I had a Garmin Nuvi portable nav that my wife broke the other day, I have searched the forums and found that I can install Garmin xt on my Kaiser, I followed all the instructions posted and managed to get it to run on my phone with the built in GPS. On the nuvi my wife broke I was able to hook it up with a usb cable and extract the maps, so my question is since i have the US maps that I extracted from my broken nuvi; is their a way to get Garmin XT to see that file, I had a few failed attempts and was wondering if its even possible or am I screwed and have to buy another nuvi.
thanks guy for any help you can give me.
If you bought the garmin xt software:
http://www.amazon.com/GARMIN-010-11...1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1210999005&sr=8-1
it should have come with an sd card with preloaded maps.
otherwise Restrected @ thepiratebay has a 1.23 gb file with a very detailed explanation on setting up garmin xt/us map on a pda. it might help you use the extracted files from your broken garmin. his instructions are too detailed at times but they work if followed. i feel bad that your garmin broke but dont use his file if you dont want to get caught!
I have found Garmin to be quite generous with their in-warranty repair policy and their out-of-warranty repair prices are reasonable versus buying a new GPS or throwing the old one away...

I have a file that I extracted from the broken unit, I was just trying to figure out If I could use that file on the phone, where can I get these instructions (restrected @ thepiratebay) maybe I can at least follow it and apply the file that I have. Also what do you mean get caught, how can you get caught.

The unit is out of warrenty and I didn't want to buy a new one, In short she destroyed the screen.
I tried Garmin XT on my tilt and found it to be very slow. I love it's interface more than TT but had to go back to TT because I would make a turn and Garmin took like 3 seconds to recognize I had turned.
With Mapsource download the maps from the nuvi to your PC and then with same programe upload the desired maps to your phone.

I had the same experience about garmin. Though the great map coverage and good UI, the ultra slow refresh rate make it almost useless and drive me crazy.
same issue with Garmin XT, love the UI but unacceptable refresh rate. I have both Garmin and TT, Garmin comes in handy i.e gas price, hotels, etc.

i am a total novice, so please be gentle!!
what do i need and what the best place to buy it all from??
Viist my site for a start! You need a mount so you can see it whilst driving, a memory card for the maps, a GPS Mouse that is XDA/XDAII compatible and some GPS Software.
thanks mate, what about the maps?
Well not knowing where you are located makes that a difficult question to answer! If you're in Europe then I'd suggest TomTom, CoPilot or Navman as a good place to start.
Also consider Mapopolis, Teletype and Intellinav.
i am in the uk!
Well my package of choice is TomTom Navigator. Great user interface, clear display etc.
i have hada look atya site and is this the 1 i should go for?
http://www.handtec.co.uk/moreinfo.asp?ProductID=207
ohh and i have a 128mb sd card already!
will i be able to just plug that kit in load the maps etc on my card and off i go, never lost or asking for dirctions
http://www.handtec.co.uk/moreinfo.asp?ProductID=207
That will do nicely and yes, install GPS, install, app and maps and away you go
I use the NAVMAN 4410 blue tooth, with 4 disk european maps, fairly easy to install, I have only ever go lost once and that was when I ignored the sat nav instruction while drive round anterwp ring road, it then took other 45 mins using the sat nav to get back on the right road.
I use 128mb card and just upload the different maps when I need them.
All the map sofware have issues with regards to the latest roads missing and telling you to turn right across the M1.
lmao @ "telling you to turn right across the M1" did you try?!?!
griffog!! will this kit work on the sonyericsson P900 or could you suggest one that will as my colleage has my old one?

Hello,
anyone who has Tomtom working on the Kaiser?
The application runs, but recognizes no maps, allthough the Western Europe Map is present...
Greetz,
Forrest
Netvigator
Yes, I have got Tomtom 6 running on Kaiser and using the latest 6.75 maps and it works perfect.
Great! Can you tell me how you did it?
Maybe I should rename the directory of the Western Europe map on my SD, but I don't know how it should be named...
Thanks!
It works! I renamed the map a few times, and suddenly it was recognized!
Thanks anyway!
How is the GPS in acquiring a GPS fix?
Is it quick?
Thanks,
HJ
If you check the box carefuly, you'll find disk with tomtom app. The version there is newer thet anything you can get elsewhere, but only works with kaiser...
Tomtom Navigator 6.032!!!

