I lost my T-Mobile Kaiser a couple of weeks ago and am using my lovely Universal at the moment but I need to get something smaller.
What's the best value on the market at the moment?
It has to be unlocked because I have 12 months left on my flex web and walk!
The Kaiser is around £470 unlocked which I can't afford
I want
Good battery life
3G
HSDPA
Bluetooth
GPS
Wifi
WM 6
Mobile Office
Smallish
Lightweight
Camera (but this is low priority)
Yes I know I want it all but hey!
I have looked at the Asus P750 as the best fit so far and it seems to have good reviews.
HP 614, read about that too, but it said it had a poor feel to it (build quality)
Also read about the MWg Atom V
Any thoughts?
I am guessing you are in the UK. You might want to consider whether your household contents insurance covers you for loss of personal property (mine doesn't, my parents does). Guess you'll have to weigh it up between new phone and excess/no-claims loss.
Otherwise, you *might* want to consider buying a Hermes/Trion/Vario 2 second hand. These are not entirely dissimilar to the Kaiser and go for £100 to £150 on ebay, but they do not have GPS built in, so you'd have to buy an external device. For comparison, last I saw Kaisers were going for over £300 on ebay.
Hope that helps.
Surely insurance or warranty will cover a lost phone?
Funny you should ask this, cos a few days ago THIS THREAD was posted about a guy who'd basically found/stole a Kaiser, could it be....?
kaiser
im selling mine, im the uk, im looking for around half that price - around 260.

I was thinking of going for one. They are only 149.
Should I just wait and forego? I have an 8525 that I upgraded to WM6 and and I just changed the case on it and it works like a champ, at least for now.)
You you guys think with the driver issues I should wait for the next new device or go for the refurb.

150 isnt bad for the device.. if ur into watching movies on your phone stick to 85..

I do use my slingbox and I watch movies and Star TreK TOS eppys.
I guess I better stick with it.
I can't believe they'd eff up that bad and screw up on the market base they established on the 8525.
DAYUM.
Do yo u know what the next device is?
where?
i am not thrilled with the driver situation, but my tilt is better for me in many ways than my old 8125...where can i pick up one for 149? my gf would love this as a bday gift.
150 !!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i want it for 150...can i return it for a refurb please....
I bought my 8925 new for $125 after rebates. Had to sign up for a new AT&T plan though. Have to be a new AT&T customer.
Hey Xultar, come on over. Despite the driver fever I'm telling you flat out that the Kaiser is better than the 8525. I've used it for hours on end streaming my Slingboxes over WiFi and 3G without issue. I also play videos (encoded at 320x240 with bitrates under 500kps) that I've used with all my portable gear from Archos units to iPAQ's and they play just fine on the Kaiser as well.
I'd be more concerned with the lower volume on bluetooth ear pieces compared to the 8525, it's useable but a little irratating that it's not top notch.
The unit has been so stable that I've not needed to flash from the stock Kaiser rom, just using a bunch of cabs and Kaiser Tweak. The GPS is really an awesome addition, worth the trade-up alone in my book. I looked into insurance and it was more than $149 so when ATT had a Thanksgiving sale, I picked up a Tilt for $149 and keep it in the box as my insurance. If I do put it in service, I will flash it for sure, prolly to Sleuth's v1.1 as I like it the most, slim and solid.
If you do it, I'm betting that you will be happy.
ordered mine on ebay 2 days ago. Pretty reasonable price being from Canada
... is that 150 on a contract? I'm in Canada
newegg.com has it for cheap too.. 2yr contracts newegg's are BRAND NEW.. but u kno what refurbs arent bad.. 1yr warranty on them
That's about what I got mine for on sale, after rebate, & with a two-year contract.
I just don't know if I can. I'm really concerned about the driver issue and just keeping what I have working. I can't live without my slingbox or video Star Trek TOS eppys. Plus the bluetooth on the 8525 was to low for me. I couldn't imagine it being lower.
What is coming down the pike? Maybe I will go for it. I just need to think. I also need to find out how many upgrades I get a year. That may impact it as well.

