I just installed the latest build of PointUI (www.pointui.com) on my TyTN II, and really like the slick interface and touch capability. Anyone else running this app, and if so have you run into any issues? The fact that the software will remain a free product makes it worth the "testing".
Thanks.
James
Theres a couple of threads on this already. I have installed it but my TyTN II locks up every time within 2 minutes of starting, even after a soft-reset so have given up for now.
I may give it another go when they fix all the bugs listed on their forums and add more features to make it more usable and by then hopefully my lockup issues will be solved as well.
I did use it for some days but I hate that the 'close' button is not an actual close button at all. It just minimizes the app instead of closing it. So it is very memory consuming.
But I did like the interface and the way it worked. Just wait a little longer to have them some issues solved.
plexat they have just fixed the close program issue today with this update
http://www.pointui.com/files/tests/hardwarekeys2/home.zip
Copy the exe over the old one and you now have a close button instead of a minimize one!
It also fixes the issue with hardware buttons not working.
the background color is horrid and the icons are goofy. but the app itself is pretty slick and i like the update manager.
i haven't used it that much, but the only bug i've experienced is while swiping my finger from side to side to move the applet ribbon the touch cube activates. i didn't know it could activate with a side to side motion.
anyway, for a beta product this thing is incredible. it has huge potential. after revisions, i think this will be a must-have app.
just installed it on my phone and it works for about 2 mins before freezing, once already its reduced my screen to randon red and yellow dots, so thats getting uninstalled.
shame really as the 5 mins i did get to spend playing with it i was quite impressed
or i would if it had a proper uninstaller
very nice!
Just installed this in a WM6 emulator (having no real WM6 hardware at this time) and I must say it is superb! It feels like an iPhone (heresy to say something around here, I know). I almost have to say that it is better then TouchFLO (Yet another heresy to say something around here).

This is a great update! I didn't like the idea of all my apps running in the background. Thanks for pointing this out.
yay! it lets me get to the hardware buttons!

No problem. I dont really know how I found it I have a tendancy to go to forums and open all threads that interest me by holding ctrl down and clicking on them. Then I read through and close them as I go.
I just happened to come across the update in one of the threads I was reading! One of the developers had posted a link to the file in the middle of a thread.

The cube activating is due to your touchflo config file. All you need to do is edit the config file to exclude pointui and the cube will not activate while pointui is open.

PointUI - some notes
Great app, but the problem is it cannot start my 3G connection when e.g. updating weather, or using update manager.
DAMN!
When I start the connection manually from normal WM6 interface, it works then, but it's annoying...
Any help with this?
Thanks,
Gabriel
You know, the saddest part about it all is that even with our $700+ dollar devices (unless you're like me and sold your soul to AT&T... $150 Kaiser baby!) we're all dying for a UI like this. Tell you what, if it wasn't for you guys and the xda-developers community, there's no way in hell I would have gotten this phone. Dutty's ROMs are magical stuff, man. Tell you what, after a few more weeks/months of dev. and a full version with a less... erm... blue background, I'd pay $50 for this program if it allows me to get through my day without ever seeing any part of the traditional Windows Mobile UI. I'd pick it up for $100 if they included integrated task manager, file explorer, media player, web browser, and other essential software. Hell, I'd gladly go higher if they allowed me to never have to see any part of Windows Mobile GUI again. The Kaiser kills the iPhone in functionality (that's why we're all here, right?), but man pointUI is a step in the right direction towards closing the "sexiness" gap.
Okay, rant over.
I'm note sure I would pay $100 for the UI, but I do agree that this is exactly what Windows Mobile needs. Overall function is great and with just a few minor fixes/changes this would be the killer app for any WM device.

I cannot agree more than what you say. HTC is a superb tool designed by engineers with some "help" from designer people. I love it, but my god the interface is sometimes not sexy at all (just compare the icons of pointui as an exemple
Iphone is a superb tool made by designers. I love it from a purely design point of view, but it lacks a lot of things engineers love (openness, 3G+, GPS, etc.)
Now the TYTNII plus a pointUI type interface would be the top must. The very few minutes I spent with pointUI, I loved it. I will keep it as soon as it really work and have more customization.
Now, I am sticked to HTC, because it is quite easier to adapt a new interface to an existing device, than the contrary
Thx

I had the same.. fairly easy to fix:
get yourself a registry editor (PHM for example)
navigate to: \HKCU\software\microsoft\today\keys\112
change: Default string to 'phone' (from Home)
change: Open string to '\windows\cprog.exe'
then i'd do a soft reset.
should work..