You can't download it. It is included on the CD. Aside from that, TT 6.032 does not work on other devices, it will simply refuse to install.
As far as the fix is concerned, as I already mentioned in another thread, it's really a lot quicker than on the Trinity (Qcomm) or x7500 (Sirf III) and also a lot more sensitive (7 bars on the dinner table compared to 0 for the x7500)
Got my kaiser yesterday, used the tomtom this morning on the way to work , the lock on time was about the same as my sirfiii external unit around 90ecs, was only get around 3-4 sats though so weaker than the external unit. I was not using quick gps fix either.
I will see how it goes as i can always use the external unit with it anyway. handy to have it all built in though.
device seems very responsive compared to my vario II.
time will tell.
Actually, you should be able to manually replace the .exe of 6.032 over a 6.030 install...

where on the cd is the tomtom cab? I looked at each folder on both cd's that came with the kaiser and nothing. Any chance someone can send me the file? I will proof I do own tomtom maps and a kaiser, please pm.
It is called "Installer_Kaiser_ttn_6_032_8351_HTC_WWE_20070716.exe" on my cdrom, yours should be the same. The cdrom also has the tomtom logo on it as well.
I have had mine freeze twice now whilst using it, i think it may have something to do with the traffic subscription as i have just had that transferred over to my new kaiser, before it was fine with tomtom. Will continue testing to see how frequent this becomes....
It appears that there are two versions of the applications disk. Can HTC's TomTom app be downloaded from their site?

boy, if some kind sould could put this up someplace...
well i guess seeing as it cannot be installed on any other device apart from the Kaiser I dont see any reason not to post it up as no one apart from Kaisers owners can install it anyway.
Obviously if this causes an issue i will remove it immediately....
HERE
Thx Zomig. Much appreciated!
Thanks! Just need to wait for the 8925 release now and see if there's anything else we're missing.
-Mc
Hmmm....McHale- I doubt that AT&T will be releasing Tomtom with their units...
I'm sure they're not. I actually meant if they cripple the device in any way like removing the front camera. I still haven't seen an official release that says it has GPS.
-Mc
Well, I am all prepared to buy the Kaiser when it hits the market. I am already looking at the GPS software packages out there for my Kaiser (hopefully GPS is not locked to Telenav). Even if it is locked, I am pretty sure all the good cooks out here will modify the ROM to fix this. What are you all thinking about using?
I've been using Route 66 on my Wizard and it works quite well. DeLorme Pocket Street Atlas is OK but the maps and routing aren't as good.
Lots of people swear by TomTom, and a few reviewers/testers have used it on their pre-production Kaisers. Both semsons.com & buygpsnow.com have a wide selection of GPS software packages.
I use tomtom and find it great.
i think ill also use tomtom. which one is the best?
ive never owned a gps device, so that's the only software ive really heard of..
I've been using OCN6 with my Wizard. . . anxious to see if it works with the Kaiser/8925/Tilt.
Route66 for me. I want my traffic information without having to pay a subscription...
Only thing that could be improved is the frequency of the map updates, where TomTom is the clear winner, but I've had no problems with my R66 map accuracy so far.
regarding the GPS:
Does anyone of you know wether there is GPS Software that could pull images from google maps?
Like a "show me satellite image of my current location" - button?
I think that would be really cool, but does it already exist?
And secondly, I'm looking for a GPS - Software that runs in the background and logs the GPS coordinates in order to geotag photos from my digicam later. Any recommendations here?
Try Mapopolis...
I use Mapopolis and it works and looks great on my ETEN X500+ VGA device. I'll use it when I get the Kaiser too. The resolution will go down but I still love the program.
Mapopolis has a GPS TRAIL option that logs your trip at preset intervals (every 5 minutes, 5 miles or whatever). All you have to do then is use the Location SMS feature of WM6 with pictures attached at capture the places you want. From there, you can create a nice Trip Photo Album with coordinates or send the trip via email.
TEC
I can't really compare software as I have only used Tomtom, but I have always found the program great and have never felt tempted to even try another software package because it has always worked so well.
With my 8525 I purchased the Garmin Mobile 10 which is this awesome little gps receiver that fits in your palm. It's bluetooth and all I do is put the tiny thing in my pocket. It uses Garmin software and works amazingly well. I'm wondering whether this would be MORE accurate than the built in GPS receiver in the Kaiser. If this is more accurate then I'll keep on using it but if the 8925 works just as well then I'll probably sell the garmin.

