which GPS?

I have had my AT&T Tilt for about a month now. I would like to use it as a GPS also, but i do not want to pay the monthly fee for a data package. What are my options? Can I buy some software? What all does it take to make it work?

I use Route 66 on my Tytn II, but TomTom version 6 is also very good, and is probably the most popular solution.

yeah TT6 is probably the most popular.
iguidance will text2speech and tell you the street name. Tomtom wont. they both do about the same functionality. iguidance uses more accurate streets. Tomtom has bigger buttons.

Right, and worth every penny. They work even when there is no phone service available, very usefull.

tomtom is nice but i like igo more even though it lags a lot more for some reason tomtom is flawless with no lagging.

These programs work with the factory tilt ROM from AT&T? I tried using Windows Live search GPS on the Tilt and it did not work. I tried it on a floor model.
I also tried WLS on a Moto Q Global that I had for 2 days and WLS did not find my GPS either.
I want to get a tilt but I want GPS with WLS and others as well. Would a ROM flash fix this? I was looking at the Sleuth ROM.
I want to know before I try to get one.

I've been running TT6 on my Tilt (stock AT&T rom) since the first week I had the device and it's been fine.
I'm really happy with TT6 as a purchase but I do wish I could plan a route on my PC and then upload it to my phone. I've found TomTom Home (the PC client) to be pretty much usless so far.

Did Windows Live Search work for you? Just curious if it was the floor model that was the issue. I still really want the device even though I have an 8525.

Did you consider the possibility that it didn't work because you were in the store and had no visibility of the sky?? Please tell me you weren't in a shopping mall somewhere trying to do this.
I've tried almost every GPS app out there and every one of them has worked except for Map4PDA. Avoid it like the plague. It will kill your GPS.
You really should try searching the forums. You will find a lot more info. There are TONS of GPS related threads.

I dont think (m)any Kaiser users use or would want to use live search. it's dependent on a signal. Tomtom can be used anywhere on the planet.

OK, now you're comparing WLS to GM. Bad choice because now GM can locate you based on cell towers as well as GPS. WLS can only use GPS.
Either way neither will work well indoors.

What reg setting? I would think it would take much more than a simple reg hack to enable something like that.

it's for our GPS, not wls in specific. Kaisertweak does it. "Assisted GPS"
At least that's my take on what it does.
"Assisted GPS helps the GPS to keep tracking your position when entering areas with bad reception, like tunnels and such. You must have a real GPS lock first for this to work though"

I think a lot of us do. I don't spend much time outside of cell areas. If I ever plan a trip where I think I might, I'll consider the $150 then.
The latest WLS with speech recognition for directory searches is pretty slick considering it's free.

Actually GM has an option to center on GPS. The position with Cell Towers is about a mile off. Obviously I used the GPS.
And again I tried at the store and GM worked with GPS and found where I was at. Then I tried WLS and it found me. But I closed GM and WLS would not find me through GPS any more. So its WLS thats not so good.

I know GM has center on GPS, but it also has Locate Me feature that is unique to GM (uses cell towers). I use both and both work perfectly for me.
GM being a mile off is pretty accurate. They say within 1700 meters, which is almost exactly a mile (1.05633103 miles to be exact).

at&t tilt GPS newbie question

i've just ordered an at&t tilt. i've searched on this forum for gps and tom tom and didnt get anything and so is this post.
will i be able to use the tilt as a gps unit without signing up for the data plan from at&t?
does kaiser have gps hardware built it or is it an addon?
if it does have a gps hardware is built in, what software can i use to use the phone as a gps unit. if there is a thread or post where i can read more, please let me know.

I have no clue how you searched but there are gazillions of threads out there for GPS. Please search again. Just to be nice to you: yes, Tilt/Kaiser does have a built-in hardware for GPS and all you need to do is buy a standalone software such as Tomtom, iGo, etc. With standalone, you don't need to pay for the internet unless you want traffic information.

