General questions regarding the updgrading of ROMs - MDA III, XDA III, PDA2k, 9090 Software Upgrading

Ok, I will preface this by saying I am a veteran of Wallaby upgrading. I had one of those for a long time and probably used two dozen different ROMs on it. I cooked my own, and I nearly paper-weighted it or the radio stack a gillion times. I can definitely figure things out for myself.
That said, there is very little useful information as to how the upgrade process works with the Blue Angel. For those of us in the US on Cingular with the SX66, we have no update out at all, and we're very much stuck.
Things I don't get:
1. Extended ROM. Actually, I know what it is. What I don't know is, because it exists, does that mean that the base ROM is completely carrier independant? In other words, if I take an Imate or Qtek ROM and install that, but keep my carrier's Ext ROM, will things be the same? (assuming the same language, WWE) Are the base ROMs ever updated, or is it the extended ROM?
2. Where are the tools? The wiki is very out of date, and I don't know what the proper tools are to use. Do I write to an SD card, or do it over USB?
3. Is the radio stack updated by a first run program on the device itself, or is that done from the computer? Do RSU updates come with base ROM updates?
4. There seem to be new security measures taken to hinder our tinkering with the ROMs. How safe is it to change things (for purposes of "going back")? I dunno what else to ask about this...
Feel free to answer any or all of these questions, and for the love of God, don't tell me to search--I did.

Well said, but good luck getting answer around here.

I'll give it a try, but some answer could be plainly wrong, since I don't have a blueangel.
Blueangel and himalaya upgrading are very similar so this page is not so outdated:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HimalayaRomkitchen
But the mayor problem is indeed the new encryption method used :
ER2003edit or xda3nbftools don't support it (yet)
thus :
* you can't change the countrycode/language anymore
* you can't change the extended rom ms_.nbf
but the extenderomunlocker still works for Blueangel, although you have to use the Blueangel version, so after an upgrade, you can still manipulate the extended rom on your pda & hard reset.
BlueAngel Extended Rom unlocker
Blue Angel Romkitchen thread
thread about the new encryption
Answers :
1: You probably will get a country code error if you try a nk.nbf from another provider. Base roms and radio rom do get upgrades, but I don't know which one are already available for blueAngel. Base and Radio are carrier independant.
2 : Tools : see links above
3 : see himalayaRomkitchen
4 : You can make a backup on SD, but can't seem to find a link right now.

Help for Newbie

Hi,
Just wanted to get BT working well on my PDA2k.
Did the Radio upgrade as told in wiki to 1.10 - as I saw a few comments saying 1.12 was unstable.
WEnt through fine, except now I cannot get a phone signal at all and the phone call buttons don't work.
What is the best thing to do? Should I just do the whole upgrade to 1.40. I read that the phone was locking up on this and was not confident to do the fix.
Appreciate your help.
(Going back to 1.22 for now as I have now wasted 4 hours precious work tome just trying to get the device to work as it originally should!)
Russel
W know have 3 threads on the 1.40.
All seem to post errors with that rom in some minor way.
Myself I went for the 1.40 converted to type I and have not added the ext rom (yet). also have 1.12, in all I am happy with it as I have not come across any of those issues (as i dont use the camera, ect). So far Imate makes the best rom IMHO.

MDAIIIUser, which 1.40 rom are you using? The one from the original thread "New Rom 1.40 on FTP" or the one you converted from this thread "BA_WWE_14000_147_11200_Ship" ? There should not be any differences between roms i think, but i find there are some subtle variances. Is it possible that conversion can corrupt the final rom produced? Your converted rom seems to work better for me but still need a soft reset now and then
converted to type I qtek 147.
It could be possible that conversion is corupt but dont think so, check wiki avlible roms and see the passed with new tool. all of these roms have been confirmed to work.
Sure I have issues with this rom but they are carry over from 1.02, 1.22, 1.31 and now 1.40. Most based on alarm issues as well as remove from power were i get locked due to i-pass (i think)
I will do a hex file compare on the 1.40 ce from qtec and see if i see anything.
Type I and Type II
Thanks for the reply - appreciate it.
Which download was it that you used - the one from wiki?
Also what is the difference between type I and type II?
Cheers

