Im Confused about how Device Resolutions work .
i mean like all new htc ppc devices have a 2.8" lcd yet the resolutions are diffrent like the htc touch hermes kaiser gene they all Qvga 240x320 but diamond also 2.8" but it has VGA how does it work.
the one Asus Smartphone has a 2.0" screen but its QVGA or but the HTC 310 and ipaq 500 voice messenger and maybe mpx200 are QQVGA its so flipin confusing.
So is the resolution set through registry or drivers or what? I read in the typhoon section of a Wm6 cooked rom being able to make the htc typhoon resolution to QVGA.

The device resolution is built into the actual screen. The resolution is the number of dots that are found on one row or column of the screen. QVGA has 240x320 dots that make up the screen matrix. VGA (at least) doubles these numbers to 480x640.
If you see devices that have the same SIZE screens (2.8"), but different resolutions, that means the DOTs are different sizes. A VGA screen will often have smaller dots than QGVA, and as such, better resolution that looks clearer to your eyes.
One can use software to emulate a lower-resolution screen on a higher-resolution device, but not vice-versa. So a VGA screen COULD be made to appear as a QVGA screen, but not the other way around.
Hoping this doesn't muddy up the waters for you even more,

in simple terms.
qvga (240*320) will consume same amount of graphic memory be it 2" screen or 2.8" or 3.5" or 1 square kilometre!
lcd screens are built with fixed amount of pixels, but density varies with size and resolution.

It's quite a read, but THIS ARTICLE might help you understand. If you need more, an internet search should turn up quite a bit of information ... especially in some of the digital photography forums.

That Was Long flip
Yeah i get it now bigger not always better but being as that maybe my hp ipaq 514 compared to the 6110 Navigator the nokia looks better but i think its the brightness anyhow 65k is good. Its True what they say knowlage is power so people who dont know are mislead when the told a device is 262k or better thanks man

Hi all, well I make no secret of being a technological cave man so could someone please explain what the difference is in a QVGA screen as opposed to a VGA screen...? The Kaiser (and all its incarnations) is a QVGA isnt it? Cheers
QVGA = Quarter Video Graphics Array
VGA = Video Graphics Array.
really, QVGA is 240 by 320 pixels. VGA is 480 by 640.
......so the difference is 230400 pixels......
Many thanks for the info...

lmao nice calculation skills.
Qvga is 320*240 resoultion, VGA is 640*480 resolution
Actually I think QVGA is quarter VGA, i.e. VGA has FOUR times as many pixels. 320*240=76800 ; 640*480=307200
if i'm correct, the QVGA displays show everything like on a VGA display. For example, the buttons have the same size, also the fonts have the same size, the only difference is that VGA makes it being sharper. So you can say that this is scaled. Some nifty apps can remove this scaling, which enables you to show more on your display
Should i wait for Touch pro or just get Diamond?
The specifcation for Touch pro is definately what i'm looking for except "keyboard" and "size"
However, Diamonds has no externmal memory, and flash.
Now i'm really confuse, wheter to wait for Tocuh pro to release or just get diamond now
Many review say this diamond is very interesting.
Thanks for the advice.
If you don't want the keyboard, or the bloated size, then the Diamond's the one to choose.
You can always manage files to keep within the 4gb. You can't leave half the Pro at home when you don't want the size issue.
Kevin
Yep. Get the Diamond. 4GB is more than enough for most people, and a lack of flash will just mean some of your pictures will be lower quality. Meanwhile the extra size and keyboard problems would be considerably harder to solve - you can't compress the phone, but you can compress files!
Keyboard vs no Keyboard should be the main deciding factor.
Memory would then be secondary as the TD DOES have 4gb still...
To be honest I'm gonna miss the qwerty keyboard on this device, but when I sum up the positive and negative sides from both pda's I personally think you're better off with the diamond if you're an avarage user. To sum my (most important) opinions:
Keyboard:
I think the keyboard is very handy, but I don't like the thickness of the Touch Pro. At the moment I have a MDA Vario (wizard). Great device (for it's time) but it's just too gigantic imo. When you look at the new software keyboard it looks like it works like a charm (by the way, does anyone have real experience with it?) and makes the keyboard look very depricated imo.
Memory/SD:
Yeah, upgradable can be very handy. But if you look at the Diamond specs.. I mean, 4 gig.. Isn't that just enough for a phone/pda?
By the way. It's mentioned nowhere that the Diamond has a better VGA screen. While the touch pro displays 65.536 colours, the diamond displays 262.144 colours. More the reason to choose the diamond for me!
Totally agree.
moving from Excalibur to Diamond was quite a challenge for me personaly.
I miss my easy texting on hardware qwerty keyboard I like new touchflo but as soon as Touch Pro is out, I will be switching to Rafael. Diamond is great though. Just not my cup of tea

