I am currently using an Hermes. I got a Titan (PPC 6800) a few months ago. It has the same Qualcomm chip (the 7200) found in the Kaiser.
I gave the TiTan to my son and kept the Hermes because it had better sound and better battery life. (I realize that the Titan is a CDMA device and may not have as much batter life).
Have any of you compared the Kaiser and the Titan?
Is the Kaiser really that much better than the Hermes? If so, why.
I'm trying to decide to get the Kaiser or wait for the Omni.

Well despite a slowness problem someone else has reported recently, mine is superbly fast compared with the Hermes. Instant power on from standby, quick opening of power hungry applications like tomtom etc etc. Brightness is better, feels better, better build quality. AND NO lockups and freezing so far - and that's a MAJOR plus in my book. No issues with freezing when on charge etc , in fact it's been so smooth for me that I have not been doing my regular backups (bad practice I know!).
I really am impressed by this device - not just the GPS, but mainly because of the reliability, speed and feel of it. So far as added potential for this device over the TyTn (GPS aside) I'm not so sure that there is a huge benefit, BUT it is a huge benefit to have similar functionality to the TyTn that actually works reliably and smoothly - I feel I can rely on this device where I would not give TyTn 100% trust. (I enjoyed finding work arounds and fixes for the TyTn and got it to a fairly workable state, but the Kaiser is much more of an out of the box working device I think). The one poor thing (so far) that I've found is the slow scrolling in PIE - but only PIE; this feels glitchier/slower refresh rate than the TyTn.
Whther you wait for the Omni is for you to check out
Mike
Mike:
Thanks for the reply. I would like a larger screen so I'm tempted to see if HTC comes out with the Omni Next month as planned. I'll probably end up with both devices.
Have you messed with the GPS yet? Can it work using Google maps without any other hardware or software? Just curious.
Thanks!!!
Just my 2 cents, I have the same raves about the Kaiser/TyTN II. Out of the box it is really hassle-free.
I share your complaint about pocket IE but I find this behavior only in PIE. If you install Opera mini, for example, web browsing is similar to an Iphone experience but much faster. No refresh just smooth/fast scrolling.
I hope MS gives us a major update to PIE soon, It really is starting to show it's age.

Yes, looks like Opera mini then. I tried it on my TyTn but generally preferred PIE layoutwise. It's just strange that PIE should be about the only thing I find slower on the Kaiser. In single column view it scrolls fine until you start to get further down a page and eventually it all but seizes up. Still, as you say Opera Mini is smooth scrolling, I'll be very happy with that.
Mike
It seems to be the best out of the ones I've tested, including deepfish which I'm not really impressed with.
There is also another browser that is rumored to be better than Opera mini. I believe it's called thunderhawk.

I'm running a Hermes on AT&T's network and a 6800 on Sprints EVDO rev. 0. Overall and in most places AT&T's HSDPA network is faster than the Sprint. I carried both phones for two weeks in Salt Lake City and surrounding areas.
The Sprint network had EVDO in more towns than AT&T had UMTS or HSDPA. However, I could get the AT&T signal and get on the web in more places than I could with the Sprint. Sometimes it's only Edge speeds but I could get on.
I ended up giving the Sprint Phone to my Son and keeping the Hermes and trying to decide whether to buy the Kaiser or not.
yeah, i've been damn near shocked at the speeds i've been getting on hsdpa in nashville vs. ev-do since i've gotten my kaiser on wednesday. but i know surfing in edge will drive me insane if i ever have to do it

I'm really close to ordering a Kaiser unlocked. Most of the Kaiser posts have been from people in Europe. Please give me a full rundown. I'm especially interested in how the gps works with google maps. Have you set it up and given it a whirl?
Also, surfing on Edge with the Hermes is not all that bad. It's funny because I go to some remote locations camping in Utah. Sometimes I can get an "E" or even a "G" signal and surfing isn't that bad while I lie in my tent at night. The fact that I can surf at all in such locations is amazing in and of itself. It down loads articles well but the pics take a few seconds more.
With the 6800, I can get a 1XRTT signal and can make a phone call, but I cannot get web access. With the AT&T service, it's hard to place a call in these remote locations but sending email and browsing the web works better. Go figure.

