Debating the need to purchase a dedicated GPS (leaning towards TomTom 730T). Primary use is in rental cars in US & Europe. I currently use google maps (free, plus telenav doesn't support Euorpe) which is somewhat OK for walking around, but does not have features important while driving such as voice prompts, good views for driving, etc. It also seems to be very slow to find sats when first starting up and seems to loose them easier than dedicated units. What experience have others had with using their Kaiser for a GPS while driving? How well does TomTom software work? How does it compare to dedicated TomTom. Other software you'd recommend? Has anyone purchased the US/Canada version and then purchased and used EU maps?
I have read other posts but they seem to focus mostly on getting stuff to work, not on how well it works compared to other alternatives.
Thanks,

I use the TomTom on my phone. It works great. I've never used it in Europe though.
I purchased the European version of TomTom for my Kaiser and then added the USA and South Africa later. I love it! Less stuff to lug around. As far as I know there are no missing features in TomTom on the Kaiser, but I don't own a separate TomTom.
If you go the Kaiser approach, be sure to bring your car charger on every trip! The GPS will eat your battery rather quickly...
x30 versions will have the IQ routes and the "reality view", and, at least for now, the pda version does not have. Besides that, nothing else is different

What is "reality view?"
eskostar, thanks for that. So do you know if Nav 6 is the same as the 720/920?
I believe he's referring to lane guidance which, if it works, could be a huge benefit on some interchanges. Instead of hearing 'keep left' it gives a diagram of all the lanes and shows which specific one(s) you should be in. 'keep left' when there are 9 lanes to choose from can be a bit confusing.
Reality view is indeed what has been explained, check the image for an example:

Btw for those who understand french, it seems that TomTom is hinting on a Tom Tom v8 for pda soon, together with Touch Diamond.
http://www.gpsandco.com/articles/newsitem.php?id=5373
I see that's a nice feature. Though I wonder if it would make the maps bigger. Also, I don't know if I'd want to trust it as much as it looks like I would want to since its "real." I will with hold judgement until I can try it in my area.
I use TomTom 6 on my Tytn 2 almost everyday with the UK maps and it performs very well, never crashed once since I had my phone in Nov 07, not had one problem with it.
I also have a dedicated but a little old TomTom Go 700, did a side by side comparison on calculating a route from Wales UK to Italy and the Tytn 2 calculated the route a lot faster, even had much better GPS reception and was faster to lock on to satellites than the dedicated TomTom Go 700
Also the rendering speed of TomTom 6 on my Tytn 2 is very quick, can prove that with a video if required
I will probably never use a dedicated sat nav again because of the convenience of having everything in a small package.
The travel kits consist out of:
Kaiser
TomTom6 6 installed
Maps of the country I have to go loaded on StorageCard
Blueant supertooth light (for handsfree and voice directions).
One gadget, all functions, that's actually the reason WHY I got a Kaiser.
Best of all the supertooth light charges through the same cigarette light USB charger as the Kaiser ---> sweeeeeeeeeeeeet
Here's the version history from TomTom
http://www.tomtom.com/support/product.php?ID=1401&Language=4&FID=6420
Am I correct that the most current version of Nav6 that works on Kaiser is 6.032? If so is it then off the bottom of this list? OR, is there something I'm missing in TT's versioning?
Thanks,

Ja - Yes it does - strange isn't it

I use the GPS in my kaiser fairly frequently with google maps. I mostly know where I'm going so haven't felt the need to buy any expensive software, such as Tom Tom, but if I were using it enough to justify that, I'd probably go ahead and buy a stand alone unit for the nice, large screen and not having to worry about draining my phone battery.
One word of caution: Don't try navigating by holding your phone up in front of your face and using the satellite view of google maps! It's not real time...
I bought my ATT Tilt almost exclusively for the GPS. With My job has me traveling all over the lower 48 states in the US, and I use the MSLive search combined with GPS Test for satellite tracking .exclusively. It doesn't have voice prompts, and a few of the other options of the stand alone units. For free and reliable you can't be to picky. There is a UK version also I believe.
I have had two prior TomToms and have donated them to my daughters. I travel a lot (Executive Platinum on American) all over the states and I have converted to TomTom Nav6 on my Tilt. It is WONDERFUL.
I no longer have the extra charger and extra TomTom to worry about leaving in a rental car or wishing that I had it out of my bag already. Or I left it in the hotel cause I was just going out to eat.
I ALWAYS have it now and can use it while WALKING or biking etc.

