Version 0.9.9.1
Released August 11, 2008
* Does your device have an integrated GPS receiver?
* Is your device subscribed to an unlimited data plan?
* Is the device OS Windows Mobile 5.0 or above?
If you answered yes to all of the above, then GPSToday is a today-screen plugin just for you!
Now Includes:
* GeoTerrestrial GeoWeather New!
* GeoTerrestrial GeoLogger New!
* and the GeoTerrestrial GeoTagger add-on for automatically geo-tagging/geo-coding pictures taken on your device!
Features
GeoTerrestrial GPSToday offers a mind-boggling array of intuitively accessible features hidden behind a unique and clever interface.
* It utilizes intelligent algorithms to always maintain and display a fix on your position right on your today screen, without draining the battery.
* Always see your full street address, not just geo-coordinates.
* GPSToday always shows the distance to the nearest contact from your device's address book.
* Single tap to create a new contact with your current location as the address, or save the current location as an existing contact's address. Imagine not having to type the full street address on the PPC keyboard!
* You will never need the stylus to use GPSToday!
* Speed, heading and satellite data is shown clearly on the today screen whenever the GPS is running.
* In-pocket tap protection. A single tap on the today screen only operates the GPS in quick fix mode. To fully start the GPS in continuous mode requires an iphone like sliding motion, guaranteeing no pocket accidents.
* Single tap from the today screen to access fully draggable online maps!
* Always see all your address book contacts on the map. Just tap a contact to quickly call/email or send sms.
* Single tap from today screen to quickly do a yahoo local search around your current position and see the results on a live map. Just tap a result to call or open the website.
* High quality Yelp Reviews for local search results!
* Fetch the full street address for any point on the map.
* GPSToday automatically disables data access when your device goes into roaming mode.
* Install the GeoTagger add-on to have pictures automatically geo-tagged with current location!
* You can also manually geotag single or sets of pictures by selecting the desired location on the map.
* Supports 240x320, 480x640 VGA, 240x240 and 320x320 resolutions
* Now includes GeoTerrestrial GeoWeather which always shows you the current weather for your current location right on the today screen.
* Now includes GeoTerrestrial GeoLogger which allows for automatic logging of position updates to a file.
* And many more features.
* Best of all, its free!

Tried it. Looks cool but it doesnt act as a gps for mapping / driving directions. Shame because it seems pretty neat. I suppose if you entered an address into a contact listing for anywhere you wanted to go it may work, but for my job i drive to a minimum of 10 new places a day......so its pretty impractical. It appears to tie into google maps. Neat idea though. Would be cool to track the turns without having to have Tomtom take the device by full screen lol
Works great, and would be handy to be able to tell people where you are in terms of an address.
it'll also tell you how hot it is based on your gps location, and how fast you're moving.
I really liked the program, but all of that GPS activity just killed my battery.
If it killed your battery, then you didn't read how to use it. Don't turn it on full-time, set it to auto. After a few days it'll figure out your usage pattern.
I used it for a long time to keep my GPS prepped more than anything, but I don't anymore because I don't use the built-in GPS much. If I could figure out how to make the camera use a different com port, I would *never* use the build-in GPS.

OS Map v1.1 is completely free (although donations are appreciated!), and available now from the Android Market.
More information, FAQs, and plenty more screenshots are available at http://www.pocketgamer.org/os-map
Just to add, scales right up to smallest the OS produce are available... i.e. to individual building level.
Nice.
Well, that didn't take long. Received an email from Ordnance Survey today, negotiations begin... at least they haven't run to Google or blocked my API key yet, though... ;-)
i have noticed there is no map key ?
ie whot is a rd how is a footpath marked etc
i know alot of it is straight foward but not every body is switched on to start off with ..
it could do with a button in with the settings that opens up a window with a list of whot is on the map .. like you get at the top of a papper os map
also i found that if you leave the app to look at an email then go back to it it had to reload , wich is a right pain if your running 2g and roaming ...
oooo and can you over ride the lock time too mine is set for a 1 min and keeps turning the map off when im looking at it .....
apart from that well pleased have now used it for the last 5 days nearly non stop while walking along the coast of devon ... apart from a few comection issues its been top notch
hairybum (some of the professionalism from this reply has gone already because I can't stop sniggering...)
Reloading after leaving the app:
I can add an option to the app to tell it to keep awake when the phone is turned off or the map window moves to the background. Obviously, this will have a negative impact on battery life but it might be possible to minimise this by having it only check for position updates every minute or so while the screen is off.
Map key
There is a PDF key on the OS website, which I will add a link to. I'll need to check with them whether or not I can distribute this with the app.
Lock / Screen Off Time
Will add an option to override this too, since it's one of the things that's annoying me about the app.
Feedback always appreciated!
I'm really impressed with OS Maps, David. It's incredibly polished for an app still (time-wise) in its infancy. Thanks and congratulations.
Btw, your instructions for setting up a custom URL were excellent. I'm using my own API key, tell the OS.
Al
Cheers Al! Would be eternally grateful if you get the chance to rate the app on Android Market and add a comment.
Kind regards,
Dave.
was thinking more of a pop up window for the map key if poss rather than a link , would make checking that your doing things right quicker rather then wating for the browser to load ............. a bit like the one for my location simple to get too .....
ooo and sorry about the snigger but user names seem too get harder to come buy espically on a large site like this
Just take a copy of an OS map with you until you remember what the essentials are. They are not that hard to remember and most are pretty self explanatory TBH.

