May get shot down but here goes.... - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV General

I have just got a HTC Diamond, this is my first WM phone (had IPAQ –non hone in the past). I have spent the last few days reading many threads, on many subjects. I am now familiar the language used here i.e. cooked ROM etc.
My question is really can someone supply in a simple thread a quick 1-2-3 guide on how to start loading and trying different ROMS. i.e. Tools\Software required, how to backup original manufactures ROM, How to install new ROMs etc etc.
I have used the search button and found lots of info, much of which is not related to Diamond so not sure if it is relevant.
I may get shot don for this; however I am sure there are many people in the same situation as me, and with the popularity of the Diamond more to come.
Any positive feedback welcomed
D

Quick 1-2-3 guide:
1. Flash with HardSPL(IMO)
2. Flash with new ROM (Panoshas IMO)
3. Enjoy!! Beware fast moving Jewels after ROM update can cause injury

Start with this thread 2nd post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=400950
once you have a hardspl installed on your device you can flash any rom you like to try. (flashing hardspl causes your device to reset just like it is a new device.)
From this point you just need to read and learn from the link above.

If you really searched on how to load new ROMs onto the Diamond and couldn't find anything, check your vision. This link is posted in many threads:

Some help please

I've been reading and trying this for days with no luck. I've fully unlocked my wizard and I'm now trying to flash to the 318 rom. But I have no clue how to do it. Could someone walk me through ho to do it? Most of the flashing done thus far has been an EXE file or through DOS. I must be missing something simple.
please help

I followed that one already. That's how I unlocked it. But all step 3.8 says is "your ready to flash...". Right now I don't understand exactly how to flash and I'd prefer not to "trial and error" it.
However, this morning I did open up the Hypercore kitchen and I think I'm on the right track. I'm at work so I can't try anything but I've printed up everything in that thread including all it's links and I'm going to give it a go once I get home. I'll report back once that's done.
Alright, after some more research and reading in the hypercore kitchen thread and all it's links, I think I may have it figured out.
I download and extract the files for the ROM I want, in this case 318 8.1 from theloon.
I then follow the instructions linked int he hypercore thread with dumping, and the pkgtool, buildos, etc.. If followed correctly, my wizard should be flashed with the new rom correct?
A confirmation would be nice. Any other comments you have are a bonus.
Another question though; what's the difference between the programs contained in the SYS and OEM folders compared to the ones in the build OS that i have the select? Aren't the ones in the folders already included in the ROM?
Your help would be greatly appreciated. I don't get confused too easily so as you can imagine i'm quite frustrated. I used to flash new versions and programs to my Razr but it was nothing like this.
dont get me wrong are you trying to cook your own rom, because hypercore is a kitchen, i suggest you download one of the roms that are made by reputable cooks, like the NBD series, TNT series, paradox, xmr, faria's, ingenetics, octavio's they differ in the apps and costumization included in the os and the builds, so just select download and flash
there's an executable file inside the roms once you unzip it and be careful if your using xp or vista
The only things I've been working with up until this point is BuildOS and nb2nbf. I haven't fully grasped the definition of "cooking" yet; whether it means altering files for my self or if the BuildOS selection list is considered cooking.
I think i was trying to do too much and using a file different from the one being referenced in the tutorial was a bit confusing. So to start, I decided to use Faria's Crossbow and the tutorial that came with it. It was very easy and I was able to flash my Wizard to that ROM without a problem. But the one i really want is Theloon's 318.
So, based off of what I learned last night I figured I just needed to replace the OEM, ROM, and SYS folders that came up when I unzipped Faria's crossbow with the ones from 318. Is this correct? Because I just tried that this morning and I get all the way to the CMD prompt right before it opens nb2nbf and it gives me an error (see attacment). If there's one thing I've learned from all these bricked devices floating around, it's to NEVER proceed when an error occurs.
What does this error mean? How can I fix it? Is my moving of the folders wrong? What am i missing?
just messin around trying to see what tools work, i got another error.
Ok, now I've got a bigger problem. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong. It's actually a lot simpler than I thought. i was just making it more complicated. Ok, I tarted the flash and at about 47%, it gave me a memory reference error. Now my Wizard won't go past the three-color screen and all it shows is my IPL/SPL 3.08. ActiveSync won't detect it, tried hard resetting, turning on while holding camera button, etc. What do i do now?
Now you start thinking... "Maybe I should have read the stickies on the Upgrading forums... bummer..."
The 3 color screen is called the BootLoader. As long you get that screen, your phone can be recovered. How to recover it?
- Use a Windows XP PC.
- Download Wizard_Love Rom (its somewhere, use google or search the forum, but then again, you wouldn't be having this problems IF you knew how to use the search button!)
- Press and hold CAMERA button and hit the reset, keeping the camera button pressed.
- Connect the Wizard to your pc using the USB cable.
- Start the Wizard_Love RUU utility that comes with it.
- Just press next until it starts flashing the ROM to it.
- Pray for it to finish without touching anything until the RUU says CONGRATULATIONS.
There... your phone is working again.
READ THE STICKIES BEFORE DOING ANYTHING AND USE THE SEARCH!
THIS QUESTION HAS BEEN ANSWERED FOR TOO MANY TIMES ALREADY!!!
PS: Maybe we should create a thread for helping the guys that don't follow stickies or care about the ALREADY info we have here... something like:
- 3 color screen: do this
- different IPL/SPL G3 on a G4 device: you are screwed.
I definately read the stickies over and over again. I've got a stack of printouts sitting in front of me that I've been reading for the past week.
I understand your frustration about questions like this but that's no reason to be rude. I used to be a moderator on pbnation.com so I know exactly how you feel. But the fact of the matter is that I'm not as familiar with these things as you are. I fixed the bootloader issue before I even read your response. i found the answer by re-reading one of my printouts that said the re-flash with official rom. So i did that and it worked. I knew I'd get flamed for posting but since I had already had a thread created, I figured it wouldn't hurt to post updates on my status.
I know how to flash roms now. It's actually quite easy. However, I ran into some issues that I'd like to explain in hopes that you realize I'm not taking advantage of you or not utilizing the tools and stickies.
i was having problems yesterday because of my work computer (I think). When extracting the files from Hypercore, they were not placed where they should have been and the tools wouldn't work properly. An example would be when opening buildOS it would give me the yes or no prompts. An IT friend allowed me to use his non-work laptop to do the exact same thing and I was able to use it without a hitch. The simple tmobile official rom update wouldn't even work on my work computer. So it's not just me.
I knew there was a reason that i couldn't follow it.
Regardless of your approach, I still thank you for your help.
I didn't mean to be rude... sorry about that. Its just that from your post count I thought your were like a newcomer like those that come here all the time, asking the same questions over and over again. Netherless, sorry for "helping" you the way I did.
I will have some tea now to relax care to join?

