I've been putting up with this since I got my Diamond, but now enough is enough
Has anyone experience Activesync disconnecting there device after a random period of time?
The device connecs and syncs - no problems - but after what might be 5mins, or 35mins (randomly does this...), it just disconnects!!
Appears to have nothing to do with charging (could be only partially charged or fully) or actual syncing process. Not a real issue as it still syncs initially and even when disconnects it still charges up from the USB but...this appears to be a flaw with the s/w of diamond or WM6.1 (to me...)
If this is an issue perhaps someone from HTC might read this and note same!
Happens to me too. Not all the time, not often... exactly random, as you said. Quite annoying
I'm sure there can't be just two of us! This happens to me for nearly every connection, the difference is sometimes its in 5min, sometimes 5hrs
BTW, this happens with both my work and home PC......
Surely there are others with this issue???
now i cannot even connect but when i can never it will never doconect except when you turn the screen off
Hi,
I have the same disconnect problem, varies every time.
Looks like I'm not alone... Every 5 mins I need to turn off and on my screen t to reconnect, no matter at home or at office.... you guys are right... ANNOYING
Not sure if this might work but in Device manager > USB Hub properties > untick Allow computer to turn off this device to save power.

Thanks will try this {USB Root Hub} as it was actually clicked on....let you know how it goes!!
I haven't got any problem with Active Sync, both with Exchange server and with the desktop Outlook. Are you syncing with XP or Vista? I found Vista is rock solid when it comes to ActiveSync using their Mobile Device Center.

sounds like the device is turning off (not just the screen off)...this will of course disconnect ASync
OK, USB power off is not the issue here as with power manegement off it still disconnects.....
....anyone familiar with asynckiller? Built into SwiftB ROMs and is always running...what does this optimise? Could it be the culprit
Asynckiller the culprit...testing now...
could be getting closer now....I reckon its this Asynckiller built into the ROM
see here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=386948
Have shut it down with task manager and see if the sync holds....stay tuned
hey guys i've had the same problem too. the answer to your question is simple: if the screen turns off, the device goes to sleep, the activesync connection is terminated. simple as that. in most cases however, my diamond never goes to sleep mode when in activesync... so if yours does, that's a newer problem
Hi,
I have the same problem with activesync by usb. This is very annoying especially if you have to transfer large files, like maps with TomTom-Home.
It is not the standby-mode which causes the problem. Even without going into standby the connection get loss.
My solution for the problem is to use bluetooth for active sync. I never get disconnected even I stay connected for hours!
I assume it must have to do something with the usb-controller. When I connect my device as mass-storage with my linux computer and transfer much/large files, I can see a lag in transfer after some time. The transfer stops for some seconds and then it goes on again.
Maybe this is the reason why activesync lose the connection
Have ruled out asynckiller....this is not the issue. Brief correspondance with SwiftB and he thinks this issue has been around as long as WM6.1 as been i.e. MS Activsync issue (another one!!) oh so frustrating
I was having this same issue when using a generic cradle I sent off for to sit my HTC Touch Diamond in. I've gone back to the cable that comes in the box with it and suddenly no more disconnections! Are you all using cradles too?
Yep. Have the same problem. Using Vista and 6.1. It wasn't a problem with XP and WM 5, but has appeared with 6.1.
I don't think it is Vista, as it also happens on another machine with XP and 6.1. Also not to do with the power saving, screen sleep or 'phone sleep. I disabled these in turn and the 'phone still disconnects (it does seem to be the 'phone, not the PC - both Vista and XP work fine with two other WM5 devices, although Microsoft is as confusing as ever by saying that AS is no longer required with Vista, whilst selling WM that always requires AS, thus ensuring that AS on the 'phone has to sync with Mobile Connection Centre).
It has got better and worse during the 8 weeks I've had the 'phone - not clear whether this is ROM or application related, as I'm changing so many things at once. Clean ROM install seems to help, but then the problem reappears when all apps are back on the 'phone. Maybe it's not getting a necessary data connection signal from the PC? I'm running it from a Dell M1330 USB2 port.

