Ameo/Athena upgrade with ipod hard disk - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo Accessories

It has crossed my mind that it might be possible to put an ipod classic/video hard drive into the Athena. I have, unfortunately, no idea as to wether the current HD on my 8gig Ameo is CF or ZIF. Or wether the OS will see 40gb
Q Does anyone know what type HD interface is present in the Ameo and how does can I open the case? I have already taken the torx screws off the bottom but that does not free up anything and without knowing what happens next I am reluctant to break anything.

Thanks for that reference PBL, as you say all very interesting.
I must admint it looks a little daunting all the pics about taking the darn thing appart and then getting it back working again. I would guess that the 40gb hd or something of tha size is going to be physically too big. But I would happily settle for 32gb if it can be made to work.

32MB is the limit for FAT12, not a limitation of WM per se. WM however reads FAT16/32 just fine, which means you can access up to 2GB/8TB (yes, you read that right). The Athena's HDD is formated in FAT32.

You're right there - the iPod Classic uses 1.8" notebook HDDs, which are much larger than the sub-1" HDD used in the Athena.

No.. I absolutely detest the iPhone.
I already have my diamond, but tonight (as I put loads of music on my device) ive been thinking about it more and more... why didnt HTC put at least 8GB in it or add a Micro SD slot.
Other than that, I absolutely adore my diamond. Its a fantastic device and a great upgrade to my HTC Touch.
The whole 'mine is bigger than yours' thing doesn't bother me.
It's a phone, not an entertainment system for me.
I always carry a usb drive and am rarely far from a real pc.
When I ordered it I hadn't noticed the lack of card slot and I've only ever had a 2gig card in my previous smartphones. Maybe I just don't understand the concern to have so much on a media player but then again I did used to buy C120 tapes for my walkman

I cant remember the exact figure but it would add several mm to the device to put in a MicroSD slot so that's the main reason they didnt. There may also be power savings and speed improvements but i beleive the size issue was the most important.

Turns into one too you try and do anything clever on it ;-)
I'm syncing my diamond to my iMac(itunes) using missing sync, so I'm not really sure whether this is possible using media player on windows, haven't been using windows for years so I have no idea as to it's playlist capabilities...
I've got two playlists that I'm syncing (everytime my diamond connects, basically every night) the first one I add music to as I please (songs I have to actually add to the playlist)... The second however consists of songs played less than three times... I have a pretty large library and my diamond pretty much always have music on it that I'm not tired of, hence I find the 4Gb quite sufficient. This is also available for videos, or video podcasts (if you use your diamond as a video player)
They'll comeout with one with more memory, until then, go to www.modmyifone.com:)

I absolutely agree. Everyone knows that the Diamond has 4Gb and is not expandable. Pretty pathetic really if they buy it and then realise they want more space.
I have stored 100+ pics, 15 hours of music and installed all programs in the internal storage - and I still have 2,4 GB free.

Not really. Its like anything else, you buy it thinking it'll be fine - its only when the space runs out that you realise you want more.
And no - dont go suggesting the iphone as an alternative, to me its a compromise. I want a kick ass Windows Mobile device. The diamond is damn near perfect apart from the storage issue. Curious HTC went this route as
1) Flash memory is very cheap. Hardly any cost difference between 4GB and 8GB
2)A Micro SD slot will not impact size that much
Do any of you think there will be any third party solutions (adaptors of some sort?)

The forum is for trying to solve a problem and sharing information.
Moaning - perhaps understandable to a certain limit.
Now, you know there is nothing you (or anyone else can do) about the 4 GB internal sotrage that you got with your phone.
If there is a new version of the diamond, with more memory or an external card slot.. someone will definitely share that info.
Unless that's what you were doing, I don't think that moaning is going to get you anywhere or achieve anything.
An exercise in futility.
If you just want to share your opinion, there are plenty of places where you can do so.
Doing it on a forum where people are looking for solutions, not exactly the best approach.
Just my view

Possible to hack Dualcor cPC Windows Mobile 5.0?

Hi everyone!
This is definitely off-topic as the Dualcor cPC is not even in commercial production/circulation.
I managed to purchase a used engineering unit & will be getting it in a week's time.
I'm interested to know if it's at all possible to hack the cPC to upgrade it to WM6.x?
It is currently running WM5.0 with custom video driver developed by Dualcor for the 5" 800x480 display.
Anyone with any idea where I should start?
The WM5.0 is running on Intel's PXA-263 400MHz CPU with 128Mb RAM & 1Gb ROM.
I welcome any ideas or feedback regarding if this is possible.
Thanks!