Hi All,
Now that we happily enabled our GPS on our Trinity / D810 device, the next logical thing to do is the GPS software (of course)! I have been using some GPS software with great success since the days of my O2 Mini and also tested some which works great on the Trinity (WM5 : AKU 3.3 w internal GPS).
Here's some short report. Pls feel free to add any other success here. If you face any problems, do click on the link provided (it's a great way to spend some quality time by troubleshooting with your Trinity ;-)

Click HERE for Step by Step Guide to install Garmin Que and getting it to work with NMEA GPS receivers using GPSProxy (freeware) E.g. Trinity internal GPS is NMEA
Credits : www.malsingmaps.com
Pros : Frequently updated free maps (Malaysia/Singapore), great user community, locally updated POI, Voice navigation, a lot of help from local enthusiast, auto night mode, connectivity to desktop application (MapSource) to download tracks, points & maps.
Cons : Rather 'flat' 2D navigation, require a 'proxy' to convert NMEA (std GPS output) to Garmin protocol, no option to 'leave backlight on', 'proxy' might be difficult to setup for new users
Have been faithfully using this software because of the frequent and more importantly FREE (yes there is such thing as FREE in this world) map available for Malaysia / Singapore. And best of all, it's routable, meaning it can generate turn-by-turn instruction form point A to point B. It also have a great address search capabilities.
Using Garmin Que, you can gain the most by applying the free and frequently updated map from MalSingmaps.com to be up to date in the 'ever changing' roads of Malaysia. The local community also share places to eat (local food) and other local POI (Point of Interest). For those staying or planning to visit Malaysia / Singapore, this is definitely the BEST addition to your GPS enabled Trinity / Dopod D810!
If you have difficulty setting up GPS proxy on the D810, visit this forum for some resolution, Click HERE for some common problem with GPSproxy on D810/838 pro. If you find using GPSproxy a bit of a pain in the *** (like I do), you can go for the commercially available solution GPSGate. I am using this an I find this very good, since there are other advance features such as on-line location sharing & tracking, GPS simulation and many more .. Note : There is some compatibility issue with GPSgate and some softwares. If you find problems loading virtual comm ports, click HERE for some resolutions.

Working GPS Software for the new D810 GPS enable ROM : Malaysia / Singapore : MioMap
2 . MioMap v3.2
Compatibility : WM5, WM6 & Win2003SE (not tested)
Website : Click HERE to go MioMap Website
Map Download : Click HERE to see available Maps from MioMap Website
Language Download : Click HERE to see available language from MioMap Website
Pros : Nice clean 3D interface, 'Skinable', landscape / portrait mode, 'one finger' operation, backlight always on option, plenty of voice language, good POI (a local restaurant outside my house is also available), no need 'proxy' to work, ability to add 'speedcam'.
Cons : cannot use malsing map (no frequent updates map), no connectivity to desktop (Such as upload log, trail, etc to desktop such as Garmin Mapsource for editing), map not so correct (the road outside my house is drawn wrongly-not the fault of the GPS software but the actual map itself)
I have just started testing this program. I works well using the available maps (for Malaysia / Singapore and Hong Kong as well) although the maps are not as updated as the MalSing ones. The road outside of my house is drawn wrongly (a problem with the map, not the software itself). Overall, this software has a clean interface and can be used with one finger mode. You can also change the 'skin' of the software to your liking (see image above, the first 2 pict is the default skin and the 3rd is a different skin). It also works right out of the box. Just set the GPS to use Comm 9 and it will work with the Trinity internal GPS.
It also features a great 3D mode. Visit the official MioMap Website to see a demo of the software!
3 . Garmin Mobile XT
Compatibility : WM5, Plam OS, Win2003SE (not tested)
Website : Click HERE to go Garmin Website
Unofficial Review : Click HERE to see unofficial review and additional screenshot
Pros : Nice 3D interface, can use MalSing Map (see post on Garmin Que), 'one finger' operation, new 'fresh' and updated interface compared to Garmin Que
Cons : Cannot use Trinity internal GPS!!
I have just started testing this program. It loads well on the Trinity and it presents a fresh new 3D & 'one finger' operation interface compared to the old Garmin Que. It also shares the same map with Garmin Que (meaning MalSing maps can be used!). It also inteface with the desktop software Garmin Mapsource well.
However, the BIGGEST drawback is the requirement for this software to work with Garmin GPS 10 bluetooth receiver! This render this software almost un-usable as it cannot work with Trinity's internal GPS receiver ... What a waste. Looks like Garmin Que is going to be in my Trinity for a while until other solution can be found ...

