AKU and IPL/SPL - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario Software Upgrading

Can any body please explain me that what does AKU and IPL/SPL has to do with Wizard preformance>?? What are there uses and where can i find latest of them??(If they increase performance or benefit in any way) Does different AKU and IPL/SPL have different WM6.1 ROMs or all can be used. Thanks.TC

AKU
Adaptation Kit Update
Starting with Windows Mobile 5 Microsoft began a policy of updates similar to that of the desktop windows.
Rather the replacing the whole OS some functionality may be added.
For example AKU 2.0 introduced push mail.
These updates are distributed through the OEMs and are given to the consumer in form of ROM updates. Note that OEM may choose not to create an update with the latest AKU for their devices.
The latest AKU being used and upgraded by some OEM (Vendors) at present to the best of my knowledge is 'AKU3'.
IPL / SPL
IPL : Initial Program Loader
initial hardware bootup. just like a BIOS
SPL : Secondary Program Loader
it is the bootloader. jumps in the OS after Access the DOC and also starts the radio module.
The latest IPL/SPL at present which is floating around is 3.08,but its not considered to be very stable, still has some problems, especially when downgrading,it sometimes freezes and refuses to downgrade.I'm not sure but its not meant for wizard,it was ported from another PDA device,I don't exactly remember, but was patched for use in wizard, well,I might be wrong here, thats what I have known, may some expert might tell more about it,YES! it does give a very slight boost in the Boot up timings, not very significant boost, which is hardly noticeable though.
The most commonly used and confirmed stable IPL/SPL are 2.26 Bootloaders.

Thanks
Thanks alot about usefull information and what about "fabricated rom"?

General questions regarding the updgrading of ROMs

Ok, I will preface this by saying I am a veteran of Wallaby upgrading. I had one of those for a long time and probably used two dozen different ROMs on it. I cooked my own, and I nearly paper-weighted it or the radio stack a gillion times. I can definitely figure things out for myself.
That said, there is very little useful information as to how the upgrade process works with the Blue Angel. For those of us in the US on Cingular with the SX66, we have no update out at all, and we're very much stuck.
Things I don't get:
1. Extended ROM. Actually, I know what it is. What I don't know is, because it exists, does that mean that the base ROM is completely carrier independant? In other words, if I take an Imate or Qtek ROM and install that, but keep my carrier's Ext ROM, will things be the same? (assuming the same language, WWE) Are the base ROMs ever updated, or is it the extended ROM?
2. Where are the tools? The wiki is very out of date, and I don't know what the proper tools are to use. Do I write to an SD card, or do it over USB?
3. Is the radio stack updated by a first run program on the device itself, or is that done from the computer? Do RSU updates come with base ROM updates?
4. There seem to be new security measures taken to hinder our tinkering with the ROMs. How safe is it to change things (for purposes of "going back")? I dunno what else to ask about this...
Feel free to answer any or all of these questions, and for the love of God, don't tell me to search--I did.
Well said, but good luck getting answer around here.
I'll give it a try, but some answer could be plainly wrong, since I don't have a blueangel.
Blueangel and himalaya upgrading are very similar so this page is not so outdated:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HimalayaRomkitchen
But the mayor problem is indeed the new encryption method used :
ER2003edit or xda3nbftools don't support it (yet)
thus :
* you can't change the countrycode/language anymore
* you can't change the extended rom ms_.nbf
but the extenderomunlocker still works for Blueangel, although you have to use the Blueangel version, so after an upgrade, you can still manipulate the extended rom on your pda & hard reset.
BlueAngel Extended Rom unlocker
Blue Angel Romkitchen thread
thread about the new encryption
Answers :
1: You probably will get a country code error if you try a nk.nbf from another provider. Base roms and radio rom do get upgrades, but I don't know which one are already available for blueAngel. Base and Radio are carrier independant.
2 : Tools : see links above
3 : see himalayaRomkitchen
4 : You can make a backup on SD, but can't seem to find a link right now.