Well, as it's ARM-based and running wm5, yes, you can port wm6 to it, but for that you'll need to find a way to upload custom firmware (i.e. you need an official wm5.0 firmware and the updater utility)

sp3dev,
Thanks for the tip!
I do not have an official WM5 update for the cPC because it was not released but what if I could dump the ROM? Would that help? Where do I begin? As for the Update utillity, I really do not have an idea. Will MTTY be able to reveal anything?
TIA!

Hi josefcrist!
I got it on eBay but they are very rare.
These were only really released as engineering units to limited clients so I was fortunate to get it on eBay.

Okay...where do I go from here?
Okay, I finally got hold of my Dualcor cPC & have been able to play around with it for the past few days quite extensively.
Two things I need to do are (1) Replace the internal main Li-ion battery & backup battery (WM5.0) (2) Possibly replace the CPU fan because it's really noisy.
From the specs, it appears this unit is an earlier engineering model & not the ones that were circulated for field test.
Mine has 30Gb 4200rpm HDD for Windows XP Tablet Edition 2005 SP2 (1Gb DDR-400 RAM) & 512Mb ROM for Windows Mobile 5.0 (128Mb RAM).
My only obstacle is to find out a way to open up the device. I cannot see any visible holes for any screws to hold the unit together. The only clue is the four silver knobs at the front of the unit.
Where do I go from here?
I'm really keen on upgrading to WM 6.x. The CPU & hardware should be capable of running WM 6.x.

Thanks for the generous offer but I'll keep this unit. I've a Touch Pro myself too so that won't be useful to me either.
I managed to open up the unit to take a look inside & managed to pull out the internal Li-ion battery pack. It's huge. It sits right in the middle of the unit along with the 30Gb 1.8" Hitachi HDD. And it's really tight inside there...not much room for hacking/adding additional hardware like the Asus EeePC 70x.
Here's some pictures...enjoy.

Thanks...I'll keep reminding myself to count my blessings daily.
Now, need to find someone who's able to replace the Li-ion cells with usable good quality ones. It looks like 4 standard Nokia cells lined together side my side. That should provide a total of 18V & approximately 3-4Ah.
Took a dive with Windows 7 RTM but due to the lack of drivers, it left the device unusable. Thankfully I imaged the drive before wiping it out so I'm back to Windows XP TPC 2005.
One accessory I hope to add is a descent BT 2.0 adapter that works in XP & WM via the USB port. I discovered that one of my old Billionton BT 1.2 adapter worked in XP & WM and it uses the Broadcom chipset. I'm hoping to get a mini USB BT adapter.
Any suggestion?

BT stack for WM5.0
Okay, finally got myself a mini USB Bluetooth 2.0+EDR adapter.
It works flawlessly on Windows XP TPC 2005 with my Thinkoutside BT keyboard & Kensington BT mouse but I'm having difficulty using it in WM5.0.
The adapter has a CSR chipset.
Anyone know of a WM BT stack that is compatible with the CSR chipset that I can use on the WM ROM?
A picture of the BT adapter is in the attachment.
Update:
Found out that there is a bthcsr.dll built into the ROM already & the registry settings indicate it's a PnP driver. The BT adapter works when I have it plugged in when in Windows XP TPC 2005 & then switch over to WM5.0. But it's performance is poor & it is difficult to maintain an active connection with the adapter. I suspect this driver is not fully compatible with the new CSR chipset.
512Mb x 8 = 4Gb?
Interestingly, I found out that the chips in the fifth dis-assembly picture are Samsung DDR2 DRAM chips.
K4T51083QC-ZCD5 Samsung Electronics 512Mb C-die DDR2 SDRAM
But why are there 8 of these?
Datasheet: http://www.samsung.com/global/syste...nt/512Mbit/K4T51043QC/ds_k4t51xx3qc_rev19.pdf
From the datasheet, it's obvious that it's two sets of 128Mx4 which gives 1Gb of DRAM for the Windows XP.

Hi...
I've forgotten about this thread & just dropped by today.
Nothing much has changed...still on WM5.0.
Did try to install Windows 7 Basic on it but due to missing drivers, had severe stability issues.
Now back to original OS.
leocaste,
I did not have any issue with installing programs on the WM5.0.
What types of program were you trying to install?
As for rebooting WM5.0, I too had issues with that.
It would not reboot without pressing the reset button.
If I run some power management program, it would freeze there.
BTW, do you have the VGA adapter?
Mine is missing the adapter & I've yet to find a compatible replacement.
Any clue as to where I can get one?

