If you are like me there are many times when you launch TomTom but you do not have any sound because your phone was on vibrate when it was launched or the volume on your phone was set too low to hear the voices. Well after some searching I came across this program on an Axim forum that will automatically turn your volume up when you launch TomTom and will turn it back to its original level when you quit TomTom. This works perfectly on my Kaiser.
Since we have internal GPS you will probably want to disable the bluetooth option in the configuration file.
You can find the thread here:
http://aximsite.com/boards/gps-talk/140969-tomtom-6-volume-override-loader.html
If you do not want to register I also attached the same file.
Wow, this is deadly intersting, thanks for your share I ll have a closer look into it
This is big news for me -- I always run my Tilt in vibration mode and I've given up with all the fuss of turning on the sound with TomTom anymore.
When TomTom is launched via the loader, I still get the 'No Sound' icon in the lower left hand corner of the map area. However, When I increase the volume (via slider wheel) the sound does indeed come on.
Not perfect, but a hell of a lot better than before!
If the DATA CONNECTION is active, you will get that issue.
So, check your DATA CONNECTION before turning on TomTom.
You dont need that prog.

I just tested this and you are right. That is a strange bug but it is good to know, however I use direct push so my data connection is always active so this program is still very helpful for me. For me the whole point is to just launch Tom Tom and be good to go. Disabling my data connection each time would be a hassle.
Question -- I have TomTom on my Tilt ... it installs fine, and works fine ... however each time I start it up the sound is turned off .. .and I have to touch the screen, turn on the sound twice before the change in settings "sticks" and I get the voice giving me directions.
Any thoughts how I can fix this?
Mine does the exact same thing, otherwise it works perfectly. Running XDA Live 1.1 ROM...
That is the default function. You must always activate the sound after starting.

hate to tell you guys, but it's not the default. The sound is on when I fire up Tom Tom on my Tilt, I've never had any issue nor had to go into settings to turn it on before. Are you guys using a ROM other then the original one?
Default off on both my HK Kaiser & my AT&T Tilt. Don't know what to tell you.
Solution that works for me!
I have found that all I have to do is to rotate the volume wheel on the side of my Tilt and the sound gets turned on without having to go through the preferences menu. It will repeat the last direction when you do this but it doesn't bother me too much and it lets me know that the sound is enabled.
The same issues occur with the previous version 6.03
And on other PPCs as well (eg IPAQ hw6910).
But it does not happen always, so I deduce it's related to conflicts with other softwares.
And it certainly isn't a feature, as a previous poster suggested.
TT as a default always starts with sound ON.

I didn't have this problem until about 30 minutes ago, I received the Carcomm Cradle I ordered for the car, installed it, tried out TomTom and now I have the same problem as you.
Are any of you using a Carcomm Cradle?
The only other thing I changed before the sound problem is I bought a "Veripart 3-in-1 Converter HTC ExtUSB" so I can charge the PDA and listen to music using the 3,5 mm jack port.
I also have exactly the same problem, and solve it with the volume wheel. I also had this problem on my Hermes.
TomTom 'fixes'
FWIW, not sure why, but the volume wheel never solves my problem in a predictable fashion, so I've went and found the following apps that make things easier:
TomTom Menu Builder -- Change the location of where the 'Turn on sound' or any button shows up in the menu for faster access. e.g., I've placed my 'Turn on sound' button on page 1 with 'Navigate to' and 'exit application'. The menu also allows you to enable all sorts of 'hidden' menus, with the most useful being the voice preferences menu, which lets you choose how verbose the speaker is. Alternatively, if you're not up to installing the menu builder, you could download my TomTom menu (see attached). Either way, place TomTom.mnu in \TomTom\SdkRegistry.
TomTom Starter -- Make your phone volume max and turn off all notification popups before starting TomTom. Reverses volume and notification changes after exiting TomTom. Great for when you forget that your phone is on vibrate or at a low sound setting.
BTW, its not the ROM that is the problem, it most likely has to do with TomTom. I'm using 6.03, non-taster edition.
The sound will be muted when you start TomTom with a data connection active. If you disconnect your data connection (G, 3G or H) before starting TomTom the sound should be on.....

Thanks michi123, I seem to recall reading about this in another thread. However, that's still yet another application (comm manager) and button I need to press before starting TomTom.
It's much easier for me to use the two applications I've included, as I'll need to go into the menu anyway to enter my navigation point and should I forget to turn off vibrate or crank up my volume, TomTomStarter fixes that for me...