CING folks: AKU2.3 updated, now with Multi-installer + CF2

Howdy.
While waiting to get all the bits for AKU 2.5, I made up a quick and dirty little multi-installer. It is a menu-driven installer that allows you to choose from multiple ROMs and various components like radio and extended ROM. The decompressed files are removed when it finishes up.
I currently have it set with the following options:
1) Full AKU 2.3 custom ROM with OS, extended ROM, radio, and bootloader
2) Full AKU 2.3 custom ROM with OS, extended ROM, radio, NO bootloader
3) Radio only - Version 2.25 (the good one)
4) Radio only - Version 2.17 (It's really 2.07, from the 2.17 ROM)
5) An empty extended ROM which will erase whatever is there
If you already have a 2.x bootloader, you can choose option 2 which will not touch your current IPL/SPL. I agree with the general sentiment that the less you touch the BL, the better.
The AKU 2.3 OS ROM is the same as test2, but with these changes:
-fixed softkey applet mappings to calendar, create sms, and create mms
-added .Net Compact Framework 2
-added several themes
-made lame attempt at fixing the "Tiki of Doom" theme, which I really like
-disable "receive all incoming beams" by default to conserve electrons (can be re-enabled in Settings->Connections->Beam)
- Set dot11SupportedRateMaskG to 8 (support all wifi speeds up to 54Mbps)
-enabled Cleartype on landscape
-combined Cingular customizations and registry tweaks into a single cab
-updated the graphics in the flash app, and added some additional warnings and whatnot and so forth
This one weighs in at a hefty 131MB, so if you're on dialup, go make some waffles, err, no, take that trip to Nepal you've always dreamed of while it downloads. If you have broadband, go make them waffles.
Here she be:
ftp://xda:[email protected]_Custom_AKU2.3_Combo_Installer_V1.exe
The multi-installer is a work in progess - I want to evolve it into something a little more flexible so items can be plugged in our ganked out more easily. As a side project, I'm also working on automating the extended ROM build process. The result of this little obsession will allow you to automagically create, configure, and build a flashable extended ROM using a single interface. It might make waffles too...but I'm growing quite fond of tatertots lately.
And yes, I see the error I made with the title placement in the script..but I already started the upload. =)
Good work AGAIN mate.
Keep it up
I guess I need to search for bootloader, to see what that means, and how it affects what I should choose.
Hmm.. very, very cool. However I think I'll wait considering I am running TEST2. It's great to have options. Now if we could pick exactly what we wanted in the rom via checkboxes on a GUI menu, that would be the shizit. Thanks again Summiter!
.NET CF version?
Summiter,
What is the .NET CF 2.0 version? Is it the recently released .NET CF2 SP1?
Also, can you leave out the ClearType Landscape fix? This is the one fix I can't stand. ClearType does not work well in landscape mode because of the orientation of RGB elements inside LCD.
Nice. Just updated to the Test2 ROM, and was kinda hoping there would be an option to install a plain Cingular ROM without all the extra stuff that I can't delete (like the 2.17 version that I was using before). Any chance of uploading a 'clean' Cingular version of the 2.3?
Can I use this ROM
This is what I see when I turn the phone on:
IPL 2.25.0001
SPL 2.25.0001
GSM 02.25.11
OS 2.25.11.1
Does this make a differnece. When I swapped out my old one in the store they gave me this one and the guy at Cinglar told me it was a brand new one. I saw him get it out the store and on the box the manufacture date was this month June 2006... I have anohter 8125 that I purchased in April and I notice that the flash chips are differnt. How can I load Summiter's new ROM onto this new 8125 has anyone had any luck. I used Lockwiz from this site and it did do the SIM unlock but I can't tell if it did the CID unlock. Can this unit be CID unlocked. I don't want to fry my phone.
Followup
Also does this one include a CID unlocker
thanks, keep up the good work.

No. And you can't do CID unlock now since you upgraded to 2.xx ROM without unlock first. You have to downgrade to 1.xx ROM to do CID unlock (if that even possible with your stock ROM).
When you use lokiwiz to unlock your phone, CID unlock is a separate step. That is if you do SIM unlock as well as CID unlock, you have to run the tool twice.
Thanks Summiter! Quick Q: Is the .NET CF installed in ROM, or it is installed from Extended ROM onto regular storage flash? What is the final used space after the customizations are installed?