No I don't think it would be easy...
that's why I ask it the pro's!!!
nice idea. Bluetooth connection to the PC?
lol... just the idea of pairing a device on Bluetooth with Windows...
Can't imagine the phone side to be too hard - my first shot would probably be WLAN since that's the easiest way to get some connection working. Once you have that simply passing gsen / dpad / buttons (maybe even touchscreen input?) to the PC should be rather trivial.
The harder part is probably to write a gamepad driver for windows that interprets that input data and transforms it to DirectInput compliant information.
While I certainly know how to do the phone side - I am somewhat unsure about the PC side. The last time I did some driver coding is AGES away. I don't even know if opening a TCP/IP socket from inside a driver is possible/a good idea. Maybe one would need a daemon-like user space program to read the input from the network and feed it to the driver...
Would acualy ge a freaking awsome Ide toward an playstation 3.
And acualy a computer.

Geez I wish I had time to look into that - if their stuff was open source I am sure we could leverage about 90% of their XP driver implementation (which most likely they managed pretty well)...
do we need to remake drivers?
you can get Python (program used) for PocketPC, and it just bluetooth on to PC with NiiMe software....
testing now...
while they seem to use python on a S60 phone - this doesn't directly translate to doing the same thing on a WiMo diamond... The fact that they released their source under the GPL makes reusing their PC software a viable option though.
Speaking of GPL source - has anyone found their code available for download on their site?
Okay guys - you got me as far as installing a devel enviroment and writing a simple gsen SDK based test app now - if there's someone willing to spend some time on the PC DirectInput driver side I'm sure we can get somewhere with this...
This.Would.Be.Awesome. !!!!!!!
if this works, I gonna get a diamond other than orbit 2

Hey
I'm currently working on a little client-server (TCP/IP) thingie to at least get GSensor data from the Diamond to the PC - once that is done there's still the very ugly part of writing a DirectInput driver that acts like a gamepad...
If anyone wants to take over the driver-writing part things would progress much more quickly I guess
Sadly I don't have too much spare time at the moment to spend on the matter though.
Cheers,
Alex
a gsensor keyboard emulator could control for example
FLUX the game. (3d tube flying), by senden keystrokes
to windows` keyboardhandler
whoever does figure this out will be the man. when it does happen i just hope it will do the job for the cdma version coming to telus on or around august 6th
I have a .NET client/server pair running in an WiMo6 emulator now sending what could actually be GSen data at a fairly decent rate. Not considering the GSensor it's pretty much phone independent.
And if anyone tells me how to get rid of the files VS2k5 places on my Diamond for debugging the application I'll try the same thing with a real GSensor I am just tired of hard-resetting my Diamond in order to clean up the mess done by the development environment...
Cheers,
Alex
Edit: Okay, I tested it on my diamond by simply copying over the two required files (no debugging possible though) and transferring GSen data either via ActiveSync (say Bluetooth) or WLAN works nicely. But I'm afraid it's necessary to keep the device awake to avoid lags (does the diamond reduce CPU speed on standby?).
Will only specific apps run on android? Its just my mate wants to get Freecaddie on his Hero, and I have it on my Touch HD. I have checked on the website but not sure whether to try and put the winmo cab on and run that or will it mess the phone up... any help greatly appreciated..
I'm not a programmer so I could be completely wrong, but I don't think that will work. That's like trying to run a Windows program on a Linux machine - unless the developers specifically made a Linux version it just won't work. Probably the best thing for your friend to do is look around on the market for that application or a similar one.
(And before a Linux defender comes to correct me - yes, I know you can get windows emulators that run in Linux, but I'm not aware of those existing for phones.)
Ia m may get flamed here, but i am sure , a windows moblie app will not run on a linux based os, unless some one has made W.I.N.E (linux geeks like myself will understand) for andriod then No sorry !!

