Something is fishy. I have 2 tilts (mine and my wife's) and every time we go for a ride on my new bike my little charge light comes on but with in minutes of riding the abmer charge light on the phone goes out. The light for the car charger is on and the light on the HTC adapter (audio/power splitter) is on, but the phone stops charging. Sometimes after maybe 10mins it will kick back over to charging but not for a long time and then it is a gamble if it will stay charging (normally not).
Trouble Shooting I have tried:
- Different adapters
- Different Car Chargers
- Different socket/outlet
- I even switched phones with my wife today after mine was almost dead after 1/2 day of riding. her phone ont the otherhand stayed charging just fine all day and had the nice pretty "fully charge green light". After switching, she was able to charge my almost dead phone on her bike and I was able to DRAIN hers on my bike :-(
The only constant I can find is my BIKE. ARGH!!!
Note that after taking the phone off my bike and bringing it in the house and pluging it is to the wall charger it still took a few minutes for the amber light to come on. It is almost like the bike does something to the phone that makes the phone quit trying to charge.
One last thing to note, the phone not charging is only the case if I am using the PDA for either Music or GPS or both. If the pda is in Standby mode or OFF it will keep charging just fine.
Both Phones are AT&T Tilt
ROM HD_III WWE
Radio 1.65.17.56
Running:
SPB Pocket Plus
SPB Phone Plus
iGo 2006
Pocket Music
HTC Home disabled
SanDisk 8GB Micro SD card
We are about to head off on a 3,000mile road trip next month and I would really like this to not be an issue. If anyone has anything I can try please let me know.
Thanks

heat related
I was having the same problem and I found out it's due to heat, when the battery becomes hot, the phone stops charging to protect it. when you ride your bike let the wind cool down your phone and you will see it will start charging again.
Exact, sounds like a heat problem. Avoid putting your Tilt in sunlight or at a places where heat from the motor will flow on it.
Maybe try comparing how the locations your Tilts are installed on your bike and your wife's regarding heat and find a place on yours that is suitable.
The phone will stop charging when the battery reaches 40-50°C, which is easy to reach in minutes in sunlight, and helped by the heat the phone generates itself when GPS is on.
Nice point! I have not confirmed your theory yet, but, I have a windscreen and my wife does not. I will move my mount to outside the wind screen and see if that helps. I live in AZ so it is very hot this time of year!
Thanks

i have doubts on the heat theory -- i was in a road trip last weekend (from Bahrain to Saudi) and i used my ppc to navigate - i assure u that outside temp. was 48°C (118°F) and my kaiser was under direct sunlight.. it was functioning -- so based on experience i will reject the theory
i dont want to sound smarty but why dont u carry spare charged battery
when u rest charge both - just a thought

That a legit question. The answer is, when running the GPS, Brightness at full, and all day road trips that take 8-12hrs I would need several batteries.

maybe you should just get a Garmin-Motobike GPS instead
best wishes and have nice & safe trip

It's best to buy a cheap $100-$200 GPS then. Or buy lots of cheap batters from china. But you know the second solution won't work that well D:
To me it sounds more like your bike isn't putting enough juice out to charge the phone while the GPS and everything else is running. I'd check the output of her bike vs your bike.

I can certainly assure you that heat will prevent the kaiser from charging. There are times where i have to move my mount in front of the A/C just to cool the phone down so it will charge. I am not in a terribly hot climate and I also have 2 Tilts that will do the exact same thing. I would say that it gets to about 100F here without the A/C on here in maryland in the August month. Even inside if you were to run the GPS WIFI and tether to bluetooth..... I am SURE your phone will start getting warm after 20 minutes
Heat theory ended up being a bust. Quit charging after a few mins even in the open air. Rode to about 5 miles got gas (it started charging again while i was getting gas) started riding home and it stop by the time I had gotten back on the freeway.
But wait, GOOD NEWS!!!
I went back home and hooked up a new cord directly the positive and negative of the battery and sure enough it is working perfect. Guess that means I [email protected]#ked up the install of my outlets on the bike. I think it must be a bad ground because I ran the + directly to the battery.
Thanks for the help!