Just on the google maps part. It works well - but it tends (for some folk) to not wait long enough to acquire the signal before it times out. However there is an easy workaround:

I loved my Hermes after taking it to Black WM6, the Kaiser is just that much better, as stated already, it's solid, fast and the GPS rocks. I use Google Maps and iGuidance v4 and they both work flawlessly, even at the same time with active GPS. You won't be dissapointed, except for lower "in-call" volume in the BT headset (many have complained about this, others say it's OK)

This seems to be an initial, 1st time occurance. Once I had acquired a fix with another GPS app, Google maps worked fine. Now Google Maps works fine, even when I launch it by itself.

Thanks guys. I may have to order one. I have to buy my wife a new sewing machine first.
Well I've been playing with my Kaiser for a day now and on the whole I love the build quality and the extra memory and storage is a blessing.
However, I have major issues with the radio version.
It is dreadfully slow when the 3G signal is a just one or two bars - it often wont find an internet connection (things like the weather on the Home plug will not update) and I couldnt even make any calls for a while when the signal was low. I was tempted to switch to straight GSM.
Does anybody know of a good radio upgrade?
hi there,
Im currently a wizard user and i love it, only 2 drawbacks are Lack of GPS and a slow processor. Ive been reading up alot on the tilt lately and heres what i found...
1 - the video/graphics problem still exists
2 - Red Light of death is a COMMON problem
ill be buying this phone from ebay, and unlocking it for T-mobile (USA) since i wont be under AT&ts warranty, i have no way of knowing the RLOD will ever hit me.... so i cant exchange a dead kaiser/tilt
So i ask you tilt users to advise me...... thanks in advance
Will the data work on T-Mobile's 3G when they launch it this summer?
Is there any way to use the front facing camera (video call or some sort of messenger, whatever) on T-Mobile?
What about the push to talk- will that work on T-Mobile?
T-Mobile is so much cheaper than AT&T, and I really want a Kaiser, preferably an unbranded one with front facing camera...

Not a tilt user, mine is an o2 (UK) branded Kaiser. I was a HTC Universal user and loved that. What prompted me to upgrade (apart from the fact the upgrade was free!) was the intergrated GPS and larger memory. I'm very pleased with my little Kaiser in comparison to the size of the Uni and love having everything onboard.
But the million dollar question really is what do you use your Wizard for?
For me, it's a bit of Internet use (love Opera Mobile) over WiFi, ebook reading, PIM, MP3 player, email, skype over Wifi, gaming (but nothing much more intensive than solitaire). I use TomTom don't seem to suffer from the jerky graphics as much as others, and having the GPS onboard is priceless, cos I know that the 1 day I would really need it, I'd have left the external GPS at home with the Uni! I have watched some videos, but I've re-encoded them to a lower bitrate, yes the Kaiser does have issues with high bitrate video's. However on balance, the higher internal memory and integrated GPS means my Kaiser does everything my Universal did, only I don't have to worry about where I'm installing applications, or leaving things at home.
So whilst I am very happy with my purchase, I have noticed my device performs better than some at the tasks I use it for. So it's back to you to tell us what you want yours for!

