TomTom 6 Guide for HTC Kaiser (FAQ)

Here I compiled list of question and answer about using TomTom 6 with the HTC Kaiser. Forum Mods, if this is good enough, please make it sticky topic.
*** Which version of TomTom is in the Application CD?
6.032 (8351) - as of September 15, 2007
*** Is that full version or trial version?
It is called TomTom Taster Edition and It is full version, it will not expired, and there is no feature limitation compared to retail version.
*** Is it installed in the ROM by default?
No, it is not. You need to manually install it.
*** How to install it?
Connect to ActiveSync, from the HTC Kaiser Application CD, launch:
Installer_Kaiser_ttn_6_032_8351_HTC_WWE_20070716.EXE
*** I dont have that executable file in my HTC Kaiser Application CD!

*** I have TomTom 6.030 (or prior version), what's the main difference?
6.032 has "Built-in Internal GPS" setting and the HTC Kaiser also have one.
*** Can I use/install other maps?
Yes you can. You can purchase additional maps (maps only), and then activate it.
*** Warning! Do not change the external GPS setting!
You should see "external GPS" icon in the Settings->System, do not change anything there.

*** How can I use my own TomTom software?
So, you do not want to use TomTom from the Application CD.
Basically, you just need to install your own TomTom software and use this setting for the GPS:
- Other NMEA GPS receiver
- GPS baud rate = 4800
- GPS is connected to COM4:

*** How good is the internal GPS? Any problems?
From my own experience, it is working fine. Signal strength may vary and it depends on the situation (cloudy, clear sky, surounding area, buildings, etc.).
On average, I got satellite fix around 30 - 60 seconds.
However, some people experienced problems which you can follow here:

"The GPS bug seems to occur with some applications whereby the GPS 'data stream' will pause for a few seconds at a time, which makes some apps think the GPS has gone away (e.g. Google Maps) and other apps just update in sudden jumps rather than smoothly."

But, I think that problem is intermittent (randomly occur).

*** TomTom always start with NO SOUND, why?
It's a bug, you have to switch off the data connection before starting TomTom.
SIMPLE FIX: Roll the volume wheel and sound turns on.

The above is all good info.
However, if you are having problems do not believe that the above is the only setup that will work.
I happen to use a bluetooth setup from time to time and have used the external GPS settings without problems.
A working setup for me for intermal GPS uses Other NMEA on COM 9 at a Baud Rate of 19200. In the Tomtom settings.
All other GPS programmes I use are set to COM9
When I setup the bluetooth I have it set to:
Serial Port (ticked)
Outgoing Port COM 9
Authentication (unchecked)
External GPS (in System menu)
(Perform a full backup before changes here - due to reports that changes here may ruin the GPS connection requiring a hard-reset to get it going again)
GPS Programme Port COM9
Hardware (None)
Access (Manage GPS automatically - ticked)
By the way the basic freeware plotting applications I use DO NOT require the clumsy workaround of starting tomtom in order to open the internal GPS. That problem seems to be limited to an issue with Google Maps.
NB
Other ports will work - eg COM0 but you must ensure that for example if you set outgoing port in bluetooth (if you also use BT GPS) to COM0 then it will also be COM0 in tomtom or any other GPS software. Any mismatch and you'll wait forever!

In the tomtom satellite screen (the one that shows aseries of columns for each satellite - there is a useful verbal comment at the top of the screen it will say one of three things:
1
No GPS Device - (always says this initially for 2/3 seconds. If things are set correctly it will move to 2 but if your ports are wrongly set it will stay on this)
2
No Valid GPS Signal - (means it has found internal GPS device and is trying to find satellites - anything from 2 or 3 seconds to couple of minutes if you have not used Quick GPS, it will then move to 3 if you are in range of satellites)

Other NMEA GPS Receiver - (says this when locked on to satellites and working correctly)
The above 3 steps are useful to just check whether the setup and port is correct. Even if you do not want to use tomtom it's worth running it at least once just to iron out any port problems.

How?
I copy the folders of others maps into the microsd, bit if i go to settings- change maps I can't see them! Then i can't put the code to activate them!
What i'm doing wrong?

Tried to install this 6.032 version on my TyTN II but got the following error on the device upon starting the installation: "Setup Error: Unable to install application. Please update your device ROM to the required version before trying again." - any ideas? Thanks ...
Would be happy to pay for the software / maps if they wouldn't it make all that difficult to get it installed for a trial ...

