Question for Tom Tom 7 users - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Themes and Apps

I've installed TT7 on my Tilt and the install went fine. I've even downloaded the one free city (Miami) map. However, when I start up the software all I ever get is the waiting for a valid gps signal. I've run the quickgps to get the latest updates. Are there any other settings that I need to look at? I've read something about gpstest and gpsrouter but really don't know much about those. Am I missing something or have I done something wrong?

Update: Well I drove around for about an hour after work and it finally kicked in and started working. But, looks like I have a Map issue. I live about a mile from the ocean and Tom Tom is working cuz i see my position and the ocean is nearby. But, the area where I am is just one big green mass. I didn't see my address/street when I went to set that up either.

1) Running GPStest and minimizing it makes it get a fix sooner.
2) You are not on the map you have. Tomtom doesn't have a very large map area compared to where you want to be, apparently.

Even after downloading the latest maps for your city, some places are still not available. With TT7, I believe you can edit or download map edits and such from other users. I'm not sure whether this is only with POI's or with 'blank areas' as well.
Btw, I don't think that it would show your address when you're are home. Even after you've entered the address, it would probably show that you're somewhere very near.

had the same thing happen to me. I selected to download the free Houston, Tx map, unfortunatly I live outside of downtown, and I am in a green blob as well. If you buy a full map of your state, or find if your in a subcity (smaller city just outside) then you need to try to find the right map.

Anyone know where I can get a cab file of GPSTest?

use a search engine like google!
http://www.google.de/search?hl=de&q=GPSTest&btnG=Google-Suche&meta=
http://classic.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=24687&associateid=9
another test tool: VisualGPSce

its best to run the test when u are outside (duhh lol found out the hard way lol, lacked common sense) i first installed the Wilmington DE map and then from my acutally GPS tomtom i copied the US and Canada Map over to my phone and ran another application to make it compatible to TT7 and now the GPS works better

Thanks for the files. Any suggestions on where to find some good maps? I drove into work this morning and the Tom Tom failed to get a connection. Has anyone else experienced and or solved this lengthy connection time issues?

Maybe I should start a new thread for this but as the title of this thread is non-specific I thought I'd post here rather than creating a new one. I installed TT7 on my kaiser yesterday after running TT6 for several months. I read that TT7 was compatible with both TT6 and TT7 maps, however when I loaded up TT7 and tried to access my existing map of Western Europe it did not appear in the list of available maps. Is there a solution for this problem or does anyone know where I can get a "trial" version of Western Europe map for TT7?

TT6 maps are NOT compatible with TT7. Also, there is no trail for WE - you have to buy it (£49.95) from TomTom and follow the instructions in respect of hacking TTH2.3 with the tweaked jar file, downloading the map you bought to your pc, manually transferring it (and the activation file) to your SD card and voila.
I did this very thing last night and it runs a treat!

what GPS software do you use?

Is it just me, or does "google maps" and WLS maps blow tomtom and iguidance out of the water.. imo, google maps has the best feel of all four apps and the satallite view is good.. Iguidance is even better with the street names overlaid onto the satallite view...
Tomtom is the worst of the four, with a clunky interface and iguidance's interface is not as quick as google or WLS.

It follows me....
do you mean "follow you" as in the map scrolling automatically as you travel? if so, it does do that...
you might have a different version than me or a lot of other people have then. Ours doesnt follow us. it shows a blue blinking dot where you are at that dot moves, but the map doesnt, so soon your location is off the map. Also, if you are in an area with no cell, your maps wont work. IG/TT/etc will continue to work with no problems.
I have google maps, microsoft live search, and Tomtom 6 installed on my 8925 and although I love the features of live and google, I think tomtom is the preferred option to navigate to a specific location, because it navigates with voice and on screen info for the next turn. Google and Live will show you where you are and give you a route to follow, but without voice prompts both are a little dangerous to use while driving.
Here's a quick breakdown for you.
Google - has sat pics. is free. is from google! POIs are searchable via googles site. Problems. No voice. No T2S. Limited to 2d view
MS - same
TT - No T2S. Less accurate maps. More accurate pathing. Smoother FPS. Clunky or best interface depending on who you talk to. Sat maps and T2S rumored to be coming in the next billion years. has 2d and 3d.
IG - Has voice. has T2S. Has what in the U.S. is considered the most accurate mapping. Has commonly used features set to minimum buttons. Has the most 2d and 3d views. decent interface. slightly outdated graphics. Known comm problem with kaiser.
Which navigation software does travel with you when you want directions? I have google maps and it does not travel with you during directions.
I'm using Telenav and it seems to work well. It has not been fully integrated with PPC Outlook yet. Can't navigate to ppc contacts saved address. You must renter your contacts address in Telenav to navigate. You can however import your desktop Outlook contacts to an online service on their website. My favorite feature of Telenav is the ability to call a toll free number, speak your destination and after hanging up your destination is imported into Telenav and it automatically begins to speak you directions and check traffic.
I think Telenav is good but $10 a month or $100 a year is ridiculous. I am using the 30 day trial until my Garmin XT micro sd card comes.
I using iGO Plus
i use i guidance as well, it's very accurate and easy to use...what is the known comm problem with the kaiser, i have an ATT Tilt and i haven't ran into any issues...i hate that google or live has to connected to the internet all the time...
and i haven't tried tomtom but the fact that it doesn't come with US maps (at least the free version posted around these forums) and it doesn't do T2S made not even bother trying it...

