I am running Dutty's 6.1 Hybrid Rom and don't seem to be picking up the new 3G network in NYC.
I know in the UK there is a username and password. Does anyone know if that is the case in the US?
Also, I have the $5.99 plan, not the full blown $19.99 a month deal.....

Call T-mob tech support.
I just noticed that in the phone>settings>band that UMTS 1700 is not an option....
The phone's wiki says it supports it, is this a 'feature' in the Rom?
Kaiser doesn't support the US T-Mobile 3g band.
From the wiki
UMTS 1700 (Emobile-only)
What does Emobile-only mean?
T-Mobile US 3G uses AWS 1700, so you're out of luck on trying to get a kaiser to work on the newly launched T-Mobile 3G. As of this date, there are no smartphones released that will work on the T-Mobile US 3G.
Emobile is (I believe) a Japanese carrier.
ok first i think AT&T users have an issue with T-Mobile users cuz T-Mobile provides 3G on the 2100 band.
Second there was a claim in this forum somewhere that he was getting 3G signal on T-Mobile in Boston.
T-Mobile users if you get 3G connection please talk. AT&T users without T-Mobile service shush.

Why would AT&T users have an issue if T-Mobile users are able to utilize 3g or not?

This attitude will get you nowhere other than ignored. Don't make the assumption that just because someone uses AT&T, they are automatically wrong when it comes to other networks.
Anyone with real intelligence would just go to a T-Mobile store in NYC, find a phone that supports 3G, and look at the Band settings page to see which frequency it is running on.
As for the 3G guy in Boston, it is quite possible that a hiccup in the network caused him to jump on to an AT&T tower momentarily.
I think the At&t, lack of 3G issue is related to iPhones, regardless it is silly.
If anything people should argue the cost and terms of their contracts (in the US anyway.)

well i apologize if my comment offended you but you shouldn't assume that i assume that someone using AT&T service is automatically wrong.
If you're trying to say I have no real intelligence, every T-Mobile store I've seen in Queens and Manhattan has dummy phones on display. There is no way to check the settings myself. I can ask the salesman or call CS.
Anyways 3G on T-Mobile isn't just on 1700Mhz. Its also on 2100Mhz
you may be right that the dude in boston jump on to an AT&T tower for a while. but you can be wrong cuz you don't know the details to T-Mobile 3G service. or maybe he didn't have a tilt and had the kaiser/tynt II from europe.

Right because the tytn II is a completely different device than the tilt...
You need to research how the signals operate and why it utilizes two frequencies and maybe, just maybe, you'll stop making an ass of yourself.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=389944 last post asshole.
So T-Mobile is such a ghetto-fabulous company that they don't even give you live demos to play with? I mean even Sprint, who Deutsche Telekom is considering buying, gives you live phones to play with.
I'm not sure why my post was deleted, but I'm the guy from boston that posted about my phone jumping to 3g. The reason I posted was because this past friday night(May 2nd 2008), at around 11:30pm, the icon on my phone jumped to 3g. Normally, this only happens for a second, then the carrier info will say AT&T 3G, then I get no service. However, this time, the icon said 3G, and my carrier info still said T-mobile. It stayed that way for about 45 minutes or so.
I'm using an unlocked at&t tilt and a WM6.1 Rom from xda (I don't remember which one, but it's very light - as in, light on crap and unused features)