I have the same problem as you. The damn *.0001 uses a different flash chip and although it can be CID unlocked by using that IMEI website, i dont know if the ROMS are compatible. So i left mine alone, although i really want to upgrade.
Please help
I did not upgrade the ROM it came from the store like that.
IPL 2.25.0001
SPL 2.25.0001
GSM 02.25.11
OS 2.25.11.1
As you can see the flash chip in this phone is not the same.
Have you ever seen any of the other phones start up with these IPL and SPL numbers...
Please advise

You have the mysterious G4 chipset in your device. Do some thread searches for 2.xx rom unlocking... or pay to get your CID unlocked through an IMEI check. I was looking at doing a swap with my device, just to get the "better" chipset but now with the apparent problems with upgrading the device to a custom ROM, heh, forget it.
You could always go for the long ball and ask Cingular for the CID unlock sequence if they'll be so gracious to give it to you... but good luck.
Good work summiter on cookin' up a new installer. If you let me know what language you're working with in the console, I could probably work with you on a VB GUI interface with what the users want, and a truly customizable EXTROM type of menu checkbox system. Been a while since I've dinked around in VB, but its easy as pie (prefer C++ personally).
okay
Okay so if I use summiters new rom the one that says i don't need to use the bootloader will this work on my phone. and will i be able to upgrade to the new officeal releases from cinglar when they come out.
this makes littel sense why would they make such a change this may fry alot of phones seeing how most customers don't have a clue.

No SP1 - I'm waiting a bit to see how things flush out with it..it just came out of beta recently. And for all the CF2 apps I see commonly, SP1 doesn't provide any benefits. I will probably have SP1 in the next build, be it AKU 2.3 or AKU 2.5.
You're right about CT in landscape..looks fuggly. I'll back that one out for the next ROM.

CF2 is in the ROM. The registry entries for it however are added via cab file because I'm trying to keep CF2 a bit portable until I get it into AKU2.5. Setting up the registry in the ROM itself takes more time than I had to throw at this, and has to be done in each ROM build. The end result is the same though - the big bits are in ROM.

Faria 3.2 Htc Wizard Rom Real Issues-report Here

DUE to the first thread been turned into another unlocking one I had no choice but, to close the project.
But I feel that it is unfair to the people that respect my work an appreciate it.
The response to the rom has been overwhelming!!!! I never see this kind of response to a rom since the blue angel days
once again this thread been trashed with crap.rom is no longer available.next realease is pending.got better things to do with my time.plus time job is takeing most of mine time now and with x-mas coming, gonna get worst. when im ready i will contact the testers.no more tester are neede at the moment.
if you experience power-ups with push email folow.this;
now for users that have the device powering up when push email activated,i have been doing some testing;
i setup my push email [web2mail]
now i have setup the device security with a password,so when it comes from stand-by,will ask for it,
then a setup devicee lock in batterie status to also lock the device [see pictures]
what can i say i works fine.
when i receive an email from my server ,it notefys-me with the email sound ,but the device does not power up as reported.
now when the device lock time out is up,the device wakes up to lock itself
and the powers down in 1-2 seconds -this is normal in this rom atleast.
how to the date in the top right corner ?
use registry wizard[included in the rom] to remove the date or time
to use default clic sound download the file below
remove the .zip from the file name as it's just a cab...thanks dr.p
whats is in my rom?
unlcoking problem
people don't get it and it is really easy to unlock CID if they really follow the threads that there are. This thread says it clearly what u do and it is really easy to do it. Most of the people have update tool problem they can solve that with wizard_ROM update utility_noID file on the FTP site of the XDA. They can just put it to the unpcaked faria RC1 file and run it after unlocking CID. Two steps simple and cristle clear !!

