Isn't A-GPS supposed to be a good thing? My experience with it so far shows navigation programs losing GPS connection frequently and no speed up in getting a GPS fix.
Am I missing something here? Is A-GPS in Diamond broken? Has anyone been able to make it work like it's supposed to?

How do you even turn it on?
How do you come to the conclusion the A in A-GPS is the culprit here?
I have the same problem. When I enable assisted GPS in advanced config, both IGO8 and TomTom losing GPS-signal frequently. Disabling assisted GPS makes the problem disappear and the GPS works again.

I turn it on using Advanced Config and GPS performance takes a sharp turn towards terrible...
I turn it off and GPS improves considerably.
Shoouldn't it be the other way around? I mean... A-GPS is Assisted GPS, right? Or is it Awful GPS?

Look, A-GPS you know what it is. To make it work, you have to use service providers software 'cause it works from cellular towers rather sat. itself.
Unless your provider support A-GPS you can`t get any benefit from it. That`s all.
I can use A-GPS here and get a fix very quickly - even inside a building so it is very useful for me. I haven't had any drop out issues either.
is there any particular service providers that it works well with?
First time i turned on A-Gps and when i first used tomtom the delay was huge and was always loosing signal...then i discovered that was A-Gps too... i didnt know it was provided by the mobile service...

You gotto check with the provider in your country. Check the provider you with. Check on there website too. Good luck.

Is this function in our Kaiser? I've enable it from the Kaiser Tweak but today i tested it when i was in a tunnel....it did not work at all and the tunnel was 4 KM long....it should have had enough time to get a fix if it was working.
Is the Assisted GPS what i think it is?
How do you expect to get a GPS fix in a tunnel???
AGPS is basically what the QuickGPS app. does: it downloads sat. data (satellite locations) via a network connection from a server, so that TTF (time to fix) is reduced, since the device doesn´t have to download above data from the satellites themselves - which is slow....
Hope I was not too unclear, doing a search will give you much more and detailed info about how GPS works......and it doesn´t in tunnles....
As mentioned above, the AGPS uses server information (via cellular network) to locate the GPS satellite for a quicker fix and hash conditions. For a 4KM tunnel, I'm sure that your phone would have lost both GPS and network signal.

Thats correct, there are som applications that tries to estimate where in the tunnel you are when the fix is gone. But I suppose this is a function of the application and not the GPS hardware
I stand partially corrected........ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assisted_GPS

Which is why the title is "Assisted GPS".....I've done some search on AGPS and it's suppose to use the cellular to still get a fix when in the tunnel. Well....i read it sometime ago way before Kaiser was out and this was actually one of it's talked about feature in Kaiser. Using the Kaiser Tweak, one can enable this feature but i've tested it today in the tunnel with strong cellular signal, the GPS is dead until i came out of the tunnel.
I guess it also has to be supported by the particular program. Many TomTom PNAs have a dead reckoning mode which shows your position in a tunnel based on your "entry" speed for about 30 seconds, than the position freezes in the tunnel. Now that of course has nothing to do with AGPS, but it´s a way of overcoming temporary signal loss.
Best way would be to have an inertial sensor built into the phone like in fix-mounted car-navs......but then again, that would be overkill....
You have to remember that the Assisted GPS (Cellular network mode) relies on the fact the network itself supports the feature. I know most in the UK don't have it turned on in general use. They only allow it to be used by emergency services and the likes.
Perhaps that's the same in your country?

Thanks guys for the input.
So the internal GPS is one of the primary reasons I wanted the Kaiser, but when it comes down to it, it's the rare occasion that I actually use the GPS for much, especially stuff outside of basic "where am I" and "how do I get there" with gmaps...
Even when using quickgps, sometimes when I need to know where I am in relation to somewhere I'm going, quickly, it can still take way too long to pick up sat signals. I was in the car with a friend the other night (this is a guy that I constantly harass for having an iPhone (and he harasses me for the opposite)) and when we both pulled out our phones with gmaps, he knew right where we were, instantly, while all I could do was sit there and try my hardest to not make excuses about why I wasn't picking up a sat signal quickly.
Unless I'm using other GPS software, for my uses with gmaps, I'd really rather just be able to use the triangulation that non-GPS phones use. I tried turning off the GPS (GPS program port: None) in settings, but gmaps just searches anyway, not finding any hardware and/or sats.
Is what I want to do possible? I'm sure I'll get several responses on how I can speed up my sat signal pickup, which is NOT what I'm looking for. I just want to be able to use gmaps "My Location" without using the internal GPS, thus saving battery as well as getting a quicker pickup on where I am...
TIA
Geo
Yes, what your asking for is just using "My Location" without GPS. I use "My Location" all the time it does not activate my GPS. Here is an article that confirms "My Location" does not use GPS.

