Sudden Device Failure ? =( - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I've search woth Google, GWENI and Wiki and could not find a similar case. Please let me know if this has already been dealt with.
So, everything was working fine earlier this morning (alarm, calls, wifi, bluetooth A2DP), I have not installed nor tweaked anything in weeks - I finally had the phone setup the way I wanted to...
This morning I was adding an event in my Calendar, and I got an "Application Error" msg - which would not allow me to add the event. I quit calendar, tried again and the same thing happned. I had just succcessfuly added a Contact a second earlier so I decided to Soft Reset (Using the button on the bottom and stylus) and when it started booting up I noticed the AT&T 3G Splash Animation Screen (which I had disabled back in February - this is were I went "Oh no ") followed by the Windows Mobile Splash screen with "Tap the screen to set up your Windows Mobile based device". So I'm guessing the phone had a Factory Reset for some reason.
Unfortunetly, my struggle doesn't end with me losing my information. The phone is stuck at that Windows Mobile Splash Screen. I removed my SIM Card (which is not ATT), and battery for a few minutes but I have only been able to pass the Spash Screen about three times and the phone gets stuck on the Screen Calibration/Alignment set up. Other than the Reset Button, none of the buttons respond at this point, including the power button.
Any suggestions?
Any help will be GREATLY appreciated =)

I understand the buttons are not responding. However, a similar situation happened to me last week. I just had to do a hard reset (the buttons only responded when i did a hard reset).
hold down both soft keys while inserting your stylus. Hopefully this works.

also try flashing a different rom and see if that solves the problem

Tilt locked up hard

Got a TILT that locks up at the Windows Mobile screen. Happened when I attempted to install XPress Mail. Not sure why. Odd thing is reminders still fire and pop up on the screen, and lights indicate WiFi is working. Anyway, I've tried the reset button removing the battery, leaving the battery out for 24 hours - nothing. Is there a way to hard reset the device back to factory values?
Fortunately this was a replacement for my original TILT that had a slightly slow clock. So I'm using the original for now.
Well that was a brilliant first post.
Found the hard reset routine - hold both soft buttons and press reset, holding the soft buttons until the restore to factory defaults appears, and then press send. Worked like a charm.

AT&T Tilt Black Screen Fix !

Software incompatibility can cause your AT&T Tilt (HTC 8925) screen to go "Black", without the ability to perform and can render the phone useless.."briking your tilt"
The following fix will return the phone to factory specs only if you were using AT&T ROM. This fix is NOT tested on Other ROMS:
1. Remove your SIM card.
2. Remove your Micro SD Card.
3. Do a Soft Reset.
4. Immediately when the black screen appears, press and hold the On/Off side button ( hold for 25-30 seconds ).
5. Wait for 1 to 2 minutes, until a message appears on its own, saying that the phone reboot is non-functioning due to installing incompatible software. It also asks you if you want to re-set the phone to original factory settings to press "send" ( They mean the button with the green phone picture on it on the bottom of the phone), or press any button to cancel the process.
6. Press the button with the picture of the green phone.
7. Wait for 2-5 minutes and the phone will re-set itself to factory specs.
8. Phone will shut down itself. Turn it on normally and start fresh.
Good luck!
I found this out the hard way. We should start a list of software that does it, heres the first that I found will black screen your tilt, do NOT use this.
Levenums taskbar battery meter

You will black screen and lose everything with it as I found out twice on my tilt. It loads at widows startup during the windows screen.
Another non compatible program!
please note that if you install "arabizer13bn277.exe" or any of its product on your Tilt YOU WILL brick the device and you will need to re-set it to factory ROM.
if u do factory rest
we will loose all the phone nos & information of contact
Im not able to sycn & save Telephone nos & notes on induvisale nos
How else can i save nos on comp
or should i get a new phone & then ask AT&T phone people to help me set it on the new phone
Please help
While this won't BLSOD (BLack Screen Of Death) your Tilt, it will definitely kill your GPS and should be avoided at all costs - Map4PDA.
If you install it and run it, it starts searching for your GPS and eventually hangs, requiring a soft reset to recover use of the phone. After a soft reset, the GPS no longer works. Too bad there isn't an option to manually specify GPS settings because it's a sweet GPS mapping program ala Google Maps that can switch between MS Live!, Google and Yahoo maps (plus one or two others I think...).
Man i hope this works!!!!
I got the black screen from flashing wm6.1 from htc e-club site. The new OS came up fine but when I restored my files with Sprite (only because PIM back up log couldn be found on memory card) the annoying Att animation starts but when the WM6.1 screen is supposed to come up screen goes black. Tilt WILL NOT hard reset with soft keys and stylus! I even attempted to re-flash 6.1 in hopes for a hard reset that way, but usb is even un-responsive! If this black screen reset you posted works, be looking for a donation from me!!!
Any other tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I am new to all of this...but I have read, and read, and searched, and read, and have learned a good bit. But now I need HELP PLEASE!