Excellent! That works. And unless you have changed the functionality of your end button (like in the xda ROM) it is pretty quick to hold down the red end button (to close all data connections) before opening TomTom.
But it's not very effective when you're using a converged device, right?
I mean, would you turn off your phone every time you'd want to load TT, and then have to remember to turn it back on (while still inside TT)?

All holding down the end key does is cancel all active data connections .. it does not "turn off" the phone (unless you happen to be on a call). So yes, if you want to tun TT when you are on the phone, this solution will not work, but if you want to run TT when you are not actively speaking, holding down the end key first solves the sound problem. Then, you can still make and receive calls and, for that matter, you can still use data programs too, all with TT running.
Very useful thread, I've just updated mine and my G/Fs TyTns, we both have exactly the same ROM and RADIO, hers starts with Volume on, Mine starts with Volume off, the only real difference is that we're on different service providers, we both have MS ActiveSync running against our different corporate Exchange servers, and I have reduced my connectivity to GPRS to save battery. Will give the Tweaker app a go and see what happens. Sh
Alex. What version of tomtom are you running. I cannot get the menu file to work with my version 6.032(8351) no taster version.
Hi guys,
I just wanted to post on here cos I noticed some information that I didn’t agree with and also I have tested what others have said and it works so I thought I would say thankyou in one breath and bugger in another.
I have tested TomTom 6.031 SDK version on a HTC TyTN2, Glofiish, HP614c, HTC p3300 and a HTC Cruise and all of them start TomTom with the sound muted if they have a data connection active!
Sound is not muted at start-up if there is no data connection. This is great to know as I was baffled by it all but it also causes me a pain in that I need the data connection all the time, so I think its a mistake if TomTom themselves presume otherwise.
I have a XDA Orbit 2 on order but I am guessing it will be the same with that. I dont remember this issue with Windows Mobile 5, but it happens for sure on 6.
Also I have an issue with the 6.031 SDK and the unmute function call doesn’t appear to work!
Ho hum... so many devices with the same issue....
Ram
I have to admit I made a slight error in my statement above, I hadn’t tried it on the HTC p3300 and got the same result, it would appear that the HTC p3300 is the only device out of the many I have tried that doesn’t switch to silent when loading TomTom while a data connection is active.
I am trying to work out why this is as I am running the same software installation on all the devices.
Whenever I have Live Search open and using the map feature with GPS, if a call comes in, I lose all sound and have to reboot the phone, otherwise I cant hear the caller and he cant hear me. This has happened twice so far. Using Dutty's Nu-Skool ROM with Radio 1.27.12.17
Anybody else experience this?
i lose sound at least once a day and i do use ms live search. i will look to see if that program is open next time it happens. i though it was a BT issue but could be live search.
its definitely live search thats causing it.....

Fantastic Article Bengalih!
One added request. It would be great to include, perhaps in a text attachment, ms voice command's list of progam files and registry entries.
Seperate by the two primary versions for 1.6.
The information would invaluable for cooks to go back into a clean rom and clean out left over files and registry entries or allow them to strip the full version out if they wish to upgrade it or leave it out entirely.
Left over files/reg entries may as you know cause issues when adding or upgrading the ms voice.

Cancel VC announcement while In progress?
Bengalih, Great write up!
Is there a way that you know of to cancel VC's announcement mid stream? That is to say, there are times when VC will start to announce an email, or read SMS while I am on a call and I would like a way to shut it up quickly. It is terrible when you are on the phone with client A and your phone starts to announce a call from client B, or even worse sitting quietly on a conference call and it starts reading an SMS... Some how this always bleeds through my BT headset so the person I am on the phone with hears it.
Thanks!

crussell. Thanks for the vote of support. Unfortunately the issue you describe plagues me as well. I don't think there is anything wrong with the software and by this I mean it isn't a bug, just something the developers didn't think through very well.
There are only two ways to stop the incoming announcements:
Turn them off
Check the box in Notifications that says "Only during free time"
What this box means is that if you have an appointment in your calendar that sets your free/busy disposition to "busy" then announcements will not come through.
However, if you get an incoming call you will still get the call waiting beeps which can be just as distracting (if anyone knows how to turn these off please let me know...they are unrelated to MSVC).
So, if you know you are going to be on an important call you can first go into your calendar and make an appointment and set your time to busy.
The only solution I can see, short of a new version which takes these things into account is if someone can figure out how to fool the system into thinking your time is "busy". I don't know if MSVC looks for a registry flag or if there is a free/busy connector (API) that it taps into. If someone could make a little app that would toggle free/busy time that would be fantastic. Unfortunately I cannot code for WM to this degree.
AHA!
I take back what I said...at least the part of me not knowing how to fix it
There does indeed appear to be a registry location that records your current free/busy status.
I have written another script tool which will perform a toggle of your free/busy status effectively turning off any incoming announcements when toggled off.

