Sound file location - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

Where do i put sound files so that i can see them in the New text and new mms notification options

locate the sound files to the root drive of the "internal storage" or "internal storage/my documents'. should work fine. there may be a lag though cos the file isn't on the phone storage memory but just a short 1-2 secs only

SD Card issues/questions

Is that the limitations of the hardware? or is that the largest stable SDHC Micro card out so far?
I've run a search for Micro SDHC and while I have come up with links to items as high as 16 (or 12) I get a lot more hits for 8...
I hope its not a hardware limitation.
Also...they should've given the phone 1GB at least of internal storage....oh well.
the g1 support microSD™ memory card (SD 2.0 compatible)
and that mean that it could support 32gb
but the 16gb card was just released and there hasn't been much testing on it
it is just safer to say "up to 8gb"
but the g1 comes with a 1gb microsd card
http://www.t-mobile.com/shop/phones/detail.aspx?tp=tb1&device=d2c92ac2-bccf-4343-9f9e-d008d0ec10b9
Yeah it'll be up to 32GB after they're released
good that's what I thought...up to 8GB made no sense as a pure limit.
At launch, the G1 will in fact work with 'up to' 8gb microSD cards. This will change with the 1st firmware update, at which point higher capacity cards will work.
FYI -- an excellent source of Android, and G1, info are the forums at http://www.androidcommunity.com
Is it possible to install programs straight to the card
cause if not whats the point of an sd card
71mb will be eaten up really quick

Default Running apps from memory card - Dont Panic!
Alright, there have been plenty of panic threads about applications only downloading to the phone. Stop it! Applications WILL be able to be installed to the SDcard! There have been rumors cited that Google will add that option to the OS, and even if they don't we are running on a linux kernel, and apparently can use a terminal. The fix would be simple.
=======================
The commands below are NOT TO BE RUN on your phone. I will not have my hands on the phone until Tuesday, if you feel like doing this before then you need to do some exploration first to figure out the proper directories to move over to the SDcard. This is just what you would do in any linux based system.
Say you find out the bulk of your apps are in:
/usr/local/apps/
So you have like
/usr/local/apps/breadcrumbz.apk
/usr/local/apps/opera.apk
/usr/local/apps/...
You would just open up the terminal (which I've heard alot about and am very excited about having linux shell access on my phone!) and enter...
~ $ mv /usr/local/apps /sdcard/
~ $ mount --bind /sdcard/apps /usr/local/apps
~ $ echo /sdcard/apps /usr/local/apps bind defaults 0 0 >> /etc/fstab
And BAM you just moved all your apps to the storage card and set it up so that whenever android accesses or writes to /usr/local/apps it's writing to the storage card. The power of linux haha.
This is NOTHING to be worried about.

How could you 'not read' posts there? You don't have to be registered to access the site, only to post.
Folder layout of the memory card
I fought this over and over until I formatted my storage card IN the phone, via the computer.
I wanted my music to show up in the music player but not my ringtones or alerts.
After doing some searching, this is what I found:
>Connect the usb cable to the phone, and switch the phone to usb storage
>The computer will find a removable storage device. Format it. (I did a quick format, fat32)
>when finished, make the following folders:
-music
-ringtones
-notifications
-alarms
From the tmobile online guide:
• ringtones - Music files copied to the “ringtones” folder will display in the phone (incoming call) ringtone menu.
• notifications - Music files copied to the “notifications” folder will display in the notifications ringtone menu.
• alarms - Music files copied to the “alarms” folder will display in the Alarm ringtone menu.

I created the folders you suggested and I'm still struggling with this. My ringtones still do not show up in the ringtone list. I have to go find the song in music and long press and set as default ring.
I was having that same problem before formatting, about half of the ringtones would not show up correctly. After I formatted the card and set up the new layout they all are showing up now. If set up this way, you should not even see the music thats in the ringtone folder unless you are setting a ringtone.

menu - settings - SD card & phone storage -
Use for USB storage (check that box)
also note when you are in the storage mode and connected to a computer you will not be able to see or use the documents on the card, the phone wont see them

ok i am so confused right now the 1gb card that came with the phone was in my phone checked that usb stoarge thing formated my card and made those folders put ringtones in there noghting happend i puled my 2gb card from my wing and put it in my computer to remove things hat were on would not let me delete any thing had to put in my phone to delete dose that mean its formated to my phone
SD/USB/etc.
ok...
the folders work, use lowercase when making them.
for your computer to see the card you have to check the "USB storage button" do whatever you want to do (folders, copies, whatever)
UNCHECK the USB box for the phone to use the SD card...
it is a toggle we live with at the moment.

Simple question: How do I view N1 files & folders from PC?

I know this is a total noob question, but how do you view files and folders on the n1? Plugged in the usb cable and the drive showed up on the pc but it's unreadable. What's missing? Like to transfer apk files from the pc to the storage card.
Thanks
Turn on mass storage from the notification bar... be sure to safely remove before turning it off.
Sorry, just got this today and embarassed to ask how is this done.
What do you mean, "it's unreadable"?
You view files and folders on the N1 just the way you are describing. That's how I do it.
Got it sorted guys thanks. Didn't know to drag the the status screen down to enable the mass storage.
How do you see the internal phone storage to delete files? Been trying to figure this out. Have a file manager app and been through all the folders and can't locate where data is stored internally.
Get the EStrongs File Explorer app. You can even connect to shared folders in your network
Got it, nice app. Trying to figure out where "browser" downloads are stored? Have some stuff like to clear that are not on the sd card.
They are on the SD card, in the /downloads folder.
Unless you're rooted (which I believe isn't the case), you can't change anything or even see anything in most of internal folders. And you can't see them anywhere, unless you're familiar with Linux and ADB.
Installed some file explorers and can see all files and folders. Bought direct from google for AT&T.