If you have a HardSPL, re-flash your Radio to a newer version. That can fix a black screen if you just upgraded your ROM. Just remember that you may need to try a few before it finally works.
Cant flash anything til I get it to reset.
As of now the phone is TOTALLY bricked! My pc doesn't even recognize it when I plug in usb. Really I'm getting two different screens. one is lit up but black, and the other is bars going down the screen Blk-white-blk-white...
I'm gonna try the steps above when I get home n pray for a miracle! I just had the screen replaed a month ago. I hate to lose her all over again! 8525n it for now!

I have the exact same issue. I am trying the steps above, but no luck so far. Any tips?
Ok it seems to be working. Any tips on restoring my data that was on the sprite backup?

This is from the manual -
To perform a hard reset using device keys
1. Press and hold the left SOFT KEY and the right SOFT KEY, and at the same time, use the stylus to press the RESET button at the bottom of your device. (It helps to have three hands to do this part).
2. Release the stylus, but continue pressing the two SOFT KEYs until you see the following message on the screen:
This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to the manufacturer default settings. Press SEND to restore manufacturer defaults, or press any other button to cancel.
3. Release the two SOFT KEYs, and then press the green phone button on your device.
Warning! Your device will be set back to factory default settings.
It worked for me! It returned me to the WM6.1 I just installed!

I had the same exact dang problem about the whole thing about getting the new rom from e-club and using sprite to backup and then upon restore of my back up, i just got a blank screen. I did this trick here and it worked perfectly. The real trick is step 4 and 5. I did what step 4 said to do except i held on for 35 sec instead of 30. and then after that i just pushed the send key (green phone button) a couple of times and then just let it sit for the 1-2 min and the magic message popped up! I followed through with the rest of the steps and voila! It works!
P.S. Dont forget to put your sim card back in.
Anyone get positive result from this method ?
I'm not.
My Kaiser have a black screen after unsuccesuful ROM update, and I can't flash him anymore.
Because PC recognize it as Flash Device, but noone from ActiveSynch driver's does not approach for this mode.
Any solution, please ?
I bricked my tilt after upgrading to 6.1 and using sprite backup to restore my data. I fixed it by putting my tilt in to bootloader mode by holding down the camera button and using the stylus for a soft reset. Once in bootloader mode the usb port on the device worked and I was able to reflash the rom. I will use the new method to restore to factory setting without having to reflash the the rom.
i am having the same problem as supereri and rednekvolfan. did you guys ever figure it out?
Reset worked
Hi everyone.
I had the same issue - backed up data using Sprite Backup, upgraded to WM 6.1 then restored data using Sprite Backup and the custom Device Update file that Sprite Backup requested. The phone reset and then would show the initial ATT and 3G screens then black.
I used the modified steps outlined by live2c2morrow -that are a modification of asfoor's original post and they worked.
Black screen appeared - held the power button for 35 - 40 seconds, pressed the Green Send button a couple of times then waited - 5 minutes later I received the message that the phone failed to boot and was given the option to reset the phone to factory defaults.
The key is to be patient - the screen will appear eventually.
Also - the first few times failed and I think I was inadvertently pressing the PPT or wheel buttons on the other side of the device.
Thanks to everyone on this thread - I thought I ruined my phone!
Sprite Backup - upgrade
I am upgrading my Sprite Backup to version 6 and will try the restore again.

Please Help!!!! Tilt Dead!!!!

Hello guys. I have been searching the forum for over an hour to figure out a way to get my Tilt back up and running to the way it was before. I had almost every updated cab thats out there on my tilt along with the TomTom 6 software which is where the prtoblem occured. Once I installed a cab file called "MN6-update" to my memory card it soft resetted itslef and now all I get is a blank screen. This file was supposed to help redirect the maps that I downloaded for tt6 so the program will be able to read it. After installing this file all my phone does now is load up the AT&T startup animation and then it blanks itself out.
I downloaded mtty 1.42 and am able to see the boot screen and it says usb when I connect it. What do I do next? Any help will be much appreciated.
Does anything on the screen show if you do a hard reset?
When I reset the device I only get the At&t welcome screen (along with the anoyying sound) then.... Death. The screen blanks out and none of the buttons respond.
Update: I just did another reset (By holding the power button for 30 seconds) and a message appeared telling me that a reset is not possible due to a program that was installed from an unrecognizable source. It said that it will automatically restore the phones factory settings and since then it has been stuck on the At&t screen for several minutes. Does this change anything?
The Factory Defaults loaded automatically
Looks like that second reset did the trick. Now all I have to do is load all those cabs again avoiding that last problematic one of course!