n00b questions

Hi,
I just got a Titan with Sprint and have tons of stupid questions. Is there a category in here where people won't mind me asking my questions? I'm new to mobile in particular, mobile windows, mobile devices but not new to windows and linux in general on desktop. So I have questions about imaging my device, cooking my own roms (for instance I've gotten my grubby little hands on the 3.16 GPS/EVDO revA test rom), recovering from disaster, etc before I start messing with and bricking my device. I want to make sure I can recovery after installing Google's android for example as I'm sure I'll probably kill it many times trying.
Thanks,
Chris
when i got here pre getting a wallaby i never even used a pocketpc before
was here for a long while before getting one
general pc knowlage and mainly pc knowlage
made it possible for me to help others who had pda's
before i got one myself
well that and reading other peoples posts
in general people dont mind any questions - no matter how "stupid" as long as you have taken the time and effort to search first.
There are many guides already posted on how to cook roms. This is not a simple task so take things one step at a time.
nose>grindstone
OK, thanks for clarifying. I guess I have two main generic questions to start.
Before I get started, what is the best way to create a complete backup image of my current setup? I've tried to find this out but I keep only seeing things about sprite backup and/or active sync but I suspect I need something else. I recall something about scraping a rom off your device but they didn't go into details. Plus I'm not very clear about the boot loader. Do I need to modify the boot loader and if I do will that screw up my chances of trying other things like Google's Android linux or other cooked windows mobile roms?
Lets assume I can figure out how to use a rom kitchen or whatever other tools I'll need to customize a rom to my liking, I get the feeling I shouldn't just dive in and start modifying things "willynilly" as things will go badly. What do I need to be careful about modifying and what can go wrong? I've only briefly glanced over some rom cooking threads as I wasn't sure where to start and if the instructions are extremely device-model-"centric" or not.
I'm happy to read or follow howtos if I just get links. I don't expect anybody to walk me through stuff.
Thanks,
Chris
generaly the "stuff" is devided into 2 cats
the stuff you put om it
and the rom itself
if you have the rom file you got on the pda or download the rom version you got the 2th
the rom on your device is not enuiqe and is just the same as any other rom of the same version from the same provider in case you got a custom rom from a phoneoperator like orange or o2 or.....
first one is pretty much what activesync sync and a new phone or a phone with a new rom can get access to the same stuff when synced to the pc apart from the programs later installed though same goes for a pda upgraded to a later rom and later downgraded to an earlier rom
speritebackup and such backup programs does what activesync does plus auto reinstall programs manualy installed lated on

