GPRS problem - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

hello all,
Right, I have gprs auto attach disabled using the advanced config tool, that works no problem. But every time I use gprs, it doesn't go off again. I have set the disconnection time to 1min, that works fine and it disconnects, but the big G still stays on, it'll only go away if I soft reset. Any idea's?
Basically it seems that after I use gprs, the auto attach seems to enable itself until I soft reset.

Anyone?
(the phone is also in GSM mode, rather than Auto too)

one of the possible solutions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=407264
What I do is:
I have configured the call end key (Long Press) to disconnect data connections.
So, whenever I am done with browsing or checking my email, I just hit the end key and hold it down for a few seconds. Drops the data connection
All the best

Configuring the end key
Start - Settings - System
click on long press end key (icon)
Select terminate data connection

If I am not mistaken - the BIG G (or H or E) remains there.
Data Exchange or Connection is active only if you see a smaller G (or E or H) on top of the network signal bars (along with the big ones on the side) and / or you see arrows moving on top of the network signal bars. (THAT would mean it's still connected).

Thanks for the reply! Yes, data connection is not active. But the big G should not be there when I have "GPRS Auto Attach" disabled. By doing this, saves at least 40% battery!
But as said, when I establish a data connection, and have finished with it. The data connection gets disconnected, as normal, but the big G remains. With "auto attach" disabled, this should not happen. If I soft reset the phone, the big G dissapears as it should.

Data connection never drops

I was away for a week and upon returning my Tilt is exhibiting some strange behavior that's different from before.
Basically, data connections never drop. So once the first ActiveSync, use of Pocket IE, etc, occurs, the connection stays on forever. For example I just checked my phone and the connection has been active for over 16 hours (the phone sat hibernated for most of that time).
I could have sworn that previously, the connection would drop after some period of inactivity. The little H with the signal strength on the title bar would change back to the triangle antenna. But no more. I tried with HSDPA off too and saw the same problem (except I got a little 3G instead of a little H above the signal bars).
I even hard-reset my Tilt and this did not fix it.
What can explain why my data connections used to drop on their own before but suddenly stopped doing so? Basically, my phone used to behave as if the "disconnect after" KaiserTweak was enabled (even though I never enabled it) but it's now behaving as if "always on" is enabled (even though it is not enabled).
So you know about Kaiser Tweak - have you loaded Kaiser Tweak and set the setting? and it still behaves this way?
I cannot explain it - but if Kaiser Tweak fixes it do you still need an explanation?

I agree with Bill... If You have a solution that will work even though you haven't had to use it before, why not fix the problem a new way instead of Dwelling on the problem.
Maybe Check this. In Phone Goto Menu -> Data Tab. Check your Check Box on Disable data connections when device enters Sleep Mode. Soft Reset and see if that will fix it for you.
Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I didn't want to fix this with the KaiserTweak because it comes with a disclaimer that (a) it might not work with all programs and (b) is might prevent simultaneous voice and data calls. The latter seems more problematic; maybe this is not an issue with 3G/HDSPA (and only with the older data technologies)?
I can't find a data tab anywhere. I have a Tilt with stock ROMs... is the menu and data tab available somewhere? I'd like to try that suggestion.

If you don't have that tab the option has been "hidden" by the ROM Makers. So Though there is a way to get to it, It is One I don't know.
I would suggest then getting Schaps Advanced Config, Is what I use to put my Data Connections to off after three minutes. I haven't had any problems with simultaneous lovin' with Voice and Data.
Well I turned on the KaiserTweak for this and it works. Maybe I had it enabled before and didn't realize.
One thing I notice is that I always get the "connecting to" balloon pop-up when a connection is being established, even if I tell it to hide. So there's one annoyance, but it's better than having my battery drain down due to the constant connection.
Interestingly this never drop behavior coincided with the switch-over from the behavior of the 3G icon that goes to H only when a connection is established, to always showing the H icon. Could these 2 behaviors be connected somehow, and due to a change on AT&T's side?
You can turn off the notification by going to settings -> sounds and notifications -> notifications tab ->event = connection established, uncheck "display message on screen".
I was just experimenting and I found that enabling the "disconnect after" KaiserTweak prevents simultaneous voice and data. If a voice call is going, I cannot establish a data connection and if a call comes in the data connection drops. If the KaiserTweak setting is not enabled, I can get simultaneous voice and data.
My phone always shows the H icon.
It seems I have to choose between the stock setting of "connection never drops, and drains battery" and the KaiserTweak setting of "can't get simultaneous voice and data connections". Ouch!
Does BandSwitch use a different way to handle forcing the disconnections, or is going to boil down to the same registry setting that KaiserTweak uses for this?