Website : Click HERE to go Smart2Go Website
Free Download : Click HERE to download Smart2go
3D Software Preview : Click HERE to see smart2go 3D in action (uTube)
2D Software Preview : Click HERE to see smart2go 2D in action (uTube)
Pros : Nice 3D interface, updated POI through Wi-Fi/3G connectivity, Free to use
Cons : turn-by-turn navigation requires purchase of additional services
I have just started testing this program. It loads well on the Trinity and the best feature of this software is it's capabilities to connect to the website to download up-to-date information E.g if you plan to visit a new location, you can connect online and download latest to-do, attractions, POI etc. there's even insight guide and smart travelling tips! Time to trow away the tour guide ;-)
Warning : Becareful not to download anything from your phone while 'roaming'. The software could connect your phone to the internet to download 'new maps'. If you are not on the 'unlimited data' package, you should not be using this feature or else your could be charged a huge bill at the end of the month. There is an alternative way to download the map from your PC and load it into the memory card of your phone (called Maploader). Can download it from HERE.

Alvin, where are the Malaysian maps for Mio? There appear to be none in the link above. Actually, I can't even find the download page for this software. Can you tell me where to download it from?
Oh, I downloaded Navio from www.handango.com - I haven't got to grips with it yet as this is the first time I've used GPS, but you can get a trial download and it works on the Trinity right out of the box, and finds 12 satellites remarkably quickly.
Also, do you know where to get Malaysian maps for this free TomTom thing that comes with the ROM upgrade? I need maps for the Sungai Petani, Butterworth and Penang areas.
Thanks and BR,

Mio is a commercial product and you need to purchase the map for it and as far as I can find, I have not come across Malaysia map for TomTom.
The best Malaysian map so far is still the Garmin map by Malsing http://www.malsingmaps.com/forum/index.php
Alvin, how about Malaysian maps for Smart2Go? I just installed it but cannot find anywhere to d/l the maps? I can find "download cities" on the app itself but no country maps except Singapore. Sorry to be a pest
Edit: Just spent a lot more time with this. I have installed the Mapking app together with the malsing map and it all works a charm.
Mapking software and maps (3 day trial) : http://www.mapking.com/en/MK10/MK10_Dowload_Eng.htm#Malaysia
Try Google Maps & Windows Live Search for Mobile
I have installed both Google Maps and Windows Live search for mobile and have to say both work really well.
You get turn by turn directions and GPS positioning, but they are both only 2d and no voice guidance.
In New Zealand, the mapping is accurate for both, and you get satellite imagery or vector street maps.
Just remember that both require a data connection. Windows Live caches a few mb's of maps so you might not need to keep downloading. Google Maps doesn't cache at all.
I tried Smart2Go but the map download didn't work (as it seems for many people).
Can you please tell me which gps softwares provide maps for the ME, I have found none till now except for smart2go, which has a really lame map for the place where I live (Qatar) . I would really appreciate it. (Qatar/ME/Gulf)
Thanx,
Ak
I just bought my Dopod D810 and it had Mapking 2007 with malaysian map preinstalled. I'm not really satisfied about it because randomly this program hangs with error message 'RT error: storage out'. Kind of annoying.....
that's weird.. mapking2007 works fantastic for me. Do you have it installed in main memory or storage card? have you tried reinstalling the program or looking for a newer build?
Does any one know of there is a complete map of Thailland? For non PDA it is available I have seen in cars, but for PDA I can't find.
The same company that puts out MapKing makes one called PowerMap Thailand. You can google it for details or look at this link: http://www.matlastech.com/
You can download Bangkok and Thailand highway maps for MapKing from here http://www.mapking.com/en/MK7/MK7_Dowload_Eng.htm
hope you find what you're looking for..
I'm not planning going to Malaysia anytime soon, but I really enjoyed your Side-to-side comparison. Nice Job!
Thanks

I had this problem too but only when I first turned on Mapking G10 (not mapking 2007) indoors. Once it got a gps fix then no more errors.
Not sure if this will help u.
I have Mapking installed installed on the storage card. Unfortunately I don't have any installation files so I can't install it again on main memory.
I also get the error message when I'm outside and the GPS is fixed.
Mostly I get it while calculating the route and sometimes while I'm driving.
Anyway, now I'm using Garmin Que in combination with GPSProxy and it works fantastic !

VisualGPSce - Free, gives great information such as satellite signal strength in a bar chart, satellite azimuth & elevation, panel with dial to show your current horizontal and vertical speed - heading - elevation. Great for many things including ensuring the GPS is working.
Earthcomber - Free software and Free maps, tracking location finding your way around is a breeze with this software. The vector graphics type maps make it very compact. I fit all of California with barely a dent in my 2G card. More services available for a fee as well. Directions require a connection, either cell or wifi.
Google Maps - Free software and Free maps, but requires connection either cell or wifi. Got to love those satellite views!
I use all three without any problems.
i'm using garmin mobile xt
that application have a good 3D

TomTom for teh win!