I have the tilt as well. Most people with the tilt or tytnii are having IG wait 1-5 minutes before it loads up if you dont shut down comm mgr first. IG says that they probably wont fix this.

How to start?
Hi guys,
I am a newbie and havent been able to get the GPS function to work yet.
I got the handset from Orange, flashed it with the HTC ROM found on this forum, downloaded googlemap and ran the QuickGPS. Googlemap hasnt been able to detect where I am yet.
Any advice would be great.
I use iGO myway. It's by far the best i've used. and I've used them all. LONG LIVE PPCW
Wayfinder
I'm using Wayfinder 6 on my TyTN II. I use Wayfinder since 4 years now. Easy to use, fast enough and powerful!
Try this.....

I would suggest hard resetting you Tytn. You might have fooled with the external gps settings and I think it's been noted here that if you even look at the settings the internal gps gets hosed. I was having the same problem until I did a hard reset. I'm all good now.

VisualGPSce - Free, gives great information such as satellite signal strength in a bar chart, satellite azimuth & elevation, panel with dial to show your current horizontal and vertical speed - heading - elevation. Great for many things including ensuring the GPS is working.
Earthcomber - Free software and Free maps, tracking location finding your way around is a breeze with this software. The vector graphics type maps make it very compact. I fit all of California with barely a dent in my 2G card. More services available for a fee as well. Directions require a connection, either cell or wifi.
Google Maps - Free software and Free maps, but requires connection either cell or wifi. Got to love those satellite views!
I use all three without any problems.
i'm using garmin mobile xt
that application have a good 3D
and many maps for that application
TomTom for teh win!

Great info! thanks
iGuidance 3.0. It's much better than the new 4.0 because 4.0 got rid of the map-generation software, so you have to copy a total of nearly 2GB to your device, instead of just what you need.
Great software with accurate maps and voice directions.

I feel like this topic was asked many times already and should be moved to Kaiser category forum, but I'll answer anyways. TOMTOM. Very simple and works great.

I thought I-Go was for Europe only. Do you have a link to any info. for a North America version?
I've been testing a lot of programmes on Kaiser:
- TomTom 6.032
- Navigon 6.2
- Garmin Mobile XT
- Copilot Live 6
- Automapa 4.1.2
TomTom:
Seems to be an automatic choice for many. It is good as always, but I noticed a few glitches comparing to its operation on Hermes with BT GPS SirfStar III receiver. Namely, it runs fine and suddenly it freezes. After some 3 kilometres it starts operating again. It also goes crazy on roundabouts. If you know the area it's ok, but imagine driving on a motorway in a foreign country. Wrong exit on estacade and you face 50km+ of extra road.
Navigon:
On Hermes with Schaps ROM it wasn't even usable, runs a few seconds and then freezes for a couple of minutes in menu! I didn't get to checking the navigation aspect. On Kaiser it seems to run more smoothly than TomTom, however it takes about 30-40 seconds to start. Some post codes in the UK are missing and when typing in the postcode you don't see the street name as in TT and when you decide to navigate there you cannot add a number.
For me it's the best looking navigation software on the market at the moment with nicely rendered POI Icons. If you drive by BP, Texaco etc. you can see the proper icon with symbol of the petrol station. The same with car dealers. At the moment for me personally is the default software. Routes are very similar to those from Garmin.
Garmin Mobile XT:
Not as smooth as Navigon, about the same as TomTom, however I noticed that it seems as if it tried to catch up the actual position for most of the time. Sometimes when you have to turn left and almost immediately right, you do it, but it still shows your position before. And that sucks. However it's got a brilliant feature no other software has. Namely, Mapsource. You install software with maps on your PC. Then let's say you drive from London to Rimini in Italy. You don't need all Europe countries (as usually in Western Europe packs from other companies). You can ask the program to find a route (just as on the ppc) and then choose just those pieces of map that run along the route. They are not square, the maps are divided in some puzzle like pieces.
Copilot Live 6:
Software provided with Kaisers from e.g. T-Mobile UK. You can choose 1 region like UK and Ireland or the Alps for free. It works fine. Free camera updates. It runs pretty ok, but it looks so uncool. Graphics is no match for TT or Navigon. However it can really satisfy the needs of an average user.
Automapa:
Polish software available in two packs. Only Poland and Western/Central Europe. It seems to be the fastest of them all. Graphics is good. In Poland you don't have just numbers, if it's a housing estate or an area with blocks of flats you can see separate blocks with numbers on them. The small problem is that you cannot find addresses using post codes in the UK.

