Hello World! - Off-topic

I just bought one O2 xDA Mini S on ebay, well known HTCs piece of hardware, which is not (but should be) SIM and CID unlocked, ROM upgraded, etc.
Before this Wizard I was proud owner of one SIEMENS SX1, and member of community www.oslik.ru I am already introduced in flashing and patching procedures, and i found some connections between this two devices. It was very powerful device, also TI OMAP procestr on ARM, EXT_ROM sounds like SIEMENS ROLF, ROM looks like Z core drive, etc.
After I found this great community, I just have to say THANK YOU good people, because I'm not able to made any donations, even if I wish to do that (my Country is not welcome at payment processors like PayPal, long story...). I do not know what type my Wizard will be (G3 or G4), it didn't arrived yet, but I am using this time to study all Your manuals, flashing howto's, and everything seems to be in order, "loud and clear". All Authors, thank You for the time You have spend, I am sure that it wasn't easy to wrote.

I just sold my Wizard after one year of use and bought Artemis from ebay. As previous owner of mini s I am sure youre gonna love it especially with such support from mods on this forum.
This forum is great resource for updating and resolving problems. After a year of monitoring this forum I decide to register. Better now than never.
Thanks to all for support and CyberianIce welcome to the club.

Welcome aboard guys

[REQ] Windows Mobile 5 on XDA IIi

Hi, Does anyone know if there is an update to XDA IIi to Windows Mobile 5.0.
I know there is one for the Himalaya version of XDA.
I have spoken to 02 and they say that it is highly unlikely and would be releasing the XDA II Exec with WM2005. Any info would be gratefully received.
Mod edit: Please be sure to mark requests with [REQ]
Double post deleted.
And there is currently no WM 5 for that device.
Can't the admins just delete these threads and/or ban the thread starters? I mean how many times has this thread been posted, 200, 300?
The thing is that that new people arrives every day.
New people don't know what we know, new people don't/can't consume all the content of this site that fast.
Banning new people won't do xda-dev any good.
Deleting the posts will only give us even more of these post :!:
So the best thing for those that feel irritated by it, just overlook them and move on
Thread moved from mod. upgrade, unlock to Alpine
WM2005
Apologies to the anybody who is not happy with my post.
Don't worry about them!!!If you don't know, you have the right to ask!!!However, before that you should read some thread about the topic you want to know!!!
Cheers mate
I have been watching posts for two months, and still have not been able to understand "yes", "no" or "maybe soon...."
People talk Blueangel, da da da...
I want clear talk about XDA IIi or Alpine. Don't be jumping on people to review old threads when it is hard enough knowing which model people are actually referring to...
I too am interested in reading if anyone has recently tried a 2005 mod on XDA IIi (Alpine), and what problems they may have encountered.
blueclue7, the WM2005 ROM is not for the Alpine, it is for the Himalaya.
The hardware is totally different between the two devices, it will not work.
There is no WM2005 build for the Alpine yet, maybe never, we don't know yet.
The Alpine has WM2003se, and so far, that is all there is.
WM2003 exists for the Alpine in 2 main versions so far, both have bugs. Most of these bugs would probably be solved by WM2005, but guess what, there isn't a WM2005 build yet.
Oh, by the way, WM2005 for the Himilaya won't work on the Alpine, just as it won't work on the Blue Angel, or the Magician, or any other PPC other than the Himalaya.
hi guys u have just bought an xda2i off ebay. I am regretting it before it has arrived due to the lushness of wm2005 and you guys saying it wont be coming to xda2i. How come its coming to the older xda2 arghhh. I may have to make them program an update at gunpoint.
if you want i can trade you my MDAII? heheh
WM2005 on XDA IIi
It will be interesting when they release the Universal with WM2005, as it is technically the XDAIIi is similar. So hopefully it will be just a matter of time before someone reverse engineers the Universal Rom for XDAIIi.
Unless of course the 02/I-Mate/Qtek etc do the sensible thing and release an offical upgrade.
I don't see how Microsoft and PDA makers can whine about priacy, when people have spent good money for a new release PDA, only to be told it has the old software and even though it is capable of accepting the WM2005 upgrade....easily, we won't do it cause we don't think our customers are that important, welcome to the money grabbing world of Microsoft and many others.
I hope Microsoft and PDA people read this and learn!!!!