How to stop internet connection

A silly question by a new user: how is it possible to stop an internet or data connection (no matter if hsdpa, edge, gprs) once started?
Thanks
use 'long key press' in settings, can be set to disconnect a data connection (sdpa, edge, gprs)
Use this program:
http://rapidshare.com/files/173250379/GPRS...onnect.CAB.html
The connection stop after 1 minutes of inactivity

faulty url!
take this one:
GB-SOFT GPRS-UMTS_Tweak_WM6.1_Diamond
there you can choose the idle-time for disconnect
Anyway the manual stopping mode is to tap the bar that is on the top of the sceen...than tap the G E 3G or U icon and so you can tap disconnect.

Cool, also in stead of holding the end call button, wich locks the phone in my case,
Dubbelclicking the end call button alse ends my edge connection.
In order for your end key to stop the connection, you have to go to Settings>System>Long Press End Key>Select Terminate data connection
Then when you press and hold your end key, it will end the connection
if you prefer to stop internetconnection by shortcut, try VJKeyPress.exe 126
this one toggles internet connection
i've searched and i've searched and i cant find the resolve!
after retrieving hotmail, the connection stays active, meaning bars are lit up. for HOURS after unless i long-press-end key or something like that. even when i am surfing the web, after a page is fully loaded, the bars stay lit. on my old diamond, the bars used to go gray or "dormant" etc. therefore no tweaks i have found help (i.e. most operate with this rule "if the connection is dormant/inactive for xx minutes, turn off data" etc. well my connection remains ACTIVE unless i manually intervene)
what is causing this??? i only have spb mobile shell and spb phone suite installed. stock ROM.
hello? anyone? NO one is having the same issue or can help with this??? at this point i'd even be happy with a rude comment about how i should learn how to search coupled with a few links to threads which contain the answers! :\
I'm not sure I understand your question.
You're saying the connection stays alive after using mail or opera?
By default, WMo does not turn off data connection, so once you've made a data connection, it stays on.
Now, there are lots of programs out there that turns off data connection after a pre-set time. If you have Advanced Config on your Diamond, it's somewhere in there as well (I use SKTools and not Advacned Config so I can't point you exactly where, but it's there)
That said, many have tested battery drain and find that leaving the data connection ON or OFF makes absolutely no difference on the battery drain. It's only when you're transmitting data that drains more battery. Not sure if that's where you're coming from to want to turn off data connection

number16, my savior! i'll try to explain as best i can: when the data connection is started/being used, those left-right arrows appear above the signal strength, correct? what i call "active" is when those arrows are lit (presumably when data is actually being transferred). what i call "dormant" is when the arrows are still there but are gray/not lit (i.e. connection is still open, but not currently transferring data). well, up until a 2 wks ago, all seemed fine - the arrows would briefly stay lit when downloading a page, connecting to hotmail, etc, but then would go gray once the transfer was complete. now however, the arrows stay lit. sometimes for hours at a time even tho nothing is running, no data (that i know of) is being transferred, etc.
so what i was saying is that, yes, i know i can long-press-end key to shut it down, but that only works if i notice it otherwise it's just draining my battery. (most times it is in my pocket, and since it checks hotmail periodically, the data connection may open and stay on without me noticing). and yes, i know about advanced config setting (and actually, i DO have it set to turn off after a minute) BUT that only applies if "connection is not active for more than a minute". i.e. since my whole problem is that my data connection technically stays active, that advanced config setting doesnt work.
so my question is, what is keeping the connection active? why is it doing this? i am running stock ROM and only have spb mobile shell and spb phone suite loaded. and a few other minor tweaks via advanced config/regedit. i even tried spb wireless monitor to see what was active after a data transfer was complete (as far as i could tell) but it didnt really tell me anything.
does all that make sense?
thanks for any help you can provide...