Was using Tomtom 6
Just switched to iGO and happy with it.
Waiting for iGO 2008 to be released.
Garmin XT. Mans brand GPS.
Tom Tom not for men.
I would be using Garmins XT if only they packaged it so I can use it on my SD card rather than theirs (yes, I am aware of the workarounds for this). Preference for Garmin is because I already own many Garmin devices and maps. I went to Newark last week and, rather than take one of my Garmins, I decided to give Nav4All a try. The interface is somewhat confusing until you get the hang of it but it did a respectable job of getting me around town. I will probably continue to use it when navigating at a flown-to destination and use my Garmins in my own vehicles.

TomTom6 - how to turn on GPS

I've searched the forums and bnot found the answer to this question.
I've installed TT6 on my diamond, and it works fine, however, in order for it to get a GPS signal, I had to run google maps, and then in the menu click the turn on GPS. Presumably to turn off the GPS I'll have to go into google maps again and turn off the GPS. Is there some way of turning the GPS receiver on and off without having to go into google maps?
Thanks
Hope you don't mind me asking but how did you get GPS to work with Google maps?
When I try i get the following error;
"This programme require a data connection. Please contact your carrier or visit www.google.co.uk/gmm/configure.html on your computer for more info.
(Error: connectError [183])
With Quit or Retry the only options.
Sorry
@mcvpjd3: Believe me, you do NOT want that thing running all the time because if you do, your battery will be dead in under 2 and a half hours!!
Google maps should turn the GPS reciever on and off automatically when it is needed, as should TomTom or any other GPS program.
When nothing is talking to the GPS reciever, it goes into powersave and turns off.
Google maps has the option to use it with or without GPS and so you have the option to turn it on and off, but it should be turned off automatcially when you close the program.
@so3:does the message "This programme requires a data connection" not give you a clue?
You need a data connection for google maps to work. Just like google maps and google earth on the PC, it downloads the map and satellite images from google over the internet. If you haven't got a data connection, then it won't even start up. Sorry for the sarcasm, but that message is really self explanatory and it really does tell you what the problem is. of course, if there is more info that you have not given that would help us figure it out a bit more, i apologise and please feel free to elaborate.

How did you get TomTom Navigator 7 to work with your TomTom 6 maps, or are you just restricted to the single city trial that comes with it?
I found no mention on the TomTom site on version 7 and I have no way to buy maps or switch to another map within the software.
My TomTom home on my PC recognises it as a tomtom device and lets me load my Western Europe maps onto it, but I don't have the option to switch to the maps from within the software? Instead I have a button that has Voucher written on it that takes me to some HTC website???
just restricted to the single city map as far as i know. I don't think 7 likes the version 6 maps, but if you have any version 7 maps, they should work fine.
As for TT6, I did get that working on the diamond, but i had to set 'other NMEA' as the device type, 9600 as the baud rate and then com 4 as the com port.
Then seemed to work on and off, but got much better when i turned aGPS off using schaps advanced config.
TT7 just picked up the internal GPS chip staright away, and this thing is SOOOOO much faster than my Athena to get a signal it is unbelievebale!

You can't use the V7 maps within tt6. You can buy the v7 maps thru the tomtom store but then you need tomtom 7 wich isn't official released yet. If you have tt7 you can use the old v6 maps.

Hmm... Well I have a licensed version of tt6 with licensed tt6 maps (v6.6) but I can tell you for sure that these v6.6 maps don't work with tt7.
With tt7 installed, my tomtom home recognises the tomtom device and lets me copy the maps to it, but they don't appear as an option under manage maps in tt7. The only option I have is the map I downloaded from HTC or a button that says 'voucher' which takes me to the same download page on the HTC website. It also doesn't recognise 6.75 maps so unless someone is doing something dodgy to get the maps to work, I can't see how it will work with them.
I managed to get tt6 working on my diamond now though, so I'm happy for the moment. I don't think the extra features of tt7 are worth it but maybe I'll get an upgrade if they offer one when it's officially released.