If what you don't like with the HTC calendar is that it displays all events on the monthly view in exactly the same way, you can try the Pure Calendar widgets (dev's website here). The 'Grid' one displays a coloured bar at the top of each day in a monthly view, its length representing how long the appointment is and the colour which calendar it's part of. It loads data from Outlook and Google calendars without trouble. The dev also makes an agenda style widget, but I haven't used it. Unfortunately you have to pay about £1 for either.
Hi,
Thanks I'm already using Pure Calendar and have the Grid too. I agree it's the best available at the mo but having just moved over from WinMo I'm waiting for someone to release a major app like Pocket Informant. Unfortunately developers seem wary as they are not sure people will be willing to pay £20 for an Android app (although I would be if it's good enough!)

Cheers for the responses guys.. at least I know what to expect when i get my own hero... I keep looking but still not ready to make the jump, guess I am far to comfortable with the Winmo UI. But the gap is closing on the usability.. as long as i can import everything from outlook, and find a free golf program then i might make the jump sooner..
Theme: To me, a theme just consists of button overlays to match the visual appearance of an OS environment.
Environment: To me, an environment consists of a working realtime customizable desktop, with custom scripts executed on button taps/ holds etc to simulate the useability of a OS environment.
EDIT: Sorry, so theme is the wrong word. I mean't environment in the subject title.
Well, I have searched the entire internet, but can't believe there is nothing that is worth using. Wisbar is lacking in vital functions needed to simulate a working Windows XP environment such as moveable windows which resize and minimize, draggable icons on the desktop, the list goes on. Projects are either no longer available, been suspended or even when they are available they are incompatible. I have tried various vista environments, and while they are somewhat visually similar to the real OS, they just aren't functional enough to use in everyday use. So, would anyone else agree that this is it as far as XP and vista environments go? If not, please reply and post some quality links to show what I haven't searched hard enough for and I'll kiss your boots .
dont you think that draggable resizable windows are a bit redundant on a windows mobile screen?
how many windows can you fit in such a small screen and actually work on them?
if you need that, i think that it is best that you look for a tablet with win7 in the near future
Because mobiles aren't desktops. You use alternative ways to navigate. You no longer focus on displaying as much info as possible, but instead focus on displaying it clearly and nicely.
well, I don't have a 24" screen on my phone, so what you are suggesting would be so tiny on your telephone it is rather impossible to work with neither will it be fingerfriendly for all day use. I already found the wisbar themes to tiny to use smoothly.
Of course a complete simulation will look nice, but for daily use it will be the most annoying thing to work with I guess.
Cheers,
Arnold
Hey thanks for replies. Yea, I guess you're right. It would be a pain to navigate etc. Suppose I'm a windows desktop fanatic who loves customisation too much . I don't know I just don't find windows mobile very customizable. I can't believe how hack-free the WM ROM is. I imagined being able to hack all the system files with resource hacker and change loads of things, but, none of that seems to work and the files are very well embedded into the system and are nothing but read-only.
What I'll try for now is playing around with Wisbar Advance and see if I can make it look similar to my winXP.
Cheers.

From my gatherings, you'll have to be either very lucky or you'll just have to wait until something useable is developed. I'm working on a skin, but it'll only be for the TG01 and I can't program so it won't be amazing. It'll just really be a visual representation of my windows desktop, but I'm not using WAD because as soon as you lauch a WM dedicated program, you leave the windows environment. The only way this will ever work I think is for people to sort of embed the programs within a windows xp window within WAD, but from I have seen, WAD is unable to do this.
By the way, don't you think it's funny how Microsoft have put the start menu at the top of the screen? Seems like it's a way to make it impossible to have a start menu at the bottom of the screen.
I'll use wisbar advance 2 and see what i can come up with and if it's any good, I'll post it up.
P.S. Every single vista theme I have downloaded has not been compaible for my TG01 .

I am totally put off. It only takes for the phone to hang as it's installing or something and that's it, there's no way of getting back onto the homescreen again. Have thought about it, not worth it to be honest, I'll wait for an official release (if ever ones becomes available). As it is, ROM Extractor has buggered up my device it seems . Was using it last night to extract some EXEs and this morning, the start button was totally inoperable. That's literally all I did . Haven't modified the original ROM files in any way; like anyone could anyway,. they're completely hack-proof.