Hi all,
Has anyone had/seen this problem? Whenever I connect my TYTN II (Vodafone v1615) to my laptop (Sony VGN-BX197XP) runnig XP sp2 the laptop's WIFI connection drops. It then keeps dropping out and coming back even AFTER I've disconnected the device - I have to reboot to get it sensible again.
As you can imagine, this is a little inconvenient!
Can anyone help?

Sounds like the same symptoms that some people were getting with Activesync 4.5 on some machines a year ago - I thought it had been solved by now - never bit me, but my wife had terrible problems with a Vario 1 and her Sony Vaio. Have a look under "Settings->Connections->USB" - is there a check box somewhere around there to turn off "advanced" functionality? If so, do it and see if that fixes it. Microsoft added the option of a sort of IP tunnel through Activesync which really seemed to screw some WiFi chip sets,,,
Martin
Unfortunately I can't see any similar function but your pointer towards active sync seems to be right. When I uninstalled Active Sync and plugged the device in, it was fine. I installed it and as soon as it synced, the wireless dropped out. Most infuriating!
It's not any odd software I've installed either as, due to another issue, I had to hard-reset it and watch it reset itself to defaults and I was only connecting it so that I could drop the backup software on so that I could restore my backup... The device was effectively quite virginal at the time.
I recall this being an issue with the wireless card drivers rather than AS. Are you up to date on those?

It's nothing that you did - it was a serious compatibility problem between ActiveSync 4.5 and some PC WiFi chip sets - including those used in many Vaios. I checked on my Vario III after my original posting and the setting is still there under "Settings->Connections->USB to PC" and its called "Enable advanced network functionality". If you turn that off, I think it may solve your problem. I'm not sure exactly what functionality you will loose, but basic synchronisation will still work...

I cannot get ActiveSync to detect my phone.
I get the XP message "USB Device Not Recognized" when I plug in the phone.
I have checked my USB drivers. They are more up to date (2004) than the ones listed on the Microsoft support page listed in the ActiveSync readme.doc
I am running ActiveSync 4.5 on a Windows XP laptop
Windows Mobile 6 CE OS 5.2.1620 (Build 18125.0.4.2)
on an Orange Tytn II (ok, I will flash the rom once I have a working ActiveSync!)
I have tried switching off the firewall on the laptop - no luck.
Changing the in "Enable advanced network functionality" through the 'USB to PC' connections makes no difference.
In the Get Connected Window USB is listed as having status "USB is available" after clicking Next on Checking COM ports (it takes a while).
I have uninstalled and reinstalled ActiveSync 4.5 (obtained from both the CD and the Microsoft web site).
I have done the usual cycle of switching everything off and rebooting (several times).
I have tried all four of the USB ports on my ASUS A6000.
New suggestions for things to try most welcome.
I did have the same problem myself when I first got mine. I also tried turning firewalls off etc. The only method that seemed to regularly work was to reset the kaiser and ultimately a hard reset
i had a similar problem and i found it was because i still had the nokia phone sync software on my pc too .. removing it sorted the problem
Soft reset the device, reboot the pc.
If USB syncing doesnt work, try bluetooth.
Works for approx 30 secs after reboot
I think I have a faulty phone.
ActiveSync works for about 30 seconds after a reboot, as does gps tracking, and then the connection is lost (and gps fixes on the last tracked location). I have tried soft/hard resets, all to no avail.
Unfortunately I bought the phone in London and I will have to wait until I am next in London to take it back to the Orange shop for a replacement :-(
I am having the same issue but I cant get activesync to work at all
I could recognise the kaiser on one PC but not on another, messed around and go it working then it stoped , all along it was mt Firewall, disabled the fire wall never had any more problems with activesync. that was my issue might be something for you to look into

I think your phone is ok. ActiveSync always gives all kind of problems.
I sync my kaiser on my desktop, my laptop and at work. For some reason, my desktop had exactly the same problem than yours. I tried everything!
Finally I found something that made it work much better. Go to Settings->Connections->USB to PC and uncheck the option 'Enable advanced network functionality'
After that, I still get some random disconnects, but only happens like every 3 or 4 days.
Hope it helps.
I had this same problem (device not being recognised) but fixed it by connecting the USB directly to the PC not via a USB hub. This makes me think that the TyTN II requires the maximum current from its USB connector to work; a hub reduces the available power; some PC connections may not have enough and this could account for the problems some users are experiencing perhaps??