Hello, there is some good news from our friend at blue angel forum, some one from that forum asked his frien if there's any update WM5 for Blue Angel, and his friend (who is HTC rep) said "YES!!!"
I read that post three times, ( i wondering if my english is really bad or there will be update for HTC Blue Angle ) Here's the link :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?p=147760#147760
and for me that is "good" new ( May be a bit, but better than nothing), there is a hope they also make up date for HTC Alpine because it's younger :? . Yah... just hope....
or some one will give the WM5 Himalaya cooker a new HTC Alpine????
I'm sure he'll make that (WM5) work on HTC Alpine...
should we start a petition?
why not ?
WM5
hey... good idea...
Great News Again
Hei XDA IIi lovers, i got some ( I think good news ), i post some email to O2 asia asking if they will release WM5 for IIi and their answer :
"There are no firm plans as yet to offer this particular upgrade to customers of existing Xda devices"
But.... don't stop there ......., after that they wrote :
"but we are studying market demand for this platform, and we will certainly consider offering it in the future if there are sufficient requests for it from our customers"
Do you all get it???
they just need to know if there's sufficient request...
I guest i've start my petition.... How about we all start to petition right now....
hehe i wont hold my breath but i might aswell put my name down for the petition.

Gimmie WM2005 NOW !!!
---------------------
Okay, lets finish this thread now, Here are the FACTS !!
WM2005 IS NOT RELEASED YET
The Himalaya build is a internal release by microsoft which was leaked to the world and then modified by our good friends buzz Lightyear and co. This build was specially written for microsoft employees on the wm2005 program as the majority of them have himalaya devices.
This new OS will be released officially on the next generation of XDA devices which will probably incorparate 3G technology as well.
So NO The current WM2005 builds that are doing the rounds WILL NEVER be available for other platforms as the hard ware is completely different from platform to platform.
All you can hope for is that
a) It is officially released for your device then modified like Wm2003SE for Himalaya.
b) Some one will swap you there XDA II device.
c) Get a copy of Wisbar Advance and skin it to look like Magento (This actually looks more polished than the actual WM2005 in my opinion.
I personally have a M1000, Orange version of the XDA II which i upgraded to WM2003SE after 3 days of it arriving, then upgraded to WM2005 1.60b which i am now running..... it's the best phone/thing i've ever had.....plus i got it cheap thanks to a price mistake on Orange's website

So...why can you unlock other HTC phones for free

But you always have to pay to unlock a Treo?? I mean, it's made by HTC and has WM Pro...right? So why can't someone figure out how to unlock it like you can with the Wizard, 8525, etc??
????
Man, you need help!
Could you express yourself a little better?
How so? I think it's rather straight forward. I've yet to find a free unlock method for the Treo 750, whereas with other HTC phones (the MDA specifically) there is a free unlock method. Why is that?
Was that expressed better?
How about this..
Free unlocky Treo 750 no worky. Free unlocky other phone worky. Gabba gabba diff dorf.
Excellent

Excellent answer dma1965! lol
Perhaps someone with a reading comprehension higher than 5th grader can explain. Is it a lack of development interest, or something that's hardware/software related? Since there are companies that will charge to unlock the 750, it's evidently doable, so why has no one bothered to hack a free unlock. Or perhaps 750 users aren't as resourceful as Wizard/Hermes users?
I blame global warming. It seems to be the root of many other problems worldwide, so why not? Thoughts?
Once again, fantastic!

Hi Charles -
I'm assuming you mean SIM unlocking...It has to do with the smaller installed based of Treos compared to other HTC devices.
The primary contributors to homebrew unlockers and ROM cooking have devices other than the Treo, and it's rare for them to take the time to dev for devices they don't own.
That said, if there's a large enough group of folks who need a solution, developers with the know-how can be engaged, and many of them will throw some time at it. There's a good chance a modified bootloader for the 750 will be released soon (which will allow for cooked ROMs), however SIM unlocking isn't part of the endeavor.
Hope that answers your question. If not, post up in here. Generally it's a very friendly and generous forum.
PS. for reference, the number of folks here on xda-dev who can dig into ARM assembly deep enough to create a SIM unlocker can be counted on one hand, and they tend to own HTC devices. =)
Thank you!
I figured as much, but wanted to confirm that was the reason. I've had a 650 for 2 years now, so given my interaction with other users, I figured someone would have cooked something up by now. I thought the consumer base was big enough to merit it. Oh well.
Again, thanks for actually taking the time to reply instead of being a douchewank.

