Original HTC ROM may be better for some in USA

I have the HTC branded P3600 unlocked.
I tried out both LVSW's cooked ROM and the latest Dopod D810 ROM. Both are excelllent updates, but turned out not to be right for me. Thought I'd share in case this is useful to anyone else.
I am in an area of Los Angeles in the US which still does not yet have 3G. I also don't personally need the GPS feature. I am fine with an ordinary map and I need my battery life for phone and email. That is just my personal preference.
Anyway, in my case, I found three pitfalls with the new ROMs.
1. The phone got hotter and used more battery. I assume that the GPS was trying to do its thing even though I wasn't actually using it.
2. Signal can be sketchy at my home. The HTC P3600 has been the first PDA phone to give me a full strength signal here, on a par with a standard cell phone. But with the new ROMs my full bar strength fell in half. I assume this is to do with further optimizations for 3G which, unfortunately, currently give me no benefit. Anyhow, I got weaker GPRS/EDGE and weaker GSM.
3. The Dopod ROM (and LVSW cooked variant - which is a very nice job BTW) have significantly different ActiveSync/Direct Push settings. The Heartbeat Increments and other related settings are quite different. This was not good for my Exchange service and Push Mail. I started getting my mail at about 5 minute intervals, not right away. Some kind of timeout going on I guess. Of course, I was able to dip into the registry and make adjustments, but with my lower EDGE signal, things still were not working quite as well.
Bottom line: I went back to the Official HTC P3600 ROM (fortunately I had saved it before it had to be removed from the XDA-Dev FTP site. (HTC do not provide even the original ROM to customers at this time). There was no problem going back. So no harm, no foul.
I did save the HTC Task Manager application and added it back in. Nice addition, missing from the original HTC version. So it was definitely worth trying the new ROMs all in all.
Obviously, the issue here is that my local Network is lacking - the new ROMs are good. But the fact remained the original ROM gives me much better performance here, particularly battery life, signal strength and more reliable Direct Push.

Sorry for the unrelated post, but I needed some help after reading your post.
I am also in the Los Angeles area (OC) with T-Mobile.
I got an unlocked trinity about 2 months ago. It has worked very well, except I do not seem to be able to connect to Edge. Your post seemed to indicate that you have been able to connect to it.
Can you please tell me how I can make that happen?
Also, which GPS software would you recommend for Southern California, if I chose to enable the GPS hardware on my machine.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi Kewlphone! I think (hope!) you are actually getting Edge. For some reason the HTC P3600 simply displays the G symbol even when you are getting Edge. To be fair I think Edge is just an upgraded form of GPRS. Actually if you install the Dopod ROM it does give you the E symbol. There may well be a registry tweak to show an E, but I just don't know it.
There are no special settings needed. I just connect to wap.voicestream.com.
internet2.voicestream.com also works with my Internet plan, but I prefer to connect the first one as it also is the right one for picture messaging. Also you want to have T-Mobile Internet, not just the T-Mobile Web plan (formery t-zones) which is restricted to sites for phones and does not allow full Internet access or downloading attachments.
T-Mobile just tightened up their protocols dues to a cheat some people had been using to get full access out of the Web plan. This temporarily messed up my Internet access but tech support reprovisioned my account as I pay for the full Internet plan.
First off, I suggest you check your actual download speeds using

It is speed test specially for Mobile devices. If you get around 30 to 40 kbps ish that is standard GPRS. Edge should be around 100 to 120 ish in practice. Obviously it varies a lot by time of day, location etc.
There is also a registry tweak I found that may help download speed. You need a registry editor like Total Commander available from ghisler.com (You would want to download the 2.5 beta version for WM5. It is free).
The registry setting involved determines how much data the device will accept in a chunk.
HKLM\Comm\Tcpip\Parms\TcpWindowSize
If your device has this parameter set to less than 65536 change it to this amount. This helped me get consisitent Edge speeds. I am not aware of any harm that will be done be setting it higher still, other than you may need to set it back again if it doesn't work right!
Sorry, I have no experience with GPS software. The program people mention generally is Tom Tom. I believe this is the defacto choice for many people and it is made for many different devices. I am sure the company has a web site. If not I am sure it is available at places like mobileplanet.com.
Please bear in mind that we people using this site (XDA-dev) are enthusiasts who like to tweak and customize our phones. It is not our objective to help ourselves to free software, only to get the most out of the devices and the built-in software we have already paid for... I don't mean to suggest you are looking for any free downloads and you certainly did not imply that. I am just conscious there has just been an issue with Microsoft objecting to some of the downloads on this site so we need to be careful to keep things absolutely clearly legit. Tom Tom is a commericial product not included with the P3600 and will need to be purchased separately.