Wow great find. The downside to this software though is it requires an internet connection to connect to google when planning routes. So, if you don't have coverage then youre going to get lost.
MDA Vario III
The Vario III will be coming with CoPilot out of the box (there are having alot of problems in the testing of this cant cant make it work) they are also having problems gettin the WiFi stay on. So all you UK users who are after the Vario III (me included) will be waiting till the start of Oct

Says here its coming with tom tom taster version
http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/wi...tytn-ii-europe-ultimate-mobile-companion.html
I'll be using iGuidance, as it's what I'm using now on my Hermes...
I'll be using TomTom Nav 6. It also has a satelite download but I've never used it.
I just got my TyTN II and installed iguidance 3.0.1.
It doesn't actually start most of the time. It appears to run once after a reboot but then not again.
I can see the exe in the process list but the app is not actually running. or never finishes starting.
So maybe i will give tom tom a try. LOL
Edit: Oh actually i ran it and waited 10 minutes and the program actually launched.. so there are definitely a few issues.

Actually, I'd love if someone with a Kaiser would try Mapopolis - just load the Los Angeles, USA map and see if it's usable. My Hermes dogs out completely at high zoom levels - I'm presuming due to only 64MB of memory vs the 128MB in my old iPAQ 5555. (By "dogs out" I mean drag-panning the map is extremely jerky and category searches take near to a minute!)
Mapopolis' POI management is second to none, and it's had text-to-speech for ages. TomTom v6.030 is the latest PocketPC version I've found and it still has no text-to-speech, won't allow you to add your own POIs to the canned categories, etc.

Hey, I just upgraded to the official sprint rom and hate their satellite nav program, but anyway, I wanted to know if anyone has any recommended software for use with the phone, my friend recommends Garmin XT but I can't find for sure if it even works with the Mogul. Thanks in advance.

Garmin XT works perfectly with the mogul. i have it on mines, you dont even need to use the GPS Launcher. it detects it automatically. i also have tomtom 6 navigator on mines as well. it works well too, but you have to use a gps launcher with that one.
A GPS launcher? Forgive the newbishness, but whassat?

Some GPS programs dont detect the mogul's internal Gps, so the Gps launcher, activates gps as well as the program at the same time.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=17072
this is where i read up on it. However the Garmin XT Mobile doesnt require the launcher in order to use the mogul internal gps.

Could you comment on whether or not Garmin XT has text-to-speech for street names? During my limited experience with TomTom (on a friend's phone), I noticed that TomTom didn't have this feature (or it wasn't turned on by default). Does Garmin XT announce street names?
Thanks.
NO, it does not have this feature or none that I can see. But it does work great, I think I like tom tom for some of the other features like advanced routing and I think the maps tom tom are more accurate. For example I get a lock at my house and it says that I am at 1057 and should be 1017.
But for the most part is works great.
Here is another vote for Garmin XT...
It does not read out the street names but I have found that I don't really need stephen hawkings telling me what the name of the street is as long as it is telling me when to make the turn! LOL
The Garmin also does a better job on streets with two names which is common in rural areas...
I live on a street that is a county road AND a state highway...
In Tom Tom I had to use the county road to enter in addresses but with Garmin it would take either street name and still find it.
There are a few nav proggies that do read names out to you but I don't think any of them have the other features and huge POI database of Garmin or Tom Tom.
I have both of those installed (8GB SD Card) and I have to say I never use the Tom Tom just the Garmin!
Quick question

Hi,
Please bare with me as I am very new to this.

You really don't need either to use GPS unless you are going to use google maps or ms live. Then you would need internet connection.
Garmin, IGO, Tom Tom and others use the gps receiver in the phone that uses the sats in the sky without the need for monthly fees. So if you only wanted to use the phone and gps (no internet or sms) then you would not need a data plan or sms plan.