Maybe this is a dumb question, but I can't get the On board GPS to kick up and when I look under settings, the only thing there is "External GPS"....
How do you get it to use the internal GPS?

Are you sure u installed 6.032 Tom Tom release? Is the version caming with CD and is not in Tom Tom web. Is the only version that works with internal GPS; but youet guy. can have problems to install it, if you have a previous version.

There is no "internal GPS" icon in the "Settings", only "external GPS"
And dont mess around with the "external GPS", you might need to hard-reset.
TomTom 6.032 has its own setting to use the "internal GPS".

I would disagree with that. Other versions of tomtom DO work. But in tomtom's "configure" select other NMEA instead of internal GPS

I agree. I wanted say is the only version capable to tune internal GPS from Tom Tom program. I know versions 6, 6.02 and 6.03 works with othen NMEA and port 4, but my impresion is with internal get satellites faster.

Is there a way for TomTom to give the vocal instruction through the Bluetooth headset ?

As I understood, the T-Mobile version does not have TomTom Taster edition included in the application CD, correct???
If that's the case, I am afraid that the TomTom 6.032 from the HTC Kaiser "unlocked" version is a special build only for that unlocked model.
Just use 6.030, it works fine (read in the FAQ).

Yeah i guess if the rom numbers dont match up, it wont let you install. Not on Taster CD.

I installed the Tom Tom and the one free Map, but I still have the same issue I had with Google maps of having to run GPS Viewer to start up the GPS.
I'm sure its a configuration issue for Tom Tom but I can't figure out what the problem is.

You got problem with Google maps and you thought that is TomTom configuration issue? ...

Hi all. I currently have a copy of TomTom5 on my Vario III. I have no idea how to get it to pick up the built-in GPS. Any idea guys?

Go to the Main Menu in TT5.
Click Change preferences.
Click the Next arrow until you get to page 4.
Click Show GPS status.
Click Configure.
Click the Next arrow until you get to Other NMEA GPS.
Click Select.
Leave the GPS baud rate at 4800 and click Done.
Choose the COM port your GPS is connected to. (My Tilt is on COM4, you can use trial and error.)
Click Done.

(maybe a stupid question...) Doesn't the Touch Diamond have a built-in GPS receiver? If yes, how to I activate it? (can't find it anyware with the TRL cooked ROM). Thx.

YES if you bought your Diamond didn`t you read specs. ? You`re buying random stuff ?
You don`t need to activate that you need software which can use it. E.g. TomTom, iGO, Garmin, McGuider etc ...

also, try Google Maps, works nicely -> http://www.google.com/gmm/

To be more clear, GPS is automatically activated (and deactivated) by the software that uses it. You don't need to worry about it.

but first you have to go to Settings - > External GPS and make sure the COM port that you set there matches the one you set in your software...
it can be managed automatically but I hate automatic stuff.

Thanks, guys - you are GOLD. Got it working now - in Google Maps. Any suggestions for an alternative GPS app? - TomTom, IGo, Garmin, Route 66? What's best?
I would prefer:
1. Automatic updating of map data.
2. Local download of map data to internal storage.
3. Good and updated European coverage.

happyguy82 was perfectly right that you have to make sure that you know the com port in external GPS. Anyone trying to get TomTom 6 working knows this for a fact.
Unless of course you were being sarcastic and the forum hasn't put that across?

From the Manual:
"External GPS: Set the appropriate GPS communication ports, if required.
You may need to do this when there are programs on your device that
access GPS data or you have connected a GPS receiver to your device."
sorry if i am wrong, but i think external GPS settings are for an external gps and not the built in. i never touched this settings except when i had an ETEN with a defective gps and i used an external one. right now my GPS hardware port is set to (none) and my iGO8 works just fine with the port it autodetected. tom tom needs special settings for this? sorry didn't know and i fail to see why......

A1.Automatic updating of map data???? with tomtom7 u can update the map data but not fully automatic(we wish), u have to connect it to your pc with tomtom home2 and have mapshare activated.
A2.as i know not possible yet
A3.In my oppinion Igo8 has the latest maps (2008Q1) of europe

Never felt the need to open this up - as there is no need as you say and the default is com 4 anyway.