Type I and Type II cont'd
Thanks for the reply - sorry a bit slow here.
I get there is a difference between types according to the origin - however how is it relevant? If I am coming from 1.22.162 (Type I) ext ROM should I make sure I only install a ROM upgrade that is type I? :?
Cheers
Russel
Clear text.
Type I roms work with tool xda3nbtool.exe
Tpye II roms give you a header error when used with tool.
Thus you can only upgrade type I roms unless you know the country code fix that seems to work.
Wiki is my prefered choice for downloading roms, in the case of the 1.40 I used the thread to download the converted 1.40 to type I rom which was not hard for me as I posted it. (its the qtek 1.40.147)
Thanks
Thanks MDAIIIuser. It is clear now.
Regards
Russel
MDAIIIUser, i saw your reply in another thread after comparing the 1.40 roms. How about the first 1.40 rom posted in this file BA_1.40_radio_1.20_untested_extrom.rar on the ftp? This should be the same as all the others right? I seem to have had fewer problems with this rom than the converted to type I qtek 147. My main problem seems to be turning the phone on after being in flight mode, losing network signal and GPRS sometimes not connecting. All need a soft reset to resolve. The from BA_1.40_radio_1.20_untested_extrom.rar gave me problems when trying to turn on wifi. Im using radio 1.12.
efjay
It takes me just over an hour to download roms of this site which I know is my problem.
I dont like working with baked roms as I can't post them to wiki as they are not complete,
I can't cook the Ext Rom as it to is not original,
I can't post the ext rom in wiki
and thus the hour download is a waste of my time.
I seem to spend enough time updating wiki and finding new roms on the web so sorry the answer is no I wont check that rom untill I see a original ship.exe.
You could though
MDAIIIUser, sure i would be happy to. Im not too sure what tool i should use to do a comparison. Im reading wiki, if its there ill find it. thanks
My choice would be ultracompare
http://www.ultraedit.com/
you will notice that the header is different this is due to the file timestamp and date.
Windows media player v10
MDAIIIuser or anyone else.
I upgraded my CE ROM to 1.40, however I cannot get windows media player to pick up any of my music files as valid .wma files. It also seems to be endlessly looking for a skin.
Any suggestions?
Cheers
Russel
read something about that in one of the 3 threads on the 1.40 (well I think I did)
How to fix
DId a search for WMP problems - couldn't find anything useful at a quick glance. Any ideas how to resolve it?
Cheers
Russel
MDAIIIUser, i downloaded ultracompare and can see there are differences with all the 1.40 roms but the output doesnt make sense to me. I guess ill try all the roms and if there is a difference it should show up. thanks for your help

I'm really confused about what to upgrade to. Need help.

I have a PDA2K I bought from Expansys a couple months ago and I use it in the US with TMobile. I upgraded the BT to .0035 and last night upgraded the Radio to 1.10. I'd like to upgrade the ROM from 1.22.126 to 1.?. I've read every upgrade post in here and that is where I think I went wrong. I'm really confused on what I need to upgrade to now. Too much information.
Given the above information, can someone tell me what version is best for me? I looked on the FTP site and there was too many choices for this little newbie.
Thanks,
Tom
The highest is 1.40 with radio 1.12, there are 4 threads on the 1.40 and it seems a lot of people are going back to the 1.3x manich cooked or 1.31 arabic.
Its a free world, do what you feel is best.
Since I've seen your name all over the place, accompanied by very authoritative posts, can you "recommend" which one I should use? I'd like to go with the 1.4, but I'm not sure what file(s) exactly I need. I thought I did, but as I started reading more and more threads I got more confused. It seems like there are a couple different 1.4s out there. I already upgraded my BT and Radio, but I'm not sure if I need the ROM and/or the Extended ROM. I've looked at the various files on the FTP site and I get confused....my wife says it happens often with me.
While I've seen HOW to do it, I'm not sure WHICH one I need. Might you be kind enough to point out what I need?
Thanks,
Tom
Ce rom
On wiki download the qtec 1.40 type I CE Rom only file (avalible roms)
on wiki in the radio upgrade ->download the type I upgrade files
on wiki in getting started download the ->xda3nbtool.exe as welll as -> fix bat.
Put them all in the same dir, Fix and then flash the rom as per wiki.
EXt Rom
Now you need the ext rom 1.40.147 in the kitchen availble roms
on wiki download -> unlock tool in kitchen tools
Unlock, flush old, add new, add your cust cabs, lock Hard reset.
BT 1.39 is part of 1.40 rom so DONT cook those files in your ext rom.