The kaiser has built in GPS Hardware. Virtually any GPS Software will work with the kaiser. To try it out, GoogleMaps has a built in GPS tool but it needs to download the maps as it goes. TomTom or similar have the maps stored locally which has a lower running cost but costs quite alot initially.

yes it has a built in gps... and you can use Garmin Mobile XT and there a lot of programs..

It works well with iGuidance with the onboard GPS and I don't have a data plan...

I see were this is going, i have advice for you. Just go to walmart and buy a gps navagation system, save yourself and all of us some time since you cant understand the concept of "google search" and "read the wiki"

Did HTC or XDA devs publish a spec sheet? Did anyone ask this question before? Did Google develop the art of searching?

There's a LOT on this and if you only look at the specs, you'll know. In short, it does have GPS and it is usable without an external one.

seriously...I means SERIOUSLY???? Have you ever looked at the back of your Tilt where it says GPS?? or did you never read specs on the tilt or are you unable to understand english??

Yes, the ATT Tilt has GPS
It does have a built-in GPS. This same issue threw me off at first too, until I figured it out..
You flamers shouldn't flame the OP. Actual Kaiser and TyTnII owners may already know about the GPS, but the ONLY part of the "AT&T Tilt" documentation referring to GPS is the brief mention of being able to get TeleNav. I know this because I have one. The specs/box mention that it has GPS, but that's all.
Now if I remember correctly, the GPS is COM3 or COM4 by default (unless you changed it in Start->Settings->System->External GPS). I changed mine to COM0 just for the hell of it, and it functions normally.
TomTom should work just fine, set it to 4800 baud, and try it with each COM port available in the options. It sometimes takes a few minutes for TomTom to display that the GPS is in "connected, but no valid signal yet" mode.
If you want to be able to use your Tilt's GPS as an external for some other device, the best thing I've found is GPSGate, but any COM-port splitter should work (as long as it presents a new Bluetooth and/or Serial service)
GPSGate is also useful since you can tell it to log your GPS data to any URL, à la those logging/who-stole-my-phone programs. It can also multiplex the GPS port for use by multiple programs (but I think that functionality is also built into WM and is called the "GPS Intermediate Driver", but I may be mistaken)

It is definatly listed in the specs of the phone and it says it on the back of the phone. Why would you consider getting a phone without looking at the specs of it first??

GPS stopped working for my ATT TILT
my GPS was working fine. my tomtom was working fine, googlemaps was working fine. then all of a sudden a few weeks ago it just stopped working! usually i would use GPS test to get a working signal and then I would run tomtom and it would work. a few months ago it started to take a much longer time to acquire a valid gps signal (it would take a few to 5 minutes). but now it just doesnt find one at all! is there anything i could do to try to fix this? what com port should it be on? im thinking i mightve changed one of the settings unknowingly. please help!

Hey guys, I just got my tilt. I'm wondering what software you guys recomend. I want to stay away from using gprs. I have SPB mobile 3, live update, and No data so far. What do you recommend for my GPS without having to pay? Recomend what ever you want, Im very interested. Tell me those softwares, you couldn't live without

Thanks, I read all the links and there are some good things in there. I really want to get a good gps 3rd party. Is there no way I can just pay to download the .cab I already have numerous memory cards and dont want to have to pay the extra.

Google offers a good FREE gps program that uses your GPS built into your phone. However, it does require some type of data connection, whether it be through Wifi or GPRS.

Offline GPS Solution for Android? (no data plan needed, just like Windows Mobile GPS)

Ok...in order for me to keep Android on my Touch and not go back to Windows Mobile, there MUST be an offline GPS solution for Android. By that I mean GPS software that reads maps from the SD card and does not need a data connection on the phone at all; like TomTom does on Windows Mobile - it has all the POIs stored on the SD card (including their phone number) so I can get directions, look up numbers, and directly call businesses from the GPS app without ever needing any internet connectivity. I have a 16GB card, so storing maps of the whole USA won't be a problem....did it just fine in WinMo using TomTom...
So, does anyone know of a GPS application that can do this for Android? Having to connect to the internet for GPS maps (like Google maps) is just unacceptable, especially since GPS has been free through satellites for decades now. Bottom line - I just want GPS to work like it did on Windows Mobile...no data plan needed, and maps stored locally on the SD card. Easy and fast.
If this is not possible then it is very apparent that TomTom on WinMo is far superior to any Android GPS solution, and I will be forced to switch back.

