The camera lens is bellow the cover, so you are not ruining it, just exposing it. Also the cover comes out without permanent damage, so you can always glue it back in again.
It makes a dramatic difference to picture quality - no more blurry pictures.
Here's an example picture with the lens cover off.

this is a very stupid idea..to remove the lens glass that not onlyprotects your camera lens, but also helps avoid dust accumulating inside your camera...why do this for a very miniscul improvement....not only do u void ur manufacturer one year warrenty but also any chance of getting a warrenty/insurance with att or tmobile which do give insurance on their phones(even though they dont carry the phone u could trick them into thinking its a wing...possibley then making them replace your tilt with a tytn iV or touch pro if they get it...POSSIBLEY)
seriously..just stick to the fixes like nadavis camera fix, the resoluton and shutteroff tricks and whatever else fixes people have come out with cuz they dont void your warrenty...and trust me the drivers will come sooner or later. If not from HTC it will be developed by another brilliant soul from the touch pros drivers or another new devices drivers some how or some other way...just be patient fella.
It's not really anything to do with driver of software fixes, there is a real problem with the hardware design in that interior dust and exterior smears accumulate on that little window and ruin perfectly good pictures. I'm not convinced that removing the window is the best answer, but it does at least bring a clear improvement that no amount of software tweaking ever will.
What's really needed is a bit of foam or something inside to at least keep the dust out. I might look into that.
Just take the battery cover off when you want to take a picture. Seems a lot easier to me.

Really? I always find it's really difficult to actually get that cover off, and that's probably for the best too - I wouldn't want to make it loose and rattly.

Ive tried taking the battery cover off for a while. It has the same effect, but of course:
a) you look pretty weird taking pictures with your battery cover off.
b) it takes some time to do, meaning you cant take spontaneous pictures.
c) I feel the battery may fall out when doing doing this.
I think it may be a good idea to put a small foam ring around the hole to keep dust out, but so far its not been a gigantic issue. Remember the dust cant possibly get under the screen, as its a separate assembly to the base where the camera is, so a bit of dust is not necessarily a big deal.

Clean the cover
Why not just clean the cover? I got some Meguiar's PlastX clear plastic cleaner and spent 5 minutes cleaning the cover. I then wiped the cover down with a lens cleaning wipe. The whole process took about 7 minutes. I took a picture with the cover off (the whole back cover) and with the cover on after cleaning. They look exactly the same.

I don't know if SE can't fix it in guarantee.
My pictures quality is affect, juste see the pictures :
2 exemple before :
2 exemple after :
My pictures are fuzzy and too "grey".
I have send a e-mail toi SE, no answer.
I call in this week...
If you have the same probleme, and if the quality is affect... Thanks
So I'm sure now that's impossible to take again this type of pictures... :
Pardon me but I don't see any problem with the "after" pictures.
Half of my coating was off just after 4 days (or less, I noticed it only on the forth day), so I did not get a chance to take "before" shots.
Still, do you remember doing anything to your phone to cause it to be like it. Was it always like this?
i have your same problem, also i take much care on it!
sry i m italian..
What do you use to clean your phone? Or do you not clean it at all?
My lens is also so...But i must say i dont know how it get so...Maybe it come so in purchase...Very bad lens i must say...

Got exactly the same problem. It has annoyed me for a long time and makes my camera useless. I have been thinking of sending the phone in, but I dont like to be without my phone for several weeks, besides, how many days will it tike before the problem reappears? unless they are aware of the problem, and have a fix for it. And as everybody else, I take very good care of the phone

i noticed the same thing yesterday on my xperia,
however i believed its sort of moisture left behind the lens, after my little son pee on my x1,i rubbed it instantly, just after that i realised camera was not upto the mark,i still strongly believe its the reason,
else u notice one thing,
only the circle has those scratch like look, and not that whole hexagon shape, only the cirle
so if it scrathed why doesnt the rest..!
hopefully its just moisture and goes away with time,..
...i have the same problem too...
picture in daylight have a kind of "dreamy filter"!!!
By nigth have no big problem!
...sorry double post
lol dreamy fliter
it is actually moisture,i'm 99% sure atm,
it must have gone like that, when we cleaned lens with some fluids,
for me as i said my 4 month son pee on it
as my camera view & shots are much better now, however not as it was yet,
i gave it direct sunlight for 2-3mins 5-6 times in patches and kept rubbing it with soft cotton to give it some warmth,
i assume in 2-3 days it will be all better
To me it looks like it is some kind of filter that is getting worn down. My lense has become less resistant to direct light giving the picture an halo/dreamy look with lots of lens flares