I really don't have a clue do I...

I have the Diamond and really like it but it is so slow as we know. I've trawled round the site but am a total noob to this. I read about hardspl (i think) and flashing roms and advanced config....I just want to speed up the device and dont know where to start. I've turned off all the whistles and bells and the handset is on Orange with a 1.37 ROM. Tried installing the advanced config. but it told me I need a newer framework thingy and now the icon is stuck on the device and I just want to throw it at the wall. I know you guys are busy as hell and that a total noob just kinda gets in the way but could someone just tell me what I need, where I get it and where I put it on the damn phone If someone can I'll get the Mrs to make you tea
Sorry guys but I have tried but am not that techy minded
Hey dude, don't worry.
Check this site out - http://modmydiamond.info/
Read through the radio and rom installation guides carefully. It's very easy to follow and you will have upgraded in no time at all. As for which ROM, I use Swift bl v.6. It's very stable and quick and includes adv config in it anyway. But there are many so check out the rom section of this forum and see what people say, same goes for the radios. Installing a new rom will wipe the data on your Diamond, so it should get rid of that icon problem anyway mate.
I don't know why noobs get such a hard time, this site can be bewildering due to the vast info presented and some of us don't have the time to trawl through it all - espically as lots of it seems so advanced.
Anyway, good luck.
I'll try to make it simple as I can, because just over a month ago I was a noob in the same boat as you... So I know the learning curve is pretty steep, but once you start plodding up it, it does level out.
BUT before you go any further, read and understand all of this very useful check list here...
Also, it'll help to keep this list handy throughout the procedures.
So, keeping it simple, go for HardSPL 1.24 from here. Flash 1.24 by following the instructions in post #1 of that thread... follow these instructions to the letter mind, that is the key!
Once you have your HardSPL successfully flashed, go get ROM 1.93.405.1_WWE from here.
This file is self extracting, and automates the flashing process, so all you have to do is follow the instructions given as it leads you through, and if in doubt, just re-read the two sets of the instructions I've pointed out to you (everything you need is in there).
Do all that precisely as instructed, and you'll be all tooled up with the latest and quickest standard HTC ROM for a UK device... Like you, I was on a UK Orange .37 ROM, and I found a welcome increase in performance when I went to .93
Ps, don't be put off by the RUU utility when you get to the page where it looks as if it's trying to update your current main rom with your radio rom... just keep on going, it isn't touching the main rom provided it is flashing only a radio... you'll see what I mean when you get to that stage.
Pps, I'm going to say it again... make sure you backup any very important data you may have on your phone... and ultimately there are no absolute guarantees when flashing devices, and you will see it many times written on this site that you can only get flashy with your device if you're prepared to proceed on this basis.
Otherwise Enjoy
Edit; oops, didn't see you there simcarloc... that's what my post was meant to look like before I got too carried away.
Take a look ath the Diamond Rom forum there are very good guide and step by step guides
Thanks guys, I'm going to have a look at what you directed me to this morning. I run a forum for a car club and I know when people first join up it can be hugely daunting and a tad scary, even with the best intentions noobs can get freaked out somewhat....cue me
Thanks for putting this in "laymans" terms for me as I think that is what noobs need first off and we'll pick the rest of it up as we go along, its not laziness on our part, personally I just had head data overload and was losing the will to live I'll go look at the stuff you've posted and let you know how I get on.
Once again thanks for taking the time out to explain in a language I may just be able to get my head round Thanks guys.
One quick Q....runn diamond-sspl.bat? How and where is this?
Its not playing
Probably my fault but all I get is..
There is no application associated with "diamond-sspl" or whatever folder I try, it keeps telling me to run the app first, but I have no idea what I'm doing now. Also tells me the framework isn't present. No idea.
Guess I'll be sticking with a slow device Thanks anyway guys
Hey there LoudyMcLoud,
Like you I am somewhat of a noob too…
But since you have a problem I encountered before (framework issue) I might be able to help you out in this first stage.
My device kept giving the message that my Framework was not up to date when I wanted to install a program. I went to search for the latest framework version at MS, and found the latest (beta) release. I installed that, and then I got the message that my framework was a newer version then needed…. Ahhh help me god.
So I took the easy way out, a hard reset did the trick for me (press and hold volume down + centre button + the soft reset button located in the stylus opening)
Remember, this procedure too, will wipe all date from your device, it will restore itself to the way it was when you first bought it.
Maybe after this you can use the steps mentioned earlier in this thread.
Good luck with your Diamond.
Just install the latest .net framework from microsoft that is NOT the Beta version - can't remember the version number, but this worked for me.
Good job,... hope you will get the rest sorted