I am also in LA (West side.) Here is my experience:
I use LVSW's ROM and get 3G (Cingular.) Just tested a 1MB file download from the dslreports link above and got 642kbit/sec. There are some areas in town where it goes to E (for EDGE,) but at least in my case it's not too often (it went to E yesterday in the Custom's area at LAX, but to be honest, I was just happy to get signal there
The GPS works great. I don't really use it here, because I have built-in ones in my cars, but it is very handy when travelling.
I also don't use Cingular's push mail, but use my POP3 mail account, and have set the Trinity to check it every 15 minutes, which works fine for me.

642kbps?? WOW! Excuse me while a turn as green as the HTC theme with envy! That is intersting for me as I am also on LA's west side. BTW I concur about reception inside LAX customs area. Just being able to make a regular call from there is a feat! Hardly a concern that your data merely dropped to Edge speed!
I had been considering switching to Cingular to get 3G, although both where I live and where I work are both actually just off the official 3G map at the moment.... Switching would also just about double my bill, and put me back in a contract. So I am holding out till 3G coverage settles down a bit more. Looks like T-Mobile are finally going to 3G here, though that may still take many months...
Do Cingular even offer there own Push Mail? I was under the impression that their Xpress mail service retreives mail something like the T-Mobile equivilent (15 minutes intervals) I use Direct Push from my Exchange account so it requires only the Data connection, nothing else carrier specific.

The relevant point is that it is good to know that the LVSW ROMs seems like the best for people in the USA too, assuming your carrier has 3G and especially if you use GPS. My situation sounds like the exception and will likely be transitory anyway.
BTW MacGuy2006, I think kewlphone might appreciate your advice on GPS software. Sounds like you have quite a bit of experience with it.

Yeah, I am sort of satisfied with Cingular, and really do like 3G, which finally makes PDA Internet use a possibility for me (I can read the wires if I am stuck somewhere They refer to "push-mail," but I have not tried it, so I don't know if it's instantaneous or not.
As to GPS software, I use TomTom 6, which is generally fine and has a broad range of maps. I kind of like the design of Navigon 6 a bit better (http://www.navigon.com/site/us/en/mobile_navigation/pda/screenshots,) but have not seen it in action.
As an aside, yesterday I installed the 1.38.00.11 radio ROM lurking here, and my 3G speeds never exceeded the mid-400s. It may have been a fluke, but I went back to 1.35 and clocked in the mid-700

I'm using the Dopod Rom with the 1.38 radio upgrade. As expected, the battery life is significantly reduced with the GPS enabled (using TomTom6), but overall I really like the fact that my phone can basically do anything now.
I think it might have more difficulty picking up signals now than it did with the original HTC rom. When I'm in my home office, I really don't get any signal at all now, which my plethora of computer equipment doesn't help, but the phone shows a solid four bars when I'm at work, and it connects to Edge very fast there too.
I tried both TomTom 6.02 and 6.03, and 6.03 is definitely better. It automatically knows to use the built-in GPS receiver (You don't have to select NMEA, COM 9), and it grabs the signal faster. Unfortunately I couldn't get the maps activated for 6.03, but they don't have any problem with 6.02, so I'm stuck with it.
I'm definitely looking forward to upgrading to WM6. Woot!

I have the full t-mo web plan, but have specifically taken access to internet3.voicestream.com becuase of VPN access needs.
I ran a speed test on my device and it shows 39 kbps. That tells me it is a regular GPRS connection. Do you know of any areas in the region where Edge is available? Sounds like westside may be one.
As far as GPS software goes, I was looking for recommendations based on availability and correctness of maps for southern cal. I had purchased and used Ostia in the past, however I did not like either the interface or stability.