Have you fixed the problem yet? I'm having the same problem and tried everything suggested here.
I tried it on 2 computers with Vista. First it worked, but since my laptop with XP isn't reacting on my Kaiser anymore, Vista can't find the Kaiser too. Only a friend of mine, who has a Trinity, can use activesync. Is flashing a good fix?
Found solution to my problem
I have finally found a solution that works for me (having tried everything that everybody has suggested, plus more).
I found that if you have a password enabled (ie, something that has to be typed when the phone is first switched on; available via Settings -> Personal -> Lock) and a firewall running, then an ActiveSync connection fails for no obvious reason.
Disable the firewall and your phone will prompt you for the password after which ActiveSync works.
Disable the password and there is no prompt with/without firewall and ActiveSync works.
In my case I also had to untick the 'enable advanced network functionality'.
i am starting to thing there maybe a big problems here , i have the same thing and nothing has helped,,diffant pc`s i have hard reset the phone, unticked Enable advanced network. and still nothing.
The problem that I found was the notifications queue for ActiveSync on my phone had been corrupted.
I downloaded memmaid and used the "recreate Activesync" under the database menu.
Unplug from the USB, run MemMaid and on the "JumpTo" softkey go to "Databases\Notification queue". Tap on the arrow to the right of "Add..." and tap "Recreate ActiveSync". Soft reset your phone wait 60 seconds after everything is loaded and plug the USB cable in. You should be good to go.
This is a known problem with ActiveSync and happens on a plethora of WMD's, not just the Kaiser or HTC. I used to have the same problem on an iPaq PPC. Microsoft's official answer to this was it was the OEM's fault for not following strict rules on implementing properly coded USB drivers.

Sorry partner, I guess it's not always the same problem.
I've been using my AT&T Tilt for nearly a month without any problems, but yesterday for reasons I cannot determine, my phone suddenly stopped being recognized by any version of Windows XP or Windows Vista. I tired Windows XP SP2 in a virtual machine on my Mac, I tried it on my wife's Windows Vista machine, and I tried it on my children's Windows Vista machine and I received the same error each and every time.
No matter what machine I plugged it into, I would immediately get a "USB Device Not Recognized" error and neither ActiveSync on Windows XP nor WMDC on Windows Vista would initiate a sync.
I've hard reset my phone multiple times, I've uninstalled and reinstalled both ActiveSync and WMDC, I've even flashed to a different OS on my phone (using my MicroSD card) and nothing has worked.
I'm beginning to wonder if maybe the USB connection on the phone may have failed. I've been contemplating sending it back to AT&T since I had a malfunctioning pixel in the middle of the screen, but with the recent problems I'm starting to lean more towards returning it and less towards living with the pixel issue.
Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing the USB problem?
Just a quick update, when I arrived at work today, I attempted to sync with my work computer (Windows Vista Business) and I had no trouble at all. I'm going to take home the cable that I have here (which came with the BlackBerry I use for work) and see if that makes any difference with my home computers.
wow
I can confirm this as well. I have the Tilt and I used a blackberry cable from my job and it synced up flawlessly. before i was getting that usb not recognized as well.
I'm having the exact same problem now.. it worked fine for 4 months and now.. it just says usb not recognized. Please post the results if your blackberry cable. thanks
I just tried a brand new usb cable and it still didn't work for me
I have the same problem but i've got a solution for this and it's very simple.
For someother reason ActiveSync will boot on the background of your device even when you close it, it will boot up within 10 min or less.
This is the thing you need to do:
Before you plugin your usb cable to sync......
Run taskmanager and close activesync. When you are sure that this application is not running then plugin your USB cable.
It worked for me!

I had this exact same problem happen to me at the end of November - I was using WMDC 6.1 for months then all of a sudden I could not connect (same error message you described). I went back and looked through the MS Windows updates and identified a NVIDEA driver update had caused my problem. Used system restore to roll it back and then everything worked fine.