He pee'd on your x1
Haha
U know what? i had mine for about 2 or 3 months now, and im very watchful of it. I notice my lens is starting to have those little marks too. Before it gets worse, i quickly bought a screen guard and just put it over the lens.
Problem solved
My lens instead has a sort of scratch... But I can't imagine I'm responsible for that, I took good care of my X1... Anyone has this problem too? Fortunately I can't make it out on pictures (yet).
But the those scratches are inside, not outside...for me is a construction problem of the lens! I don't like so much that false "dreamy filter" but, now i have and i have no money to change...hurra!!!!!
I've got the same kind of "foggy scratches" on the lens. The pictures seems to be out of focus and like using a soft filter. I compare the pictures taken in the beginnig and there is a big difference...
Hello, I´ve "had" the same problem. ( Im German, sorry about my english ).
As is noticed that Problem, I send my X1 back to Sony to repair. Then i got it back and the lens was okay.
Then after 2 Weeks i´ve got the same Problem again. I made Pictures from the lens, an pictures with the X1.
BUT : i have rub with the fingernail over the lens very hard. And wow : the lens is now 99% clear again. I don´t know where the dirt came from, and what it was ..... but now it´s gone....confused case.....
Here my pictures :
--------------------
Got exactly the same problem as in the first post and picture. I like to ride my bike and yeah I swet a lot during that LOL And I noticed recently that the pictures are "foggy". So I asked in our repair centre and they said it's actualy my problem. The same will hapen to your ordinary camera lens, if it comes to contact with sweat or saltwater. Also fingerprints are chemicaly agressive. If you leave it like this for a week or so, it'll gets more difficult to remove.
How did I fix this:
Basicaly, there are two ways. One is to get smooth finger file. Really smooth one. But if you don't take enough smooth one, you'll damage the lens.
So the other way is to take a tissue or old t-shirt and just clean the lens for few minutes. I tried and after 15 minutes it was gone and pictures are same as before - crappy but not foggy LOL
It's because the lens has same special layer as on digicams. Try to touch the digicam lens, leave it like that for a week or so, and you'll see
edit: it has nothing to do with scratches on your lens. I do have scratches as well, but it'll look different in the picture. The problem described here is simply what I wrote above - sweat and/or fingerprints
Okay, so I finally did it. This evening after work I took my phone (Att Tilt), some torx drivers, some tiny philips and sat down at my desk. With a beer in hand, my phone in pieces, and the front camera from a kaiser on the desk in front of me, I made awesome happen.
Now, the fact that I was three or four beers deep by the time I finished probably contributed to the hairline crack in my case near the new camera, but that's nothing some superglue won't fix. At any rate, my Att Tilt now has a front camera, and it was auto recognized by the camera software. Needless to say, this is awesome - the next step is to flash a rom that supports all the nifty things I can do with a front facing camera, and make the most of what I now have.
Here's where I get confused, though - all my poking about on the forum and elsewhere seemed to say that this wasn't possible - that the tilt /could not/ be modified to have a front camera. Was I misreading things that badly?
If it helps, I've got some very blurry pictures (my camera's a piece of junk), and might take some more if people want.
Love to hear back.
Nice work Harrson...BTW, a few questions...
Do you have to dismantle the whole phone or can you do it just by removing the torx screws behind the sliding screen?
And is the front camera of the tilt modular? cause i hawked a camera off an old treo 650 and I know it's angled diferrently from the tilt as to the wire but do you just pop it on the front camera module? thanks

I was not able to find a method of removing the front cover by itself, and had to go through the entire disassembly (just about) as detailed at Mike Channon's website, removing all those damned tiny screws and bending distressingly thin pieces of plastic to get to the front case.
The front camera is modular, yes - it's a tiny little thing comprised of a small camera(about the size of a pea or so) mounted on a flat flexible cable kind of thing, which terminates in one of those miniature plugs that you find elsewhere inside the phone. The socket lives under the front cover, right next to the power/wifi/bluetooth LEDs near the earpiece.
On my Tilt, the cavity that was intended to hold the camera had been filled by a cube of black foam rubber that had been glued to the board (which you can kind of see in my crappy picture). I removed that, plugged in the camera, and reassembled.
(I apologize for the atrocious pictures - as I said, the camera's a piece of junk)

As to using the camera from another HTC phone, I called HTC about using the one from the TYTN 1 (which I'd bought off of ebay without knowing any better), and I was told that the part numbers were different. Now, I have no idea whether or not the parts are technically compatible (but geometrically different), or if they're just no good for each other (like alcohol and me).
Sweet!
That's pretty sweet! What are you using the front camera for?