Here's my take:
1. Sometimes. You have to understand what you have before you download. Each string of posts generally refers to different ROMs. Until lately, the ROMs were the whole package (bootloader, Core OS, Phone and Ext ROM). Most folks want the latest OS possible, but want the phone part from an older ROM, so in some cases the phone part of the ROM has been split out as a separate installation. In other cases, Ext ROMs have been undated and distributed by themselves.
2. Depends on what ROM you've got. If you have the all-in-one type, everything gets wiped out and upgraded. Even if you do a backup, chances are its no good because the backup was for the old OS and is incompatible with the new OS. If you install just a phone or Ext ROM, the core OS and all your settings SHOULD be left alone. However just this week some goob couldn't run the right files in the Phone upgrade and nearly bricked his phone, then pissed all over the other guy trying to help...(reference the Great KeithT Rant of '06)
3. Assume you're talking about upgrading the Core OS and leaving the Ext ROM as is. Don't know of a way to do this--it hasn't been mentioned as a possibility in the Wizard upgrade forum in the past few months AFAIK. I think this is highly unlikely anyway, as the Core OS ROM is really in charge of everything. You'll want the match the Ext ROM with whatever Cell provider you have, and there are more than enough all-in-one ROMs to suit nearly every carrier. I'd suggest searching: "T-Mobile ROM upgrade" or whatever provider you have to get a Core OS/Phone/ExtROM all together.
4. Many applications are included in the Core OS ROM, like pocket Word, Excel, mail, etc. I think MSN is included in the Ext ROM, but not sure. Anyway, just got to try it and find out!
5. This is a little tougher. I recommend the latest Core OS matched with an Ext ROM for your cell provider. There is some debate over the best phone ROMs (see recent posts in this forum) depending on the towers in your area. Note, the latest Core OS doesn't necessarily have the highest version number. Someone leaked a Cingular ROM v2.25, then another TMo ROM v2.24 was actually a later build. Diff providers have different numbering schemes.
Good luck, read a bunch, and feel a little comfortable with what you're doing before you leap. Lots of folks here will help if you get in trouble, but be expected not have your head up your arse before asking for help!

2.21 IPL/SPL observation

Dear All,
I would like to share a bit more information on what I found regarding 2.21 IPL/SPL behaviour.
1. Now it is impossible to backup the rom from another machine with pre-2.21 ROM and then try to flash it into the machine by SD Card (i.e. use console mode to connect to the pre-2.21 ROM machine, execute r2sd, then push the SD card to the 2.21 machine w/o CID unlock and boot into flash mode (camera button), it will say 'Not allow update' in the status bar)
2. Now it is also impossible to backup the rom from 2.21 machine using console mode (i.e. r2sd), thus I got no way to extract 2.21 IPL/SPL from my machine. Again this is assumed the machine is not CID unlocked. Machine will say 'not enough security level blah blah....'
3. So what I want to know is- If a machine which is pre-CID unlocked, upgraded to ship rom 2.21+
a. is that still possible to dump the firmware out with r2sd?
b. Also will it accept rom flash in SD card dumped out from other pre 2.21 machine?
Hope we could sort out a solution to free all 2.21+ guys
Someone says its also related to the G3/G4 chip (version # 2.21.0001 means G4, .0000 means G3??) I have no clue on what is that though- anyone can provide us some enlightment?