LOL! So you will select us according to whether or not we have something intelligent to say. Well, I am about to put your 8mb rom on my MDA (right now using the RISIDRO rom loaded on top of the t-mobile official 2.26 rom) and will let you know what I think. I will be sure to say something smart. I will just blow you away with my intelligence and technical prowess.
I would like to see some articles on the page-pool size thing though. That's a new one to me. Check my post in the original thread (#419). Anyone wanna point me in the right direction? I can only find how-to's and not any reasons as to why one would do this...
So uh ... how do I unlock my phone? I did not get any keys. Are they on the stylus somewhere? I gotta go download a computer.

I faria since i`m new in this all new stuff of cooked rooms and extended roms etc; all that i can do is asking how can i help you on your journey, just tell me how i can donate you something for you to continue the great job that i have the oportunity to see in this forum i will be pleased to help with anythig to honor your Portuguese contribute to the XDA, continua o bom trabalho e ficarei a aguardar pelo "lançamento" da tua nova room EXCELENTE TRABALHO.
well I told you I would let you all know if there was a difference that I noticed between the 8mb and 12 mb with the voicemail issues and in-call issues.
with the 12, sometimes in a call, buttons would become usless and had to soft reset to hang up. same thing with the 8.
with the 12, voicemail icon would not go away after voice mail deleted. havnt seen that with the 8 yet.
other than that, speed is good in both, and everything works like a charm.

I hope your donations will provide you with at least the ability to take a night off and go to dinner or maybe get a massage to help you forget the newbie questions. I will be sending a donation as well. You have provided an outstanding ROM that has rivaled (and beaten) multi-m(b)illion dollar companies core and "upgrade" roms.
To all those that wish to ask newbie questions, leave faria's threads dedicated to the enhancement and ultimate release of one of the best ROMS for a PPC phone alone.
The least you could do is create your own thread and post your questions there.
I hope I may be considered for future testing granted my moderately new questions have not been classified as non rom related. If so, I will go study some more and apply to faria U at a later time
G4s and the ROMs
Faria, I think I am onto something here. From what I am reading in the posts, and from what you and I discussed the other day about my extended rom not loading correctly, I think and G4 with IPL/SPL ABOVE 2.17.0001 have a greater degree of security. Again, reading the posts in your other thread, it seems a handful of G4 owners could indeed install your rom fully, while the other half would only get the OS. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am starting to see a pattern.
First and foremost I would like to thank Jose for all the time and effort that he put into making this great rom. If and when you come to NYC I am taking you out and getting you twisted VIP style! But enough ass kissing and lets get to bussiness.
I have had very minor issues.
The mms did not work for me with the settings that I had from tmobile USA. I did get them to work when I got some of the settings cabs from the 2.26 custom extended rom. I did run the auto config that was included to set the network settings.
After installing all the software extras that was included to check how they worked, I have not been able to keep the phone off. When I say off I mean the backlight staying off when nothing is running. I have tried using the XP feature to turn the light off but it doesnt keep it off either. This could be something that I did so I may just reflash and install everything one by one to see where the problem comes from.
I also have noticed some signal problems but I think that was more of me installing those cabs from the 2.26 rom
Any help is appreciated.
one issue i have noticed is right before the device wakes up it white screens for 2-3 seconds then loads the today screen.. i dont know if this is a issue as i have not seen it really affect anything but i figured id let u know.

i mean your AKU 3.2 RC1.
Let me tell you the whole process that i followed to have a
better understanding:
1. ROM before upgrading:
-IPL 2.25
-SPL 2.25
-Radio 02.47...
-OS 2.26 (Shogun_A_La_Card's ROM)
2.What i see after upgrading to your new ROM:
-IPL 2.25
-SPL 2.25
-Radio 02.25.11
-OS 2.26.10.2
3.The proplem that i encountered:
when ROM upgrade finished, the device automatically
restarted and asked me if i wanna run the autorun files
(the installation of Ext_ROM, i know that) and i certainly choosed Yes.
The installation process went smoothly to its nearly end then a
error dialog box poped up with :"/Windows/autoconfig.exe doesnt exist"
,the only thing i could do is to choose "ok".The device restarted and
what i find after that is a new OS 2.26.10.2 without the EXt_ROM.
I downloaded both 8MB and 12MB pool versions but it gives me
the same result for both.
Please help me me on :
1.How to correct those problems.
2.How to upgrade my SPL and IPL to the newest versions?I stay the same(2.25) even when i upgraded the device to 2.26.
Thank you very much for any help.
Was your phone CID unlocked prior to the install? It seems that you have a G3 so the other thread on unlocking should have been done first. (You may have done this prior to another ROM but I am to tired to think about that...) Good luck!