Just wondering...
Picked up a new V1615 (Vodafone Kaiser) from a Vodafone store just now because that's all they could offer me.
I really, really want an Mwg Atom V (details) or Atom Life which has some amazing specs (details) instead though.
So I want to sell the Vodafone brand new boxed and unopened, SIM free and unlocked.
What kind of price can I expect for it?
Thanks
Its worth as much as a standard Kaiser probably, and a bit more than an AT&T Tilt. But the main place for selling phones is eBay; so prices vary widely. You can probably get upwards of $650 for it.
You do know that in some respects the Kaiser beats the pants off that Atom thingy? For one thing, it has a keyboard. It also has GPS and a 3.1MP camera instead of a 2.0MP. There is also a much larger ROM community for the HTC phones than for the Atom.

Hmmm...I agree with some of what you say about the Atoms now after doing some more research.
One thing that's struck me is the customer service feedback about the Atom's manufacturers. Very few have anything nice to say about the service they received if something went wrong with their device. I'd be in fear of ever needing them.
The main things that have attracted me to the Atom phones so far is the use of Intel Xscale chips, better video support and the use of Sirfstar III chipsets for GPS. I don't need a high spec camera so I'm not bothered by the lack of high pixel capture.
In my experience of using old HTC devices (Universal, Magician) and some new ones (Trinity / P3600 and Kaiser), the older ones seemed faster for some reason. I don't know for sure but the Intel architecture seems better than the Qualcomm.
Also, the Sirfstar III GPS hardware wipes the floor with Qualcomm's equivalents in my experience and doesn't need QuickGPS to get a very fast lock in a built up city like London where I live.
Why did HTC start using these dodgy Qualcomm chips?
I'm still undecided...I just hate waiting with computers / PDAs etc...They should just work, and work fast. Maybe I'm asking for too much.
Anymore opinions?
You in the UK? Is the V1615 on contract?
Not impressed by those Atoms...

That's all they could offer? You have got to be kidding, there isnt a better phone on voda, and you must pay silly amounts monthly to get that offered to you.
also, note, the vodafone one is unlocked from factory.
Though i did manage to pick one up for £20 a month on my contract for an upgrade, free! but i have a hell of a business head when it comes to negotiating!

I meant that's all they could offer me in terms of high spec PDAs and I wasn't interested in Blackberrys.
I pay about £45 a month on my contract, but it is an 18 month one. Not bad, but then I've been with Voda for almost 10 years now.
Anyway....I've seen them go on ebay for around £350. Tempted to sell...Still not sure...Still haven't opened the box.
So noone really recommends the Mwgs? If that's the case then I don't really have any other options and I'll just use the Kaiser.
Maybe one day someone will find out how to enable all the great hardware inside the case

No it's not - it's 100% your property, and your problem. That's not conditional on anything. The contract debt is separate - you owe them the value of that regardless of what you do with the phone. Sell it, keep it, give it back to them, you still owe the contract sum whatever you do.

Hey everyone, I'm a new poster here and new to Windows Mobile. I've used Palm in the past but made the switch to an 8525. I've had my eye on the Tilt for a long time and am considering buying the refurbished model which goes for a rather modest $149.99.
The reason I'm cautious about buying the Tilt refurbished is because in the 5 months or so I've owned my 8525, all the buttons on the top of the phone excpet for the directional keys have stopped working along with intermittent failure of the memory card slot. I've found that this issue is fairly common among people who have the phone, but I have no warranty so I'm out of luck.
Would anyone caution me against the Tilt refurb? Should I spring the extra money to get it new? Also, my SIM is rather old... Do I need a 3G SIM to use the network?