Have they even confirmed with the rolling out of their "3g"?
well I use my phone for Im/Texting alot and GPS is another major application for me, I drive alot so its quite important for me, ofcourse at the end of the day im gonna use to make calls.
only thing im stuck on is wether i need the qwety keyboard or not
GPS is worth it
I use iGo 2006 and like it a lot. For me, the GPS is why the phone is worth it.
My complaints are that: the speakerphone is not good; the camera could be better and is useless in low light; no insurance offered by at&t; battery life, but I am used to it by now... needs a charge every few days or so depending on what you use (GPS will kill it quickly); the graphics problem is annoying, maybe programs like navigon would work smoothly but the phone is still worth it, I never use my video ipod to watch media because I don't like the small screen.
With WM6, I use SBSH software pocketbreeze for functionality and wisbar advance for looks. Most people care about the speed, but I'm happy with it. Oh yeah, Q-Mobile 1.2 has made the phone much more stable.
One last thing, I got mine for $75 after rebates but I would not have gone over $300. That's me though, some people have money and want a tech gadget that they can customize to their liking.
I upgraded to the Tilt from the 8125 a month ago and have been very pleased with my purchase. Obviously there will be risks of the thing bricking down the road, but you shouldn't let that scare you away from a purchase. If anything, that should be incentive for you to buy the HTC branded version of the phone and not the Tilt.
Just my opinion, but I would stay away from ebay too. The thought of buying fairly expensive electronics sight-unseen from an anonymous seller has always seemed kinda sketchy to me.
Love my tilt. The gps, 3G and faster processor was why i upgraded. I mostly use iGO , Flexmail, MSN, and Google Maps when I'm out. Sold my Wizard 8125 and picked up the tilt.... I have to say that i am very happy so far.
I've had the best phones of every carried in the MidEast area. Touch, Dash, BB Curve, MotoQ9h, and now the Kaiser. Its the best phone with the most available features. The ability to customize the phone in an endless number of ways makes this phones worth a lot more than it is. Even though the video displays aren't the best and worse than predecessors, its still a killer phone. Plus, you cant find a better community, in terms of developers and activity, than XDA. I say this because I was on a lot of there forums and I can say that the amount of intelligence here is amazing.
Get the kaiser and return it if your dont like it.

well almost everything one of those phones could offer me..listening to music on my way to work, browsing the web by wlan especially, watching some movies, use the calendar to be sure i dont loose any meetings, send tons of email and sms, all of those packed in a compact and user friendly device..s730 seems perfect except those bugs...

I love the s730... however, I wish I waited for the version that will be released with North American 3G support (well... i use TMobile, which doesn't have a 3G network in NA anyway, also nobodies sure which RF chipset is included in the WING220 anyway, so it may support 850/1900 HSDPA after all).
The video driver appears to be being worked on by HTC, although jockyw states it is in a different way than perfect.
Overall, I'm very happy with my S730, but if you're in North America, I'd wait for the model with support for the North American 3G frequencies. Otherwise, I strongly recommend the device. The WLAN support is fine. Video play back is fine, I use GSPlayer and Windows Media Player. Does your work use ActiveSync for mobile devices (do they support Windows Mobile devices)? If so, this will work fine. The only inescapable problem I have is that the Microsoft Bluetooth Drivers don't support **** for profiles (nothing to do with the phone though).
If you use Last.FM, you may want to check out the little PHP app I "created." Link in my signature \/. If you don't use it, you may want to start, it's awesome.

I must agree with bigflavor, except:
- I don't know anything about problems with 3G here in Europe. Everything works fine (doesn't mean there aren't any in the US)
- Video playback depends on format (and codec) of the file you want to play. Some of them are OK, some sucks. E.g. MP4 which is the output of built-in camera looks like a terrible slideshow.
- Generally I would say if you prefer to work, go and get it. If you prefer gaming & multimedia, don't