Sorry I thought the idea was not to have to take a map with me ?
Or to have to buy a map at all ?
Just buy this app far cheaper
It is of course
I'm say use one to learn the key and then stop using it.
Essentially there are not that many things you really need to remember and most are pretty self explanatory.
This is probably obvious, but please don't rely on any electronic map as your sole navigation aid, in circumstances when you are really relying on it, if you see what I mean... in those circs, you need a backup that can't fail (and know how to use it).
lecture over
Oh yeah !
First if all a big thanks for this amazing app. I just wanted to enquire whether you believe that the speed of finger scrolling can be increased or not. It's a little painful at the moment in my opinion.
Hi Mansn,
At the moment, I don't believe that it can. The program is capturing touch events, converting them to mouse movements, and passing them to the Javascript to move the map. I think the speed is poor due to the limited brain power of the Hero when it comes to Javascript.
On the bright side, it's something that should improve as Google make changes to their WebKit engine to speed up the Javascript side of things.
I could also map the trackball to move the map around - this would be smoother, I think, but not quite as easy to use.
Cheers,
Dave.
im confused
wot is now free ? that wasnt free before
The whole app is free. It used to be £4.99.
Nice! But why?
Ordnance Survey disagreed with my interpretation of some of the clauses in their developer agreement. Rather than jeopardise the access of anyone who'd bought the map, I decided to make it free.
The alternative would have been to pull it completely.
OS Map 1.2 now available!
Changes in this version:
Bug fixes:
* Fixed waypoint compass - now points in the right direction. Ahem.
* App no longer crashes if no location sources available (e.g. GPS and Wireless Locations turned off).
* Spelling of "Centreing" altered following widespread criticism.
* "Loading" screen no longer gets stuck. Hopefully.
New features:
* Search - returns results from the Ordnance Survey Gazetteer, ordered by distance.
* Waypoints updated to allow custom names (thanks to Simon Harper for suggestions).
* Quota checking (Preferences -> Check Remaining Quota).
* Added emergency position information if no internet connection - this provides your current grid reference for location on a paper map or the emergency services.
* Option to keep screen on while getting position fix (power on/off works as normal).
* Customise information text colour
* Disable loading screen (bug should be fixed, but added option anyway).
* Android 1.6 (Donut) compatible.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Old waypoints will not be saved when upgrading. It is recommended that important points are copied out and reinserted into version 1.2 using the grid reference.
Screenshots:
Features:
* Nearly all OS Map scales available (including 50,000).
* Touch-scrolling - simply use your finger to drag the map around.

How to get it:
OS Map is completely free and available to download from the Android Market, Slide Me, and my own server. If you already have version 1.1, running the "Check For Updates" option will automatically update you to 1.2.

OS Map is took a lot of time and effort to develop, and is available for free. If you find the application useful and are able to make a donation, I'd really appreciate it. Donate here.

1. Email Ordnance Survey and request that they increase the tile quota for free applications. The limit is arbitrary, and since OS is a government-funded organisation, probably unnecessary. This is my preferred option.
2. Make significant changes to the publicly available server-side code (as per the Developer Agreement) and use the custom server support in the application. You must not (and I do not encourage it) do this purely to circumvent the quota restrictions imposed by Ordnance Survey.
Thanks very much for your continued work, David.

Roll on "the holiday season"!
When showing off the app in person over a lunch, I had a comment about wanting to see excerpts with the titles in the items listing screens. While this isn't something I would personally want on my portable screen, would anyone else use this functionality?
Looks nice and would love to see a WM6.5 or Android version. No plans to move to WP7 for me.