No, they are just the software version and dont have any relation with the Chip.
Result from JAFWM
Open nk.nbf file with JAFWM v2.2 (Dopod Official Rom)
here is the result.

the anser to your question on point 3.a is yes.done it myself.now reflashing your device with another ones dump it may cause problems because it also flashes back the cid [whatever state it is] and since every device has a unique cid code that is related to the imei it may cause problems like the dreaded DATA CRASH one,but in other hand it could work.u just have to try to find out.if you need a unlocked dump let me know a got one ready to install.
How about the bootloader mode test result? anyone could provide?
Well I think there is a way and may be summitter can tell better.
one use typhoon nbf tools and remove the CID and save the nk.nbf and flash it to device.
secondly dump the rom parts with typho5 and just make a custom ROM with the same IPL/SPL with a new CE ROM...
I hope I am correct
That wont work, you have to try it out yourself. The main issue is if you got a machine comes with 2.21.0001+, then r2sd would not work. This is the essential step for any rom dump operation so far.
Typhoon NBF is even worse because since 2.0 (AKU 2) rom its not able to read by Typhoon NBF.
*faria: Is that mean you can still use r2sd to dump your rom even after your machine upgraded to 2.21+ ROM? Then if there is an O2 Mini S with such config updated, dump rom out, use typho5 to rebuild a new ROM without CID, chance is that we could use that to patch the unit with other rom versions.

yes you can still use r2sd in any rom above 2xxxx,but i do not use r2sd for my backups/restores, i use [wizBackup] because it bacups to sd and pc without any conversion required unlike r2sd.
i just made a sd backup of rom 2.23 and restore with out any problems.
rebuilding any rom will not work in a machine cidlocked because when we build the roms it requires the cid field to be blank,if it was that easy any modified rom like [sumiters] would do because all of those roms have the cid field blank when they are converted with nbf connverter.
to be clear about the part of the cid lock that every one is trying to unlock is not in the rom ,it is in the machine in a diferent adress [place if you like] itself so until someone cracks the cid area of the new roms there not much you can do.the problem is noone has the tools for the new roms to bypass cid.
the lokiwiz tool patches the cid area of the device only it doe nothing to yor rom.
so if you try to install a patched rom the machine will compare the cid code in the rom with the one in the machine if it does not match it does not install.1 way arround it to buid you own rom and put the machine cid code on the rom ,the it will install .but that means u cannot create a universal rom, it has to be 1 rom per singe machine with matching cid number.
and yes u can use typho5 to decode/incode 2.xxx roms with any problems,i have been using it i my roms without problems.

Hi Raskal,
If "Wizard is not such a big problem", why don't you keep with the spirit of xda-dev and share your observations and results on the G4 issues with the board?
There are two major areas where I think you have an opportunity to contribute to the community:
1 - Can you assist in the modification of the nb2nbf tool so that both G3 and G4 bootloaders can be rebuilt into an image?
2 - We need some guidance on CID unlocking 2.xx. What have you found in the BL that has made the usual process ineffective?
I'm assuming that since you are a member here, you're willing to give as much as take like the rest of us. I have a great respect for what you have done with various phones of the years, and appreciate that you are in business. However I hope that while you're here you will contribute to the free flow of information.

Quick question - does your ROM collection include any of the custom ROMs created by and for folks here on xda-dev?
well, at least he donates a fair bit to the site... machinagod!! When can we see Lokiwiz 3.x with CID Unlocking!!?
i guess if machinegod and others, did not post is tools and info here, some companys would have a dent in their revenue. and then one would think....

[Q] About ROM upgrade.