Windows Mobile 7

Hi all,
I hope you all had a great Xmas.
This is just a follow on from my preious post, in which I was asking for advice on whether I should get a Tytn II (thanks to all that replied to that post, by the way). I think I have made up my mind and will probably get a T-Mobile branded Vario III here in the UK.
My question is regarding the upcoming Windows Mobile 7 operating system...
How soon is this likely to be released? I heard on a mobile tech podcast that it could be as early as Q1 2008, with handsets being released with Win Mob 7.
How would this affect a purchase of the Vario III now? Would Win Mob 7 be a possible upgrade for the Tytn 2 / Vario III? I realise that any OS upgrade would be an operator decision, so how likely would T-Mobile UK release an upgrade for the Vario III? If not, would I be able to easily get hold of a Win Mob 7 ROM from these forums when the time comes? What about the most recent Win Mob 6.1 upgrade?
Apologies for all the questions, but it has thrown a small stone in the works regarding my purchase of the Vario III.
Any advice will be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Munkee
I'm not an expert, and do not have any links to (relevant) device producers or Microsoft.
But my understanding is that Q1 2008 will see the release of WinMo 6.1 Pro (The one out now is for non-touchscreen devices only). WinMo 7.0 is being worked on intensively, however from what I have read it won't be out till end 2008/early 2009.
Apparently WinMo 7.0 will be somewhat of a revolution though.
My advice to you: if you like the Kaiser, get it. 2 years ago, I held my breath because of the Samsung F700 (a friend working at Samsung had leaked the info)...I ended up waiting till this October, when I thought "screw it". Got the Kaiser instead (was on the Universal till then), and never looked back (the F700 was released in Nov, with most of the promised features omitted).
Nice little story, eh?! You get the point.

Horrible post... I've just spent most of my Christmas holiday flashing my TyTN, re-flashing the flash, tweaking the re-flashed custom home cooked Dutty/Sleuth/Alex/Q/Schaps - and I've just got my phone how I like it ..... for today...
..... and then someone comes along and wiggles WM7 in front of my USB port.
Oh well, my Kaiser goes the same way as my Hermes, Wizard etc... If only I could stop flashing for a while I'd probably have time to sell the old phones

Rule Number 1 of Technology Buying:
Buy now unless there is an impending update(like next week or month).
I wouldn't worry about WM7 too much but about WM 6.1 which we'll probably all get an update for from our respective carriers(for people like me who run a carrier-based ROM like Alex's) So, just buy it and tinker away!
beret9987 you just snatched the words out of my mouth. I absolutely share your views. I think all existing WM6 devices will be upgradeable to 6.1 which will see the light of the day in Q1 of 2008 while WM7 is too far away to influence our present buying decisions."
Regards
I think its no point waiting for WM7. You know about Microsoft, especially their Vista release on time. Though if they're gonna release WM7 anytime sooner or later, our kings at the xda will bring it to existing devices Lol.. So just go ahead for a good WM6 device. Kaiser is good and powerful and at the same time a little huge and heavy. I love the Artemis for the design and weight.
I wrote an article on how to buy the best windows mobile device. Not an expert over there but your suggestions welcome!

Carty..

Glad to hear, great decision as the Kaiser is a great phone (especially if you get T-Mobiles web n walk unlimited data package...they sell it in the UK for 7.50pounds, don't know how much it is in the States though.)
And once you've flashed it with one of the wonderful ROMs here, you and your Kaiser will be flying like Vince Carter...
Enjoy,
H.
well ... my opinion might look a bit sarcastic, but since my old XDA II was re-born with WM6 (thx to ToFlock and other gurus here) I took a decision to wait at least for 6 months before buying a new rom-based device ... my criteria is to get a new device ONLY if it contains a new H/W that I might need ... I moved from XDA to XDA II for the camera and BT ... then moved to Universal for the VGA and WIFI .. then moved to Kaiser for the larger ram and GPS ... WM7 or else won't be the base for my decision of a new device.
Yeah.. I'd say Get kaiser now instead of waiting for WM7.
By the time WM7 device is out, you'll eventually hear through some rumours and leaked images of next-best-n-cool device(WM 8? or new codename)
There is no end to this feeling
So get it now and start Enjoy !!

