more space in stock rom??? - Wing, P4350 Herald Upgrading

so i was playing around with actvsysc n notice that u can explore every single file on my wing n i found some file/ringtones i dont need so i copyed all the files i didnt want.n put them in a folder in my computer called deleted wing stuff(backup) n found a total on 5.5mb of usless junk i dont need on my wing... after that i tried 2 delete eveything i didnt want from my wings memory but i get some "cant delete file kuz its under protection"momdojamdo so my question is is there any1 that has found a way 2 get around this... it would be alot easyer for me than flashing a new cooked rom n if i do this ill gain 5+mb of storage on my wing... any suggestion

No. Most of the files are cooked into the ROM and therefore cannot be deleted. The few files that aren't cooked where created when you turned on the phone and went through the setup. Unfortunately, to truly get more space, you WILL have to install a cooked ROM.

Killing My5 files...

I'm working on my ROM and I know how to disable My5 from starting, but what about the My5 files? Do they need to stay there? Which files are My5? How much space are they taking? Which can I take out? Etc.
Also, is there a CAB with My5 on it? That would allow me to set an option on my kitchen to either install or not install it...
I think the only way to do this is to cook the ROM yourself and delete these files prior to building it. I'm waiting for ITJE to upload his cooking folders so I can do this myself and free up about 1.5M of space.

You dont have to wait.
Extract the stripped version
using my tutorial
Thats the version you are gonna get either by extracting it, or wait for me to upload folders, witch might take awhile.
cheers
But which files are safe to delete from the extracted folders? My kitchen would warn me of the files, if I could just get a cab with My5 n it... (It checks for duplicate files.)
I don't have the time right now, but I have to hunt down all the files I need to kill on your ROM in order for it to work on my kitchen. (The Comm manager for example (as you can choose between 4 or 5 different comm managers on the kitchen, but it'll give you an error if the ROM already has its own because of duplicate files.) And I still don't know what the differences between the Wing and the Herald are. Is it a simple registry entry that changes the keyboard layout? Any files change?

mxip_initdb.vol - 16MB file

Hello,
I've read that this file stores contacts, notes, calendar, and the like. In earlier OS versions, it used to be rather small. in the WM6 Tilt, its 16MB. The properties show it as READ ONLY and in ROM. How can it store and info if it is READ only? It would be great to get this thing reduced in a new cooked ROM. Any comments or suggestions on making the file size smaller? Thanks, MWP.

mxip_initdb.vol questions
I've been doing some reading about this file. This file is really large and I want to do something to make sure I have no problems with this file. I removed this file from my OEM_Lang_0409 folder and I'm not sure if I'm having any problems. I seem to be able to connect to activesync okay. Although, it seems like it takes me couple unplug and plug with the USB to connect. Can I be okay with erasing this file?
Return of 16Mb space!
Well,i think now you can forget about this file!
First i cheked it with sktool,it sad than this db is unused
Then i copied it to my card and created an emty txt file with name "mxip_initdb.vol" and readonly attribs and put it in root directory. Reboot- everything works fine And my 16mb returns to me!
P.S.: my device is diamond with 1.93 rom
P.P.S.:My english is not great, but i hope it helps anybody
Interesting.. I suspect there's some very good reason for this file, as many cooks remove everything possible from their ROMs, and my ROMeOS 4.6 has this file.

i've the same problem with ROM coocked (Dib Diamond 1.9 - based on 1.93)
I've tried with your trick, but after each soft reset "mxip_initdb.vol" returns to 16Mb!
I've tried also to delete it, but again, after each soft reset "mxip_initdb.vol" reappears...
I hate this file.

How to cook ROM???

Hi, exist any "how to" cook ROM for our Treo750? I'd like to try make my own ROM.
?
any ideas? somebody?
Customize ??
I only know how to customize rom by use exists rom maybe Ruu_signed.nbh or Cheeimg.nbh .
By reading from wiki XDA http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Hermes_ROM_kitchen because of Treo750 base on Hermes.
if you want to know how to do , what to do read it from ROM Donalds topic but you can choose any tool for me prefer and (almost) use Want more Storage? Here you go! it has batch file to do all process and 'der hermes rom koch' is good for edit all hv file (hv file contain all registry setting for me I prefer to do after flash by mortscript so I only use batchfile).
Please notify once we use exists rom it mean (for me) we only use to add file or remove file with normaly we can't remove it from rom by easy way such as delete by file explorer because of system will said you can't not delete system file in rom example for me I never use Powerpoint,OneNote so I decide to customize WWE 19199 by remove 2 file and some file and rebuild back to Cheeimg.nbh and after flash and boot I got 67MB free ram for storage and 29MB for Program.
IF you need to make new one from zero I still not information I try to search from google but just know a little due to Treo has square 240x240 and very few people use that seem to be hard to find an information and sure if I got it I will let you or anyone know.