AFAIK, TomTom uses Tele Atlas maps, which are fine (but I had one problem finding a a street in Orange County.) Navigon, I believe, uses Navteq maps, which I think of as more accurate (one of mine built-in navigation systems uses Navteq maps, and it has never lied to me

I appreciate the helpful posts on using GPS and the various software options. Good to know. Nothing I can add, you good people all know way more than I do, I don't see reduced battery life with GPS as a "fault" in any way - just a law of physics. For example, if I had my phone on for web browsing all the time at full brightness and used bluetooth plus wireless non-stop, the battery is going to run down faster. That's fair enough. I did notice there seemed to be a little bit of more drain with the GPS ROMs even with GPS inactive. I wonder if it ticks away in the background ready for use? It does certainly seem that enabling additional features might be reducing standard GSM sgnal strength. My feeling is that a little bit of internal radio interference might be a reasonable thing to expect. The Trinity has goodness how many radios? 4 bands of GSM, 3 Bands of w/CDMA, BlueTooth, WiFi, GPS... all in a device the size of deck of cards. Again, the laws of physics may simply apply.
The bottom line I get from this is there is unlikely to be a benefit in upgrading to a ROM which provides features I am not accessing. That doesn't mean the new ROMs are anything less than great, just not of benefit with my carrier in my location at this moment.
kewlphone, I definitely think you should be getting Edge speeds everywhere in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas, without even doing any tweaks. Bear in mind the standard HTC P3600 ROM always seems to just show the G, the key test is the speed not the symbol. But the speed you describe is not Edge. It will vary by time of day and location etc, so it is worth repeating the test quite a few times. You defintely should be seeing at least 100k when you have a full signal strength in urban areas, especially at off-peak hours... at least some of the time! I think you should call Customer Support and ask for a data specialist and talk it over with them. Perhaps they can reset your data account or help in some way. The positive spin I always go for to keep them on my side even though I have an unsupported phone is by explaining I am a loyal customer but the phones they offer don't meet my needs at present. So I am using my own phone because otherwise I would have to switch to another carrier and I don't want to "because you guys are so great" etc etc. In a few months there will be more T-Mobile phones available and I will be getting one. In the meantime I need to make things work so I can stay with T-Mobile. This is a semi-truth and but greatly overstates my loyalty, which is really only limited to the killer deal I get on a huge bucket of minutes (and is being serverely tested by their lagging in the 3G...) but it is a positive spin to give them a good reason to help me even though my phone is unsupported.
BTW I describe the Trinity as being most like the MDA but a generation or two on. If you get a decent data technician the chances are good they will know what you are talking about and will also be well away of T-Mo's limitations themselves. Chances are good they will do their best to help.
A place that might be helpful and more appropriate for discussing US carrier issues is howardforums dot com. They also have a Wiki which is quite useful. Obviously the XDA-Dev forum is for the tech stuff and tweaking to the the max! I think I have the same user name on howardforums so maybe we can find a good thread for trouble shooting our carrier stuff over there. Don't think I have actually posted yet but I will do as I ultimately need to decide whether to stick with T-Mo or jump to Cingy/ATT. If you register with the same name it will be easy for me spot you on their board. All the best. Please let me know about your progress

Sorry to bump this thread when it is probably only of interest to a small number of people - perhaps mostly in L.A. on T-Mo.
Quick update: I must confess that I caved in and have switched to Cingy/ATT. Much better signal strength where I live, even just on EDGE. I don't like their sky high rates or customer service all that much, plus their data plans are a riduculously complicated mess of choices... but they do have a lot of 3G and much better coverage in my location...oh well. Also feel like it will still surely take T-Mo a lot of time to deploy their own 3G... and I can always go back later!
Anyway, it now really made sense for me to upgrade my ROM. I have also been trying out GPS, just wih the free Google Maps for the monent as a little taster test! Pretty cool though
Another really big reason I gave up on the standard ROM was that I kept having the age old issue of my reminders not sounding and could cure only it with a hard reset each time. It has yet to be seen if the updated ROM helps or not. I realize the non-sounding reminders issue is a well known Windows Mobile problem, but it was happening every couple of weeks rather than once in a while. Anyone got any thoughts on this please???
The reminders issue is probably my biggest factor in picking a ROM and there is no obvious way of choosing between the HTC/LVSW/Dopod options other than trying them all. I cling to av ague hope someone might have already been through this one...
Oh, BTW I am using LVSW 1.24.0.0 with Radio 1.33.00.11

You only need the $19.99 unlimited media works plan to take advantage of 3G. Cingular will tell you that you must have the $49.99 pda plan but you do not, trust me I use my trinity with the media works plan and I use 3G perfect usually around 350kbs, for streaming video.

same here...i'm using the unlimited $19.99 plan and i also use my phone for internet sharing with my laptop (e.g., phone as a modem).

