GPS on the diamond - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

I have igo installed on my diamond and it seems that the GPS position is updated every 1 second. Is this how it is or should it be 'real time'. The reason i ask is that i also have a lag issue(as highlighted in other threads) and since noticing that it only updates every second i thought that this could be the problem.
Thanks
Gary

Hi
1 second seems about right, I have Tomtom 7 running on mine and its only slightly faster than that

Cheers mate
How do you find the accuracy when using tomtom? Is there any lag issues or is it ok? Igo seems to be always playing catchup so if tomtoms better,i may switch.
Thanks again
Gaz

Hi, I've not used it all that much, but it managed to keep up when I was driving down the m4 motorway last week and get me to where I needed to go. Didn't appear to be any lag.

Do you know where I can download Tomtom 7 for free to my Touch Diamond?

Does the interface and TomTom lag affect only some series of Kaisers?

I know that it might sound like a mindless rant, but hear me out on this one please.
There is a thread in the TyTN I section and there are entries in the wiki which suggest that different series of Herms had different problems. There also seem to be different Kaisers out there that have different hardware and have more or less lag. Unwired4 is trying to link that to the VSBenchmark score, while I hope that it can be linked to the series number.
The serial number seems to be in format of HTnnn??nnnnn XTnn where ?? are letters and n's are numbers. The wiki entry only uses the HTnnn part, and I believe that the XTnn part is probably the country or area or factory or something, but could be useful if included.
As for definitions of what is laggy and not laggy performance, which is hard to define, the following videos will be good:

Laggy TomTom (also not laggy TomTom on a Magician)
If you do not use TomTom, please state that. I am not sure if CoPilot has the same problems or not.
Also, please note that the issue discussed in this thread is not the lack of drivers or slow video playback. And please compare your Kaiser to the ones in videos, as it is crucial that we use some standards of measuring "lag", as it is basically measured by the rule of the thumb to build some statistics and possibly find out which series are affected by the issue. We are not trying to link the "level of happiness" to the serial number like some peopl pointed out in the "gruesome" thread, as it involves too many factors such as expectancies, value, money paid, comparison, and specific usage of the phone. Also, if you had the motherboard replaced and your device performs better now, but still has the old SN, please state the way it performed before the fix.
The SN is written under the battery, and it might also be a good idea not to show the last 5 digits of the main section of it.
I will start with the branding, my own SN, country of origin, date of purchase, presence of lag.

Well, the device I have was purchased in early December, but that was in a small city in eastern Russia, so it is most probably from some early series.
I remember your thread about the fact that your Kaiser performs fine when it comes to GUI, and it was probably the first time I realised that there are some series that are just plain slow and the ones that are more or less fast. DO you use TomTom? If you do, does it perform like the Magician, or like the Kaiser in the famous video?

No lag on either
FWIW, I made a video of my phones performance in responce to yours. Sorry about the poor quality, but you can see the performance difference!
Mine performs more like the Magician and if you watch the thing thorugh, you can see my screen switch rate is substantially faster than yours. Hopefully from that video you can see why until I saw yours I was thinking that people were moaning over nothing and asking the question "How much quicker do you want it?!"
I'm certainly with you in thinking there is something to the build version and the fact that o2 UK held back on launching their Kaiser varient for a couple of months!

Thanks for the input
And your Stellar really does does work better than my TyTN, so far we can assume that 735 and 736 series are faulty and 748 should be ok
A bit too early to draw conclusions though
I picked up a tytn II (kaiser) today. I charged for about 5 hours. picked up my location with seconds with tomtom. but updating is real slow!

HT735
Up to 1 second to orientate screen.
Tomtom no sign of the lag.
However the above is variable. Regardless of running programs, the screen rotate can vary from virtually instant to 3 seconds.
Tomtom on a rare occassion will appear to completely freeze and then jump. But I think that's likely more to do with dropping a satellite or two. Otherwise I have not had the slow re-draw or laggy behaviour (per the utube videos)
So yes, a bit too early, but worth gathering more data. Perhaps it's not the serial that's the key but qualcomm batch numbers. Then again we are talking dozens of variables here.

