Hello,
would there be a possibility to port the rom from the upcoming s740 to the s730?
In order to get hardware accelleration, for example.
I don't understand much from rom porting. So I ask here!
gr. Rob
Instead of creating S740, HTC should improve S730. Now I feel conned by HTC - if you want good working phone, buy new one! Next smartphone or PDA, which I buy will not be from HTC as they treat their clients like this...

I am going to hazard a guess that it will be possible to port out the rom from the phone, overall the phone is the same, and has GPS enabled so if you can get whatever the end result of the GPS thread here said was missing from our phone the new rom might add the software support for that to make it work.
The video exceleration might work, but the added issue is the new interface is going to be even more memory intensive and the new phone has tripple the memory. I am sure you could cut that out of the import and see about just porting the driver's for the acelleration but that driver might not support our hardware and might not work properly.
Will have to wait and see what happens when people get their hands on it and start tinkering.
All I can say is that they lost me as a customer for a long time (in these days you never say never)
The only way my phone became usable is by installing 6.1 from here.
I am still waiting for an update on the S730 that will make memory use logical.
There is no way in hell I am giving these guys any more of my money for the "improved version" of my already expensive phone.
I am going back to Palm for the Palm Treo Pro and at least suffer a little bit from faults of another company
J
We Touch Cruise owners felt the same way about the release of the Diamond. Our device is 6 months old. Instead of any fixes or updates, they release the Diamond. Furthermore, they tell us that better multimedia support will be in the form of newer devices (as opposed to much needed product updates).
Our official WM6.1 release isn't even here yet, but both the older TyTn II and the newer Diamond owners have seen ROM updates, with the Diamond having full 3D driver support and the TyTn II getting some support.
Sounds familiar indeed. Seems HTC priors the release of new mass sellers like the Diamond and the Touch pro and therefore won't work on any software updates or anything on other devices like the Touch cruise or the S730. This should be more balanced in my opinion.
They might lose a lot of customers that own HTC devices with shortages like the RAM memory leakage issue of the S730. The fact that the S740 has 256 (!!) MB RAM shows they do admit this RAM shortage of the S730. I think a 140 grams smartphone with just a 2,4 inch screen is still a bit too heavy/small these days.
All I can say is that I am very curious about a ported rom from the s740 for our s730's.
I it evident that a lot of s730 owners are very frustrated and dissappointed in HTC, as it is hard to keep ONTOPIC. Most posts are overloaded by negativity (which is justified).
For me the s730 is as close to perfect in terms of form factor as you can get. So I am not looking for a new device with more features. I want better usability and stability of my s730. And, also very important, getting the performance out of the hardware that is in it.
gr. Rob
the s740 spec wise is almost identical to our s730. hopefully some chefs can pick apart the s740 ROM and get the good parts [maybe GPS and new weather sliding panel and other stuffs].
I've been google'n for 2 days and haven't been able to find anything worthy of an upgrade from a Kaiser ..
My mom needs a pda/phone and she wants my trusty Kaiser, but unless I find something worth having she's not getting it.
The Touch HD looks fantastic .. but .. isn't coming to the US [email protected]#[email protected]
Anybody know of something coming soon, available now I should be looking at ?
ATT Fuse doesn't look like any kind of an upgrade.
Thanks for your comments !
What I use the Kaiser for :
#1 Web Browsing
#2 VPN via PPTP to work network, and telnet to a as/400 machine from there
#3 Handful of WinMO apps that I use for various things (weather, poker blind timers, etc)
I occasionally talk on the phone too
hey man AT&T Fuze, it's called the Raphael on these forums, it's a sexy phone and has Opera 9.5 built in. and it can do everything the Tilt does minus some buttons and has a G-sensor
-Mike
Next to the KAISER I had the MWg ZINC II for a while. It had an incredible performance, much better than on the TYTN. However, there are 2 things I couldn't stand on that thing: no hardware softkeys underneath the screen and a weird keyboard with strangely arranged characters. Other than that it was a great device. I still would have gotten used to its keyboard but I couldn't stand the fact that it did not have any HW softkeys underneath the screen.
However, even though this seems to be an interesting question, I do believe that this thread is misplaced since you ask for something "that is not the KAISER"!
It might have been better placed in the GENERAL BOARD?

I guess I could run over to ATT and look at one. It just doesn't look all that appealing at first glance. I see nothing on it other than a VGA screen vs the tilt, and I'm losing the "tilt" function that I've grown to enjoy.
I don't think I'll ever use a G-Sensor for anything. I have opera 9.5 on the Tilt.
Maybe I'll like it better in-person.

