Some questions about the Keiser (performance and other) - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III General

Hey all,
First off I want to say that I've been using htc products since the original orange SPV and whenever I have needed anything this site has always been here for me. Fantastic work, please don't stop - ever. You're a true credit to the Windows Mobile community.
If it's not too much trouble I have some questions about the Keiser that I and i'm sure one of you will know exactly what the problem is.
Choppy music
Recently i've been finding that when playing music to a bluetooth (sony dr-bt22) or cabled headset (using converter) the music will occasionally jump quite a lot. Now it doesn't do this all the time, but I would have thought that when this happens it'd be down to some sort of bottleneck with resources. I've looked at the great taskmgr tool and can't see anything major. There's about 50% of the ram and processing power free and for just playing music I wouldn't have thought this would have drained much. So my thought was maybe it's to do with storage bandwidth, but I'm unable to find out. Can anyone recommend me a tool or a fix for this issue? Is it common?
Wifi
I barely use wifi cause it seems to get insanely hot and use alot of battery. It seems a bit of a waste to me to have a great feature like wifi disable on a device like this. I only have the o2 gprs bolt on and it doesn't connect at great speeds. I'd love to be able to automatically hop onto trusted wifi networks as I roam about particularly as openzone is everywhere these days.
Is the insane heat it's generating a sign that this should not be sat in my pocket all day or is it perfectly safe? I'm guessing this is why it's sapping all the power with all the energy wasted on heat but can't this be avoided? I'm not much of an expert on how wifi works or the safety of having it so close to you all the time.
GPRS performance
I was pretty fed up of the bills I was getting on contract with this phone so I'm now using the o2 png and using the o2 £7 internet bolton. However, I REALLY hate internet explorer! It is extremely fiddly on the move and I can't drag pages around with my finger or so it seems. Can anyone recommend me a really smart browser that is finger orientated? I also seem to be getting insanely poor performance with GPRS/3G, pages are taking a insane amount of time to load sometimes so i'm figuring i'm mostly on GPRS. How is 3g coverage these days and what speed should I be expecting? Or is this all down to the strength of the battery on the phone?
Finger Based Alternatives
I loved some of the ideas in PointUI and would love any recommendations on finger apps - especially for reading mail and controlling windows media player and most of all that annoying stock Contacts window, it can be a pain dragging a pen out or switching to the keyboard just to make a simple call.
Bluetooth Disconnection
Whilst packed into a train on my way to work one day my bluetooth headset power ran out and disconnected from my phone. I happened to be playing music and 100% volume and you can imagine what happened next. Is there a way for Windows Media Player to pause on bluetooth disconnection? It's extremely embarassing!
Thanks in advance for those that reply. I really love this phone and would love to get the most out of it.
Cheers
Mike

Lots of questions -
You do not state what ROM you are on/using - but I had many of the issues with BT and WIFI and music that you state you are having. I upgraded to the ROM in my signature and the BT and WIFI problems went away.
I use Opera now and like it better - don't set your expectations on internet on a 2 by 3 inch screen too high. When your finger takes up 7 percent of the ENTIRE screen it is going to be difficult to point accurately easily. The pointer however works a treat.
Re: BT disconnection - I was at the BYM and listening to music and it happened to me - you apologize and stop the music ASAP. Now - in church while the minister is speaking is a totally 'nother story...
Bill

Hi Whk,
I tried out duttys wm61 rom which I enjoyed the most but seemed to have the largest performance issues on. Before that it was the stock o2 xda build.
Thanks for the suggestion with opera, i'll give it a go.
Cheers!