I currently use Artemis,
Actually Touch pro size is not so different from Artemis
Touch Pro: 102 mm (L) X 51 mm (W) X 18.05 mm (T)
Artemis: 108 mm (L) X 58 mm (W) X 16.8 mm (T)
Only 1.25 MM. thicker
However, still i never used any keyboard phone
XDA Mini--> Atom--> Prophet --> Artemis ---> ???
Just wonder, if i keep on Diamond.. is will be the same feeling
I have no conclusion yet, Thanks

Where did you find this info? This and this state the opposite...
And then, this is like the fifth thread about that. Let's try to keep it all in one place. Anyways, my opinion...

I think your second 'this' was meant to be this.
And PDAdb has had inaccurate information in the past, so maybe... *crosses fingers in hope of better screen on Touch Diamond*

Oops, sorry bout that.
Well since Diamond is already out can somebody confirm if it's a 65k or 262k? Although it's the first time I hear about this difference and afaik 262k is not native for WM devices.
is the Pro 288 MB RAM vs diamond 192MB RAM
I live with my hermes more than 2 years so the size is not the problem (IMO no phone could beat the hermes (Iphone, Kaiser...) but the Touch pro is the killer)

Well, I was kinda hoping that it would be true. I'll show you the sources:

I assumed these were the right specifications, but hey, you made me doubt myself .
Wouldn't count on that. I guess it's the only site stating that. Check this too. It's absolutely the same display.

the moste important fact for me was the vga resolution on the diamond, the samsung has only a 240x400 resolution...
thats more like a killer armed with a watergun
I have to agree with chaos42. While the Samsung is a slick device, resolution is a HUGE deal. Once you go VGA, you can't go back. Of course, WVGA would be nice...
Also, it looks like the TD is somewhat significantly smaller... Also a huge deal. I love having a phone that does so much more than an iPhone AND is smaller...

I'm only just getting onto the whole TP idea (afte considering an Xperia), but I'm currently on a Nokia N95 which is 99 x 53 x 21. The TP/Raphael is 102 x 51 x 18...so for me it'll be smaller!!
See, when you compare an N95, which although big, is a great device, yet still easy enough to put in one hand, you can see that the Pro really isn't huge...
And compared to the old HTC Universal, they're ALL teeny tiny. And compared to my truck - I could carry around a phone-booth and it would be small. I can't think of any phones that wouldn't "fit in a hand". The quest for ever-smaller devices is more about what fits in your pockets than your hand, and to that point - I have found that anything with a physical keyboard is going to be too big.
And my athena too It's tiny compared to that
Hi everyone,
I'm just wondering, is there anyway use vga resolution on our htc jade. My friend use his diamond with vga resolution. But i don't know is there any rom to support this feature or how can we cooke a rom for change resolution to vga? Thanks for your opinion.
It is impossible.
Read HARDWARE specs. The Jade's screen is 320x240 (qvga), Diamond is 640x480 (vga). That is the main reason why Diamond is much more expensive.
ok i miss some details thanks.

Do you guys believe we will someday have the new Sense interface from HTC Hero for the Blackstone?
http://www.htc.com/de/press.aspx?id=103534&lang=1033
In this article (only in german, sorry) they say that it will be available also for Windows Mobile:

...dreaming...

yes we can!
lol yes.. i think so but it will sure take some time.. sad but true. altough i am looking forward a lot. android, sense and so on..
You can see it in action here...