Its unlikely this is the problem, I had a nokia running tom tom and no such problems. The Kaiser has a very good GPS chipset and Tom tom should cope.
I do think all the HTC plugins and and all the gimmick touch flo stuff is a large part of the problem. It looks like on mike processor usage is very high.

Yep, now it seems that even the same devices within a series perform differently.
That is an interesting observation =)
My switching isn't as slow as some videos, but no where near as fast as the one you provided (running stock AT&T rom).
I haven't fully tested GPS Nav yet. I got Destinator on the way (I heard it's a pain to use, but it apparently has the best and most updated maps of Mexico )
But in general video playback, NES and SNES Emulators has its ups and downs. Sometimes running smoother and others running choppy compared to my old PXA255 / 64 RAM ipaq wm5 ppc which still lies around.

Mike, I notice you say your on the o2 network. Do you have the Stellar or an unbranded Kaiser?
Maybe you blew the HT735 theory out of the water, but the one about the Stellar being better could still be valid....
I have an O2 XDA Stellar and I've been doing a few quick tests this morning and I've come up with this.
If there are programs running in the background, the portrait-landscape switch takes about a second. Switching back to portrait takes just a bit longer (going back to portrait always seems to take longer)
However, if I close all programs beforehand, the switching from portrait to landscape is practically instant with only a slight delay switching back. It is worth noting at this point that I have the sound disabled for the screen switching.
Tomtom is smooth in both Portrait and landscape modes and a video compressed in MP4 format at 320x240 plays perfectly.
BUT, I have also noticed the intermittent audio lag problem while playing music on it (regardless of player used) and a very definite stutter in either ringtones or text/email alerts. This makes me think that perhaps that when the audio hardware is initializing to playback, it may be hogging the cpu slowing the rest of the device down which could be contributory to some of the issues noted in this forum.
I'm not suggesting that the audio bug is responsible for all of the Tytn II's issues but, in my case, it certainly looks like it's playing a part in it.
Anyone else come across this?
Slow Rendering TomTom
I think it is worth pointing out that TomTom is a lot quicker & smoother if you remove all of the POIs.
I realised this when installing it on a friends symbian phone & wondered why it was so much faster than my "powerful Windows Mobile device". I didn't put the POIs on because the MMC I was working with only had enough room for the Speed Cams.
Now I keep all of my POIs on my MicroSD in a seperate folder close to the map folder so, before I plan a journey, if I need a POI I will just copy the 2 required files into the Map folder before starting up TomTom. The difference is quite massive if you ask me.
Maybe you are already aware of this, and I apologise if this is old news, but it seems people are still having problems with lagging & I don't, so thought this might help. Granted, having all of the POIs on (or as many as it will allow you to use at any one time) is useful if you're in a hurry, but IMO you pay a high price for that convenience in lagging video rendering.
I have tried it without the Speed Cams too & it's even better, but I cant do without those warnings on there, so I can deal with a slight loss in performance for the sake of them.
Give it a go and see what you think. If this was unknown until now, I think you will be pleasantly surprised!
NOW LETS GET THESE VIDEO DRIVERS SORTED!
really really really laggy switching.
Tomtom is somewhere in between the two videos.
Mine's a UK O2 XDA Stellar with stock ROM.
HT743G0 USA AT&T Tilt
Early November 07
mild lag switching, no lag on Tomtom.
The lag is contributed to the ROM you have and how many software you've installed. The original AT&T ROM lags BIG TIME like in this video. I was pissed. Then I flashed the ROM to Alex's clean multimedia. After I flashed the ROM I was so amazed at how fast it switches. It switches the screen just as fast as this video After the flash, I started to install tons of software. So far I've intsalled about 116mb of software into the phone with 36mb free. Now the switching takes about 1-2 seconds each way. I can live with that but not no 3-5 second lag.
As for TomTom (version 6.010 US and Canada map) I dont have the lag. But when it's turning I get tearing once in a while, the same tearing during video playback.
HTC737GB
T-Mobile Vario III
Lags in everything, today, switching, TomTom (You've all seen my video!)
Today it's taking 7 seconds to rotate! :S

Call Minute and SMS counting today plugin

I used to use a Hermes with WM5 on it and I used to use DKToday to on my today screen. I have since acquired a Kaiser with WM6 and DKToday seems to be having issues. It randomly loses lines from its display and wont even show up in Pocket Plus.
Does anyone know of a today plugin which will display used minutes (and maybe SMS) that works in Pocket Plus?
Thanks in advance

Me too Phonedashboard though the SMS counting does not work on my TyTn II. But otherwise good for keeping a record of your call time.

