ive read some others having this problem, i just got my tilt and if its asleep for a while when i go to wake it up the screen stays black. the lights still flash at the top and the key board back light will sometimes come on but the screen will not come back. Ive tried every button but the only way it seems to come back is taking out the battery and replacing it then turning the phone back on. is this a wide spread problem or just a few devices (warranty worthy?)
any insight would be great
side note: ive only added a few plugins, have not done any thing yet to flash the rom at all - i am weary of trying this now because of the issue im having
Tilt not waking up
Install and run KaiserTweak. If you're running the AT&T Rom I'd change to something else as it's quite buggy.
Some people have suggested that having the automatic device lock enabled causes this, so you may want to try disabling that. Also do a search on here for the "sleep of death", that may help you figure out what's wrong.

My Tilt was working fine while I was listening to music over my bluetooth headset. Suddenly the display went black and I am not able to get it back. I cant even see the startup screen with the AT&T logo. The phone is working perfectly fine and I am able to play music, send and receive call and connect it to my PC and see the display on my computer through MyMobiler. One thing I noticed is that I can see very very feeble display on my screen without any colors. I ordered a replacement screen and placed it on my own but still the same behavior. I cant go to AT&T as it got an unlocked phone and have voided the warranty since I opened it to replace the screen.
Any help or guidance from experts of this forums would be really appreciated.

You probably tried this already, but just incase....but did you try to turn up the backlight setting (Settings->System->Backlight) and see if that made any difference?

I tried it already but it dint help. Also the display setting take effect only once yo phone has crossed the startup screen. Dont know why I am not getting any display even on the very first startup screen.

Me and another guy are going through the same thing. So far, no answer has been found to our problem. I also bought this phone thinking all it needed was a new screen, come to find out after I replaced it that it was doing the same thing. It seems like this problem only effects a very small percentage of Kaiser users.
I have an AT&T tilt and I just upgraded it to the WM6.1 ROM from the HTC webpage and since then I have noticed that when I turn of the screen, all of a sudden it just lights up for a sec and turns off again, without any reason, is there a way to fix this, do i have to flash it again? what do I have to do?
i have the same issue, seems like after i flashed it happened.. any ideas?
one cool feature is that when it flickers, if u press the screen constantly, it flickers.. like a strobe light.. lol
I have the same problem. It's annoying because I think I'm getting a text or call. and usually I don't receive texts, i have to see it light up then press the mail button to see if I have a new text. ARGH.
My Tilt does the same thing. It's a whiteish-gay light. It'll come on for short bursts or I'll notice it on in the middle of the night, and who knows how long it's on until I notice it.
I had upgraded to WM6.1 a while back, and didn't have any issues, but had to hard reset my Tilt and it has been doing it since.
It doesn't do it all the time, either. Weird.

I seem to remember there being an issue with screen flicker when the Tilt first came out, I think it was related to having Telnav selected in the today screen items tab. Try removing the checks one item at a time from the items tab, I doubt it will be as simple as a software conflict but it could be worth trying.
I had an issue with SPB Pocket Plus on my today screen, once I moved it in to a tab on SPB Shell the issue disappeared.

I dont know if it just stopped doing it, I am not paying attention anymore or if one of the many things I did finally worked, but the truth is i havent seen it do it again, Thanks to everybody
It been happening on my Tilt since I got it last month.
This is happening on my tilt too... only after upgrading to 6.1. Glad to see it is not just me, but very concerning that this is a problem directly in the 6.1 TILT rom.