A2. Possible with Garmin Mobile XT. I use Garmin and the beauty of it is that everytime I flash a ROM, once all the extras are loaded and the Diamond starts up, I get auto-prompted if I want to install Garmin, then agree to the license and it's done! No need to install CABs again or run Mapsource or anything! One thing I still haven't figured out is how to back-up my custom locations so I can reload them after flashing.

Installing TomTom, iGO
Ok, i need some serious help when it comes to installing TomTom, iGo or any other of these GPS apps. All the readme: s say you're suppose to copy the folders to your SD card, but obviously the Diamond uses internal memory, so this can't be done. I've tried plugging in the Diamond to my computer, choosing "storage card" instead of ActiveSync, and copying the iGo folder into the program files directory of the internalmemory. But nothing happens. Even if I open the iGo .exe from the Diamond itself later on. So again, can someone please tell me how to install one of these things?

Simply let it scan for your GPS settings, picked up mine at COM4 (just like the Windows Settings state).

but it says no gps reception, what do you choose from gps settings? where is asks if gps reciever is bluetooth bla bla bla

checked and myn iz same version

doesn't work. on the gps status show -1 on the Satellites and -1.0 on HDop

Try attached files. Extract all files into NAVIGON directory (on PPC). In Navigon.mscr set corect path for MobileNavigator.exe and run Navigon.exe. It works for me.

Change to Duttys rom it worked for me with this, but not with vic diamond or Dia Duit.
also worked with others as I change roms regularly & did not come acsoss the problem until I loaded Dia Duit, which has to be the most convenient one of them all.

Hello this works for me. How could i make that navigon starts in landscape mode using your script?
Reality view works (only in LScape mode)

paste ppc folder files onto navigon folder, (just copy the files not the whole folde!) and of course edit navigon.mscr in order to have internal storage in the route, where it is (almacenamiento interno) (Spanish)
it turns to landscape and then when you exit the program it returns to vertical. The problem is that backlight remains and duration is toggled to 10s, and you have to fix it everytime after exiting navigon.
Ah something else, i have Landmark_EU_Q4_2008.nxs n landmark directory, but i think reality is not working. How can i check? Landmark_EU_Q3_2008.nfs is also there and has different extension!

i just ried to switch landscape for use with MN|7, but i cant get it to work properly. (ROM>AZTOR x2 GER, MN 7.3)
any1 knows if there is a app to assign like "press hangup long" to switch the screen to landscape?
also tried PPC.ZIP and the others, not working.
MN7LS_90.ARM.zip tried one time (with error after launching)
i'll continue on my journey finding the right tool, maybe someone can enlighten me!
and yes, would be nice to have TF3d enabled

I used a program called Glopus http://www.glopus.de/glopuscab.php
This app basically simulates a Com Port for navigon to see.
In Glopus :
1. go to Data source drop down menu and choose "COM 9 (Serilot)"
2. Tap on "Configure Serilot" button underneath
3. You will have two more drop down Menues: In the upper one choose "Com 9" in the lower choose "Com 4)
4. click ok
In Navigon:
1. Go to GPS status
2. Tap on settings
3. Choose manual config
4. Select plain GPS device
5. In Ports choose "COM 9"
6. In Baud rate choose 9600
Done.

GPS with Google map is not working

I try to use Google map with GPS but it's success! Seem Google map can't detect any satellites. Anyone has the same problem? Who has experience to fix it?

Works OK for me, the first time took a while to lock on but OK after that. Make sure you run QuickGPS as well

Thanks for your reploy! I did enable A-GPS by Advanced Configure and run QuickGPS but the google did not work! It tried to seek satellites but nothing found!

The first time I ran the program it had to have a clear line of sight to the sky for a few minutes - between 5-10 i think.
After that it should be a bit quicker, but of course it doesn't often work inside a house so you may need to stand in your garden

Try this : Menu / Options / GPS setting / Manual setting (approximately, I have it in czech),and I have in other application COM4 and Baud-rate 4800

I've had the same problem in the beginning. GMaps couldn't connect to GPS at all.. I then set the GPS settings to manual, but it didn't work.. Reverted to automatic and got the gps working within 15 seconds!

This setting is a waste of time, as you need your mobile operator to support A-GPS for a start, and then you must have the correct settings entered which are not exposed in Advanced Configuration. By default the phone will be trying to contact an HTC test server which can't be reached from any mobile network.
Disable A-GPS for best results unless you have the settings required and it is supported by your mobile operator.