8125: dropped calls on 2.x ROMs: let's figure it out

I've seen this issue come up several times lately. Unfortunately I don't know the cause or have a solution, but I do want to see if we can figure it out together.
I tend to have very good luck with calls and signal holding on the 2.X ROMs. I've dropped a couple calls over the last few months, but that's generally signal related.
One thing I suspect, but have yet to confirm, is that either ActiveSync or other network app is trying to create a data connection and the phone is obliging, knocking down the voice call as a result. It *shouldn't* behave that way, so I'm just guessing based on a few quick observations, but it might be something to look into. I don't know how much control the OS can give to apps when it comes to forcing a data connection at the expense of voice (should probably be none), but maybe there's some badly behaved apps out there.
I'm just throwing ideas out so we can work towards a solution.
EDIT:
I should probably clarify that I'm talking about a problem of dropped calls happening at seemingly regular intervals, not dropped calls due to poor signal strength.
I have to completly agree...my favorite rom was on of the first summy rommy's but as always i kept going to the newer ones as i have no self control. I was getting a ton of dropped calls I thought i was hiitting the end button with my cheek it was so bad. I have been running the new dopod 2.21.13.1 WWE and it has been flawless, it get about 28 mg of program after clean install. I have had just about every damn rom on my phone and this works well. I don't do the extended rom, i just use a autorun i made with all my apps i normally use, maybe give it a try, it could also be dumb luck, but i have yet to have a single dropped call, and i do sales in Las Vegas to the hotels and I get reception in elevators and in basements I never used to. You are the expert, let me know. ****Warning this post is 100% personal experiince, and absolutly no expertise except experience screwing up my device and late nights running stupid benchmarks for hours to see if I can get it a wee bit faster. Stafford out
well i'll say this, everytime it happened, it lokked like it was going into flight mode each time, then going out and back to normal a few seconds or so later. i flashed with the cooked a2dp rom, and left everything stock, it hasn't happened since.
I haven't seen it at all on the stock Qtek AKU2 rom. It seems odd that a re-flashing process seems to correct this since the base rom is the same. You'd think customizations may be the underlying cause but then everybody should be experiencing the issue.
i was having the same issue too, so i was thinking maybe it was the radio rom. i downgraded the radio rom to 1.13 and i've been testing it out so far. The last two days i've been okay with no dropped calls though i have not made any very long calls yet to fully test it out. i will keep u guys posted.
Well Summiter, for what its worth, I have an 8125 and I'm running that Cingular_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU2_WWE.exe ROM you released. Radio version 2.07.10.
My results have been absolutely phenomenal. Not only is the device rock solid at clock speeds in excess of 270 MHz, but the battery lasts incredibly long and I have had zero dropped calls in over 2 weeks of use within a 50 mile radius.
Even though this ROM doesn't have your A2DP cab I quite frankly don't care, I'm going to have to think long and hard before I use any other ROM version, official or not.
Edit: I should also note that I'm using Direct Push which means I'm on a constant EDGE/GPRS connection. Even though I've been running this for around a week now, it has had no noticeable effects on my ability to receive or make phone calls. My sole issue with Direct Push was a lockup that would occur when I enabled WiFi, but changing the WiFi registry key "ResetOnResume" to 0 has fixed this.
just an update. i downgraded to 1.13 radio rom and direct push and all calls are fine now. I think i will leave it with this radio since everything is working great now.
Happened during Active Sync
Saw it with my own eyes! On the phone with our PM through BT800 this afternoon and was looking at the screen when Active Sync kicked in and the call immediately droped. (But I did get an email for a good price on Viagara!)
Running: MSVC, SPB Pocket Plus & push email from Exchange
For those folks that changed to a 1.X radio version, I'd like to know if your issue has been completely resolved, or if it's only improved to some degree.
I think the AS activity when a call drops may be because it opens a data connection the millisecond the radio has closed voice (when dropped for other reasons). In other words, the appearance of AS or other data activity actually forcing the voice call to drop is misleading.
If I experienced dropped calls on any significant basis I'd test more of this myself...but (un)fortunately I don't drop calls more than once a week, if that. So..I have to depend on you poor saps who can't hold a voice call to attempt to resolve. >: )
i thought it had resolved completely but i had my first dropped call last night with the same problem looking down and seeing that it dropped the call...tried to establish gprs(edge) and then went in and out of flight mode. the 1.3 seemed to have fixed it a little but not completely. with the new radio i was dropping calls within 4 mins of a call. with the new radio rom i have the only one dropped call 45 min into my call. I probably would have dropped 3 or 4 times before. I don't know what else to do to fix it.
What ROM version and radio version are the people with this problem running exactly? I think that's a good start maybe to get a scope for the issue.
I'm using "Cingular_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU2_WWE_CF2_A2DP-fixed.exe" and have experienced many dropped calls immediately followed by no signal (searching for signal) for about a minute after dropping the call.
ROM Version
I'm using the Cingular_RUU_WIZARD_217_AKU2_WWE_CF2_A2DP.exe ROM
I'll try some tests tonight to duplicate what happened yesterday.
Another bit of information that could be helpful is whether or not you are using handsfree when your calls are dropped. This is especially important if you are using the A2DP hack or a ROM integrated with A2DP.
Clueless
Don’t know what the h*** happened yesterday. (maybe I’m seeing things….or the “flight-mode” hiccupped?)
Called to & from the phone with & w/o hands free while sending myself emails. No failures…why?? Because GPRS is suspended during phone calls. I’m sure there is a reg hack to enable GPRS during a call.