Urgent helps needed!
So i bricked my Cingular 8125!
I just wanted to upgrade my ROM to the newest AKU 3.2 from Faria.
I did ungrade and errors arised as i described above.
I was told that the fone hadn't been CID unlocked.
I did as what described in lowikiz
-downgrade the rom,
-run enablerapi.cab on my device
-run lowikiz 0.2b
-choose CID unlock
Restarted the fone, what i saw was:
IPL 1.01
SPL 2.25
GSM 2.47.11
OS 3.0.0
There're only two things fulfill me,that's GSM and the OS.I wanted the
IPL and SPL should be 2.26 or later version.
What i did then :
-Downgrade again (hoping that i forgot to SIM unlock)
-run enablerapi on my device
-run lowikiz 0.2b
-choose unlock
And when the fone restart.
What i saw was:
IPL 1.01
SPL 1.01
GSM 1.x.x
OS 1.05.x
when the installation completed, i upgraded the ROM again to AKU3.2
everything went smoothly until it finished. The fone restarted and what i saw was:
IPL 1.01
SPL 1.01
<blank, no GSM version, couldnt believe that>
OS 3.0.0.0
the device kept running until the installation completed.
It restarted again and stopped running. What i can see now is just
nice background and blinking (waited for nearly 15 mins but no futher responses)
IPL 1.01
SPL 1.01
OS 3.0.0.0
It couldn't get further.
I think i bricked my Cingular 8125.
So could you helpers, experienced users help me with that?
Can i fix it?Or can HTC fix it?
Thank you very much!
Hello faria. I said eariler that this was a great rom. I think i have found a minor annoyance, i wouldn't call it a bug. It is related to spb time at least I'm pretty sure it is. I get the calnot.exe error every now and again and the cannot locate the spbtime.exe on reset. Its strange everything still works as it should. I think someone else had this problem in the other thread. I thought is was because spb time was loaded on the mem card and the fact that windows is sometimes late in loading it. So my next step was to move it to the sys mem. Same problem, I guessing it is on spb to fix this. I was probably not designed to work well with aku 3.2. Other than I that i could not find any real problems, except one time i uninstalled spb time and i oculd no longer sync. easliy fixed by hard reset no prob. I'm using 12mb pool. I also used your registry tweak program and set all the cache to the highest settings. Do you think that is a bad idea for this pool size. Have noticed some slow down in performance i don't know if the two are related.
thanks for the great rom again man!!
appreciated

Have noticed some slow down in performance i don't know if the two are related.
thanks for the great rom again man!!

i mean your AKU 3.2 RC1.

Thank you very much!

there is a fix for that in page 7-8 in the old thread
I gotta go download a computer.

nice try.but no dice

will upgrading IPL/SPL help?

Sorry that I post this here under this title, but I think that it is on it's place here.
I have a Qtek9100 (G4) with IPL/SPL 2.17.001 GSM 02.25.11 and OS 4.0.0.0.
I can connect this phone to my bluetooth device but when I get a call from someone. I only get the number without the + in front of it...
(hope you understand it e.g. I get 32474123456 instead of +32474123456)
According to Pioneer the Qtek is the problem, but I can connect without any problems to a Parot3100. Another phone (e.g a Nokia) has the same problems... But anyway, Pioneer says it's the Qteks fault...
Do you think upgrading the IPL/SPL will upgrade the Bluetooth? AND is it possible to upgrade the IPL/SPL on a G4 device? (I've read a lot of stories about bricking your device, so...)
thanks in advance for all the help
If you choose certain specific Carrier ROMs such as the German T-mobile AKU3.3 ROM then you CAN upgrade a G4's IPL/SPL as these new upgrades cater for both G4s and G3s. However this is unlikely to affect the performance of your bluetooth - the only 2 things I think that could possibly benefit a general user are a faster boot up (marginally if possible) or ability to upgrade to a newer ROM. I don't advice upgrading till absolutely necessary - especially any method using shell tool of Vista.
ok tnx...
I will wait until really necessary to upgrade...