Thanks very much for the link, but unfortunately, I created this thread after trying this out lol. No offense to the guy who created it, it looks nice visually and clearly resembles the windows 7 theme, but it just doesn't have any functionality. Once you load up a program, as always, you're out of the desktop environment and the taskbar at the top becomes visible again. I think, someone really needs to fix this issue and then the problem will be solved (well almost). As for moveable windows and such, I agree it would make navigation quite awkward on the small screen, I guess that's the beauty of windows mobile, but I just wish there was more software available like in the desktop versions.
I have (tried to) played around a bit with Remixos player on a Galaxy TabPro S and the conclusion is that I have never met a piece of software that was so inmature, useless and annoying. It is just a complete waste of time.
Once you get it started (despite the humorous messages it's not funny) there is no way for me as a german user to control the OS. Touchscreen input for tablets are is messed up by bad programming, no proper screenresolutions available, no fullscreen. Touchscreen input for an Android OS is messed up. I mean just think about that. That alone says it all.
You would think that at least the keyboard support would work. Not at all. I don't know what kind of keyboard it is that is running under the german label, but it is not german. They don't even get the label right: It is named "german qwerty", but it should go "german qwertz"
So entering an email address: not possible. There is no @ on the so called "german" keyboard.
But the ads are working all over the place. Here you see the priorities.
This is not serious software. It's bloatware. It's nothing but waste.
Switch to live usb. It's generally ok.
It's clear the player isn't their prior project nor goal within android machine's market, and it's normal, there are others things to do. I even think it was totally optional for them to do one.
Whatever, even if not their top priority, the updates are regular and the soft will improve. It's principal defaults are material (+ language) compatibilities, and maybe requirements too. Hardware compatibility is something that is totally rectifiable and there is good hope it will follow. This excluded, Remix is among the best actual solutions and will probably keep on doing so.
But as always there are some impatient people to express in unpleasant ways and judge things in a direct or even extreme manner, even for something that is almost (or always, I don't remember, it was one month ago) a beta. So please no need to go in a ruckus or for trash talking here like it's done almost everywhere on the web. Especially with gaming, which scene is total drama nowadays, and which scene touch this soft as well because of it's potential with games ....
A word to the wises ...
you are right, trash talking is not needed. I think it is appropiate in some cases though. Developers are doing this for a reason, there is the intention to make money here. Somehow. They put something out that is not working at all, but wasting my time. That's not all right.
You say it is almost a beta. Well almost, yes, it is alpha or even pre. If they declare it as such, you don't hear a word from me.
This method here, the way they chose to go, is not ok. There is potential yes, it might be fine for some now, for others in a year or so, good. Until then mark it as work in progress and invite beta testers, but don't pretend you have an actual product.

Does not even recognize the Wifi on the Samsung Galaxy Tabpro S
Yeah yeah. Understood ... You are in your right because of commercial and ****s eh ?
To this point even if they of course plan to make money in the end, the soft is FREE, and like said, their commercial stretch goal is their MACHINES so making the OS work well first on em. To be more precise than before, the player here is what we call a loss leader, or event to be considered it a demonstration product, but a good one even with its defaults. Did you pay something for using it or is it free ? Do you make them live another way ? Do you have annoying frequents adds and downloads of unwanted apps like on some competitors ? Nope, they do differently.
Talk trashing isn't something to do, there is plenty of ways to express dissatisfaction or anger isn't it ? Or what are you ? Non human ? A goat ? Nope, it's not appropriate, you have no right, you are taking it. No right especially if you are maybe a player who is angry just because you can't have your decent easy drug game fix.
Respect AND disrespect aren't thing that are owned. They are something that is GAINED. And at the moment even if you may consider there is nothing allowing to give them your respect, there is neither anything to allow you being disrespectful. You are just drowning yourself in your own bull**** coming back and trying to justify yourselves.
As said, gaming scene became trash behavior all the way from down to top the moment it became easy access and global. People now think all is due to them.
I have nothing to do with gaming.
Yes I have paid with my time, wasted because of illusions.
Yes there are annoying frequent ads.
I don't share your opinion about respect and disrespect, in fact I think your are drowning yourself in your own bull**** coming back and trying to justify yourselves.
yea it is not needed here there are numerous of other emulator, bluestack or Andy...
Hey Novalis,
Apologies for the late reply as we've been swamped by our Kickstarter campaign. Also, really sorry to hear of your disappointment with Remix OS Player. I'd like to address the issues I can, and ask you to help us with a couple of the other ones:
1) Unfunny humorous messages - Noted, and I'll share this with the guy who thought it was clever.
2) The only place to tweak resolution is during startup where you click on the "Advanced" button.
3) The latest Remix OS Player has full screen mode.
4) We did not work on touchscreen support since Player was targeted at Intel based PCs whose majority do not have touchscreens.
5) The keyboard support - We did make changes to the way Android Studio laid out keyboards in order to support Keyboard shortcuts (ie. Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V). May I work with you to improve this? Also, if there are any keyboard names (as you mentioned "German QWERTZ" we do apologize) we've misnamed, thanks in advance for letting us know.
6) We do have ads in the program. We are a small startup still and we do need to find a way to keep the lights on for free software products like Remix OS Player and Remix OS for PC. This is the priority in play here.
Again, I do apologize for any time you've wasted on Remix OS Player. We do have a new update that also supports OTA now.
Perhaps you can work with me to at least get the keyboard localization issue communicated in detail to our dev team.
Thanks!

