Hi all,
There are many reports of the Expansys units being grey - and not registering on HTCs site.
There is a thread at coolsmartphone.com were DeviceWire reports that it will be the FIRST distributor of the UK Diamond but this will be mid to late June: http://www.devicewire.co.uk/eshot/htc_touch_diamond_delivery/index.html
Mine is coming from TotalPDA. I just called them, they have stock but are under embargo and cannot send them until next Tue (10th). Question is, if DeviceWire say they are going to be first then are the TotalPDA ones gonna be grey too?
Has anyone got an Expansys one to register on HTCs site? Has anyone else got a TotalPDA order waiting? Has anyone else got any more information?
Confusing....

Word from HTC is that any device being bought outside Hong Kong atm is a grey import, has no warranty with HTC and ofc, no registration benefits

This is TOTALLY TRUE. I tried to register my phone through the HTC site and it doesn't recognise the Serial number. I bought mine through Expansys
Grey.........my mood!
I have just spoken to HTC who told me that I cannot register my expansys Diamond with club HTC because they have not updated the website database, he assured me that my 'grey import' has a full warranty which exspansys will honor and that I will be eligible for downloads once they have updated the servers.
Even more confusing, should I send the unit back or not??
Get that in writing!!!!
R
hahaha
tho a happy news....
Expansys will honour the warranty as stated on their forums. But as for updates etc, id get what HTC have said to u in writing because some people are saying that HTC wont provide updates for any 'grey' Diamonds.
The expansys forums state that they themselves will honor any warrenty on the device.
I'm not too worried about lack of updates from HTC; Firstly 'cos they haven't been to quick in releasing them in the past, and secondly, that's why we're all here on XDA
Side note: Got mine yesterday. Loving it

Well they gave me a case reference, which will be e-mailed to me, when I get home from work I will post the e-mail.
I am a little concerned how exspansys have deleted the original forum thread from the Expansys website and have not returned my call requesting a returns number.....
Expensive strikes again
ill wait
and get a real one from orange
I arrived yesterday from the expansys, and mine is black
In case of record, I tried to do it in HTC e-Club and receive a message that is not a product of HTC.
Already there have been a Cruise and a P3300.

Wich would suggest it's "grey". It's not the colour of the device ppl are referring to when they are talking about grey devices, only that it's an import from the asian market and HTC isn't too happy about that practice, and therefore limit your experience with lack of support..

But there's conflicting reports. Some people are saying HTC will not support it outside HK, others are saying they will. I think you have to assume 'maybe' they will 'maybe' they won't. And if your that concearned call HTC yourself before you buy.

Good morning,
We confirm they are not grey import. We have had a lot of reaction in this way already, you have one year warranty through HTC when buying it.

no problems registering Diamond with HTC
I had no problems registering my Diamond with HTC. Mine is a Hong Kong serial no so I Just registered it on the English Hong Kong site as the Australian site gave an error when I entered the serial. No issues at all now.
I've just talked to HTC customer service hotline in Denmark. He had to ask his boss but the conclusion was that HTC do have a worldwide warranty and if anything happens to my diamond I can ship it to UK (I live in Denmark) because they have a HTC global repair center there. I'll probably have to pay the shipping cost and it might take a little longer but the warranty will cover the repair. He said if it was him he would keep it.
I didn't get it in writing but he gave me a case no. and his name.

MoDaCo has teamed up with Expansys to bring you an exclusive preorder offer on this hot new device!
Our bundle, priced exactly the same as the regular TyTN II, offers
you:
* a HTC TyTN II

Hey man whats up,
Im also in HK and thinking about ordering my TYTN II from device wire. However I just got an email from expansys Hong Kong. They claim they will have the device in stock next week and they quoted me a special price of HK Dollars $6100 which includes delivery! Also they say that it will come with a 1 year HK warranty!
So now im so confused with what to do! Just spoke to device wire in the UK and they said they have the TYTN II in stock now and can ship it out today to me! But if i order it from them ill be paying like HKD $ 1500 more (About $200 US) And also will have to rely on the UK Warranty!!!