If you have unlimited Data package then you can use pretty much any GPS program you want. No extra charges at all! They don't charge for the use of the GPS and you only need the data connection if you use a program that downloads maps on the fly. (Google or MS). I personally don't like that because if I happen to get to an area where the data service isn't available you won't get a map until you get back into a data service area.
A program like Garmin and Tom Tom will also use data connections if you have them but that is only to download updated traffic data. Both Garmin and TT store the maps on the device. If you have a large SD card (like my 8GB) you can store the entire North America map with all the POI data which takes up about 2GB (a little less) of space. IF you don't have a lot of storage space you will have to download a partial map that covers the area your going to be driving in. May seem like a pain but it makes the operation a lot better to have the maps local and always available.
IF you have good storage space and unlimited Data, then your pretty much set. Make your choice based on the features of the program.
If you want to get a feel for each go to your local electronics store and try out the standalone TomTom and Garmin units. They pretty much run the same software (similar) to what you'll get on the PPC.
Google and MS are free so you can easily try them too if you want.
I personally love my Garmin. I bought the GPS10 and it works great. But don't buy the SD card versions...Get the CD which will allow you to install on the PC any SD card instead. Then you can install to any size SD card you want with plenty of room for other things as well!
Do you guys know of any problems with the install on a Titan 6800? garmin xt
ok i want this is it free or it cost money but if its free where can i download it
bpratt - Absolutely no issues installing GXT on a 6800 but it does require at least a 2GB+ memory card to store the maps and program. With GTX you don't actually install it onto the device it really installs into the memory card. When you put the memory card into the device it then adds the bits it needs to the device and runs. In fact you can use that card in any WM device that Accepts SD memory and it will install and work as long as that device has GPS capability.
Get the CD version of it though. More flexible installation options.
Authentisketch -No Garmin isn't free. At least not legally free. I got it with the Garmin Bluetooth GPS10 unit for $119 on Ebay.
i've been running google maps on mine. It has a tracking option (gps) and it's pretty good. Pretty scary actually. To be honest, not only did it find where i live easy enough, the address, BUT ALSO THE FREAKING APARTMENT UNIT! That last bit bothers me so much. I've never been a "ohhhh tin foil time" but that, how does it know what unit i live in???
google maps for mobile FTW
http://www.google.com/mobile/gmm/stp-js.html
I used Iguidance 3.0 w/ google maps today. It's a darn good combination
if you dont' have a lot of storage space. for my area, VA/DC/MD
program and maps only take up 79 megabytes on my 2 gb storage card.
this setup means i dont' have to store PIO i can look up the latest with google maps,
and copy the address over into iguidance.
The only thing is, when it reads directions, it pauses between words.
in..200..yards...turn... left I hope there is a mod to fix that...
the iguidance cab file is only like 13k.
Hello boys...
I have spent last 46 hours (ain't sleep last night ) to set up Garmin Mobile XT on TYTN II and I give up! I have read all of yours advices but still don't get how to put this thing to work. It just won't find gps receiver. All the time the same message.
I've downloaded all necesarry software and replaced all files as i found here but it's not working. I use SCG and Adria route maps. Right now, kaiser is searching and searching for gps receiver...and still nothing....
Does anybody have any idea how to fix this sh't?
Maps are unlocked and I can browse map but it says that I need to type some 8 character code for software....maybe that's why he won't register internal gps receiver ???
Please help me
p.s. sorry for my english i know it's not verry well, but I hope u'll understand me
Thats right, you need the code. Buy or borrow it.
Is it possible to enter a code form a keygen or something? I can't believe that a code would stop me in this ....
update:
Well I have successfully cracked Garmin Mobile XT but I have problem with maps. I want to use existing maps (which I have for a year used in Garmin Nuvi 250) on my PDA. Is it possible now to use those maps? They are already unlocked but for Garmin Nuvi...is that making some difference?
Please help
Yes, it is doable, but what you're asking is illegal. Circumventing copywrited software will get you sent to 'federal pound you in the @$$ prison'
