Why does Bluetooth kill my battery?? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hi I would appreciate your views on an issue I am having with my Vodafone V1615 badged Kaiser.
I use bluetooth a lot, when I am in the car and out and about via bluetooth headsets or carkits. I am used to just leaving it switched on all the time, on other phones, with very little impact to battery life. But since I started using my V1615 as my only device I have noticed how it affects the battery life. I decided to do some simple scientific tests!
With bluetooth switched on and used all day my battery was warning me of imminent data loss by 5pm. Thats a poor 8 hours from a full overnight charge. This is only using the device for voice calls, no gps or web surfing. I do however have BlackBerry connect though.
This is really disappointing! My previous device was a Blackberry 8800, and I could quite happily use all of the functions (including GPS) leave bluetooth on all the time and make frequent voice calls and get at LEAST two days of use from a single charge.
Are my experiences unusual is my device faulty do you think?
I would love to hear some views!

Have you actually used the phone all day with the same usage pattern with bluetooth off?
HSDPA with moderate data usage is about 16 hours of battery life. If you change it to EDGE, it more than doubles. This is from my experience, heavier data usage might make the numbers even worse.
I doubt it's actually bluetooth that's the problem.

It just does. It's like turning on lights in your house and asking why is my bill higher

I have the same problem with my tilt!! Mine drops from a FULL charge to 47% or lower in about 7 hrs and VERY little to NO usage!!.. No WIFI or GPS usage either!!
I thought it was a bad battery, so I bought a new one from AT&T but it's got the same results!!
I have no clue why this could be happening!!

I was having the same problem - my Tilt was at 30 percent at the end of my day - heaven help me if I forgot to charge it every single night.
I updated my phone to the ROM that you see in my signature and have 70-75 percent battery left now at the end of the day.
(9PM here CST now and I have 72 percent battery left after using the phone all day with bluetooth on all day.)
So - not sure what ROM you are on - but OBVIOUSLY the radio and ROM have a LOT to do with battery usage - I recommend that if you are capable you experiment with other ROMS.

Bill, that's really impressive!! I think I may just give the same ROM and Radio as yours a shot!
I Just did the HardSPL and am now ready to flash.. gotta look for that ROM now!
Thanks!

okay, I just flashed the Rom and Radio from the OEM AT&T Tilt WM6 to what I have in the signature and the difference in battery life has changed like day and night!!
Now, with good usage [ ~ 2 hrs talk with BT ON and some wifi ] I end up with about 65-70% charge LEFT around 11 pm [ start of day with FULL charge is usually around 9 - 9 30 am ]
I am EXTREMELY impressed and happy to have done this flash!!!

Battery Life any good

Hi,
I'm thinking of changing from the M3100 to the Kaiser.
Is the battery life any better as my phone with push email goes flat so quick.
Cheers.
What do you consider "quick"?
My TyTN II is running 24/7 with a constant 3G-connection, 5 minute interval for POP3-mail and Exchange-pushmail. I also call about 45 minutes/day and send out a few SMS.
Based on my experiences so far, my battery should last about 2 days before going to backup-battery. And I think that's decent enough for the usage I demand from this device (it also helps to have 4 chargers laying around in various places).
Getting ~ 18 hours with ActiveSync email push "As items arrive", 3G / HSDPA, around ~ 3 - 5MB data download per day, ~ 30 mins calls, light GPS usage. Not pretty but given the large featureset and speed of the device (e.g. data download) one has to make compromises. A larger battery design would have been nice but a charger at home and in the office and a spare battery when at neither one do the trick as well.