Adding my voice and another symptom
is anyone else having this problem:
1. lock the tilt by tapping 'device unlocked'
2. tap the power button.
3. the backlight comes on, no picture but instead of flashing it stays on draining the battery
4. tap the power button to turn the tilt back on
5. tap the power button to turn tilt back off again
6. tilt stays off.
the issue did not change with the backlight hotfix.
Maybe try another ROM
Finally, i found others with this stupid glitch
I thought it was a hardware error, so i had AT&T send me a warranty/replacement, and guess what... comes out of the box and STILL DOES IT! Has anyone with this problem tried installing a DIFFERENT ROM, like one from the XDA forums? I'm about to try that, because i am fed up with this. I will report if it works. ARG!
Sorry for the ranting. but in a way, i'm relieved. that there are others with this problem

I am glad that I have found other people with the same issue as me. I thought it was just my phone, as I do a lot of backups and restores after I do something stupid with my phone and I also use a lot of beta/unstable software, and figured it was caused by these. However, it only happened after I upgraded to 6.1 stock ROM. Maybe somebody can figure out exactly why this happens, and then we can come up with a fix. I am just happy that I'm no longer alone with this issue

I'm very pleased to know that it isn't just me experiencing this stupid backlight issue.
It started happening the second I upgraded to WM6.1
Funny thing is, it only happens to me if I Lock the phone (keys) and turn off the screen. If I just turn off the screen without locking, the backlight stays off.
It would be really great if someone could come up with a fix for this that doesnt require me to reflash my phone with some cooked up rom

Running the AT&T 6.1 ROM and silly thing turns on by itself at 12 midnight. No connection to anything as I leave it in Flight Mode. Only goes off after I hit the Power Button. Drains the battery down to about half by the time I leave for work at 7AM.
Really is annoying!
Possible Solution
If you are still under warranty, call up AT&T warranty replacement (Customer service is 1-800-331-0500, and just ask for warranty department), and tell them you have this problem. TELL THEM YOU THINK IT IS A HARDWARE ISSUE, and they will send you a replacement, refurbished Tilt. The next one will also have WM6.1 on it, and do the same thing. HOWEVER, it is AT&T policy that after two replacements, instead of getting another one the third time, they give you a refurb of a DIFFERENT MODEL. That is how i got the AT&T FUZE (a.k.a. the HTC Touch Pro, a.k.a the "Raphael"). It doesn't have that problem. But otherwise, i have no other suggestions. i'm just sick of having AT&T screw up the phone's software, and then try to pass it off as quality.
Mine comes on exactly at midnight!
Annoying as hell...and the light from it wakes me up from across the room.

I have to power on and off my screen for the issue to go away. Some examples are when im typing and I hit and key and it chooses another one or i'm trying to scroll on the menu and even if im picking something from the top the phone highlights the menu icon at the bottom. Are this issue just with my phone? has anybody been able to fix this?, If i call HTC support and they send me and new phone will it have the same issues?
Please guys let me know... this is driving me crazy

the screen on this phone blows... plain and simple... you will just have to get used to it...

Don't get rid of the phone. You don't have to reboot, just lock the screen by pressing the power button, then unlock it. I've had it a couple of times but it goes away when I do that.
Also, be aware that it's very sensitive to any part of your hand that might be leaning over the edge of the screen, or hovering over the touch buttons. For example if my finger is hovering over the home button but not touching it, and then I touch somewhere higher up on the screen, it may respond as if I had pressed menu.

So...are you saying we are holding the phone the wrong way? Lol.
the nexus has this issue with the screen. its not a big deal, just lock the screen and unlock it, it fixes the problem. its some kind of mis calibration issue. yeah it sucks, but not the end of the world. only takes 2 seconds to fix it.