I'm looking for opinions from current kaiser owners since they'll know what I'm replacing. I want something better than a kaiser. Only a kaiser owner would know what that is.
I never use my softkeys so I don't think losing them would be an issue.
I guess the Fuze might be an option but the screen on that thing looks smaller than a fuze. I want a BIGGER screen
Well, I upgraded from an 8525 to the Fuze, and am throughly dissapointed.
The screen is awesome, amount of memory is awesome, and the keyboard is awesome.
Everything else sucks. The hardware buttons at the bottom are extremely spotty. If you don't press the perfect spot, with the perfect amount of pressure, the device presses the wrong button for you.
http://http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446246&highlight=hardware+buttons
I flashed to the Elite ROM, and that made things a little better in general, but the usability of the device is getting me down.
So I'm off to research the Tilt/Kaiser.
I looked for what's the next upgrade after the Tilt/Kaiser but didn't find anything worthy. I think much of this stems from just how significant the upgrade the Tilt/Kaiser was from it's previous models, the 8525 and 8125.
I looked at the Fuze but while it does have some additional features and speed, it's not the leap ahead that the Tilt/Kaiser was. The Touch HD which you already found is the only thing I also found that I'd consider a worthy successor. I thought of buying one and having it imported but from everything I read the radio won't work here in the USA.
So for now and the foreseeable future, I'm still on my Tilt.

I think the radio works fine here, you just don't get 3G.
I'm not in a 3G area, so maybe I could overlook that. It seems like I tend to turn OFF 3G on those rare occasions when I am since it sucks the battery down so bad.
Touch HD looks very nice but maaaaaaaaan it's pricey !

I think the hardware for a G1 looks good, too bad it's running android and not winmo.
It's got everything I want. Nice display size, hardware keyboard, 3G support
Nobody took a look at the Touch Pro(Raphael) or Sony X1 ?
Touch Pro is the Fuze, which was mentioned in the first post.
Racer i would look in the Raphael Forum and see if the problems/complaints are going to affect you terribly, from what i gather i'll be happy with the upgrade.
Best of luck!

Mentioned Touch Pro in first post (att fuze)
Not really much, if any, of an upgrade.
Sony X1 might be possible, but it's SOOOO darned expensive !
Another option would be an unlocked Palm Treo Pro.... runs win 6.1, decent phone, same specs as the tilt I believe

I'm returning mine as well. The D-pad is useless when surfing the net, the keyboard is really cramped compared to the Tilt, and button placement very odd.
The screen is amazing and the amount of RAM phenomenal, but it isn't quite as fast as I'd hope for and there just aren't enough programmable buttons to make it useful for me.
When my ETEN Glowfiish M700 died I spent weeks debating -- do I spend $600 for a new Tytn II or do I go for broke and get a Touch Pro for $900?
In the end, while the features of the Pro sounded very nice, I decided I just better save some money and get the kaiser.
Very impressed with the Kaiser so far. Video slowness not-withstanding it is still much more responsive than the Eten. And there is certainly tons of help, software recommendations and more available on these very forums
I recently came into a little extra money, so I could get the Pro now if I wanted to. But I'm going to keep the Kaiser and wait to see what the WM7 machines look like next year -- or should I say in two years
Perfectly happy with my Fuze. TF3D, VGA screen, abundant storage room, extremely fast and responsive, absolutely love the hardware KB (many more buttons without having to press the FN key) and more. Suffice it to say, I am extremely happy with my Fuze. Very much so.

Guess I better just run over to ATT and play around with one (fuze). Maybe I'll like it better in person than I do in "spec sheet"

Tilt. Which I still have as a backup. Especially after my OIL fiasco.
EDIT:
Let me do say that the stock rom sucks. It is extremely slow and constantly lagging behind. I've flashed a new BlackStone radio and a custom rom and I absolutely love it. But let me emphasize, in the store, the Fuze is slow at best. It even has a ATT tab with all of their bloatware locked to that tab. However, NATF has already done a stock rom fixing most, if not all of the slow/laggy responsiveness. I have literally flashed every single rom already cooked for the Raphael/Fuze and found my favorite (today). This thing flies.