I had TR home installed on my PC - V1.5 (with TT app version as 6.010 and maps. I updated to version the latest version of the maps for version 6 and then install the Cab of 7 on my device over-writing the 6 app.
All works well.

Tomtom home 2.5 makes Diamond legit.

Downloading TomTom Home 2.5 and connecting Orange (and maybe all variety) Diamond causes TOMTOM to offer a free trial of TOMTOM 7.9 with trial map and access to purchase others advancing the cause of those whose Diamonds did not have TOMTOM in ROM. Win for Diamond users. Win for TOMTOM map sales.
Sounds like very good news and TT actually applying some common sense for a change.
Does Home 2.5 work with Navigator? Previous versions did not and us PDA users were forced to use Version 1.5. It is for that reason that I did not instal it when it came out.
I have a legitimate version of TT6 up and running on my TD. Does this instal wipe any previous versions of TT off, or can both run together?
Can this version read version 6 maps - I would probably buy a Europe map but have a Southern Africa map I would want to keep in case I ever visit there again.
Maybe it's just because I live in Canada, but the only map I can download is the one free map. If I try to purchase a map via TomTom Home it shows none available. Kind of annoying since TomTom is pretty much useless if you can't buy maps. It does work for all the free voices and car images, etc though. Maybe I should have selected the UK as my country when I registered....
Tomtom Hone 2.5 encourages a connected diamond user to download working version of Tomtom 7 (v 7.90)for HTC devices which replaces extracted files from Diamonds with v7 in ROM. This allowed my access to previously purchased maps (v7.45maps) which wouldn't load with previous extracted versions of Tomtom 7. Home 2.5 has version for Navigator. Purchasing from Tomtom website for Navigator 7 leads to discounted 8.15 maps. Would assume these will work. My Orange diamond worked with maps of W Europe designated for O2.
The 6.75 maps will work with TomTom 7, I'm using them together just fine.
I'm using Tomtom V8 maps with Tomtom 7 no problem.
Worked for me. But does anyone know if this is a trial software, or the full version? I wouldn't want to spend $80 on a map of Australia, if the software runs out in a couple of weeks...
TomTom itself (the program) is free, its the maps you pay for, therefore it is a full version and will not run out.
Definitely full version. Can set to have cows mooing if speed limit exceeded. Tomtom will probably advise if v 8.15 maps operate if other site users cannot say. Cannot see why not as I am sure tomtom want map sales otherwise copilot will take htc users on. Home slightly slow to catch on to what you want . You may have to purchase maps from tomtom website and use Home to transfer to diamond rather than purchasing through Home itself.
I emailed TT "support" some questions about this and here is part of their reply
"Home is offering you this application in error. It is an update to the preinstalled version of Nav 7, so probably won't work."
So there you go - all of this is a figment of your imagination. It doesn't exist and if it did it wouldn't work anyway. And it is all your fault for wanting up to date software and maps from us.
Oh and by the way they also said that TTN6 is not compatible with my TD even if it works on it. I must get a copy of their dictionary to see what there definition of compatible is.
I am so glad that Tom Tom is back to its normal ways - I don't think I could have stood the shock of them becoming helpful.
Not complaining. Best example of unsolicited goods I've had in a long time. Is it tomtom's reluctance to preload in all markets or mobile companies wanting you to use their navigation system with costly data downloads?

Need Help: Garmin XT on Raphael showing basic maps...

I need some help or guidance. I installed Garmin XT 5.0 on my HTC Fuze and having issues. When I had it on my tilt it would show me full detail maps including all the streets. After I installed the Garmin XT on my Fuze it only shows me what looks like the basic maps. All I can see are highways and major roads, no streets. I have already told it to show the most detail as well as all areas. Any ideas? I followed the instructions to the tee, in fact I installed the software two times just to make sure I didn't make a mistake anywhere the first time. Let me know what you guys think!
Roman
You have to own and install maps as well, the software by default only includes the base map that you are seeing. Since you say you had them on your Tilt, you should probably try to track down where you put them, or reinstall them to your PC from the CD/DVD so that you can select the detail maps you want on your Fuze.
Heres the problem, the fuze sees the base map when I go to "MAP SETS" but for some reason does not want to display it. All I see is the base map

That sounds more like a comprehension problem than a problem with the program...
If what you're trying to say is that there is MORE than just the base map listed in "map sets" but you only see the base map displayed, I'd guess that the maps aren't unlocked for your device properly.
Oh whoops. Yeah when I go to mapsets it sees the north american 2009 maps and the base map but only displays the base maps. Ill try to play with it. Thanks!
What kind of Garmin Mobile XT do you own? Is it locked to an SD card, or to a Bluetooth GPS?