Unable to start data connection!

For some strange reason Kaisertweak continues to 'reset' itself to disable my data connection.
I have made a simple video that shows I am on E connection only, 3G is off, as well as Data Connection.
I launch Kaisertweak to enable the Data (GPRS/EGDE/HSDPA/WIFI) tab. As a good measure I verify that the others are enabled as well.
The following screen shows one of the errors I am receiving - stating This programs requires a data connection, and will retry automatically. In the mean time, please check your signal strenght. (Error: wininetHttpError [0 12150]0)
As you can see on the ssame screen I am at full signal strength.
I have enable my data connection through Kaisertweak and reconnect to google maps to use a random search in order to start the data connection.

I launch Kaisertweak again and my Data (GPRS/EGDE/HSDPA/WIFI) 'tab' is back to disable. I reenable the connection by using the pulldown.
Exit Kaisertweak and do a random search using google maps.

I launch the comm manager and enable 3G.
Once 3G is enabled I try to complete the random search though google maps.

You will note that 3G does not connect during this search. As soon as it erros out with the same error as listed it connects to H.
I retry the search...

I check connectivity and although connected to H I see no active data sessions.

I did relaunch Kaisertweak again and my Data (GPRS/EGDE/HSDPA/WIFI) 'tab' is back to disable.
any ideas?
I need my data!! haha!! Please see attached!
You may need to pause the video at some parts to see what happens since the screens flash pretty fast at some parts.

Do you get the same issue if you try to launch IE?

I did do a soft reset and I was able to use my data connection for one use. Meaning after the 30seconds on nonuse it would automatically turn off as per settings in Kaisertweak.
Then I was back to the same issue as listed above.
Again soft reset, I am able to use my data connection via IE and other apps that require data, however, after the 30 seconds of nonuse the same issue occurs as listed above.
Initially I thought it was something wrong with the build. So I did reflash the phone, I did download and use a newer version of Kaisertweak.
Remove post sorry read wrong....
This is a strange one my friend. Try the ATT settings cab just for Shnitz and giggles. Also, how about you try manually disconnecting the data before Tweak has a chance, are you able to reconnect after that?
after some trial and error -
I deleted kaisertweak and associated files. Soft reset the phone. My phone is back to normal. I am able to use my data. I can manually disconnect from H and then launch IE and my data connection starts up fine. I am still unsure why Kaisertweak would default to DISABLED for data although I set it to ENABLE. I am just glad to have my data connection back without having to soft reset when I wanted to use it.
To those that have replied... thanks for your feedback.

The screen shot you displayed was for the fast sleep settings
Your data settings should look as displayed below
Sounds as if you had the "Disconnect After" set to 30 seconds