I have an s730 and n95-2. Both devices are great in their diff ways. If I had to chose between the two I would pick n95-2. It is quicker, more responsive, and for wifi it can't be beat. I do like my s730 tho. However it sometimes freezes, needs reboots and is slower in running thru the menus and also slower with wifi, not sure why. I have the option of using either one and go between both. I realize this being a winmo forum that nokia gets knocked a bit, but the n95 line is really very good IMHO and should be compared.
It is definitely worth buying. It is a very, very good smartphone. Yeah, there are problems, but an update is coming which should fix them. I have noticed one major problem only and three minor problems + few MICRO problems. The major problem - ram consumption. It is not THAT bad, OF COURSE, it even doesn't annoy. The only thing is that you see that there are 3 megabytes free from time to time. And sometimes an app won't launch so u have to open task manager and kill some apps. Minor problems - multipress timeout setting has no effect (i set it to 0.5s but it still timeouts in 1 sec). Second problem - included RSS hub app (which is super-cool!!) has a bug which doesn't let you set the refresh setting lower than 1h. Oh, and GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSPDA won't disconnect by itself even though idle disconnect timer is set to 30s! So u have to kill GSM data with comm manager . No video issues or whatsoever. Well, watching videos with WMP is LAGGY, but not with Core Player! Current video subsystem is not worse than that of Tornado, Vox etc. As HTC said, it need software optimisation so it would render the same way tornados, voxes did. ATI chip was not mentioned in specs. HTC would have to pay huge amounts of money to ATI for licensing just to enable it. Mentioning Qualcomm chipset doesn't mean that all the possible features, which all are licensed, will be available. Its like with windows versions: there are more expensive ones with more stuff enabled.
BTW, does anybody know if that update will include WM 6.1 which would be AWESOME?

Actually NO, it doesn’t! I allready did this stupid choice and now I'm crying for RAM and decent video.
And BTW, If you’ll compare it with iPhone which is in the same price segment, you’ll understand why I’m so disappointed. For this amount of money I’m tired to stay on internet, hoping for a solution. Go and spend 400USD for an iPhone which is now absolutely breakable for any GSM carrier and stay away from cares and interminable board discutions.

I completely disagree. iPhone is in a different class. It is better for multi-media, but has worse messaging, communications, phone-dialing functions. You cant use it with one hand, etc.
And even though S730 ati subsystem is not wired it doesn't mean that it should run slower than for example VOX did which doesn't even have a dedicated graphics subsystem (after upcoming software patch). So iPhone is not even an option unless you are absolutely dumb about what you want from a phone. iPhone is a toy, compared. A cool toy
If you're not sure between S730 and N95 then I would go with the N95, it's a much more 'refined' product and does the things that it does very well, whereas the S730 is potentially more powerful but it's a bit more rough around the edges, mostly down to the operating system.
Oh and the biggest difference is that S730 has a QWERTY keyboard whereas the N95 doesn't.

N95 has a bigger screen, but of same resolution. I used to have a N95-1 (first generation), and i didn't like it at all. It feels more like a simple nokia than a powerful smartphone. Contact searching sucks very, very hard (compared), emailing sucks too, internet browser renders sites worse, it IS laggy most of the time, slider mechanism wore out (became loose) very soon, note even talking about exchange "support", etc. On the good sides, it has standard headphones connector (HTC has a nice RM - W100/E100 remote music controller with 2.5mm port), it has sliding-out music controls, it feels durable (except the slider), it has a very good camera and a good look. I would definitely go with S730 though. It has it's flaws but i'm very happy with it.
The main difference is the keyboard. If you want to type some texts it's your phone. If not, N95 has GPS and better camera.
the new iphone 3g is here. i think im right in saying we all now it
but in the advert it claims to be the first phone to beat the iphone

nb. there isnt really a purpose to this thread it just marks as a discussion thread for those who want to compare
It's all about personal preference and what the users expect from their devices. Some will find one superior, some will prefer the other. Not much more to say, the rest is just marketing crap...

It doesn't. But even if I've had video call cameras on my phones for 2 years now I think I've used it maybe twice to give it a try at the beginning, same for my friends... so I'd say apple took a good decision not to add one and increase costs for a small percentage of people who actually use it.
iphone does have 3rd party stuff too. With the first one it was unofficial only, now it's official as well.
i bet you that the winmob 3rd party stuff can do a lot more than the iphons
Certainly. But still, the appstore claims having more than 500 apps for the iphone now at launch time. Already quite a bit, and the offer can only grow more. Of course WM has years of advance.
I still prefer WM for the "geek-friendly" hacks. Doubt we'll find some WMWifiRouter likes on the iphone soon.
To use the phrase "out perform" can be misleading. Can we just list what the iPhoney does, that the Kaiser cannot, and vise versa? If one does something "better" than the other, that doesn't count, because "better" can be subjective.
Can the new iPhoney tether, MMS, copy/paste, take movies, Open/Edit Office docs, open RAR/ZIP files, Off line maps&GPS, double as a card reader, and the MOST important to me can you run thousands of third party apps?
Now what can the iPhoney do the Kaiser cannot?