The famous multi-touch feature is there aswell.
The Hero looks awesome, but the screen is kinda small.
i was reading up on this on my rss feeds and the article i read said they that are thinkin about possibly porting this over to the windows mobile side which would be nice
in a way it reminds me of pointui a bit but if your lookin for something along those lines for windows mobile right now then ponitui is there
The Sense UI (or as HTC terms it, "user experience") riding a capacitive touchscreen offers a people-centric approach to managing your information that is absolutely dreamy at first blush -- though it shares a lot of TouchFLO heritage. In fact, HTC promises to have a very similar Sense-branded experience for Windows Mobile.
Usually, a new HTC device means new GPU drivers and a few tweaks, but now, we could get a whole new UI! That said, we'll have to wait for a WVGA HTC device with this Sense UI before it will look half-decent on our blackstones.
Half the juice on our phones is taken up by Windows. What would be awesome is if we can port Android. Another interesting thing to note is that Hero has a capacitive screen so I'm guessing it'll be a better experience (with multi touch). All said I can only drool. Wishes and regards to all the great chiefs
I think it includes a software multitouch system, because comparing specs of both devices, in the Screen we see:
HD: 3.8-inch TFT-LCD flat touch-sensitive screen with 480 x 800 WVGA resolution
Hero: 3.2-inch TFT-LCD touch-sensitive screen with 320x480 HVGA resolution
I know that Hero have multi touch because I saw it at the video presentation.
Let's hope that's true

yep, noticed that too and thought the same...
It does have multitouch, I read it in a review
Hi to all cookers here you have done a wonderfull job so far. What i was wondering is it possible i saw it gsmarena site that the new htc hero is much like iphone the photos or galery and the internet browser are made multitouch. Is it possible somehow to get the drivers of the screen from hero and to make the hd as well multitouch like hero. I know that it is a very hard work and i know how the multitouch works i mean i understand very good i just am not that good a programer to make it my self. But since hd and the hero are alike in almost everything hardware wise i was just wondering if it possible. I know that hero useses android linux and the broweser should be chromo and suports multitouch maybe some programer can make it work in wm as well.
Thanks hope someone does it and make us all very happy
i believe that current resistive screens (like the Touch HD) are not capable of multi-touch at all.
the Hero i think has a capacitive screen (like the G1/Iphone/Magic) and does support multitouch.
i have read that next gen resistive screens will support multitouch but i think its more about the hardware than just the drivers....

I was always thinking that, its a screem thing rather than software. Winmo should be multi touch by the time of wm 7 i hope.
Resistive Screen to now couldn't be multitouch: it's HW problem.
Maybe you could emulate multitouch but it's hard to do
D'rath
Let me clear one important issue: resistive touchscreen does not exclude multitouch. Resistive screen technically can multitouch and can be much better in terms of sesitivity than iPhone. Technology is out there for a while but sadly for end-users it is not used (and manufacturers have many rea$ons to keep it that way). Current blackstone hardware is limited and cannot provide multitouch.
Hero screen TFT capacitive touchscreen, 65K colors
Size 320 x 480 pixels, 3.2 inches
HD screen TFT resistive touchscreen, 65K colors
Size 480 x 800 pixels, 3.8 inches
It is the same just the drivers are missing from the HD drivers needet for the screen to know when u touch in to plasec at once to calculate not only one touch at the time
Eugh...
Resistive and capacitive are just different technologies for achieving what we know as touch screens. "Multi touch" is purely software. Capacitive is better built and more rugged whereas resistive is cheaper but more precise.
Hi all,
Take a look at this:
http://www.umpcportal.com/2009/02/multi-touch-comes-to-resistive-touchscreens
If I have understood correctly, it could be possible to implement this feacture in a standard resistive touch screen. Perhaps our HD screen supports this feature.
Hope this helps!

it is nothing to do with WM OS is all about hardware
WM is much much advance OS compare to iPhone or G1
I just wonder if WM6.5 can be developed similar to Nokia N97 to have few widgets on main screen and information can be updated automatically.

yes yes bro i am not that good a programer to make it my self that is why i asked if anyone can do it maybe if I was able to find drivers of hero and work some magic in IDE it is all in assembler maybe i can do it the screen just need to calculate the touch right now it wont register 2 touch try to push it in to saperate places in any app that can draw and u will see that the drawing will be in the middle cuz the drivers dont understand what happend they will calculate it in the middle but if we change the drivers make them understand that we are touching to different places to sets of different calculations then it will work