Heehee. I guess Android isn't immune to that either. Nor is the EVO or Droid Incredible (not identical problems but they're still there). I think it's inevitable that as we try and jam more and more "magic" into a single unit, things start to crosstalk in unpredictable ways and glitches emerge.
I have to say, the touch-sensitive buttons on Milestone & N1 really throw off people who haven't used them before. If I pull up a picture or video and I'm showing it to someone, inevitably they clutch the phone with a finger on a touch button, and then I have to get them back into the app and explain what not to touch. That's one reason I'd rather have physical buttons such as on the Desire.
I have this touchscreen problem as well, and yes its a big deal for me! I spent $580.00 for this phone. This shouldnt be happening at all! I've tried all sorts of troubleshooting(deleting cache partition, updating to the latest froyo, restoring factory settings, tried without installing 3rd party softwares, etc..) before i finally came to the realization that this is a hardware issue. Ive tried narrowing down to possibly when and how it occurs, but you can't. It just happens when it happens. It's impossible to predict. When this problem occurs, watch closely to where the calibration is off. During the problem, the calibration is only off on the bottom half of the screen, more so close to the bottom right. The top part will work perfectly. You can test this out by swiping left to right or vice versa on the homescreen. This problem will also affect the Pinch-to-Zoom in Browser, and the ability to type correctly using the default keyboard or 3rd party's like Swype. I received an exchange thru HTC a couple days ago, and not only was this exact touchscreen issue prevalent in this unit, but also it suffered from the purplish screen tint. This issue seems to have existed since they first launched this phone, but for some reason there has been no fix for it. It's funny that the EVO received a software fix promptly after the issue was reported by many. Why not the N1?? Because it's hardware, that's why! Feature wise, this phone is by far my best PDA, I mean I really love this phone, but $580.00 is too much for such an issue to exist. I'm hoping that there's only a number of bad batches floating around. I would say, if i receive 4 exchanges, all with the same exact issue, i may look into a class action. I definitely wouldn't want to be stuck with this problem after my year warranty is up!
I haven't had the 'crazy screen' thing since FRF85B, I assumed they'd fixed it.

not hardware problem
I encounter this problem a couple of times and I tested two things: useing trackball I ran touch sens app and tested the touch sensor, it was fine, second I killed all apps using a task man and it fixed the issue. I am on froyo.

I experienced this yesterday for the first time on FRF91 (unrooted Stock build). I couldn't press the "enter" button on stock keyboard. It just kept choosing Delete instead. Lock/unlock screen via power button sorted it.
So the problem is still there in latest build of FroYo (for me anyhow!)

I've had this problem ever since I got my N1. Sometimes made me want to switch back to my iPhone! Makes it a lot harder for my son (2 1/2) to use the phone too.
Seems reports are mixed to whether froyo fixes it or not. But it gives me hope. I've been using CM5.0.8, holding out for their final release but this gives me a reason to try MCR.
I have upgraded to FroYo FRF91 but still see the same issue.
Sometimes I face with the calibration's flaw for the left bottom corner of the touch screen.
What a shame I have paid 750$ here for this phone. I really love it but this flaw screwed up all the pleasure.

i have two n1, one has this problem occasionally, the other one never. Both run same kernel, rom and apps
A quick lock and unlock fixes the problem

i think no one really knows. Would be a strange hardware issue which can be fixed by locking and unlocking.

Problem:
My phone isn't rooted. No other ROM installed. Not flashed. Not bricked. Works perfectly, except the touch screen is dead. I have set-up a patern to unlock, which I can't unlock... so I can't use the phone.
Is there a solution to this issue?
I don't want to install another touch screen, just delete the whole phone and not set-up a patern to unlock. I tried to search for
- RSD lite since that's the only thing I can work with and it's easy
- "unbrick" my phone

well you can fix teh touch sreen (buy a new one and replace it - it's easy),
but i don't want to do that, I just want to disable the touch screen (no pattern lock). I actually want to format it, so i need to restart and i wills kip the pattern lock

Sit down and seriously think what you are asking and what your phone does.
If you wipe phone you would need to 'Touch Screen To Start' so that option is out the window.
To get rid of the lock pattern you need to enter the lock pattern first, reason being for security.
New touch screen or nothing, sorry.
I have a similar situation. i am trying to sell it cause i bought another phone but need to factory reset or delete all the info from this one. cant even get pass the unlock pattern. its a motorola cliq. please help