Thanks good people. I had noticed that the MEdia Net plans seems to do the job (without restriction if the proxy is not used) but could not be sure if that was a lucky fluke or that is how it is...
Good to hear the definite facts from people with solid experience.... and I much appreciate it.
Coming in, I do really think the Cingy data plans are a confusing mess... I would imagine the average Joe or Jane walking into a phone store could feel overwhelmed. I think they should simplify the plans... but what do I know? (Not much, I admit!)
While we are talking Trinty and Cingular may I ask which ROM people feel is best for stabilty right now? I was having that prob with reminders not sounding... an old issue, but much worse than usual! Any guidance would be welcomed.

Tytn2 trouble

Over the last week or so my htc has been driving me nuts!
Calls just dont come through to me. It seems to be going straight to my mailbox and then Text messages are also delayed.
I cant make calls as it drops it before it even connects with the other party.
However, when I soft reset it works fine to just after the 1st call I make.
I dont want to hand it in for repairs, that saying if I can fix it myself with the help of Xda-developers.
Can anybody help me?

Unlike others who flame people for not reading or searching I will not because you have stated you searched. The solution maybe simple... Do you keep an open data connection at all times? If so that maybe an issue, try ending the data call when youre not in use and see if that helps. Ive noticed with my tilt that if I keep the data connection always open my SMS will be delayed and won't recieve all my calls.

seem to have been my Network type settings
If set on auto the phone drops calls, but if Gsm is selected, its perfect.
I do notice however that .. I only Gprs available now and 3G or Hsdpa is not used as usual.
A bit annoying , but i guess its better then the phone missing calls.

Sounds like you have the dreaded dead 3G radio problem. Forcing to GSM will work, at least for some time. If you want full functionality back, that will require sending the phone in for repair.

Anyway to fix it myself?

ok so i have a wizard.. a g3, and i've done it all now.. i've tried all the roms (amp, snn, hornet.. brushed)
and with each came it's flaws, whether it was battery consumption, irratic or unintended operation, or missed calls.
i finally settled on a rom (TNT something or other) that i liked, i liked the rainbow at the top giving battery status.. altho it began to chew the battery like a hungry dog on food scraps. and then i checked my voicemail, just arbitrarily.. EIGHT NEW MESSAGES. turns out the whole world was calling, and leaving voicemails, and i was completely unaware! (yet another rom busted)
i'm in the process (actually just finished) reflashin my original cingular rom back on the phone.. i have thrown in the towel.
so i have started this thread, to see, if one of the mega-brains around here has some ideas for me.
i read somewhere that changing radios might help.. but i don't understand why i have to change radios; this one worked before i started dickin with this phone!
so the question is: should i have gone forward with this radio changing, would it have really helped? or is every rom out there just too buggy to deal with? am i really better off attempting to cook my own, or should i just leave the whole damn thing alone and upload HTC home customizer and smartskey, like i had back in 2006..?
i mean i've lost everything at one point or another; stability went away with some roms (crashing everywhere), most every rom lost the MMS capability (could send, never receive), most every rom lost the ability to send an email from an SMS (Which was big for me, but i think it was related to wm6) now the rom i'm using (which is not the one in my signature) doesn't receive calls, missed calls, voicemails, and most text messages.
was all that i have learned on XDA a bust, or is there ONE MORE TWEAK that i needed to perform that would have made my phone... a phone again?

I would just keep looking until you find a rom that suits your needs.

The first if you like cube thingy, the second I use now because it is very very stable, good battery life 2-3 days of use and 5+ days on standby.
Never missed a call, loads of memory and storage I can not fault it at all.
P.s. my radio is 02.07.10

The general consensus here (this issue has been discussed over and over in this forum) is that radio 2.19.11 is the most stable, and should solve your missed calls/messages problem. It solved mine.
By all means, Cook your own ROM. It's the only way to get the ROM you want and it's not that hard. It only took me downloading and flashing 2 ROMs before I said "to heck with this I'm cooking my own".

i have followed this website for a year or two now, and despite having rarely posted any replies or any type of correspondance, i have noticed you tend to reply on most every thread, often with good info. i have also noticed, however, that most readers and junior/noobs take offense to what you say, but i have read so much of your work that i actually do not. i did just find your post to the first (and likely only) thread i've ever started to be terribly humorous! it is truely in line with a comment you might make. thanks for the help!

I had the same issues... missed calls, voicemail, text message alerts not appearing all due to one thing, wm6 and 6.1. One thing that helped me out was to have data connection (GPRS/EDGE) turn off automatically after a set ammount of time and BAM! no more missed calls. Advanced Config program will do it easily or GB-SOFT Tweak. Hope that helps! Also, 2.19.11 radio only helps a little also....