Hi all,
Excuse me if apparentely it's can seems I repeat old and answred question, but sincerely I have not yet sufficentely clear ideas on how I can flash my blackstone with an updated Rom.
I want remark that I have a decent knowledge on developing a program for W.M., but I confess that after read various threads and articles about, I remained in a great confusion yet!
The question:
I have a branded (Tim) Blackstone:
BLAC100 32M
SPL-1.13.0000
MicroP-BlackStone (Led) v6
Device Info:
ROM Version 1.13.401.0 (20428)ITA
ROM Date 10/25/08
Radio Version 1.09.25.14
Protocol Version: 52.49a.25.26W
This device ABSOLUTELY need to be upgraded to the Rom 1.56 (but first of all I WANT TO UNBRAND it).
After an initial problem (caused by the unricognized S/N), I dowloaded (using another S/N) from Htc the File:
RUU_BlackStone_HTC_ITA_1.56.408.0_Radio_52.62.25.34_1.13.25.24_Ship.exe
To upgrade my device, I want to preserve only the country and the language, because I read that it is necessary to preserve the A-Gps funtionalities (data changes country by coutry). Is it thrue?
I understood that I can't use it, cause the Tim brand of my device.
In my case only the brand is not matching, while the language and country are apparentely matching.
(But, why the "401" of my device is not matching with the "408" of file I downloaded? Can I use the file with this unmatching country code?)
1) - I have a great confusion on SPL, HSPL, SSPL, USPL.
2) - I have a great confusion because I not understood if Radio Rom upgrade and Rom upgrade are 2 different processes or not.
3) - Is the Rom version related (developed) for a specific Hardware version (as it is logical to think)?
4) - Is the Radio rom "country sensitive"? (As I think that each country have a different GSM Net).
5) - If want upgrade both radio and rom, what instrument exactely I need?
Please can you clear my ideas.... and doubts?
Thanks
Ignazio
Ok, you have managed to get an official HTC rom, you can also find some more here
If you use HSPL or USPL, this will allow you to flash the new rom. If you are intending on staying on the official rom, uspl will probably be the best option for you to use.
In response to your questions:
1) SPL - Second Program Loader is a boot loader after IPL (Initial Program Loader) often seen on smart phones and PDA's. SPL is similar to a BIOS in a computer and can be flashed and updated.
The difference between USPL and HSPL:
* HSPL is an user-modified SPL that you have to flash to your phone. It overwrites the existing SPL on your device with a "hacked" one so to say. It allows you to bypass the HTC certificate check and flash unsigned or CID-mismatching roms to your phone. You only have to flash it once and then you can flash roms anytime.
* USPL is a temporary solution. It takes advantage of an exploit in the existing SPL and then loads a modified one to memory, effectively allowing the same thing as HSPL. However, since this is only memory-resident you have to do it each time you want to flash unsigned or CID-mismatching roms to your phone, because this exploited state is lost upon reboot. With USPL you must still have the right version of the HTC SPL that is compatible with the rom you want to use.
* SSPL is just another method of getting to change the spl and is only really needed if you experience problems using one of the other methods.
Hopefully this makes it a little clearer for you.
2) It depends. The radio is in most cases included in the rom. The rom you are looking to use included a radio. This is shown by the 1.13.25.24 in the name of your rom, so if you install that rom it will also update the radio in a single process. You can however also only upgrade the radio and then it is done as a separate process and will not affect the rom.
3) All the roms are initially developed for a particular hardware configuration I would imagine, but there are many fantastic chefs here on xda who take roms meant for other devices and are able to port some of the components to a cooked rom which can then be used on a number of different devices.
4) Yes, radios are country and area sensitive, so what works well for one person in a particular area would possibly not work as well for you.
5) You will need to use either hspl or uspl in order to upgrade your radio (if you are using one intended for an HTC). Some people have taken radios from other devices such as the Omnia, but in order to flash these radios you need to do a security unlock of your device and there are special tools that allow you to do this, but this is really only a last resort if you can't find an HTC radio that works for you.
The steps to follow in order to flash are described in the Dummies Guide to Flashing (see link in my signature) and if you have any further questions, please ask them in that thread.

Read the Dummies Guide (link in my signature). If you have any more queries please post them in that thread as this one is likely to be closed down soon.
ROMS are a personal thing, so have a look at a few and read some of the more popular threads (ie the ones that keep popping to the top) and depending on the feedback received from users make a choice. Once you've flashed once it becomes addictive and you'll try a few before you find one that suits you.
another thing
after i follow all the steps from there all roms should work..after that finnishing them i start that rom update launcher that comes with every rom?
Continuing on Dummies Guide thread.......