I dont know if anyone else is experiencing this, but i have a att tilt with dutty's tilt rom and when i use the GPS and bluetooth, or just bluetooth or just GPS the device overheats to 105-115+ degrees. So when i am using bluetooth and or gps and its being charged the battery still runs out.
What should i do?
I noticed a similar overheating issue but the trigger for me is Live Messenger: when connected, the device gets hot very quickly and battery gets drained in a matter of hours.
My wife has an Elf, and can have Live Messenger connected for a full day, the device stays cold and battery is just fine...
yes this has happend to me with the tilt and 8525. I dont know whether this a defect or security measures from preventing the battery from overheating!
overheating---what i have seen
I just did a cross country trip with mine, here is what i saw. It didnt matter which program i used that needed gps, (co -pilot, or live search) as long as the gps was activated.
When the gps is active, the unit will start to heat up, when it reaches a certain point, it will stop charging. You can do a soft reset and the device will start charging for a bit more, but then stop charging (the charging light goes out)....
If you turn off the gps, it will continue to charge, even though it is still hot.
I put the unit in front of the air conditioned duct and after about 30 seconds, the charging light came back on and it resumed charging.
So it appears to be an intentional function that does not allow overheating of the batteries.....problem is what if you are out of juice and you need to go somewhere ?
i have a bt gps i could use instead, but it kinda defeats the purpose....
OK seems i am not alone on this,
here's my case, i mainly use my TYTN II as a modem to share internet through USB to the laptop, i notice, when i connect to 3G, it gets very hot and and the heat generated, prevented my TYTN II from recharging over the USB hence i am running a drained battery
secondly, i was using my GPS in my car. when the room temperature is low, it was ok, heat generated as normal (over heating) but recharging still going ok, but by the time i gets daylight, and the room temp in my car getting high, i notice that the heat generated by the TYTN II has once again prevented it from recharging, kind of safe mode?
Its seems like it is a security measure. I noticed, while driving on days when its very hot, i would turn on my air condition, and my 8525 would be placed in front of the air ducts. I would have my phone running slingmobile and charging for long periods of time while im jammed in afterwork traffic, and noticed that as long as the cool air was keeping the back of the phone cool, my phone would continously charge! Now when im at work and i would have my phone sitting up on my desk running slingmobile and charging, within an hour or less, the charge would stop and my light would start blinking. I touch the back of it, and guess what it blazing hot! Ive seen similar actions with my tilt as well!
Hi
I don't think there is much to be done about this. Essentially there is lot of chips packed inside a very tiny device. There are no external vents (not possible or very practical with a phone as vents would weaken the case and allow dirt in), or fans for forced cooling.
Once you start something that means the device is on and working, heat builds up.
Most electronic components can go up to quite a high temperature (so hot you couldn't hold it type temperatures) and continue to work fine, however the battery is one thing that can't be used hot due to the chemistry involved, so the charging has to stop.
It's a built in flaw due to the complexity and small size, something that will affect all similar types of device.
Regards
Phil
I had the same problem beofore when using in my car when navigating with GPS
I found it was the screen beeing on.
In Garmin Mobile XT there is a function to turn down screen and open only when there are directions comming. This made my device be at normal temp again.
I think the screen just produces allot of heat. also the sceen uses alot of electric and that heats up battery and charging hardware also