Talk about jumping to conclusions. I am using WM6 and since I loaded radio 2.19.11 I NEVER have missed calls or messages....
When I got my phone and it had WM5 it was the worst performing PocketPC I've ever had. Now, with WM6 it is the BEST performing PocketPC I've ever had.

Same goes here for me too!

New Phone
Don't you just wish you had a new phone whenever you wanted? I do.
Every time I flash a new ROM (and I flash OFTEN) I get a brand new phone to play with. (I'm not an addict, I just do it because it's fun )
If I just wanted a phone that worked I could use any non-smart phone. They all have PIM's now and lots of them have QWERTY keyboards.
I agree that there does not seem to be any perfect ROMS and that statement includes the OEM's. A complex device makes it nearly impossible for everything to be perfect (just look at the desktop version of Windows!)
Sometimes I too get frustrated when I flash the latest and greatest and find out it's missing something I "need" and have to start the process all over.
But, when I can afford my new Fuze, I'll still be here screwing with it!

Talk about jumping to conclusions. I am using WM6 and since I loaded radio 2.19.11 I NEVER have missed calls or messages....
When I got my phone and it had WM5 it was the worst performing PocketPC I've ever had. Now, with WM6 it is the BEST performing PocketPC I've ever had.

Well....... I never had missed calls with wm5 but the os generally performed poorly so it's a matter of what you value more having missed calls or better os performance. No jumping to conclusions here. I have trouble shooted this issue for several months. And I'm not the only one one with missed calls while data connection is active. Do and search and see the countless threads on this repeated issue. Plus, it could be a provider related issue but seems to be with both at&t and tmobile us customers. Glad you don't have issues though...

i think you are right because.. there's something that is different from 5 to 6. for some reason my gay AT&T needs to switch data connections to do different things. like if you connect to ATT data to surf PIE lets say.. then you decide to send an MMS.. it will have to unconnect then reconnect..? and wm6.1 rarely decides to do that on it's own (like when someone sends you a picture message)

By blaming your problems on WM6, you're jumping to conclusions...You really don't know what's causing your problems. If it was WM6 then I'd be having problems too, but I'm not, so how could it be WM6?
I could say that it must be your connection settings that is causing you problems when ATT switches connections for an MMS, but then I'd be jumping to conclusions even though that's a more likely cause than WM6 having a blanket problem.

I need help PLEASE. TILT FREAKING OUT!

I recently erased and reinstalled the rom (it just wasn't running as clean as I wanted to)which is the basic rom that came from ATT. Anyways. i'm having troubles as:
1) I get no response sometimes with the touch screen. Whether I touch hard or soft.After 3 seconds or so of constant tapping it comes to life but happens too frequently. I get so pissed I want to slam it the floor.
2)Another problem i'm having is I can't install many programs. I'm getting tons of errors. I can't install Kaiser tweak or advanced config. I can't install games.
3) when I'm in a wifi area (coffeeshop/restaurant) I go to activate the wifi card (wireless manager) and it gives me the 4 colored icon moving showing it's working for 4-5 seconds and it's still off. I can't activate the damn wifi card..
4)videos I converted with spb mobile dvd appear to play slow and have speech delays/synching, which they never did.
5) A wierd thing happened when I used "file explorer ex" to go to the storage card directory, all of a sudden I had tons of wierd files all having 3 characters only with numbers/letters with a windows icon and I couldn't erase it because it said it was a system file. something like 10-15 of them. I restarted the system and it went back to being normal.
DAMN TYTNII/TILT/8925! i'm fed up with slowness and problems with the phone. I'm considering the Touch pro2 but from what I see it has the same crap processor and so I'm wondering if they didn't include the video driver for that one (or any other model HTC has, and so I'm consider something besides HTC, maybe the xperia) as well. I want to be able to play full movies, skyfire, and a good keyboard not like the tilt. I want the UI to be very fast and smooth not like the tilt.And when I press the red button to hang up a call, I don't want to wait 2-3 seconds either. BTW, when is WM7 coming out cause this 6.1 aint doing it for me.