I should note that this has occurred while on a bluetooth headset (not stereo) and also when not on the headset.
I'm using Cingular 2.26 Aku2.3 w/a2dp FULLY LOADED *BETA* **UPDATED**
I get dropped calls using a bt headset, a wired headset or no hands-free at all.
Appears to go into flight mode and back out when it occurs. I have noticed that activsync runs all on its own (i haven't synched with a pc even once)
I've had the issue on every rom i've tried recently although i don't remember what they were.
I have a question....my handset not only drops the call it soft resets about 5 mins into the call. POOF! IT is CRAZY!
Anyone having that issue?
On edit for more detail and clarity:
It even happened after I did the HTC GPRS workaround. It didn't stop until I disabled data and activesync through the comm manager
I am not having that issue now. I'm on a new rom.
My stock 8125 will do a reset, but it isn't with every call. I think I've only seen this when using hands free. I'm here looking for an updated rom to get rid of this "feature" of dropped calls and resets. Its driving me up the wall.
And yes for the basic dropped call, mine seems to go into flight mode when this happens, and yes, I see ActiveSync then running on my phone when I wasn't connected to a PC at all that day. The dropped calls happen whether I'm hands free (non stereo BT headset), or just using the phone handset itself.
This is my main frustration with this phone right now. Microsoft Voice Command (new 1.6 with BT support) fixed my other complaint in making the phone easier to use as a phone.

I have noticed that ActiveStink is in my tasks as a running program when I'm not connected to my PC. I think though it is because I have an exchange server. I wonder if connecting to the exchange server is what is causing the call drops?

Band switcher

I am looking for a quick and easy way to switch from 3G to Edge (Yes I have a Tilt on AT&T) from the today screen so that I can conserve battery life most of the time but get to 3G quickly.
I thought that phoneAlarm could do it by profile but it doesn't.
Freeware would be great since I am not looking for anything profile, time or location based but at the point I am open to whatever.

Thank you sir.. I have been on the board for too long trying to figure out some flashing things and got lazy.
I have working this issue from the phoneAlarm end as well since it seems to have decided to stop working on me for some reason

Have a great weekend!
I did some more testing and the plot thickens (or at least becomes more complicated) I read here that the Tilt changes bands differently than other WM6 phones (although I have not yet figured out how) so I think that may be part of the problem.
I flashed _Alex_ ' s ultra clean ROM and the only thing I installed was phoneAlarm. The phone was connected to MEdia Net in 3G. When I switched to a profile that did not have 3G (selected as GSM in the options) the connection disconnected and reconnected, but it remained 3G.
The same was true in reverse if I selected a GSM profile and reset it would start is EDGE. If I changed it to 3G profile it would disconnect, reconnect and stay EDGE.
I started checking the comm manager (I am using a 10 button comm manager) and the 3G selector would change with the profile although the band switch would not occur.
What is funny is that if I used the 3G selector on the comm manager the band switched with no problem, following the same behavior patter of disconnecting and reconnecting.
I don't know enough to really dig in any further but I will keep googling how the Tilt changes bands and hopefully one of the more technically adept folks will have something figured out or can give me an assist.

