Now this is not necessarily what you may think.
I know that when you turn anything on on these phones, it uses up the battery life....believe me, i've been working in the mobile phone industry for long enough to know that!
Anyhoo, i have noticed that even if i have only used google maps for under 5 minutes, the battery life of my diamond goes all to hell, and i think that google maps is not shutting the GPS port down properly! any day where i don't use google maps the battery life is fine.
What i did to test it was this:
Charge to 100%
Open google maps and turn on GPS so that it gets a fix. let it download the map tiles and then disconnect the internet connection.
Leave it running for 5 minutes.
Close google maps and put device in standby.
Battery lasted 2 hours and 29 minutes before the device gave me the battery low message.
100% to 10% in under two and a half hours? I couldn't believe it so i tried it with tomtom, due to my suspicions of google maps not closing the port.
charge to 100%
Open TT7 and get a fix.
leave running for 5 minutes.
close TT7 and put device in standby.
2 hours and 29 minutes later (how long it took to die before) and the battery is still showing 90%.
repeated the test on both and got similar results.
Does anyone else get this problem or is it just me? It seems that Google Maps doesn't seem to shut the GPS port after it is finished using it and so my battery is totally rinsed in 2 and a half hours. yet tomtom seems to manage the port correctly.
FYI, google is set to get the GPS port automatically, and TT7 is set to internal device, so both should be going through the MS intermediate driver. ROM is 1.37.405.1 WWEshipped on the device, and radio is 1.00.25.03. I've got a french, dutch and spanish device all with 1.35 on them so i am going to test with them to see if they have the same problem, but it think google maps might have an issue with 6.1 maybe?
Which version of Google Maps have you encountered this with?
On the GM website, there is version 2.1.0.10 available for download.
In my diamond, there was v2.0.1.33 preinstalled in v1.37 WWE ROM.
I'm gonna update and check this too, it may hep to resolve my yesterday's problem with unexpected battery drain...
nothing said...
had the issue with the pre-installed version.
have updated to 2.1.0.10 and am re-testing the problem.
Here's hoping this fixes it.....
i have tried to reproduce the issue with the freshest GM, and it does not seem to occur. I even had the app exited without unchecking the "Use GPS" option. Looks like one less thing to worry about
i have no problems using google maps. make sure you have terminated the application (check your task manager) as google maps may be closed but not terminated.
oh and switch off your data connection after using google maps. =)

The problem still exists in this latest version. Is there any way to manually close the GPS port after using Google Maps? Does a soft reset close it?
soft reset should shut theGPS port, but i seem not to have the problem now with the latest version.
app was always closed properly, and checked that it was so in the task manager. GPRS was disconnected during the test as i said in the first post. anyhoo, I have re-run the tests using the latest GM version and seems is back to normal.
I did put battery status on the device during the second round of tests and was seeing around 330ma being drawn after gm was closed, but after tomtom, it was back to around 70-90.
now it is dropping back to that after closing GM as well.
very strange but certainly something to keep an eye out for. As some people still seem to have it with 2.1.0.10, it could be rom related as well maybe?