That sounds bad.... When you say you reinstalled the ROM do you mean that you reflashed it or that you did a hard reset?
Have you tried a hard reset? (again)
Settings-> system -> clear storage
You could also try the official WM6.1 ROM that can be found on the HTC web site.

but if you want help to see if you can improve on some or all of your complaints, we will need more information, particularly:
A. was it fine before? when did each of the problems start? please go back to your original post and describe which problems existed from the beginning and which ones popped up later
B. describe your configuration. which version of windows mobile are you using? 6.0? 6.1? 6.5? is it an official ROM or a "cooked" one? whats your SPL version? which radio ROM are you using?
C. which software are you using for video playback? granted, the kaiser lacks proper video drivers (as do most of HTC's newer models), it can still be tweaked quite nicely to give very acceptable video playback...i play divx/xvid videos at FULL framerate with no lag on my set up, after appropriate tweaks of course
D. maybe the wifi networks you are trying to connect to are SECURE and/or MAC filtered...have you tried connecting to a network that you are certain is open-for-all?
E. have you tried a hard reset as suggested in the first response in this thread?
F. most of the problems you are mentioning sound like SOFTWARE and/or OS issues...hardware is quite a distant possibility to blame so considering moving to a new device based on your reported observations is uninformed. windows phones are windows phones and they are designed to be flexible and masters-of-everything and therefore require the user to be well informed and aware of what he/she is doing. if you can't keep up and don't desire and/or can't harness the uber-power that the kaiser delivers, move on to the iFart and be done with it
my advice is to provide answers to the above and/or perform a hard reset and/or change your ROM. OR, you COULD just have a lemon on your hands in which case a change of hardware is your only option. but you will only know for sure it is a lemon if you go through the motions mentioned here...

a)I've had the phone since Sept08. After unlocking it using an ebay service I used it as it was. a few weeks after that I did my first hard reset ( I forgot the terminology before) and then a week later found out about the 3 second reset to remove bloatware, so did that. About every 2-3 months it seems to have little problems (not run smoothly, memory full)and I do a hard reset. The last one I did was 2-3 weeks ago. I missed the 3 second opportunity and did a HR again, then did it. On my Mi-SD card I have most of the software I need to get it going. All TCPMP extensions to play flash, windows DLL's , kaiser tweak, memmaid, aflashlight app, skyfire, opera, minimo, fonts, ringtone, HTChome6, a dialer to replace the junk one included,and other stuff, you get the idea. The screen was fine before. never had the tapping problem i'm having now.
b)I can't install KTweak or the andvanced config, which I was easily able to before. I removed opera because it was bothering me with the XML part of the Ktweak, but still not able to..
c) I have WM6 PRO CEOS 5.2.1620(build 18125.0.4.2) just the regular att one I recieved when i bought the phone (ebay)

TCPMP with all the drivers/DLL's. Btw, for the heck of it, all video's of WMV I converted using SPB dvd mobile I played in windows mobile, and it plays it much smoother than the TCPMP.
e)As far as the wifi is concerned, I mean that first I activate wifi through CONN manager, and try to activate the 2nd icon on the right side going down, the "I" with the the 2 "c's" on each side..that's what i'm talking about, it doesn't want to turn yellow. Then after I activate it, I go to the wifi, see the available networks available then connect to one. I don't even get to the 2nd stage since it doesn't want to turn the wifi on..I tried it this second it works fine. I guess it works according to how it feels that day.. Not that I net so much with the phone. WhenI can't activate the wifi card,, the square "E" icon at the top starts searching using GPRS (if I recall) and it shows the "E" with 2 arrows moving to the sides (like the wifi does) and a windows keeps popping up and won't go away!!! it drives me crazy..I press the hang up button but it doesn't stop it, till I can take it no more and pull the battery out..

YOU"RE 100% right!(Iphone..OH,GOD NO!!)I lack some knowledge as to how to work it properly, you're right about that. I don't want a phone that I buy to have to flash it it, and to do this and that, and blah blah blah. I want something that will work right out of the box. Will be quick, not lack drivers(which btw, HTC back stabbed everyone, and for this reason I'm not sure i'll go with HTC again) and be able to do it all. I'm willing to put down $1k for this phone, even $1400, but fo some reason or another no one can make one. Why I don't know. Why can't 1 smart manufacturer, look at all the flaws of the top phones and produce a perfect phone. People would jump all over it. I also feel like giving up with the TILT, only because it doesn't satisfy my needs. i'm not to happy with the TILT. At first I was extremly excited, but now, I want to slam it to the floor. The software lacks many things, and it can only do so much. The market and tech is there for many years, can't they make a perfect pda phone, and why the hell is taking M$ so long to make an OS that has it all? If they can make a great OS like Windows 7, why can't they implament that tech to PPC's? LAZY IMO!
I'm looking at all the phones on GSM arena, and none of them has it all, none. Considered the xperia, but crappy rez and small screen. The new Idou, only good because of the 12MP camera, but nothing else, and don't want symbian OS..fed up with Nokia..nothing normal out there. All HTC's. all the same..can't find something normal..