hi princeasi,
apparently, this has always been the case with my previous PDA's. as far as i could remember, my hermes did the same thing. i remember when i tried to use it in my room, where air con is turned off. it didn't really need a very high room temperature, it would simply stop charging. and guess what, even my atom life was the same!
Ok, I've been trying to get to the bottom of this problem for a long time.
I've got unilimited HSDPA GPRS on my Tilt, so I tether to my laptop. Kaiser is connected through a 1Amp powered USB hub to a laptop. Tilt was just lying on the desk, and I noticed several interesting things:
1. If Kaiser is at 100% charge - the green light (power) will stay on for a long time, about 40-60 minutes.
2. If Kaiser is NOT at 100% charge, it will charge (orange light) but won't reach 100%. It will stop charging in about 20-30 minutes.
3. If I put Kaiser on a cup, so that there's nothing under it and air moves freely all the way around the Kaiser - I get around 40-60 minutes of charging even when battery is less than 100%. If it is 100%, I can get up to 1.5 hours or so.
4. Whenether it stops charging - I notice that the back of Kaiser gets pretty high.
5. Every 40-60 minutes the charging light comes on again and charges for about 10-20 minutes (gives couple % to battery), then comes off again.
6. BatteryStatus app shows:
6.1 When charge light is ON: + some MAh, don't remember exact number, but it's like 10 or 20.. very low charge
6.2 When charge light is OFF: full battery drain, -400 or somewhere around there (can't remember). It seems that power flow through USB port just stops, disconnects.
7. I see same results when using car charger and stock AC power adapter.
8. Traffic definitelly affects it. If I just have HSDPA on and not using it - it charges fine, it seems. When I start using up the traffic (download files, watch TV, etc) it starts to heat up and stops charging after some time.
It seems to me that the problem with Kaiser stopping to charge when using HSDPA is caused by heat. There must be something on the hardware that turns off charging if the processor/MB/hardware is overheating. I guess charging the battery generates more heat than using the battery, or why else would it turn off charging when overheating?
Just thought that this, perhaps, would be interesting to some developers or people who have the same problem. Maybe someone can put Kaiser in front of a good fan and see what kind of result does that give - maybe it will keep charging.
Assuming that this is true, I don't suppose a fix is possible. Except for, perhaps, switching to slower connection (not applicable in my case) or putting kaiser on a bag of ice.

What does the Batterystatus app read in all above situations?
Since I exchanged my Kaiser, I don't feel the unit getting hot anymore. The previous unit used to get v.hot using wi-fi and 3G/HSDPA - Possible fault?

Scary... I experienced this for the first time last night. Was streaming some vid from my tversity server whilst on the mains charger. All of a sudden my Kaiser got extremely hot. I immediately stopped streaming and let it cool.
I don't think it stopped charging though but I guess it makes sense that it would be protected against overheating.
The only thing I can suggest is try charging with .5 amp... not actually sure that it would charge too well at that though, especially if you're giving it a good workout at the same time.

Try without that 1Amp powered USB hub to a laptop....
1Amp is max i gues... so maby it's giving less, so it take a long time to get from 80% to 100% and yep lot off heat....

I don't use it anymore, but before, if I remember correctly, it showed around small charge (+) when light is on.. then, when phone stops charging it used to drop to full battery drain, around -400 MAh or something like that.
So you got a new Kaiser and it doesn't heat up when using HSDPA? Really?! Have you tried using HSDPA for a long time (actually using the traffic like tethering, MobiTV, etc..)

I see exact same problems when connected to a AC power supply that it came with. Same problem when using car charger.. and same problem when powering by USB without the AC adapter.
Here's my theory... Lithium ion batteries have on-board microprocessors to protect the battery and device from damage. If the battery gets hot the processor will shut down the charging to prevent damage. No matter what tweaks you do to the device or modifications to the charger this on board processor will override and shut down charging if it deemed it was necessary.

No, I said the replacement didn't get hot - read uncomfortably hot - It does get warm, but only in the same way it does when taking a long phone call. My first kaiser used to get extremely hot when charging which indicated a short somewhere. All is well now though.
I hope you can get this sorted though - are you able to get a replacement?

Ahh, I see.
Yeah I think I'd be able to... but mine doesn't get "extremely hot".. it's just.. warm to very warm. It seems normal for me, don't think it's heating anymore than it should.
Have anyone had this problem with 3G (not hsdpa)? Cuz if it happens in 3G as well - that means another reason to be pissed at HTC - they've design kaiser in such a way that you cannot charge and use HSDPA at the same time.
This problem can be easily recreated and a result from other user would tell if it some device or not.
HSPDA with streaming music while charging = warm
HSPDA with streaming video while charging device = Extremely hot
At this point the USB charging will shut off for whatever reason. I just wondering why the phone is putting out that much heat and can it cause problems since I am starting to stream video via HSPDA while charging a lot.

I was just thinking that on some systems it might have interfered with craptive sync. I never guessed that it was because of direct charging issues.
Do you still have problems if you are plugged into the OEM charger, and not a USB port or hub?