ROM: 1.62.502.0 (ATT Tilt Shipped ROM)
MSVC Version: 1.6.17913
Bluetooth Headset: Motorola 89199N
Description:
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, but I've stopped using MSVC on my Tilt via Bluetooth because 3 of 3 times I've messed with this (getting battery status, call person, etc type commands) I've found later that the phone won't dial out or receive calls anymore! First two times it happened I was a bit puzzled, but the third time it clicked that it only happened sometime after initiating a call or such via MSVC with Bluetooth.
Anyone else noticed this? I find it odd that it'd freeze up the phone portion of the Tilt, but it does 100% of the time for me. IIRC, hitting the Green button shows the Phone titlebar and menus but the screen itself never draws. I can hit the OK button to get back to the Today screen, and the Phone app is listed in the list of applications running I believe, but it won't die and won't work until I do a reset.
I installed MSVC from a CAB here on this forum, and it generally works but this problem with bluetooth is pretty annoying as the main reason I wanted to get the program is to do bluetooth commands for dialing.
The more I think about it, it's possible that using the bluetooth commands then doing "run command suspend" (I think that's the syntax, it's been a few weeks since I tried it last) to turn off the Tilt immediately might also cause it problems. I was doing that because otherwise it stays on for quite a while, when it seems to me it should turn itself off fairly quickly.
I'll try your new version and edit-back
I have never experienced this issue with MSVC. I have tried it out successfully on at least half a dozen ROMS.
Although I am not intimately familiar with the inner working of code in either MSVC or WM in general, I don't know really know how this could interfere.
Other reported issues with MSVC involve:
Audio gateway being left open
Radio going dead
I'm also not sure how MSVC could interfere with the radio....
My first thought is Don't Blame MSVC!
I say this since I (and many other's) haven't had problems with it...it obviously is a program that CAN function properly.
If you are using a cooked ROM that has MSVC built-in or you are installing it from scratch, read through this whole guide and make sure you understand and update/tweak your copy.
I would recommend installing the latest version I have posted 1.6.19290 as I have already had reports of this clearing up some people's issue.
When posting problems regarding MSVC in the future, please refer to the main thread posts, where I will detail the information you should provide.
Let me know what you come up with!
I've got an issue I can't find an answer to. I have MSVC installed on my Tilt and it worked fine up until about a week ago. Since then I can initiate MSVC via my bluetooth headset but get no audio for the prompts (i.e. the ding to tell me it's ready for input, the audio confirmation for who to call).
Also, notifications stopped working via bluetooth. I've checked all the settings and everything is fine, they're exactly as they were when VC was working properly. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling and deleting and repairing my headset. Nothing seems to work.
Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.
HI all,
I have setup MS Voice command on my Fuze to announce the name or phone number of the person calling on in coming calls. On my Tilt, it would announce the name either thru the speaker or my BT headset. With the Fuze, it will not. Is anyone else having this problem.
Also, with my Tilt, my ring tones would play thru my BT Headset and it will not on the Fuze. I don't know if this are related. I am using the BT headset on both.
Thanks
billf.
Yes, I'm having this same problem, and it is making me consider returning my Fuze and sticking with my tilt. Unless HTC or someone comes up with a fix within the next 2 weeks, my Fuze is going back. The only other bug I have noticed is that auto-correct does NOT work for the keyboard. It's supposed to automatically add in apostrophes for words, such as "can't, don't, won't" etc. Also, the word suggestion never shows up when I type, like it did on my Tilt. Of course it gives you suggestions with T9 turned on, but that's not the same as word suggestion. It would provide suggestions based on previous typing habits, and even predict entire phrases it thought I was going to type. Anyway....if someone figures out how to fix these problems, please let me know ASAP! Thanks.
I just noticed this tread. I too am having the same problem with it not announcing. My Tilt did it just fine and I have the Fuze VC set up exactly the same way as my Tilt, but all I get is my ringtone and no announcement.
Check your settings. I think you have to announce notifications using bluetooth hands free if available. and uncheck "only durning free time"
I think that may work.

That is the way I have it set up. No go. What is weird is that my ring tone plays over the bluetooth headset, but the computer generated voice doesn't speak.
it has to be a bad version or something.
also..last night i tried to install the cab i've used for over a year on top of the at&t version thinking it would overwrite the necessary files. no go. it corrupted the phone and had to hard reset to fix.