jumpspl is needed ONLY AND ONLY to CHANGE your HardSPL...it is also needed to put on the HardSPL in the first place. it may not be a very intuitive read and certainly requires some effort on the reader's part but if you read it all carefully, your concepts will become rock solid and all further steps and conclusions will flow logically...the pieces will fall into place.

its a good idea to keep all installables on your micro sd card. BUT, you should install ONLY the stuff you TRULY need. also remember to clear up browser caches and temporary files that are dropped on the device internal memory from time to time. skyfire, opera, minimo...thats THREE browsers in addition to the builtin IE...i just stick to the latest official beta of opera 9.7 in addition to the latest IE built in to my winmo6.5 ROM. my point is, windows mobile (pre 6.x, 6.0, 6.1, and 6.5) is somewhat delicate and sensitive in terms of the specific versions of applications you install. i've had my kaiser (my FIRST winmo device) for just over a year...i still use pretty much the same applications as i did the first couple of months, i've abandoned some in favor of better ones, and nearly all of them are newer versions that i am certain are compatible with the winmo build(s) i am using at any given time. your stock ROM is quite an OLD build and quite a few corrections and improvements have been made to the OS, so much so that the build number is now in the 21xxx range (compared to your 6.0 build of 18125) and still going further (a bunch of new bugs and issues are inevitable as the OS moves forward). my point is, perhaps you have accumulated some newer installables that don't quite play well with your old OS build 18125.

thats odd...once again, kaisertweak and advanced config have both progressed to newer versions...if you have an old installable, try a new installable. if you are already trying the new installable, try the old one from the era that your build belongs to.

i'm not saying you should try att's newer official winmo6.1 ROM but some people have reported great improvements, but your milage may vary. i, on the other hand, SWEAR by "cooked" ROMs and there are some particular cooked ROMs that will impress the $H1T out of you

i never used TCPMP and i quickly moved on to coreplayer, even when i was on winmo6.0. so far, the BEST video performance i have gotten was with the following configuration:
1. Sakajati's HyperDragon IV Rhodium ROM (April 10th, 2009)
2. chainfire's gfxboost v1.1
3. coreplayer 1.3.2 build 6909
4. coreplayer configured to DISABLE QTV mode, and video mode set to DirectDraw @ medium quality
on a side note, the ROM mentioned in item 1 above is STELLAR if you're looking for a good cooked winmo6.1 ROM.

make sure your wifi is set for "Best Performance" as opposed to the default "Best Battery". you might want to look into changing your radio ROM as well, making sure to match the radio version with your winmo MAJOR version. that is, some radios are made ONLY for winmo6.0, others ONLY for winmo6.1 and winmo6.5. same concept applies to the particular HardSPL version you use. finally, quite a few senior members and cooks here claim that wifi is the ONLY radio that is NOT AFFECTED by your radio version but my experience has been different.
also, you need to understand how windows mobile "picks" an available connection and uses it. if your data connection is set up and enabled, it will almost always be picked and forced to connect, even if your wifi is already connected. you'll have to read up some more about the concept but here is what i do. i have my data connection DISABLED all the time. i force windows mobile to always pick "My Work Network" (which is usually the wifi). note that windows will NEVER force the wifi to connect and won't be able to connect the data connection because i have disabled it. this way, i have TOTAL control over how it "dials out". so when i am in a wifi area, i connect my wifi manually and when i am not in a wifi area, i enable my data connection and i let windows dial out onto Edge/GPRS, etc.

errr i think the zoom level is controllable in the camera ONLY in non-3-megapixel mode. that is, if your camera's picture taking mode is set to 3MP, you will NOT get any zoom control. set it to anything lower and you should get zoom control. you must have inadvertantly set the resolution to below 3MP and 3 months ago, either you or the hard reset must have caused it to revert to 3MP, hence your inability to zoom in picture mode.

i said it before and i'll say it again and i don't mean to sound harsh but windows mobile is powerful...and with great power comes great responsibility...the user HAS TO BE AWARE of what he/she is doing and what is going on in the device to be able to tweak it and customize it and to get it to do EXACTLY what is desired.