Yep. I tried tethering through WiFi (successfully), and same result. Maybe even heats up more, since now there's one more module to power up.
Somebody told me some time ago that iPod charger fixes these problems... can anybody confirm that?

i have an att tilt with the stock rom minus the bloatware.
when i installed battery status (basic version) i noticed that my charging became extremely slow. with the ac charger after the battery status install...it registered +350ma, then it fell to +110ma and wouldn't go any higher, no matter if i soft-reset or not...sometimes it was simply 0. i tried usb connection, ac connection, it didn't make a difference. the charging crawled along slower than i had ever seen it. 39%...40%..........41%. i had enough and i deleted battery status and softreset.
when i rebooted the phone, the battery immediately read 100% (from 41% before the reboot)!!!! and the charging was back to normal.
so my suggestion is to see if removing battery status...and see if that helps?

I never got teathering to work through USB. I'd either teather through WiFi or BT with the a/c charger plugged in. I'd imagine teathering through WiFi would be the worst. Most times I teather I'm just reading email, visiting various forums, and on rare occasions I'm downloading music. I'll have to try later and see what happens while I download music over a teathered WiFi connection...

My Kaiser was absolutely baking last night.
I have a stuck pixel so was using a video that I found somewhere that you play on a continuous loop. The phone wasn't completely flat when I started playing the video but within half an hour or so the low batt notification popped up so I stuck it on charge (supplied mains charger).
I was connected to wifi but wasn't actually doing anything with it (video being played from sd card), in fact I wasn't even using the phone, it was just sat on the side charging and playing the video.
About an hour later I came back to the phone to find it was extremely hot. So hot the heat had travelled right through the phone body and even the screen was hot to touch and the battery was still flat so had clearly stopped charging.
I immediately switched the phone off and removed the battery, even then it took an age to cool down.
I don't know whether to get on to Orange for a replacement... I don't think it's right that it should get that hot.
This has been discussed before but some nice new information is coming out in this thread that ties a few things together.
The Lithium battery does have an onboard charging management system that will stop charge if the battery overheats but also if this heat is combined with high current drain. This should be at a precise point but I have experimented with three types of battery and get very different results between the three AND also between batteries of the same type.
The best performing battery seems to be the latest Samsung (P/N 35H00086-00M) with the external 'X' shaped heat spreader on the back that connects to the four earthing points in the battery compartment. Ealier batteries and some 3rd party batteries have this earthing spreader covered with potting compound or even omitted.
One other item I have found, a 1A rated USB port does not give a continous 1A output. Most ports are only rated at 1A surge and will only give out approx 600mA continuous before IT'S own thermal management system cuts off and kills the USB completely, this is probably the cause of comms loss by some people.
Nice informative thread DarkDvr.

Look under the gps threads. You will surely experience some sort of collaps after 4-5 hours as the TD runs hot and stops charging. The trick is to place it so it can stay cool and let it rest (switch off and let it recharge) while you rest on the way. I'll advise you to consider a second battery as it will collaps just as you need it the most.
Edit
And do get a proper car recharger as well as the spare bat (e.g. Happii.dk sells both battery and the original HTC car charger CU S170 cheap - I got mine there and it features the HTC logo rather than the usual LED - cool. Also the pouches are more than cheap there should you need one).

Just place it in front of an air conditiong vent and you will probably be OK. When in doubt: check if the LED-circle around the centre button is flashing or burning (this can be tricky to see in bright sunlight).

Indeed - You'll get involved in an accident (in which case it dosn't matter if the phone is charged or not). The problem with iGO8 (my navigation) is it has a remaining bat. bar which shows full bat. in blue when connected to the car charger, even when it does not charge (I verified this by looking at the absence of the blue ring). Putting in fron of the vent is quite imposible not to say inconvient location, but a fan might do. I am also not sure if condense could become a problem.