I'm glad that you decided to be a "guinea pig!" Because I was going to try this today! I was going to re-install the .CAB that came from my Tilt. But I'm glad to see if that doesn't work. In order to find a solution, do you think I should call AT&T or HTC? Which one would give me the solution? Because I only have 25 days left before my Fuze is non-returnable.
Hmm I never tried it yet on the fuze with my BT. I'll try it and report back.
Ok crap. Yeah. It doesnt "voice" announce. I never noticed it because I can dial from headset and even number dial from headset and it'll work. I can hear it repeating the number back.
BUT its not like its not working... If I remove the announce incommming calls, it makes my phone ring, but in my earpiece I hear a tone to tell me I have a phonecall. When I enable announce incomming calls, my phone vibrates and I hear my ringtone in my ear, and faintly I can hear that "tone" I heard before. So it sounds like the voice side of things isnt working.
Ok tried one last thing before my BT headset died. Doh!
When it died, my phone announced the caller. So it does work. Its just not working from the BT headset, you hear a bell sound or something.
Also, I just noticed my cars BT doesn't show battery of the phone. When my Tilt was on the car BT, it would show the battery remaining.

Thanks for the link. I dont think it solved anything we're getting. Since Fuze has it built in, I dont think we can overwrite the files.

Guess I didn't notice, but dose not work for me either. I do enjoy that on the Tilt, but I more like the Tilt for the message and email voice notification.
Beahcboyde/JON
PS. I'm simply not keeping the Fuze. I'll stick with my Tilt and TF2. love the whole setup and the speed of the touchflo usingHyperDragon Raphael
Signal is average compaired to my Tilt, when testing out T-Mobile connection. On 3G, I'm constantly around 2 bars(but it spurts to full so I know its working) So I think Hawaii is still bad with 3G is some areas.
I use VC ALOT. So I'm amazed I never noticed this issue where it wont say the caller in my ear.
I'm not sure if I'll keep the phone/drop ATT/both.
Please someone fix this! I dunno if it helps, but all you hear is a bell sound in the background of your normal phone ringtone. I know thats from the MSVC. The only thing not working is the announcement of whos calling. I think everything else is working. I can voice dial, recieve calender announcements and appoinments, etc from my BT headset.
Oh, not just BT headset. It won't announce it from the phone either.
I even did a "bloat free" installation.
the fix is on pdaphonehome.com i had the same problem with my sprint touch pro. weird since the diamond doesn't have this problem. you have to edit the registry to use the wav file instead of the default. only side effect with the fix is the phone will ring once and VC will announce the rest of the duration.
sid
Eww,junk fix. I'll check it out tho. While not a problem when I have my headset, it would be if i had my phone sitting on a table.
Reg hack
I copied this from pdaphonehome.com....kuddos to the person that figured this
out. Kind of a hacky way to get it to work though. Perhaps the brains around
here can figure it out.
--------------------------------paste-------------------------------
This isn't a complete solution - but it's an improvement.
With this fix - the ring tone will play for a second and then be cut off by the call announcement. The announcement will be at a lower volume. The announcement will repeat - the ring tone will not be played again.
NOTE THAT YOU SHOULD ATTEMPT THIS FIX ONLY IF YOU ARE COMFORTABLE IN UPDATING YOUR REGISTRY.
Change the following registry keys:
HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\TTSAnnounce\Category
change from VoiceCommand1 to Ring
HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\TTSAnnounce\Script
change from as5p to v0p (that's v-zero-p) - for vibrate & ring, or p (ring only)
The above fix seems to get the announcements reliably, and doesn't break the set vibrate/set ringer features in the TF3D interface.
Hopefully we can find a better solution - that will restore the full functionality of Voice Command incoming call announcements - and not need this hack.
Another option is to manually overwrite the ringtone file name:
HKCU\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\Sound
change to \Application Data\Volatile\TTSCallerID.wav
This fix replaces the ringtone with the call announcement - and at full volume.
BUT this solution has several problems, including breaking the set vibrate/set ringer feature in TF3D.
From reading that, if I DON'T use the TF3D ring/vibrate, but use the windows mobile one, I should be fine by doing the second hack listed above? I think I could live with that as I eventually will kill the TF3D just so I can get the calender of my Pocket Informant to show instead. Only thing I like was the Weather and clock of the TF3D anyways and ATT crippled the clock by removing the animation.
Doe anybody know how to do the 2nd option? Not sure if I'm supposed to delete the whole registry line or somehow add to that line?