I'd caution you to search for the SAME questions that you are seeking answers to. I've read the threads myself in the past so I know they are out there.
Get it
I purchased a refurbished tilt from AT&T about a month ago and it has been nice. i enjoy everything, well, 90% of the things about it. Not once have i looked at it as it has been refurbished. It looks and acts new. My sim was old as well, and i wound up having to use the one that was shipped with the tilt. It was no problem activating it. The out of the box Tilt had me frustrated and annoyed, but what can one expect from windows mobile. Anyway, i digress, once some decent third party apps are installed, the phone is simple, easy, and worth the meek $150 asking price. Id say to buy it. I formerly owned a Sony Ericsson K550i and would not go back.
It really depends on where your buying it from, a random online seller, direct from HTC, or from AT&T?
If from an online site, NO!!!!!
HTC or AT&T, go for it!!! Anything from an authorized retailer should gurantee it to work for a period of time, which will give you the option to return in result of a faulty device.
I bought a REFURB ATT tilt for 199.99 from ATT with a new contract. Its been working fine like a charm. so I guess its fine if ur buying from ATT or HTC. But I bought my last phone Nokia N80 from a Ebay seller. which is working fine too,
so in conclusion, Standard sellers are fine.( u get one more shot with them as a warranty), but if ur buying from Ebay or something be cautious a LOT! U might get a good deal.
hi guys, 1st post =)
I have a few q.s about the Tytn 2 before I decide to buy one ..
1. General opinions about the handset? I'm looking for a new gadget to play with and having used my friend's Tytn 2 this seems to be a worthy contender.
2. Do the Touch Diamond/Pro offer much over the Tytn 2 for the extra cost? Is it a good idea to buy the Tytn 2 2nd hand as people upgrade their handsets to newer models?
3. If i do buy a Tytn 2 I will likely buy one off ebay, unless anyone can suggest anywhere else in the Uk where I can get one cheaper. How much is a realistic price to pay for a Tytn 2 now? Used or new?
thanks!

If you're looking for something with all the bells and whistles to play with, there's not much better and there's nothing that offers the same combination of features. I find the tilting screen very useful when watching videos on the train.

I only have a UK bought HTC TyTN II so cant compare. Does the Touch Diamond/Pro have a tiltable screen (to angle it right when watching videos)? What about expandable microSD memory capability? What do you want it for (other than 'playing with')?
I guess it depends how much risk is involved in the 2nd hand purchase as to whether that’s a good idea. These phones do have some known 'issues' one of which is that the USB port can be susceptible to failure under certain circumstances and you can't really tell until you've tested it under Activesync and tried charging it a few times if that works well. I was in a phone shop a few weeks back when a very angry customer who'd bought his 2nd hand TyTN II there began to tear strips off the shopkeeper. His phone seemed to have a faulty USB port but it also looked as if it'd had a new casing at some stage too - who knows what horrors the poor thing had endured? You need to really know what you're looking at if you buy 2nd hand. If you're not a seasoned veteran, it's safer buying new.

I got my HTC Branded TyTN II back at the end of September 07 and from memory it was about £160 with a 12 month £35 for 500 mins/500 texts Vodafone contract. The company I bought it from is no longer trading and prices have come down since then (especially so if you want a carrier branded variant - they weren't even around back then). Do some research on the net and in phone shops - in the end it's you who has to be satisfied with what you're getting. As it's your first post, you'll need to read the wiki here too - compulsory reading for all newcomers!
What about a HTC Universal/XDA Exec/MDA 5000 as a cheaper option?
What about researching. No one can tell you what one to by. I usually live by this motto.
If reading the specs of a phone doesn't get you excited. you Will loose interest in your "new phone" fast.
Hey, Sorry to spam with a general question.
My current phone is on it's death bed (SE P900). I want to upgrade to an X1a (via rogers in canada) but i'm a little worried if I should or wait it out for an X2. I'm over all very keen on getting either an X1 or X2 (due to an actual keyboard and a stylus based touch screen, I just can't use an iphone touch screen at all, plus the OS pisses me off). I'm also looking to maybe do some xperia panel programming on the side (mostly making some small simple games with some simple use of 3d).
I think I could wait it out for an X2 but i'm worried it's going to be a long 6-8 months+ before it's available in canada. Not to mention I expect the price to be a little too high for a while. Yet if I get an X1a now, my wife is not going to let me upgrade again for another 2-3 years. =)
So should I wait or just go a head and get an X1 now?
if you want to wait i suggest you hold out for a snapdragon powered device that you prefer. If you dont want to wait just get the X1. The X1 and X2 share the same hardware apart from certain differences, so your not really losing anything hugely important
Not sure what price your getting from rogers, but i got my x1a just awile ago for $1 signing a 3 year contract so i pretty much had nothing to lose upgrading. I usually do a hardware upgrade every 1-2 years and sign a new contract with a better plan each time. I highly suggest talking with customer relations as only they can give you better deals than whats advertised.
How much is Rogers letting you upgrade the phone for? I think I'm getting ripped off through customer relations...
PsychoAssassin: When did you sign the 3 year contract? I did mine last week and it was absolutely nowhere near $1...
PsychoAssasin,
What is your current plan? I'm kind of happy with my plan that I got 6 years ago.

