Use as mass storage device for USB card Stereo? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

I have a car stereo that will allow me to plug in a USB flash drive for example loaded with standard MP3's / WMA's or what not.
Im looking for a way to be able to hook up my ATT tilt, and have the music on there recognized as being on a mass storage device.
Im guessing there is some software out there that could accomplish this but after searching for a few days I have yet to find anything.
Anyone have any ideas?

well yes yes i know I could do that lol
But pulling that tiny freakin card in and out of my phone 1000 times im sure it will end up getting sucked into the black hole under the seat of my car never to be seen again.
Also It would be nice to do it via the phone as It would charge the phone at the same time.

Might have found something

I've never cared for the WM5Storage on the Kaiser. I've found it best to use Softick Card Export 2 to make the Kaiser into a USB Card Reader. Well worth the money.

Audio over USB to PC?

I was wondering if there's a way to direct the audio out from my Tilt to my PC using the USB connection? I'd like to be able to play video files on the Tilt and have the audio fed over the USB connection to my PC... is that possible?
Tried some searching but I was only able to find info about a USB->3.5mm headphone adapter, which isn't what I'm looking for.
Thanks,
-Brett.
why not just play the said video files directly on the pc ?

If you have a good sized SD card, check out the free download at Mojopac. Used in conjunction with Softick card exporter (turns your phone into a USB stick), you can carry around your own PC environment on your phone that works on any PC so you can load WMP 11 and all the codecs on that.
Plug the USB into the PC, loadup Mojo off your phone and play the files on the PC without effecting it as it treats your SD card as the C: drive!
it would require alot of programming to do
also i dont really see much demand for it
as much people want to stream audio and video together
what you can do is use the "USB->3.5mm headphone adapter"
and connect it to the lineIn / mic input on your pc
that would make your pc play the audio too

I've got a 3.5mm headphone adapter on order, so I guess that would work once it arrives. I do have a line in on my laptop that I could use; I was just hoping to do it via software with my existing hardware.
Farsquidge: That sounds like it might work but it also sounds like overkill for what I was looking for.

Yeah, it may be a bit OTT for you.
It has saved me carrying a laptop around though and its free!
Hope it all works out for you.
Rather than installing mojopac, you could just use VLC Portable and run it from your phone memory card in the same way using softick.
http://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/vlc_portable
Or just pick up a 2 or 4 gig usb stick, slap VLC portable on it along with your vids etc and just use it as your portable movie/music player on any PC thats to hand.

Connect USB Stick

Would it be possible to connect a USB stick to the Diamond by using this adapter ?
Diamond has no USB Host, so no
It would look ridiculous anyway. The Diamond is so small you can afford to carry that AND an Archos anyway. That is what I will do.

I think so too, but as you can see in service manual, htc connects an memory card reader through an Y-USB cradle to read the service-test sd card.
Doesn't that mean that there must be a way to host a device?
(The second one is an ac-adaptor.)

yeah it looks like it works on the picture.
would be nice to be able to add usbstick to our Diamond, for backup and easy install
where did the pic come from? does the diamond recognize the flash drive?
The picture is from the HTC service manual - it shows how to attach the service test sd card to the device.
I think it should recognize the drive, otherwise they couldn't test the device...

Where can we download it?
xda-dev wiki... like all the other manuals too.
Ok, I must be mistaken here then. Diamond have USB host, at least hardware support for it (unless they have some crossover MC inside this "Y-cable").
Hovewer it seems that it have only limited support in bootloader to load ROM image from memory stick.
Question is if it have the host driver in the Windows Mobile to actually support USB accesses inside WM?
Even soldered myself an y-wire for testing.
Inside Windows Mobile nothing happens when the stick is plugged in. (used an 8GB USB-Stick)
Diamond research section is not so far in the moment, so I don't know how to test if it will work in bootloader mode.
I think they have some electronics switched between device and disk, for access without driver.
edit: removed stupid thoughts, now simple using cat command...

Hi
Is there any progress on this? Do you think we may have usb host for the Diamond at some point in the future?
So, let's push this thread.
I tried to connect an 8GB USB stick throught my self-soldered wire, I've put Diamond into "USB trigger mode" but without any success.
Now we have to figure out which devices can be connected in USB-mode...
I got a few exams in this week, so I'm gonna try at weekend to connect an simple sd card reader.

USB to PC a Disk Drive mode

Hi There,
i have been searching for a while now but i could not find it anywhere.
is there a tool for the tytn II thats makes it possible to connect it to the computer and that you get a menu with the following:
active sync
disk drive mode
internet sharing
just like the diamond.
on my rom i only have these 2 options
active sync

That's because on the Kaiser nothing but the CardExport program manages to emulate disk drive mode.
Is the disk drive mode that CardExport gives you noticeably better than just exploring the phone when it's plugged in normally? I know when you do it that way it threatens to convert your files when you copy them over, but in my experience it never actually does.
The only time I used disk drive mode on my Hermes was so I could charge it via my PS3 usb port since I spend a considerable amount of time next to my PS3 (my ps3 is next to my theater chair since I have a 122" projection screen and the Projector and surround sound system - and PS3 - are next to the chairs in the back of the room.)
I haven't tried it on my Kaiser since when I got the Kaiser it came with another charger which I placed there so I don't need the PS3 to charge anymore.
I'd be interested to see if it would increase the transfer speed though.. my God is it slow..
There is one utility 'nueMassStorage' that is supposed to do this, however I can't get it to work. I have it cooked into my rom and it does indeed present you with the option of ActiveSync or Mass Storage when you connect it to a PC via USB. ActiveSync works as normal but unfortunately I can't get the Mass Storage to work - it appears as a drive but Windows can't open it.
Maybe you can have more luck with it? Its available here as an OEM package to cook into a ROM or as a .cab to install.