So it would be safe to say your tilt jumped on TMO 3g 2100 freq. WOW!!!
Anyone using an N1 in Dayton Ohio?
May need to switch carriers.
How is your coverage north of Dayton, I70?
arent you from howardforums....
Hi osugsxr,
Long time no talk. Not on that forum much, very active on NexusOne Forum. How's it going?
I sold my BB's and have an N1 I rooted and starting to theme, love it. But, the areas I go to now with work, like Tipp and Troy are not covered well by CBW. I need to change carriers. I was in north Columbus Tuesday and NO SERVICE.
It is obviously a TMO version, won't work on Att. Too bad cause they have nicer clamshells for the wife and my one son gave the other is 3g iphone and got the 4g. I can jailbreak it and go TMO, know only 2g works that way. May not get him data anyway. So, in a fix. Don't want to sell N1 and get an Incredible on Att, like N1 and maybe will not like Att dropped calls and the junk, Media Center, they put on their phones.
Wondering if TMO has good 3g in those ares I mentioned with the N1. Or, any suggestions.
Ken
I use the N1 on TMO but can't speak of anything past Vandalia going north. I was just up there two weeks ago and had no problems in the Vandalia area.
Cincinnati Bell roams on T-mobile. If your phone says Cin Bell USA that means you are on T-mobile. I am not familiar with coverage in the Dayton area, I typically stay around Cincy or south in KY. Hope this at least helps a little.
Thanks everyone,
OutlawPro: By Vandalia I am on Edge no 3g
stickerbob: I have seen Cinbell on occasion, no 3g. But, most of the time Edge or no connection. Figured it would roam in Columbus, but couldn't even make a call from Polaris Mall. Just norht of Columbus off of 270.

Yes I have same problem within my house, upstairs ill get 3g coverage and go down one floor itll be switching back and forth. As for being in Columbus my cincy bell coverage dropped and had to switch to cinbell usa tmobile, and I had 3g coverage near polaris and basically it was pretty solid, but I had to manually make the switch over to cinbell usa.
If you arent getting the coverage I would consider switching to another carrier, for me cincybell is solid only $15 for unlimited text and data.....using it to tether and for the ipad wifi been averaging 5-6gb month. What makes it worse is most of that is from downloading roms and flashing them. Its fun to develop with this phone, but I may have to get rid of it stop playing with it. New hobby probably going to be a harley .....
osugsxr,
You don't pay the extra gb's do you. CBW is suppose to be true unlimited. I have seen CinBell USA, but when I try it, it won't register on network. Mayb not far enough outside CBW area. Did not try in Columbus. Could also try checking 2g when no 3g or CinBell available. I like CBW too. But need voice and gps where I go on calls.
BTW, appreciated all your help on Howards. Glad I got the N1 and rooted.
I should be able to tether on TMO also, don't do it very often. So, limits won't apply.

Nope dont pay the extra gb's, although I did read in the contract where cbw will think you are tethering if you go over 5gbs, but nothing has been mentioned to me about my usage, so Im when that time comes we will see but I doubt it ever will. Cinbell USA you do have to be out of range, when my 3g coverage drops I will change settings to cinbell usa, it wont allow me to register onto network. Once I flip back over to cinbell I usually regain my 3g service most of the time.
Yes rooting is addicting, very fun and being able to change up your phone is nice. I did sell my original n1, and was about to make the switch to an iphone but was talked out of it, took the money and purchased another n1, basically brand, with all the original equipment which I didnt have.
Thanks for the info.
Ok, so the other day I visited an AT&T store, and while I was there I got talking with one of the reps there. We were talking about flashing different ROMS and such, when he showed me his phone. He was running a custom rom that he cooked up in the romkitchen. He then showed me his speedtest.net scores and they were off the charts! He was getting something like 9 Mbps down, and 30 Mbps upload speed! He tried to explain to me how he had done this, off the record of course, but I haven't been able to figure it out! If there is anyone out there who can help out an aspiring noob, I would really appreciate it!
its called HSPA (aka HSPUA and HSPDA for upload and download)
They probably also have a signal repeater or a microcell in the store too increase performance
yeah tricky a-holes... "see how good att reception is? ..... (in our store) "
Interesting, so I guess to simplify, captivate is still unable to access what AT&T calls "4G"? Also how would one know if they were accessing HSPA?

The captivate us capable of hspa it just needs to be flashed to a different modem.bin that supports it
The signal icon at the top will say H instead of 3g.
As for 4g that will never work.

How much experience do you have with at&t as a provider? Or are you just regurgitating what you have read. Every carrier has their issues but you seem to have some deep seeded hatred for at&t.
@op, the captivate will connect to hsdpa just fine but the speeds the rep was getting are not possible.