I agree, i'm completely satisfied with my upgrade to the fuze as well.
So......now that the IPhone stepped it's game up, is the tilt still a better device? I am happy with my tilt, but I must admit that the IPhone is now stepping up. Are Windows mobile phones still better than the IPhone? When the tilt 1st came out it was way better, but now the IPhone has GPS, Cut/Paste, 3G and all that + a great web surfing/media experience. Speak on it!
I was wondering the same question, particulary because of (my) v1615 lags (I read it's caused by bad drivers, but maybe I am wrong) and much better iphone screen - probably excellent for ebooks... Anyone?
The way I see it, iPhones set the standards for usability on PDA's. Due to their popularity a lot of developers write 'apps' for them, thus increasing it's popularity even more so.
However, Iphone is more of a 'toy-pda' It has non essential things and lacks some good qualitys WM have (Sync, Copy&pasta, Removable storage, etc).
Specs wise, the iPhone beats the Kaiser, I will admit I have had a bit of lag on my Kaiser untill I flashed a new rom. However, people shouldn't have to do that.
iPhones are quick and usable straight out of the box, WM needs a bit of 'getting used to'. Though that being said, WM has the potential to me modified for people like... us. We can cutomise our devices, change the operating system, they way it works ,etc. WM based devices are more of a Pocket Pc, as to the iPhone being a PDA.
In my opinion their both good in their own respects. However, I'd like to see how the new HTC Touch Pro 2 (aka Rhodium) competes with it. Especially with the launch of WM 6.5 / WM7. Which focus' on making WM more usable. The launch of WM's 'Appstars' (I Think) is a web service like the 'app store' However, M$ charge quite high fees for developers to host their applications. I don't know if it will take off or not.
To long didn't read: Their both good in their own respects.
As for useability I would say both phones are equal. Many applications for each, from gps to wifi, bluetooth etc. But the biggest downfall (and the reason I wont get an iphone yet) is the fact that you cant tether. There is no internet sharing option without jailbreaking your phone which probably voids your warranty. I travel alot so I use a program on my tilt called Walking Wifi Hotspot which shares my phones internet over the wireless. The program is priceless to me.
Just my 2 cents.
Jim

Aside from the fact , are you really comparing a brand new improved phone to a phone that is going on 2 years old ?
" Now that Dell has had a chance to improve their personal computers, does your MS-DOS machine still compare favorably to the new Intel Core i7 PC "
How stupid is it to compare a phone from 2007 to a phone from 2009
Thread is way past useless.
If you notice, I was referring to the Tilt or any other WMobile phone. the reason the focus is on the Tilt for me is because I own one.
On another note...if the thread is inappropriate, please delete and forgive me.

The logic to what Denco said still applies. This is a place to discuss the Tilt/kaiser/whateverthehellyoucallitinyourland, we aren't here to debate other phones, be it a year and a half old windows phone or a new one.
This forum is for the Tilt/kaiser/whateverthehellyoucallitinyourland..

Tilt / WM6 are the way to go if you need a business phone.
The iPhone (IMHO) is more user friendly and more fun. Also generally easier to work with.
Why Tilt/WM6 for business?
Applications: You don't like the mapping program in WM6? Just install a new one, or 7 new ones. Also applies to installing a new browser or mail program.
Multi-tasking: "Only one iPhone application can run at a time, and third-party applications never run in the background. This means that when users switch to another application, answer the phone, or check their email, the application they were using quits." - iPhone Human Interface Guidelines. This is an issue that iPhone will need to address some day. After using the iPhone this was my biggest complaint; albeit the lack of multi-tasking may make the phone appear to run smoother.
HSDPA & GPS - not currently implemented in the iPhone, although probably available soon with the next version.
Keyboard: Keyboard on the Tilt is pretty handy. iPhone keyboard interface is just ok.
I'd find a friend that's got an iPhone and ask to borrow it for a day, replicating the things you do on your Tilt.
KEYBOARD! That is the one thing that I absolutely feel like I need. I do alot of typing on my tilt and think the keyboard is critical. The "tilt" part of the slide-out is also pretty cool. My friend bought a tilt the same day that I did and recently swapped out for an IPhone. He likes it way better, but he was having all sorts of trouble with his tilt. I have been really lucky and have had zero problems. I have installed a bunch of 3rd party apps. I have UL, Mobile shell3, Tom Tom and a few others.
I was an 8525 and then a Tilt owner before I bought my first iPhone, and now, after all these months of modding and "playing" with the iPhone, I have to say it's the best device out. The Tilt is bulky, slow, and WM is horrible compared to the iPhone's OS. The ONLY thing my iPhone lacks is a QWERTY slide-out keyboard which I miss, but after using the built-in keyboard the speed to type is now the same. Size is another factor for me. It's a lot thinner but incorporates a larger screen for viewing as opposed to the thicker brick-like Tilt and smaller screen. With the release of Slingplayer for the iPhone the other day it makes this phone flat-out amazing. I've owned both, was a huge Tilt fan for a long time, but after having both I could NEVER go back to a Tilt. It's just sub-par IMHO.
These arguements over "which is better" only boil down to personal choice, so neither side is "right", but I only appreciate opinions from people that have owned both phones since those of you that have only had one or the other are baised. If you're a Tilt owner I challenge you to own an iPhone and see if you'll ever....EVER...go back to a giant brick like that again. It doesn't have anything a jailbroken iPhone doesn't, and lacks a better OS along with the ability to have apps like the Level tool etc.
I think for someone that just want to have a cool gaget the iphone is the best due it being "hip".
Now for doing something serious the 8925 is one of the best devices to date. I use my 8925 for aero navigation, half the time I have the device on the phone radio is off. When I'm not flying I use a Motorola F3.
I dont get the appeal of the "look at my new phone", or "check out this app", though I hear the iphone is great for looking a gay porn I think the app for that is called iGay, it is bundled with iPrius and iSnob.