I like the look of PhoneDashboard, but didn't know Battry Status did this. Already had that one installed, but was just for monitoring the battery. Had to uninstall it, remove registry entries and re-install, but working like a charm now.

I settled on LCMinutes, just because it takes up a really small amount of today screen real estate.

Was very odd, I couldn't even get that one to appear in my today screen. I run most of the stuff in PocketPlus, but I test them actually on the today screen before doing that and it was just not there.

GPS - slow refresh

I tried my Tilt with iGuidance and got very disappointed. The GPS has an issue following my position. It updates the position on average every 30 sec and by the next update I can really get off the quided track.
Other people tell me that something is wrong, as the arrow on the screen should be following me smoothly in real time, not jumping city blocks. The only configurable setting for the GPS is baude rate, but I tried all values and still the same. What could be the problem?

are you in the city with a bunch of tall buildings??
also d/l htc gps and see how many sats your locked on.
I was mostly in the city, but no tall buildings. The GPS can lock me really good and fast, the reception is good, it finds like 8 sattelites. The only problem is it does not stay continuously locked on position, but lockes every 30 sec or so..
I installed the logging tool and will give it a try. Thanks!
What ROM and Radio do you use? stock?
I am using The NoThrills ROM (CE OS 5.2.19170 (Build 19170.1.0.0)), which comes with R 1.58.26.20.
Just tried the HTC GPS tool - not sure what exactly to look for, but it keeps logging very fast, the lines in the logger change at a rate e few per seccond, it always showed 7-8 satellites locked and yet did not update my position in real time, but probably every 30 sec.

If you are using Iguidance 4 then this is a know issues with the GPS chip in the tilt. It will not work right, the only work around is to use a separate bluetooth GPS reciever and not the internal gps. The other way is to use a different GPS software as Iguidannce 4 is the only one that I'm aware of that has this issue....
Yes, I am using iGuidance 4. Where did you see about the issue it has with the Tilt? Can you post some link? I can see only positive feedback. Would be good to know that it is a software issue and not my Tilt.....
Hi, I use miomap. My GPS is not smooth too. I don't need to wait 30 seconds to update the position, but it may need 3 to 4 seconds to update the position. It is not as smooth as tomtom.
Check out a program called GPS Gate. This issue typically has to do with WM6.1 and iGuidance 4.0 not playing well together on the Tilt. GPS Gate reports the GPS feed into something that iGuidance 4.0 can be happy with. Here's another thread for more details...

I think it depends upon the radio a lot. Some radios are very quick (I am currently using NIKI XX.17 as I need quick GPS locks - now takes seconds not minutes), others are not.
When I first got my kaiser, T-mobile vario III the GPS was very quick to get a fix taking less than one minute to get the first fix after boot up and subsequently a matter of a few seconds.
Unfortunately this was about the only thing that was quick though, so I installed one of Dutty's ROMs which vastly improved the overall performance of the device for most tasks, except getting a GPS fix which all of a sudden was intolerably slow, sometimes almost impossible.
I experimented flashing various radios but nothing seemed to make much difference so I kind of gave up. The other day I upgraded again, to Dutty's latest ROM and all of a sudden my GPS performance is back to how it was when I first got the kaiser, despite the fact the radio version included in the rom is the same as the one I had before. So I'm very pleased about this, but also perplexed. I don't know what factors influence the speed of getting a GPS fix but for me Dutty's latest ROM is good so maybe you should try that.
One thing that I did notice is that getting a GPS fix was always quicker when travelling in the car not standing still.