Yup, i'm in the UK and am specifically looking at this device on T-Mobile mainly because of the £7.50 Web'N'Walk data plan. As for flashing the Vario III with one of the ROMs found here, how would this affect my contract with T-Mobile? If I do indeed flash the Vario with one of the ROMs, would I just need to hope that I don't ever need to take the handset back to T-Mobile if I ever have problems with it? ;o)
Thanks,
Munkee
P.S. I really need to change my Vince Carter sig.....glad he's not with the Raptors anymore! ;o)

Post your Testimonials here.

Sorry Mods and Admins, if i m postin' this in a wrong place.
Hi y'all developers, while typin' my last post, i realized that i have 100+ posts, and i have become a senior member now. So felt like makin' a thread for testimonials.
I came across xda-developers, last year. I wuz usin' Blue Angel that time, i wuz attemptin' to update my ROM, with the latest one, on the vendor's website. Somethin' went wrong, and my phone got stuck at a grey screen with USB written on it. I tried everything, that a normal user would do. Tried soft-reset, hard-reset, removed battery, nothin' worked. I thought, that would be the end of it, b'cuz warranty wasn't valid as this phone was officialy not available here, that time.
Then i searched web, and got results in this website, followed wiki, learnt about BootLoader mode, killed the required processes in the task manager & wuz able to do the update succesfully. Then there wuz no end to it, flashed so many ROMs, enjoyed WM6 on a phone runnin' WM3. Never imagined that Had this community not been there, my phone would have been nothin' more than a brick.
Here, we have so many personalized applications to share, customized ROMs removing the shortcomings of original ones, shipped with the device. Moreover, we have 'Offline' to discuss about different other topics, to share jokes, incidents and to get suggestions and reviews on the new things, in the market.
Thanks to all the Developers, Moderators & the Administrators(of course), for this lovely community.
People who feel, if they got any help from this forum, plz post your testimonials here.
UNITED WE STAND, Cheers..
i was totally into nokias and never thought of switching brands.
just about when pocket pcs used to be so bulky- i never thought i needed such a device although it offered much more than nokias.
then came our good ol' magician. when i was on a trip to Dubai i saw this beautiful ppc which was smaller but much higher in specs as compared to the xda IIs
i immediately got it then and there (O2 xda mini).
then one day (when i didn't know about this site) i flashed a wrong rom and my mini showed just USB v1.1. i started searching the www and finally reached this site. i not only got a rom but also wonderful apps which have really enhanced my ppc experience.
but i now feel so unlucky cos' i got a magician. we can not flash wm5 or 6 therefore
no touchflo...no many good things! (if anybody has "good things" pls tell me)
i've helped a number of noobs here who always got a "regional" error when reflashing (of course ...the developers and senior members feel sick repeating it time and again to the new ppl)
i am thinking of getting a new device now but all devices of my choice have a major disadvantage which i would like to list.(point me out if i am wrong):-
1. HTC Touch (slow processor, no dedicated 2.5mm audio jack..and the supplied earphones suck!)
2. HTC TyTN II (HTC is so very reluctant in providing the display drivers..this device is rendered way slower than a magician)
3. HTC Touch Cruise (same case as with tytn II, feels much bigger than touch)
and then windows mobile 7 is on its way and i've come across some screenshots too.
and i seriously doubt the existing devices will be able to be upgraded to wm7. its got some features like dual touch sensitivity which contribute to this doubt.correct me if i am wrong pls. (but very frankly....i have full faith in the developers here who have insanely sharp minds)
and lastly - i have not yet donated any amount till date but i am going to begin soon as i have full plans to get a paypal acount. i understand that the developers here have to sacrifice their hell lot of time to write awesome codes and then to improve them, remove flaws and make them compatible for as many devices as possible.
and then this is a nice thread (thanks to rohit!) ...pls share your experiences -it takes only a minute or two (but it took me more than 15 minites---i am a bit SLOW!!)
thanks a lot
PEACE!!
i got help with my htc wizard. i was getting tired with the rom it came with so i started to look for hacks or mods and i found this site even dough that i had come here a year before looking for info on a ipaq and left the site because had no info on the ipaq. but when i got the wizard this site has helped me with everything
Thanks

How do cooked roms differ?