Constantly Intermittent Connection

I have an AT&T Tilt, and I ran the unlocker on it.
Recently I installed the TPC V11 Chumpstyle rom which is a 6.5 rom. Things seemed fine on it for the first couple days but then I noticed it was constantly disconnecting without notice from the service. Texts would randomly stop going through, and when I would go to make a call, it would end the call after about 10 seconds of unsuccessful dialing. Same with the data.. no browser would work.
I decided to try out different radios and different SPLs, even mirroring peoples setups which I assume were working since they have them in their sig lines.
These are the combinations I have tried:
HardSPL 3.29
USED:
1.70.19.09 - Intermittent. Only gets off 4-5 text messages before disconnect.
1.65.21.18 - No 3G connection
1.71.09.01 - No Service
1.70.18.02 - Intermittent disconnect
1.65.17.54 - Long connection time after startup - refuses to connect
HardSPL 3.56
USED:
1.64.08.21 - 4 minute connection time on startup, camera doesn't work
1.71.09.01 - No Service
1.70.19.09 - Intermittent disconnect
1.70.18.02 - No Service

What surprises and annoys me most is right now I have the stock rom/radio
Rom: 3.57.502.2
Radio: 1.65.21.18
and it does the same exact thing. It is very intermittent, works for 5 minutes after startup, and then nothing.
Nothing on the forum I have been able to search has helped me with this issue, and any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

one more thing comes to mind that might be worth a shot...
try to disable the 3G/HSDPA mode altogether and configure the device for plain GSM mode only. see how that fairs with the stock configuration or any of the "recommended" combinations of SPL and radio.

Just lovely. I really would like a way to fix it. I don't plan on paying 125.00 for the insurance costs to get a new one, and really don't want to spend 300.00 on a TP2.

After looking at some of the newer thread posts, I think I may have a hardware issue here. Anyone able to tell offhand whether it isn't or if it could be, and/or if it is possible to fix?

I swapped out my motherboard with a friends who had given me thiers last year due to a broke screen. I did a Sprite back up and everything has been good for 24 hours.

2 weeks ago I was home and just lost service while the rest of my family and i usually had serivice. I would get service occasionally but only for 30 seconds or so and maybe like once every 15 minutes.
So I went back to school and for 2 straight weeks I had absolutely no problems.. and now I'm home again and I have the same problem..
Also last night I started using an old RAZR and it worked fine untill this afternoon seems to be acting the same, but when I went to ATT last time I was given a new SIM card...
Really weird.

I went through the SIM card swap as well. From what rob said it sounds like a hardware issue. Bad batch of AT&T Tilts all going bad around the same time?

I used advanced config to shut off data connections and then set my band to GSM and mine works fine now..

I just did the same using Advanced Config. I'll see what happens. I have no "Band" setting tab.

Did that help mini... after i did that mine "kinda" worked but then when i switched the band it worked perfect. I think you might have do so something in advanced to get the band tab to appear in "Connections." Ill try to figure out what I did

Try to see if you have the "Band" tab under "Phone", sorry it's not under connections, its right after network. I I switched network type from auto to GSM. If the page isnt there in advanced config under phones there is an option to "Show Band Page"

Also same intermittant issue w HSDPA
All,
My rom (Athene) has a setting under connections to disable HSDPA. I've found the phone works pretty well with HSDPA disconnected. I've also tried different radios and still having the same problem.
My assumption is that the TILT (8925) was never really designed for HSDPA or that the spec has changed since AT*T has started implementing it.
When I have HSDPA turned on, it works for about 2-5 mins then I cannot use Medianet or make/receive calls.
However, I know that HSDPA is working sometimes, because I did a speed test and found that I got approx 450kbps w/ HSDPA turned on. With EDGE, I only get 140-150kbps.
I say we all petition AT&T (or whoever your provider is) as well as HTC and require that they provide us with new versions of the TILT that actually support HSDPA properly. Obviously, if that many of us have the same problem and we all have different rom's and radios, it's got to be a network or hardware issue.
I plan to call / write ATT & HTC today. I'll let you know my findings.

It's definitely got to be HTC/AT&T's fault. This is no coincidence. This is bs.

Well, I just got off the phone with Asurion and I have some good news.
As the Kaiser is no longer manufactured, and the HTC Fuze replacement they offered me does not fit my needs, they are replacing my Kaiser with a brand new Rhodium with a 12 month warranty. Farewell, Kaiser forum!