Gallery still needs to be fixed doesn't it?

So I have a folder called 'Icons' on my SD card. When I download an icon from the browser it goes into the 'downloads' folder. I goto my file manager and move the icon from 'downloads' to 'Icons'. Then I goto Gallery and see this:-
One instance of the Icons folder without the newly downloaded icon
A 2nd 'Icons' folder with only the newly downloaded icon and nothing else
the downloads folder still showing anything that I've moved across to the Icons folder or any other folder
I have rechecked the folder and file structure on my PC and the Gallery is definitely wrong. I only have one Icons folder and nothing in my downloads folder. The horribly slow refresh of the Gallery app is a common issue isn't it?
Aaarggh these annoying imperfections on the Nexus One really drive me nuts! I don't understand why Google, at times, produces these half-baked applications.
It's not half baked, did you rescan the media on the mSD card?
Thanks for the reply. How do I rescan media? A Google search on "android rescan media sd card" doesn't help me
Look in dev tools -> media scanner. (application on the phone)
That function is usually called after the sdcard has been unmounted after transferring files to the card.
PS. I don't find the gallery to be slow by any means, but I don't have thousands of pictures on it either. (not saying that's your case, just an over exaggeration)

Sorry, where is dev tools or media scanner? I think my original post needs a bit more clarification. I actually moved the files across from one folder to another using Estrongs File Explorer. I then reconfirmed the directory/file structure (after Gallery acted funny) using both ES File explorer and my PC.

I only have 21 images on my sd card (2 in camera folder, 15 in 'icons' folder and 4 in 'wallpapers' folder). I have absolutely zero issues with the speed of the Gallery app. My complaints are to do mainly with behaviour. I've just rebooted the phone, and Gallery still isn't able to identify the folder structure properly.
Connect USB to PC, mount and unmount your SD card.
That should do it.

It rescans the card when it's mounted, but not all of the time, so if you manipulate it with a file editor it won't see the changes.
So remount the card, or if you do this often, there's a Market app.. http://www.cyrket.com/p/android/com.humanrobot.scanmedia/

[Q] Storage question - External_sd classed as misc?

I see a similar question was asked but never answered.
When I go to check my storage my USB storage has 4.98gb classed as misc.
when you click misc it shows you the misc files.
4.66gb of this data comes from external_sd.
Does anyone know where I can find this with a file explorer? (or on computer)
Does anyone know why these files are put in to external_sd?
If I delete the file what will I be deleting?
My SD card seems properly mounted i.e I can access files from it play music and copy files to it.
Thanks
Bump?
I just noticed the same thing today - showing 33.5GB of misc on a USB storage with total 11.07GB space ... "Ye canny defy the laws of physics cap'n", I thought
My view is that "USB storage" is just poorly named, and it should really say "internal SD storage". The "SD card" section below that is also poorly named as it should really be named "external SD card". (note - I haven't looked at this screen while I have had a flash drive connected via "real" USB, so I'm not sure whether the bizzare naming starts making more sense in that scenario?)
Anyway, as your "external" (i.e. removable) sd card is mounted under the "internal" storage as /sdcard/external_sd, it seems the capacity on the external sd card is just being treated (in this settings/storage summary screen) as being part of the internal sd capacity.
The bit of the "USB storage" labeled "misc" is part of a colour coded bar chart of total space, nominally part of the internal SD card. It's purpose is to give a non-technical breakdown of the types of media that are occupying space (hence separate colours for "known categories" apps, audio, video, pictures etc.).
"Misc" is clearly just what they've used to cover everything else on the storage (so, designed for stuff like database files, text files and other random app data stuff that isn't easily classifiable).
As they've treated the mounted sd card as if it were part of internal SD, my guess is that it all just got too messy for the underlying script that was trying to identify and summarise media files recursively through all the sub-directories under /sdcard.
End result, they have lumped the total capavity of the external sd card into "misc" on the internal sd (whilst confusingly labeling that as "USB storage"), even though they have also itemised the same space separately down below under "SD card", without trying to display pretty coloured barcharts showing the usage profile.
In short - a total balls up of an attempt at summarising storage usage on the phone in laymans terms, but understandable once you get your head around it;; The "misc" discrepency doesn't indicate any problem ... beyond bad scripting & UI design

[Q] Database changed or Memory Unavailable Error in Album

Hi -
I had updated my XZ1 to 4.4.2. In the Album, there is an option Faces (which detects the faces) and asks to add names. So when I try to add name I get the message "Database Changed or Memory unavailable". The other problem I am facing is that my Camera storage was earlier on SD card. I still can see the photos on SD card thru the File Commander. The Album is not showing any of those photos but it shows the album art from my media folder. I am thinking both are connected in the sense that it has the cache of faces somewhere (I cleared data and cache multiple times) but it is not recognising the actual photo database for some reason so it is not able to write the name information (When I select the name option) to the actual photos.
Any suggestions..
I got it myself. Copy the photos some where else, then delete the DCIM folder. Now take one photo and you will see the DCIM folder again. Copy your old stuff back into that folder. You now have everything back.