Weird Wizard Problem

My phone was loosely sitting in my shirt pocket when it spontaneously dialed. In mid-call, and w/o any button presses, it dialed again. After I ended both calls, it spontaneously dialed yet again!!! At that point, I reset the phone. It came up with the password screen, and after I entered the password, it had the windows menu bar at the top, an otherwise black screen, and no response to buttons or touchscreen.
I figured I'd try a reflash. I'd been running Zoki's excellent NBD V8.3, so I decided to upgrade to V9.2. The RUU program would connect, but would stop at 0% when trying to reflash.
Next I decided to try to force the bootloader. When I tried resetting w/ the camera button held, I'd get a blank screen w/ no backlight. The only way to get the phone to boot was to pull the battery. After booting, it returned to the password screen.
Next I tried resetting while holding the Comm + Voice Dial buttons. That brought up "Press Send to restore factory default", or something to that effect. I did, it reformatted memory, and booted to the Windows Mobile splash screen. A few button presses brought up the "Tap the screen to set up your Windows Mobile device" message. But the screen is totally unresponsive.
Attempts to force the bootloader gave the same result as before. I would guess the primary bootloader is corrupt. Is there a backup bootloader? If so, how can it be accessed?
Now it will no longer connect w/ ActiveSync, so I can't run the RUU. I'm at an impasse.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I'm 3 months away from the end of my contract and a new phone.
Thanks,
MR-808
UPDATE:
This morning, I tried turning it on for $#|+$ & grins, and it responded to the touchscreen. Yesterday, I must have rebooted and tried the touchscreen 6-8 times w/ no luck. Weird! Anyway, I was able to get past the touchscreen setup, connect w/ ActiveSync, run the RUU, and update to NBD 9.2.
I'm still not sure whether the problem was hardware or software. I guess the moral is, be persistent!

stuck on green windows screen..

I've had a quick look round the forums but cant find a definitive answer really...
Last night i got my diamond out, and it was turned off completely (not standby) for some reason. When i turned it back on it got stuck at the green windows screen with the rotating loading icon, which then also stopped. At that point it wouldnt do anything and just stopped with the backlight staying on.
I tried removing the battery, the sim, doing several hard resets, still no joy. Eventually i left it with the green screen on for about an hour, reset it, and eventually it came back on.
Anyone any ideas whats happened? Obviously i'm keen to safeguard this from happening next time (i've only had the phone a week).
I've currently got installed the following...
LEM's Trackme.
Memory Map Pocket Nav
Microsoft .net 3.5 (for trackme)
Naviter Seeyou
PHM registry editor
Gsen
sql server (for trackme)
Sensor lock
tomtom7
diamond hacks
Exchange...
Personally, if I'd only had my device a week, I would be straight in the shop for an exchange... that's assuming you haven't been messing with ROM upgrades, etc!
nope no roms, just apps installed..
it was bought from mobiles.co.uk , so a bit more difficult than just popping back to the shop plus my number is due to transfer to it tommorow, so i'm waiting until after that.
Basically, i was just wondering if the green screen halt is a common occurrence.
Hmm
Does it show the green screen after you hard reset it? Maybe a faulty .cab in your programs (I know it sounds stupid) is crashing at startup. Try a hard reset and installing one by one?
If I were you, I would use the hard-reset the phone and use it as is for about a month. If all goes well, I would gradually add programs one at a time. At least that would tell me if the phone itself is OK and if the problem may be due to 3rd parties apps.
ah okay thanks.. i tried pressing the red reset button under the cover but that didnt do anything (apart from restart the phone). I assume a hard reset is done some other way?
I'va also uninstalled some surplus apps, such as the sql server, trackme and naviter seeyou.
http://www.hardreset.eu/images_hu/htc_touch_diamond_hard_reset_soft_reset_5.jpg
press voldown and the center button, and soft reset at the same time. then you'll hard reset
What you are thinking is a hard reset, is really a soft reset. A hard reset completely erases everything on your phone and restores it to default. A soft reset just restarts the phone (like the restart button on the computer).
**Remember that a hard reset resets everything so back up files if you need to.
