In Windows Media Player I am having trouble recently - I have on my storage card a number of albums - these are all stored under the ATRISTs name:
\SimonGarfunkel
\DireStraits
\U2
When I want to play something by Artist and choose U2 it displays the two albums I have there - but only three songs - They USED to all be there under the correct album. But - now - they are under UNKNOWN.
It seems that if I upload them again they are again under the correct album - but they migrate to UNKNOWN artist with a number of other songs from other ablums.
Has anyone else seen this behavior? Do you know what causes it and what I can do to prevent it?
I am pretty sure that this has nothing to do with the ROM that I have loaded - (see signature) so rather than make it look like this is a bug in the ROM, I have posted this question here.
Thanks,
Bill
Do your files have the correct ID3 tags? The player might relocate them according to it.

Yes - all tags when looking at them on my COMPUTER seem to be correct.
I also made an incorrect statement - if I delete the files on my phone, and RESEND them they are STILL incorrect after a re-import on my cell phone.
For some reason while they came over correctly once - I listened to them so I KNOW they were there and correctly categorized, now they will not correctly be recognized by ARTIST or ALBUM either.
They are under unknown for both.
Strange -
Bill
Do you use itunes? If so go into your library where the songs you are trying to import are present, you should see the artist name written in the artist column, if not the ID3 tags have not been written correctly...
Here is a picture to show what I mean...

To create an ID3 tag for a song just right click the song in iTunes, select the first option [Get Info] then the second tab up the top [Info] and you should be able to edit the ID3 information...
maybe there's a simpler way to do this not in iTunes but this is how I've always done it.
WMPInfo file
I had this problem when i changed which PC i did my media sync with.
Try deleting the 'WMPInfo.html' file on the storage card and set-up your sync from Windows Media Player on the PC again. It worked for me.

First let me thank you and Dextrous for trying to help me - it is very much appreciated.
I do not use I tures - I simply copy the files over with Active Sync Active and then tell the cell phone to "update the library".
The artist for the ID3 tag is there (Dextrous).
I cannot find the WMPINFO.HTML file you refer to. Can you tell me where I might look for that file?
Thanks
Bill
WMPInfo
My apologies. It is on your storage card 9if that is where you stored your music. and it's an 'xml' file, not 'html'. It stores the sync data for your media.
grrrr....
OK - There is no such file on my
\Storage Card\My Music\
Folder and each artist is in their own folder under that directory and here is no such file in THOSE directories...
I did NOT use active sync to sync these - I simply copy and paste with Active Sync active and that puts the files on my storage card and then I update the library and I can play them.
I have S2P on the phone as well - but when I go to the My Music directory it simply displays ALL the songes there it is almost impossible to view all 1200 songs that I have on my phone as you have to scroll through each folder and see all the songes ...
Any ideas?
Bill
I think that may where the problem lies. If you use windows media player to sync, it will copy all of the songs to the card for you. The folders will be copied based on artist, then album and it will create the WMPInfo file to the route directory which mobile media player will use to list tag data properly. I know this is not what you are using to sync media, but I would recommend it as it works perfectly for every device I use. It can also convert the files to different bit rates (if you want) to save on space. Not to mention the autosync feature and album art which.

Excellent advice!
Thank you -
What I was doing worked up until I had over 1000 files on the system - obviously then it ran out of "something" and fell over.
Your method has now put all the albums back where they belong and I sure appreciate your help.

Nice But still not compare to TCPMP because it has Avi Divx Support
I agree that TCPMP player is so much better, but it is nice to have these codecs.
What kind of WM6 theme is that?
It's darker then the official Windows Mobile blue theme, installed on my HTC Touch.
Could you please upload it?

It appeared to be japanese? Maybe its not compatible? Im in agreeance with the others though! TCPMP is much better, It's got PLENTY of CODEC's! TCPMP FTW!
I installed this on a Touch HD, with coreplayer 1.3. It installed but WMP couldn't open anything new so i tried with Core and now CorePlayer wouldn't even open, so I uninstalled Q8. And CorePlayer Still would no longer open. soft reset..still dead Coreplayer. so i uninstalled Core.. reset and reinstalled Core... And it still no longer works. DEAD. worked great before i'll see what their support says but thought I'd give all a heads up.
Update: Haven't heard from Core Support yet so thought I'd install TCPMP in the mean time... It crashes now. installs wont run... so some thing is hosed up I searched found referenced: (http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-357053.html) checked and none of the files listed to manually delete exist.
can Anyone help?

I have been searching for hours to find a player that will launch from outlook and play an .au file.
While other players would play .au files I could not get then to work from Outlook.
Don`t use the "WMP Q8 All Codec.cab"!!!
Since i have installed the cab, my handy plays nothing more and i think i have to restore it completly. It makes me angry.

I read about that this codecs only work in devices with Intel Xcale processor, like HTC Athena (x7500), , Dell Axim x50/x51 series, HP iPAQ’s...
works perfectly with Dell Axim x51v.