can i charge the diamond with car charger that give 5.4V

I thought this issue was related just to me using a car/cigarette lighter charger not specific to my devices but now I am not convinced!!
I have found that with my Diamond (and previously my Kaiser) that on an extended trip in the car, on a warm-hot day, with the device stuck to the dash windscreen, and running GPS software (Tomtom) that the device gets overly hot......no kidding you would think as it is in the direct sunlight (not often in Scotland though ) HOWEVER this is not the issue, the issue is that after a while it just stops charging (~30mins), presumably as a safety mechanism to cut down the heat and to stop the Li battery, er...exploding
My question is: has anyone else had this issue? Its rather inconvenient to arrive at your holiday destination, or other, only to find that your device has been totally drained as its been running (yes it still runs!!) on battery for the last hour or two. Surely this is something HTC must look at!!
Has anyone else had this issue (I've read of a few....hence this post!) esoecially those in a warmer climate, and if not, could it be because of a better? in-dash charging system...
Last note, these device are built with GPS (supposedly for car use!), if this is a real issue then it is what I would call flaw in the device......
Appreciate all comments please (especially from HTC/battery/device charging experts)
Read that already here that the Diamond stops charging when getting too hot! It seems that this is a built in overheat protection maybe for the battery but also for all the other electronic parts. Think they´ve implement it beacause of the very slim device design where there is less room to get rid of higher temperatures to protect it.
I had this issue not on my diamond till now, its only two weeks old, but I can report similar things about my Loox 720 and have red many posts regarding hp 4700 when they where the leader on pda-market a few years ago.
Charging the battery will be stoped by the device-electronics, after reaching a curtain temperature, this is common to all LiIon-charging electronics, I think.
What I've heard about the Diamond is, that it should help to swtich of WLAN, cause it tends to develop much heat.
Hi
Yes, initially I beleived it was to little amps from my 12V charger but I got the "to hot-not charging" tip from another tread in this forum.
As soon as my Diamond got colder it started to take charge again.
My car does not have an air conditioner and I need to put it on the dashbord to get satellite signals. I have not found a good solution yet.

Don't they say in the manual of every electronic device, don't put it in direct sunlight. Li-On batteries dont like to be too hot or too cold, it's not something HTC can fix I don't think, just don't leave the phone in direct sunlight.
My old Kaiser user to do this when I had to go out in the company van instead of my air conditioned car. I found folding a piece of white paper in half and using it as a "phone hat" made quite a big difference.

LOL guys, perhaps we need to put a little parasol on the dash or maybe keep it in the glove compartment!!!
...seriously, I would like to think that this is a flaw, after all, where else can you safely put a "GPS device with street naviagation in your car"...it has to go on the w/screen or dash!!

Yes, I've hadi the same problem. The only solution that I've found is to put the phone on a support near the car fan, so it can be cooled. Otherwise when became too hot stop charging and after half an hour the battery is totally out. !
It's a good thing, if you charge a battery in a too hot environnement, you kill it.
I can confirm this. I tried to navigate for 2 hours in my car, TD attached to my w/screen and after half an hour or shorter it shut down. And I couldn't get it on either. Wouldn't charge or anything. I had to wait a few minutes and then it would charge again. This happend two times during the same drive. After that I placed my TD infront of a fan and worked like a charm..seems like it gets to hot.
Oh yea btw. I also noticed I had, what looks like melted plastic, inside my phone after the drive (attached image)

something like that would be perfect. Alternatively, using something like AEButton plus to map a key to turn off the screen will help as it will lower the power consumption. you can still hear the turn by turn instructions so you can still get where you are going most of the time, and the lower power drain will allow the battery to charge for longer without the temperature protection kicking in.
What i usually do is to just putt the air-con full blast on the winshield, it is usually a better idea to keep expensive electronic equipment in the normal operating temperature range anyway,

On a different note, has your Diamond received a soaking? It likes like the water-sensitive sticker (used by HTC to tell if it's suffered water damage) is red on yours which suggests it has...?
Mathew
Happened on the Tytn and Tytn II as well~
Well, I am so sad to see this is still an issue.
My 8525 (had 3) and my Tilt(s) (I have 2) and they have run into the same problem of not charging under heavy use; i.e; Backlight on, Tomtom, GPS all running.
I so hoped they would have fixed this.
ATT has replaced all the phones that developed the problem so far.
I think one of the comments about being designed for in car use is amusing especially because most (if not all) GPS software says "Do not use while driving"
Batteries do overheat, and it's better that the charging is stopped, than you having a £400 fire on your dash board!

for example in iGO 8 there is an option to turn on the screen backlight only before crossroads - settings - device and you have an option to have light olways on, device settings or inteligent state when light is always turned of after passing crossroad and turning on some x hundred meters before crossroad

The device should stop loading, before its beeing killed. Have to take care of when its possible to load the device and when not is nothing, what I've red in any user-manual before.