Great info! thanks
iGuidance 3.0. It's much better than the new 4.0 because 4.0 got rid of the map-generation software, so you have to copy a total of nearly 2GB to your device, instead of just what you need.

I thought I-Go was for Europe only. Do you have a link to any info. for a North America version?
I've been testing a lot of programmes on Kaiser:
- TomTom 6.032
- Navigon 6.2
- Garmin Mobile XT
- Copilot Live 6
- Automapa 4.1.2
TomTom:
Seems to be an automatic choice for many. It is good as always, but I noticed a few glitches comparing to its operation on Hermes with BT GPS SirfStar III receiver. Namely, it runs fine and suddenly it freezes. After some 3 kilometres it starts operating again. It also goes crazy on roundabouts. If you know the area it's ok, but imagine driving on a motorway in a foreign country. Wrong exit on estacade and you face 50km+ of extra road.
Navigon:
On Hermes with Schaps ROM it wasn't even usable, runs a few seconds and then freezes for a couple of minutes in menu! I didn't get to checking the navigation aspect. On Kaiser it seems to run more smoothly than TomTom, however it takes about 30-40 seconds to start. Some post codes in the UK are missing and when typing in the postcode you don't see the street name as in TT and when you decide to navigate there you cannot add a number.
For me it's the best looking navigation software on the market at the moment with nicely rendered POI Icons. If you drive by BP, Texaco etc. you can see the proper icon with symbol of the petrol station. The same with car dealers. At the moment for me personally is the default software. Routes are very similar to those from Garmin.
Garmin Mobile XT:
Not as smooth as Navigon, about the same as TomTom, however I noticed that it seems as if it tried to catch up the actual position for most of the time. Sometimes when you have to turn left and almost immediately right, you do it, but it still shows your position before. And that sucks. However it's got a brilliant feature no other software has. Namely, Mapsource. You install software with maps on your PC. Then let's say you drive from London to Rimini in Italy. You don't need all Europe countries (as usually in Western Europe packs from other companies). You can ask the program to find a route (just as on the ppc) and then choose just those pieces of map that run along the route. They are not square, the maps are divided in some puzzle like pieces.
Copilot Live 6:
Software provided with Kaisers from e.g. T-Mobile UK. You can choose 1 region like UK and Ireland or the Alps for free. It works fine. Free camera updates. It runs pretty ok, but it looks so uncool. Graphics is no match for TT or Navigon. However it can really satisfy the needs of an average user.
Automapa:
Polish software available in two packs. Only Poland and Western/Central Europe. It seems to be the fastest of them all. Graphics is good. In Poland you don't have just numbers, if it's a housing estate or an area with blocks of flats you can see separate blocks with numbers on them. The small problem is that you cannot find addresses using post codes in the UK.

They do have up to date Canada & US maps. I do not have the link handy, but if your do a google seach, you will find the info.
Was using Tomtom 6
Just switched to iGO and happy with it.
Waiting for iGO 2008 to be released.
Garmin XT. Mans brand GPS.
Tom Tom not for men.
I would be using Garmins XT if only they packaged it so I can use it on my SD card rather than theirs (yes, I am aware of the workarounds for this). Preference for Garmin is because I already own many Garmin devices and maps. I went to Newark last week and, rather than take one of my Garmins, I decided to give Nav4All a try. The interface is somewhat confusing until you get the hang of it but it did a respectable job of getting me around town. I will probably continue to use it when navigating at a flown-to destination and use my Garmins in my own vehicles.
I hate to be the new guy who asks the question that is repeated all over the forum, but I did a search and was unable to find a good answer to my question. I am mainly concerned with which has the best features that doesn't use any kind of data connection. Also which software can i buy and put on my 8gb micro sd? i know some come on 2gb cards and I would rather use my own card. Also is there any kind of chat for the forum? I feel terrible asking stupid questions on the forum.
There is no "the best" in the real world.
None of below GPS navigator application use data connection, unless you want some extra features like weather, traffic etc...
1. tomtom 6.
2. Garmin XT, however, it locked to pre-installed included microsd. If you want to copy it to your card then you have to know some ways to generate the new key.
3. Destinator 6. Version 7 comes with text to speech, but it is not available for America.
4. CoPilot Live 7 comes with microSD, but I don't if it is locked or not.
5. iGuidance V4. Text to speech is included. The only one comes with 14 days trial, but the trial version doesn't work on PPC.
I'm running 1. and 2.
thanks for the reply. what i meant by the data connect comment was all the bells and whistles suck as real time traffic and all, but out of tom tom and garmin which do you use or like the most?