[Q] SDXC Compatibility?

Hi everyone!
do anyone of you know if the Optimus Speed Supports SDXC? (or any Bigger memory cards than 32 Gigs?) Officially, LG said, i believe, it Supports only 32Gigs, however, i`ve read somewhere, that the only Difference between SDHC and SDXC is that SDXC uses the "exFAT" Filesystem! Hardware-wise, even a "old" SD 1.0 reader should be able to read both, SDHC and SDXC its just the right drivers u need... so do anyone of you know, if Android supports the exFAT Filesystem? if android Supports it, i believe so, Android should be able to read/write the Big Cards?
sorry for my horrible english by the way ...

These cards are confirmed working in several Android's now:
http://www.androidnz.net/2011/09/sandisk-64gb-micro-sdxc-cards-confirmed.html
Am guessing that all that is needed for using an SDXC card, is just a driver. As simple as that.
I remember like 5-6 years ago i used to have a pocked pc and it was when SDHC standards arrived, and by just installing a 2kb file or smthn, they were completely usable on any old Device. So am guessing the same thing applies here...

This is true. There is technically no difference between between the SDHC and SDXC-cards, just the size. You need a file-system which supports >32GB-cards. (I have a transformer, which has built-in support for NTFS, and will happily accept SDXC-cards larger than 32GB provided it's formatted with NTFS.)
I haven't tested if any ROM for the O2X can mount SD-cards with anything else than FAT, but it's easy enough to test I guess. Just format a(ny) card with ext2/3 and insert it. If it's recognized it should be possible to use cards >32GB.
Did neither of you guys see my post? These are working in Android devices, no special drivers needed. I don't think anyone has tried in a 2x specifically, but I would be surprised if they didn't work.

So who is selling CM7 this time? Nook2Android

Saw the story on Engadget, but not seeing any mention of it here besides them saying thanks to XDA for "the dual boot script".
Which joker is selling CM7 this time?
I wish it was me, but I have more decency than that.
I just feel like he should AT LEAST lower the prices. $35 for an 8GB stick? That's crazy. $90 for a 32GB is a pretty good deal though. I know some places still sell those for $100+

buy has them for $60 ( from what it looks like on the website, not through a reseller, and they are a "authorized sandisk reseller", so i would think they are legit)
newegg has then for $80, closer to that $90 price-tag...

Installing CM7 to an SD card is rather easy and now with the dual boot script, it makes switching between the stock os and CM7 pretty easy. Why someone would pay for free is beyond me.

DIY for a technological half-wit
After reading the story in Engadget yesterday about converting the Nook Color into an Android tablet, I made up my mind to buy the Nook and the Nook2Android conversion card. Then I began seeing comments by readers about Nook2Android actually using technology developed by XDA and making money off freeware in which they had no role developing.
I make my living as a writer so I'm sensitive to matters such as copyrights, giving credit where credit is due, and being screwed over by plagiarizers.
As I sort through the forums here, however, about converting the Nook Color to an all-purpose tablet, I realize my vocabulary is incredibly limited. Reading about CM7, for example, really doesn't make it any more clear to me whether I should use that to make the conversion. Or is it Froyo? What's the difference?
My real question, I suppose, is this: what do I as an unsavvy technophobe need to do to convert a Nook Color to a dual-boot Android-based tablet?
Advice gratefully accepted and flames gracefully borne.

Here you go, this is about as un-tech savvy as it can get http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Barnes_&_Noble_Nook_Color:_Full_Update_Guide
Basically you burn an .img file to a microsd card, put the card in, boot up your nook, launch an app called Rom Manager, click "install clockworkmod," click "install cm7," and you're done
Update: this method is NOT dual boot though, sorry I missed that you wanted that

Appreciate you taking the time to get the real story as well as your honesty! There's multiple ways to do things, the closest way is using an image by user verygreen on this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
Post in that thread with any questions, and good luck! Just need to use the right program and have a card reader and it shouldn't be any problem.
Thanks very much! I've been going through the Cyanogen site, as well. The wiki link and XDA link are enormously helpful.