It's in the zip file you should have already downloaded here.
Extract all files in this zip file to their own folder, make an activesync connection with your diamond, then away you go. (For starters I recommend you choose HardSPL 1.24 when prompted.)
Latest .net is 3.5 available here.

Need help on loading Zannytech ROM onto my HTC Touch HD!!

Hi there, just need a bit of help on how to load the Zannytech ROM onto my HTC Touch HD. Can someone give me the link to the RAR file to download so then I can extract it - because I don't really know which one to download, or any instructions please? Many thanks!!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=594151
No need to create a new thread, just read the first page in the forums, 2 different roms listed for XannyTechROM. Instructions for each one listed inside the thread.
You need to read this for the steps in order to flash. If you have any further questions, please post them in that thread as this one will be closed soon.
The download links are all on the XannyTech thread (normally in one of the first 3 or 4 posts). There are 2 versions (28014 with bottom start menu buttons and 21885 with start menu button at the top), with 3 variations of each (a- Non HTC Messaging, b- with HTC Messaging, c- with HTC Messaging and MSVC (Microsoft Voice Command)), so I really don't know what your preferences are. You will need to read the threads to decide which version and which variation best suits your needs
Check this blog
Hi there,
if you are having trouble upgrading to a custom ROM, as well as following both xmsnx and ClydeB1's advice, I would also suggest that you check out the following blog i discovered, so you can fully understand and appreciate the whole flashing concept, including the risks involved. It's a very easy guide to follow and it tells you pretty much everything you need to know to perform the whole flashing process in detail:
http://journal.zenyee.com/2009/06/21/custom-rom-upgrade-for-dummies/
You can backup your phone data (use PIM Backup) before you flash to a custom ROM so you can avoid losing data, i.e. Contacts, etc...
Good luck!
Solution found, thread closed. In future post in relevant rom thread for rom related queries

Help.. I f..... up.. again :)

I am trying to get the cool 4 shortcut buttons and was directed to something called Cookies Home Tab. I installed it but no program showed up.
I would then try and uninstall it an install it again with sense deactivated, but when choosing uninstall on the program (which shows up on the "remove program" menu, but not in the start menu) the "busy-cursor" is just rotating and nothing happens. I tried powering off and try again, and the same thing happens: It says its uninstalling, but it takes forever and nothing happends.
Can someone help? How do I get the program properly installed. I am running a danish original rom and assumed it would be compatible when directed there. I am not sure where to find my sense version. Can it be that its 2.16xxxxx or is that windows?