3G and edge use the exact transmitted power! (Always on connection is the main problem!) An Ipod uses Edge which is slow. But what the hey, you have a question and it will be answered here...

That is interesting, because I get significant improvements in battery life if I spend the day on EDGE vs 3G. In fact, my battery rarely lasts more than 3/4 of a day with light phone usage if I am on 3G! This experience would see to be pretty common and I have even seen something that says 3G uses up to 4 times as much power as EDGE. This was supposedly the reason why Apple made the iPhone EDGE not 3G.
I am not bashing you and there may some electrical engineering reason why they use the same transmitted power but real life this translates into something different.

That does it!!! I'm finished...
One of the 10 key Comm Managers works. I don't recall what thread I got it in but it works fine for me.
HTC changed the old way to change the band in tilt. Now It isnt enought to change a registry key and reset the radio device. Now are needed dark and undocumented api calls to htc libraries. Bandswitch and commmgrpro(bandswitch + profiles) do it correctly.

Thanks - I will pass this along to Bruce, who is the phonealarm creator, and is trying to fix this in his next release. Another reason I love the product!!!
Shameless plug for them but it really is an awesome product and the support is great! Worth every freakin' penny!

Uh, you wanna cite your source for that one?
I think HTC have been changing things again as my new Touch Dual, with latest bandswitch does not swap, it will allow the change and it even shows it in the system settings, but remains on 3G

If Apple could have made it 3G they would have. Steve Jobs was quoted in an interview that the reason the iPhone was not released with 3G originally was that the hardware to make it 3G was not out long enough to be tested thoroughly at the time the phone was being built and tested, not the time it was released. Once the decision was made to go Edge, Apple couldn't release a much better phone within a quarter or two so the incentive to get it out sooner went away. I have it on good authority (rumors in the media also confirm this) that the 3G iPhone will be released Q2/Q3 in 2008. Also, given the popularity of the iPhone and Cingular's small but growing 3G network at the time of release, Cingular was concerned that not everyone that bought an iPhone would have been in 3G areas and would have complained about performance. This is why Cingular has seemingly accelerated the roll-out of 3G-ready areas faster over the last few quarters. This comes from a few friends at Cingular.
If a new 3G iPhone will have battery life as long as the current Edge iPhone (removable battery would be the bomb to carry an extra one or extra capacity, it will be a very compelling unit, despite the inability to add 3rd party apps. And to bring this full circle to the thread, if a 3G iPhone allows 3G to be turned on/off, look out Windows mobile....oh, and removable storage capacity, too, and GPS..., and a good IM program...
Try these Comm Managers. They both work perfectly fine on my tilt.
None of these work on the Dual as it moans about permissions when installing.

Go to Settings>System> Memory>Running Programs and Stop the Comm Manager application. Then install the Comm Manager.
That should do the trick.

I am currently using the dutty black 3G and that works perfectly. What I have done is link comm manager to a button so I can access it quickly and switch as needed. Changing comm managers does not address the phoneAlarm issue since phoneAlarm changes reg keys (according to Bruce) and with the Tilt (and maybe the Kaiser) it takes "api calls" or something else I don't fully understand.
If there is anyone who knows how this works and would be willing to share with Bruce over at pocketMax so he can build this into a update release that would be awesome!

Stopping everything and install worked thanks.

Is MobiTV REALLY supposed to be this slow???

i know that the Kaiser lacks video performance...but...being that MobiTV comes preinstalled with the Tilt, i would have assumed it performs better than 1 frame every 3 seconds... I never did try MobiTV when i first got my tilt with the AT&T rom, this is my first time using it. I'm using my active sync connection (which i thought was the fastest) and the picture (ITS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE A PICTURE) refreshes every 3 seconds while the audio plays.
Also the quality is horrible...