Well, it's hard to answer b/c I don't have hands-on experience on the others.
In America and countries which tomtom maps are available, tomtom is my choice. I run Garmin because it makes maps that tomtom doesn't.
I think I may try iGuidance v4 if tomtom won't launch a newer version for PDA. However, iGuidance v4 still has its problem, for example, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=368373.
I've been using Route 66 on my Kaiser -- with full US maps, it takes just a bit more than 4GB, so it'll fit on a 6 or 8GB microSDHC. Its maps are pretty good, but probably getting to be a bit dated; when I bought it 2+ years ago, its maps were brand new, but they haven't been updated AFAIK.
Yeah, i travel to US often i see my friend using Telenav on his tilt. It sucks.
If you drive fast, you dont see the map getting updated, even with HSDPA on. [Ofcourse there is a disclaimer, do not use while driving].
In my opinion, TomTom is good. I have for both Europe and US.
For US, it takes a bit more than 1GB. Its quite good and user friendly as well!!
If I had a nickel for every time there was a thread like this I would be drinking a nice cold coke.
Golf software?
While we're on the topic of NA GPS sw, I haven't founf many suggestions for golf sw that's got plenty of US courses. Any suggestions?
I'm using TomTom 6, but I recently became concerned with the age of the maps. In Philadelphia, it cannot find Veteran's Stadium (demolished in 2004), which would indicate that that maps are from at least 2005. But at the same time, it can't find Lincoln Financial Field [Philadelphia Eagles] or Citizen's Bank Park [Philadelphia Phillies], both of which opened in 2004.
I paid for $70 for the latest maps through TomTom Home, but who knows, maybe they just didn't copy to the device right...
I dont think its necessarily TomTom's fault for the maps, except that they charged you for them. I use google maps and there are many things that aren't on the maps that have been there for at least 2 years. It seems that maps in general from all sources need updated.... Its why i like nautical charts... updated weekly... too bad i cant find a good cheap/ free nautical navigation program.

Just a note to everyone looking for GPS software for the Kaiser. I know many of you don't like the menacing machine of google, but google maps combined with the built in GPS works great. It also gives you the ability to look at a map, satalite overview as well as traffic.
Google Maps is really good not disputing that, but they need to update the maps and imagery... There are places that are no longer around in my town that are listed on the maps. And some of these places have been gone for years.

I use googe maps combined with the built-in gps as well. It's extremely user friendly. It's almost dummy proof, lol, and has a nice gui too. Like in a previous post, it seems that many, if not all, gps programs have outdated maps ranging from 1 to 3 years, possibly more. I read somewhere that Google Maps' imagery (and Google Earth' s imagery) are 2 to 3 years ago due to National Security. I wouldnt be surprised if Tom Tom, Igo, Garmin, and other GPS programs used outdated maps as well.
If there were a system to supply updated maps for comm GPS programs like there is for nautical systems, that would be fricking sweet. Or a program that lets you use/ view nautical charts. I'm a mariner by trade so I love using GPS tools.
i have tried this http://gpsvp.garminmapsearch.com/ it works great
Hi folks,
It seems that many of us are notcing a huge lag on our GPS while navigating...
Others seem that they don't have any lag...
What do I mean by lag? Well, for example, if I'm passing under a bridge, my GPS software shows me still behind the bridge. Sometimes, the lag is more than 5 seconds...
The image bellow is a excelent example:

In order to sort out what could be the cause of this lag, I took the iniciative of opening this thread.
What I expect from you guys, is that you tell if you have a lag or not, by voting on the poll (to have a statistic overview) and also by telling in your post, if you have the lag or not, and specify:
1-What ROM you're using
2-Which Diamond you have: DIAM100, DIAM 140, etc... (visible in bootload mode)
3-Which Radio you're using
4-Where do you live, or use the device
5-Which GPS software you use
6-How much free memory before and after using the GPS navigation software
7-Which HardSPL do you have installed
8- Which software do you have installed on your device
9-The GPS software (the executables, not the maps!) are installed in the phone memory, or in the storage?

1-What ROM you're using
Currently TLR V3 but have used original stock UK, TLR V1 and V2
2-Which Diamond you have: DIAM100, DIAM 140, etc... (visible in bootload mode)
UK Diamond - DIAM100.
3-Which Radio you're using
Currently 1.00.25.06 but have used my stock radio 1.00.25.03 and 1.00.25.05, all have been excellent but have noticed 1.00.25.06 gives me a little better GPS accuracy when pinpointing my position.
4-Where do you live, or use the device
I live in South Wales UK.
5-Which GPS software you use
Always use TomTom 7 for car navigation and use Google Maps now and again.
6-How much free memory before and after using the GPS navigation software
Mine varies a lot as I sometimes have many apps open, but usually I have 25-35mb free ram when using TomTom 7.
7-Other info you may feel useful
Nothing I can think of, but I never had any lag whatsoever on my phone using multiple radios and roms. GPS accuracy is extremely accurate, when viewing my my location in Google Maps using GPS it puts the dot directly on top of my house and in the right room to. about 2ft out

It's in my sig, am using HardSPL OliNex 1.40 Developer Edition.
When driving I have never experienced that problem, as soon as I am about to go under a bridge TomTom 7 is spot on, same with round about, if I am halfway way around a round about TomTom 7 also says it's halfway around it.
Never had any lag with my old Tytn 2 or my Diamond.
And which software do you have installed on your device?....