If you cannot find your manila version, or at least search on how to find it, you really need to learn more before you mess up your phone.
I assume you did a hard reset after your registry issue. If not I suggest you do as you will probably have to do it a few times as you attempt to customize your device.
Your manila version can be found in Settings\Device Info\Software Info.
Read the thread on Cookies Home tab for compatable versions and install instructions. Post your questions there.
p.s. Thanks for implying...
I am really sorry for sounding like a total noob, but I DID read the post, installation instructions and whats not. I also read the "how to find your manila version" which also said to go to settings tab - device info - software info. The thing is that its danish on my phone and I cant find anything called device info on my tab, only "about" which leads me to a webpage with a lot of copyright and legal mumble jumble.
When going to settings - advanced - about the device I get a tab called version, where it says Rom Version 2.16.403.1 (67041) dan. But I dont know if thats it.
But lord, how many original stock roms can there be? Its a pretty new phone and I installed every HTC update available to me. I must say that configuring this little diamond seems to take a rocket scientist or above. I can use a computer pretty well, but getting a little modifications to the HTC UI seems to take a phd
You seem like a nice guy, and I would like to learn. Maybe you can help me out so I dont have to ask so many noobish questions. I really tried to learn by myself but it is a new world to me and it is quite overwhelming.
1) I read that installing a rom is ireversible. Does that really mean that I under no circumstances can replace the original software? Is a cooked rom really a whole other OS and replace windows mobile 6.5 completely? Or is it just a modified windows?
2) What is the distinction between HTC Sense, Touch Flo and Manila, if any? As far as I read the black and white icons is manila and the colored ones is sense... Is that true? And does that mean that I cant use any programs that needs manila to run if I have the HTC Ui with the colored icons?
I hope the above questions helps me to a basic understanding, so I further on dont have to ask so many questions.
PS) after installing TD2 tools my screen rotation line in my system registry came back, and I got rid of the landscape.. Thats one problem solved. Call recording aswell. If I find a way to get these 4 shortcut-buttons available and set one of them to my to-do list I think Im done.. No more tampering.. I promise.

1) What exactly is the difference between installing Cookies Home tab and installing another rom? As I understand it, a rom is a whole other OS, where this software only is a skin? Correct?
Correct, The ROM is the whole OS, where CHT is a modification to the Sense (Manila) UI.
2) I read that installing a rom is ireversible. Does that really mean that I under no circumstances can replace the original software?
No, You must first install hard SPL to be able to flash a cooked(custom) ROM.
Once you install HSPL, your device is considered "out of warranty".
However you can reflash a Stock ROM and then reflash Stock SPL to return the phone to the factory state for warranty purposes. So it can be reverted.
3) What is the distinction between HTC Sense and Manila, if any?
They are one and the same, also referred to as Touch Flo 3D (TF3D)
4) The original question about getting Cookie to work, if someone feels like helping.
If you have installed Cookie's Home Tab and soft reset, when you are on your home screen you should see the flip clock (assuming that in Settings\System\Home\Items is set to HTC Sense), on top right of that is a little dash, this opens up additional panels for your shortcuts.
There should also be a new program possibly in settings or \Programs\Tools called CHTEditor to access your tab settings.
I suspect that it installed, you just didn't know how to access it.
Lemme know.