Please help!
(Sorry to borrow this thread to solve the same problem but on another device btw, I own a Kaiser myself but currently didn't face any problem yet..touch wood!!)
Dwimmerlaik, did you have any luck fixing the problem?
Solved my USB Connection issue in Vista
After trying everything I could find on the net to solve my inability for Vista to stay connected with my HTC Kaiser (ATT TILT), I found the problem exists with the MicroSD card. No matter what, Vista would connect then disconnect my phone after a few seconds. After weeks of searching I finally just decided to take out my 2Gb MicroSD card.....and now Vista maintain connections and I am finally able to sync via WMDC.
Spread the Word!!!! Take out the MicroSD.

-Try to use the USBs at the back of your PC(not on the front of the case).
-Try to buy another cable(That SHOULD BE an USB2.0 HighSpeed certified shielded cable. That costs something about $6 ).

Didn't work for me either
I've tried doing that multiple times..
Go to phone, menu, options, time zones tab, uncheck the Auto change time zone & clock.
This is a known bug in the firmware that causes A/S to automatically start & then sometimes it tries to start a second sessions of A/S when you plug in to your PC. Give it a try, have you ever noticed that A/S is running in task manager even though you're not connected or just reset? Just one thought.

All of a sudden my activesync has stopped working. I can't connect via USB or bluetooth. It worked fine in the past! Now, if I plug in my Tilt with the USB it gives me an error message saying Activesync cannot connect, and gives me the option of troubleshooting. Going through the troubleshooting process yeilds no diagnosis; everything appears to be working ok.
If I try and sync with bluetooth, I see the Tilt connect, and then disconnect a few seconds later. No error messages, no nothing.
My Tilt's activesync window displays the message:
"To synchronize your device with a desktop computer, install the synchronization software from the Getting Started Disc included with your device on your PC." It once displayed info such as my last sync, etc.
I've tried reinstalling activesync, and disabled my firewalls.
Anybody else have this issue, or know of a fix?

Sounds like something has changed on your PC, perhaps via a Windows Update. Have you checked to see if your firewall is the culprit?
You may also want to do a clean uninstall and then reinstall Activeswync 4.5 and create a new partnership with your device.
You can also try restoring your PC back to a date that you were able to use Activesync....
This happens to me rather frequently (I am looking for an ActiveSync replacement because of it).
However, I fix it by either soft reset of the device, PC, or sometimes both. If that doesn't work, you need to delete the partnership with the PC and reconnect.
RK
...any solutions yet?
I just got my kaiser 3 weeks ago after using a wizard for almost 2 years. what a great phone the wizard was... I kinda miss using it! Anyhow, i just experienced the sudden activesync failure. I now get random activesync openings on my kaiser with the message "To synchronize your device with a desktop computer... yada yada".
I have already setup a bogus server and set the scheduling to manual.
I have compared the wizard registry to the kaiser registry by searching every instance of 'activesync' and couldnt find anything.
I also deleted all instances of activesync in the notification queue and had memmaid rebuild it.
The device will connect to activesync but pops an error message that it could not synchronize and goes into a guest account setting. So for now I am having to use pimbackup to backup my data on the kaiser, bluetooth it to my wizard, then sync the wizard with my laptop to get the data into outlook. I am considering a hard reset but kind of want to wait until the at&t 6.1 official Rom comes out. I am also considering Chapura Pocketmirror Professional which worked well on an old Ipaq i had (wm2k3) that had sync issues. I also want to get this resolved so i can practice loading a new rom on the wizard. So....
Anyone have a fix yet? I hope so!!!
Oh, and for reference (to answer questions from other threads), my kaiser battery drains 4 to 5 times faster than the wizard in side by side use, and the kaiser definitely does not have a transflective screen while the wizard does... bummer. but the kaiser is tremednously faster!
1. Disconnect the device from your computer.
2. Try going to your device and select:
start->settings->connections->USB to PC.
3. Uncheck "enable advanced network functionality"
4. Reconnect the device.