Same thing my friend says. Like I said, he bought his tilt the same day that I bought mine and recently got the IPhone. He swears by it now. I'm still not sure I'm convinced. Another thing the IPhone has going for it is Cisco having the rights to produce apps for it. My friend has the Cisco VPN client and VPN's to work and his home lab. That was pretty amazing. It was all very fast as well.
Hey! Read the Announcement at the Top of the Kaiser Section. The one Written By Me.
This is against the guidelines set forth in that annoucement and therefore, this thread is closed.
I have waited faithfully for a long time for Android, but now I have fallen in love with Diamond2...
I am a student, and will mostly need the phone for entertainment purposes. For my use, (mostly internet, skype, taking the occational picture, watching .avi's, mp3, old school games like nes or scummvm), which one would you pick? It's important for me the the phone is fast and responsive, and that it can edit .doc files (word, openoffice, something like that). I also would love for it to have a file-organizer (something like norton commander would have been excellent), ability to run and install files from the phone directly, and the ability to download with it (torrents, etc) and if possible, stream online content. So basically a mini-computer. Which phone do you think is best for me? I do not care about calender, email (e.i outlook) integration, anything that has to do with planing and\or actual work, in other words
Also:
Do you belive android will get ported to the diamond 2 in the forseeable future? Will the diamond 2 be released in the US, and if it's not, do you think there will be significant developments (like the android port) for the phone anyway?
So to sum up, Should I just go for the Diamond 2 or wait a month or two for the Magic (thats the earliest it will be released here in norway)?
I am as pro open-source as you can get (typing this from ubuntu Jaunty right now, and got rid of windows 2 years ago on my home computer, without regret (but I am not a gamer ;-) ), but I would still get the diamond 2 (as a matter of fact, I have one).
Better screen (although resistive, but it means that you can use the stylus (no-no on capacitive) AND finger (although slightly less effectiveley than on a capacitive screen), resolution is insane on the TD2. Hardware-wise they are very close, but I like the TD2 style much better (why are all android phones so ugly??? or is it just me? ).
TD2 have better camera and also front-facing secondary one (neither are important for me - as more MegaµPixel is not so important anyway, I am sure 3.2 MP of the Magic is enough given the optics, and video call is too expensive), but Magic have larger battery (very important) and digital compas (not a bad idea ;-) ), and more physical inputs (trackballs, more buttons) that the TD2 is unfortunately lacking.
On the OS side, WindowsMobile, while ugly and dated, just works, have a ton of customization, hacks and software available, and WinMo 6.5 is coming and may be an improvement on the prettyness side.As Android should be ported to the TD2 anyway, TD2 gives you more software choices...and it is available now and not too expensive.
That, and the high-resolution screen, were the deciding factors for me...
How many hours of video(divx) can you get? And how about audio(mp3)?
This is a hard one. Many will be biased here to the TD2 which I am as well.
-It looks way nicer (hotter,Better, Cooler, Bomber, ect...)
-OMG It's HOT
-Ummm doesn't look like a soap bar
-In the future we should be able to run Android on it like the HD and Dimaond and CDMA Touch.
-So yeah go with the TD2
Hi there. Ill be honest i was in exactly the same boat as you. I waited for this a few months and predicted the magic and T2 Diamond would come out at eh same time. I owned a HTC touch since then. I was very curious to try android but the closer i came getting away from winMo the more i realised that i am very familiar with it.
As you can guess i went with the T2 diamond for 3 weeks now. Imported from CLove.co.uk I am very very happy with the diamond 2. The responsiveness of the phone is definately noticable. I might try android probably in 2010 when the android market place is more matured, but for the mean time im sticking to windows mobile.
Asking that question in a Diamond2 thread. You will get biased answers.
I Agree like the rest...HTC Diamond2 !!!
Look No More, it's HTC Touch Diamond2 !!!
Did you guys check the HTC site lately?
They have released the specs of HTC Touch HD2
http://www.htc.com/www/product/hd2/specification.html
which seem pretty impressive...
I for one, will make the change to Snapdragon (MUAHAHAHA)...what about you guys?
What's your take on this?
Cheers
Looks really good. The problem may be wm6.5. Hopefully it is going to come with a guaranted upgrade to wm7.
X3 of course has a chance against it imo. Android is improving consequently and the phone will be build directly by SE (or not?). Specs are fantastic.
Well, they still have a chance for one simple reason - the HD2 doesn't have a HW keyboard. That aside the HD2 owns them in every aspect.
I'm going for the first WM6.5 based HTC phone which has both keyboard and Snapdragon - it'll be a blast!
its the hw keyboard that will help the x2 to sale, also it looks a lot better than the current snapdragon devices (htc hd2 and toshiba tg01)
i am keeping ma X1 till new device pup up with:
hw keyboard+snapdragon or tegra+4 way direction pad(why the hell there are taking out 4 way directonpad from new devices?)+5 mpx or more and at least 1500 mAh battery.
i will pass leo too
All that processing power and specs mean nothing without a d-pad and a hw keyboard. If they add those to the Leo, it would be the best device in history, if not, just another phone with good specs, but bad design.
People need good control over their devices in order to do a good job at anything. Hw keyboard and a d-pad are a must.