I agree that you want to leave the IPL/SPL alone if you have a G4 phone. That does not mean you can't upgrade the OS or radio roms to improve things, just means you need to look around (quite a bit) and learn what it means before you start doing anything.

A few general questions

Hi,
I am planning to get a Diamond but would have a few general questions and have to admit I am a bit overwhelmed by the information to be found here, so I hope someone could help me a bit.
What exactly is the SPL?
I found some information at http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=SPL Questions?, however am still not quite sure what it is doing. As far as it seems it is similar to a x86 BIOS which gets started at the boot process by something like a FPL (First Program Loader) and then takes care of starting the actual operating and also has control of installing/flashing a new one. Is this correct? Entering the boot loader then probably means skipping to load the operating system and entering a kind of command shell of the SPL, right?
What does a SoftSPL?
To me it seems it is nothing installed but to WM a regular application which actually exits WM and allows, respectively, performs direct hardware access, which probably serves to install a HardSPL to overcome any restrictions the original system SPL is setting, right?
Do I always need to install a new SPL?
If I get an open/unlocked Diamond and want to install third party ROMs I suppose I need to install a new SPL nonetheless as the original one always checks the ROM vendor. Is this correct?
How can I flash?
Do I always need a connection from ActiveSync or can I flash directly from the phone's flash memory without an actual connection to a PC?
Thank you.
Can nobody confirm or correct my assumptions or has further information?
Having read http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=416211 some questions have been semi-answered but new ones arrived .
The HardSPL does not seem to be the official term, but is the name of the "hacked" SPL to skip vendor id checks, correct?
(btw, if I buy an open/non-locked Diamond is it CID locked as well?)
The FPL I referred to previously seems to be actually the IPL which would be the actual BIOS comparison I mentioned previously, right?
Is there a reason why there is an IPL and a SPL? I guess the former can never be flashed.
Why is there the need for different HardSPL versions? Shouldnt they all do basically the same basic steps? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2437385&postcount=27 mentions changes by HTC, but even then shouldnt an updated HardSPL be enough?
It seems it is not really possible to flash/update from the internal memory but an ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center connection is necessary.

You can found many information in WIKI:

I'm only able to answer to question 4, and it's possible to flash from internal memory:

The SPL seems to be started by the IPL (what I referred to as FPL previously) and can boot the actual operating system but also flash new ones.

HardSPL is actually the name of the modified/hacked SPL available from here, which allows the flashing of non-official ROMs. As long as you want to install official ROMs (from HTC or your provider, if branded) the modified SPL should not be necessary. For all other ROMs it is.

As far as it seems there are not as many versions from different people as I thought but only different version numbers, which seems to be due to different versions shipped with the devices. Generally the newest version seems to be recommended, however sometimes a previous one might work better.
Apart from version numbers there are however two actual different HardSPL versions, one which only allows signed ROM package and one which accepts all. The former is the more secure one, as only signed (and so by the xda-developers.com community approved) ROMs can be installed.

http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=SPL Questions? seems to provide a good explanation.
A SoftSPL seems to be a workaround if the system's SPL does not allow the flashing of a new SPL. It is a WM application which you need to run on your phone and runs as SPL, allowing to install a new SPL on the machine.

The default SPL coming with the device only allows ROM installations from the official vendor (either HTC itself or the provider if it is branded). As long as you install only those official ROMs you shouldnt need to install HardSPL.
All other ROMs (in particular those here) need HardSPL however.

As Andrea already mentioned flashing the Radio and ROM from the internal memory is possible, flashing the SPL itself is not as far as it seems.