I really don't like apple at all. Their marketing/advertising team brain washes people to believe their products are far superior. its genius but they are just a buncha crooks IMO; You pay extra for the brand now. Don't get me wrong, they make fair products, but like what HTC did to us with the whole 3d driver deal, apple does that every day with all their products b/c they are clever enough to lace pop culture, hipster, fads, style, cliches, ect into their prods so people want to buy them to "fit in" or "complete" themselves. Then they have all the lil accessories to add onto it like its a freaking lego world. I used to paintball a lot and the gun makers would do the same with their "low end/cheap guns that perform like high end/expensive guns." They make a decent gun that will shoot but there are sooo many upgrades and customizations you can do to the gat that its like a hobby of building model cars or something. u keep adding to your collection and sooner or later you spend the same amount on the low end gun than you would have on an expensive one.
3g iphone should have been the very first iphone they launced. its propaganda. they planned it all for profit. now i heard the iphone2 will be something worth spending money on. but then again, it probably wont be 3g so they can release another one a year later to take more of people's money haha
people talking about the iphone doing video caling..it cant even record video! it cant copy and paste..it cant recieve mms natively..it cant do ALOT that it SHOULD lol
i think they rushed the 3g version
i read somwhere steve jobs didnt want to do a 3g iphone as 3g wasnt that popular (what????), and then lo and behold less than a year later iphone 3g is announced with serious cutbacks
god i really hate it when they say things that make it sound like the iphone is NEW TECHNOLOGY or better than anything else. it just sounds like a bunch of kids who dont know anything about technology, but there are supposed to be business people that come up with this stuff?
I'm gonna say anything and everything is better than the iphone, because it has NO BUTTONS. (dont even bother say "but there's a back button!")
youve probably seen all the different things it can run, it's speed, but without buttons it's basicly worthless. why would you wanna play quake 3 on the iphone if there is no way to play?
i just really hate the way they market the iphone, why does apple have to make such a big deal out of their products? i would much rather everytime a phone came out they claimed it was the best phone. either i would like it if NO PHONES were commercialized at all, or ALL OF THEM were commercialized like the iphone. and that is another thing i hate, i hate comparing things to the iphone, as if it is the almighty. why is it all about comparing to the iphone now? why cant you compare it to...the X51v lol. but serious, i hate it!!

As far as I know the 3G iphone HAS video call, but as there's no front camera it's either you watch the other one on the screen while he sees the landscape behind or he sees you while the screen is facing away from you...
The AT&T Tilt has no front cam either...
Video call is a feature of 3G thanks to the increased network speeds, but the only important part of a 3G phone is to be able to connect to and communicate with a so-called "3G" UMTS WCDMA network...
to my knowledge
at&t tilt is made for US region where there is no 3G networks? so this maybe why tilt has no front cam?
i rather use a dual cam for vid calls than flipping the phones over and over

The Tilt also has 3G, and there are 3G networks in the US... just read a bit on here of all the Americans talking of it
I have a note 9 on Verizon and have noticed that the video quality from my phone to any iPhone Stinks... Pixated and Def not HD...
Any way around this other than using a different chat client?

Is this the same whether you're on WI-FI,or a data connection?
Perhaps the resolution depends on which VZW Data plan you're on &/or,if your high-speed cap has been reached for the billing period?
IDK if the different resolutions on the various data plans apply to video chat clients, just tossin' around the possibilities..........