TILT/KAISER and no data plan

Hello, I have a HTC TILT running WM 6.1 that I have purchased from ebay.
Recently I have noticed the 'E' - edge icon in the top right of my phone.
I am wondering if I might be being using any 'data' while this is on because I am not paying for an unlimited data plan.
I have searched and tested several programs...
Bandswitch - supposed to allow me to change the bands im using, however I have tried all of the settings and I still get the edge icon.
KaiserTweak - I have disabled Media Net and the other options
NoData - I have disabled ATT ISP GPRS, Media Net, and My Connection
And further more I have manually deleted the settings of these three under ... start - settings - connections - advanced - select networks - edit
----
thoughts? Am I still potentially using data?
ps, off topic - I have always turned my phone 'off' while using wifi and browsing... would I be using JUST the wifi connections while connected?
my my...dude you've got to read the manual that comes with the device. if you don't have the manual, i think you can download it as a pdf.
to put it simply, windows mobile tells you about your currently in-use connections and currently available connections in the following way.
all you have to do is look at TWO icons to get a full idea of whats going on.
FIRST ICON:
in the top bar, going from left to right, you will see a BIG icon that will show one of the following:
1. big "G" (this means that GPRS is AVAILABLE on the cell tower your phone is currently connected to)
2. big "E" (this means that EDGE is AVAILABLE on the cell tower your phone is currently connected to)
3. big "H" (this means that HSDPA/3G is AVAILABLE on the cell tower your phone is currently connected to)
4. a transmitting tower kind of icon (this means that your WIFI is ON. if WIFI is CONNECTED, the transmitting tower icon will have some arrows on it)
5. two arrows pointing away from each other and occasionally spinning indicates that the device is connected to your PC via ActiveSync.
summary: this first icon tells you which data speed is AVAILABLE on your phone network OR that WIFI is on and whether or not you are connected to some WIFI access point OR the current status of the ActiveSync connection.
SECOND ICON:
immediately to the right of the first icon described above, you will see an icon showing your phone signal strength. on the top-left corner of this icon, you will see one of the following mini-icons:
1. small "Y" shaped triangular symbol (the device is simply connected to a cell tower and your phone should be able to dial out and receive calls)
2. small "G" (this means you are connected to GPRS...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
3. small "E" (this means you are connected to EDGE...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
4. small "H" (this means you are connected to HSDPA/3G...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
5. small phone receiver icon (a call is in progress)
summary: this icon exclusively shows what your device is doing with the phone network.
PUTTING THE 2 TOGETHER:
if WIFI is on and connected (you can tell by looking at the first icon) AND your data connection is available and connected (by looking at the second icon), then the device uses WIFI, to the best of my knowledge. if ActiveSync is connected AND WIFI is connected AND your data connection is connected, then the device uses the ActiveSync connection to the best of my knowledge.
its really not that difficult to understand once you grasp the concept. hope this helps.
I appreciate the help, thank you. I bought it from ebay so i just got the model and the charger.
however...
1. small "Y" shaped triangular symbol (the device is simply connected to a cell tower and your phone should be able to dial out and receive calls)
2. small "G" (this means you are connected to GPRS...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
3. small "E" (this means you are connected to EDGE...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
4. small "H" (this means you are connected to HSDPA/3G...your data connection may be in use. see summary below.)
5. small phone receiver icon (a call is in progress)
summary: this icon exclusively shows what your device is doing with the phone network.

I understand...kind of... "your data connection may be in use" ...
im just looking for a yes or no really. If im texting and just calling and i have an EDGE icon will I be billed for extra data usage?
If the E is in a big square then it's just showing network connected to, if the E is above the signal bars then your data is connected to the network... Since you say using no data i imagine first is applicable
You was already given a rundown and on that info should be able to make your own assumption since we can't see your phone....
Texts and calls don't get charged for data "unless 3G call Video", you would need to be using an application that uses data to be charged for it.

to connect to gprs/3g internet, you have to have correct settings, most importantly apn. this is what those tweaks do; they change your apn from correct for example "internet" to "internet00" so only what you really have to do is, make sure it's that way. or no settings at all. withour correct apn you won't connect. nodata works pretty reliable with doing so.

Cellular data being used instead of WIFI - ! shown with wifi icon

Can be connected to wifi, but for some reason the phone thinks the wifi connection is bad/poor, and then it will use cellular data (there will be an ! in the wifi)
This is VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY bad for me because I use a LIMITED CELLULAR DATA plan - and this phone decides on its own to not use what is really usable wifi. I have only had the phone 2 days and it is doing it repeatedly - did it at a hotel (which required username/password) but then every single time I leave the hotel and return, it connects to the wifi, but uses cellular data. If I turn off cellular data [I use Power Toggles app to make it easy], the wifi suddenly becomes acceptable to lollipop and the exclamation mark disappears from the wifi icon and I have internet access (no sign in required as the network remembers my mac id/authorized me for at least 24 hours) - and then I can toggle cellular data back on and it will stay on wifi - UNTIL I leave and return again when it starts all over again.
Similarly, at my home where I have strong wifi - sometimes it just decides not to use it. So, when I look at my phone and see the wifi with ! I have to do the same thing - disable cell data to get it to use the wifi.
This is ridiculous!
This switchover to cell data should at minimum be a user-configurable option. I do not want it doing this!

Already was disabled. (That was the option I chose when I set the phone up).
