I'm getting ready to head to Ireland for a week. My current radio is 1.65.20.29 (Rom at the moment in L26, but it changes fairly frequently). Any advice for radio/rom combos which might be appropriate for long battery life while in Ireland (quickgps fix etc. not so important)? I will
likely have access to WiFi and be trying to avoid 3g data charges by turning on GSM mode.
(ATT customer, by the way, but likely to be roaming onto Vodafone in Ireland).
The operators and mobile network in Ireland is effectively the same as in the UK. Your current radio will work fine in Ireland. As of yet I have had no issues with any of the radios I used in Ireland. Currently I am using the new 1.71.09.01 emo radio and it seams to be very good in Ireland north and south.

Thanks for the information. I looked at the emo thread (who doesn't want the latest toy?) but the battery consumption reports seemed like it wouldn't be optimal for this trip, since I want to keep to charge every second day or os.
Thanks again!

1.) Put all the ROM / RAdio's you want to try on your MicroSD Card
2.) Flash to your hearts content via MicroSD.

Since the match-rom-to-spl convention came about, I've been doing that a lot less (since I switch between 3.29 SPL and 3.56 SPL for different roms), but I might load a couple that match the same SPL.
Good idea, thanks.

Hi,
i have just bought an O2 Stellar (unlocked) from ebay. Until now i have always got my phones direct form the network so a used phone is a first for me. My current device is a Tytn (TM Vario II)
What do i need to do when it arrives in order to get it working with my Tmobile SIM?
I intend on trying some new roms on it after xmas, are there any that favour gps performance? i am hoping to do a bit of geocaching.

Welcome to xda-dev. The first thing you should do as a new person here is to read the wiki for Kaisers (which includes the XDA Stellar, O2s variant), also the sticky posts here. There's lots of info there that'll be helpful. I've never owned a Stellar, just the generic HTC version but I would imagine unless it's already been unlocked by the previous owner, it'll be sim locked to O2 so you may need to unlock it. The simple way to see if this is the case is to try your T-Mobile sim in it. I think it'll depend where you reside as to whether other changes will be required because not all T-Mobile network characteristics are the same and some locations have specialist/uncommon settings.
As far as ROMs with good GPS performance go, the current UK World Wide English Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM has very poor GPS performance here in the UK compared to the original Windows Mobile 6.0 ROM and that seems to be fairly common with many of the WM 6.1 ROMs although different radios teld to make a difference according to reports here. Again it'll depend where you reside.
hi,
the device had better be unlocked.. it is advertised as so! It is claimed it is only 6 months old and came unlocked from the network. I guess being only six months old it will have a 6.1 rom already on it so i'll see how i get on wth that first then think about putting the older rom on it.
i am in UK, East Lothian to be a little more precice.
hi,
i am really struggling to get my phone to work for internet settings for t-mobile.
can anyone tell me the password for tmobile internet or is it user specific?
I just found this FANTASTIC thread :

Hi all,
Ive seen a few threads opened up but redirected to the radio thread with no answer.
Im pretty technical and have gone through a few phones. Ive got a Kaiser now and im in Australia on Telstra.
The threads that i have seen detail how if you are Telstra customer and are on a newer radio people you are talking to get your voice FADING in and FADING out
Can you assist?
Cheers
Anthony
bump - what no one has come across any fade issues?
Nah, none of us are daft enough to use telstra
Seriously though - I'm with three, never heard of this issue with the tytn. Theres a 1.70 radio available at HTC HongKong e-Club or through the Kaiser ROM thread, its easy to flash/upgrade - just connect your cable & run the exe. Maybe that'll help ?

I take it that means your flashing to the ROM I referred you to (detailed in your post on the ultimate radio thread at 11.38 yesterday) means the WWE Hong Kong ROM/Radio/SPL upgrade both I and snachez referred to has made no difference? If you've not been able to flash that ROM yet, give it a try first and let us know how you get on.
Update :
Flashed to HK SEA Radio 1.70.19.09
Certainly better than 1.71.xx.xx but still not 100%
Hmmm - i dont think im going to get much traction out of the new polaris roms but ill give it a shot and report back

Did you try the accompanying HK WWE ROM and HTC SPL 3.34 (the complete package) as well? If you have and you're still having probs then given that this combination has been found to work OK with at least one other Aussie network (from reports here at xda-dev), it's time to complain to Telstra and see what they have to say.

No i havent tried the complete package.
The problem is Telstra is unique with their nextG UMTS 850 network and as they didnt bring in the Kaiser to Australia they would laugh at you if you asked any questions (trust me i have some inside knowledge )
Its back to trying different roms.
i am in Au with telstra gsm (not 3g though) and have used multiple roms/radios with no issues with calls.