Extracting files from ROM

Hello!
My question is: how can I extract for eg. programs .cab files from .image or .nbh ROM?
I want to get original Mobile Opera 9.5 from R2AA UK Generic ROM, because some other version of opera overwritten it and I don't want it - just need original one back.
Check this thread in Development and Hacking, a tool to view files inside nbh ROM files: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=377514
Thanks! It helped. Is it also a way of cooking a new custom rom?
Edit:
I exported the file... but its "hidden" without option to make it visible. How to make it normally visible?
I'd really kick back, make yourself a couple of weeks worth of coffee and read, read read and then read some more.
There's quite a lot in the wiki on how to cook roms, which serves as a good start but to do it properly it will help to know some of the background to what you're doing.
Hence the reading.
FWIW I've just started playing with ervius visual multilang kitchen, it's quite nice, much better than some of the others. Do a search on it if you want to find it and try visualkitchen_v2_1
Of course it's a bit worrying that you want to cook your own roms, without knowing what's inside the one you're using.
IF you want the opera from r2aa and you're using a stock unmodified R2aa then look in windows (using a proper file explorer such total commander)
or use the search on here, as the one I posted has been linked a huge amount of times already, including 3 times in the past 2 days. .

Big folder (or series of folders) on the SD card with a text doc listing what does what. that's what I do..

A method for more speed , more free memory on the phone.

Here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=493628 is a method for compressing the .exe files of the phone. I successfully have compressed 104 .exe files of windows folder . By doing this, every program run faster (smaller loading times) and you save space because every program is smaller . I earn about 12 mb. Untill now everything seems to work ok. This is the list of the 104 .exe files of windows that i successfully have compressed. The phone has been extremely fast. If you want to try it , do it on your own risk..

Intersting concept, i assume the speed gain is from the extra memory?
Is there a downside to this? Do the compressed applications take longer to load when you wish to use them as the device would have to decompress the file before using it?
And what method have you used for compressing?
Interesting
Yea this does seem interesting.
I'm gonna watch this one.
i can't see how compressing the files could make the device faster though, 12 of storage is nothing, you would need system memoryto make the device run faster???
if the files where to be compressed and still be able to execute with out a decompressing of the files then hay thats cool, but im not sure if thats possible.
The phone IS faster when you press some things. My english isn't good enough to describe it but , many things are faster. It is not my imagination . For example camera is loading faster i think, and when i press start-settings-system , it opens almost immediately. First it needed some seconds. I believe that the loading times are smaller because files are smaller , and the reading time is not the best by the storage memory used by the phone. By making files smaller , loading times are better even though the files are compressed . I am not sure for the theory but the phone works better. Look and at the link i gave. I only posted here so you know about the link. Also you earn storage space without loosing anything!
i did the same some time ago. i also compressed dll-files. now the diamond IS FASTER.
i used "upx mobile". try it yourself.
beginners question
i tried this method and copied the file in to the windows folter with total commander - over active-sync I could not overwrite the files. But now even less space is available..
aand.. when i copied all the files it asked me only about 5 times if i wanted to overwrite this file... so my explanation is that these are files which are stored in the rom.. so they got not overwritten but only doubled...
is this possible? and what can I do about it?
=> the problem is of course the data-memory and not the programm-memory => it really seems that the files are doubled...
i tried to move the packed files back to the diamond, but its nearly impossible....
the file listing is slow, i cant move them back because the diamond doubled the files, it doesnt ask to overwrite...
i tried it with total commander
so now i copied all files to \windows\
and now i have only 1mb of space free.....................
something must have gone wrong...
can someone please post a guide how to copy the packed files back to the diamond
€dit: so now ive rebooeted the diamond, and its very fast and i have 3mb of storage free now, but its not enough... something is wrong
hi
today i tried this method, too. packing was no brob, but copying back compressed files into windows folder failed with nearly every file of 105 because of displayed write protect error message. only 2 or 3 files worked in the end.
also i compressed tomtom.exe. but after that loading time did not increase. was more the other way arround!
in the end i replaced all compressed files by originals again...

I imagine you only had 3mb of storage left because the files you were trying to overwrite were stored in ROM...which you cann't overwrite. Instead Windows stores your new compressed version in storage. Effectively you have two copies of each of those files on your device; 1 copy in ROM and 1 copy in storage. This technique for compressing exe's is probably only useful for new applications installed on your device (like Opera & TomTom) or if you were to cook a new ROM with the compressed exes.
Error
This sounds great! But i get this, when trying to compress: upx: 3_Compressed\MobileCalculator.exe: CantPackException: .NET files (win32/net) are not yet supported.
Any idea?
Edit: hmm.. i only get the error with these files for now: MobileCalculator.exe, tdsserver.exe, WelcomeCenter.exe, AdvancedConfig.exe...
Other .exe's compress just fine..