Which is strange... Normally GPS's are quicker to fix when stationary rather than moving...
I'll be getting mine soon, so once I have it, I will test with the T-Mobile standard and - if I get it installed, being a WinMob n00b myself that is by no means certain! - with Dutty's latest...

It is strange isn't it? But I'm sure it was true in my case. For example I once walked to work with the GPS switched on as a test, I was holding it in my hand so it had a direct line to the sky at all times. When I got there about fifteen minutes later it still hadn't got a fix. The next day I drove somewhere and after about two minutes it had a fix.
As long as I'm outside (or in the car) under clear sky, I get a lock in Google Maps or Telenav in only a few seconds. Inside my apartment, but near a window, Google Maps will eventually get a lock, but it can take it 3-5 minutes to do so. In my office, which also has a window but which faces out to a courtyard surrounded by brick walls (and up 5 stories above my floor), I just cannot seem to get a fix at all.
Outside with clear sky above though, moving or stable, it is very quick - never more then 10s and usually far less.
What kind of buildings and other obstructions were around you? In order to get enough fixes to pinpoint your location it will often have to see sats out to some pretty steep angles. One guy we met who does commercial GPS systems showed us where the birds were from out on a beach. The 4th one was only something like 20 degrees above the horizon out over the ocean.

Amazed of the GPS

I just wanted to say that the GPS in the Diamond is one of the better I have ever used.
I am now running the .08 radio ROM and the GPS Fix is under 20 sec.
But, thats not all. Now I also got FULL GPS reception in my VW Multivan.
Some of you maybe think.. "ehhhh.. whats so amazing ´bout that??"
Well, my car got this special windscreen that F**k up the reception of GPS´s and mobile phones.
I think that I have tried 4-5 different GPS devices (pocket pc´s, tomtom´s, garmin etc)
and I had to add an external antenna to get a good reception.
But I tried my diamond yesterday, and I got FULL reception with the diamond in the same position on my dash. (in under 20 secs of course =) )
So.. GO HTC.. GO GO GO!! =)
lol! it seems that you and me have some special diamond. using iGO8 and driving a Peugeot 207S with the same type of windscreen. even my athena has a hard time with finding satellites....the diamond is "on" in under 1 minute!

time management at his best!
I'm still impressed with mine when I manage to get a signal indoors with no windows around
I love my GPS too. We need more posts like this. It's so easy to critisize a few weaknesses, but this is a masterpiece of a telephone with such amazing features despite such a small size.
confirmation
I can only confirm that the GPS in Diamond ist the best one I ever had.
Total connection in less than 20 Seconds (sometimes even in only 10 Secs).
I think, there is no other device with such abilities.
Due to my job, I have to use it more than 10 times a day for various address and I can only say, it works really very reliable. I use íGO 8.
To get TMC-Information I use additionally at the same time also an another TMC-GPS-Device (GNS 5840). They work great together. GNS-5840 ist very cheap to buy it as used and delivers ony the TMC-Signals.
All in all a wonderfull device without any problems. Simly amazing.
Yeh, same for me too... very rare mine takes more than 30 seconds for a fix... no matter the app I'm using, or where I am. Even indoors, I quite often manage to get a fix.
Remarkable piece of kit.
Not only me then =)
Finally I can remove that ugly external GPS antenna from my car.
right, the first time i tested GPS on my new Diamond I thought: wow, what is wrong here, this is too fast. But, no, it was working.
My previous phone was the Kaiser, and even with the old WM6.0 ROMs, it took much more time, not even to mention the WM6.1
Im seeing the same. Takes about 15-20secs to get a full lock. Seems to work all the time every time.
Similar thing here, upgraded to the .07 radio and things are much better! Lock in 15-20 seconds. I was walking down the central corridor of the hotel I was staying in at the weekend and it still managed a signal - ok so it was the top floor but still!
Now if we can have the same revalation about 3g performance
With the 1.93 rom mine stays like 30 sec to get signal... with the older rom 1.37 i think... it stayed like 10-15 seconds... but the lag was the same....