So given all the other feedback, will the complete SEA WWE ROM package be the first? Maybe someone with the ROM can verify whether the Connection Wizard lists Telstra as an option under Australias network options...
Hmmm if it comes to dire straits ill load the entire rom as suggested but the history of this phone and my gut tells me the problem is specific to the Radio ROM.
What ive learnt
This is only a Telstra NextG issue (not seen on optus/voda/3).
Specific to the 850UMTS band
Niki and Emo Radios similar results.
Im currently testing the new polaris Radio 1.59.44.02 and so far with better results. Its only been a day so far so ill post back ... again!
Telstra Kaiser owners feel free to bump this...
I don't have a Kaiser but a Polaris with Telstra and that runs fine @ 850 mhz with Polaris radio 1.59.44.02
Crystal clear reception and no fade in/out.
I believe the hardware in our two devices are similar/identical, so I don't think it's a network issue - I think you are on the right track trying different rom/radio combinations until you find one that works best. Good luck.

Your spot on .. POLARIS radio 1.59.44.02 has had the best results out of all so far.
People report they get the odd crackle but no fade in and or out.
What does HTC Australia say?
Hmm, given HTC have a presence in Australia and their recommended Radio for the TyTN II sold there currently shows 1.65.16.25 on their website (the one that gave me next to no GPS functionality when released here for UK customers), how has anyone done getting an official HTC solution to this problem with the TyTN II and the Aussie Telstra network? Is HTC Australia even aware of the problem? I hope they are more responsive that HTC here in the UK.

As far as I know there is no HTC Australia - only an importer. All of the HTC support for this region is run out of Asia, and in my experience, not too flash.
I've been using a TyTn II all year on the Telstra Next G network for my business (average 20 calls a day) and have flashed a few roms in that time but have never had anyone complain about sound quality with any of the Roms I've used. I use a Jawbone 2 bluetooth headset most of the time and I'm currently using the 3.34.721.2 WWE Rom with the 1.70.19.09 Radio and HardSPL 3.29 hard2 and can't recommend it highly enough, battery life is brilliant !!!
Hope this may be useful info.
Hi,
I've had a Compact IV/HTC Diamond for a good while now. Very familiar with flashing roms/radios etc, and looking for advice.
Wanted to use the phone with a AT&T sim whilst in NY, and use TMUK sim for back in UK. Phone is fully unlocked and tested in UK, but when I put a PAYG AT&T sim in NY it just states that phone isnt ready and no network is found.
I suspect that this might be down to the RADIO ROM - looking for somone to point me in the right direction to a suitable radio if this is the case...
Obviously no GSM available in the area, so rules out the WCDMA (UK) vs CDMA2000 (US)...
Phone will now be mainly used in NY on AT&T if I can get it working with your help... (father in-law just moved out there with one of my diamonds!!)
Help? Thoughts?
Thanks
rabmc
Hi all,
I while back I was playing with differnt OS builds on my HTC, eventually setteling on a 6.5 custom build, and have been very happy ever since.
However, I have now gone to the States on holiday and have found that the phone does not pick up a signal but through the it was quad band capable.
Is there anything I can do to get people to pick up a signal?
Cheers.

Oh, how rubbish is that. Is this the phone or the Networks fault? How would the network know that it is a Diamond 2 trying to connect, and if so why would they block this phone?
Is it area dependant (I'm in Florida at the mo) or is this across the US?
ATT is a GSM carrier as is T-Mobile. You should be able to connect to ATT and get 3G - even roaming. I would suggest you try removing your sim and then reinserting it. Also what radio are you running?
Are you using your sim from your own network? Do you have roaming enabled on your account? I know some carriers do not have roaming agreements and perhaps that is your problem. If so, you might get a pay-as-you-go sim?
Tried removing the SIM/re-instering, but made no differnce.
Roaming should be OK as I am on O2 and aggreed international roaming before I left. My partner is also on O2 although has a Sony phone, but connects to a carrier with no issues.
The ROM is Tom Topaz v2.06 WWE
Radio 3.46.26.18
Protocol version 61.30t.25.25U
Try switching out your sim with your friend's and see if it connects then. If it does it's your phone, if not, it's your network.
Otherwise I have no clue. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable than me will chime in.
Good luck and post your findings. I'm rooting for ya!

