls. It takes a second or two before the phone rings when you are called. Besides that, the phone responses slow when i end a call. So the reaction time can be improved. Still: that's my only remark and i do not even know if that is a phone or os related problem.

Ditto, I've had mine a year and it's a champ. Either your spl is wrong for 6.1 or your phone is sick and needs to go to the phone hospital.
Never had any problem with my Tytn II ....love it,, with me since April this year...
The Copilot GPS software which i got free with phone works like a dream.
Cheers.
No problems with my device and I am taking it to the limits daily.
If you need a solid fast reliable smartphone - you can sure find better then this.
but if you look for a device that can be configured to fit exactly your taste and needs with the best support ever (yes, I'm speaking about the XDA-Dev forum) keep this one.
this is the ultimate device for those who are seeking for constant improvment and willing to invest some of their time in it (flashing flashing flashing)
Well I'm glad for those that are having a better experience than mine. Mine is still pretty dismal though.
Like an idiot I just followed the instructions from HTC for installing their 6.1 and haven't touched SPL. It was all working fine (of sorts) yesterday (despite the fact that I wished I had not upgraded to 6.1) andf then it just keeps locking up. Using SMS and hitting to accept a word offered by predictive text guarantees a lock as does opening contacts and selecting a contact. Will look at the SPL issue but didn't really want to be tinkering with that as I wanted to keep it all stock from the warranty side. At the moment though I suspect even the warranty will not cover it when I hurl it against the wall from having to do the 25th reset of the day.
I suggest you do a hard reset; then install Hard SpL and go to WM 6.1. Once SpL is installed there will be very few, if any, problems with the device.
Cheers

Thats weird mate, before even knowing that xda existed I flashed mine to 6.1 on the HTC site and it worked like a charm.
I have to say that I bought this phone well knowing that it was more of a ppc than a phone. I have to say that this phone has BLOWN ME AWAY with the capabilities shown through this forum. I suppose I shouldnt be surprised, being that it is practically a computer, all the mods are basically batch files and adjusting the registry or are skins. I absolutely love this machine!
I just got my Diamond back from repairs and wanted to compare experiences:
1)
I first bought a Diamond two months ago. It came with 1.37 ROM series on it, the screen wasn't too yellowish, but touch function wasn't responsive and the GPS was a MESS!
(of course, I tried many ROMs official and unofficial, almost every Radio ROM and various Hard-SPL. None of that fixed the problems.)
I could cope with with the other flaws, but I just couldn't bear my GPS wasn't getting a fix, no matter how much sattelits were in view...
It worked at first, but soon started to display '66666' instead of the location and finally, it would never display any location again.
I tried every tips and tricks and softs, it helped giving me more and more satellits in view and apparently active, but at the end my crappy GPS could never turn the datas received into a proper location...
2)
I sent my device back to warranty (after flashing back to official ROM and SPL) and had to wait for about a month.
(the technician at first tought I was just a noob unable to set his phone properly, but after two days of attempts, he had to admit that there was something wrong with my phone and sent it to the the headquarter for replacement of motherboard and so on.
3)
The new phone I got came directly with 1.93 ROM and a little bit more yellowish screen, though, there is no spot or stain on it. So the coulour doesnt bother me.
But from the beginning I noticed the new phone was much more responsive even at the slightest touch.
From the first try, the GPS got a fix in about 1 mn time, with only 3-4 satelits in view.
I installed Hard-SPL and the latest Australian Official ROM, and though the screen seems now a little less responsive than before, the GPS is still working, fine.
I'm a VERY happy user of Diamond now, but I'm still wondering one thing:
it looks like once the warranty technicians understood that I was very demanding about quality and complete functions, they took time but gave me a phone totally different in terms of behaviour and quality of the components sensitivity of screen, GPS etc.
Is there some bad production series that they never tells publicly about, and much more better series that they give you as a replacement once they understand you will bother them until the end of time if you are not satsified?
Plz tell your experience about having received two new diamonds with totally different behaviour and quality of the components.
I guess you are totally right!!!
My first device was pealing paint in the aluminium frame on the second day, work very good by the way.
Now i´m on the second device and i my hardware keys, especially the call button is sometimes irresponsive and i have to push it several times to enter the dial.
Tried cooked rooms as well, and the call button issue still remains, so i´m a little unhappy with my diamond experience.
I've noticed that whenever i turn on my display after having left the diamond unused for sometime the lcd doesn't switch on smoothly, what i mean is that it first displays a grey pattern(only for a ms or so) and then the desktop( lcd off>>grey flash>>desktop). Usually the transition from off to desktop is quite smooth, but in my case its not!
Is this a s/w issue or h/w ?
I've never experienced that particular problem myself, but sounds like H/W problem to me...
just been through a couple of other threads related to the grey screen of death...i've had it once...it happened while i ended a call, had to soft reset to resolve it.
take a look at the grey screen of death i'm talking about
Pretty scary indeed!
It might not be a coincidence that you experienced both: grey transition when switching on the screen and once, the grey screen of death after a call...
Two different effects of the same defective part in your H/W?
a solution!, almost
untill now i've had auto brightness control switched off and the brightness was set to minimum to save battery life, but now i just tried switching on auto adjust backlight and the problem seems to have vanished.....coming out of standby is smooth as ever!
although i've to say that i don't quite understand the logic behind it.
*EDIT*
it doesn't help for long