it might be cheaper but i will really hate to pay a few hundred less to then wait for a 'not in stock' order. i will check with them first and make sure my delivery date is confirm before paying. i chose to get it from devicewire.com coz they have it in stock and ready to ship on the spot thru the phone call i made to them. they charged me UK37 pounds for the DHL delivery. i will post when i get the phone so that u will know how long it took DHL to deliver to hkg.
I got my Diamond delivered yesterday from Expansys, the unit arrived almost a week early which was fantastic, however it appears Expansys are selling grey imports, see: http://www.expansys.com/ft.aspx?k=110164
a. What is a grey import?
b. Why does the HTC website not acknowledge the serial number?
c. Should I sent the unit back and wait until the 'UK Official Stock' arrives?
Thanks.
A grey import, to my knowledge, means that its not the white (i.e legal) market, but not the black (i.e. illegal) market, but inbetween. So, was imported legally, but youre not meant to sell it to UK residents. Which in this case means no UK warranty and as you have seen, a serial not recognised by HTC UK's website.
As other people have suggested, wait until the other stores are shipping real UK stock, i.e devicewire, clove etc, and then call them and complain, that way, you dont have to wait until they get official stock in.
Rory
a. Rory's right. Check this out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grey_market
"The grey market is the trade of something legal through unofficial, unauthorized, unintended distribution channels."
So basically, they're importing the Touch Diamond and selling it before they should. Nothing particularly illegal, but HTC are going to be really angry with Expansys.
b. I have no idea. Perhaps you could get in contact with HTC and see what they say you should do.
c. I would refer you to my answer for b.
If your in the UK you're covered by distance selling regulations. You can send it back within 7 days
http://www.oft.gov.uk/advice_and_resources/resource_base/legal/distance-selling-regulations/
Also you are perfectly entitled to send it back because it is not as described - which of course its not if its a grey import.
If expansys give you grief you can use trading standards, or even have your credit card company retract the payment and deal with it for you
Expansys usually tell you all the details of each handset before you buy it such as language and warranty coverage, depending on which Expansys site you are ordering from (I've found alarming price differences for the same Touch Diamond depending on where you order it from) so you need to strike a balance assuming you have no import restrictions.
I just realised something... Remember when Lik-Sang imported PSP's to the UK and Europe, and even to the SCEE President, and Sony sued them at the High court and got them closed down, stating that the power adapters weren't safe, could HTC do the same? Would serve Expansys right for
A) misleading and
B) overpricing.
Rory
I dont get this guys, HTC.com are partners with Expansys, and HTC are selling direct online through Expansys.
HTC´s online store;
http://www.htcaccessorystore.com/uk/p_htc.aspx
Powered by Expansys!
If you can register the Diamond on HTC's website then I figure it is ok and the warranty stands. However, if you cannot then I would be starting to think about returning it and asking Expansys to pick up all related costs...
R
Seeing as there's post left, right and center (many of which are spiraling off topic) .. I thought I'd leave a note regarding my recent phone call to HTC UK Support.
I asked if the stock being sold at expansys (where I got my device from) was a grey import. She didn't say yes, but did say that the Europe release wasn't until August/September (I didn't realise it was as late as that - have my doubts as to the accuracy of that statement!).
I couldn't get a clear answer about the quoted RAM (128 versus)
I then asked about the warranty itself - I was told by a HTC rep, that if there was a problem with my phone that could be repaired and covered under warranty, then I could have it sent to a global repair center, which is based in the UK
Just thought some would like to hear this.
I got the same response regarding the warranty issue, when I called a HTC costumers service hotline earlier today.

Warranty Looks Good with Expansys Diamonds
I ordered my Diamond from Expansys on Thursday for Friday delivery last week - it arrived and I eagerly went to set it up only to find that it would not accept my Sim card???
I telephoned the HTC support hotline who proceded to take the IMEI number and Serial number of the phone - they asked me where I was based (UK) and who I had purchased the phone from (Expansys) - they then spent 30 minutes trying to resolve the issue with me (we failed) so they gave me a reference number, a fault number and declared it DOA.
I then called Expansys took down the details and issued me with a replacement phone which was delivered on Saturday morning and I returned the faulty one having recieved an RMA number and instructions.....
I'd say that was a pretty good service from both HTC and Expansys?
Absolutely

Ermmm i rung up totalpda and they said they are expecting stock in next week..in fact i placed my order with them and they said i should have it by the 24th of this month. According to them, it will be definitely uk spec.
Yep. Through what people have been told by these companies, that seems to be the official news - a worst-case-scenario release date of the 23rd...
I sent my MDA Pro to Turnonyourmobile.com in London for repair about three weeks ago. I still don't have it back. I also ordered a second-hand MDA Pro from them about two weeks ago. It still hasn't arrived. My e-mails to them bounce. I did place an international phone call to them a week ago and they answered, and said everything was coming along. So: are these guys for real? Are they still in business? What experience have any of you had with them? Is there anyone on this forum living in London who can check them out?
Call them once everyday, and email them everyday. Give your reference numbers when you send an email so they know who you are and which product you bought and when. Also ask for a refund if they don't send it.
Did you get a tracking number?
No Tracking Number
No, they haven't given me a tracking number. And: it's an international phone call from the USA to the UK, so I certainly don't want to call them everyday!
International Calls
Yahoo Messenger Voice calls are only $0.02 /min or less to UK landline. Yeah, call them everyday if necessary.

You have to complain, if you don't complain they will take your money...that's what USPS did to me when I gave up complaining about a package worth 150 dollars that THEY LOST but I never received it.
Hi, I have some very good deals with Turnonyourmobile, no problems with them, very fast shipping, good second hand devices. May be there is some problem in the communication, (try to contact over ebay).

The Saga Continues
I finally made phone contact with Harrison in Customer Service at Turnonyourmobile. He said that they did receive the payment of $200 from PayPal on July 1 but have not shipped the spare phone yet. He says they will ship it tomorrow and e-mail me a tracking number. It will have the T-Mobile MDA Pro ROM version 5 on it (a Vodafone 900); he says version 6.x is unstable on the Universal (and I think I agree with that). He also said that my present MDA Pro is still in the shop; it continues to have various "faults." So, at least, they haven't lost it!