Works fine for me, the talking heads talk and move as expected. Sometimes it lags, but most of the time it doesn't.
The only time I've seen it go painfully slow is when I've been on AT&T's Edge network (which is atrociously slow, even though it's max capabilities can be faster, must be all those iPhones ) or when HSDPA is giving me less than 700k/s from DSL Reports.
Hope this helps!
Moving this to Kaiser software, as this isn't ROM related.

Signal Strength

I hope somebody can help me with this. I have a T-Mobile Wing and I can't get a signal in my office. I have no office phone to use either, so its really annoying because I miss some important calls. I'm not going to be able to opt out of my contract either. So I was wondering if anybody knows of any tweaks that can boost your signal strength. I'm willing to try anything and I'm only a slight noob (I recently just flashed my rom, first time I tried I bricked my phone but I got it back up and the second time i worked like a charm). So if anybody knows of any hacks or anything like that, that could work I will thank you forever.
P.S. No those little stickers on the phone don't work.
What type of office building is it? Take a good look at the construction of it and a T-Mobile coverage map. If that building used a lot of concrete & rebar + steel in its construction then that will dampen your signal strength. It also depends on your location within the building. If a huge line of power cable is run near where you are that will cause a ton of interference screwing your signal over as well (depending on if they insulated that run).
Other things can cause interferance but primarily those are it. If T-Mobile doesnt have superb coverage in that area that ontop of the building can be brutal.
I dont know of any software tweaks that will help your signal itself, and most of those stupid gadget addon's are gimmicks anyway. If your building has it tap into the wifi and try some VOIP action.
Lastly, try the T-Mobile wing forum, since they use your phone they might have more options and things you can try. This is the s730 wings forum
Try this one, on ebay not so expensive and suitable for very small office (80 m2)

[Q] Main GalaxyS bugs or bad features.

Hi! I hope to write in the right area, but if not I ask someone to move my post in the right one.
Now I have a HTC Diamond device, but I've to change it for a GalaxyS or an iPhone4.
I would like to buy a GalaxyS device, but I read many posts about bugs, lags, gps problems, so I wonder if it is a great choice this GalaxyS.
I like android and all the development opportunities around it (thanks to XDA), but it seems to be not so stable yet...
I flashed many ROMS on my Diamond in the past, so it's not a problem to do the same for my GalaxyS, but problems are fixed? The GPS works fine? Maybe not...
Maybe with Froyo 2.2?
iPhone4 is not so open as an Android device, but it's a very stable device!
What do you think about?
coming from a winmo background you're gonna love the galaxy s! its miles ahead in terms of refinements, polish and brilliant integration. The GPS problems are nothing so critical...its more of a sw fix im guessing. I live in India, and i have ZERO problems on my GPS....i feel the bug is something country/carrier specific.
there are many things to love and obsess with the galaxy s....go get yourself one, you sure wont regret it
While I'd love to echo what dreamtheater39 has said, I can't. It's a brilliant phone, but after having mine for just under a month, it's starting to lag like crazy, and in the last two days I've had a ton of dropped calls and the phone has switched itself off/crashed three times in the last few hours resulting in data loss because the power button doesn't respond (forcing me to hard-reset the phone).
All I can say is that, if you do get one, have an open mind. And make sure you don't get locked into a lengthy contract in case things do go awry.
same here GPS working great since day 1

Maybe I got a lemon
Maybe I got a lemon but I can not stand the i9000. I have 4 bugs that drive me crazy.
1. Market Place hangs at starting download. I have to do a factory reset to download an update an app.
2. GPS just stops working or it puts you on a different street when you are using navigation. The worst part is then it has to recalculate the directions twice, once for the wrong location and then again for the correct location, which is a real pain in the pocketbook when you are rooming.
3. Receives invalided cert from a hotspot connects the 1st time then never again. So I cannot use my hotspot at work, my old iphone connects no problem.
4. Does not always switch between wifi and mobile network. Have to go to airplane mode and back to get 3G network. (I tried changing the wifi sleep settings)
Mmmm...so maybe it's a good device, but I understand that who had an iPhone before it seems to be a step backward...is it?