1-What ROM you're using
Stock NLD 1.37.403.3
2-Which Diamond you have: DIAM100, DIAM 140, etc... (visible in bootload mode)

3-Which Radio you're using
1.00.25.03
4-Where do you live, or use the device
East Netherlands. I use my Diamond mostly in west and in between and West Germany.
5-Which GPS software you use
Sygic and iGo (iGo has a better navigation in cities and Sygic outside of cities). TomTom also works fine, but i prefer Sygic/iGo.
6-How much free memory before and after using the GPS navigation software
About 52 MB available before and 49/50 MB after.
7-Other info you may feel useful
I have no lag with my Diamond GPS
TF3D is off!!
I constantly update GPS locations using QuickGPS

No lag whatsoever, did have a problem after the flash where i could not get a lock, fixed that with the HTC GPS TOOLS and its "Nav. Init" buttion fuction whatever that does, and now it works great.
From i push the TomTom icon in program till i have a lock takes 22 seconds, when iam inside - actually on the toilet.
I don't think it has to do with the gps, I have the lag too on Igo8 and Tomtom 7, but if you do a preview of the trip both on tomtom and Igo its like its running on 3-4 fps, ndrive works perfectly! So the problema I think is just about optimization of the programs. On my Trinity both worked fine and with much more frames, not like this.
Hi,
Could you please post the specs that were asked in the first post?
It would be useful
If I understand what you meant, is that you telling it could have to do with video aceleration...However, I tested with an external Bluetooth GPS receiver, and it worked perfectly...No lag whatsoever...
So, this means that VGA is out of the equation...unless, when using the external receiver, the load on the cpu is less (because the aceleration could be unexistant) and then the rendering is smoother...
But it wouldn't make sense, because not all of us has the lag...
At this point, I believe is has something to do with a certain aplication that some of us has installed...or some configuration external to GPS that may be interfering...

It's already in my list, 3rd one down, forgot to put Schaps in front of it, will fix that now
I also leave A-GPS off as after a while it causes my GPS not not work properly, example, running TomTom 7 or any other GPS app with A-GPS on, the app will detect the sats, connect to 8 or 9 of them for a split second, disconnect and then attempt to connect to them again, does this over and over. Turning A-GPS off fixes this problem.
Have had that problem on all ROMS and radios I have tried, A-GPS used to work perfectly on the Tytn 2 though

I can just give you my input found on testing a lot of ROM's and different GPS maps, incl. passive GoogleMaps (which is a good benchmarkingtool)
1. I had lag on TYTNII and have lag on Diamond ONLY when using the on-board - CPU combined SirfIII.
2. In all ROM's Assisted GPS is disabled.
3. tested 5 own manufactured + 4 competition Bluetooth receivers and found NO lag in Garmin XT, Mapking 2007, mapkingV7 and papago.
Lag was still identified , though less than with internal GPS, in Google Maps at oversized zoom. (3G used in same environment and same daily routing, so no impact here)
Should we not point the finger to the CPU?
When internal GPS used, I got a constant 95% CPU usage to 100%
With external GPS, CPU consumes 75% on average which migh secure correcte Map rendering maybe?
Hope I am correct (and that it is not ROM related) as I need to promote our external GPS solutions ;-)
No lag for me whatsoever.. Details are:
1-What ROM you're using
Dutty's Hybrid v2 - I have also used Bepe's 0.95, Walshieau's Elite 3.0 and none of them have had any GPS lag
2-Which Diamond you have: DIAM100, DIAM 140, etc... (visible in bootload mode)
DIAM100
3-Which Radio you're using
1.00.25.03 and now 1.00.25.05 - neither lag

5-Which GPS software you use
Nav N Go iGo 8, TomTom 7

7-Which HardSPL do you have installed
1.40.Olinex Developer Edition Unsigned
8- Which software do you have installed on your device
Everything that came with Dutty's Hybrid, PocketCM, PCM Keyboard

8- Which software do you have installed on your device
INstalled: TotalCmd and taskmgr
UNinstalled (or stopped services): TF3D, EnargeStartMenu, LargeTitleBar, HTCvolume, SqmUpload..
9-Other info you may feel useful
There is a huge difference with all services on.
With HTC EnlargeStartMenu and LargeTitleBar both off icon's are showing OK again (sometimes they where a bit strange).
With TF3D off my sync-software (for iMac) Eltima Syncmate also works perfect.
With TF3D on, it doesn't work.
Everything stock 1.93 WWE installed.
About 1 second lag, I find that very acceptable.
What software have used to determine CPU usage on handset? Thank you!