Back durring christmas, if you signed a 3 year contract they were giving away a X1 for only $1.
personally I would get x10 or the newer android models
as wm7 is likely to be closed land for other wm devices
and wm6.X is a dead platform
I renewed my contract and chose the $50/month plan with a couple of freebies on top. They're charging me $149 + $35 administration for the X1 with a $50 "hardware upgrade" mail-in rebate. The site says the phone is only $99 for a 3yr term, so what's the deal? Does the hardware upgrade rebate take off the $50 I was supposed to be saving to begin with? Something doesn't sound right, but the lady I spoke to told me that was the price that was showing up for her. I'm defnitely going to call back to see if there's anything I can do, since I like this phone. I'm still under the 15 days grace period.
PSmonkey64: How much are they charging you for the X1? I definitely want to get a better price for mine.
hardware upgrade prices can and will most often differ from new contract prices. But recently Rogers has changed their hardware upgrade policy to now say that all clients are eligible for new customer pricing after 2 years. So Rydock if it has been 2 years you are eligible to get the X1a for $99 + $35 admin fee. On top of that you can use the $50 mail in rebate to effectively bring the cost down to $49.99 + $35 admin fee. This policy doesnt apply to corporate customers, which is why I had to pay about $300 (without signing up for data) for it about 2 months after it came out on the rogers network
regarding the grace period, remember its 15 days or 30 mins of talktime whichever comes first.
PSmonkey64,
if you are dead set on getting a sony ericsson Xperia, Rogers will be getting the X10 in Q2. If you were to wait for an xperia let that be the model of choice
Yeah, I've been with Rogers for over 3 years, and they were asking for $149. I'll give them a call tomorrow to sort this out.
I haven't put my sim in the X1 yet because I've just been playing around with it to see if I liked it. I've decided to keep it, so I'm just trying to figure a way to get all my contacts from my razr to my X1. Also, I want to use the new sim since my old card is all beat up and scratched. How do I go about doing this, or do I have to call Rogers?
To the OP, sorry for the thread hijack. I'd say the X1 would be totally worth it because of the low price and supposed slightly stronger units. Also, there is tons of support here.

yea the rogers xperia has a slightly new build which helps prevent cracks, but i did manage to develop one right beside the power bottom, but i would blame myself from the numerous times i dropped it.
your best bet for contact transfer would be to use the moto software to sync contacts with outlook and then sync your x1 with outlook.
for the sim card, call rogers, they will/will not deal with it as im not sure on their policy towards that.

wm7 seem to be more a evolution of zuneHD then old wm

Well, I kind of disagree on that...
I mean we can only guess but I don't imagine
WM beeing really not open in some way and competitive.
My feeling is that MS will drastically cut the price of WM 6.X to manufacturers, so that there will continue to be a big base. I think we'll continue to see no-frills but nice hardware phones like the LG Expo start to come in at the $400 price range and below. The WP 7 phones will get all the press and be the headline phones for the carriers and cost $600-$800 unsubsidized. I think MS will just gradually improve the finger friendliness and look of WM 6.X with a few more releases. As processors and hardware improve, it should become a fast and lightweight OS. Not a bad outlook, in my opinion.
Well just to note an update.
I end up coughing up the extra $$$ (and convincing the wife) and buying an X2. The reason being I saw one on ebay being sold by a person only 10 mins away that was barely used.
So far i'm loving it. I do have a question for anybody who might know, How do I get the X2 to auto connect to my home's wifi when i'm home? Messing/configuring the phone i've had to restart it a few times and every time it starts with wifi turned off.
Now to figure out how the hell to setup the xperia sdk (the emu isn't properly running, also it seems I can't debug opengl ES with it?).
take a Toshiba TG01. it's much cheaper.
Both X1 and X2 use legacy CPU... I think you may consider other alternatives...
Too... late.
If only people would read newer post.