In my case - rather light usage - it's roughly the same as with my previous Hermes, which means ~2 days when Auto (2/3G) mode, and ~3 days when on 2G-only mode.
Not so good on mine
I am very unhappy with mine, particularly compared with my Trinity (same usage pattern, but I get probably twice less battery).
- Listening to music on the speaker for 15-20 mins drops the battery from 100% to less than 90% (after a full night charge).
- Using GPS for 60 mins drops the battery by a 20-30%. These are not scientific measurements, but I am almost reluctant to use the device because of this.
It would seem, compared to other people’s comments, that my battery or device has a problem, so it might not be a good indicator.
Compared to Trinity (wm6), screen, performance, Bluetooth (no problems with SE DS 970) is a big improvement. Weight (190g) and size is not. Trinity felt very robust, particularly due to absence of keyboard.
Compared to Hermes, everything is much better.
Is the trinity 3G? If not, it's not a fair comparison.
Thanks for those answers.
Well I'm getting about 12 hours from my 3100 so it seems the Kasier is pretty good.
Battery 95% when started - GPS for 2+ hours + a few phone calls - battery 44%. Which I actually consider ok - GPS uses a lot of juice at the best of times. For long trips I will just use my external GPS receiver.
Most of the time you use GPS when you are in a car. Get a charger for in the car.
I have one at home, work and in the car. Works just great! Its a price to pay to be continuously online on a mobile phone, a price I am willing to pay. Just need to get used to charging even if battery isnt low.
I probably will buy a 2nd accu pack later.
If there's a Kaiser cradle that will be sooooo cool.
Battery is highly sufficient for myself.
Battery not too great for my usage patterns. 3G push all day and night, beam autoreceive off, bluetooth WIFI off. Lasts about 24 hours.
Just out of curiosity, what brightness/auto-dim/auto-off settings do you guys use?
i take my phone off the charger at 7am have push mail running and have band set to gsm. im down to 60% by 4pm with light use(30 min talk+15 min internet)
heavy use(1 hr talk + 30 minutes internet im down to 40%. subtract an extra 35-40% if i listen to internet music through BT for an hour while at the gym. when i use gps in the car i have the charger hooked up so no drain. i only use 3g when listening to internet radio watchin slingbox or surfing large pages. I dont think i could use this as a work phone without constantly chargin. at work im on the phone at least 3hrs a day.
Yep, Trinity is similar to TyTn I except no keyboard, but with GPS.

For long calls, I rather use a normal phone than a cell phone. Because at work I am using a laptop, I got used to charge it when I am using my laptop.
What helps is change the brightness settings.
Hi. I am trying to adapt free and commercial version of bandswitch and commmgrpro to work with kaiser to be able to switch between 2G and 3G with one click and a few seconds so save batterty. Because a unknown reason the system that works in Universal, Athena and Tynt doesnt work correctly with Kaiser and Soft Reset is required. I will keep you reported.

it's very fast if you use phone configuration... you set to GSM or AUTO, and in a few seconds you have 3G o GPRS connection..

The power it requires to lit the Screen, the less light the less power needed. Thus making the battery last (a bit) longer

Hi pepeto.
Yep, you are right, but you ve to go to phone/menu/options/band.....And this system doesnt allow to go to 3g, for example, for 10 minutes and then automatically switch back to 2G if you forgot to do it...
Its easier to do one click in today plugin....At least in my case because I ve to switch many times per day.....

Questions about Kaiser battery life

I've been researching this phone and I really like it so far, but I have a question about the battery.
I've read about the battery lasting something like 9 hours or so.. now my question is that 9 hours while constantly in use?
For example if I leave my house at 3:00 PM with a full charge hang out with my friends, end up at a bar at night, and I maybe talk for 20 minutes, send 5 txt messages and barely mess with the phone, will the phone dying around Midnight?
With that type of light usage it can last a day or even two deopending on how you config. & the radio you use.
The +or- 6-8 hours is with wifi, BT, 3g data usage, gps, etc...
I make it about half the day(5-6 hours), but I've got AgileMobile running all day using 3G connection so I'm assuming I'm running normally. This is greatly improved by switching off 3G(adds another 2-3 hours). I put maybe 15-30 minutes of calls on my phone a day, it's mostly a mobile web browser and instant messenger.
To get through a full day for me I charge the phone in my jeep while driving to / from work, and most days I eat lunch out so I charge it then as well.
Thanks for the replies. I will probably have all data connections turned off, and won't run GPS on days like that.
I really dig this phone, I just got a little worried about the chance that I won't go home after some heavy drinking and won't have a phone to use in the morning...
Also, I just read on a website review from Laptopmag.com that said "We left a fully charged Tilt on over a long weekend, and when we returned, the unit still had three out of four bars of battery life"... What do you think?
Well I think if you upgrade to wm6.1, you should gt alot better battery life.
I was sick (in bed most of the day) yesterday so I took my phone off charge at about 7am in the morning.
I sent some messages, surfed the internet with hsdpa for about 3 hours (and this is in a bad signal area, which means more battery consumption)
then did some wifi (20mins)
and a bluetooth recieve or two.
I just checked the battery level this morning (8am) and I still had 57% left. I was abit surprised because I thought it will have drained by now like it did with wm6. The point is wm6.1 has a lot better battery life. So for maxumum battery life you should upgrade.
Just my 2 cents
Battery life...
Hi I have had the kaiser for not long really... there's a neat program that tells you what is the drain, of the battery...
well if you are not touching it and not doing anything it drains about 6-10ma, so based on that yes, it can last for a looooooooong time, now when you call it goes to 200-400ma, so yes it drains more battery there. ( as you would think it would )
then again you can have the backlight to low, to use less battery, also, turn the screen off when not using it, and change the radio an a lot of hacks.
based on my experience using EDGE, the GPS, the screen, playing a game, sending some mms, and talking, it can really kill your battery in no time.
but you can also well get a car charger ( be carefull with those ) or a better battery, because to be realistic the one that comes default really sucks...
I have seen people talking about a 3000mah battery so that could really drive the phone for a loooooooong time, better think about other issues, like how sucky the camera is... ( maybe with the video drivers we are wating for this will get fixed ), also well, sometimes the performance is not that good, ( also video drivers I think ), besides that, and if you don't mind like I do, to have to wait for a few seconds to get things going on, the phone is a real jewel, if you live life in the fast lane, well maybe that second to open the keyboard will kill you