Hi Folks,
First of all, I'm really sorry for posting a 'diet' question like this, but even though I've owned it for some time, my Kaiser has remained untouched so far and I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on definitive action...
OK I've got the device for three main reasons - 1) To have push mail and web (of sorts) in my pocket, 2) To provide internet connectivity to my laptop when needed, 3) to be a pretty competent Sat Nav device.
This evening I noticed a little complication with point 3 - Up to now I've been using TomTom Navigator 6 and more recently TomTom 7.910 - I thought the performance was pretty decent, at the very least acceptable - I've been using a TomTom Traffic & Cameras subscription. Today I subscribed to the pocketgpsworld safety camera database and set alerts for the 'speed zoned complete' version.
I took my kaiser out on a little drive just now and I was pretty shocked at the amazing performance degredation TomTom is suffering now that it's got to think about a few POIs at the same time - it really was pretty woeful.
I guess I'm not the first person to note this, so I was wondering is there anything that can be done - tweaks or even a replacement ROM that might deliver some more horsepower to TomTom Navigator?
For the record I'm not bothered about the Kaiser doing anything else 'fancy' - if ActiveSync will work with an Exchange server, and Pocket IE (I know it sucks but Opera and Skyfire don't flick my switch either) will give me basic web functionality, my only other concern is TomTom...
Does anyone have any advice? All suggestions are most gratefully received!
Thanks and regards,
Rob.
Speed up TomTom
First: What Rom do you use? If it's the stock one, there's probaly a problem with the driver (custom http://www.htcclassaction.org / Intell Omnia drivers). It's best to flash your Kaiser where the drivers already are in it.
To speed up TomTom and use POI's:
step 1: Hide all POI's.
- change prefences
- Show POI on map
Be sure that NOTHING is on (like in my screenshot)
step 2: Warn near POI's
- Manage POIs
- Warn when near POI
- Be SURE to turn OFF Warn only if POI is on route (otherwise it will not always warn you).
Now it doesn't load all the POI's tot the map constantly and it will run much smoother

Hey.. I had the same problem (with TT 7.4)... I foudn after I added all the POI's, I unchecked almost all but the most needed.. Then from that point on, I can still get direction to ANY of the POI's (checked or unchecked) and it still shows all the ones I want it to when drivign around... and the map lag is now non-existant... Hope this helps..

Hi,
Thanks for your response
At the moment my Kaiser (branded T-Mobile Vario III) is running the stock T-Mobile ROM which it shipped with quite a few (between 6 and 9) months ago.
I've just disabled all 'Show POIs on Map' and left the 'Warn when near POI' enabled for the safety cameras.
I ran a route demo and it seems to be a little improved, probably to a level which is approaching acceptable.
I tried again having disabled HTC Home from the Today screen which seemed to free up a little memory.
I'm curious about your mention of the display drivers - I'd read the class action website some time ago and was aware of display driver issues. I'm interested in your mention of alternatives, but not quite sure I follow what you mean exactly...
Is there an improved driver which I can install on my Kaiser with the current ROM?
And/or, are there 'community' ROMs available which have an improved display driver installed?
Any further help you can offer on those points would be great!
Thanks again,
Rob.

You can try the CAB file (download, copy to phone, run it on phone)
Kaiser and Nike drivers: download as seen on

BUT also they noticed that almost every rom included the drivers.
Also Intell Drivers work great (ripped from Omnia)

Thanks very much for the information - I'm going to dump the stock ROM from my Kaiser and hopefully reconstruct it before I go any further (I've been doing a lot of reading about how to do that today); and then I think I'll give the CAB a go.
If that doesn't yield good results I'm going to give the AthineOS ROM a try -I'd been looking at various ROMs available and the AthineOS looked to be the kind of thing I like (I've used Schaps (with a bit of stripping-out) and CRCs ROMs on my Hermes and the AthineOS for Kaiser looks similar in style) - I noted that it's described as very fast (which I like the sound of!), and I saw mention of replaced display drivers in the thread - I just wasn't certain at first which were used, and crucially, whether they would benefit TomTom.
Your recommendation and confirmation of a performance increase in TomTom is exactly the information I'd been looking for, so thank you very much!