COREPLAYER "my media player of choice"
I am deleting this Coreplayer post as it has since developed problems with the rom I am using. Leos version 9. I have gone back to TCPMP along with having my Kaiser changed. Sorry about that but at the time I genuinly thought the sun shined out of Coreplayers interface.
I have Coreplayer. What version do you have because mine doesn't play Flash. I still have to use TCPMP. Luckily, I got my Skyfire invite so I can watch online videos. I will agree that Coreplayer is lightyears ahead of TCPMP. Does anyone know if you can upgrade to newer version or do you have to buy it again?

Best in Class audio and video codecs like CoreAVC our High Definition H.264 video decoder
CoreTheque media library allows for easy management of your playlists and bookmarks
It for everything inclding mp3 playback . It plays my YouTube choices straight out of the box from linking automatically to links in Pocket Microsoft explorer. It also plays flv flash movies such as animations (I use it for University projex) Not alot it doesn't do really. Tons of formats to choose should you want to use it for default player on your ppc.
The best thing of all is the volume which by using the software graphic and pre-amp is VERY loud if you need it so. It us also controllable via a bluetooth headset. I use a motorolla s9 and they rock. Track selecting from the buttons on your ear is as easy as it gets.
Coreplayer also has a ton of included options and tweaks to make it perfect to your own spec.Take a look at there website see what you think. Incidently if you didnt already know it is crafted from the same hands that built TCPMP player. Its just created better for commercial puposes.
And it has been built with included support for the Kaiser/Tilt HTC phones for increased quality playback.
Oh and the GUI looks great the buttons are nice looking and everything is there such as playback time left volume slider, time select slider.

rename your album cover jpg file to album or folder that should do it
I noticed as well that not all Embedded artwork worked for me, but when I seperated by music into folders by Album and added a jpg of the album cover then the album covers were displayed. As the previous post mentioned you have to name the jpg either album or folder. I use "folder" for all my album covers.

sorry for this noob question, but do you do that on your pc, and then transfer? or could I do it on WM? I just did what you've said on my storage device inserted to my WM (renamed the jpg pic to the folder name), but I still don't get the album cover pic...
I get all of my album covers from this site
http://albumart.org/index.php?srchkey=Moby&itempage=4&newsearch=1&searchindex=Music
and then change the name of the jpg to "folder"
I then transfer the album cover with the new name to my device using either active sinc or WIFI to the appropriate folder to which this album cover belongs.
All of my songs are separated in folders according to albums on my SD card under a general folder called I called "Music".
This technique works with every music player I have on my HTC Touch - S2P, WMP,TCPMP and Mort Player.
You can transfer the album cover picture to your phone and rename it to "folder" on your phone once it is in the appropriate file though. It should not make a difference as I have done it both ways successfully. Remember not to call the picture "folder.jpg" just "folder" as it is already a jpg and will be recognized as such. Make sure that the pictures are jpg's though otherwise it will not work
I don't know if use Windows Media Player on your computer. I go in Windows Media Player on my computer, click the sync tab which shows my device and storage card. I transfer the songs I want to add to sd card and sync. If I have the album art for the song on my computer WMP puts it on my SD card. I have 570 songs on my phone and all the album art shows up.

It worked for both. I d/l plenty of singles. Some have the art imbedded while the rest, I simply load the album art into Media Player using the edit option. Once it's in there the computer transfers it over. From my experience, it is a good idea to try to limit the amount of songs you transfer at once. When I first did, I had 300 songs on the sync list. Some of the songs didn't have art and they weren't in any folders. I haven't had a problem if sync an album(or even most of an album). I limit single songs to about 10(Ones that aren't attached to an album) per sync. It's very fast. I have over 500 songs on my phone now, all by using media player.

Great. Thanks a lot for this. Been looking for ages to see how to allocate folders etc.
I prefer a folder even for each single since embedded art doesn't always work and it's flawless if you add the image into each folder

theres a million and 1 diffrent ways to do it, the easiest way ive found and recommened to others and they've all given great feedback with is to..

find what ever covers are needed, using google, save to my desktop and just drag and drop..its really that easy

I am happy to announce the 0.9.8.6 release of Plex which adds support for Honeycomb. This release has been worked and reworked by Darrin and the rest of the beta crew for months in an attempt to get everything working well on Honeycomb. Movies, TV and Music all work along with some of the Plugins. The layout has been optimized for our larger screen and looks great in my opinion.
Before anyone ask, NO the Netflix is not working on Android at this time.
Video by default will transcode to the Xoom, but if you want to try out direct stream and direct play you can enable it in Advanced Settings. Because of the limitations of the Tegra2 with High Profile we decided that transcoding should be the default.
You can find the new update in the market on your Xoom or here on the web.
If you need the server click the link forwindows or OSx
If you do get any crashes please send the event in along with info on any custom kernel you're running.
If you have any questions feel free to ask or PM me.
Have a look at Darrins blog post for more info.