I wasn't able to locate any threads on this using Google.
For some reason (I'm using the JF Rom...) although my 3G internet connection (and WiFi) works fine... My phone STOPS syncing w/ Google services. That includes all of them, Gmail, Calendar, Contacts. For example, today it's the 26th, there is no 'Sync' icon on the top panel, however, if I go to Data Synchronization, everything is Ticked (correctly), I get the 3 sync icons (not animated) and 23th of August for Gmail, and 22nd for Calendar and Contacts.
No matter how many times I try to disable and re-enabled Ayto-Sync, or try clicking them manually, it won't help. It usually works after almost a week, but I didn't have this issue a month ago... Tried w/ WiFi (in case it's my Mobile provider...) but no luck.
I've read somewhere that a guy left his phone on the charger overnight and that helped. Does this make sense? He said that his phone 'seemed' to remain on overnight (pre-charger) and was all hot n' drained the next day. Mine doesn't do this, still operational overnight without draining; although it won't sync.
well im not sure why auto-sync isnt working but i have a theory why that guys phonw wat hot and drained, usually when your downloading things through the g1's browser( like large files) the g1 gets hot, even though he left it on the charger the g1 was consuming more power than it was able to get, causing it to get hot and drain.... well at least thats what happens to mine when im downloading files from te browser or while tethering...
Hi there,
I have a huge problem with my Diamond..
Since I went to the Alps in christmas, (local temperatures where about -8 degrees celcius(phone can handle this I hope))
whenever I make use of consuming programs (i.e.: Opera, TouchTwit, Windows Live Messenger, whatever..) My phone just turns off ? random times.. mostly after using the program for like 2 minutes.. not more than 2 mins.
Anyway, I restart my phone, it says Battery almost empty?! what the.. I just plugged it out of my recharger? if my battery gets below 5% it shuts down again and again, after few restarts it was fixed, and battery was back normal. (When phone is connected to recharger, there's no problem with any of these applications
Now my question is, since I have no warranty (Hard-spl)
What to do now?
Thanks for helping me out already
(btw: it's with every ROM I use and I have never had this issue before..)
Update: I just ordered a new battery 1340 mAh, hope this will solve it, Im running official Dutch Rom from htc website at the moment, its definitly not a rom problem, cause it shuts down also
have you found a solution yet?
i seem to have exactly the same problem...
the phone shut's down and there is always only 5% battery life remaining
i get the idea it has something to do with the internet connection, cause it always happens when i browse or use outlook
so i tried updating the radio rom, but that did not fix it
i will try it with tomtom or anything that uses a lot of memory without internet, see what happens...
i hope you have already found solution, and are willing to share it!
Edit:
It seems to have nothing to do with the memory consuming of the apps.
When i run tomtom for example, it runs fine and the phone does not shut down.
When i exit the app, and run quickgps and let it download the gps-data from the internet, the phone shut's down after a few seconds.
So maybe i do have a different problem...
Anyone have a suggestion on how to fix it? It happens with different ROMs and Radio versions.
I've been running the newest Damage rom for a few days now, and I like it, but every time I use GoogleMaps and/or navigation I can't make it stop fully. My battery report (I started and stopped the process really quickly just for test purposes) originally stated that Maps had used 4% of my battery in that time. After putting it down for around half an hour, I came back to see that the percentage had climbed to over 30%. I can only imagine what this would do to my battery life over a days use.
Is there a way for me to actually get this process to stop when I need it to? The only method I've found to this point is uninstalling the app entirely and reinstalling it when I need it. Restarting the phone also fixes the problem.
Apparently the easiest solution to this problem is Sprint Navigation. I thank Damageless for giving me the option to kill all Sprint apps that AREN'T Nav and VVM.
Autokiller works.

Hi guys,
I've had the Xperia Z, and i'm not even remotely close to getting the battery life some people on here are getting.
I'm unrooted and followed the advice on here for better battery life, but still cannot get 4 hours of on screen time.
Anyways, over the weekend, i've noticed Google Maps suddenly taking up huge amounts of battery.
I've barely been using Maps or indeed barely using any app that uses location based services.
Even over night, my battery would drain 15% and Google Maps was clearly the culprit when looking at apps using the battery.
It was even stopping stamina mode from kicking in.
I disabled GPS.
that didn't fix my problem.
I tried to Force Stop Google Maps.
that didn't fix my problem.
For example, i could charge my battery to 100% to reset my battery stats, then do nothing else but immediately watch half an hour of a film, and incredibly Google Maps would magically be the app thats drained the battery the most, like double that of the screen or triple that of media server!
So last night, i reset my phone back to factory settings, reinstalled all my apps, but i haven't applied the Google Maps update.
so far so good. so far, it is behaving itself.
has anyone else had this problem?
I don't know whether i should update Maps or not.
its weird, for the first couple of weeks, it wasn't an issue, so i don't know why it suddenly became a problem, but it was massively draining my battery, even when i had done everything to disable it!
under the reviews in google play, if i filter reviews for just reviews by users with XZ, i can only see one other person complaining of the same problem.
i couldn't find anyone else posting about this issue when i googled it.
So anyone else have this problem, or know why it is/was happening?
thanks,
It isn't the version of maps you are using that causes the issue. It is 'location settings'.
If you go into location settings in Maps, you will see that you can turn on and off things such as Location reporting, Report from this device, Enable location history etc.
Some of these are required to run Google Now to its full potential, however they cause quite a high level of partial wakelocks.
It is up to you whether you have them switched on (with some battery drain), or switched off (with no/little battery drain).
I also noticed a larger than normal battery drain since a couple of days. I can't remember if there was a gmaps update right before the drainage increase.
Just for the sake of repetition silly. This has nothing to do with the Maps version.
FYI - The last Maps update was on 12th March. Point proven therefore.