Seidio 1650 battery and the Mugen 1500 batteries seem to be good oem size batteries from I have read. THere is a thread on the Kaiser Accessories board about batteries.......
I had a similar experience with excessive current consumption in standby, likely caused by the GPS though it is off (see Post "TyTN II / Kaiser issue: GPS & battery drain").
Perhaps you should install "BatteryStatus". Make yourself familiar with the battery current display, and try to figure out how much power your device draws.
Another nice test is, switch all units off (phone, WLAN, Bluetooth, GPS, really everything). Make sure no program is running (TaskManager). Leave the fully charged phone alone for 5 hours or so. Recheck the battery capacity whether it dropped more than very few percent. If you do not need GPS frequently, you may simply try a soft reset. If you have interesting results, please be so kind and add them to the abovementioned thread, too.

Significantly improve battery life

Hi all,
After 2 days of testing this tweak, I have booked really good results with my Diamond.
The phone has been on and not connected to charger or computer for over 48 hours now, and the battery has dropped only to 50%. That's right, two full days and nights of stand-by time, with an occasional call here and there, a couple of text messages, and reading some email.
Before this tweak I had to charge the Diamond already after 24 hours or less.
So if you have low battery life problems, give this a go:
Advanced config tools -> disable the setting "GPRS auto attach"
Read about this setting here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395301&highlight=GPRS+auto+attach
Have fun and enjoy the longer battery life
But this has been discussed already and is only any good if you don't rely on GPRS a lot throughout the day surely? I mean I use Exchange and I'm sure it wouldn't work for me if I tweaked this setting.
Works great if you dont use the phone all that much but doesnt make much of a difference if you do make calls, send and receive sms texts..email send and receive etc etc.
Ive enabled that tweak and i still find the battery to be utterly rubbish for a phone of this power. Sure it helps conserve some of the battery but i can guarantee you that by 7pm tonight my phone will be dead...like it happened to me yesterday...went to work yesterday battery was 100%...made 3-4 calls...in total spent about 30 mins on the phone...browsed the internet for about 20 mins...sent and received 30 texts...watched a few youtube vids...checked my email a few times...not really heavy usage but by 7pm my phone was dead.
Not impressed with HTC and their monumental screw up with this battery..900mah is just not enough for this device if you want to use it properly that is. You would have thought they would have learned from Nokia when they first released their N95, that had a terrible battery on it as well...although with the n95 8gb the battery is much much better. Why they felt it only needed 900mah is quite beyond me...plus the battery gets hot which proves to me that the battery is not up to the job imo. Luckily the phone is good or else id have sent it back by now...guess ill have to wait for the extended battery to make an appearance. In fact i find the battery so rubbish that ive had to order a spare usb synch cable so i can charge my phone here at work.
Guys, if you want to substantially improve your battery life, go with a newer 1.37 ROM.
The older 1.35 ROM has serious battery life problems, there isn't much you can do about it without to cripple full functionality.
Where can i get the 1.37 ROM?
It isn't available in the e-club on htc.com
It's linked in the Diamond ROM Development forum.
You need to install the developer version of the HardSPL first, then install one of the 1.37 roms - I'm using the official HTC HK-English one with the 1.37.707.1 rom in it.
Works a treat for me - though I haven't had it on long enough to test battery time extensively yet.
I'm on the 1.37 rom, was on the 1.34 with my first unit and the battery is much better. I'm also noticing that the battery improves with 'age'. Plus I've got the dock on the way when it's released so that will help things no end I'm sure. When I'm in the car I shove a normal mini usb cable in from my Sony CD player and of course the upside of that is it will also play my music too instead of using USB drives. At work I use a spare USB and plug it in.
The battery is poo but having worked it in to a routine like that I hardly notice it now.
Unhooked my Diamond last night 22.00-ish from the usb cable and while I am typing now the battery is still more than 80% charged.
Texted alot today, called approx. 30 mins, checked my e-mail several times and played around with google maps for 20 minutes or so.
I did not tweak anything except that I flashed the 1.37 ROM and installed the newest Google-maps thingy.
So I can confirm that the new ROM saves alot of energy and that the battery-life gets better in time sounds also plausible.
With the 1.35 ROM the battery lasted 12 hours max with the same activities.
I've found that after a few days the battery is actually better than it was wen new. Must be that charge/discharging it a few times has helped...