This is what I was worrying about...
Your method sounded like a work around to avoid the display failure. But as a matter of fact, there must be a reason for the display to fail. (bad screen, power supply or something...)
By the way, I'm more and more convinced about my assumption that there are bad production series and better ones:
Today I had my device connected to my PC through USB for a couple of hours. In the meantime, I was downloading and deleting messages, watching google video on opera, after that I used wifi etc.
In this situation, my first Diamond would have got hot like hell and my hand could barely stand the pain...
Since many people were complaining about over-heat problems, I thought that was a common problem with Diamond.
But the new one did not get that hot. Just a little over-warmed, but definitely not too hot. From that phenomenon, I can see what I felt about a better touch-flow behaviour, a better GPS and so on is a part of a whole:
I was first sold a ****ty phone, and now I finally got a proper Diamond!
People with bad series, you don't have to cope with all those troubles, ask for a replacement phone!
my diamond gets heated up quite a bit at times....but i dont fully uderstand what exactly is the cause.....i've had experiences with the diamond getting pretty hot while using wifi & or gps and on another occasion i was watching a DVDRIP via wifi(@ full power) using core player and also with gps cycle running in the backgroud, still the diamond stayed well within reasonable limits.
i think it has to be a software problem, possibly the radio s/w
would you mind sharing the radio version of your diamond?
As written in my signature, I'm using the 1.00.25 which is included in all latest official ROMs.
By the way, I hope you did not cast a spell on me! (just kidding)
Today I experienced my first grey screen!!!
My Diamond was connected to the PC through USB cable, downloading e-mails, and I got a phone call. When I hung the phone, It suddainly happened, for the first time in my Diamond user carreer!
Just for one second, looking like an old black and white TV screen trying to tune on channels.
Hope that was the first and last time. In ordinary calls, (without being synchronized to the PC at the same time, it never happened so far...
sorry to hear that my friend

I'd the same experience except for the fact that my diamond wasn't connected to a PC.
I hard reseted my diamond yesterday, but the grey splash while i turn on the display from standby(post 3) still exists ( ......i don't suppose its a software problem anymore.

Why not trying to send it back to the seller and get a new one?
This problem is easy to demonstrate to the technicians, and I don't think they will be cheeky enough to say that's a normal phenomenon!

not that easy.....the thing is that if we turn on & off the lcd without a gap of atleast 4-5 min(dono exactly) i dont see that grey splash
i think im going to wait another 3-4 months before i approach for warranty.
I had that "gray splash" problem with my Kaiser and Diamond.
Hard reset also didn't work like above. For both devices the fix was simply flashing to a different (cooked) ROM.
As mentioned in another thread, the grey screen problem was fixed (as least for me when I flashed to dutty's rom)

There might be some tweaks in the cooked ROMs that avoid the problem, or it might be due to some bad flashing or defective hardware.
If not, how do you explain that I've never experienced this with my previous HTC phones (wizard, Trinity...) nor I experienced it with my Diamonds (the first one and the new one) with stock or cooked ROMs.
except for that very special time, when I received a call while downloading messages through Active Sync.
Like many users my N1 isn't exactly perfect but I have putting up with it since day one (release day) since I like what the phone does when it does properly.
I have touch screen accuracy issues, mitigated somewhat by having a silicone case around the phone and using Swype and occasionally pressing the power button off and on to get it working again. My camera has a pinkish hue which HTC said I should try to remove by doing a factory reset. My wifi isn't exactly great with it taking often 30s or more to download a page on my home wifi and with the latest firmware, my GPS seems to be erratic.
The phone hardly ever can get a lock on the satellites when it's in the car on the dash which makes it pretty useless as a car GPS device but outside it seems to lock on okay. Occasionally if I an outside and get a lock, then take the phone in the car, it maintains a lock.
This was never great but got worse it seems with the latest firmware. The phone itself isn't rooted.
Reading the horror stories about refurbs and having to go through more than one I just wonder if getting a refurb is going to help me. I would go the send refurb to me first route so I wouldn't be without a phone during the swap and possibly send the refurb back if it wasn't working properly.
I presume it's highly unlikely that HTC has new units to send out now for warranty replacements?
What do folks think?