BUT like i said, i had turned all of these off, and MAPS was STILL draining my battery, despite location based services turned off, Maps forced stopped and not even using any location based app.
That is what i am querying. Why was this happening?
random quirk, or a more serious problem?
In that case I have no idea. It doesn't happen for me.
What I have noticed before once or twice however is that my location settings have changed without me doing it manually. This has happened to me twice when I have (un)installed Now.

i'm hoping its just a random quirk.
On friday, i noticed maps was using quite a bit of battery.
Saturday, Sunday and Monday however, it just went crazy.
I could lose 15% battery when my phone was asleep all due to Maps.
well, I reset my phone to factory settings 12 hours ago, and so far the problem has not repeated itself.
i've got GPS on, location based services on, and so far Maps isn't doing anything it shouldn't be doing.
I will definitely keep an eye on it and update this thread as and when.
I've had this phone 3 weeks, so i don't know why it suddenly became a problem on friday. The only thing i changed on friday was i installed new app Google Keep which almost certainly cannot be the culprit that i can see
I'm not sure what's considered high android system but mine is at 29% and looks like it's taking a toll on my battery. When I check the battery usage it's the highest thing listed. How can I lower this or fix this? Any help is greatly appreciated! I love this phone!
same problem here ... android system is at 24% with 59 minutes of CPU usage while screen was about 20% with more than 2 hours of screen on time !?! Why system is killing the cpu so much ? ... TouchWiz !!! *SMH*
Give it a week or so to even out.
This could be any app that is pulling your location. Most pull through your location through google play services, part of the android system. Not defending touchwiz usage but most likely the fault lies elsewhere.

I dont think so my location its off and still takes 29%, maybe a kernel issue. I heard they did the update we just got cause battery draining issues. maybe not fixed 100%
I get the same thing and I made sure to turn off notifications and apps that "push" and set em all to manual. I use the same apps and settings on my S5, and LG G3 and would be able to get around 6 hour screen time and total of 17-20 hours per charge. AND on those devices, the screen is usually the highest % and the android system is not even near that %
Right now I'm getting almost about the same as my S5 battery life, maybe a bit shorter...
Same problem here, about 42% on a normal usage. I did not have this problem before, on stock Rom but since I switched to cynanogenmod, my phone can't make it through the day.
What's more, I'd like to know if any of you know an xposed module or an app which can automatically turn switches on/off when starting/closing an app. Like turning GPS on when starting Google Maps and turning it back off when closing the app, for instance.

I found this was related to location services and / or google now.
I found these worked for me:
1. Turning GPS location to GPS only (i.e. not using wifi). I believe this stops passive location tracking, which in turns stops the other services always running
2. Turning off location tracking / history. As above, no detailed location, no other fancy things running all the time.
3. Turning off Google Now.
I listed the above in the order I would do it. Using just item one, you still get most of Google Now's functionality.
End of the day, what I found was there was a lot of "smart" stuff going on in the background around your location, and this is what caused most of the CPU time. If you look at your wake locks, you will see it drop off dramatically once you do the above steps.
Some people have reported turning location services back on after a while didn't result in a spike in CPU time.
This isn't a Note 4 thing, more a Android / Google Now thing in my opinion,.
Hope it helps.

thanks for the advice and suggestions, but my s4 and s5 did not have the "android system" so high in usage. i've tried the turning off gps, then back on, and then restart phone thingy, but same results. i just hope sammy would address this issue as it seem pretty widespread.

Just to clarify,Ii suggest turning location to GPS only. And leaving it off.
Turn off location reporting and history also. Then see what results you get and go from there
I'm having the same thing ...
I just received a update that is supposed to fix the battery drain issue. We shall see if it works.

Good to hear.
I found I can have GPS on without any issues, as long as either Google Now or location tracking was off.
Any more info ?
I am having the same issue in tandem with weak battery signal. Do I wait for Lollipop or do I just sell my N4 and get an S6?