Interstingly, the SIM is fine - both work in the Sony (T-mobile), both fail in the HTC.
Over the bods that know - can it be resolved.
what radio band are you set to ?
ATT in us works best on 850

Ah ha - bingo. As I'm not eacatly part of the jet set, many moons ago I set the Band to GSM (900+1800), which of course is fine for Uk + Europe, but not patricularly briliant for the US.
Setting this to Auto and the phone springs into life.
The things you forget, eh!
I have a I9305 purchased from Hong Kong which came loaded with HK firmware, whilst it would have worked, for various reasons I want to install UK firmware, specifically official/stock versions. (I have run custom ROMs on other handsets in the past, just going to stay official for a while with this one)
I don't want any carrier-specific stuff on there, nor so I want to be held back (in the future) waiting for carrier-specific upgrades etc.
I have a few, hopefully yes/no questions:
1. I've search and as far as I tell you there is no unbranded, UK, stock firmware available, is that correct? (guess this is because nobody's selling it unbranded in the UK yet)
2. Is the best thing to do to monitor sammobile and samsung-updates until I see what I want?
3. When I finally do get my hands on the firmware I'll flash it with Odin - will I automatically get subsequent updates via Kies/OTA?
I'm current running I9305XXALK3 for region DNF...which I thought might be international/country-agnostic but since the default language it offered me on first boot was Suomi I guess it's actually for Finland!
The phone works fine, but it's only Android 4.1.1 and obviously I'd like to get on 4.1.2, I suppose another country (e.g. Germany) but unbranded is ok...but not perfect
Apologies for the long, first, post, hope it's not too annoying...I'm just excited about retiring my Hero and enjoying this new beast!

Thanks for the response...but those are all EE branded, will that:
1. mean I have to wait for EE to approve future updates? (I'm thinking once we have unbranded/unlocked handsets in the UK they will receive upgrades first)
2. have any effect on the network e.g. performance, connectivity etc.? (I'm currently on 3, not EE/Orange)
Thanks for any additional info
No and there is no EE branding or bloatware just pure stock.

Seriously!? - OK, that's great news - thank you for your help
hmmmmm...
OK, I've installed the latest i.e.
PDA: XXBMA6
PHONE: XXBLL5
CSC: EVRBLL1
A couple of observations:
1. As others have noted, the mobile network modes are limited to just 2 (2G/3G/4G auto connect & 3G only) whereas the previous firmware I was using had 4.
2. With the previous firmware it seemed to hold an H+ connection much better, with this firmware it seems to drop back to 3G+ most of the time.
Any thoughts? It would seem that this firmware, despite being official, is more limited than some others.
I'm not overly concerned with #1 (although does 3G only really mean just 3G or will it also use GPRS if that's all it can find?) but #2 (and I realise I haven't done any structured testing!) does worry me - I want the fastest speeds I can get as often as I can!
My gut feeling is that EE's firmware might not be optimal for those who want to operate on non-4G networks. (what does the Vodafone or O2 firmware have?)
Does anyone know for sure what's different and why?
Over active imagination?
Have flashed 3 different firmwares today

^this I think is a mistake on my part, I've played around a bit more and it looks like (but could be my imagination of course!) that the phone jumps up to H+ on demand e.g. refreshing a web page causes it to switch up from 3G+ to H+ once the page is loaded it reverts to 3G+.
Am I going nuts?

What you are seeing is called fast dormancy. Its kind of a battery saving feature hence why H+ is not always on. Most networks support this nowadays.

Can I ask, did you get the phone from Simply Electronics? Im currently waiting on mine arriving and since I ordered it have found out that their main warehouse is in HK, so I think I will be getting the same phone as you.
Im on Orange just now and when my contract is up will switch over to EE for the 4G, so will probably just flash the EE Firmware whenever the phone arrives.

I got mine from Panamoz...but all the Hong Kong dealers probably obtain the phones via the same routes.
Have to say I'm impressed with Panamoz so far, ordered at 2130hrs on Sunday evening and delivered to me in the UK on Wednesday. The real test will be if I have to use the warranty...but obviously I'm hoping that day never comes anyway!
My only comments are:
1. Mine was packaged for the French market e.g. the mains charger is for French sockets, the instructions are in French etc. (Panamoz did put a free mains adaptor in the package to deal with the charger) Wonder if any other options besides French were available, would have been nice to know this up-front.
2. The initial screens were in Chinese and if you're not familiar with Android you might not know that the first thing it asks on initial boot is what language you want to work in...I think it'd be handy if Panamoz provided a piece of paper with brief instructions and a screenshot explaining how to switch the language, otherwise some people might panic!
Thanks for the feedback.
I have actually just cancelled my order. 2 Weeks after placing the order it still hadnt been dispatched, and I was wanting it for this weekend. I'll just pop down to the local Orange shop and buy it there, its only £50 dearer so i can handle that ok.
Still using my trusty S1 just now but looking forward to the upgrade.