actually I find your usage is a lot. during the day i will make one or two phone calls say 10 minutes. send an average of 5 sms texts and maybe check my email for a minute or 3. what takes most of my battery is when i read an ebook or do a game.

Maybe it is but for me i dont think its that high...as i said my nokia n95 8gb would last a good day or 2 before going completely dead and thats with the sort of usage that i described earlier. Anyways i have a synch cable coming which ill keep at work to charge the Diamond.
hey battery life is better after this tweak. but my 3g logo has changed... it's now in some greyish box... anyone know what this means?
I think this means that the network knows it's available but you haven't attached to the data service. I used to get a similar greying out of the globe icon on my P1i if the net knew it was there but I had unattached manually.
Hi i am novice with my HTC touch diamond & i am also facing the same problem of battery life.
you've shown some solution over there in your post. please, can you tell me where in my phone i need to go to apply this settings.

Touch Diamond Battery Problem

Hi, I just got my diamond 3 days ago and it seems to be having some battery problems, even when on standby it drains very fast, how long should the diamond last on a single charge (on standby, talk time, with wifi, or bluetooth) is there a benchmark to compare with.
the battery is just 900mha, like Nokia N95, so it is a bit underpowered, I suggest you to activate all energy saving tips through the program "Advance Config" and if you don't use/need UMTS & GPRS just fix your phone to don't discover automatically GPRS (always through Advance Config) and to GSM band (setting > phone > band), these reduce battery consumption.
bye,
davide
thanks, I'll try that, but even when not in use, the battery drains 20% to 30% per hr. tried it 3 time, same result, doesn't even reach 4 hrs of standby time
really strange... in any case your battery should go better after some cycles, wait at least 2/3 weeks before care
It's because the battery (like so many other aspects of this phone) sucks.
I got the new extended battery but that's useless too. It comes with a new cover for the phone but the battery itself is just twice as fat, so you end up with a 'sleek' phone that has a hunchback sticking out of it very awkwardly.
yep, I don't like the new battery, it makes a different phone
I have followed most of the battery saving advice that the usual programs can set up for you. I would say my phone, if its *just* standby can go 24 hours with just losing one "pin" on the battery meter. That means no calls, no peeking at the screen, no sms or otherwise communication. Since its hard to do this I have just tried 24 hours. If left on true standby I would say the battery would last for days.
I have a car charger and plug the Diamond into it while driving and in the office it sits in a cradle, at least I do not have to look for it under a pile of documents when it rings. Plus it serves as a fancy clock too!
The battery bar goes rarely below 70% while not plugged in.
3G and WiFi are extremly power hungry so do not expect hours of entertainment while they are on.
Fat battery is a bad road to take, I remember old Axim X51v (also HTC) with a 2.2Ah battery, it was like a brick. It is better to have a couple of small batteries rather than one big one obviously unless you want to play games on a transatlantic flight or go hiking for a long weekend.
One thing to remember is that your runtime grows faster than the battery capacity which is caused by the fact that at a slower rate of discharge the battery has a higher capacity, so if the 1350mAh battery is not too big it may be a worthwhile choice, I would expect the runtime to go up by between 75-100%. I just wonder how much longer will it take to charge and also you can say goodbye to most of the protective cases.

Buy a solar panel for mini usb and glue on the back of the diamond, then you will have infite standby time when left in the sun

I am using the Customised Comms manager and that's made a massive difference, basically 3G, Bluetooth and WiFi are off unless I need to use them.
I charged last night for the first time in 3 days, making calls and playing around in between