See above for answers. One quick word of advice; If the program interfaces with your today screen, phone functions, etc. install to device memory and never to Storage Card. Programs that just tweak the registry and settings can be installed to SD card.
Uhm, and I wouldn't be promising anything because its addicting. Once you pop, you can't stop!
Sorry.. I edited my post while you were answering. I found the preguide to roms which was just about basic enough to enlighten me. Your answers helped a lot to, and everything fell into place.
I do think that I will stay away from flashing as it seems like risky business.. The option to hard-reset without to much hassle seems like the emergency brake I like available to me
At the moment I am trying to reinstall Cookies Home Tab, but the installation just hangs.. Probably because it wasnt uninstalled correctly. Any tips other than Hard Resetting which means several hours of setup
Edit: Ahh f... it.. I may aswell do it.. All the tampering made my phone slow anyway.. Now I know what I need and can get it to work without too much experimenting..
Thanks dude.
I did some research on your stock ROM and it looks like you are running Manila 2.1 which is the older version so many tweaks you are attempting may be for 2.5.
You would be better off changing ROMs.
Here is a download of our stock ROM for warranty purposes, keep it just in case. You may have to register for the site, but you may also find a nice cooked ROM in your language on that site. Dutty is a great chef and I use his ROMs because of their stability.
I can attempt to walk you through HSPL, but there have been many issues lately. Almost seems like the only way to get it to work is to "donate" to the developer.
Okay Mr Dope Pusher.. i see where you are going.. Telling me to stay away from these sheningans and 1 hour later you got me hooked anyway
Jokes aside.. Yes.. I Do think I am gonna need some help here.. While the stock backup rom is downloading I will try and find out for myself, but I would very much like some confirmation on what to do before I take the leap.. Stay tuned and thank you very much.. Your help is very appriciated.
I have a question though.. Now I downloaded the stock rom, but what if my phone breaks when Duttys Rom is installed.. Then I wont be able to reinstall the original rom before sending it in for repair. And then Im screwed warranty wise, right?
..., in anticipation of your next question;
As long as you have over 50% battery and do not interupt the flash (unplug the USB) there are very few chances of it bricking.
I have never had it happen and most errors are correctable with a hard reset. It really sounds worse than it is.
Most devices get bricked because the user attempts to flash a cooked ROM w/o HSPL or a ROM or radio from another device.
I have attached 3 files.
Do the following after you download these files;
1. Remove your SIM and SD card.
2. Sync your device to your PC through Active Sync or WMDC depending on your windows version.
2. Copy the enablenewrapi.cab to your device through file explorer and install
to device memory.
3. Open both the SPL 1.83 and the RUU zip files and place contents of both into a new folder.
4. Run the RUU.exe and you should see a progress screen appear.
5. With any luck, you won't get stuck at 0% and the flash will complete.
As the screen states, it may take up to 10 minutes. You will see your device disconnect from active sync, which is normal. Let it run until it completes and do not open anything or let your PC go into standby. Also, you may want to disable your AV and any firewalls as these can mess with the installation.
Make sure you have greater than 50% battery before you attempt this as any interuption during the flashing process can brick your device.
If the steps above complete, you can go into bootloader mode by holding down both volume keys right after you hit the soft reset buton, but before the device begins to boot. You may have to try a couple of times if you are not fast enough. Or you can power off the device then hold both volume keys and press the power button. In bootloader mode which is a tri colored screen, you should see SPL: 1.83.Olinex, then you will know it has installed correctly.
From this point, you are able to flash any cooked Topaz ROM.
The ROM flashing process is the same as HSPL in regards to placing the ROM's .nbh file into the same folder as the custom RUU.exe, so keep that RUU.exe file for future use.
You need only flash HSPL once to continue to flash as many ROMS as you like.
If you ever have to revert to stock, you would install the ROM you downloaded, then find the StockSPL file from the HSPL thread and follow the instructions.
Always hard reset after you flash a new ROM.
**If you are not successful in flashing HSPL, you will need to go to the HSPL thread and read up on opening a ticket with HTC Support, which will give you an autoinstaller that will work once you donate through the program. I believe they are asking for 4gbp.
Ok.. And one of the above files is the Dutty Rom? Edit: Oh I se.. It isnt.. I will download it then..
Will it look and feel similar to Sense, just with more features and customisation options?
You write: Most devices get bricked because the user attempts to flash a cooked ROM w/o HSPL or a ROM or radio from another device.
Can you please elaborate? I understand it like you need to make sure I install the hspl first before cooking, but "radio" from another device. Please explain it for a dummy as me, so I dont attempt to do it by accident.

No, I have not provided you with a ROM, just the HSPL unlocker.
You can go to HTCPedia and search for a Danish ROM with manila 2.5, or take a look through the ROM development thread and find one from another chef. It should have Sense installed but 2.5 unless it states otherwise. 2.5 has more features and functions and is the most current.
Many ROMs are multilanguage so I believe you select your region language when the ROM first loads. Just look for one that supports DAN. I use WWE (World Wide English) so I am not experienced with multilanguage variations.
Just make sure your HSPL is successful before you attempt to flash a ROM.
If you search hard enough you may even find a ROM with CHT cooked in which will alleviate you from having to install it yourself, but I suspect that your previous install didn't work because your on Sense 2.1
I have never used CHT, but use Max Manila Themes which is just a different mod, but I am thinking about trying CHT.
I'll take a look and see what I can find.
Regarding Radios;
A stock ROM comes with the OS and Radio ROM.
Most cooked ROMs take just the OS and tweak it for best performance, adding programs, removing other useless programs and do not include the radio ROM, therefore you will still have your stock Radio unless you flash a cooked ROM that has included the radio (usually denoted in the title of the ROM by the radio#, i.e. 4.49.25.57 (which is a Topaz radio version)
The only time you can brick is you attempt to install a radio from another device (sometimes they work better) such as a Blackstone radio to a Topaz device unless your SIM is unlocked or attempting to flash a Topaz radio w/o HSPL.
Personally, there are enough Topaz radios posted in the radio thread that I don't need my SIM unlocked to try others.
Symptoms of a problem radio are poor signal strength, rapid battery loss and your device heating up.
I have switched my radio ROM a few times but honestly haven't noticed a difference from my stock radio.
The stock ROM you downloaded would replace your Stock Radio if you happen to flash to a different one.
Your region and carrier are also a factor in choosing a radio, so again, just stick to stock unless you have issues.
Dude.. That radio thingie made me EXTREMELY paranoid and I see that there is dozens of different roms from dutty and thousands of rom in general where many of them seems to come with radio-thingies... I am extremely afraid of choosing something that will brick my system, so please, please help me through this, even though you already have been extremely helpful.
If I were on my own, I would go with this:
http://htcpedia.com/duttys_topaz_wm_leo_r_rtm_e11d19c3e22de899a/soft/htc-topaz-rom.html
But to be honest I dont know if it will work on my device or if I will be able to get it with a danish language pack..
Please help me choose the right one.... I am ready to rock, so I hope for a quick reply, and I promise I will do a extra good deed tomorrow to repay the world for all the help you gave me tonight.