They actually lowered my monthly rate a couple months ago. I was shocked. As for everyone else being a lot cheaper, I am not so sure. I have had Sprint, still have a Verizon plan, and recently looked into T-Mobile. In the end it comes down to coverage for me.

well their prices(AT&T) are still higher than the other providers. unlimited data plans for $20-$30 when at AT&T you only get so much but get unlimited when on wifi....then again wifi isnt everywhere. i myself have almost the lowest plan with one of the lowest data plans and still pay almost $100 a month!....just sayin
Hey I appreciate all the input regarding my question, ive done quite a bit of reading on this forum lately and am learning a lot! So I guess my next question would be, what kind of speedtest.net scores would one get if connected to HSPA?
HSPA that Att is deploying currently is limited to 14.4Mbps. Real world speeds up to ~12Mbps. The captivate does NOT have HSPA, only 7.2Mbps HSDPA.

Wireless network speeds depend on a number of variables. If you see the H, it just means the software is turned on in the tower you are connecting to. The faster speeds are dependent on whether or not there is expanded backhaul (fiber from the tower into the network) in your area. Until that's added, you won't see speeds above what you get from 3G. Of course geography, your location, number of people connecting to your tower, etc... also play a role.
I am currently on ATT with the Samsung Galaxy S III and I was thinking about switching to TMobile since they have unlimited data and also because ATT has the locked bootloader. The problem is, I am scared of switching to a new service provider. I tried asking around the office and I can't find ANYONE that has TMobile (At least not in the past year or two).
So my question is for people who currently have TMobile. How is the coverage? The speed? There isn't LTE here for TMobile but there is for ATT but I read that the 3.5g that TMobile has is pretty fast.
Any advice either way?
P.S. Please don't go out of your way bashing the other carriers, I am just asking to help me pick the best network for myself and my HTC One. If you have had both carriers, feel free to comment on both. But if you haven't had ATT, please don't bash it (and vice versa)
Once again, if you have had TMobile in the past year or so, please let me know what you think of it.
Thanks
Rob
AT&T HTC One running on T-Mobile 3G. My town finally got refarmed the phone constantly bounces around EDGE, H, and H+ = Battery Drain
But the speeds are pretty impressive, well compared to EDGE. I can literally walk around the house and have it switch between Data Speeds.
Coverage within the City is constant full bars, but now that they started refarming the area it's spotty 3G. For me though it's worth it. AT&T in my area has better coverage when it comes to the suburban areas, but the prices do not compare T-Mobile wins hands down.

It all depends on where you live. If you have service nothing is better value than T-Mobile in my opinion.
Well in my opinion I have had t mobile, Verizon and at&t. It all comes down to service I get 20-50 mbps on art lte constantly, T-Mobile can be iffy from time to time if in a rural area and well the price if unlimited plus the price of paying for the phone each month comes close to att. The one thing over the years I have learned is loyalty can go a long way and when your needing that upgrade early it does pay off being with your provider for a while. I hope this helps out and this is just an opinion of mine.
Btw the bootloader is unlockable for att

Tmobile of you got good coverage in your area.
I am in the same boat, I've had Tmobile in the past and while the customer service is 10x better than AT&T I could never stick with them due to coverage being an issue. However, the area has recently been upgraded and coverage seems to be much better so I think I'm going to switch soon. Not to mention AT&T stopped offering military discount, while Tmo has the best military discount of any carrier.
Yeah, it really depends where you live. Minneapolis area has great coverage. I plan on switching back to them in June (currently on AT&T).
Don't be afraid of T-Mobile...

So I ended up buying 2 HTC Ones from TMobile, they put a hold on my bank account for 300 dollars and then they cancelled the order. I called them to ask them what was up and they said they are cancelling all HTC One pre-orders that are placed because of an IT issue where the processing system doesn't think any HTC Ones are in stock.
But they are letting the system hit my credit to check if I can get the phone and they are charging my bank account even though they know the system will cancel the order at the end.
That along with the fact I'm not quite sure how good coverage/speed is in Toledo, OH has made my mind up. I'm staying with AT&T.
Thanks everyone for your input