want one!!!
i get about 1.5 days outta my battery....
only running on 2g with light sensing on 20 or more sms a day with maybe an hour of phone calls all up.
i'll copy-paste my answer from an another thread:
using yr phone in a place where the reception is not good will drain yr battery faster.
i can add (there is a relation) that the level of radiation that any phone is emitting it is also higher when reception it is not strong enough. i've seen it demonstrated yesterday. entering in yr car double the level of radiation, in an elevator the radiation increases 10 folds! yr phone tries to connect and that's energy consuming and radiation emitting (electromagnetic).
i guess that you bought yr phone not too long ago. i know it sounds strange but after a few cycles yr battery's life is going to improve and i am not the only one to observe it.
don't stop the charging when the battery icon is full. i learned using a wall charger with LED (red for charging, green for charged) that after diamond's icon said 100% the charging continues for at least 30 minutes more (the led was not fully green but was blinking red-green).
from my experience u can use all power management option from shap's advanced configuration without loosing yr connectivity. i can not tell u what those option are but after using all i can tell that diamond's battery life improved.
with only 2G and some e-mailing downloading and checking this forum a few times my battery last for 1.5 days. of course their is also 1-1.5 hours of phone calls.
don't expect yr battery to last if you are using yr diamond as an entertainment center (movies and mp3) or as a battery only powered GPS navigator. i am using my GPS in my car always connected to my car charger.
I'm thinking about buying something like that to solve the problem :

Rom 1.37.707.1
Radio 1.00.25.03
I'm not yet sure what the problem was, but it has something to do with the sim card that I'm using, the sim stop receiving signal and I tried another sim. The battery life improved and now It last more than a day.

I am getting about 48 hours (I probably talk less than 30 minutes in that time). Using default x04ht rom on diamond with radio 1.00.25.05 (just flashed to 1.08.25.20 and getting about the same). Charge every day isn't bad, but every 1.5 to 2 days for a device like this; no complaints.

your opinion about 2 problems I've read about...

Hi all,
I'm currently the proud (and quite satisfied) owner of an HTC Artemis. The only problem is that the phone keeps hanging more often lately. I think the end of it's lifetime is approaching...
So I'm lokking for another phone. My demands are: GPS & wifi. I'm not looking for a photo-camera that can call, I've got a digital camera for taking photo's. Google told me that the Diamond was the phone for me (I'm very much into graphical stuff, and the g-sensor is just the bomb!). However, when google-ing i've read about 2 issues. I'd like to get your opinions on these:
1. Reception
This is an issue I've found only very little reference to, so it might not be an actual problem. I've read that the reception on the diamond is quite low. I've read that a tester couldn't reach a reception of 5 out of 5 bars, no matter how close or far he was from the GSM-tower. The best he got was 3 bars out of 5. Is this an exception or do you also have this problem?
2. Battery life
OK, this one I've read a lot about. I've read about people whose Diamond gave up after 5 hours just in standby, but I've also read about people who use their Diamond "normally" (thats a very vague term) and who can do that for about 3 days without recharging the battery.
What about your Diamonds. What do you use them for (and how often), and how long does your battery last?
Are there perhaps tweaks that can help to lengthen the battery-life (can 3G be switched off for example, I think that is one of the main power-drains, right?)
Of course, if you have another phone I've missed in my Google-tour, feel free to mention it!
1, I live out in the sticks in the UK and can get full signal on the Orange network without any problems. The 2G and 3G signals are pretty much identical to what I got on my old Tytn so from my experience the reception is not a problem.
2, I've read a lot about the battery life being rubbish on the diamond. I charge overnight every night, but the remaining power at the end of the day is pretty much always more than what I had on my Tytn.
I probably use it for the following daily:
20 mins phone calls
a bit of playing around with GPS but nothing much
up to around 30 mins wifi
data connection usually on all day
an hour or so playing around with the phone apps
at weekends I poll my IMAP server every 15 mins and it doesn't make a lot of difference to the battery.
Right now, it's about an hour before I'll go to bed and I'm still on 50% battery so I don't see much problem with the life. I know it's a lot lower than non pda phones, but if I had a normal phone I'd only be using it for calls from the above list
Reception for me is a little less than my TyTn, but not enough to worry about.
Battery was terrible at first, but has settled down now. I don't think people realise that they probably thrash the battery for the first week or so playing around getting to know the device. Usually I have about 50% charge left after 18 hours so if turned it off at night I could squeeze two days from the phone without charging. Usage wise, pretty much the same as StarMonkey but I browse in Opera for about an hour a day, not with WiFi though.
Battery life might bother some, but if you've had a TyTn or another Smartphone you'll be used to charging more or less every night. This one's no different.
Thanks for your opinions! anybody else who wants to share his or her experience?

As I said, I have an Artemis right now, and I need to recharge twice a week. I don't use bluetooth, and I turn off Wifi or GPRS when I'm not using it. I think that helps with battery-life.
I have no problem with the signal but the battery is much worse than with my Artemis or tytn II. I use tom tom a lot and get 2 hours max on the diamond. Where my Artemis and tytn was over 4 hours. But extra batteries are cheap enough on e-bay.