That was the reason why X1 was my choice,
now X2 looks like the only one retaining all those necessary things.
So in the end I rather forget Snapdragon and have usable device,
than all-touch screen beast which would drive me crazy.
I really say - onscreen keyboard is my "hate".
Don't imagine any serious writing with it.

I agree, I'm ready to give up my Omnia and get a phone w/ a real sliding KB. Unfortunately, there aren't many that are ATT 3G! I've even thought of the Nokia N97!!! shudder...
Yes, HD2 owns over x2, x3 and even x4 and x5. why??? XDA Support, that's why.
but not having a hardware keyboard is indeed a miss, since i got used to the kb of tp2 wich feels so much better and so is making typing fun again..... but....
I'll wait for tp3, wich hopefully comes with same specs as HD2, maybe with only 4"screen, whatever.
I doubt that wm7 will be out untill q4 next year
judging how many of the devices from last year got
wm6.5 updates I would not hold my breath for a wm7 update
for any wm6.5 device you buy now

I agree with the last two paragraphs, but what's the point of buying the same device again? X2 has no improvements + it is ... ugly!
Your second paragraph is spot on. I already have a usable device - X1. i won't upgrade until a similar product with better and up-to-date hardware comes out. X2 is not that product IMHO, so I'll wait for Leo Pro or TP3 lolz.
Indeed....the X1 was my choice over the HD because it had a keyboard and over TP2 because it looked better in my opinion.
On the other hand I sorta have stopped typing much on my X1 (Maybe because of X1's poor quality keyboard. I remember typing WAY faster on my old P1i) and this is why I'd be tempted to go towards the HD2. I can just imagine watching normal xvids with no skips on that beautiful 4.3" screen...
unfortunately.. X1 was my reason why i left for touch hd.
my h/w keyboard had double tapping... no one at service centre cares .. etc etc etc..
can someone give me a summary what the X2 is all about?

i too agree. no point in upgrading because its not really an upgrade other than having a slightly bigger screen

Sure, everyones choice.
I will be really happy with even better keyb, much better camera,
WM 6.5 and improved UI/Panels.
These things are not minor for me....
And that also matters - I find X2 better looking than X1.....
Finally still nothing on market what would really convince me!

its only worth getting the x2 if i can get it as a free replacement as its got the same or better hardware so there is no lose in getting a x2.
but u are right in the sense that its not worth buying if u own a x1.
It's screen so big..
How to use without d-pad huh? Many games need it!

i have noticed that the newer games from spb and astraware are more touchscreen friendly games (iphone like games) and i think most phone companies see that as the future and dont think many of the newer games will be made with stylus or dpad in mind.
but it does not help with games already out that need the dpad.

I have noticed that as well and it is pathetic. Everyone knows that mobile gaming without a d-pad is impossible and annoying at best. You either need to tilt you head along with the phone or have half the screen obscured by controls and your fingers.
Let's hope they will come to their senses...
I will never buy a phone without a hw keyboard or wiothout a d-pad...

Personal opinion. I have both on the X1 and use neither.
For the minority who need a keyboard then sure, the X2 might do alright particularly for business users. but would business users, like me, need a d-pad? Especially for gaming? I doubt it.