Ho,
I am reading and getting more intrigued re flashing my TyTnII with a suitable ROM, after my holidy in July of couse as I really need it for that.
But can someone explain how a cooked ROM is able to out perform a stock one?
I dont get it? Take GPS for example. I read that it is the radio driver tha deals with this?
So how come a huge organisation like HTC puts a radio on the device and then someone off their own back is able to do something with the driver to make it more effiecient?
Or am I totally discombobulated and talking gaa gaa?

Well for one the software on Cooked ROMs is different. All the "Bloatware" is removed and some useful applications are cooked in.
As for radios there are many variaties (some ported from other devices) that perform better on different networks and different locations.
The radios arn't made by chefs, there just taken from different ROM's. I.e. some from the newest ATT Tilt, some from the Vodafone 6.1 ROM etc. etc.

HTC is a company with primary objective: making money
if you were HTC's owner, and assuming you want more and more money, would you release a product that is so perfect that nobody will never consider buying your next updated newer products? on the other hand, to attract customers to your current product you need to have amazing specifications listed in your marketing brochures (i.e. hardware features) which unfortunately can ONLY work with better "ingridients" of ROM (did somebody mention cooked ROMs ?)
ps: btw how old are you?

Further to this, HTC "forgot" the drivers for the hardware graphics acceleration for the MSM chipset. There not all that good.
Dave (BTW if you want my age you'll have to find it )
couple things you can do. You can flash a radio and you can flash a cooked rom. Different radios can give you different reception, and even faster GPS lock. You will have to experiment on which one works best, as long as the radio is compatible with the rom. A cooked rom has a lot of programs stripped out from OEM which makes the rom a lot faster than the OEM.
Excellent chaps, I am more inclined to have a go!
Mmm how old am I?
Well let's see beleive it or not I am a programmer for a large organisation but know jack about all this stuff in the same way I know jack about web creation or networks. But I do know about programming database applications and in my time have written a few nice graphics programs.
Now here's the thing....can you guess my age?
Have worked here for 25 years and worked my way up the ranks, been married for 22 years and have a 21 year old son.......
BTW why do you want to know how old I am?

How do cooked roms differ?
Well, to be honest, it's more about "usability / feel / look " than any other thing.
Original/Official roms are generally having an appalling feel and look. For example, take my network provider (Orange in UK). I had read a lot about TyTN_II (aka Tilt/Kaiser...etc.) before getting my own from Orange. The moment I unpacked the device and turned it on , I was completely disappointed. Orange engineers spend a lot of time "customizing" (i.e. ruining) the feel and look of the device so that it looks more Orange-ish.
Their fossil tech people bag their regular salary every month and are light years behind the current time. They have no desire/motivation to be innovative (that's why they do not realse a software update even every two years).
I received my SPVM3100 (aka TyTN) from Orange almost 3 years ago. Two and a half years later, when I received TyTN_II , I was shocked to see that they had loaded exactly the same bloatware and disgusting theme they had used on older HTC devices years ago.
xda rom developers are up-to-date; they are brilliant individuals who develop software out of their personal passion and love of technology. They know what is exactly going on in PDA community at this very moment. They listen to users' experiences in real life every day and they strive to make things look better, more practical and faster.
With an original/official rom you're stuck with what the HTC (or Orange, AT&T, Vodafone ...) developers put in your device ages ago. With cooked roms (depending on your actual use of the device) you have a variety of options to choose from.
And most important of all, you'll join the forum, get addicted to it, learn loads of new tweaks and work-arounds, and will see surprising new customized software almost every week.
Believe me, stay tuned in here and soon you'll notice that not only you're holding a completely different device in your hand, but also YOU will be a completely new user of the device ; a user more in command of the HTC you're carrying around
Welcome

I bought my TyTnII for £434 unlocked.
It has an Ornage sim card plus all the stuff I have loaed myself:
SBP Pocket Plus, Weather, Time etc and loads of German learning programs, speech and the like.
When I first came to this site I was put off as I did not fully grasp what it was all about, but that's me all over....should read the manual first
I really like the idea of flashing and getting rid of the bloatware as you call it and see how my device works afterwards.
But as I paid £434 for it if I brick it my wife will use said brick to remove my ability to father any heirs!!!!!

Well, if you do have an issue, "Brick", there are a few people around that can revive you. If ever in need search around, there's a guy that has revived a plethora of dead kaisers, but I can't remember his name at the moment.
Anyway, as this really is not development related, I'm gonna move it to the general section.
Welcome to XDA.