Just want to say it looks very smooth and functional. Keep it up!! Looking forward to the release of WP7 to use your app.

That was my thought as well, but if its only one person who wants it, I'm not sure its worth the development time.
Definitely it's not one person, it's critical functionality for me as well in an RSS reader (not that I'm a potential user of a Google reader but still).

Tada. It's an option in settings now.
This looks great.
I love to see that some devs, like you, started creating apps already. This gives me good hope of the ammount of apps at launch, and the first few weeks after that.
Now for something else:
Does your app make use of the chosen background- and accent color?
If you could implement that, it will share the same style as one's startscreen.

Yes, it uses the theme you select in settings. The accent color is used for status labels, selections, unread indicators, and read indicators at 30% opacity. Since everything in the App is alpha based, any new themes are added should be supported without modification, too. I wanted to make sure the App felt as much a part of the OS as possible, and I will be continuing that theme throughout all my apps.
I've also added in some nice transitions when moving between articles, too.
Would this be a freeware, or a paid application?
This looks great! I'm so excited for this app!
I'm an iPhone user who will be switching to WP7 when it comes out and gets a good Google Reader app. As an avid Reeder iPhone app user, these features are a must:
Offline reading support
Ability to star items from the list screen without having to open the item. Reeder implements this with an incredible swipe function. Screenshot attached.
Ability to share items through other services (Facebook, Twitter, Read It Later, etc.). Screenshot attached.
Thank you!

Do the tiles stay live?
Good app, but let me ask you something, Is it system rule that this aplication cannot make real IE shortcuts on the main page? This is the second app I saw it, when I tap on the internet page shortcut, first black screen for few seconds appears, and after that the page is opened in the IE. Is impossible to make it without black screen? Thanks

Not sure what you mean, but it depends on the tile type.
Connection settings tile will show current status of WiFi and Cellular if you switch them through this tile (bluetooth and airplain mode do not show status because status is not available for developers).
Countdown, Quote and Picasa tiles are updated through background agent so they are live.
All other tiles are static because of the nature of those tile types.

Unfortunately it is not possible. This is what happens behind the scenes when you tap on "IE shortcut" that is created by custom application:
1. Custom application is opened (that's where the black screen comes from)
2. Application calls what Microsoft named "web browser task" and that is when page is opened.
There is no other way to open a web page from custom application.
Since opening an application takes a few seconds (even if it is completely empty) that is where delay comes from.
Hey, just want to let you know, I bought your app. Works great so far - really like some of the tile styles you've come up with, especially the "To Do" and "Note" types.
Good work!
Although I got some really nice comments on my mail for this app, I am also getting some bad reviews. Very often people say it is useless. I don't think it is useless but I need someone who does think so to post a detailed explanation why is that so. Maybe trial version does not show the real value of this app, but I need more details because "it is useless" just doesn't give me enough info to understand it.
So if you think it is useless please post why do you think so.

Ok, I think I figured this one. These are the two main reasons:
1. People often think this app replaces original Start screen so they just want to show their disappointment. Well this is not possible even for device manufacturers. So, no this is not what this app do. But it does allow you to create some really really nice and useful tiles.
2. There is a problem with the Marketplace which causes paid application to act as a trial or in some cases users can not download application they just bought, they get some error. Microsoft is currently not doing anything about this, but most of the time solution is to reinstall the application. But download of app should be initiated from the phone instead of Zune. Because it seems that is what causes the problem.
A lot of people who bought this app ask me where are their 14 tile types. They can see only four.
Apparently something is not intuitive enough. And that something is horizontal list. So for anyone who can't see more than four tile types it is because you need to scroll horizontally to see them. Otherwise you only see first four.
If anyone had problems with flashlight tile, that is now fixed.
I have the paid version and still do not see more than 4 tile either way i scroll?
Well that was with the 4 that was installed on the virtual start screen. You have to create the tile from the list at the bottom then pin to start or virtual start to see all 14.
Just to avoid confusion...there are 14 tile types (horizontal list on the tile editor page) but you can have more tiles (virtual start or phone start screen) than just 14 because you can create multiple tiles of the same type. Also some tiles types have subtypes (Flashlight - camera, display, both; Connection settings tile - wifi, cellular, bluetooth, airplane mode).
There were some problems with Quote tile (structure of the data source changed) and Website tile (favicon service is down) but that and some other small things are fixed.