Um... Not much, actually. Not yet, anyway.
See, the next step in my plan was to flash my rom to something with a 3g dialer and something a damn sight quicker than the stock rom - I've been eyeing the latest stable Phoenix release for a while now, but I admit that I've been hesitant for fear of bricking my phone.
Really, I've just been showing it off, and hoping that someone who sees it will ask "Oh, cool! Are you using it with application X?" and inadvertently give me a good idea, and then I can say "Application X? That's old news - I haven't used application X in, like, months!" And then I'll go download application X immediately.
In truth, I haven't been able to find all that much in the way of video chat for Windows Mobile, whether over wifi or 3g.
Anyone heard of anything good?
Ignore this post - deleted duplicate of above.
Why buy a slim, light phone, and slap a giant case on it? For that matter why did htc make the camera bezel stick out past the back of the case, so it gets damaged when you lay it down?

As a zero dollar remedy, I pealed a foot off my keyboard, restuck it under the camera bezel and viola! This one has been on my phone for two months now, and the last one lasted about six months. It keeps my camera off the table when I lay it down, and even prevents some glare from the overhead lighting. No damage to the case or camera, and no added bulk.
Htc inc redibly re-engineered

Dig it... Had I not already popped for my feather, I probably would have gone this route myself. Just can't stand putting such a svelte device into a behemoth case. For that matter, I feel the same way about screen protectors. /end rant

Shameless self bump.
I thought this was about the actual phone bezel when I read the title, cool idea though. I've always hated cases since most of the time they're bulky and ugly. I bought the phone I have because I liked the way it looked, why would I want to wrap it in something that hides all of that? I usually just take great care of my phone until it gets its first decent size scratch then I just say the hell with it and care about protecting it less. That's why I loved my OG Droid, I could beat the hell out of it and it would still look fine!.
I agree. The OG droid was a beast. This "mod" also fixes the wobble you get if you try to use the phone flat on a table.
Amazing hack.
If anyone else was interested in doing this and was looking for something less.... drastic... these clear feet would be perfect! (10 cents)
http://www.westfloridacomponents.co...+Rubber+Feet+Small+Bumpers+9.5mm+X+3.2mm.html
My bezel still looks brand new and I "carelessly" put it bezel down wherever I go. Now if some people put it onto the street asphalt then you're just.... yea.
And with your analogy why hunk another piece onto the back of it?
My bezel still looks good too, but I would cringe every time I heard it hit the desk. It is such a cool looking part of the phone, I'd hate to scratch it up.
This is clearly not for everyone. It did help me out, and I thought I'd share it in case it might help anyone else.
I think it is actually smart for manufacturers to let the camera protrude slightly from the back of the phone. Cameras have a minimum thickness that can't be avoided, but by keep the rest of the phone slightly slimmer (or as slim as possible), users can add a case without significantly changing the overall thickness of the phone.
If the camera were flush with the back of the phone, the entire phone would need to be thicker to allow it (of course, they could squeeze in a bigger battery).
The devil's advocate argument is that that manufacturers want phones that feel as thin as possible in your hand, even if they have to make parts of the device thicker for the camera (resulting in phones shaped like the Droid X).
Amen to that. I love my 8 megapixels.

Just stick it and remove it... as scotch isn't very strong tape, it only removes the fat and leaves the transparent plastic in perfect clean state!
use it on all surfaces, try out on the screen first, you'll see how it works!
That's the old trick with our optimus There are threads mentioning this, some people got better results some don't see any difference

yes, when I want good pictures I remove the back cover, but I would like to buy another back cover and remove that piece of plastic just in case I want to protect it again with the original one.

Yes, old discussion
With the plastic cover of the sensor (why LG did it??) we have to take care (clean) of:
1) external side of the plastic
2) internal side of plastic
3) external side of sensor
P.S. plus... scratches/abrasion in the transparent plastic cover (internal and external..).
Doing this, there are no doubts: the qualty improvement is a fact.

Made one with illustration board. I tried using the magnifying glass lens I have laying around (I conveniently have 2) but it doesn't get the job done. Everything looks blurred until I move the phone 4 inch farther... so that's why it is required to have lens with 40-45mm focal length (regardless of diameter, I think)
I'll be making another one out of vinyl tiles while I'm looking for the proper lenses here in my area.

depends on the app. Do a search for Google Cardboard. Its still a very young market, so apps are limited. I have one app that's for watching videos, but the rest are pretty much demos of 3d experiences (google earth, roller coaster, street view). The apps split the screen into two and the headset allows each eye to get one view
But the first time people use it..... A long ....woooooowwwwww....

Hi, the magnetometer is near IR blaster, so I have to lock my phone in the glass as high as possible to make the magnet stick work
Thank you, it work, but very shaky. May be we can change magnet to more powerful (from hard drive, e.g.)? Or can use voice, or headeset button?
In my case, I use 2 ferrite magnets and hold the phone like I do above. I think you can modify the glass with a lower magnet slider
I tried a bigger neodymium magnet (20mm diameter, 5mm thick) and it didn't work.
Voice or headset button: depends on your apps