Hi,
You can try "PocketMirrorĀ® Professional 2.2.4 for Windows Mobile", its a pretty good syncronization tool, but it costs a few bucks...
I've been using the trial version of PocketMirror and must say its pretty good with my TYTN 2.

yeah, i tried the usb to pc option as well. even downloaded a cab from another thread that allowed me to choose rndis or usb mode. neither worked. I will probably use pocketmirror pro as well...
Hi, I just flashed a new ROM on my Orbit that works brilliantly, no issues at all, apart from the fact that the computer now doesn't see the device at all. Not even the blo-blong sound when you connect any USB device. The only thing I get connecting the cable is charging the battery. And if I start Active Sync on my Orbit I get the same message as mystic_nacho:
"To synchronize your device with a desktop computer, install the synchronization software from the Getting Started Disc included with your device on your PC"
I just tried an hard reset to try to fix the issue - no success..
Before flashing everything was fine..
Btw, my wife Diamond doesn't connect either, and it never did it: something related to the TouchFlo thing?
Any idea?
The ROM I flashed is
gullums TouchFlo2D beta 4
update
I found the Diamond 'Getting started disc' and installed the Windows Mobile resources tool...
The disc I have from the Orbit box is for Windows Mobile 5, I guess it's not worth to find it out and try...
Nothing changed, anyway.
update 2
Yesterday night out of the blue - while the Orbit was still connected to the pc - ActiveSync started to work... F. knows....
i had the same problem - sync was working fine and then stopped. what worked for me was to go to USB to PC under settings and uncheck "enable faster data syncronization".
hi,
i also had sync. problems in the past.
searched for months.. since i figured out that some registry entries on my PC where missing!