Hmm no. It hasn't recieved a soaking. The phone has always been dry inside my pocket . Are you sure the red "thing" indicates the phone has been suffering from water damage?

My sticker/laber is white of color, so it could be be it came in contact with a liquid.
I repair notebooks and similar sticker, labels & coatings are used that change color when the come in to contact with a liquid. I've also asked a college of mine who used to repair mobile phones and he also confirmed that the put in stickers or laber or special coatings that react to liquids so it easy for the engineer to see if the machine is valid for warranty or not.
But I can't say for sure that the sticker I see on my phone that is white (& your is red), is such a sticker that changes color wen it comes in contact with a liquid.
While using my TP2 with Tomtom as a satnav a couple of days back, I noticed the indicator light started flashing orange / green. It was in a cradle attached to the windscreen of the car and hooked up to cigaretter-lighter power. I took it off the cradle and blasted it for a few minutes with the air-conditioning and it stopped flashing and was alright for another half-hour or so, but then the flashing started again. I noticed that while the phone was flashing, the battery wasn't charging, so there was a danger it would run out, which would of course mean no more satnav.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? The TD2 does get pretty hot while being used for satnav.
With summer on the way, I think this problem is only going to get worse. Being in the windscreen, the phone gets a fair bit of heat from the sun, but my old standalone Tomtom Go never had overheating issues.
Similar thing used to happen with my Diamond as it was in direct sunlight in the car most the day. It wouldn't start flashing or anything, it would just stop charging. So I got a swivelling windscreen mounted car holder and positioned it right in front of one of the air vents. This always did the trick, especially when the air conditioning was on. Also, positioning it away from the sun is no harm.
The interesting this is, this never used to be a problem with my old Touch Pro.
I've got exactly the same problem today with my TD2 and iGO8 navigation. After half an hour the battery was extremly hot. I'm not using original HTC car charger.
Do you think that this could be the problem? Or the problem is on TD2 side :-(?
My Diamond always gets hot when using Tomtom. So it least it's consistent with other HTC products. I've changed radios and roms but it never changed the temp. when using tomtom. Always hot for me.

Weird that, the Touch Pro never suffered that problem. It's incredibly annoying because Tomtom drains the battery very quickly, so not being able to keep it charged from the cigarette lighter means it's gonna conk out in short order - you've got to notice it's not charging and then pull over so you can take it out of the cradle and blast it with the aircon. Bit of a bummer for people without aircon as well....
I might add, its important that you have a suitable car holder for your device. I used an adjustable generic holder with the squishy pads at the side for my old Diamond, and the back of the Diamond would lie flush to the holder (ie no gap at the back) This caused it to get pretty hot. So I invested in holder specifically for the Diamond that had no cushions. Also, it didn't completely wrap around the Diamond, allowing a bit of air flow. See here. Much better temperatures as a result.
iGo8 in particular is CPU intensive, so that'll cause heat. TomTom is a little bit less CPU sensitive so temps may be lower. Also, battery life is less with iGo 8.
And of course make sure unnecessary features such as WiFi are turned off whilst in the car holder. WiFi being active used to generate buckets of heat on my Diamond.
I have ordered Brodit car holder for my TD2 - this one - and I will place it near aircon fan in my car. Hope this will help ...
My D2 always gets very hot while using it for navigation for a long time. It's only since yesterday that I have the brodit active holder. Until now it would always lie on the seat next to me. I hope the brodit will keep it cooler, as air can pass on all sides. However, the brodit also charges it, so I guess that will cause extra heat....
Same here with using iGo 8 as Nav-Soft!
Same here with TomTom.
I had the same problem on my TD1 and the Cruise I.
The problem is the tempeture? I only have the problem whem the phones are in de bag from my motorcycle. When I use the Brodit in my car I don't have any problem.
Re hot
I used sat nav at the weekend, it killed the battery (hooked it to the car charger) and it got REALLy hot.
Saying that, even keeping it in my pocket, it gets quite hot.
I've got a vent mounting bracket, will try using that to keep the phone out of the sun and in the flow of air from the aircon. Might help. Never had this problem with my TP. I miss my TP.