Perhaps you can work with me to at least get the keyboard localization issue communicated in detail to our dev team.
Thanks!

1) look, I don't really care, it's just diffcult to find it funny if you are disappointed with the experience. In fact they would be funny if everything else was running smoothly.
2) add the native resolution of the host (you have to pre check that), and then
3) yes support fullscreen, and make sure that the resolution is properly scaled down on high res monitors (e.g. 4K).
4) In my opinion a big mistake. Android is a touch based OS and there a lot of touchscreens out there, more and more coming, and for them Remix is just unusable without touch input. I mean, think,: unusable. And it would be relatively easy to correct the mapping and disband the mouse pointer, ar least in fullscreen mode. Yes the majority out there has no touchscreen, but the majority of those who have want Android.
5) This is easy. Check out google for the german or any other language keyboard layout. Then make sure that your built in keyboards reflect that once you hit the keys. Then do your changes and check whether they interfere with what is expected from this keyboard layout.
Although it is a nice idea to transfer Windows functionallity to RemixOS it should not interfere with Android functionality. Android goes first, that's why people want to have it. Then you can add quality of life Windows features. If they work...
6) I don't mind ads. Unless they are not the only thing working... (for me)
I am sorry but because of the non working I had to uninstall Remix. And I would only reinstall it if I read that touchscreen support works. I would like to help, but without being able to do navigate, it just doesn't make sense.

Your points are taken and I've just shared them with the dev team in charge. I realize that with Remix OS for PC and Remix OS Player, we're never going to be able to satisfy all hardware/usage scenarios. We do need to choose our battles wisely based on the resources we have.
However, also as a startup, each user is vital for us. While still needing to adhere to the 80/20 rule due to our limited resources, I'll do the best I can to push our devs to work on 1) keyboard config support, and 2) touchscreen Intel devices.
Thanks again for your feedback and time.

Hi.
Just to know.
I read about adds in Remix Os (player, in my case), here, and else. But well I can't see any or I'm totally blind. The only "adds" I saw were at first startup, giving the possibility to download some apps, and I can't really consider this like pub.
I'm not complaining about not having adds, sure ^^ but where are they ? Normal ? Not even automatic propositions or even downloads like with Andy. If you needs publicity to live on, better it to be working
Putting out a free software download does have it's pros and cons. On one hand, it's much easier to build up a user base, to get higher volumes of feedback and to build off of that feedback. However, to maintain the team that works on said software is a challenge. We did place ads in the apps drawer and have aimed to be unobtrusive with the ads as well as tailoring them to be relevant to the user. However, we did receive some backlash from users who may not understand the need for ads on free software. Thus, we have continued to dial back the way the ads are shown so that our users don't feel annoyed with them. That's probably why you don't see it as very intrusive anymore. Thanks again for your comments and interest!

Yes, know that.
And I finally saw the tab after posting and looking again ... Recommendations. But yeah, it's faaaaar than invasive. Or even absolutely invisible and can be ignored. Can't consider that personally as publicity. For me and add is a commercial, it's bling bling or even noisy, so much you can't miss it, or are forced to it.
Ads play a big role in android,so no surprise here.