I think that's cooked into the HyperDragon III Raphael ROM.. I'll test it out later.. I only ever hit the active sync button since I don't like transferring over USB due to the ridiculously slow connection.
try WM5torage

I'd like to know how they got this working? I have tried all the USB memory card utilities I could find (WM5torage, Card Export and nueMassStorage) and I can't get any of them to work. WM5Torage just doesn't work at all, Card Export & nueMassStorage seem to exhibit the same behaviour where they activate and Windows sees a storage card but can't access it (I think it asks if you want to format it). I have tried on 4 different Windows XP & 2003 machines and all behave the same so it is obviously the Kaiser (or the ROM).
I have MS Voice Command installed and I think I read that this might be the problem, however I gave up in the end and carry a tiny microSD-USB adapter on a keyring so I can at least get access, even if I have to take the microSD out.

I got the stock at&t 6.0 rom with the bloatware removed and lots of extra programs isntalled... Running Vista ultimate x64 edition....

It's faster than Activesync indeed, and maybe more importantly doesn't require it to be installed on the PC you want to transfer files from, but it's still MUCH slower than putting the card in a reader. The communication on the Kaiser's USB is done at USB1.1 speeds (~800kB/s max while a card in a reader usually results in 3-15MB/s depending on the card and reader).

Yes this was my findings exactly. If you can use the card reader then do because nothing comes close in terms of speed.

Usb mounting question

I tried searching, no dice. I tried asking in the tips and tricks thread, nobody answered, so I'll ask here. Is there a way to force the G1 into mass storage mode? I want to connect it to my car stereo via usb, but the radio won't detect it, so the G1 never gives me the option to mount. If I could force it into mass storage mode, I'm fairly sure it would connect. Is it a simple terminal command? All help is appreciated.
edit: sorry, misread post ><
I do this occasionally. What I found is that if I have "USB debugging" on in the phone settings the G1 doesn't detect the connection and give me the option to mount the sd card. If I turn it off, it immediately detects the connection.
I leave USB debugging off all the time. Anyone know how to force the SD card into mass storage mode like you could in RC28?
Dowload AnyCut from the market
create a new shortcut
activity
scroll down and pick SD card
the short cut should be on your desktop. I've tried this on my car stereo and couldn't get it to work. Let me know if you better luck
Yah my Pioneer FH-P8000BT hates my G1 USB no workie, just errors out after 20 seconds or so. Pioneer punted when I emailed them saying that they have no plans to update their support of devices with this head unit; bummer. At least receiving calls on it via BT works okay. Hoping with the full bluetooth stack to be released that the voicedialing app might actually revised to be worth a **** so that you can activate it via the stereo like my last phone. And also maybe contact transfer/sync might actually work for me
So close... so frustrating!
Would also love to see a solution to having the option to automount on USB connection, as per OP.

Sorry that doesn't work for you. Just for reference, the G1 recognizes and works with the usb port on the Dual XDM-6400BT just fine. The bluetooth works as well, but I assume all bluetooth capable decks will.
I have the G1 connected to my stereo but I use a converter that came with my diamond. Converts mini usb to stereo 3.5mm or 2.5mm headphone jack. That goes to the crossover which connects to the amp and I have my music without a head unit.
I stopped using the G1 and use my diamond because it comes with a equalizer which makes a noticable difference in sound between the two.

Yah, I've tried both ways; no difference unfortunately. Head unit shows "Format Read" for approx 20 seconds before giving me a "USB N/A" display and doing nothing.
Thus far I've heard of people having success with at least some Clarion and some Dual decks. I can't tell if the phone is to blame or the car stereo manufacturers... seems like obviously somebody isn't supporting the full USB Mass Storage spec properly, but hard to point the finger when the G1 works fine on my computer and the car stereo works fine with a USB thumbdrive. *shrug*

Cool. I have a Kingston 8gb class 4 but I have it partitioned to have my apps run on it. I wonder if that has anything to do with it. I'm gonna try it on a different sd card later see what happens
Thanks for the info
Just a quick update for anyone who happens upon this thread. I just upgraded to the 1.5 ION Cupcake version of Android and am happy to report that in conjunction with disabling USB debugging on the G1, my Pioneer FHP800BT / FHP8000BT is now able successfully mount my G1 as a USB device
On a semi-related note, Bluetooth stereo (basic back/next, no browsing or id3 support) and phonebook downloading also work now as well.
Now if only I could convince Google to bring back support for automatic USB mounting and bluetooth/gps toggling via Locale or some such, I'd be a *really* happy camper

USB Mode

I have a Pioneer radio in my car and wish to use it´s USB Port to charge my HD2 and also play the MP3 files.
Ok, thats not a problem.
But what about the GPS software that´s on the SD card?
I can´t run it because the card is unmounted when I plug it as a mass storage device.
Does anyone know any solution to this? Didn't like the battery backplate of the carholder accessory.
I was thinking if I could emulate an iPod with some kind of software. My radio have support for controlling ipods. That would be really nice.
Change the usb mode to activesync, that way the card wont be unmounted.

That way the radio will have no access to his mp3s.
It's impossible, if you cannot get your GPS soft into the internal memory - which could be a challenging task