How to help us trouble shoot your problems.
If you are having playback issues and we ask you for a logcat please do the following.
Download alogcat
Open alogcat and clear the log.
Open Plex and try to play the movie, song or plugin.
Exit plex.
Open alogcat and save whats in there to a file.
If we ask for a PMS.log or Plex Media Server.log file please do the following.
First close down the PMS in your system tray. Then open it back up again, this clears out the log file. Try to stream a video. If it fails then do the following.
Windows-
Right click PMS icon in your system tray
Choose open plug-in folder
Go up one folder level in explorer
Choose the logs folder
Grab a copy of the Plex Media Server.log file.
OSx-
~/Library/Logs/Plex Media Server.log
Now lets go to pastebin.com and paste the contents of either file into the field. Send only the link.
Very nice! I use Plex on my iPhone and iPad everyday and now when I also got a Xoom, I wanted to be able to use Plex on this device.
I was just out snooping through the site for my wife's iPad and saw the news. This is awesome for the Plex team!
There is a good link here: http://darrin.plexapp.com/2011/04/27/plex-for-android-now-supports-honeycomb-xoom-and-other-tablets/
This thing looks awesome on my Xoom and it was the only thing making me miss my iPad!

I started with Plex on a HTPC setup and MacMini. Since then my library is now portable (3g/remote wifi) as well as usable in my house when my wife is watching Glee
Its also solid at playing HD content to your Xoom and saves the pain of having to run all your movies through Handbrake before you play them.
ive got a bluray player with external hd that plays mkv so idk if i would need to stream to my xoom over wifi
i am trying to find a reason to play with this but cant

The entire point of this on Android is for when your NOT at your home. It does pretty well over 3g, but it really shines on remote wifi.
Now Plex at home along with XBMC or to a lesser degree Boxee all SMOKE your blueray with regard to media. If you have never played with any of these program and actually indexed a library out of your mkv's then you need to give it a try. Seriously you will not want to go back to simple list view of your movies after you play with one of these programs.
Bottom line though, if you have no want to have access to all your media when away from home then this app may no be fore you.
Streaming a bluray over 3g would be awful no?

Ummm I think you misunderstood. I was talking about streaming your MKV files, I have over 300 720p MKVs that stream just fine. The transcode engine should work with 1080p's but I never really tried.
If the majority of your movies are ON BluRay and you dont want to rip them, then again, this program might not be for you.

As long as the file is not DRM protected it should work.
just downloaded it and gave it a whirl. Seems pretty sweet, I have a 1080p rip that wasnt too bad over my tethered 3g. But again, anything in my "library" would easily be able to be stored/played on my Xoom, but I guess if I forgot something this would be nice
The music portion is awesome. Is it possible to make the player goto landscape?
Can I remove 1 individual mp3/movie from the folder I added without deleting it from my hard drive?
nothing plays on my asus transformer, when i try to play a movie or even run a plug in , it goes back to the main screen

You I would say have a unique library if you have a bunch of HD movies encoded in low profile. Thats the single biggest downfall of the Tegra2 chip, most of us need to re-encode the files we have for playback.
If all of your movies CAN be played back on your Xoom without framedrops, then go take a look in Advanced settings and turn on Direct Stream and Direct Play. Direct Play will stream the file directly with zero transcoding as long as bandwidth allows.
I am closing in on 5 TB of media on my end and there is no way that any portable in the near future will be able to house it. Thats where this App comes into play for me.
You should be able to remove it from the library which is nothing more then a database. The next time it scans it will be added again. There maybe a way to hide it, but I have never looked into that. Google is your friend. I would just remove it from the library and then move the file to another folder.

Thanks for the heads up, it did just drop and no testing has been done on it. Its odd though as the hardware should be the same.
Are you getting any errors in the android status area or does it just drop back to menu?
Do you know how to get a logcat?
Download alogcat open it, clear the log, open Plex and try to play the movie and plugin, exit plex, open alogcat and save whats in there to a file.
PM me the logcat file and Ill pass it over to Darrin.
I'm thinking when I finally know the answer this will be dumb question but... Just messing around with Google music and I want to copy music from my PC to the Captivate. Their web help simply says just copy... so easy. My question is where do I put it so it finds it. This is music that I loaded to my PC from CD's.
I know this is not captivate specific but I'll bet there are people here that know.
If this question is inappropriate for this forum I'll delete it or the mods can close it.
it scans the sdcard for media, like the gallery, does not matter where you put it.
Or more technically those apps are updated by the media scanner in Android.
Create a media folder. Within that directory, create a music folder.

you see the unknown artists, that is a sound file i have someplace else on my sdcard that it loaded from the media scanner.
I thank you...
Thanks a lot. I'd put the file in the Data/Download directory that also had a .NoMedia file in it. Wasn't sure if that would stop good things but clearly it did. I thought that media scanner would pick it up but that did stop it.
Created a Music folder and viola. No album art of course... grrrr but I think there is an app for that as they say. One of the only pet peeves I have about android is this process... getting the album art that is already on my PC onto my phone.
This is much better though than having to sync through playlists though.
Once again thanks and another learning opportunity for me.
edit:
Interesting... Used CoverArt Downloader to download some covers. It found them just fine. The stock music player and doubletwist show the art just fine but Google music does not.

Google music should be showing album artwork. I don't know why it's not doing it