I know that My Location can be used without GPS, I'm just wondering if it's possible on a Kaiser. Assuming you have a Kaiser device, what and how do you have it set up so that gmaps doesn't activate/use GPS, but instead uses the cell towers?
On my device using GoogleMaps 2.0.0.11 the option for My Location works separately from Use GPS. The location (within 1.7KM) is picked up within seconds, GPS does take longer but is accurate to individual rooms within my home. The Cell based locator is obviously dependent on your Carriers Cell towers and I know in the past I have been unable to get a location over HSDPA or 3G but GPRS worked. Now though on TMobile UK at home I can get my cell based location using any non Wifi data connection.

Ah, my apologies. Turns out I was not using the latest version. I've installed v2 with separate GPS/My Location, and My Location without GPS works great!
Thanks to all.

By default My Location DOES NOT use GPS. You have to enable GPS from the menu.
Yes I have a Kaiser (actually 2at&t Tilts) and use Google Maps (v2.0.0.12)

Yes, I found this out by installing the latest Google Maps (after my last ROM flash, I installed gmaps from a cab I already had on sd, which was apparently not a recent version).
Thank you - I love the fact that I can use gmaps without GPS now for the quick "where am I" without having to wait, but can still use GPS when I feel like it, and also still have it enabled in Settings for use in other GPS programs.
Thanks again
hi im waiting my new nexus one, as a posted before in general but before comes i want ask some questions. im reading about ROOT, and so on but i cant find how disable 3G, and disable AGPS since at the moment i dont have data plan, i will upgrade in couple of months because i was keep my lg incite and internet or NO and wait a little to upgarde 3G network, so im wonderin its anyway or guide oto turn off AGPS?and 3g?well and i guess if i didint configure grps i dont have worry about gprs but yes for 3g and AGPS any thoughs?sorry i searched and couldnt find im new on NO LOL i dont even have it yet xD

and i read sense desire seems BT isnt working =( so shame
any other good rom? what its your favorite?and its any HTC hero sense?or its the same as desire rom? well thanks a lot i will apreciate the help in this android world =X
You can use QuickSettings from the market to disable mobile networks completely. You can also in the phone settings only allow 2G.
As far as AGPS is concerned it uses Cell Towers to triangulate the location of the phone and doesnt use any Data unless you are using the Maps app which will need to download the map info.

theres a disable "use wireless networks" option. the description is "location determined by wifi and/or mobile networks"

That's not how AGPS works, it does use data, albeit a tiny amount. It receives info on the location of GPS satellites so it knows what to lock onto.

yay thanks i want my NO sooon i will tomorrow pay on ebay
ok i got the track number now and seems they send me the NO so im kind excited i want try root after test and maybe desire rom heh but i just want to know
the root its danger? i mean i guess its like linux "hack" to get root acces in exploit or something but never knows, root the device could brick the NO ?or its a low chance
anyone else notice that when using the Samsung captivate & navigation that is recommends turning on WiFi. it doesn't make sense, but i notice it makes a huge difference in speeding up satellite connection time with WiFi on.
could this be the issue with the GPS??
please confirm this.

This is not a fix. Turning WFi on will help give your phone another source to determine your location. The key thing here is that WiFi cannot determine your location as accurately as GPS can. If you look again, you'll probably see that your phone will "lock" onto your position much faster, but it's probably not going to be accurate enough to be usable.

you must have read the title before i edited it.
im not using the WiFi as a location source since i don't have any WiFi internet on the road.
but i notice that the GPS locks on quicker than without the Wifi on.
my nexus one never suggest to turn on WiFi when using navigation
Its not necessarily wifi based location but it can use wifi to download gps data. For a date lock. Its just a suggestion, I don't see why out would make a difference with out a wifi signal.
I prefer to not have network location or sensor aiding enabled. Sensor aiding really doesn't work. Made my my tracks results erratic. Network location gets me within 2 miles, not exactly good for navigation, having it on only allow something to fall back on of you lose gps signal but the whole process of the phone switching from one source to the other and back again takes to long. Keeping network location off forces it to only try to get a gps lock and in my opinion works better.
As far as wifi, if you believe it works better that way then do what every you think helps. It really should only download the data and once it has it it is done with wifi un till it needs new data which usually won't be for several hours.

I was curious as to why there is a button in the notifications menu to turn GPS on and off. I started to look in to it and discovered that there is indeed a GPS chip in the wife only version, or there seems to be anyway!
My question is, what does that chip exactly do? Does it only pick up your location? I can't seem to find any places around me with wifi off. I'm assuming that means all the map and location data is delivered over the internet through 3g or wifi. Is there anyway to use my device as I would a regular GPS device? I know it has all the features but can they work through the GPS chip like they do in a GPS device? Or is there anyway to get this to work?

Ok the wifi is mainly just for accessing networks either open or via ssd and password. You can also connected with mobile AP if your mobile has this option.
The GPS on the other-hand is for mapping and location based services like navigation etc (you can use copilot and several other gps based apps with the P1010). Some of these apps will also piggy back any Bluetooth and or wifi connections that are available for further triangulation if needed. So if you have any apps like various weather and navigation then the GPS is required (but also your location can be shared via your wifi and opt in to give this info through google).
Hope this helps

you can find your location via wifi, enable your wifi and turn gps on, you'll find your coordinates, but not that accurate compare to 3g