Have you recently used a memory cleaning Application like memmaid, Clear Temp, or SKTools? You might have cleaned out some important notification files, like repllog, exe that is used for activesync.
I had the same thing happen to me when I first used these cleaners. I had to do a hard reset on the phone to make it work again found out about the remedies listed below after the reset.
I have heard others were successful repairing these notification Queue's with MemMaid. You can hold your stylus on the repllog, exe notification, and a popup up will appear, asking you to Recreate ActiveSync, or rebuild notification Queue. I don't know if this feature is available in Clear Temp, or SK tools.
I've also heard of restoring activesync by unchecking all of the folders, syncing, and then adding each folder back to the list, one by one, until all is restored.
I too have just developed the same problem.
I have 2 TYTN II' one will sync fine the other wont.
It all went horribly wrong after I tried to install Wisbar and an Ipod theme, after I uninstalled it, cos it didn't work I found I could no longer sync with USB to PC and the sync option is greyed out on my phone. The phone will charge with some of my usb cables, but now even seems fussy about which cable will charge and some now won't.
I am given to wondering whether the usb connection on my Phone is the problem...everything else seems to be working fine.
I have even installed different ROMS via the memory card still the problem persists.
I would love someone to come up with a fix
**UPDATE**
Well I now have got it working, in my case I was right, the usb connection on the phone was to blame. I took it to a mobile repair shop, I told the guy that I thought it was faulty he took one look at it and said that I had a bent pin, he got a little tool out and teased it back into position, sure enough when I got home it worked fine so now I am able to sync again. Not sure how long it will last though.
**Update 2**
Failed again, at least I know what's wrong now.
Whenever I connect my Tilt (Original WWE HTC TYTN II rom 1.56.405.5 and radio 1.27.12.11 flashed on it) I sometimes get Activesync to connect and sync, and other times it just gets stuck saying "connecting" and the activesync icon is spinning and green permanently. In order to get out of that I have to pull the usb plug, but then the Tilt freezes and I have to do a soft reset. Then after that it connects and syncs fine for a few times and then it has the problem again. I have tried it with the "enabled advanced network functionality" checked and unchecked, and still the same issues. Although, I only tried it once with the box unchecked. Also, what I noticed is that when it is syncing and checking for changes on the device, it reads through my "favorites" like two times beofre it says "connected". I have other PPC synced on other computers and they never read completely through the favorites, once or even twice.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Re-post because no one answered: Weird Activesync Issue
Whenever I connect my AT&T branded Tilt (with Original WWE HTC TYTN II rom 1.56.405.5 and radio 1.27.12.11 flashed on it) I sometimes get Activesync to connect and sync, and other times it just gets stuck saying "connecting" and the activesync icon is spinning and green permanently. In order to get out of that I have to pull the usb plug, but then the Tilt freezes and I have to do a soft reset. Then after that it connects and syncs fine for a few times and then it has the problem again. First, a suggestion: Bump your old thread. Don't start a new one!
What other applications do you have running in the background? You said it syncs for a couple of times after soft-reset, so, I am wondering if you have any other applications causing the problem.
Lots of things could be causing your problem. Here are some things for you to try:
1. MOST IMPORTANT: Make sure that you plug your device directly into the computer. Do not plug the device into a USB hub or other device. If you are using a laptop, do not plug the device into USB ports in your docking station. More technically, make sure that the port you are using is a Root USB device, not a Generic USB one. This make quite a difference in Vista, because locking your computer or having a UAC prompt while you are connected to a generic USB device seems to interrupt the connection.
2. Make sure that you have "Advanced Network Funcationality" enabled.
2. Make sure that you have the latest version of ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista). If you are using Vista, the current version is 6.1. This version has some updated drivers that seems to help immensely with stability.
3. If you are using Vista, make sure you have all the latest OS updates installed. There was a Windows Update sometime back in November of 2007 that fixed some serious bugs in the USB drivers in Vista.
4. If you have Windows Firewall Client for ISA installed, do a search on the Microsoft website for possible problems with interactions between ActiveSync/WMDC and the firewall client.
Hope this helps.
Cardyin
In my experience - a year with an 8525 and 5 months with the Tilt - having "Advanced Network Functionality" disabled, gives more consistent positive results when syncing to a PC running XP.
OK.
Sherpa: I have no other applications running in the background. I always close all apps before a sync out of habit.
Also, I am not sure how to bump the thread.
Cardyin: I plug directly into my laptop, don't use a USB hub or anything. I don't have a dcoking station either.
I have the latest version of activesync: 4.5
I am using XP SP2.
I have no firewall.
dgduris: I have tried it both with "advanced network functionality" enabled and disabled, same results.
Thanks for responses
Anyone have any ideas about this problem??
Are you sure you don't have a firewall running? I have a similar problem with ZoneAlarm if I forget and leave the firewall on High security. I have to switch it to Medium security in order for ActiveSync not to freeze up like that.
I am positive, and if it was the firewall, it would do it all the time, not just every four or five syncs.
Anyone else have any ideas??
Anyone at all??
I can't solve the problem but I could advise as to a quicker way to get it synced when it decides to play up.
When mine does the interminable "connecting" business, I click on the "stop sync" button. It usually takes 20 seconds or so to stop.
I then click the "sync" button (same button) and the device always syncs immediately.
I don't know why it does this - and it does it a little too often for my liking - but that solution works for me.
It's a lot quicker than disconnecting and soft resetting too.
1) You say you dont have a firewall... I assume you mean other than the windows firewall. Try turning that off and then plugging it in. If it connects then you know it is a firewall issue. You can manually add the sync apps and ports to the firewall exlcusion list.
2) Try disabling the device lock if you use it. I had a shortlived problem with a pin lock blocking syncing. I disabled the pin, synced and then re-enabled the pin and it worked fine afterwards.
Tried that too...

Thanks Sparrow. I found that out myself before as well. But I am sure there is another way to fix this.
OK

Right, all I have is the windows firewall. I will disable that and try a few syncs.
As far as device lock or pin, I have none setup on my Tilt.
But Thanks for the responses.
Seems like at least one other person is having this issue. See Sparrowhawks post...
Anyone else have any ideas?? I tried the above advice and still not syncing correctly.
I have tried all the suggestions here and nothing is working. I can get the device to sync only about 3 or 4 times, and then it just keeps saying "looking for changes". I have the AT&T Tilt, with the original WWE HTC rom flashed on it. The way I have to get around this is to click "stop" on my PC and then wait abut 2 to 3 minutes for it to stop attempting to sync, and then when I click on "sync" on my PC it connects no porblem. Or I have to unplug the usb cable and soft reset the device, what a pain!
Anyone have any other ideas please?
I just noticed something else that may help identify the problem.
When I connect the usb cable to the device I get a pop up message from my laptop telling me that my wifi connection is connected and signal strength is good. This message is on the laptop, and then the device will not sync and keeps saying 'looking for changes' forever.