Wisdom gathered from sifting through XDA Nook Forums:
Try out a rock solid version of CM7 on the nook with no strings, as in doesn't touch the internal programming of the device.
You need a MicroSD card, and you should make sure it is a SanDisk brand card. 4 gig or better, I recommend 8 or 16.
1 - Download the image at this XDA thread.
2 - Download and install WinImage if windows, not sure the mac equivalent. Get version 8.1
3 - Burn the image to your SanDisk MicroSD card using WinImage.
4 - Download and install EASEUS Partition Manager.
5 - Use EASEUS to extend the last partition on the MicroSD card to fill all the unused space. Amount unused depends on the MicroSD card size.
6 - Insert MicroSD card to powered off Nook. For best results ensure a full battery charge.
7 - Power on the Nook, leave it alone until it fully boots. The boot animation will skip a bit, this is normal.
8 - After booting, don't touch anything until the screen times out. It needs to finish installing a lot of stuff on the MicroSD card, but you won't see this happening. Give it time to settle.
9 - Very important: tap the google market icon on the main desktop, and set up your google market account. If you delete this icon before you do, you may have to re-image the card to get it back.
10 - Go to the market, and download the app "SD Speed Increase" by Diego Stamigni. It's a free app. Run it and set the slider to 2048, make sure it'll run on every boot. Set the setting, and make sure to grant it superuser permissions.
11 - Enjoy!
It'd be nice if somebody doing this would at least donate some of the profits to the ROM creator so both could pocket a few bucks
So, I've been trying to follow your directions but no matter what I do, WinImage simply will not write the image. I've tried it to a 4 and 16GB Kingston MicroSD, I've tried it to a Microcenter MicroSD 4GB, and I've tried it to a brand new, just opened Sandisk 4GB MicroSD. All fail with an unspecified error, simply a red X in a box using the 32 bit version of Winimage on Windows 7 Home Premium x64.
AHA! I hear you say, "Use the 64 bit WinImage!" I thought so too, and tried it. It insists that the file is "open for reading by another program," even after a reboot. It says the same thing on 3 different SD card ROMS I downloaded.
Any ideas? Is there an alternative to WinImage (it seems somewhat half-baked).
Thanks!
It sounds like you are getting closer with the 64-bit version.. I had a hell of a time with the "file is open for reading" error as well, but a reboot always cleared mine up.
Not sure what else you could try... Maybe there is some windows service or "minimized" app that would have the file open for any reason? Just guessing at this point....

I've never used a 64-bit operating system, so keep that in mind.
People who don't like winimage generally use Win32 Disk Imager
Good luck
Edit:
Sorry accidentally this was submitted, phone in my pocket.
No relation to this post whatsoever.

Just as an FYI, I use this app on my Win7 x64 and it works perfectly. So don't let the "32" scare you away.
I've had no issues with WinImage on Windows 7 64-bit.
From my F!AQ:
F! I can't find and/or write the disk image in WinImage!
The command to write the image is Disk>Restore Virtual Hard Disk Image on Physical Drive. You will have to show file type All Files every time in order to find the .img file.

I would definitely recommend verygreen's image and method over the one Blue mentioned.

[Q] time to upgrade work laptop.... cant decide

Ok, I could make this go on and on and on but I'll keep it short.
I have a lenovo T410 and LOVE it. Luckily, being THE IT guy, i get pick of the crop when it comes to getting a computer. I keep it civil and dont go over 1200.
I am looking at another lenovo (dont even try to dissuade me) and cant decide between:
X1
X220
T420
T520
Ultimately, its just a size difference as these are the configurations I would go with:
http://www.pcconnection.com/IPA/Sho...+t520&Sku=12866514+12594117+12618756+12570377
I know the X1 has just one slot of RAM and that would hurt, and I was thinking of getting an ultrabay adapter for another 500GB 7200 RPM drive that I have laying around.... so the X1 would be just because it seems like an INCREDIBLE combination of power and portability (and while i think the "thinklight" is the bees knees, a backlit keyboard on a lenovo would rock!)
I know some models have the IPS display as an option but I'm trying to keep the $$ reasonable so that i can continue my annual upgrade
So, given that i lug my laptop around daily and toss it in and out of my bag and carry it by one hand too often for my directors comfort...
What pc do you have experience with and think would better suit a guy that supports 5 worksites and has a VERY busy lifestyle and uses the laptop for work during 9-5 and play (portal 1/2, halflife deathmatch, whatever) afterhours.
I really think i could pick any of them and be happy.... just want to be VERY happy with my decision. .... i am completely stuck at this point...
Thanks guys!
Smallest display saves money for upgrades. Smaller display means lighter and more portable for work. Haven't seen any that you want, but for IT work laptop. I'd go small and fast.
Just get the one you like the physical look of. Lappies are waaaaaay to commoditized by now.

This is way too hard on my phone to pull off. Look at the posts from July 3rd. Second to last page if you have it set to 50 posts per page.