I had done quite a bit of searching after your first reply before I asked more questions, but I couldn't quite find conclusive answers to the particular questions I then had. I promise Search and Wiki are always my first ports-of-call before I post questions to the board (I'm admin at a car forum and completely understand frustration when people repeat questions as a result of not checking existing resources!).
Sincere thanks again,
Rob.
PS> I'll update this thread with the results of my actions so that searches by others in future might be useful...
Just a quick update for the record...
On reading the link to the driver progress page on HTCClassAction.org I saw the statement "As far as we know, there is NO 6.0 ROM that is compatible with these drivers." - so I didn't bother attempting to install the driver directly to my current ROM.
I've dumped my T-Mobile stock ROM and made sure I've got the reconstructed OS ROM, a suitable SPL and the boot/splash screens ready should I wish to go back for any reason.
I've just flashed AthineOS (the WM6.1 version not the just-released test WM6.5 version)...
Well, I'm extremely impressed...
The ROM itself is nice and snappy, navigating around menus etc. is very quick indeed...
Now, we come to the all important TomTom performance...
So I've got the pocketgpsworld safety camera database (Speed-Zoned Complete version) running, with 'Warn when near POI' set for each category with 15 seconds warning for fixed and the pgpsw recommened setting for mobile/pmobile cameras...
It's CONSIDERABLY faster - MUCH more fluid in the turns - frame-rate is considerably higher (not measured, just perceived with mark one eyeball) and there's little or no 'visual lag' is evident whatsoever. It's a completely dark and light transformation. I'll be more than happy using it every day now.
It's worth noting that I've still not got any POIs 'shown on map' - this doesn't prevent warnings, or indeed POIs that the application is 'currently' warning about from being shown on the map when required - it simply means that ALL of them aren't on the map at ALL times - so in real terms it makes no difference in the case of safety camera warnings. I did test performance with some categories 'shown on map' and it drops off sharply; but I'm inclined to think that this is more a side effect of mathematical horsepower in the Kaiser being limited (especially when you consider everything else that's running in the background) as opposed to display performance being low.
...In short, I think this software takes about as much advantage of the hardware in the Kaiser as is possible.
I'll join bigchrizzieboy in thoroughly recommending AthineOS if you're a TomTom user...
Thanks again and regards,
A very happy Rob
PS> A donation to b16b for the excellent AthineOS will be on its way in due course...
Well, I've just discovered something else which might prove interesting for anyone wondering about TomTom performance and x,y,z ROM in future...
I've just done a side-by-side comparison of...
My Kaiser running AthineOS and TomTom 7.910 with the pocketgpsworld Speed Zoned Complete safety camera database
and
My Father's TomTom One XL running the most recent NavCore for it (8.014 or something I think), the same safety camera database, the same map and the same warning preferences etc.
...Guess which one delivered better frame/redraw rate?...
That's right (or wrong?)... The Kaiser seems noticably quicker than the dedicated TomTom device! I'm quite shocked!
Regards,
Rob.

Hi,
Thanks again for your help. I've joined 'MapShare' and TTHome has downloaded corrections and it reported that it applied them to my device, is there anything else I need to do?
Regards,
Rob.

Nope, but what you CAN do:
Mapupdates prefences:
Don't know what your settings are, but mine are:
TomTom Home:
Don't know what your already using, but:
You can use it to download free voices, warning sounds, POI's, color schemes.
You can "Pimp your ride":
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-custom-cursors.php
Right mouse button, save as on the "rides" (google tomtom car symbol for more)...
Be sure to save only a couple off cars (about 10), to much will give you an error when trying to change your car symbol.
Save the file's into "Storage Card\ART\CARS\"
- ON YOUR PDA in TomTom: Change prefences, change car symbol
Free Voices thanks to google
Search on google for TomTom voices (some people maked their own) and copy them to "Storage Card\VOICES\"
When chaning voice, TomTom will ask if it must only use voices from your language, answer with NO.
If you've got filenames with the same number just rename them (you don't need to overwrite). examplefiles needed for a voices:
- DATA114.BMP (not needed, you can create it)
- DATA114.CHK
- DATA114.TLV
- DATA114.VIF
POI's made by other people
http://www.poiedit.com/
A site with a free program with many POI's, you need to subscribe some sites first.
Make own POI's pictures
Where your map is placed on your device "Storage Card\MAP NAME\"
Are files like:
- Burger King Sub, The Netherlands.ov2
- Burger King Sub, The Netherlands.bmp
You can simply edit or create BMP files, just give them the same name as the ov2 file.
Enjoy your speedy customized TomTom