it says you have to download the maps through another program called "ContentDroyd"...this defeats the whole purpose of making this work for phones without a data connection.

the newest version of contentdroyd will allow you to download them from a computer instead of through the phone. then you put the maps on sd.

the latest version of ContentDroyd is still just an APK file, so how do you download them on your computer? IS there a public site that has the map files?
Also I read that any vector map format can be used in their compressed map format...does this mean I can use the nicer and more complete TomTom or Garmin map files somehow?

Sometimes you can find public sites, yes. I'm happy to post it if that's within the rules, I'll check. Then you use adb to install it.

I can transfer files directly to my SD card over my USB cable, that is not the problem...I just need a site that has the map file. I can download and transfer them myself manually. Also - why would it be against the rules since the maps are freeware?

Sorry, I didn't mean the maps - I meant the newest mapdroyd and contentdroyd apks so you don't have to download them. You could then install those through adb.

Does the GPS even work well enough with warm donut? I have gotten it to work a few times, but most of the time it struggles to find a signal...

GPS works fine in mine. finally got GPS to work in RLS3 of myn's Warm Donut, but only after I installed GPStest and rebooted. Now I get locks in 30 seconds on a cold start
Anyway, I cannot find the SMD files for the UnitedStates, and if this thing doesn't even do turn by turn directions, then why was it made? Just so you can see a dot on a map? Whooptie do. Android is looking less and less attractive the longer I use it.

Ok I take it back, I just updated my radio to 3.42.5 and looks like GPS is working better than ever! Not sure about not having a dataplan as when I had Windows, it always made an internet connection at first?

No, that is my point...you never needed a data plan/internet connection to use GPS. GPS has always been free up until a few years ago when cell companies started tying data into it through what is called A-GPS (assisted GPS), and also so they could provide local 411 listings, etc. The GPS chip inside our phones works fine by itself to get directions, and do routing and turn by turn, etc (which is software based). No internet connection is needed to use GPS, and it shouldn't ever be.
Ok, my rant about phone companies muddying up true GPS is over...I fear that Android will never be as powerful a Windows Mobile was with GPS. People who think Google Maps and programs like Copilot are great GPS apps, have no clue what they are missing.

my experience tom tom and destinator both worked much better with agps. i used both

Android on the touch is a work in progress. It is a hobby by fueled by enthusiasts, and given that it has come a LONG way in a short time. You shouldn't expect things to "just work", but often they do. (and IMHO better than WinMo.)
Also you are trying to compare a commercial app (Tom Tom) to a freeware alternative (mapDryod). This doesn't mean that it is inferior, but you usually have to pay the cost in time instead of money. Learning and tweaking the application that might not "just work" out of the box.
If Android on the touch isn't working out for you, then feel free to jump in and help get things working. Trollish comments and demanding functionality on threat of dropping Android doesn't help anyone much.

I am not talking about "Android on the Touch"...I am talking about Android in general - NO Android phone in the world can have GPS that can even come close to matching WinMo's available apps. - no complaining here, just a fact now after my research.

better, hmm...yes technically - in terms of getting an initial lock (15 seconds with a data plan, or 30 seconds without data....big deal. once you had a fix it stayed fixed until you rebooted or went into an underground cave or something (came back the second you walked out). Anyway, I have my answer to my original post...might be back on WinMo in a week or so. Bummer.

I have been 100% factual in my statements. Offline GPS routing and maps are not available like they are on WinMo.....that is what I wanted to know when I posted this thread, and I got my answer. I am sorry you don't like the answer.
Besides, I already said I might go back to WinMo in a week.