Yes, no matter if on wifi or cellular. Video viewed on my note 9 is amazing.. Thinking it had to do with some kind of bs compression that vzw applies... Photos on the other hand are crystal clear.
Just really frustrating to have a 1200.00 phone that I can't share HD video with anyone else.
I've even lowered the quality below HD and it still pixelates and looks like garbage

Not knowing which app you're using, but,it sounds app-related,perhaps it has to do with a size limitation on the chat client & video quality is affected.
Just taking guesses here, hoping someone will chime in with a solid explanation.
I'm assuming you are sending them an MMS - if so, they will always look crappy!
If you had an iPhone before as well, you would have been using iMessage. That system will allow much higher quality images than an MMS will, but obviously it's limited to iOS.
For Android, you'd have to use something like WhatsApp or similar (and have your friends use it too)

has nothing to do with the phone. just share videos via links. you could be on a google, one plus...etc and it would all be the same.
id be tempted to tell you to sell your phone for thinking its a device issue since it makes as much sense than thinking it was a phone problem....lol
just use samsung link sharing when you open the video, then press the share icon.
but you should definitely return the phone :cyclops:

Are you talking about SMS? If so, it pretty much compresses your video to a 10 mb file. As you can imagine, that would give you about 1 second of HD video. Any more than that, compression kicks in. The longer the video, the heavier the compression/loss of resolution. SMS is a technology from 20 years ago, it was never meant for this. They pushed it to being able to send decent quality photos, and that's about as good as you're going to get. Apple's iMessage does not use sms for iphone to iphone texting, so it may avoid the compression issue, I'm not sure. And carriers are doing away with SMS, and moving to RCS, which may help this as well.
Point is, if you are sending video over SMS, don't. The issue you are talking about has nothing to do with your phone or any phone. It has to do with limitations of SMS.

I completely understand it's a network compression issue with vzw, and not a device issue.
I love my phone but I need to have a native way to send hd videos... So either way, selling it might be the solution.
The problem that I have is that I would have to convince my bosses to use the new app, as I use my phone to document structural issues and send them to their respective management reps.
This will be nothing short of a miracle.
Why would vzw sell a Ferrari of a device, but only let it in the granny lane capabilities wise

SMS is SMS, has nothing to do with Verizon. It's not a network compression issue, its the limitation of the SMS protocol itself. You get high speed LTE with verizon, right? Verizon does not limit you from using your LTE connection for Whatsapp for example. You choose to use SMS, therefore you have to play by the rules of SMS. Again, this has nothing to do with the carrier. To further expand your analogy, that's like you buying a Ferrari and never taking it outside the confines of New York City. Your car can hit 200 mph, but you're crawling along at 10 mph. If your job requires you to send HD video to iphones and you know that iphone to iphone there is no issue, and you can't use any other app besides text apps, you probably have no choice but to get an iphone. Perhaps this will resolve when Verizon finally activates RCS messaging instead of SMS, as Tmobile is starting to do, but knowing Verizon, you'll be waiting a while. And I don't know that RCS will solve your problem, you'll have to look into it's limitations and when Verizon will actually enable it.

samsung link sharing to the rescue. yeah its 2 steps more than just adding a file to a text but it sure gets the job done quickly. guess g drive or onedrive can basically do the same thing.

Samsung Galaxy note 9 for best full screen video watching experience
Everyone i have found that the note 9 video watching experience in full screen mode is crappy and i have also found an solution for that
Step 1 is to turn on color adjustment and select personalized color option and complete the table.
This will make the washed away red colors in your full screen mode the way you see the color in any other mode
Step 2 is enable the developer options an turn on disable hardware overlay,
This will make the low light quality of the full screen mode 10 times better when watching video
Also applies for the gallery
Thats all hope this was useful for those of you whom watch video on full screen mode and have bad video quality and colors on Samsung phones,.
Thank you, the solution is great, I think it will work great.
It can be an Apple problem as most videos from diferent androids look crap on my iphone , even though the video is sharp on my macbook pro , could be anoyher ios 13 bug as there are alot still not fixed, iphone owners these days seem to be only beta testers for apple , something you dont expect with a 1500 phone ( yes i have both iphone 11 pro and note 9 and 10+ also an old nexus 6 )