Your just the guy I'm looking for. I'm currently on att with the HTC ONE, but thinking about going to tmobile's prepaid $30 plan. The coverage in Charlotte NC looks good, but I'm not exactly sure because I haven't used it. However, $30 is a great savings. While your out and about, your getting hspa +? But it switches constantly between hspa + and edge?
But my HTC ONE has no 4G at all, and I checked the whole area, not just one spot. I tried update my profile(No idea what's that for) and PRL, and nothing helps at all. Also, after update profile, I actually got stuck, lost cell connection for all. But that's a separated issue I'll say. I guess it should be that Sprint faked their coverage( I turned on my ATT phone with Tmobile sim, solid 4G LTE) just to get subscribers, and I'm pretty upset that with all the seemingly good news about Sprint, the real steps are so small, compare to other 4 carriers.
Do you think the phone itself is on the fault? I'm in the Irvine CA area, might be part of the Santa Ana market they are talking about just went online with 4G, which is just not true.

Get close to a known 4g tower (within a few blocks,) check s4gru.com if you don't know where any are. If you still don't get any, there is something wrong with your phone. Sprint 4G on 1900Mhz is pretty fragile and the One drops it pretty easily, unfortunately the S4 actually is better in this regard.

No idea really, my buddy at work picks up 4g on his S4 several blocks away from where I can in several locations. I'm actually going to flash another radio to see if it helps. May be worth a shot for you too.

The Sprint Coverage Map is an approximation. However, I will agree that a lot of the information is not specifically accurate. For example, the map has shown 4G LTE for my town for over 3 months now. Realistically, I've only been picking up LTE for less then a month now. I don't know what criteria they base the coverage map on (or their underlying intentions) but I have always considered it "somewhat accurate."
The HTC One doesn't help itself either. My wife's Note2 picks up solid LTE in our house; whereas my One can barely hold a 3G reception sitting next to her.

followed the link, interestingly, saw the coverage all along the road, I think it should be one or two person with the app driving through and sent back the signal strength. The real coverage should be wider, cause I don't know any antenna will transmit such a pattern
They have technician that have receivers in their vehicles and as they drive around doing work they collect the signal data.

Sprint really just needs to work on their coverage, they told my mates and I that they would have lte over here by the end of LAST April... nothing. We have 4g signal here, I know this because my old htc evo picked up 4g signals at home, but now that i'm using the one, it has no backwards compatibility with 4g and can only use 4glte, so the unlimited data im paying for is pointless because when i'm home I use wifi since its faster than the 3g i'm picking up (obviously). Really considering the switch to T-mobile when my contract is up.

The phone isn't at fault. I had the same problem, sprint still shows i'm in a good LTE area and there's nothing here lol. Tested on 4 different devices.

Man, 4G wimax is not 4G LTE, and Sprint will not do anything with the wimax anymore. But I agree with you on Sprint needs to work on their coverage quick.

Well, as demo27vol1 posted the s4gru link, there should be 4G coverage on many parts of the place I am at, that site should be from crowd source, not Sprint. What I found is, if I look at the s4gru's coverage very carefully, I can find one place with much stronger signal, where my phone can get 4G, (I'm not driving around with that map and my phone to try to map the coverage myself, I just went to that place and saw 4G and come back to verify with others' report and found it's relevant.) So I do think the phone is at fault now, means it has some problem with the 4G that it can't get the signal if it's weaker. I guess we should discuss this a lot because I would like everyone having similar experience to be aware of the problem.
It's generally understood at this point that metal phones get worse reception. HTC devices do not have a good track record of having good reception on Sprint as it is (Evo 4G LTE for example).
Most people who have compared the HTC One to an S3/S4 have found that the HTC One gets similar or slightly worse coverage (especially regarding 4G LTE). There are a few who say it's better on the One, but they are in the minority. The largest issue I have noticed on the One is that once it drops the 4G down to 3G, it requires an act of God to make it want to go back to 4G if your 4G signal is only marginal.
This is only a real problem because Sprint's 3G is so bad that a terrible 4G signal is actually faster and more reliable than full bars of 3G in many areas.
I agree, my GF has the GS4 and it holds on to the weak LTE signal for dear life while my One prefers not even to try to get it lol
sometimes i'll 4636 and force it out of spite