Don't sweat it Bro, if its posted as a Topaz ROM then its got the Topaz Radio, the only thing you risk is not being able to connect to certain 3G bands.
I've used Dutty's R-8 and its not a bad ROM, but its a little outdated and I didn't see that it had multi language support.
I am really having a hard time locating a Danish language ROM.
I find FRE. GER, ITA, ESN, NLD, WWE, but no DAN????
"I am really having a hard time locating a Danish language ROM.
I find FRE. GER, ITA, ESN, NLD, WWE, but no DAN????"
Then it aint just me being total clueless.. I cant find any either..
Im bafled by this world.. I basically have two modest demands: To record calls in mp3 and get easy access to my to-do list.. preferably on my homescreen, but just as good by one of the nifty Hotbuttons Ive seen in pictures..
To get those two modest demands fulfilled I either:
- Need to give up on my danish interface and crack my phone beyond warranty and a chance of bricking it.
- Disable HTC sense and go with WM interface
I know how limited I would be with any other phone, but this road I got myself on is really amazing

I found some Danish support threads, just search Danish Topaz in XDA and you may find something to load over a WWE rom.
Personnaly I think you will be disappointed if you do not take the plunge.
I had a Rhodium before my Topaz and once I go tmy Topaz, I couldn't stand it. It wouldn't do half the **** my Rhodium did. Because I had my Rhodium flashed to custom.
Finally HSPL was released and I flashed it immediately and can't believe I ever liked that other brick of a phone.
Take your time, get comfy with the process first, and read lots on the language packs.
The brick warning is just a disclaimer and it is very difficult to achieve if you follow the steps correctly.
I know these are expensive toys to take a chance on, but they really are only at 50% capacity out of the box. What a waste....
Bruce, dude, you're a saint. This is why so many folks look to xda for help. You should be commended, but probably won't be! You got my vote.

Thanks JD!
Is that commended or condemed???
Just trying to give a little back.
Greetz from SoCal.
I agree.. The helpfulnes here has been overwhelming, and has given me the bravery to try this out. But I am still very nervous.
Let me sum up what I learned from tonight.
1) When following your instructions I will have a phone which I can modify with custom roms.
2) As long as I am 100 % sure the rom is for Topaz I dont have to worry about messing up and bricking my phone due to doing wrong stuff to the radio-thingie? (yes, I still dont understand what that is)
3) I will be able to get back to factory defaults and warranty by installing the official rom you linked and afterwards install the original spl thingie afterwards?
4) Should I mess up and brick my phone, there is a fair chance of being able to restore it by the help of another device and a micro SD-card? (See I DO try and learn myself.. (Its probably incorrect though ))
5) I need to give up on the danish interface, but I will without too much hassle be able to get a danish keyboard?
6) To be absolutely sure not choosing a wrong ROM, please confirm this one as a possible choice: "Duttys Topaz HG R10 [5.2.23541.5.5.0]"
It is downloading and I am ready to take the leap... Geronimoooo!

Radio controls cell signal, GPS and WiFi connections.

Exactly.
5) I need to give up on the danish interface, but I will without too much hassle be able to get a danish keyboard?
Bingo!
6) To be absolutely sure not choosing a wrong ROM, please confirm this one as a possible choice: "Duttys Topaz HG R10 [5.2.23541.5.5.0]"
That's the one I am currently running. Great ROM!
